I'm trying to find a fic I read years ago - probably a decade or more tbh - which was definitely a classic in fandom at the time and I feel like the author was well-known too. AO3 searches aren't working so let's see if this jogs anyone's memory:

J2, younger Jared, Misha runs a speakeasy, Jensen is a rumrunner, Jared is a newsie who works for Misha now, mostly top!Jensen but there is switching eventually as Jensen's 'I must be this person only' walls begin to break down. I remember particularly well a scene with Jared adoring/admiring/stroking Jensen's naked back (never having thought that would be something he'd be attracted to before), and a line from Jensen's POV on their first time with penetrative sex where he considers whether to suck Jared off to 'take the edge off' but then deciding no, he wants him to 'come on his cock with all his edges intact'.

i'm not gonna delve into the tendency of fandom to ignore platonic relationships and aspec headcanons - but that part is unequivocally true. nor am i gonna talk in depth about acephobia and arophobia because that's too giant a topic for a little spn blog like me - but that is also unequivocally a thing. i'm just gonna talk about wincest.

i have a weird relationship with wincest. i swing from liking it, to being ambivalent about it, to straight up despising it, and back again. overall, i’d say that it is a ship which exists. i lean more towards liking it, because i just love sam and dean together so much, but i’m afraid i simply find it inferior to platonic samdean - which should be a widely used term, btw. please start using samdean platonically, too; all samdean enjoyers should form a coalition! that said, the honest majority of fics i read these days to get my samdean fix are wincest, since there are far fewer genfics than slash fics, and not many of these genfics are unhinged to my liking. i either pretend it’s platonic or, if that’s not really possible, just enjoy it as it is. so, i’m supremely grateful to wincest content creators <3 you are the loves of my life i am giving you all a big warm hug right now

i can see why people would ship wincest, on multiple levels. sam and dean are just an amazing pairing, in whatever form that takes; j2 are very hot guys; the show really doesn’t hold back on the incest subtext, and i don’t blame people for wanting to explore it in fanon. again, it’s just a ship that exists to me, and whose content creators i appreciate. probably my biggest gripe with it is the way an unfortunate amount of ‘wincest moments’ and analysis hinge on amanonormativity. i can generally just ignore the copious amounts of romantic moments and banging when reading one of the aforementioned wincest fics, but when i read something like, “Obviously there’s something more going on; no one can love their brother that much without wanting to kiss and fuck him!” i just… have to take a breather. i hate it so much. please, please do some research into amanonormativity. i do not blame you at all for shipping wincest, but if your reasoning is “they’re closer than most siblings” then i do blame you, i’m afraid. yes, they are extremely, undeniably weird, and closer than most siblings. does this mean they are/want to be romantically or sexually involved? no. i’m going to quote @brotherwives in saying, “I’d say that it actually cheapens the intensity of their bond,” because they’re just so right. i’m sure people have their reasons for shipping it, though, and i respect that; please keep the unhinged content coming, i love you. and i get that a lot of wincest shippers appreciate gencest, as well...

i just. hearing that some ppl - including wincest shippers - are weird about gencest is mind-blowing to me. i invite more people to enjoy the insanity of gencest, bc in my opinion it's just so damn great. brothers being insane about each other not in a "normal" brotherly way but also not in an incestuous sense?? they straddle the line between two things by just being unapologetically insane about each other?? a serve. THE serve. not to mention weirdcest - platonic kink, whatever form it takes - is so much fun!! like they know they're not "normal" but they aren't into each other, either?? and there's no textbook guide on how the hell they're supposed to act under these circumstances?? like "incest is wrong" is pretty much universally accepted, but what about platonically biting your brother's neck to stake a claim on him bc you can't stand the thought of anyone else ever taking him away from you, whether that be a romantic partner or a friend or the devil himself. you can still have that incest guilt without it actually being incest, you can still delve into the horrific familial enmeshment. imho it's literally the best possible thing.

i'm not aspec, btw, and i'm not trying to hail myself as the ally of all time by mentioning that lmaoo. i'm just saying. it's completely possible to enjoy platonic relationships and enjoy aspec headcanons (*cough* aro dean!!! *cough*) whether you're aspec or not. platonic relationships aren't appreciated enough, when, in my opinion, they're actually more interesting... romance is generally clear-cut, but that area where the lines of "friends" blur?? trying to navigate the fact that you care more about your friend or sibling or whoever than your romantic partner, and it will probably always be that way?? venturing into queerplatonic relationship territory without knowing what the hell that is or how to explain it, just knowing that you will gladly throw every convention off a steep cliff to live with your platonic life partner(s)?? yes.

in case this wasn't clear: i do NOT hate wincesties in any way, you guys are like my siblings. yeah, maybe we squabble and disagree on stuff, but at the end of the day we are different iterations of the same genes and i love you all <3 (please no one make any dumb incest jokes about that analogy) like i said, we should form a coalition and take back the spn fandom

Different anon here, and I just wanted to say I completely get associating a piece of media with a strange time in your life. I haven't done that with spn but i have with so many other shows i love! However, if you end up rewatching, i would love to read/hear your thoughts/impressions as you go. And I also wanted to say...you're taking part in big bang this year??? I'm so happyy!!!!!!!!

Folks voted for a new fic called Rest & Restore, where we have Romance Writer!Jared and Contractor!Jensen getting together to restore a home. I'm going to model it off of the book "Jewels" by Danielle Steel. Except... there won't be any Nazis.

This is almost certainly a sign I need to go to bed instead of whining on Tumblr. What's that saying about not listening to your brain after a certain point in the evening? But whining is what Tumblr is for, right? I'll probably delete it in the morning while feeling embarrassed.

I'm thinking about my weekly rec posts.

This is something I've done for literally years. It's started way back in my early days of the Supernatural fandom where an LJ friend (RIP Donna) and I decided to read all the SPN J2 Big Bang fics and post weekly recs of our favourites.

I just stuck with it from there and branched out to include any fic in any fandom that I enjoyed, and I never really thought about it much beyond me sharing fics I liked until today.

There's a DMBJ comm on DW that has started doing weekly recs with different themes and tonight I had a poke around. I agreed with just about everything that was recced but, not going to lie, not seeing anything of mine listed even in the themes that are common in my fics stung a bit.

Now this isn't a 'Hils guilts people into reccing her fics' post. I am well aware of the limitations of my own writing and, in all honesty, once I've posted them I tend to forget about them myself too. So I certainly don't expect other people to remember them when it comes to reccing. The pleasure, for me, is the writing of the story. It's a nice way for me to lose myself in something I'm creating for 20 mins when I do a sprint after I get home from work.

But this got me thinking. While it's fun for me to share fics I've enjoyed, in a small fandom like DMBJ am I upsetting people by not including them? The last thing I want to do is make anyone feel sad, or bad about their writing.

I don't know it's something for me to ponder, I guess.

Currently witnessing it as the CW base on stan twitter reveals how mixed up they really are because while it's the shows people really care about, at some point fans kinda lost sight of that and believe a corporate network platform is their friend. I'm speaking as someone who was a fan of the whole Arrowverse for years and gave up. Or ask me sometime how I went over the moon supporting The 100 and then quit because of how that started downspiraling.

And am currently loving the new wave of CW series I decided to give targeted support to. I think there is noticeable improvement. And a notably lack of tire fires. I get it, when a platform gives you many shows you like, you tend to admire the platform, and that's ok. But when it hits the point of evangelizing the platform and making that their fandom identity to the the point where they lose sight of the fact that it's the shows. It's about the shows. The characters, the stories, the creatives, the crew, the actors who make the stories.

Yes sometimes creatives screw up too, but as someone who's been watching the slowmo trainwreck of an implosion of CW over many years, as a fan of shows on that platform, when there's that many problems, all at the same problem, that is systemic.

A network's just a delivery system.

Mark Pedowitz is not your friend. And now, he's out too, as I kinda thought might happen given all the other changes.

A reminder about Mr. Pedowitz, while he is being lionized in media posts, and the brosonlies of spn standom stick him on a pedestal, and confused CW stans seem to think he's a hero: On his watch, at first CW rose. Then it started to crumble. On his watch, the big money netflix deal fell apart. To be fair, that was due to the CBS half of CW that had to have its tanking shows renewed no matter what and that rolled to netflix along with everything else and didn't do well and netflix got tired of that. But Pedowitz getting that netflix deal into place does not counter the downsides. On his watch, ratings starting tanking downward, and while some of that was overall tv industry, ratings scale altering drastically, on the big broadcast networks too. But CW ratings were noticeably circling the drain, across shows. On Pedowitz's watch, multiple massive tire fires harming multiple series across multiple IP's. Multiple large fanbases hurt. Some real attempts at increased diversity undermined by harm. By tokenism, by lack of intersectionality, by mentalities that said here you have this character and that character, that's enough, by mismanagement. It was like nobody in the highest positions of power actually cared.

People keep throwing around CW's diversity stats like that somehow undoes the trash fire harms. Hey you can count, good for you. Did you actually sit down and think about the bad messaging across multiple series? The sidelining? The way some shows were treated? The CW mess, which had bothered me for a long time, finally got so bad I snapped and participated in a boycott for a whole year, as an objection to the systemic mess and the harm it was doing. I stuck with it. Unlike some people who keep banging hate pots and pans and grudgewanking, I'm not a fake woke performative mess. The reason I ended boycott was announcement of the CW sale and I was noticing some changes in content that appealed to me. I chose a few shows to give targeted support towards. No it wasn't about my ship. No it wasn't about my favorite actors.

As for the spn base, a reminder why brosonlies evangelize Pedowitz: "the franchise is only j2," "there's no characters worth developing for a spinoff," "spn will continue so long as Jared and Jensen are willing" as his sole and only comment on the whole thing. Pedowitz's public persona helped propped up and empower the anti-diversity stans of spn standom for years. And J2 were just money signs. It's his job as CEO to see the money signs, what I object to is acting like he's such a good fan of the show and loves it so much when he displayed no appreciation for it overall, showed no signs he cared about that world or characters outside of two brothers in an Impala. I resented how he didn't appear to actually care about the show overall. And the CW's biggest longest flagship series was choked and throttled from being allowed to become more inclusive. Which is on more than one company and higher up but stop acting like Pedowitz wasn't helping to choke it. Jensen and CMP have already pulled the SPN universe beyond the limits placed on it previously. We are entering a broader, more inclusive, new era of SPN

There's also other industry changes happening that undoes some of the damage done back at the original point of the WB-UPN merger when a lot of black targeted programming got tossed aside. You can read @ghost-of-bobby if you're curious about a more informed view of what's up with Atlanta and how that will cause some needed change. Or look up what's going on with Assembly Atlanta, a new $140 million dollar studio complex owned by Gray Television, which is bigger than Nexstar, and heavily serves the south. And CW is going to change. It's not going to be like it was, in 2012, or 2014, or 2018. That doesn't mean all the shows you love currently are vanishing or they won't make new shows. They've already bought a couple of promising sounding series to develop, designed to be diverse.

Change can be good, change can be bad, but things are adding up in a way that points towards some much needed shaking up, more than towards anything bad. Unless of course, you're anti-diversity and want everything to pretend it's still the year 2007. Then it's bad news.
