Yuma remembered the statue of Llymlaen in the Anchor Yard, and recalled how puzzled she had been to see the Navigator as half woman and half fish. She heard fairytales about mermaids when she was small, but she didn’t think there would be people out there that actually worshipped a mermaid goddess. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a fish tail like Llymlaen and stay underwater forever, Yuma thought. She could even do Limsa and favor and skewer that sea serpent eikon everyone was so afraid of before it could make any tidal waves. 

She played with the sea pickles in her hand, letting them crawl over her fingers, and daydreamed about what she would look like as a mermaid. She would have a bright red tail maybe, to match her hair, or she could have a tail as dark blue as the sea at night. Yuma didn’t want a showy, fanning tail like a betta fish. She would like something sleek and built for speed, like a shark or Ash tuna. 

Suddenly, a shadow of a life ring fell over her, snapping her out of her reverie. Yuma surfaced and found herself staring at the panicked face of a young Roegadyn Yellowjacket. He had been tossing life rings into the water, and now he stared at Yuma like she was a ghost.

“Thank the Navigator yer not dead!” said the Yellowjacket. “Ye’ve been down there so long, I thought ye’d drowned for sure!”

Yuma didn’t know anyone saw her go diving. She swam back to shore, where she shook seawater off her ears, splashing her would-be savior.

The Yellowjacket sighed. “Listen, lady, this is me second day on the job. I didn’t sign up to go fishing for corpses. If ye want t’ go swimmin’, try the beach at Mist. They’ve got an actual lifeguard.” 

Yuma didn’t say anything. She left the Yellowjacket to collect all the life rings alone.
