(was making a silly post and caught these looks) Danny's real reaction to the prospect of Steve going to North Korea, grave and serious as a heart attack (are those unshed tears??), this is the first time since they've met that Danny is faced with the real possibility of Steve leaving and not coming back, something he could only distantly fear before in case Steve got reactivated, now it's real and he's not handling it well at all, he doesn't know how to let Steve go without watching his back.
And then there's Steve, having an 'Oh' moment, caught completely off-guard by it, he's not used to anyone, let alone Danny, caring about him like this, he's not used to Danny showing it so openly, such raw vulnerability, admitting his worry instead of joking it off, perhaps Steve is not ready to face how that makes him feel.
This is the first time he has someone at home he is leaving behind, that makes it so much harder to leave and to risk your life, no wonder he immediately tries to lighten the mood, to turn it into a smug!Steve moment that gets Danny to engage in their usual banter, that he can handle, because he cannot handle Danny looking at him like that, realizing that if Danny asked him, really asked him not to go, he doesn't know if he would have the strength to refuse him anything. Danny wouldn't ask, that doesn't mean he won't plead with his eyes for Steve to come home (to him) safe.

Fuck it Friday.
@stephmcx was talking about a military AU with Eddie, Buck and Tommy and I know they got into fandom mainly for the hot pilot :-P
But it reminded me about the time I wrote and Eddie Begins AU where Buck was a Pararescue (PJ) whose unit was called to rescue Eddie's downed chopper.
See PJ's are more badass than Navy SEALs (ducks fruit) and I think more interesting. Sorry Chim! Who is a SEAL in this story.
I'm hoping @stephmcx still might enjoy it.

Buck stared out the window, the terrain disappearing into nothingness. Nighttime rescues had extra challenges in terms of extraction. It made it difficult to locate their patients, perform triage, and get them back safely into the chopper.
Han’s voice came over the coms. “The ops center called back. We’re flying in to save five possible patients now. The site’s still a hot combat zone.”
Even with all his gear on, Buck noticed Han’s body stiffen as he listened to his radio. He glanced at Buck. “We’ve confirmed it’s the 57th medevac unit.”
Anxiety gripped inside Buck's chest, followed by sinking dread. “Diaz’s unit?”

I finally have time to sit down and actually reply to this. Once again, thank you @stephmcx for thinking about me. Self-love is still something that doesn’t come naturally to me but I am proud of my writing so I’m happy to share!
Here’s my five favorite fics:
1. One Day More
What if… there was an explanation for Steve’s sudden decision to leave the island? Something he couldn’t share with anyone, not even his best friend?
This is the story that shaved years off my life and made me come to terms — or at least tried to — with the mess that was the series finale. Trying to make sense of what didn’t wasn’t easy, but I needed the boys to be reunited and on their way to something close to happiness. Together, as it should be. I still get feedback about it and it’s probably my most “popular” fic, the one with the most kudos and comments, so it deserved the first spot.
2. E Ho’okō Kuleana (To Do One’s Duty)
When the Governor is kidnapped and her life threatened by a vengeful criminal, Steve ends up making the ultimate sacrifice to save the island.
My one and only attempt at “Major Character Death”. I knew a lot of people wouldn’t read it, and yet I put it out there.
3. Drowning on Dry Land
“I can’t, Lou…” Steve whispered as soon as the woman disappeared from their sight, his voice so quiet that he almost missed it. “I can’t be the guy who shoots his partner. I just—I can’t be that guy…”
This is the first multi-chapter fic I wrote, and definitely one I’m proud of. I was still new in the fandom and unsure about my writing, but the idea of friendly fire wouldn’t leave me alone and Steve was the right character to explore it.
4. The Hardest Place to Be
Short coda to the pilot. Following the events of the episode, this is my take on what Steve might have done during his first weekend back on the island.
A character study of fresh-out-of-active-duty and traumatized McGarrett that picks up right where the pilot ends.
5. Echoes from the Past
Part 6 of the "Rescue Me" series. Sometimes, it's the little things that harm you.
Steve McGarrett and trauma - aka how PTSD can sneak up on you when you least expect it.

Writing patterns tag game!
Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
i was tagged by @flownwrong - thank you!! for the sake of the experiment, i skipped the two notably older fics that i posted to ao3 recently enough to show up in this top 10. it was a different time, man. (i mean, hardly, but i'm skipping them anyway.)

1) “Your hair smells nice,” Pa says.
2) Of course Pat takes notice when Pran gets his guitar out of its bag and takes it to the couch, but there’s an art to these things.
3) After all of the commotion, all of the stress, all of the dread, Steve finds the one face he’s looking for in the crowd of teens in formal wear.
4) Billy keeps saying fucking no no no to Joe about the working girls, until eventually the girls get bored and leave.
5) For three months, there’s a girl.
6) Hutch wakes up alone, but only nominally.
7) They fall into his apartment with Jill’s hand in his back pocket and his mouth attached to her clavicle – but they do fall, and when he adds a habit-driven attempt to kick the door shut, he ends up with a mouth full of her soft brown hair and she has to grab his shoulder to avoid being tripped by the doormat.
8) After they sell the restaurant, Kamekona doesn’t keep the name they gave it.
9) Most stabbings, Starsky has found in his years on the job, happen either out on the street or in the kind of apartment building mothers wouldn’t want their sons to live in.
10) When Hutch hops down the last few steps and exits the building door, there’s a familiar red car already waiting for him.

i think the main thing about opening lines for me is that i often try to cram in as much setup as possible, because there's a good chance the fic is mostly one dialogue scene and i've already written that part and now i'm forced to explain to my reader that they're not just voices hovering in indefinable darkness (and the easy way is to do that up top if i can, so it doesn't have to interrupt the flow of the dialogue). and then sometimes (1, 5, 6, maybe 8) i attempt to avoid throwing everyone headfirst into a soup of words (i love a ridiculously long sentence! 7, my beloved) by keeping it intentionally short and snappy. there are lots of signal words, too! two afters, when, of course, for three months. i still like "most stabbings" (9) as opening words. 4 and 5 both have the "girl" in them, which means nothing, but is still a fun coincidence in this sequence.

23. makes the dirty jokes.
based on the show material, danny makes Dad Jokes™, so this has to be steve, mr. 'if I didn't put my finger inside of you we wouldn't be having this conversation', 'professional what?' 'he got it falling out of bed', 'you never butter my pancakes' *waggles eyebrows* 'mcgarrett. it's probably even worse around his navy buddies because the way they are used to talk would probably make even danny blush.
he's got the maturity of a 13 year old in that regard, never saw an innuendo/pun/dirty joke opportunity he didn't take and he's only gonna dial it up after him and danny get together. ('i hate you' - 'that's not what you screamed last night ;)') danny will permanently ban 'pain in my ass' from his lexicon because he doesn't want to give steve more ammo. he doesn't know how he's still attracted to the guy. oh, right, he has eyes.
26. gets a tattoo when they’re drunk.
for obvious reasons, getting a tattoo isn't out of the ordinary for steve, he doesn't need to be drunk for that, so my guess would be danny. although, i suppose a drunk and sad steve could have gotten danny's name tattooed on his bicep in 6x11, wouldn't put it past him, lol.
i swear i read a fic where danny meant to get a tattoo of one of his gfs when drunk (don't remember if gabby or melissa) and ended up getting steve's name on his wrist which made the gf break up with him, naturally. he also immediately got an appointment to remove it but it could only be in a month so he had to walk with a bandage and lie about it. i do not remember when i read it or who wrote it or what else was in the fic, sorry.
when they are together if danny got a tattoo somewhere only steve can see as a surprise, steve would think it's the hottest thing ever, for sure, his possessive streak would soar, lol. (pretty sure i encountered that trope in fic too)
28. makes the other go for a walk.
steve is the definition of an outdoorsy type, his idea of a fun date is to hike up a mountain in a jungle, he's usually the one who has to practically drag danny because danny would rather lounge
i know in later seasons danny works out and willingly goes for runs but that's not the danny i know, lol.

Thank you, babe @stephmcx because of your great fic rec list I noticed this amazing Fic Rec Day! I'm not often on Tumblr anymore scrolling and discovering interesting things and I miss the interaction with other fandom folks. And here you are, posting a great fic rec list of the most epic OTP ever: Steve and Danny.
I have my McDanno 'go-to' fics I love dearly but for this list I put together a different number of McDanno stories from my bookmarks. I hope some of you haven't read them already. Maybe there's a chance you find an unknown great McDanno story. Currently reading: Gilded Cage by KJ Charles, because I started her novelette collection A Pocketful Of Lies and then two of the stories were a prologue and epilogue, respectively, to the Lilywhite Boys duology, so I had to go (re)read them in between
Currently watching: Also ongoing H50 rewatch, currently in s7; The Man From UNCLE; Due South rewatch; Percy Jackson and the Olympians; wading through back archives of Taskmaster and also Dirty Laundry (Dropout, not the Thai drama I only know exists bc of @itwoodbeprefect's current obsessions)

It's a completely idiotic thought brought on by my insomnia, but last night I suddenly realised that Steve’s 'I love you' at the end of 10x22, before leaving Danny (thus doing something he knows will hurt and/or disappoint Danny), has absolutely the same meaning, tone, and purpose, as Steve's 'I love you' in 7x01, when Danny is trying (and failing) to make him reason and not throw his life away. It's basically the only method Steve's devised to stop Danny and offer some sort of justification for the shit he's about to pull, despite knowing he's doing something wrong.
Ok I swear in my mind it made sense, but after today and with only a few hours sleep I'm not logical anymore!
ok so! here is my take on it but I would love to have others chime in cuz this fandom has the bestest metas and thinkee thoughts.

Steve is a SEAL and SEALs get a ton of training. He's also a mess, thanks to shitty parenting, trauma of his mom's death and Freddy's death and his dad's death, and a whole lot of PTSD, on top of a pretty rough re-entry into civilian life.
I think Steve honestly means it when he says it both times, but he is still being emotionally manipulative. He is taking the counseling and doing what he is trained to do--use the tools he has been given to achieve the end goal.
What's really awful, but heartbreakingly accurate, is we're also seeing in both scenes how Steve can so easily fall into Doris' pattern of emotionally manipulating her family.
Thats the problem with abuse and trauma. People are so comfortable with these patterns that form such a huge part of their lives that it's seductively easy to repeat those patterns, even when they fighting tooth and nail not to.
This is also why so many stories about survivors make me do a hard eye roll. Being a survivor is not about suddenly being magically all better. Being a survivor is stepping into the shower and realizing that something you did at work last month was super shitty--and then feeling super guilty it took a full month for you to even grab a clue.
So yeah, you'e right but I believe Steve's not consciously aware of what he is doing. And I have always read Danny's expressions when Steve says it as Danny going into 'dad' mode.
Kids will often go through a 'I love you' phase where they try to wriggle out of consequences and Danny really seems to be like, Uh huh. I didn't buy it when Grace did it when she was three and I am not buying it now. But if you really want to act like a toddler, Steven, I'll humor you and say 'I love you' back.

First Ever Ship: of this I'm sure. I was 7 years old, Saint Seiya was airing for the first time in Italy, and I decided Hyoga and Shun were a perfect match for each other. Friendship-wise and romantic-wise, even if I couldn't care less. But the resuscitation scene is famous not for nothing. I didn't even know I was shipping them but I did 😂
Last Song: uh, so, I'm in a really BAD spot right now, so I'm not listening to music. Just some endless playlist of rainy coffee shop with bossa nova piano ambience stuff, to shut the world outside. Or lofi. Lofi is always a safe haven.
Last Movie: honestly? Too many years ago to remember. I'm not big on movies, I cannot watch tv in peace and after 8 hours drawing maps on pc for work I surely won't turn mine on. Probably it was my 56th rerun of LOTR trilogy, ten years ago.
Currently Reading: a book I purchased years ago and never read, like always. Compulsory shopping, especially if I find used books. It's If Cats Disappeared from the World by Genki Kawamura. It's a bit disappointing so far, some banality about the important things of life, but since I can only read while commuting and I'm having difficulties getting back to my usual standard of a book per week like before I started university 8 years ago, if it's not some essay or handbook or textbook, it's ok for now. Anyway I just finished reading the marvelous essay by Rifkin, Hydrogen Economy, which I purchased exactly 20 years ago and which predicted exactly what would become of our fossil fuel economy today.
Currently Watching: eh, same as before. They were airing again the Italian dub of H50 during pre-dinner time so I tried to catch up, but now it's stopped at s3 finale to air something else, so nothing specific.
Currently Consuming: just finished dinner, consisting of broth soup, breaded fish, salad and fruit :)
Currently Craving: .....let's skip this, it's just too sad.
