Sweet Reunions - A Slarole Fic
Ron's been away doing long haul flights, Carole and the kids miss him.
~~~
For a prompt list, "A & B give each other flowers at the same time"
Words: 999
The airport was busy, full of people picking up and dropping off, running around trying to catch flights. Carole lifted Will onto her shoulder, he was too busy staring at the planes through the windows. Bradley's eyes were on the gate as people came trickling out with bags and gifts. Families came home from holidays, business men with fancy mobile phones. No Ron.
As usual, the airport was sterile with cleanliness. Plants, fake and real decorated the corners of the room. People lay sleeping on benches and filled the various shops around them. The blue sky had few clouds and little wind, something she thought could be good for flying, although she had no idea really.
“When’s he gonna get here, Momma?” Bradley asked.
“Soon, baby, soon.”
Ever since Ron had become an airline pilot, he hadn't done too many long haul flights, they were just too tiring and he missed her and Bradley. Then after she’d gotten pregnant, and decided to keep the baby, he’d done solely domestic flights, only venturing to other places in the Americas if he had to do anything longer.
Unfortunately, or perhaps a little fortunately because Ron had some holidays saved up, their little baby Wilhelm had been born premature. He’d come about a month early, they’d told Bradley he’d just been so excited to meet them that he came early. They on the other hand had been terrified, Carole needed an emergency caesarean section, they hadn’t been able to see him at first and they had no idea what was going on.
He’d begun to recover. He was their little fighter. They got to hold him, Carole got to feed him, Bradley, her mum and sister, one of Ron’s sisters, the one he kept in touch with, his grandma and some of the pilots got to meet him. All in all, they felt lucky. She thought that maybe Goose was looking after them, wherever he was, making it known that she was doing the right thing by moving on.
He hadn’t been responding too well for a baby so they wanted to test his hearing. They hadn’t thought too much of it at first, Will was having so many tests done that they didn’t bat an eyelid at another one. It was only when they came back saying that his range of hearing, or lack of, made him legally deaf.
She stroked their little bean’s head, he had a hearing aid on each ear, one blue and one green. Compared to the size of his head, they looked rather big. They thought they made him even more adorable.
As she hoisted him up, her hand crinkled on the flowers. She knew it was a bit of a role reversal but Ron helped her enough on the garden, even taking over when she was too pregnant, that she knew he liked them. The chrysanthemums in her hand, bright red and pink, were all for him.
"Momma, there he is!" Bradley pointed as Ron turned the corner in his pilot's uniform.
Ron saw them and started to run. Carole turned Will around and signed "Poppa". They'd been going to classes as a family and had been teaching him some basic signs. He knew who "Poppa" was.
"There you all are!"
He placed his suitcase down and went to hand her the roses only to notice Carole had flowers too. They went to swap them but struggled as Will wiggled to reach his Poppa. Ron ended up placing his on the floor to take her's, she managed to bend down to the six roses he got her.
"Hi, missed you," she said and kissed him.
It was a quick peck but still made her feel warm. For so long after Goose died, she'd felt so alone. A black hole seemed to take every slight positive feeling. She'd tried to get a whisper of the happiness Goose had made her feel that Christmas when she'd kissed Ron, but he'd been courteous to let her down easy by reminding her that she wasn't in the right headspace.
Although that made her feel worse, he'd been right. It was only until a few years later when she was getting tired of feeling like all the colour was being sapped out of the world, and Ron was making more of an effort, that they'd given this a try. Now, five years and a baby later, she could safely say they were going well.
"How was the flight, pops?" Bradley asked.
He'd only started calling him that when Carole got pregnant. He'd made sure it was known that Goose was still Dad, but now his new brother would have the same mum as him, while Slider was his dad, he thought it appropriate that he call him something similar.
"Good, not a lot of turbulence, no problems, smooth sailing, I handled it like a champ," he said, ruffling his hair, then reached for Wilhelm. "And how's my little bean?"
He signed "You good, bean?" to him, they'd been learning for a year but were still not the best. All they knew is that they were trying their best. Will just kept signing "Poppa" while babbling to him.
"Well that's good to know squirt, really good," he kissed him on the cheek then looked at the flowers. "These are really nice babygirl, how about we get them home, I'm exhausted."
They began to walk away. Bradley began to talk about school, he was starting Middle School in September, Will carried on to babble, even moving his hands in babbly signs that meant nothing.
Carole whispered as they tried to find the car, "I hope you're not too tired because that uniform does great things for your arms," she reached her hand down and squeezed his butt. "Your ass too."
He turned to her, grinning, "I can always spare a little energy for you, baby."
"You're gonna need more than a little."
She loved the look on his face as she winked.
I introduce you to my "Carole and Slider get together after Goose dies" AU. Slider takes it slow and holds her as she cries over Goose. She didn't think about having kids with Slider until she got pregnant. There's just a lot of guilt on her part for moving on, but eventually she realised that that's not healthy and tried to live a life Goose would be proud of her.
Thanks for reading!
I really want to read some Top Gun: Maverick fanfic. But there are several issues preventing me:
1) Movie is still so new that there's hardly been time for people to write any and the few that I've found on AO3 were mostly written before the movie came out so they're not even remotely related to canon.
2) Everyone I've seen who is talking about wanting to write Maverick fanfic are slash shipping or poly shipping, neither of which I like or enjoy.
3) And the majority of fanfic from the original Top Gun movie are all slash fics between Maverick and Iceman, and again, not my thing.
When Penny and Mav are away on their honeymoon, however, Y/N finally gets to meet the fourth member of their little family, Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw. And when he makes the mistake of calling Amelia a twelve-year-old, she takes matters into her own hands to get him back for it while ALSO getting two of her favorite people to admit their feelings for each other.
"Alright, you said your brother was coming to pick you up?" I asked, helping Amelia gather her things before swinging her backpack onto her shoulder.
"Sort of. He's not really my brother, but he acts like one," she said.
"Hm. Alright..."
I didn't push for more details as we headed out of the library together. I'd been tutoring Amelia for a few months now, and we'd quickly become good friends even though I was a lot older than her. She was my favorite student I'd had to date, and I had to admit, I was a little jealous that someone else who wasn't related to her had grabbed the honorary sibling title before me.
Still, I was happy she was so happy. Her mom usually picked her up, and when her mom wasn't free her now-stepdad rolled up on his motorcycle, much to Amelia's excitement. Her mom and now-official step-dad had recently gotten married, and were currently on their honeymoon. Which left the sort-of brother to pick her up.
"You know, it's not gonna be much longer before you get your license," I mused, giving Amelia an exaggerated grin. "Pretty soon you're going to be driving yourself to and from school and tutoring and whatever else."
"Yeah, and I'm gonna steal Mav's motorcycle to do it."
"Atta girl!"
We laughed and shared a high five as we walked down the library steps. A tall, handsome man with aviators and a mustache waited, his arms crossed as he leaned against a car I recognized as Penny's Porsche.
"Hey! What are you doing with my mom's car?" Amelia called as we approached him. Apparently, this was the sort-of older brother.
"It's my payment for babysitting you while Mav and your mom are gone," he called back. "I get to drive the Porsche and the bike."
"Well that's dumb. You could've gotten cash. Put it towards buying your own bike."
He just scoffed and rolled his eyes, then looked to me as Amelia and I came to a stop in front of him. He gave me a charming smile and offered his hand for a shake.
"Rooster," he said as I took his hand.
"Y/N," I replied. "It's nice to meet you."
"You too. All this kid does is talk you up. Honestly, I've been getting a little jealous."
I smiled. "Well, don't worry, because she's been saying nothing but good things about you, too. I was actually feeling a little jealous myself."
"Well, cheers to that," he said with another gorgeous smile and a wink. We held each others' stares for a few beats, and I could feel my face heating up. We both snapped out of it when Amelia loudly cleared her throat.
"Let's go, Rooster. I'm hungry and I have stuff to do."
"Alright, alright, relax. We're going." He looked back at me again. "It was nice meeting you, Y/N."
"You too, Rooster. Maybe I'll see you around."
"Maybe you will."
He shot me one last grin as he walked around to the driver's side of the car, Amelia climbing into the passenger's side. She waved at me out the window as the pair pulled away, and I watched them disappear down the road.
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly, then forced myself to put Rooster out of my mind. I had other things to do today besides be distracted by Amelia's handsome sort-of older brother.
************
Amelia's POV
"You think she's cute, don't you?" I asked, poking Rooster in the side as he pulled away from the library where we'd left Y/N.
"What? Amelia, come on."
I snorted. "If that's the best response you've got then you must really have a thing for her."
"I do not have a thing for her. What do you know, anyway? Aren't you like twelve?"
"I'm fifteen!"
"Same difference."
I scowled at him, but he just grinned. I huffed and crossed my arms, staring out the window instead of at Rooster. If he was going to be an idiot about it, then I was going to take matters into my own hands.
Maybe I even would've tried to loop him in if he hadn't called me twelve.
****************
Y/N's POV
I wandered into the bar owned by Amelia's mom a few weeks later, tentatively putting my head through the door first before stepping all the way inside. Amelia had asked me to do our tutoring session here today, before the bar opened, since she was apparently going sailing with her mom right after our lesson.
"Y/N!" Amelia called happily, waving me over from the far side of the bar. I smiled and walked to meet her, much more confident now that I knew I hadn't accidentally wandered in somewhere I wasn't supposed to go.
"Hey, Amelia. How's it going? This place looks great."
"Thanks," she said. "I'll tell my mom you said so."
"Where is she, by the way?"
"She's working on the boat with Mav. We're all going to sail it over to the shop later, since it needs some repairs and Maverick doesn't know how to fix boats."
"Isn't he in the navy?"
"That's what my mom always says."
We shared a laugh as I sat down next to Amelia. I unloaded all the books from my bag, setting them out in front of us, then opened the first one.
"Alright, let's get started..."
We worked for our usual hour, with Maverick and Penny breezing through a few times to say hi. I couldn't stop myself from hoping Rooster might make an appearance, but he didn't. I tried to keep myself from feeling too disappointed.
We'd seen each other a few times now, since that first meeting. Usually in the context of him picking up Amelia. Every time I saw him, my heart beat a little faster, and although we didn't really have long conversations, they were good ones. I found myself thinking about him a lot more often than I wanted to admit.
Finally, at the end of the hour, I wrapped up the lesson and Amelia and I put away all the notes and notebooks. Penny and Maverick wandered back in, both of them ready to get on the boat with Amelia now that she was free.
"I'll be right down," Amelia told her parents. "Just need to put my books away."
"Alright. We'll see you down there," said Maverick, giving me a wave as he went. Penny smiled and kissed Amelia on the head, ruffling her hair as she pulled away.
"Thanks for coming here today, Y/N," she said. "It's always a pleasure to have you around."
"It's a pleasure to be around," I replied with a smile. "I'm sure it's no secret, but I absolutely adore Amelia. She's one heck of a good kid."
"She sure is." Penny smiled fondly at her daughter, then took a few backwards steps to follow Maverick down to the boat. "We'll see you soon I'm sure, Y/N."
I smiled and waved as she went, and Amelia struggled to shove the rest of her books into her bag.
"Do you want help with that?" I asked. She huffed, tried for another minute, then shoved it towards me.
"Yes please."
I smiled and started working on the bag. Amelia shifted anxiously from foot to foot while she waited, and I could tell she was itching to get out of here and join her parents on the boat.
"You want me to put these away for you somewhere?" I asked. "If it's close, I can wrap this up and you can go help your parents."
"Yes please! Thank you so much! They go in the back closet, on the top shelf. I'll take them home later tonight, when we all get back."
"Sounds good. Have a fun trip over, and try to teach Mr. Navy something about boats while you're out there, alright?"
"Oh please," said Amelia. "He's hopeless."
I chuckled as she marched out of the room in a whirlwind. Finally, I managed to get the last of the books into the bag. I headed for the closet Amelia had pointed towards, carefully maneuvering around the crates and boxes towards the shelving in the back. I'd just reached up to put the bag on the top shelf when I heard a commotion behind me.
"Come on, Rooster, it'll just take a second!"
"Amelia, what the hell are you- Hey!"
I whirled around to find Rooster stumbling through the closet door. A look at the doorway showed Amelia standing there, apparently after shoving him, a massive grin on her face.
"Don't waste this opportunity by being stupid," she cheerfully instructed him. I started to ask what the hell she was doing, but before I could, she slammed the closet door on us. I heard the click of a lock.
A second later, Rooster was at the door, hammering at it with one fist while he tried the doorknob with the other. No luck.
"Amelia! Amelia, you get back here and open this door right now!" he yelled. As expected, he got no response.
"What the hell is going on?" I asked, walking over to Rooster. He grimaced, looked at me, then turned back to the door.
"I don't know," he muttered. "Some kind of dumb prank, probably."
I put a hand on my hip and raised an eyebrow.
"Since when does Amelia pull dumb pranks?"
Rooster sighed and lowered his head before finally taking a step away from the door and looking at me. To my surprise, he had a faint blush on his neck.
"She's trying to mess with me," he finally said, running a hand through his hair. "She keeps insisting that I have a thing for you, and I called her a twelve-year-old, so... I guess this is her payback."
"Oh."
We stood there for a few beats, avoiding looking at each other, and then I took a deep breath.
"Was she right? Do you have a thing for me?" I physically cringed at the awkwardness of the question, but I had to know. Rooster's blush deepend.
"I mean, I..." he cleared his throat and fidgeted. "I definitely think you're... cute."
He immediately scrunched up his face like he was kicking himself for the words that had just come out of his mouth. I could relate.
"Well..." I managed. "I, uh... I think you're cute, too."
His head snapped up to look at me, disbelief and hope written all over his face. I gave him a tentative smile.
"You do?" I nodded. He laughed and smiled, the tension easing out of his body. I felt the tension washing out of the room. "God, look at us. We're fully grown adults stumbling over admitting a crush for each other in a closet like it's middle school. Now who's twelve?"
"I feel like Amelia was hoping we'd be at exactly this point when she shoved you in here," I agreed. He nodded, then took a deep breath.
"So... as much as I hated being called out for it, I actually have had a thing for you since that first day we met. You're smart, you're funny, you're frankly gorgeous... what more could a guy ask for?"
I smiled at the floor, trying not to combust on the spot from the compliments.
"I feel the same way," I said. After a beat, I brought myself to meet Rooster's eyes again. "You're hysterical, and I love watching how you are with Amelia. And I almost tripped down the steps you were so handsome when I first walked out of the library."
He laughed good-naturedly, a smile staying on his face as he took a few steps towards me.
"So does this mean if I ask you on a date, you'll say yes?"
"Mmm, I don't know. Give it a try and let's find out."
He grinned and took a few more steps towards me. He stopped just a few inches from me, then put his arm against the wall next to my head and leaned against it. My heart sped up.
"Y/N, would you like to go on a date with me? Like as soon as we get out of this damn closet?"
"Absolutely," I said, unable to keep a massive smile off my face. He smiled too, then pushed off the wall and headed back to the door.
"Alright, I'm getting us out of here. And then we can go grab a coffee from a nice place I know, if that sounds good?"
"That sounds great."
He shot me another smile, and my heart melted. Then, he turned to the door with determination. I could see he was about to break it down, so I quickly stepped in.
"I think I might have an easier solution," I said. He watched carefully as I took Amelia's backpack off the shelf and dug through it until I found a few spare bobby pins. I bent them into long, straight-ish tools, then moved back to the door.
"Are you about to pick the lock with bobby pins?" asked Rooster. I hummed in confirmation. "That is so badass. And so hot."
I laughed and shot him a smile over my shoulder, then went back to working on the door. I hadn't practiced my lock-picking skills since I'd been obsessed with spy novels in college, so it took me a little longer than I would've liked, but eventually the lock clicked open.
"You. Are. Amazing," said Rooster as I straightened and turned to him with a grin.
"Thank you. I try my best. Now let's go get that coffee, shall we?"
I held out a hand, and Rooster didn't hesitate before taking it. He pulled me closer to him as we stepped out of the closet and headed for the doors of the bar, and I happily leaned into him.
Amelia was never going to let it go that she was right and that she technically deserved the credit for getting us together. I quickly decided I didn't care, though. I had a good feeling that Rooster would be worth it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You sigh, your social battery is running low. You feel like you’ve been at the hard deck for hours when it’s only been, maybe two. You don’t want to look at the clock and get annoyed when you see what time it is.
It’s just one of those days when all you want to do is go home and take a nap with the kids (even though your girl, Maryanne probably wouldn’t stay still long enough to enjoy a nap). You know for a fact your boy, Edwin would want nothing more than to nap with you (oh, how you love your mama’s boy).
The door slams shut; howls of laughter fill the nearest corner.
You take a deep breath and put on your best customer service smile and make sure your voice doesn’t waver, not wanting anyone to know how tired you are. As you refill another customer's drink, you glance around the room not letting your smile fall. ‘The pilots are here. Great.’
Penny stands beside you, also watching the group pilots. “You ready for the next rush?” she asks.
“As ready as I can be, Penny my dear.”
“Someone’s tired.”
“What does that mean?”
“You only use that nickname when you’re tired. Do you want to take your break now?”
You turn to her, “and leave you alone? No, I’d rather not have feeling bad checked off on what I feel today.”
“It won’t be that bad. Plus, we have Marty and Cody working again which is why,” she leans closer to you, whispering, “we haven’t had to do any of the heavy lifting.”
That gets you to crack a smile. “Okay, okay. After they get their drinks, I’ll head into the back and start doing inventory, yeah?”
“That’s not a break.”
“It could be considered a break to some.”
“I’m not a part of that group.”
“Obviously.”
“Ladies.” You two turn to see Penny’s boy toy (you like to tease her from time to time), Pete sitting there with a smile stretching across his lips.
“Pete.” “Pete.” The two of you say with two obvious tones.
“Penny,” he nods before glancing over at you. “You doing, okay?”
You sigh, throwing the rag on the bar top. “Why does everybody keep asking me that? I’m fine. I’m good. I’m here, aren’t I?”
“Okay, okay. I won’t ask again. How are the-”
“A round of beers and a soda.”
“With beer nuts!”
“And a thing of beer nuts, thanks,” the blond orders without looking up from his phone.
You tilt your head, not appreciating his tone and look over at Penny, nodding your head at him.
She gestures for you to take care of him as a customer calls her over by name.
You pat the edge of the bar top, “I’ll get your drink in a second, Pete. I gotta take care of this real quick.”
“Take your time, I’ve got all night.”
You smile, grabbing the beers, setting them on the counter in front of the blond. “Date night, is it?”
“Maybe.”
“Don’t keep her out too late. You know, Penny will be off in Pete land that she forgets to actually text Amelia and I’m the go to information person when you two are out.”
“Don’t worry, tonight will be movie night with my two girls.”
You set the beer nuts beside the drinks and smile at Pete. “Aw, that’s too cute but how are you gonna pick a movie? You know Penny likes those action movies while Amelia prefers something with a little more comedy.”
“That’s why I’ll be out getting dinner.”
“Oh,” you chuckle through your nose, “so, you’re gonna let the two hash it out.”
“I wouldn’t phrase it like that.”
“That’s exactly what you’re doing.” You turn back to the occupied pilot in front of you. “Excuse me?”
He hums.
“I’d prefer it if you actually looked at me when I'm talking to you.”
He lifts his head and loses his breath (which you don’t know). “Well,” he smirks, preparing to lay his charm on you.
“No,” you shake your head. “Don’t try that, it won’t work. Is this going on a tab or am I taking your money now?”
“Straight to the point.” He gulps, a nervous smile takes place, all confidence he had a second ago disappeared. “I- I’ll do a tab.”
“Name?”
“Jake.”
“Hangman, hurry up man!”
“Or Hangman, I take it?” You glance up at him through your lashes.
He nods, “it’s a likely possibility.”
“Better take your drinks and snacks over there before your friends get too rowdy.”
“Right.” He grabs all the drinks and works and holding the beer nuts (for Bob). “Thanks again.”
“Yep.” You serve a small group of people before pouring Pete his drink. “You got something you want to say Pete?”
-
Jake glances over at the bar, not looking for anyone in particular (lie) and his gaze happens to fall on you.
He watches as you and Pete talk, wondering how you know his former teacher.
-
“Me? No,” he shakes his head, “no.”
“Sure, you don’t.”
“I- are you sure you’re, okay?”
“Honestly?”
“I’d prefer it and I think it would be good for you.”
“It’s that time.”
“Time for?”
“The time he decided he didn’t want to be a part of our life anymore, when he walked out on us.”
“Oh, why didn’t you say anything?”
-
Jake may not know you, but he does want to, so he can make sure you don’t look this upset again (if only he knew what the future entailed).
-
“I’m not going to make my pity party anybody’s business.”
“It’s not a pity party, you know you have a right to be upset.”
“I do but I also feel like I should have moved on from this. It’s been- what, six- almost seven years now?”
“Grief and heartache don’t heal fast enough for everyone.”
You close your eyes, pinching the bridge of your nose, “I’m sorry. I didn’t think-”
“It’s okay. It’s okay. I mean I still miss them, and our situations may be different but what we feel is the same. You just gotta take your time. No one will judge you for that.”
You chuckle, wiping the corner of your eyes. “When did you get so wise?”
“I didn’t. I just remember a lot of words.”
“And Penny wonders why I worry about the two of you?”
“Now that was uncalled for.”
“But I’m not wrong.” You breathe out a deep sigh, “thank you, Pete.”
He nods, lifting his drink to take a sip.
You close your eyes, taking a few seconds to gather yourself enough to pass by the customers. You pat Cody’s arm, telling him to take over while you do inventory.
-
“You can do this,” you whisper to yourself. “You can do this.”
You grab the clipboard off the desk and start your new task.
-
“Bars closing in an hour,” Marty informs you as he grabs a box of liquor. “Okay- wait- wait- how much of that do we have left?”
“I think this is the last of it.”
“Thank you!”
“No problem.”
You set the clipboard back onto Penny’s desk and exit the back room.
-
“Hey, Peggy Sue.”
Penny shakes her head, “you’re never going to give up with that nickname, are you?” She sets the clean glass back in its proper place.
You shake your head, “never.”
“Alright then.”
“If you want to leave early, you can. I’ve got this.”
“Are you sure?” She glances over at the clock.
“It’s only gonna be roughly fourth five minutes before you need to leave. I can ever lock up.”
“Are you sure? You’ll be completely alone.”
You nod, “I got this.”
“Thank you, my dear.” She comes around the bar, hugging you tightly. “Thank you.”
You chuckle, awkwardly patting her arm, “go, go. You’ll have fun and that’s all that matters.”
“You swear you don’t have to go home early? Mary and Eddie are doing alright?”
“They’re fine. Maryanne is at a friend’s house for a sleepover, all set to be picked up in the morning and Edwin is at home with the babysitter.”
“Okay.”
“Okay?”
“I’m going. I’m going.”
-
You double check the doors, make sure the tables and bar are wiped down, the information for the next order is ready.
“All set,” you whisper. “Time to lock up and hit the road.” You grab your purse and pull out your keys while you hum “hit the road jack”.
There’s the click and you set the work keys back in your purse.
The gravel crunching beneath the stranger’s shoes puts you on high alert. You place your keys between your fingers. “Whoever it is, you should know to turn around and go back where you came from before you get an ass kicking.”
“Uh- shit- I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to alarm you or anything.”
You turn around to find the cocky pilot.
“I just- I felt I should apologize for the way I acted earlier. I shouldn’t have done that. Lord knows I was taught better than that.”
“And you thought waiting until it was late at night, waiting for who knows how long to apologize.”
“Who’s to say I didn’t want to wait until her next shift to talk to a pretty lady?”
Your brows rise slightly, “oh?”
“Could I- would it be alright if I asked for your number?”
“You sure move fast, don’t you?”
He straightens his posture. “I didn’t hear a no.”
“I guess you didn’t but, how do I know you won’t send me graphic and inappropriate pictures?”
“I won’t send you anything you wouldn’t enjoy.”
You gasp, throwing your head break as you chuckle.
He finds himself smiling, feeling better now than he did before.
“If I give you my number, do you promise not to stalk me?”
“I was gonna ask the same thing.”
“Okay, jokester. Give me your phone.” You hold your hand out for him to set his phone in your hand.
“Woah, hey now.”
“What?”
“We’ve just met. How do I know you won’t run off with my phone the second you get it?”
“Do I look like the kind of person to do that?”
He shrugs, “no, but you never know.”
“Okay,” you pull your phone out of your pocket, “we trade on the count of three. We say one, two, three then we trade. Got it?”
“Got it.”
“One. Two. Three.”
You return the others phone almost as fast as you got them.
“Jake?”
“Yep.”
The corners of your mouth twitch slightly, tugging upwards hard enough for someone to tell if you’re smiling unless they were looking at you (which he was). “Cute but I don’t think it fits with your whole “cocky, I could careless” attitude.”
He chuckles, rubbing the back of his neck, “you caught that.”
“Mm-hmm, kind of hard not to.”
“Right,” he mutters, averting his gaze from yours.
You’ve seen him around the bar, honestly all the pilots but more so him but he usually has some random woman around his arm, and it’s never been the same one.
“Are you okay?” You ask with a concerned tone.
“What?” Your question catches him off guard.
“Are you okay?”
“I,” he pauses, trying to come up with an answer maybe the same answer he’s been giving everyone, but he doesn’t want to lie to you. “Why do you ask?”
“You seemed distracted today and there was no young thing hanging off your arm, giggling at everything you say.”
One corner of his lips tugs upwards. “Didn’t realize you noticed about me.”
You tilt your head, staring at him with a raised brow (giving him the “mom” look like Maryanne says), “that’s not an answer.”
“Is pass an option?”
You sigh, “if you don’t want to answer the question that’s fine but I need to-”
“No, no. I’m sorry. I- I did have a “date”,” he says with a grimaced expression. “But they had to cancel which felt like a huge relief and I’ve never felt that way. Ever. I just- I also haven’t felt like this...”
“Let me guess, ever?”
He nods, chuckling, “yep.”
“Can I ask you something without you getting upset?”
“Fire away.” The nickname sweetheart sits on the tip of his tongue.
“How do you do it?”
“Do what?”
“Go out with a bunch of different women whenever you’re back here. I mean- I thought- wouldn't you want to be with one person who could support you and be there for you whenever. You know you would have someone who knows who well enough to help you after you come home from a- a mission whether it was a good one or a bad one. You wouldn’t have to ask because you’d already have that support. I- uh- I just realized I'm rambling about something that is not my business. I’m sorry.”
Jake shakes his head, “no, no. It’s okay. Honestly, it’s kind of refreshing. No one’s asked me before. I- sometimes I do think about that, but I don’t think it’s going to happen for me.”
You furrow your brows, “why?”
“Have you met me? All people see is the asshole Hangman who leaves his teammates behind. Why would that guy find someone to be by his side?”
“Has anyone else seen the other parts of you or are you so programmed to be an asshole that you can’t?”
He says nothing.
Your phone buzzes, you turn it on to find that Maryanne asking if you’re home yet because Edwin stole the babysitter’s phone to call her asking the same question. He’s not going to sleep until your home.
“I’m gonna take it that your silence means you’re so programmed to be an asshole which sucks but if you try to be less of that “Hangman asshole” maybe you’d find something unexpected. I also have to go. Keep this conversation in mind, alright? Later, Jake.”
He nods, watching as you run to your car, hair swaying side to side.
After your car exits the parking lot, he realizes he’s alone... again and heads to his own car, making his way home.
The next night Jake and the others come into the hard deck for some fun, none of them have a mission coming up soon so they figured why not actually enjoy the night and drink until they can’t anymore at their favorite bar.
-
“How was the sleepover?” asks Penny.
“Maryanne had a blast,” you answer with a smile.
No one quite knows what’s happened to you, but no one is certainly going to question it.
“That’s good to hear. I know you were a little out of it and were worried how she was going to be. Believe it or not, I was the same way with Amelia.”
“I’m gonna with or not.”
“Oh, don’t be like that.”
You laugh as you move towards the end of the bar, serving a customer.
-
Jake offers to get the first round of drinks.
-
He starts walking towards the bar, spotting you almost immediately.
You offer a wave with a small smile.
He waves back and almost bumps into someone right after.
You cover your mouth, not wanting him to see.
He shakes his head; you know he sees you “trying” not to laugh at him but neither of you care. “Hey,” you greet, leaning on the bar top.
“Hey back to you.”
“You gonna order something?”
“Is staring at the therapist bartender not on the menu tonight?”
You scoff, “flirting will get you nowhere.”
-
Natasha smacks Javy’s arm.
“What?” He asks, rubbing his arm.
“When did he get close with the bartender?”
“I- oh. Oh,” Javy starts chuckling.
“What?”
“I don’t know they got close, but it looks like he’s got a crush.”
“Are you serious?” She asks with a smirk stretching across her lips.
“Big time.”
“How much you wanna bet?”
“Not now,” he shakes his head.
She tilts her head and furrows her brows, “why not now?”
“He won’t make a move for a long time.”
She shakes her head, lining up her shot. “I may not be betting on Bagman, but I just made fifty off your dumbass.”
“That’s cheating!”
“It’s not cheating if I play by the rules.”
Javy narrows his eyes at her. “Double or nothing.”
“You’re on.”
-
“I think flirting is giving me all that I want.”
“And what’s that, Jake from the bar?”
“A few more seconds to talk to you.”
You click your tongue, “you’re good I’ll give you that. A round of beers plus a soda and beer nuts, right?”
“You remembered. Does this mean I’m your favorite?”
You shake your head, “no.”
He grabs the order, “you’re breakin’ my heart, sweetheart.”
“Have fun, Jake.”
He walks away with a satisfied smile on his face.
Penny stands beside you with her hands on her hips, “what was that?”
“That was nothing.”
“That was not nothing.”
“I work to do. Bye Penny!” You move to the end of the bar as quick as you can, catching Jake’s eye.
He raises his beer to you; you nod and resume with your previous activities.
-
“When’s the wedding?” Bradley asks.
“I’m not listening to you, Chicken.”
The pilots chuckle, knowing full well that Jake “Hangman” Seresin is completely smitten with you.
rooster would knock you up and then accuse you of being the one who cheated but hangman would be the one to step up and help take care of your kid despite it being not biologically his kid / and your reply
Do it! I would love to see a stepdad Jake fic (I’m not sure if there are any - no one come at me if there are) reader and jake fall in love because duh! and Bradley trying to come back once he’s realised his mistake but it’s to late, he either agrees to co parent or just leave again but G do it!
No pressure!
oh boy oh boy the Bradley defenders would burn me at the stake with that one.
but I would do a step-dad Jake fic, maybe not where Bradley is the baby daddy necessarily, because I do value my mental health. But I could see where Jake would get so much shit for it. I think his parents, honestly, would be like "Jacob, what the hell are you doing??" and the Dagger squad being like "dude. . . a mom???"
I also think it would be a big test to whether or not Jake can really be the man that we all think he is. We already know he's a great pilot but can he really be this dependable, respectful, reasonable man we all keep talking him up to being.
I don't normally post toxic headcanons...
But what if Jake's initial jealousy for Rooster results from his happy home?
Yes, Rooster is a person that lost both parents but he still has his stepdad, a loving one. Imagine that Hangman's dad used to be abusive.He was violent towards him as well as his mom. Maybe Hangman's thinking, "Being an orphan is better than having an abusive dad."
What do you think about this ?
You’ll all be happy – Bradley Bradshaw “Rooster”
Tumblr media
Summary: You and Bradley fall hard and quick, but will he make the choice to stay with you and be a stepdad? What will your brother, Jake, think?
Pairing: reader x rooster / reader x brother!hangman
Word count: 5.6K
Warnings: mentions of unhappy parents, brief mention of Goose’s passing, thoughts of anxiety/small mental spiraling, talk of child birth
A/N: here it is! I hope you all like it, this is the fastest I’ve written this long of a fic in over a year!
“Jake!” You clapped, coming around from the bar and hugging your big brother, he tried to remain calm when he saw how big your bump had gotten, nearly six months along, you were definitely showing. “Hey, Y/N.” Jake murmured, hugging you tightly, “I missed you, sis.” He chuckled, putting on his tough guy act but he was so protective over you, you two had it a little rough growing up and he was always there for you, he still was, just from a distance because of his career. “I missed you too, J.” You smiled, “so has this girl, I play your videos every night.” You added, rubbing your bump, he grinned proudly, “as you should, she needs to know who her uncle Jake is.” He declared, “now, you gonna get me a beer or do I have to complain about the service here.” He joked, making you tip your head back in laughter. “Penny wouldn’t be very happy about that.” You retorted, stepping back into your position behind the bar, snapping the top off the glass bottle before sliding it to your brother.
“Not afraid your navy buddies are gonna see you talking to me?” You teased as you popped over to him after serving some other customers, “nah, if they say anything they know I’ll screw with them.” He shrugged, earning an eye roll. “Don’t be a dick.” You muttered, making him choke on his beer. “You’re literally pregnant but I refuse to hear that word from your mouth, you're my baby sister.” He chuckled, “oh my god, don’t start, J.” You sighed, letting him think you were actually offended for a little bit before giggling and easing his nerves. He’d made the mistake of pushing you too far over FaceTime a couple weeks ago, it’s safe to say he found out how hormonal you really were.
“Bradshaw?” Jake called out, standing up from the bar stool, you glanced up, “well, damn man, what are you doing here?” This Bradshaw fellow spoke up, giving your brother a quick smirk, “I thought they only called the best back.” He added, you giggled under your breath, which didn’t go unnoticed by him. “Oh you’re so funny, chicken.” Your brother rolled his eyes, “Rooster.” The man corrected, you held back a small smile at that. “Can I get a bud light, please?” Rooster asked, sliding a five dollar bill across the counter. “Sure thing, pilot.” You quipped, he furrowed his brows, he wasn’t in uniform, he watched you huff and bend over to grab one from the cooler, your bump keeping you from being entirely flexible. “Rooster, that is my little sister, Y/N.” Jake announced when Rooster went to ask how you knew he was a pilot. “Sister?” He gasped, looking at Jake. “Let me guess, he’s never mentioned me.” You spoke up, the brunette nodding as he forced his eyes back to you.
“Well, nice to meet you and uh, congratulations.” Rooster said, waving towards your bump, “I’m not pregnant.” You deadpanned, making Rooster begin to panic while Jake got red in the face trying not to laugh. “Kidding.” You laughed, watching as he went blank and Jake howled out in a laugh. “Oh god man, you should’ve seen your face.” Jake mumbled as the two walked off to join the others, you shook your head with a smile, guys are too easy sometimes.
***
“Hey hun, I have someone coming to help you put up the delivery this morning! I don’t want you climbing up the ladder, he’ll be there at 7.”
You read the text from Penny as you worked in the office at the bar, the alcohol delivery just coming in now, they were loading the crates and crates of liquid into the back room while you worked on counting the drawers.
Time passed incredibly slow as you felt useless not being able to unload most of the order, but you were far too pregnant and wobbly to be lifting that much above your head on a ladder. “Hello?” You heard someone call out as you untapped another box. “In the back!” You responded, frowning at the broken bottle inside the packaging, “damn it.” You whispered, picking it up and going to chuck it into the trash can. “Oh, hi Rooster.” You smiled politely, instantly knowing Penny was playing matchmaker, you were smitten with him after that first meeting a month ago, and everybody but him seemed to know it. Even your brother was over the obvious looks you gave his co-worker, but he didn’t meddle, not wanting to get on your bad side before the baby came.
“Hi, Y/N, how are you?” Rooster spoke up, handing you a towel, seeing the way you were rubbing your hands on your pants after getting rid of the bottle. “Good, thanks for coming to help.” You answered him, “I’m sure Penny made it sound like I’m incapable because of the baby.” You added with a giggle, Rooster laughed softly, “that’s ok, I don’t mind. How is the pregnancy going?” He asked, gentlemanly, he had already begun placing bottles on the shelf where you had pointed him too. “Good, slow, I’m torn between wishing she was here already and being terrified for when she comes.” You answered truthfully, he shot you a smile, “a girl huh? I bet she’ll be as pretty as you.” He answered before going wide eyed, you did a double take when his words hit you. “Thanks.” You mumbled, smiling softly at him. “How is the training going?” You asked, breaking down the box after he finished emptying it, you two were working like a conveyor belt. “Good, I can’t really talk about it.” He shrugged, shooting you an apologetic look. “I figured.” You mumbled, holding in a grunt when you had a tight feeling in your stomach.
“Y/N?” Rooster questioned, turning to see you with your hands on your knees as you took a deep breath. “I’m ok, just Braxton hicks.” You waved him off, you had panicked and gone to the doctor over them last week and were now accustomed to it. “Oh, ok, are you sure?” He stepped closer to you, furrowing his brows, he wanted to help but he didn’t know how. “Promise.” You were back to your chipper self once it passed. Rooster went back to the order, and with you breaking down boxes, it was finished in record time.
“Jeez, mind if I steal you for every delivery day?” You joked as you looked over the fully stocked shelves, Rooster, who you had found out is legally named Bradley, laughed along with you. “I wouldn’t mind.” He answers truthfully, making you look away as you warmed under his gaze. “I hope this isn’t too forward, and I understand if you’re not ready to, but I’d like to take you out on a date sometime.” Bradley spoke up, he was walking alongside you through the dining room, you faltered in your stride. “I’d really like that, Bradley, but I’m nearly ready to pop, I can hardly bring myself to come to work, let alone go out for anything extra.” You explained, and it pained you, because you really wanted to go out with him, clearly he was genuine, who else would ask out a 7 month pregnant woman.
“That’s ok, whenever you’re ready, I’ll be waiting.” He smiled genuinely, “I’ll be completely honest with you, Jake told me to wait until after you had the baby to ask you out, but I just wanted you to know my intentions now.” He explained, shoving his hands in his pockets as you two reached the door, he was rocking on his heels. “Oh, Bradley.” You mumbled, “you talked to Jake about asking me out?” You questioned, nervously rubbing your bump. “Of course I did.” He answered easily, “wouldn’t want to start off on the wrong foot, you deserve better.” He added, frowning when you sniffled. “Sorry, sorry, it’s just the hormones.” You fanned your face, “how embarrassing.” You mumbled only intending for you to hear. “Not embarrassing, you’re growing a whole human, you’re allowed to be emotional.” Bradley declared, rushing over to grab a napkin for you to dab your face.
“Would you want to have dinner at my place? An easy date, maybe meet in the middle until the baby comes.” You offered, looking up at him hopefully. Bradley smiled brightly, “I’d love that, but you’re not cooking, either I cook or I bring takeout.” He leaned in and kissed your cheek, “I’ve got to get to base, but I’ll call you later so we can set a date.” He smiled, waiting until you agreed before he left.
***
You felt like a beached whale as you looked in the mirror, the maternity dress was comfy, and honestly a cute style, but you just felt huge, approaching the 8 month mark. You weren’t the skinniest before the pregnancy, and now it felt like it exaggerated everything you disliked.
Bradley rang the doorbell exactly five minutes before he was supposed to be here, which you relentlessly teased him for and he took every minute of it as he was so enthralled by watching how excited you were as you talked about your favorite show, that he agreed to watch. He could tell you felt guilty for putting it on, but he didn’t mind, he grabbed your hand as you two sat there in silence, jamming in as much conversation as possible during commercial breaks.
“Thank you, Bradley.” You mumbled as he slipped his shoes on, he looked up at you with a wide smile. “Thank you.” He repeated, “I’m very lucky to have gotten to spend the night with you, and I really hope we can do it again sometime.” He explained, sincerity dripping from his voice as he looked you in the eyes. “I’d love to hang out with you again.” You answered, maybe too quickly but it only widened his smile. “Great.” He mumbled, you felt bold and took the step closer to him, practically begging him to make a move. “Can I–“ “Yes.” You cut him off, giggling when he cupped your face, he kissed you gently, nothing too aggressive. You were like a puddle in his hands as he pulled away, “one more time.” You whispered, cracking one eye open to find him grinning at you, he kissed you again, feeling you smile against his lips.
***
“Jake, honestly, do you have to make it sound like I’m not capable of making my own decisions?” You sighed as your brother helped you, or really you watched him put together the dresser for the nursery, you sat in the rocking chair, rubbing your belly as the baby kicked hard. “I’m not saying that, Y/N. I just don’t want you to be hurt again, and especially the baby, you know you’d never forgive yourself if Rooster breaks her heart.” He explained, poking his tongue out in concentration as he tried to get the screw to line up properly. “I know, I promise I’m thinking about that, but he really cares about us. Honestly now, you know a guy wouldn’t shack up with a ready to give birth pregnant woman if he didn’t actually care about her.” You responded, getting up and going to hold the back piece still while he screwed it together. “That’s true.” He muttered, not wanting to admit you were right, you hummed, making him roll his eyes. “Face it, you can’t find a way to talk me out of this, because Bradley is a good guy and you just don’t want to admit that being with a pilot won’t hurt me.” You ranted, going back to the chair once he waved you off.
Jake sighed, putting the screwdriver down, he crossed his arms over his knees as he rested on them. “He is a good guy, don’t tell him I said that, I’m always going to worry about you. That’s something you need to come to terms with, and god forbid something happens to him like it did to his dad, I can’t watch you go through that.” Your brother trailed off, a distant look in his eyes simply at the thought. “What happened to his dad?” You questioned, Jake cursed under his breath. “He was Maverick’s RIO, he died during a training accident.” Jake whispered, you nodded slowly, processing this new information. “When was that? Do you know?” You murmured, “Bradley was only four or so.” Your brother spoke softly, seeing your eyes well up. “That’s horrible.” You sniffled, your mind wanted to go into a tailspin, but you refused to go there.
“Jake I appreciate your concern, but I’m not going to think like that, he makes me happy, that's what I’m going to focus on. He wants to be there for Eloise, that’s huge, I’m choosing to enjoy this time with him, hopefully for a very long time.” You explained, putting your foot down, Jake nodded, before he realized you said the baby’s name. “Eloise?” He gasped, “the name I suggested?!” He jumped up, cursing loudly when he hit his foot on the half assembled dresser. “Yes, the name you suggested, did you just break a toe?” You shrieked, looking at the crooked toe on his foot. “Well shit.” He muttered, following your gaze and grimacing at the sight, “Jake!” You shouted in disgust as he reached down and pushed it back in place. “I think we’re good.” He declared, “but I happen to think she’s going to be a perfect little Eloise.” He added, hugging you tightly. “Now, I think you owe me a pizza as payment while I finish building this damned dresser.” He muttered, dramatically sitting back down to continue building it.
You laughed at your brother's antics, but went and ordered a pizza for dinner, and thanked him up and down for all the help he had done during his rare weekend off.
***
Bradley was extremely concerned as you went silent after his words, not like you at all, you and Jake were similar in always having a remark to make. “A mission? In two days?” You whispered, feeling the tears spill over onto your cheeks, “it’s going to be ok, sweetheart.” He murmured, wiping away the tears as they continued to flow. “The team is great, we’ll be in and out, we’ll be back before you have the baby I bet.” He explained, cringing when you went wide eyed, “we?!” You shrieked, “Jake is going too?” You felt your heart drop, the two most important men in your life both going to risk their lives. You knew what they signed up for with the navy but the realization hit so much harder in your current state. “I thought he told you.” Bradley sounded deflated, he was just giving all the bad news it seemed. “Clearly he didn’t, Bradley!” You snapped, he didn’t take your words to heart as he knew you were hurting. “I’m sorry, Y/N.” He sighed, “just try and calm down baby, come here.” He tugged you closer, he had been coming over most days as you got closer and closer to your due date, he quickly found that you were very much a physical contact kind of person. He let you rest your head on his chest as he rubbed your arm, “it’s gonna be ok, you have to be positive, alright?” He explained gently, you nodded as you sniffled. “I don’t want to have this baby alone.” You admitted, “and you two, you mean so much to me, I-I don’t know what I’ll do if anything happens to either of you.” You voiced your fears, and he helped to ease them as best as he could, he vowed to stay with you until he had to leave, and he kept that promise, Jake coming over frequently too, wanting to get in as much time as possible.
***
You picked at your lips as the FaceTime call rang and rang, this was right around when the team was supposed to be back on land, so you hoped one of them would pick up. You tried Jake first, he was never too quick at answering so you weren’t too surprised when he never answered, you inhaled deeply before calling Bradley, “Y/N, baby I was just going to call you, we’re–“ Bradley stopped talking as he finally looked at his screen, you had the baby. “Holy shit.” He mumbled, “Jake!” He shouted through the crowd, he was in the shade now so he could see properly. “Oh my god, Y/N, she’s beautiful.” He gasped, “hi sweet baby.” He cooed as she suckled on air in her sleep. You flipped the camera to you, “I missed you so much.” You sighed, seeing the way his eyes lit up when he saw your face. You were gross and exhausted and desperately wanted a shower, but he still thought you were stunning, and the fact that you had a baby by yourself? He was most definitely falling for you.
“I missed you, oh my god, I can’t believe you had her.” He was stunned, completely caught off guard. “Wait– are you still in the hospital?” He yanked his sunglasses off, “yes, she’s only ten hours old.” You giggled, Jake finally running into view. “The baby! Let me see her!” He demanded, you flipped the camera to show Eloise swaddled and lying between your legs. “Oh my god.” Jake mumbled, “she’s beautiful!” He pinched his eyes, sighing as you put yourself back on the screen, “sis, you did it!” He cheered, before realizing he may have ruined a moment between you and Bradley. “Ok, ok, enough glaring, I’ll leave you two to talk, but you let me know as soon as I can come see that little nugget.” Jake demanded, giving you a quick love you, before walking off.
“Bradley, would you maybe want to come meet her later today? If you’re too tired it’s ok we can just–“ “You want me to be the first to meet her?” His voice cracked, and your heart swelled, “yes I do, babe.” You used a pet name for the first time and he was like a puddle. “I’m going to go home and shower, then I’ll be there as quick as I can, text me your room number.” You smiled at his eagerness, “be safe, Bradley.” You reminded him, cooing down to Eloise as she opened her eyes. “I will be.” He assured, hanging up once you two said your goodbyes.
It felt like forever but really it was less than two hours by the time Bradley was walking into the room with two bouquets of flowers. “Hi, sweetheart.” He grinned, approaching you quickly, he welcomed the desperate kiss you pulled him in for, thankful that Eloise had been in the rollaway crib beside your bed. “No injuries lieutenant?” You asked softly, eyeing him over, your fingers ran over his cheeks. You had missed the feeling of his warm skin, you missed him, everything about him. “Not a scratch on me, thanks to your brother, but that’s a story for another time.” He explained, he didn’t want to lie and say everything went perfect, it didn’t, but he was home and that’s what mattered right now. “Ok.” You whispered, just happy to have him here. “Flowers for mom, and flowers for baby.” He told you as he handed you a bouquet and laid the other one on the table. You smiled gratefully as you delicately touched the petals, “thank you, they’re beautiful.” You sighed, setting them down on the table, Bradley moving to take them so you didn’t have to move out of bed.
“I’m sure you want to hold her.” You whispered as he sat on the edge of your bed, looking at the swaddled baby, he had yet to know her name. “Go wash your hands.” You instructed, taking Eloise out of the crib, she had just eaten not too long before he got here so she should be content. You admired her little nose, and the puffy cheeks, she had some of your hair, but you were sure it would change many times in her first year of life. “Ok.” Bradley nervously sat in front of you, why he was nervous, he had no idea. He was good with kids, great even, but this was your baby, this was a baby that would hopefully look up to and love him. It was a lot of pressure. He took her with ease, “you wanna know her name?” You asked softly, sneakily snapping a picture as he looked down at the cradled baby in his arms, he was already completely and totally in love with her. And with you, but he needed to say that at the right time. Bradley nodded, barely being able to pull his eyes off of her, “Eloise Jake Seresin.” You whispered, a single tear falling from your eye.
“Oh,” he murmured, “it’s beautiful, hi Eloise.” He turned to her, brushing a thumb over her cheek, smiling when she contorted her face and then settled back peacefully. “Does Jake know?” Bradley asked you, now taking the time to admire you as you rested against the pillows, your eyes a little bloodshot from the lack of sleep, but you were beaming with pride for the little girl in his arms. “Not yet, I’ll ask him to come soon though. I want him to meet her before we get released tomorrow.” You explained, he nodded in understanding, there weren't many words to be said at this moment. You both simply marveled at the sleeping beauty before you, knowing that once your brother came, the peace would be slightly disrupted. But you didn’t mind, Jake was your family and you truly couldn’t wait to see him with Eloise.
“So hungry.” You cooed, holding Eloise while she suckled on her bottle, she was like a maniac if she dropped it for a moment, and surely she wasn’t happy when you stopped halfway through to burp her. Jake knocked softly on the door as the cries calmed down when the bottle was back in her mouth. “Come in.” Bradley spoke for you, Jake poked his head in, “Aw come on, I’m second?” Your brother sighed looking at you as he stepped inside. He placed a pink teddy bear down by the flowers, “what a charmer, Bradshaw.” Jake teased, pointing to the bouquets. “Oh hush and wash your hands if you want to hold your niece.” You demanded with a giggle, even the playful banter was not allowed at this moment, you wanted a simple happy moment as you told your brother her full name. Jake rushed over to the sink, maybe even quicker than Bradley had, and returned in a flash, hands dried and reaching for the baby. You handed her over and watched as he instantly became wrapped around her finger. “Her name,” you paused, waiting for Jake to look at you, he nodded for you to continue, looking over at you with curious eyes, “Eloise Jake Seresin.” You spoke softly. Jake let his jaw drop, “I-are you serious?” He questioned, you nodded as you relished in his emotional reaction. “Rooster, if you tell anyone you saw me cry, you’re a dead man.” He threatened as Bradley chuckled softly. He put his hands up, “I would never, come on, man.” He declared, smiling over at you. “God, Y/N, I can’t believe it.” Jake whispered, he sat beside you on the bed, still cradling the baby. “I’m proud of you, to know that? You’re so strong.” He explained, kissing your cheek. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you, knowing Eloise and I will always have you in our lives, I know we’ll be ok.” You never thought as a child that you and Jake would be close as adults, but the way life has panned out, you two became the best of friends and you were grateful for that.
Things would be so different without Jake, you wouldn’t have moved to North Beach, you wouldn’t have Eloise, you wouldn’t know Bradley. Sure, maybe it was an exaggeration, but Jake was the reason everything had fallen into place in the past year for you.
Bradley cleared his throat as he stood, “I’m going to go get something from the cafeteria, did you want anything?” He questioned, walking over to the bed, “chips if they have them, I feel like I need salt.” You giggled, Bradley smiled and nodded as he tucked hair behind your ear, then kissed your forehead. Jake watched the way you instantly relaxed and your eyes shut at the soft contact, “I’ll be back. Jake, you want anything?” He added as he started heading for the door. “No.” Your brother answered simply, looking down at the baby in thought, truth be told, he was thinking of how he felt relieved that you two had Bradley now. “You love him.” Jake declared, he was expecting you to be defensive, you two had only been “dating” for just over two months and you were a very guarded person. Maybe it was the pregnancy hormones that made you move so fast, but you were one hundred percent in love with Bradley Bradshaw. “I do love him.” You agreed, taking Eloise back.
“He loves you.” Jake whispered. “He looks at you the way dad looked at mom once upon a time.” He added when you looked over at him with furrowed brows.
Meanwhile, Bradley was pacing in an empty hallway, feeling a panic attack coming on as he realized the severity of this situation.
You, his girlfriend, just had a baby that wasn’t his. Yes he knew this was coming, but now that she was here, and he already loved her, and you for that matter. He was terrified of breaking your hearts, he saw how his mom was destroyed when his dad died, he knew how it felt to lose a dad. “Talk to me dad.” He whispered as he held his head in his hands, sinking into a chair. He closed his eyes and thought to his future, never in his life had he seen anything other than flying for the rest of his days, but now, he saw you and Eloise, hopefully even more kids. And a dog, definitely a dog.
Bradley snapped his head up when he heard Maverick’s voice, “Rooster, are you ok?” Mav asked, Bradley rubbed at his eyes, making sure he wasn’t hallucinating. “Mav? What are you doing here?” Bradley disregarded his question, tilting his head at Maverick. “Penny’s cousin fell down some steps, so we came to visit her.” Mav explained, “what are you doing here? And why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?” The older man sat beside his student, who was also like a son, it’s complicated. “Y/N had the baby, and I feel like I’m going to pass out because I’m so in love with her and I’m afraid I’m going to break her heart.” Bradley rambled, Maverick raised his eyebrows, nodding slowly. “How would you break her heart? I know damn well you would not leave her because she has a baby.” Maverick demanded, “no of course not! I mean, if something happens to me, and she’s left alone like mom.” Bradley trailed off.
Maverick stood up, grabbed Bradley by the shoulders, and looked into his eyes.
“You can’t think like that, all you can do is love her the same way your dad loved your mom. You take care of her, and that baby, you live the life you want with them, you’ll all be happy.”
Bradley absorbed the words that were spoken with force, nodding slowly. “I should head back.” He whispered, standing up with a new mindset, “but first I need to find some potato chips.” He muttered heading to the cafeteria for you, Maverick furrowed his eyebrows but let Bradley go on his own.
***
“I found–“ Bradley stopped as he noticed you finally sleeping peacefully, Eloise in her crib, Jake stood from the chair, motioning for Bradley to follow him into the hallway. “We need to talk.” Jake informed him, leaning against the wall, Bradley cleared his throat, nodding, it was time for them to have this conversation. “I think I can take a guess at why you look so nervous, I know you don’t want to hurt my sister. Or Eloise. She knows what happened to your dad, I told her.” Jake started off, “it’s not your choice to make if she should be in a relationship with someone who could die any day on the job. She knows the risks, she also knows the rewards, Rooster.” He crossed his arms as he watched the slightly taller man think over his words. “I love her, Hangman. I just don’t want her to regret being with me, what if in a year she thinks how much better she and Eloise would’ve been without me.” Bradley sighed, he wasn’t sure where this doubt was coming from, but he thought of his mom and how it was for her with men approaching her. She hated it. They always wanted to change the way she patented Bradley, and he didn’t want to make you feel that way.
“My sister doesn’t just rush into things, she clearly loves you– but you didn’t hear that from me. She never regrets anything, she says everything happens for a reason, and quite honestly, I don’t think she’d be as happy as she is now if she hadn’t met you. It pains me to say this, but she wants you to be in Eloise’s life for the long haul, to be that father figure she needs. Y/N also wants you for herself, but she’s putting her daughter first like any mother would, so you need to reassure her that you’re going to be there for both of them as long as they’ll have you.”
Jake was even surprised by his own words, not thinking he was that knowledgeable. “Basically, you need to go in there, give her those potato chips and tell her you love her and you want to be whatever she wants you to be. And if you aren’t ready to be that, then you need to leave now before she falls for you anymore.” Your brother was strict with his words, it wasn’t a black and white situation, there was a lot of grey area, but that would be explored once Rooster made a decision, and Jake was prepared to pick up the pieces if he left you heartbroken, just like your father had done to you two and your mom. “Tell her I’ll come over to the house when she gets home tomorrow.” Jake turned and left, leaving a very rarely speechless Bradley there to mull over the words.
It was a simple decision, Bradley turned on his heels and walked right into that hospital room, waiting for almost an hour until you woke up.
“I got your chips.” He whispered when you opened your eyes, you smiled in your sleepy haze, instantly turning to check on Eloise, she was awake surprisingly, staring at the ceiling as she wiggled in her swaddle. “Thank you.” You spoke up, taking Eloise and laying her on the bed in front of you, she shot her arms up and scrunched her face when you undid the swaddle, her body only covered in a diaper and a bow hat. “Y/N, I need to tell you something.” Bradley walked over to the bed, carefully sitting beside you, “what is it, honey?” You questioned, not registering the severity of his words. His heart skipped a beat, honey, that’s what his parents always used and he’d yet to meet a girl who liked that term of endearment. This solidified everything for him, he asked his dad to talk to him, and he was convinced that was a sign straight from Goose. “I love you.” He declared, watching you shoot your head up, “you do?” You sounded giddy, like a little girl. “Yes, so much, and Eloise too.” His words were everything you needed to hear.
“I love you too, Bradley.”
***Epilogue***
“Happy birthday, daddy!” Eloise shrieked, jumping on the bed, you filmed it on your phone trying not to giggle over her rambling as Bradley groaned at the early wake up call. He had just gotten in last night after a two week detachment in Europe. “I missed you!” Eloise giggled, sitting beside his chest as he quickly pinned her and tickled her stomach. “I missed you, princess.” Bradley said in between his tickle attack, her shrieks of joy were music to his ears. The three year old, almost four, was squirming and giggling as he finally slowed down, “good morning, mama.” He saw you filming, he reached for the phone, turning it to point at you, “look at that bump. Maybe I’ll have a birthday twin!” Bradley spoke up, laughing heartily when you posed with your hands cradling your 9 month belly. Eloise stuck her face in front of the camera sticking her tongue out, “you goober.” He teased before ending the recording.
“Daddy, it’s your birthday! You pick breakfast.” She declared, happily snuggling into him once he sat up against the headboard, he waved you over, smiling as you tucked yourself under his shoulder, pressing a kiss to Eloise’s head. “Hmm, I think we can make some pancakes.” Those were Eloise’s favorite, and his too if he’s being honest, she nodded furiously. “Alright, you go out there, I’ll be right out.” He chuckled, kissing her forehead before she bolted out of the room. “Happy birthday, Roo.” You whispered, kissing him slowly, he smiled against your lips, “happy birthday indeed.” He murmured, fingers splayed across your stomach as Eloise called for you both from the kitchen.
He was the happiest he’d ever been with you two, and now with a little boy on the way. He had definitely made the right decision all those years ago, there was no question about it.
Hellaverse OC
_Name: Camellia Mayday
_Age: 20+
_Nicknames: Cami,Lia, Little Flower,Melia
_Race: Succubus,Imp (a little bit)
_Occupation: Singer
_Appearance:
She has Verosika's palette but reverse,she has pink hair and white skin,yellow eyes,a tail with a heart shaped tip which is black,the rest of the tail is dotted with little deep magenta colored hearts
Her lips is usually painted red, without lipstick it has a pinkish hue. She has pretty long black horns and black medium sized bat-like wings with a dark magenta inner layers
_Personality:
She's usually serious and fearsome,she doesn't take any bullshit, which makes one feels like she's cold and ruthless. She'll leave if it is a waste of her time, she's bold and mean,not hesitant to say what she thinks even to a higher ranked demon like Ozzie
"This is rather ridiculous,Ozzie"
"But it's a circus,Cami (◍•ᴗ•◍)"
"Yeah and you're a thousand years old rooster"
Camellia has a habit of giving names to certain beings,like with Ozzie, she calls him "Rooster" sometimes,she calls Fizzarolli "Clown". That's her love language
Camellia can be unapproachable,with how she was in the past,she can get rather defensive and seclusive towards others,she does have major trust and attachment issues
_History:
Camellia was born in the Envy Ring and lived there her entire childhood
She was born into quite the rich household, she never felt loved growing up. Her mother despises her existence since shortly after she was born,her father left her mother. She lived comfortable as a child,but she never got the emotional care,her mother didn't even bat an eye at her and just focus on her work. Their relationship is strained at this point
The one who truly raised her was her stepfather,the husband her mother remarried after the other family relatives recommended him
Her stepfather at least cared for her when she was growing up so she liked him more than her mother. He taught her a few things to survive in Hell like combats,he owns several casinos in different rings
Camellia knew Verosika since they were kids as they are distant cousins
She studied at a private highschool in the Sloth Ring before at the age of 16. It was a rather fun time cause she got to be away from her mother,she was even in the student council
She had few boyfriends as a teenager but they were just cheap thrills for her
After graduation,she decided to be independent from her family, her mother was such a bitch about it, nagging her about marriage,stepdad was supportive though
As an adult,she met Valentino,they dated for a long time,it was her first serious relationship, she did love him. She was a singer working at his nightclub at the time. It's why she lived in the Pride Ring for a few years
But Valentino wasn't actually the best boyfriend ever and he was terrible so they broke up,more like she left him. Because of a heartbreak and having endured an abusive relationship,she became quite bitter
Let's just say a certain encounter with Asmodeus presented her with a better life,he offered her a place in Ozzie's and she took it,she was tired with how Valentino didn't appreciate her talent. Even if it was a poisonous dagger that can kill her,she would take it
She moved to the Lust Ring and now she lives there while working in Ozzie's
She rose to great fame and fortune as the best singer in Ozzie's. She likes working for Ozzie, he's a better boss than Valentino
_Relationships:
Verosika Mayday: They're distant cousins,they have a good relationship, before meeting Valentino,she lives together with Verosika for a period of time
Valentino: He was her former boss and ex-lover, she did love him truly but he treated her badly so she left him. He made her gave up on love. Times and times again,he tried to get her back with gifts after realising how famous she became working for Ozzie's. She burned all that he sent her,she hates him
Ozzie/Asmodeus: Her current boss, he's a great boss, after getting a private performance from her,he offered her a place at Ozzie's and gave her his business card,knowing that she can shine brighter in his hands. She did become better at Ozzie's since he made her into a big star
Fizzarolli: She finds him stupid and annoying,but cute. He makes her laugh. She has tons of Fizz plushies,big and small,in her room. She finds herself loving the Fizz plushies way too much,she doesn't do anything sexual with those I assure you
Striker: She used to date him,he was a little better than Valentino per say,they broke up when he found out about her origin and status. She hated how he gave her so much shit about her rich parents and association with Asmodeus. Apparently he doesn't like a rich girl
_Trivia:
-Don't call her Melia, she hates it. Valentino used to call her that as a pet name. She would murder anyone who call her that
-She hates Valentine Day,the name sounds so much like Valentino
-She loves alcohols and has a habit of smoking,her favourite alcohol is light coloured wines, specifically the rose and apple wines
-She adores plushies and has a good soft spot for them. Mainly because they comfort her as a child,having received zero mother love,the plushies made her less sad,her mother gave her plushies to compensate for the lack of affection
-When she's feeling terrible mentally, she hugs the Fizz plushies
-She's friends with Velvet cause they're both plushies lovers
-Sometimes she and Verosika get together and talk about their terrible exes
-Her bloodline got imps married into the family before so technically she does have imp blood,but she leans more on the succubus side of the genetics
-She designs some Fizz merchs sometimes too and Ozzie came to her for design consultation,she studied Design once
-Fizz loves her Halloween Fizz plushie design,it is fabulous and cute
-She goes shopping with Ozzie sometimes,they even goes Fizz plushies shopping once
Lucky Penny - Chapter Fifteen
A/N: Y'all better schedule a dentist appointment for this chapter. It's so sweet and fluffy.
One Month Later:
Healing.
The last month had been full of healing.
Lucky had been completed her physical therapy, and came off of neurological watch. She was healing physically and mentally at a very successful rate.
But her body wasn't the only thing healing, while their relationship wasn't bad by any means, her mom and her definitely had their issues. They were too alike and both were far too stubborn to back down in a fight.
Mickey had the idea of doing a small garden in the backyard, kind of like the one that was in the backyard of Baylie's childhood home. He showed up one day with Delilah in the passenger seat and all the gardening essentials in the back.
He watched as the two women worked in tandem, planting the colorful flowers that he didn't know the names of. It made him smile to watch as they laughed together.
Her mom saw how important flying was to her daughter. Knew now why she chased the skies, to be closer to William. It almost comforted Delilah to know that even in death he was still looking out for their little girl.
And Baylie had always understood her mother's hesitancy to accept her career path, but a near death experience made her understand it on a much deeper level. She had left so soon after William had passed so tragically, and her mother had to pick up the pieces all alone. She could never truly make up for that time, but she'd do her best now.
After all the flowers were planted, her mother ran to do a quick errand. When she returned she had a few solar lights for the garden to light it up at night. But she also gave them a "DIY Stepping Stone" kit for them to put their handprints in the garden.
That night as the garden began to glow with the color changing lights, Mickey held Baylie close, feeling the happiness radiate off of her once more.
-----
Admiral Kazansky had been a surprising help in her recovery as well. He had been there for Maverick through the death of Goose. He had seen the look of pure despair in his friend's face that he now saw in the young pilot's. He had offered her to come over to his house and into his office. His wife always had fresh cookies or brownies, and made a great cup of tea. He allowed her to just talk about anything and everything. Unlike the Navy issued shrink she had been seeing since the mission who asked her dumb questions and made her feel like she couldn't really talk about anything.
She grew to love the warmth the office had, the smell of old leather and whiskey comforted her.
He reminded her alot of William when she really thought about it and she told him once all about the man who had raised her. Ice had listened to all the stories of her stepdad with a smile on his face. It reminded him of when his own kids had been younger, and how grateful he was to still be there for them. It also broke his heart that Lucky didn't get a long time with the man who clearly had loved her with all his heart.
He ended every visit with a bear hug, where he let her decide when the hug was over.
She liked to think that William wasn't jealous of the Iceman walking in to the hole in her heart that he had left.
-----
Another thing that had changed in the past month, was the relationship with Fanboy. There wasn't the threat of a deployment tearing them apart again. They could spend all the time in the world together.
They went on date nights, and tried new things. Roller skating had been the best, Mickey wasn't too bad at it, but Baylie had skated circles around him. A talent he had no idea she had. They tried new restaurants, always trying bites of each others entrées, and dessert was a must.
The two almost always ended up at the Hard Deck, dancing to the jukebox (or Rooster playing the piano) and being totally oblivious to the fact that everyone who knew the couple were staring at them, totally in awe of their love.
Lucky had also finally told Fanboy about the child she had lost. He hadn't been upset that she never told him. He was just upset that she had been hurting and he had no idea. Of course he was sad that they could have a little one running around by now, but he would rather have her be okay. They could try for a baby whenever they wanted to and they had decided that maybe they wanted to.
The two had always been madly in love, but this had strengthened that love and they couldn't imagine being with anyone else at this point in their lives. It was the two of them against the world.
-----
Lastly, while she wasn't yet cleared to fly herself, they hadn't said she couldn't backseat in a plane.
She went up with Coyote as her pilot, as he had already been cleared to fly. The rest of the Squad, including Maverick, had gone up too. It was like music to their ears as Lucky talked to them over the comms.
"Lucky?" Coyote asked, pulling her mind from out of the clouds.
"What's up Coyote?"
"I'm glad you went back for me."
She smiled.
"I'm glad I went back too."
-----
Her healing may be far from over, but she'd get there. She had the best support system a girl could ask for. Both here on Earth and up above the clouds.
-----
A/N: SEE I can write fluff, and it's gonna get even fluffier. Wedding planning is next ;)
My mom and My step-dad were both like no he isn't cute at all and My stepdad was like really you two (my sister) think he is attractive? And like I think my parents might actually be blind. My mom says Miles Teller is okay but not with the Rooster mustache
My mom does agree that Glen Powell is hot but I am more of a Miles girlie there is just something about him. I think I might be the only person in my family with ~taste~
I’m so deeply shaken up by this message. Like…are they okay? I’m genuinely concerned.
I MEAN…
Tumblr media
Coming from someone who isn’t even a fan of mustaches, the Rooster stache is truly one of the hottest things I’ve ever seen.
Cheers to you, girlie, because you are the only one in your family with taste!
Can I request something oddly specific just to blow off some steam? Rooster overhearing your stepfamily talk badly about you and defending you/calling them out in front of everyone. Doesn’t need to be a whole fic, but happy days if it is. -
I just found out my stepdad actually hated me this whole time and it’s actually kind of heartbreaking. If you can’t or don’t want to write it I understand. I’m just having a hard day and I need some justice.
Oh my gosh I am so sorry. I get that families can be so cruel. If you ever need to talk let me know.
To Be Loved
It took me a while to figure out how to make it specific, but not too specific so it may not be my best writing, but I do hope that Bradley and DadMav can bring you some comfort.
