History Lessons from NCIS: Hawaii
Tumblr media
Since NCIS Hawaii is on hiatus until January, I decided to rewatch the first season of NCIS: Hawaii and I noticed that the characters in the TV show talked about pearls from the South China Sea. As someone who is a fashion and jewelry enthusiast, I thought it was interesting that Maggie Shaw (who was Jane’s mentor and friend) gave her daughter (Julie) a necklace of “Wishing Pearls” from the South China Sea.
Tumblr media
The region of the South China Sea is known for the pearls. They “are generally much larger than other pearl types and have a unique luster quality – a soft reflection due to the large aragonite platelets that make up the pearl. They also have the thickest average nacre of all cultured pearls. These factors make South Seas both distinctive and valuable.”
One of the most famous pearl distributors is named “Mikimoto”. “Kokichi Mikimoto decided to try culturing pearls that are loved by people all over the world. He was a dreamer, and he did not let his dream die. He became the first in the world to successfully culture a semi-spherical pearl in 1893. He continued his attempt to culture many different types of pearls, including black and white South Sea cultured pearls.”
For the Miss Universe 2007 pageant, Vanessa Lachey hosted the event with Mario Lopez. It was the last time that the winner (Riyo Mori of Japan) would wear the Mikimoto Miss Universe Crown until 2017 where Demi Leigh Tebow of South Africa won. The crown commemorated the fifth anniversary and the official jewel sponsor of the Miss Universe Organization. It is one of the most popular crowns.

South Sea pearls are the largest cultured-pearl variety, sometimes reaching over 20 millimeters in diameter. The Pinctada maxima oyster can take up to five years to produce a single South Sea pearl, whereas more common freshwater oysters can take as little as three months and create dozens of pearls. This long cultivation process makes South Sea pearls rarer — and more expensive. A single South Sea pearl can cost $1,500, and a necklace can reach over $200,000. So, how are these pearls grown? And what makes them so expensive?
