The Insider Union, affiliated with NewsGuild of New York, said 22 of its members as well as “many of our non-union colleagues” were laid off. “From the timing of today’s announcement — not even a month after our layoff moratorium expired — it’s clear that management has been eager to lay more of us off,” Emma LeGault, unit chair for Insider Union and a senior copy editor for Business Insider, said in a statement.

Two disillusioned House Republicans unloaded on their vengeful leadership for inadvertently making a hero out of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar by publicly stripping her of a high-profile committee assignment in what one deemed the "stupidest vote in the world."
The not-so-private condemnation of Speaker Kevin McCarthy's campaign to remove Omar from the House Foreign Affairs panel happened after Republicans clinched the retaliatory strike on a party-line vote of 218-211.
As they rode the elevator away from the House floor, congressional newspaper Roll Call reported that Foreign Affairs Committee GOP member Ken Buck and Republican Rep. Mike Simpson reflected on what had just transpired and decided it was a boneheaded move.
After Buck decreed it the "stupidest" political move, Simpson said the expulsion would probably make the Minnesota Democrat into a "martyr."
After airing their grievances, the pair reportedly asked those around them "not to let leadership know their thoughts."
Buck and Simpson's offices did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
The polarizing ouster only fell into place after McCarthy won over a handful of Republicans who had voiced objections to the effort — including Republican Reps. Nancy Mace of South Carolina and Victoria Spartz of Indiana — by promising to reform internal punishment procedures moving forward.
Incensed Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York denounced the entire process as hypocrisy writ large.
"Don't tell me that this is about a condemnation of anti-Semitic remarks, when you have a member of the Republican caucus who has talked about Jewish space lasers, and also elevated her to some of the highest committee assignments in this body," Ocasio-Cortez said on the floor, referring to Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia. "This is about targeting women of color in the United States of America."

Aquaman II, Arthur and Orm, and Mera (Spoiler Warning).
So, we've probably all heard something about the controversy over reducing Amber Heard's role in Aquaman II. Faced with accusations that this was done to punish Amber Heard for the controversy around her ex-husband's lawsuit against her, or to appease his rabid fans, DC/WB/James Wan have offered the defence that they always intended to reduce Mera's role from the first film, with the second one focussing on Aquaman and Orm.
There's probably some truth to this- it is unfortunately common in Hollywood action/superhero films for the first film's female lead to be absent from or have a reduced role in sequels, or outright get fridged (see Vanessa in Deadpool II, for example). Its also clear that the film is focussed on Arthur and Orm's relationship and Orm's redemption arc, and a lot of the film's plot and themes play into that, to an extent that this is unlikely to be entirely a product of edits/reshoots- if a change to this effect was made, it was likely early in the scriptwriting process, before shooting started.
That said, this explanation does not entirely hold water (pun intended), for a few reasons.
Heard's own claims, corroborated at least partially by others, that her role was reduced and that she was subjected to hostility on-set over the controversy. Note to anyone who wants to dismiss this as her lying for advantage: she made these claims in a trial she did not want or initiate (Depp sued her), and in private therapy notes that were unsealed after the trial.
At least two Mera scenes were reportedly originally intended and subsequently cut, as reported by Variety last year: https://variety.com/2023/film/news/aquaman-2-jason-momoa-drunk-claims-amber-heard-cut-scenes-elon-musk-letter-1235747775/ This corroborates some of Heard's claims. The same article notes that the defence that they considered firing Heard because of a lack of chemistry with Momoa is challenged by the fact "that Heard did a chemistry test with Momoa before landing the role of Mera and beat out two other actresses who did a similar chemistry test". In fairness, though, it does not appear that only Heard was targeted by cuts- various outlets have reported a total of 20 scenes were cut.
From a storytelling perspective, giving Mera more screen time and having the film focus on Arthur's relationship with Orm are not contradictory goals. When discussing Heard's reduced role, an article by Business Insider suggested that Mera may originally have been intended to accompany Arthur to break out Orm: https://www.businessinsider.com/amber-heard-aquaman-2-how-much-screen-time-sequel-lines-2023-12 I can't say whether this was ever actually considered or planned (I doubt such scenes were actually shot, as the cut Mera scenes reportedly included a fight with Black Manta and a romantic scene with Arthur). But I do think that had they done this, it would likely have strengthened Orm's arc, and the film overall. Because, Orm probably has more history with Mera than any other character in the film, even if its mostly implied/off-screen. He didn't just lose his throne to Arthur- he also lost Mera to him. Manta even taunts Arthur about taking Mera from Orm (or, more accurately, Mera chose him over Orm). Then, at the climax, Orm saves Mera and her child with Arthur from death. But it really feels like there should have been a scene or two in-between, where Orm and Mera talk about their history.
You can't justify cutting Mera by saying that the film is focussed on Arthur's relationship with Orm, because their respective relationships with Mera are a part of their relationship with each other.
I mostly enjoyed the film, and there were some good scenes dealing with Orm's relationship with his family. But it could have been much more.

You know one thing I watch that I legit enjoy?
Business Insider
I know it sounds boring, but I promise you it's not. So Expensive, Still standing, World Wide Waste and quite a few other series of theirs are just fascinating windows into the world. They are also informative.
Like I just learned that the shopping mall was invented by a socialist that was trying to create third spaces in the new post ww2 suburban sprawl that sprang up. And like a lot of good ideas it got completely co-opted by big business. (Look for rise and fall series if you want to see it)
I dunno im just surprised at how good their episodes are.

Another fun editorial from my "favorite" publication, Business Insider.
Tumblr media
This was written by the 57 year old rich man who founded it and is currently the CEO. But notice how the choice of picture tries to trick you into thinking a hot younger woman wrote it.
Which is odd, because BI can, and does!, hire hot younger women to write crap like this, all the time. Traditionally targeting Millenials. But I guess our persistent refusal to get knocked up has finally driven BI off to go harass our younger siblings. And Old Henry just couldn't contain himself around all these new young empty wombs anymore.
I read it to see why exactly, on a planet with too many people and too little affordable houses, this rich white man is so upset that people under 40 aren't breeding like they used to. He doesn't give a good reason, just something about how "giving children life" is brave. Which it isn't, by any definition of the word.
What he does take pains to do is explain why all our reasons for refusing to breed are bullshit. Well, he doesn't say it so harshly. Because obviously he's figured out that Elon Musk ordering white people to provide babies for his new crazy experiments isn't a method that's working. So Henry soft-pedals it. He admits war and climate change and political chaos are real, but not THAT real (I have no idea; you figure it out). But even if they are, and I'm paraphrasing here, don't worry, some heretofore unknown wizard or Superman shall appear and fix everything. So no worries, ladies! Be filled with seed!
What Henry doesn't seem to understand is that climate change and general violent chaos may be two of the stated reasons people have for not having kids, but aren't the only ones, or even the major ones. Most people who aren't as mostly-gay and mostly-asexual as myself are under the constant pressures of horniness and family expectations to not let the coming doom of the world at-large change their stances on condom usage.
People avoid having kids because of a perceived lack of support for their personal child-rearing, be it financial or social. If they are having issues with long-term commitment or financial security, they aren't going to sign up for 20+ years of raising another human being. And because we aren't willful idiots, we know financial security is ALSO a big reason people have problems maintaining long-term relationships.
Henry, no one under 40 is going to have kids if they know they're going to have to find a new apartment or a new job, in a new place, every 3 to 6 years. That instability is what is frosting everyone's nethers. And that isn't a philosophical problem, that is a systemic capitalism problem.
That guys like Henry caused. Because Old Henry here had to pay $4 million to the US Government back in 2003 for tricking people into investing in shitty 1990s dot-coms he knew were about to fall apart. He is banned from trading securities and working in the financial services industry anymore because of this.
People don't have babies on a roller-coaster, Henry. And you help build that roller-coaster. They aren't breeding because of YOU, you idiot. So you're hardly in a position to be lecturing anyone about how they aren't doing enough bareback.
...Also, back to the question of why old rich men like Henry Blodget are so worried about "population decline," a thing that isn't a thing. Sans him actually giving the game away, I'm free to speculate, and I will. This is probably that thing where he's worried about America's garbage social security system getting even more pointless without enough young people to steal from to pay the bills. Which is, AGAIN, only a problem because guys like Henry engineered both it and the economy in such ways that it is. They made a joke of a system that runs on bad stupid rules and now blame us for not following those rules. And one of those rules is "you (white people) all need to breed like rabbits," because every system these people make, including their religions, has that same weird rule.
Because these are weird, bad people. Who do financial crimes.
And that's why we don't listen to them.

Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida took credit for sending planeloads of migrants to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, as part of an apparent bid to force authorities in another state to take responsibility for them.
State Sen. Julian Cyr of Massachusetts told The New York Times that around 50 migrants arrived in two planes about 3 p.m. local time, with no warning.
Fox News Digital, which first reported the story, published a video of migrants disembarking from planes on the island and getting into a van.
Tumblr media
"Yes, Florida can confirm the two planes with illegal immigrants that arrived in Martha's Vineyard today were part of the state's relocation program to transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations," Taryn Fenske, the communications director for DeSantis, told the outlet.
Tumblr media
State Rep. Dylan Fernandes on Twitter said the community rallied to help the migrants, putting them up in a local church.
"Our island jumped into action putting together 50 beds, giving everyone a good meal, providing a play area for the children, making sure people have the healthcare and support they need. We are a community that comes together to support immigrants," he wrote on Twitter.
He also shared photos of the makeshift accommodation.
Cyr, speaking with the Martha's Vineyard Times, criticized the move as a cruel political stunt. On Twitter, he said the migrants had arrived on a charter flight from Texas and appeared to be mostly from Venezuela.
"This is deeply disgusting. This is a cruel ruse that manipulates families that are seeking a better life," he said, describing them as "fundamentally racist tactics."
In recent weeks, the Republican-led states of Texas and Arizona have sent thousands of migrants to Democratic-led areas, including New York, Chicago, and Washington, DC.
They say President Joe Biden's policies are behind a rise in unauthorized migration and that Democratic-led cities should bear the responsibility for them. Some of the areas migrants have been sent to voted to become "sanctuary cities," places where authorities deliberately do not cooperate with efforts to enforce migration laws.
DeSantis is burnishing his anti-migration credentials amid rumors he's positioning himself for a presidential bid in 2024.
Martha's Vineyard is an agricultural area and exclusive vacation destination where former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, as well as Hillary Clinton, frequently spend time. In the offseason, it has about 20,000 residents, and locals told The New York Times there were concerns about the town's long-term ability to host the migrants.
Christina Pushaw, a spokesperson for DeSantis, used the situation to troll liberals.
"Martha's Vineyard residents should be thrilled about this. They vote for sanctuary cities — they get a sanctuary city of their own," she tweeted. "And illegal aliens will increase the town's diversity, which is strength. Right?"
Tumblr media
Some of you may have been wondering, "Hey, @dontmeantobepoliticalbut, did DeSantis just use Floridian's taxes to fly migrants in Texas to Massachusetts?"
You'd be half-right. Remember Blue States pay for Red States. Florida used California's reallocated surplus taxes to fly Texas's migrants to Massachusetts...
The $12 million money comes from interest earnings from Florida's $8.8 billion portion of the American Rescue Plan's Coronavirus State Fiscal Recovery Fund. It provided $350 billion to state and local governments, which the U.S. Treasury said is "to support their response to and recovery from the COVID-19 public health emergency."
Another interesting thought....

Business Insider: "Israel dropped bombs near a Gaza border crossing packed with civilians who'd followed officials' pleas to flee: reports" (Oct 11, 2023)
Tumblr media
"Israel on Tuesday dropped bombs next to the only border crossing allowing civilians to flee Gaza after the Israeli military directed Palestinians, looking to escape air strikes in the war against Hamas, toward the crossing.
"Lt. Col. Richard Hecht, an IDF spokesman, urged Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip for Egypt early Tuesday, with the Times of Israel reporting he said: "Rafah crossing is still open. Anyone who can get out, I would advise them to get out."
