Kalam Patua

Renowned Kalighat painter, Kalam Patua was born on November 1, 1962 in Jhilli village, Murshidabad district of West Bengal. Kalam was born in the Patua community who skilled themselves as the scroll painters and wandered along the ghats of Kali temple in Kolkata in early 18th century to showcase their unique style of patachitra scroll paintings, which thereafter got the recognitions as kalighat paintings.

when death parts us, sunlight is a portal for us to meet again

dear billo,

i miss u. your story was shorter, but wilder. you wouldn’t have written it any other way. you’re a lover of the wind / all things changing and boundless. but it’s different now. you left your body and pain behind.

once upon a night, i wrote a question to dreamworld.

“at sunset, the moon and sun lock eyes, but barely find time to speak. how do they communicate still, against all odds?”

dreamworld answered me,

“when angels like billo leave earth, they become messengers between the moon and sun. his pain was felt deeply. by the earth’s core. the stars couldn’t watch him hurt for long. so they took him far away.

now he roams on nocturnal ventures, exploring every crater of the moon. at 4am, he flies to earth to watch you rest. he guards you, plants kisses on your forehead and cheekbones. he sends you the sweetest honey dreams, protecting you in your most peaceful state.

with time and patience, his unconditional love manifests as two things - budding moonflowers, which sustain the moon and glowing sundrops, which sustain the sun.

at 5am, billo prepares for sunrise. he collects every moonflower and sundrop he can find, until finally, he leaves earth again. he soars to the sky, pours sundrops into the sun's empty body, soars to the moon, and plants every moonflower he owns. he does this until the sun has the energy it needs to create glow. to sustain life. and to rise for a new day. when the sun rises, his moonflowers bloom, signaling to the moon that the night is over, it's time to go to sleep, and let the sun take over. angels like billo are the reason the sun rises. when you miss him - remember that.”

death has so many different meanings to different people. i guess that’s the beauty of it, but also the ambiguity of it.. in truth, nobody has a definite answer, as much as we may want one at times.

whatever we believe, though, stays with us when we are confronted with difficult goodbyes. i have no answers myself. my baby isn’t with me anymore, but this dream left me with a new outlook on the situation - a sweeter one :) that sunlight is built from his sweetness & unconditional love <3 which will always stay with me. i’ll remember him every time i watch the sun rise.
