Posted @withregram • @seekersofthecosmos Contained in that dark heart, around which the entire galaxy revolves, is a supermassive black hole named Sagittarius A*, clocking in at around 4.3 million times the mass of the Sun. We've been able to infer its presence, and measure it, based on the movements of objects around it, but never had we seen the object itself. Never, that is, until now. That image at the top of the screen is Sgr A* itself, seen by humanity for the very first time, thanks to the hard work of the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration. Some of you definitely haven't experienced the intimacy of the sunlight filtering through the curtains in the morning with the gentle breeze breezing outside, or the moonlight shining through the window panes in the night with our without the moon playing hide-and-seek with the clouds floating in the sky, or the flickering of candle flames, and the dancing of plants and trees when it's raining outside, and it shows.
Remember all those movies where a giant asteroid was threatening Earth and the only way to prevent that is to hit it and divert it from its orbit?
So this week NASA turned it into a crazy reality.
In the context of a special NASA mission called Dart a spacecraft was sent to a distance of 11 million kilometers in order to hit the small asteroid "Dimorphosis" that were about 160 meters.
And we have an injury - exactly on Tuesday night at 02:14 (according to Israel clock) the small blister hit an asteroid. The moment of the explosion was captured by one of the satellites aimed at the asteroid and the picture was broadcast worldwide.
In the next few days NASA will continue to monitor the asteroid to make sure that it is really a host in its orbit.
And as NASA concluded the experiment: "From now on you can sleep better at night"
