But oh, am I truly polyam; every time I see a new side to this purple goofball, this chaotic mess, I adore him. Every part that refracts the light- that devours it- I am entranced all over again.
How wonderful it is! To love someone so much that they can be- in so many ways- 3 different people. To meet them all, carefully, reading each line of their heart; wounds and all.

You’re so right !!! I think he’s so used to seeing relationships in magazines and on tv, this fantastical romantic performance of falling in love and chasing and yearning; that he doesn’t see what’s exactly in front of him. And that’s on him being kinda dumb. Aki sees it instantly; the way you talk more animatedly, seeing them all more, always looking for Denji when you enter a room, searching for his praise and assurance and opinions, subtly fluttering your lashes and pressing yourself against him, asking if you looked pretty and getting a “yeah sure princess” in return.
God does it make your tummy tighten when he calls you that.
He’s so oblivious sometimes, but with very specific things. Denji knows when an advance is being made, he’s hot and cute and of course people have made passes at him so when you touch his thigh or measure your hand against his; he knows you’re sweet on him instantly. He’s all about touching you, getting touched in return so when it comes to the sweet talk and flirtations you shakily send to him; Denji balks and freezes up. He knows something’s up, that you’re trying something with him but he’s nervous and a little unsure with your compliments and adoring questions. He’ll answer you sure, asking for a twirl if you’re wearing something cute or agreeing that those two sweet old seagulls are the two of you but it’s with sweaty palms and a furrowed brow.
It takes a stern talking to from Aki and several yen bills shoved into his pockets to make him snap out of whatever funk he’s in, stringin’ you along like that without even askin’ you out.
Denji is so desperate for you, all lopsided smiles and shrugged shoulder but he’s also so goddamn sweaty. He wants to kiss the back of your hand like the good guys in movies do but he’s kinda sticky and he’s to embarrassed to rub his palms on his jeans - so you do it to him instead, bowing politely and kissing the back of his knuckles softly, lips pillowy and all he’s ever dreamed,
“Did Aki also tell you to ask me out? Cause that’s so cliche of him,” you giggle and sigh in some kind of defeat, looking down at your feet, “I didn’t think you’d catch on, thought I might’ve been too shy yknow? My sister always told me I had to be more confident if I wanted a boyfriend,”
Denji fizzes at the word. Boyfriend. His ears twitch and he puffs out a nervous laugh,
“S’cute that you’re shy,” he fishes something out of his pocket, a paper bag filled with three red bean taiyaki, kind of squashed but still warm from the street vendor, “I was kinda stupid about it to be honest, m’not used to the attention like that - the cute shy kind,”
You inch closer and cup his hands around the bag, visibly flustered but braving the intimacy. Your fingers brush his as you open the crinkled paper, pulling out the fish-shaped pastry and Denji swallows so thickly, he’s scared you heard,
“So?” You tear the fish in half and simmer at the steam hissing off the crimson filling. Denji blinks stupidly when you hand him the tail,
“Uhh, so what? Did you want the tail instead?”
Somewhere in a kitchen, Aki sneezes and curses his roommate.
“So d’you wanna be my boyfriend?” You nibble on the flaky pastry, humming at the sweet taste and Denji wishes he was the cause of your pretty noise. Your question sends him sagging with a weird kind of relief, glad you asked him instead of the other way around because he’s sure he would have probably either sounded too nonchalant or thrown up with anxiety over his wording of it,
“Only if you wanna be my girlfriend,” your cheeks heat up and Denji smiles brightly, shoulders hunching in an effort to get closer to you, biting into the cake with a noise of appreciation,
“I asked first you dummy, that’s not how you’re suppose to - you’re so silly sometimes Denji,”
He’s spooked. Eyes wide when you surge forwards, crushing the bag of snacks to his chest and leaning up into his personal space. Out of instinct, Denji leans away from you but you’re instant, eyes closed and lips parted.
You kiss him. Chaste and warm, nose bumping his and he nearly rips the bag he’s still holding, annoyingly. It takes him a second to respond, shocked at your boldness considering your previously shy nature but he responds either way. Denji cranes his neck down, forcing you backwards a little and you squeak at his reciprocation, mouth open and teeth nipping your lip. He can taste the taiyaki on your breath and you clutch at his wrists sandwiched between your chests with a sweet little sigh. The two of you part after a moment, his cheeks dark with flush and it feels like you’re shaking,
“You’re still silly,” you mumble and he lets out a heavy breath,
“M’your silly now,”
“That doesn’t even make sense oh my god,”

A smooth morning rolls out. Aki makes you and him some good coffee, slowly and meticulously as he always does it.
He finds you're behaving especially dreamy this morning; it makes leaving for work so much harder for him.
Aki carries out his morning routine with purposeful slowness, adoring how you follow at his side through each step. It's the small things that make him fall more and more in love with you, like the hypocritical scolding you give him about smoking and then proceeding to take a puff on his cigarette on the balcony. Or helping him tie his tie even though he can certainly do it himself. He just enjoys the small act of bending his knees to compensate for the height gap between you and him, being the 6'2 gangling giant he is.
He's the most talkative in the mornings, despite the rasp disturbing his throat. He tells you about his weird fucking dreams and feels fluttery that you bother to listen. You swarm him with affection and kisses from the bedroom to the door as he tries to leave for work. His natural nonchalant demeanor betrays his true inner feelings, he's really relishing your attention.
You overwhelm his face with kisses and he happily accepts, closing his eyes to fully lose himself in the sensation of your lips pressing to his skin.
"I really have to go..." he says but you cut him off with a kiss.
"... I'm gonna miss the train." he holds back a smile as you cut him off yet again.
He attempts to leave, the door is open and the roar of morning traffic carries in the entering breeze.
"Wait a moment!" you pout.
You grab his tie to pull him into a hard cheek kiss, and it makes his stomach flip, to feel the press of your lips connect with his jaw and slowly upwards, as if you're printing your love on his face one kiss at a time.
It always happens like this; you pull him by the tie just as he opens the door to really leave, then he stays right there, motionless from how love struck your kisses have him. Truly a dazed man. And it's always the final cheek kiss that sets him off, he bows his head to give you those hard and passionate kisses that are his thing... no one can kiss quite like how an Aki in love does.
Kissing him off to work in the genkan chews fifteen more minutes off the morning hour, but it's worth it... he now heads down the street in the sunlight with a dreamy look on his face like he's just been pampered by a goddess.

2023 BL/GL/QL Round-Up Post
I thought for posterity I'd post a reflection on everything I watched that completed in 2023. For me, that means anything that started in 2022 but the last episode was in 2023 is on this list, but anything that will still be airing after 31 December 2023 11:59 my time (EST) is not on this list, even if the bulk of the show did air in 2023.
A few stats:
110 discrete pieces of content (series/films)
clocking in at est. 600 hours of NEW BL/GL content only
from 9 different countries (Cambodia [1], Philippines [3], Hong Kong [1], Japan [18], Korea [19], Myanmar [1], Taiwan [6], Thailand [56], Vietnam [7])
~50% of the content I watched on this list is from Thailand
~85% of my content was on YouTube [40%], GaGaOoLaLa [23%] and iQIYI [21%].
[Note that this year a lot of older GMMTV shows moved off of YouTube and onto Viki so if you're looking at these stats to decide what to pay for, this won't account for that.]

Sadly, of the GLs that aired this year, I wouldn't recommend any of them. The best one was Show Me Love, which was not actually good but had very gorgeous women and a LOT of flirting.
The other huge thing that happened this year was that I stopped lurking! Thanks specifically to @lurkingshan and @bengiyo demanding everyone start talking about La Pluie, because they got me to post my first meta post. And because I started actually talking to people, I started making actual friends, and participated in organizing things like the Be My Favorite clown checkpoint for ep 11. I also disappeared a month because of life, and am still catching up on everything I intended to write this year. But it's been really rewarding finding this corner of tumblr with likeminded people who like good shows, like to think about these shows, and who are interested in talking about them in a way that's insightful and respectful.

My thoughts on Shinjiro and the changes made in P3P
I wrote this analysis to post on reddit, where I feel like the sentiment towards the changes made to Shinjiro's arc in Persona 3 Portable are more negative. But I thought it was worth posting here as well.
Long post under the cut:
(Major spoilers for Persona 3 up to October 4th.)
The changes that Persona 3 Portable made to Shinjiro and Akihiko’s arcs by allowing you to save Shinjiro from death are understandably controversial. I completely get why people don’t like that change, and think it cheapens the game’s messages of death or ruins Akihiko’s arc. However, I’d like to explain why I think it makes the story work better in other ways.
Persona 3 deals with the acceptance of our inevitable deaths, of course, but the enjoyment of the lives we have is a key part of this. The game tries to depict the dangers of not just accepting, but almost worshipping death through the Nyx cultists that show up later through the game.
Shinjiro’s outlook on life is not as extreme as these characters, but can still be compared to them. I think that he can be best compared to Chidori: both live their lives with the overwhelming knowledge of their imminent deaths, avoiding connection with others because of it. They’ve basically both resigned themselves to living as if they are already dead, with Chidori following Takaya’s orders and not ever considering another way of living; and Shinji not acting or helping SEES until his past regrets are staring him directly in the face, making him feel like there’s absolutely no other choice.
But while Chidori connects with Junpei and manages to feel the joy she’d pushed away, even if it’s only in the last few moments of her life, Shinjiro just… dies. He doesn’t have a moment where his views are questioned or challenged. He doesn’t grow past his passivly-suicidal mindset. His way of “living” is never questioned. He dies as he planned, even saying “this is how it should be” as his last words.
This is probably entirely intentional.
Shinjiro’s death serves as a cautionary tale for Ken on how his life could turn out if he keeps devoting himself single mindedly to hate and revenge, without letting himself live and love others. The resolution Shinji never got in life is transferred onto Ken.
However, I don’t think that this works as well as Shinji reaching that conclusion himself. Ken’s character arc is kinda... abandoned after this point? He comes to the conclusion that he wants to keep living in a way that Shinjiro didn’t get to, and then… that’s it. He’s pushed to the side for the rest of the game. (I feel like the movies fix this, but I want to focus on the games for now.) Ken’s social link in P3P tries to address this by focusing on him deciding what kind of life he wants to live as the next step of deciding that he wants to live. But, uh, the SL takes a turn at rank seven or so, messing with the development it was trying to set up, and cementing it one of the most uncomfortable social links ever lol.
In P3P’s main story Ken gets most of the same development that he gets in the other versions, but Shinjiro gets more character alongside him.
This character, whose every aspect is so intertwined with death and his coming end, from his Persona’s design to his relationships to others to his every line of dialogue, is forced to live. His social link is basically him getting his last will and testament in order. He tries to get the members of SEES to take care of themselves, because he knows no one else will do it when he’s not there. His second to last rank is just him asking Kotone to talk with him as long as possible, so that he can be content with that last happy moment with her before he dies. In his last rank, he asks Kotone to take care of Akihiko in his stead. And at that point, in his eyes, everything is done. He’s done all he can for SEES, for Ken and Aki specifically, and he trusts that Kotone will be fine and will still be happy after he’s gone. He’s even gotten back the watch that he was sure he’d never see again. The game makes this conclusion clear as well: you’re at Rank 10, so there should be nothing more to do. From a pure gameplay perspective, and from Shinji’s perspective, any other time you try to spend with him is a waste. If you try to talk to him after Rank 10, (only possible on 10/2 or 10/3, right before he dies) you get a message saying “It doesn’t seem that your relationship can get any closer than it is… Would you still like to spend time with him?”
His impending death and his acceptance of it are so baked into the narrative that the game itself seems confused that you’d try to keep spending time with him. Shinjiro, of course, repeats this sentiment.
But he spends time with you anyway, whether you do his romance route or not, defying the path that he’s set up for himself. He’s tried to exist in the world without really living in it, basically living through the most elaborate suicide plot in history, but strays for that for a moment because he’s grown to care for Kotone.
But it isn’t enough to change his outlook completely. During the romance scene, he says that “this isn’t how it’s supposed to be.” If you try to hang out with him the next day he basically refuses to talk to you, says that it would be a waste and that you should spend time with the others.
He is still resigned to his death, and acts in much the same way he does in Male MC’s route on 10/4. He still protects Ken, still gets shot, still says “this is how it should be,” a direct contrast to the line from the romance scene, and he… doesn’t die.
The one event in his arc that it seemed so sure everything was moving towards, and it doesn’t happen. He doesn’t die. Kotone’s actions flip everything on its head. The bullet is even blocked by the watch you have to give him before seeing Rank 10, an obvious physical representation of their relationship and how it's beginning to change his outlook.
Is this kind of cheesy? Maybe?
But I think that it’s also meaningful.
After that he basically vanishes from the story other than a couple mentions of him being in a coma for the rest of the story and a missable NPC on 3/3 saying that he got out of the hospital lol. This is kinda underwhelming.
BUT in new game plus there’s a conclusion to all of this! He shows up in the last moments of the game and finally gets to talk to Kotone again. He talks about how he saw Kotone in his dreams the whole time and it gave him the strength to keep going, a reversal of his line in the romance scene lamenting that she’s “all he can think about, day and night.” Then the game ends with him saying this:
“I’m glad I met you.”
This single line encapsulated so much of the game’s themes for me. He’s saying that he’s glad he didn’t die in that moment, that he’s gained a life worth living, that even if having known her brings pain in the future that it was worth it for what little time they got together. He’s learned once and for all that life is worth living.
We get none of that if he dies. Instead, we get a Shinjiro who, while compelling, acts as more of a plot device and a springboard for Akihiko and Ken’s stories than his own character. His original arc captures the inevitability of death, yes, but I feel like it missed the imperative component of the importance of life. So the existence of P3P as an alternate scenario where he is more fleshed out is valuable to me.
I don’t think these themes would have worked as well if the route we saw portrayed in P3P was the only version of the game. The fact that we see the flip side makes this version of Shinji’s arc stand out more. The fact that we’ve seen him die before highlights how fated it was to happen, and the wonderful anomaly that his second chance at life is.
However, while I think that Shinji’s survival improves his own arc, it does lessen the impact of Akihiko’s arc. Akihiko’s resolution was still undeniably meaningful to me as someone who started with FeMC’s route, but the original version of it probably works better. But I think it’s fine that the game trades Aki’s arc for Shinji’s in this way, as the original version of Aki’s arc still exists untouched in the male route. FeMC’s route is a complement, not a replacement. It does some things worse, and other things better in their place.

Aye aye! Thankie for the reminder, lemme cook that up, big posr style.
So, Yusei is absolutely not walking away from the plot of 5Ds without being a lil bit fucked up. And while Satellite has given him the ability to simply say 'I will put my nose straight through the grindstone and ignore what is happening to me' (for better or for worse), he also has friends that think it important to help him out.
Leo, our wonderful ball of sunshine, can clock immediately when Yusei is in a certain kind of funk that he can handle. He calls it 'Old Paper White' or 'New Paper White' (if Yusei's freaked out enough to go pale). 'Old Paper White' means that Leo can generally goad Yusei into a duel on the work bench, and bemoan his loss in a way to get Yusei to focus on tips and assistance and generally just Big Brothering Leo until he relaxes. 'New Paper' is trickier, because it's probably a deuling related nightmare at the cause. Which means it's time for different games, be it activity books or putting together plastic models together. Leo would definitely enjoy the Duel Monsters Counterpart of Gunpla, and I think Yusei would find the gentle rhythm of 'Snip piece, connect piece' soothing.
Luna's tactics are fairly similar, though with a different approach. She's armed with fidgit toys and puzzles and big long words and her big wide eyes. She'll word tasks very specifically as 'can you help me with this' or 'can you do this for me', and generally weaponises her Baby Sister Status for his benefit. Because it leans on Yusei's 'Can and Will Do Anything For His Friends' part of his will power, she can get him to focus on small tasks like getting to a safe place or solving a rubix cube until he's calmer.
Crow has been spending years knowing the exact balance of 'filling silence' and 'engaging questions' for Yusei to steady himself to. Crow knows all the gossip, what friends are where, interesting mechanical news, all the safe topics. Crow also knows the exact tone of voice to use that signals that nothing is happening, because it's a very different and specific tone of voice to 'we're pretending to be unaware of cops/gangs/attackers' from back when they were younger. He's also totally clued in to what Yusei's different levels on non-verbal answers or non-answers mean, so he can focus on Yusei without focusing *so much* on Yusei that it stresses him out.
Aki's learned the exact levels and kinds of white noise helps Yusei out. Too much or the wrong sounds and he gets over-stimmed or stressed out, too little makes him anxious because actual silence means something bad is about to happen. She also uses a few meditation techniques with him; she may have learned them at Arcadia, but she controls what she knows now. They're both at least a little fond of it; panic attacks or nightmares aren't something that you can fight physically, but this is almost close. Aki's also the one most on top of making sure he takes a painkiller and eats something afterwards, because he always gets a huge headache from being so tense, and he *will* try and just work through it if left to his own devices.
Jack's the only person who can safely goad Yusei into hitting him without Yusei getting *too* wrapped up in being guilty about it. It's very much not a 'Jack deserves to be hurt' thing, but that it's equal measures of that Jack's Always Gonna Do What He Wants and years of Jack-To-Yusei wordless communication between the two of them. He asks for it because he can take it and Yusei can't. It's a Rivals Thing:tm:. It also helps when Crow rolls his eyes and tells Jack off about it like nothing happened. If they can hit a duel, great, but if we're at the bottom option, Jack is of course the one who knows how to be callous to be kind.

Chainsaw Man Sleepover
characters: Kobeni, Power
a/n: still only writing for Kobeni and Power! ik it's lame that i only write for two characters at the moment but i feel comfortable writing for these two. I will add more soon promise 🫶🫶 this is basically how they are at a sleepover with their partner, pls note that I've never been to a sleepover because i get nervous in other people homes and i get nervous having people over lol

Very nervous, she's never been to a sleepover.
She's very excited for it though! Kobeni buys good snacks and drinks for you both. Also brings board games and movies to keep you both entertained.
She's shows up earlier than the agreed time so she can help set up anything. Also suggest the idea of a pillow fort.
When it gets later into the evening, Kobeni changes into her pajamas. An old black tshirt and shorts. She declines you trying to let her borrow any if your clothes, however she does wear your slippers
Hates horror movies
Absolutely refuses to watch one with you, prefers romance or comedy movies
When you both finally do go to bed, Kobeni isn't sure what to do. She wants to cuddle up next to you but what if you need your space while sleeping? Or what if you don't want her on your bed? or.. or
"Kobeni, come on! i grabbed extra blankets for the bed! Is there a specific side of the bed you like?"
Smiling, Kobeni hops into the bed with you. Allowing you to undo the ponytail and take out her clips, she snuggles into you.
You both talk about random things, work, plans, anything special that was done recently, just anything before you both drifted off asleep
Power:
Very calm, which was a little unnerving to you
When Power arrived, she was carrying a pet carrier containing Meowy.
"Ahem! BEHOLD! A bag full of precious resources that I gathered!
Power didn't buy the snacks that were in the bag, Aki bought them. But it's still sweet that she brought them.
You did convince her to shower and even helped her wash and dry her hair. Power seemed to enjoy it.
Power didn't bring any extra clothes and decides to steal borrow some of your clothes. This leads to an almost 2 hour fashion clothes of Power trying on different articles of clothing.
When you both go to settle down to watch a movie, Power demands to watch the bloodiest, most gruesomiest(idk how to spell it) horror movie you have
You put on a sad romance movie and Power cries at the end
Power doesn't even ask if she can sleep in your bed, her and Meowy are already lying on it all comfortable.
She pulls you into her chest because she doesn't want accidentally poke your eye out with her horns if she laid on your chest.
"Human, Come here and give me and Meowy your attention. I worked so hard this week so you should come lie next to me."
Likes talking about her future plans, nobel prize, her plan to take over the world, and how annoying she thinks Denji and Aki are before falling asleep.

collated a bunch of old sketches of his family!! aki was originally going to be a part of a big like. chinese-zodiac inspired thing and his family in particular were the snakes (he's got the character in his last name lol) and him and his siblings all got snake characteristics . there is however nothing new under the sun and even though i thought this was cool my friend was like "oh like fruits basket" and i shelved the idea LOL
in the end he just existed in a vaccum, i had nothing to do with him, before i dragged him out of there with the intention to drop him into a simpler slice-of-life story with a bunch of terrible postgrad students. that story mainly revolves around like.. biomed researchers basically?? aki would have been an ex-STEM student who dropped out because he didn't want to do medicine anymore, but kept in touch with his friends from the course (the other cast might eventually also be forced into IFs LOL)

i eventually completely veered off the zodiac-course and kept his base design and turned those scales into tattoos! he's got more in infamous, but in this universe it's just those snakes winding around his arms!!!! infamous tattoos are kind of not set in stone cause i plan to add more (inspired by the bandmates) and the tattoos are supposed to be based off them!! there was no way he'd stop at just seven's initials, he has a little thing for all of them!!!! bc we're only really two chapters into infamous tho i just want more time to "know" the bandmates and then give more him more tats (i have been reading asks about them and trying to assign stuff LMFMFMFAOOO)
what he has and i consistently draw him w are seven's initials, the snakes (leftover design from the kind of concept he was based off of), lotuses/flowers (could change!! i'm thinking rn that he gets everyone's favorite flower/plant tattooed), wave designs (i'm praying someone's a water sign), and he's also got the opening notes of their first song that they played as a band :)
the original version of him is also based vaguely off a friend i made in uni who did hair/makeup and which i still think is so cool and gave him that !!!! more specifically he sort of dropped out of a good-asian-kid stem course to do this, which freaked his parents out when they realised he was just Leaving to go cut people's hair. aki's pretty great at it, and is lucky enough to work at a good stylist agency <3
kills it at karaoke with his friends in this universe too :) his genuine passion for working as a stylist and love for his job translates into music for infamous, which despite how "i'm-so-cool-and-chill-about-everything" he tries to seem, is his biggest worry. he really really wants to succeed and stick it to his parents, and can't imagine what else he'd ever do. music is all he has and really gets lost in songwriting/singing :)
his stage name akiya is also a reference to the word for abandoned/empty houses in rural areas in japan. they're cheap to buy, but cost a lot to repair and flip. this is a stealth dig at his parents lol but aki passes it off as a portmanteau of his first/last name: he is secretly emo like this </3
also their band name, snakebites, in general is like 1) "what's cool when we are 16 and making this band when we are in high school" and 2) the band's shared birth year being the year of the snake (2001/i'm projecting) (they're still like 25/26 which makes infamous oddly take place in the future for me, 2027ish???) and luckily i don't believe the year it takes place matters to anyone so i'm just going with it <3 don't think about it too hard this is deep lore that only makes sense to me
their fandom name also call themselves snakes, and they lean into this for their promo materials (each member gets a government assigned snake breed) LMFAO !! aki lightly thinks its cringe but it's not hurting anyone, so he just told maya that he thought the name was great LOLLLLL !!! they have a vaguely edgy image because of this (and because ya know. lots of drama surrounding seven leaving) even though they're much more an indie rock band (sounding more like hippo campus, yona yona weekenders, young the giant) with a reputation for being wholesome
there's also a fun game their fans like to play called "using aki's hair, what era of snakebites is this" LOL <3

Not gonna lie yeah ur question does sound a little perverted 🤭🤭 but y’know u are among friends in this genre 😂
I answered a similar question before, about whether I think Akihito is a great beauty? but i’ll answer again for emphasis 👌
There is common troupe in BL’s, that i think fits Akihito to a tee..
The troupe is basically this — Normal, average dude becomes the uke for a seme who is ridiclously handsome, successful and rich. Yet despite their difference in status and the uke having supposedly an average apparance, he is still flooded with admirers who openly want him to break up with boyfriend and pursue him. The story ultimatly makes the line blurry over which of the male leads — the uke or the seme is the actual catch! And it is somewhat reveals that the uke is the one that is special, desirable, and actually incrediably physically attractive.
In this way. Akihito looks are kinda deceiving. Where does he fit in this troupe? Is he actually a great beauty or is he just a normal guy with a heart of gold that people become attached to.
This is hard to answer because Asami did not approach Akihito because of he was touched by kindness — which is often how the above BL troupe plays out in other Manga’s. Asami approached him for very impure reasons. Probably to purposefully sully that “heart of gold” I mean he does love a good challenge! I tend to say that I actually do believe that Akihito is actually very good looking, and his must be body noticably good — and that this was the real reason Asami first approached him. He was more interested in Akihito’s physical body then anything else— and only later found out about his whole heart of gold trait which I think became the reason Asami stayed.
But here is also what i mean when I say Akihito’s looks are deceiving. He is a guy who is frequently described by fic writers and by sensei her self, as someone who doesn’t put a lot of effort into his looks. He wears causal street clothing, jeans and Tshirts. His hair is sorta wild and spikey. He is described as a delinquent - but internally he is not one at all! In fact he has very strong morales but for some reason he doesn’t care if people thinks he is one based on his appearances. Which tells me he simply does not care about his outward appearance.
In contrast we have Asami - he wears neatly pressed and polished suits. Which are frequently said to be custom made! He slicks his hair back every morning. His neatly polished outward appearances is in contrast with his real life underworld crime boss persona. Which in Japan — is in total contrast with peoples ideas about what “bad people” look like. Yakuza’s have a specific aesthetic that is very identifiable (espeically in manga) but Asami just does not fit that at all! And that in a way is meant to be the irony of their characters.
Akihito looks like delinquent but he isn’t one. Asami looks like a clean cut upright business man - but he isn’t one! Both very deliberately chooses.
Anyway the reason I point this all out is because - it’s my personal belief that Akihito is actually extremely good looking and eye catching! Enough that his physical apparance was enough to catch Asami’s eye. But because of how he presents himself outwardly— you might not realize it right away. But Asami I think has an eye for these things. He has an eye for talent, one might say! I think he saw right through Akihito and knew he was something special.
We know Akihito must meet basic standard of attractiveness - y know having clear skin, nice teeth and smile, youthfulness. But In a way I think you might think he is attractive but not worth a secound glance- and that is where I think he is deceiving. Because he has the type attractiveness that you maybe wouldn’t notice on first glance. I often say that Akihito looks are like diamond in the rough kind thing — I think he is really a hidden prince under neath an exterior that is rather shaby. He has an outer shell that is kinda rugged and unruly — it’s hard to see past. Especially in a place like Japan were outward apparances mean a lot.
This idea of Akihito’s looks being fairly innocuous is confirmed by the many associates of Asami who repeatably are shocked that Asami even associates with Akihito. It’s not shock over Asami being in a relationship with a man— its shock that Akihito seems so plain. Akihito is seen as an outlier in Asami’s life. The people around Asami see Akihito as Below Average—In comparison to the grandeur and status that Asami has.
If Asami is this powerful person — shouldn’t he have the best of the best? But instead he keeps this grungy teenager looken dude around?? To their eyes it makes no sense. No body cares about what Akihito’s abilities are, or if he’s kind or talented, because in their eyes Akihito is just a boy toy. Yet, they don’t get what his appeal is. They questioning their relationship because of Akihito’s unassuming, and delinquent apparance— which is in such contrast to Asami’s clean cut business like outward appearance.
Y’know what I mean. Maybe they can agree that Akihito is good looking but he still clashs with Asami’s persona. Although their contrast i think has always been this manga’s charm.
Almost all the characters have said something allong the lines of what’s so special about him?? Mikhail in their first meeting on the boat in Hong Kong arch, Kuroda too— saying its one of Asami’s “whims”. It was really only Fei Long who knew right away that Akihito must be “one of Asami’s” as he said during their first meeting, and he immediately saw that Akihito was physically attractive with “fine skin”.
The Sudo arch, where Sudo repeatably expresses a confusion and jealous over Akihito’s presence in Asami’s life! Obviously his questioning of their relationship is rooted in jealousy. But he also has, I think, good reason to wonder what hold Akihito has on Asami. In his eyes he has given everything to be Asami’s best guy— litterally bending over backwards to be noticed but it still it has no affect. Meanwhile, in Sudo’s eyes Akihito is unrefined, and unfit for the likes of Asami. This arc is interesting for a number of reasons, and I am gonna go off on a tangent talking about it. Because i think it’s really not an accident that Akihito and Sudo are meant to be visually similar.
Sudo is presented to us as almost a “better” version of Akihito. We know he obviously cant hold a candle to our boy!… but he is in a way a version of Akihito that is more mature, business savy, cleaner cut, stylish and trendy in all the ways that Akihito is NOT. He’s sophiscated, he effectively runs one of Asami’s clubs, he’s in the same circles that Asami is in. He was successfully for some time, and he did it all for Asami — all with a mindset that if he could be Asami’s most useful person — Asami would finally pay attention to him. Akihito at least views Sudo as someone who would be a better equal for Asami — compared to himself which he views negatively. Though this is all through Akihito’s insecure eyes — the audience learns early that Asami has no particular feeling towards Sudo at all and actually the “qualities” Sudo have — his ambition and greed are all things Asami AVOID’s when it comes to potential love interest.
But the point is— they all don’t understand the appeal that is — until they are maybe face to face with him that they get it. Even Mikhail, who seems only ever interested in Fei Long, points out early on that it’s Akihito’s body that Fei and Asami are fighting over during the naked arch truth. And it somewhat happens a lot during the story, someone will be unimpressed with Akihito and then they strip him on his clothing and suddenly!! It’s like Akihito is a different person in their eyes- Asami, fei long, Yuri, sakazaki all where enticed by his allure - even Mikhail had to admit that it was his body that was seducing people! Sudo too gets increasingly petty about Akihito and later accuses him of “climbing into Asami’s bed” —and weirdly despite being totally hot for Asami, Sudo ends up using Akihito to get off sexually.
Akihito is of course, very unaware of his own sexual appeal. He is able to hide in plain sight when you think about it. All behind a sorta boyish immature-ness. He flies under the radar for a lot of people. Until you very suddenly become aware of him.
On a side note— Can you imagine a world in which Akihito cleaned himself up and put himself together. Made himself look more like Asami— I think he might become too powerful!! I am sure Asami perfers him like this — he is already dealing with enough competition as it is!
