Yknow, I have a LOT to say on subnautica below zero, but ive been replaying it and I think ive been too critical on it, especially on the story and writing. Like yeah, a good bit of my critique is just... really missing what it used to be in early access But now I realize rather than it being a bad story or bad writing in general... It's just... a story that isn't very welcoming for well... many subnautica players! Not heavy spoilers on below zero but... just some thoughts on it. Not necessarily a review, I could write a far more in depth review on how the game comes together as a whole, this is more about specifically Robin.
A lot of subnauticas fanbase is survival game fans, fans of horror, and... aliens n stuff! A lot of em are probably the type of people who don't care for stories in games, so I think the real issue comes from... leaning a bit too hard into making a poetic narrative. If I were playing a more story driven game, I think I'd really, really like robin as a character. But I can see why returning subnautica fans just critique her like shes the worst character ever. Why? Because shes... A LOT to take in for someone who isn't prepared for a like, poetically written story. I think the venn diagram of those who enjoy poetry and the indomitable human spirit, and those who enjoy subnautica, is... not a HUGE overlap. I have a lot more to say on below zero that I haven't said here - I think I'll wait till I feel complete with my second round with it. But let it be known, below zero is far from a terrible game, and it certainly isnt badly written Its just... within the context of subnautica, especially for many subnautica fans and typical gamers... its a bit out of touch, perhaps? I think many fans would actually be open to subnautica testing some new waters and dipping its toes into being something a little different, and from the beginning, below zero was Subnautica but with More of a Narrative My hypothesis is that many people were likely open to subnautica with more of a focus on the story being in the frontline, but were just... overwhelmed by robin as a character. She can be pretty jarring at times, and. I like what she says sometimes, I just imagine she turns a lot of people off from the game because of how... BOLD of a character she is. Robin is unapologetically... story-pilled
anyways, shoutouts to all the creature designs in both subnauticas

One thing that kills me about Alyou is that for their relationship to develop you kind of have to address and utilize the isolation that goes unsaid in the game.
Like, we know Robin isn’t some social outcast. She enjoyed her work and was pretty outgoing. The only live interaction we get to see with another human is with Hal where he says she’ll be missed. She quite literally abandons everything to investigate Sam’s death on a harsh alien planet on the far reaches of the galaxy. She chooses to make herself an outcast. Anyone close to her that hears that is counting the days before she’s assumed dead and missing.
Al-an on the other hand is actively seeking his own people. The entire game is him looking for the other precursors, a goal we can only assume extends well beyond the game. Of which for Robin we can only assume two outcomes: they find the architects within her lifespan or they don’t.
If they do find the architects, how does their relationship fair? Does Robin get sent back to human civilization a hero to architects but a nobody to her own people? There’s no guarantee if she wrote about the precursors anyone would even believe her. Or, doing so makes her and the architects a target for Alterra. There’s no guarantee she’d ever be able to find a job she loved ever again, or, best case scenario her writings about the species make her famous. What then? Sure she might have money and fame, but she’ll no doubt never be able to talk to Al-an again with loads of questions still unanswered.
But what if Robin brings Al-an with her back to the human world? She doesn’t seem to have a lot of faith in humans not acting terrible, trying everything from putting him in a cage to keeping him as a trophy. He might get a kick out of being a science subject at first, but we know he’s not quick to make friends. Maybe he shares some advancements with the humans? If he trusts them that is.
The same goes in reverse in what if Robin stays for some time with architect society? They’d no doubt want to learn everything they could about humans resources willing. However it took Al-an a whole game to understand the nuances of human socialization before they even let him near one. I can’t imagine Robin being comfortable in a whole society full of very tall, very advanced, and very nosey aliens. Best case scenario Al-an shares his etiquette and respect with the other architects or they mostly ignore her. Even with this outcome Robin is still in a world not built for her in mind. She can still make friends with the architects, but they’d no doubt feel clinically asocial.
Then of course the third option, both are fully isolated. They neither find the architects and Robin chooses not to return to human civilization. They both have eachother to keep company, but they’ll always be alone. Humans are designed to seek other humans, and architects no doubt feel the same being social creatures. Sure one another might be “good enough” but there will always be that unmistakable feeling of solitude. Alone together, till one of them dies.
Then what? Does the other move on, driven purely by their desire for scientific conquest on the far reaches of the stars? Adopt a pet and live their life alone like Maida?
The closest thing to a perfect ending is that both the architects are alive and Robin chooses to return to human civilization, but both species are able to build a good working relationship. Both Al-an and Robin are regarded as heroes on both sides and still have the ability to talk every once in awhile. It would be really neat to see precursors join the supporting cast for subnautica 2, being our access port for advanced tech. But then us Rob-an shippers have to face the idea that their relationship would probably end with just friendship or both would still be ostracized for being weirdos
In any solution though there has to be some compromise. A perfect ending isn’t necessarily possible.
This is why I think Alyou should officially be classified as tragic yuri send tweet

if i took requests for fics, mainly reader x canon, would anyone be interested??
fandoms being borderlands, subnautica, inscryption, dialtown, portal, creepypasta <- primarily these
POSSIBLY things like outlast, uncharted, the stanley parable, stardew, pokemon but specifically Guzma, bioshock, homestuck
idk i have like a huge range of interests, but i wanna work my brain a little bit and do some random oneshots to get back into the flow of writing so i can finally finish my main fic lol
fine with fluff, angst, smut, whatever, some darker topics I'll steer away from simply cuz of what im comfortable with but!! if i opened up taking small oneshot requests for x reader fics would anyone be interested??

What would your thoughts be on a role reverse AU, where humans are the ascendant species and Robin’s the one stuck in the containment cube? I feel like you’d have some thoughts :3c
(sorry my dumbass clicked unfollow instead of ask)
I think I've seen some neat reverse au ideas floating around and i think there is a actually a fic or two about it being the other way around one ao3!
Id definitly check em out!
As for me i have considered it before tho id still have Al-an an architect and Robin a human lol hear me out.
Like the precursors were successful in curing khaara but not before the bacteria managed to make it to sol's solar system, that being the case it was discovered by Alterra and brought back to earth in hopes of weaponized.
This of course was a complete mistake, as they could not control it and the bacteria predictably goes apeshit, infecting everything on earth.
Over the years many attempts to combat the bacterium fails and pretty much all is doomed when the last attempt at a vaccine fails.
Amidst this Sam a scientist once attempted to make a cure but her efforts were in vain, then turned her sights to another frontier, instead turning her talents to creating a way for man to outlive the virus by attempting to flee into stasis, new and a unstable technology but inarguably their last hope.
Yet due to the unauthorized use of materials and lack of time and general lack of support from her peers past her sibling, her creation mostly successful efforts goe unappreaciated and noticed by the wrong person.
Sam contracts khaara, infected by a jealous scientist who planned on stealing credit for her work. Buuuut before dying she managed to trick Robin into a stasis machine hidden in the lab.
Freezing her mind and body in a unstable but lucid like sleep within a cryopod
After it is implied Sam's work was stolen and the fualty prototype rebranded but as a cheap faulty series as they never fully understood Sams backwards blueprints and never discovered the self sufficient staisis machine.
This of course leads to humanity's extinction, the stasis machine failing.
Loooong time later precursors are asigned to Sol to clean up the pieces left behind by the bacteria, when Al-an comes to earth he finds a barren and alien planet, stuggling to recover, khaara has died out mostly but decontamination efforts were still required which is what lands a curious Al-an to explore the ruins of the long extinct species.
Noticing a odd energy pulse he diverges from his intended duties and tracks the tether until he ends up discovering the faulty stasis cryopad in a long destroyed laboratory.
And Robin still dreaming in the pod, but like her bodies heavily damaged from khaara and time breaching the tank.
Of course his reckless curiosity leads him to accidentally disrupting the power/breaking the tank by accident, and realizes the human's body starts rapidly deteriorating.
Without though shrimp boy ends up using alien technology to yank her mind into the his vessel with him.
Unaware that the disgruntled researcher was very much awake and very displeased, as for her one moment she was watching her dying sister scramble to hide blueprints, alterra agents tearing apart her lab, then a alien abducting her!.
In general i like to think Robin would be the one with the pessimistic outlook and internalized trauma, Al-an would likely be vary unprepared to deal with the boarderline suicidal and cynical head voice..
I like to think it would be a nice hurt comfort fic, with alot of inner healing and not only coming to terms with how ugly the world could be event at the end of it! But also learning to retrust people after the betrayal that murdered her sister!
I also want to note while the option to give Robin a body is plausible Al-An outright refuses until long later to offer her one as she has shown signs that she may be a danger to he's self.
Lots of slow steps and self indulgent fluff and validation because i live on that shit…but yeah that was it lol xD

So I got my boyfriend interested in Subnautica and bought the game for him on Steam so I could watch him play it. I was expecting him to be scared of everything since I've never seen any other reaction from new players, but he was absolutely fearless and laughed at everything- even when a crash fish blew up in his face!
So later he decides he wants to explore the Aurora, and I decided that even though it hasn't actually exploded yet, I should let him make that mistake on his own and learn from it himself because what fun is it if I tell him everything? I also just wanted to see him freak out after seeing the reaper leviathans.
So I only told him to go to his Lifepod to save his inventory for when he inevitably dies, and he was still dead set on going to the Aurora. He swam up behind it and initially died to radiation without seeing a reaper, and then he went back because he was determined to explore. He met a reaper, it roared and took a massive bite out of him, and he immediately was determined to scan it and proceeded to dodge around it on like 20 health while scanning it. Then, he took out his knife and started attacking it while calling the reaper a coward. Even more hilariously, it actually swam away from him.
He is now determined to one day kill a reaper.
