Vee-Vee Power! A Penny Analysis
Just a heads up I'll probably be revisiting this analysis once we get the Scarlet/Violet DLC because likely there will be more insights to Penny's character.
Tumblr media
Alright so Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has probably introduced the most beloved friend group series that the franchise by the fandom standards in Penny, Arven, and Nemona. Both Arven and Nemona have had analysis on them but there's not that much going around for Penny who is my personal favorite of the three.
Let's start with Penny's name. Or names I should say since she ends up going by two different monikers. There's her given name Penny and her pseudonym Cassiopeia when she was the mysterious shadow head for Team Star. Penny comes from Peony and she's funnily the third character in the franchise to have her name based on this flower. Peonies symbolize many things such as shame, bashfulness, honor, and bravery. All of these apply to Penny to at some point during her story. One of the first things we realize about her is that she's quite bashful and quiet as a person. She even mentions at one point that's she's not used to speaking so much and that her throat hurts. While Team Star is huge source of pride for her, it also brings a bit of her shame as she feels that the group has gotten out of control and she feels bad that her friends may get expelled. She's also rather honorable in trying to take the fall for her friends once the initial fallout with the confrontation of the bullies takes place. And she's even willing to admit to hacking the LP system (which in and of itself isn't honorable but owning up to it is). And she demonstrates an immense amount of bravery in taking the fall for her friends, learning to come out of her shell and face the player to dissolve Team Star and then going down into Area Zero.
But then she has another name she goes by…Cassiopeia. Cassiopeia is the name of a major constellation named after a prominent figure in Greek Mythology. Cassiopeia was a nymph who boasted too much about her and her daughter's beauty which invoked the wrath of Poseidon who threatened to destroy the kingdom of Ethiopia (accounts vary as to whether he vowed to flood it or use the monster Cetus to destroy it). Cassiopeia, realizing that she messed up, consults the oracle who tells her she needs to sacrifice her daughter. Andromeda was chained to a rock but ultimately saved by Perseus. The gods, still not satisfied decide to put Cassiopeia into the heavens as the constellation as further punishment (and the names of 5 major stars that make up the constellation Cassiopeia are the same names of the Team Star bases)
Now what does ANY of that have to do with our resident Eeveelution enthusiast? Well if you strip both the Cassiopeia Myth and Penny's story down to the bare essentials, they're both about women who have to sacrifice something they love in order to save a greater population of people and end up getting punished harsher. Penny attempts to disband (therefore sacrifice) Team Star in order to protect all of the other Team star members (both admins and grunts). And out of all of those involved she had to be sent away to Galar, and then had some extra community service for her hacking of the league.
Alright now let's get down to her team makeup. She's notable in being the only single trainer in the canon to use all Eeveelutions (the Kimono sisters of Johto and the Eevee trainers of Alola are a collection of trainers who use one Eeveelution a piece but not a whole set). This certainly shows that she really likes the Eevee Line, but there's more to it. The eeveelution family is at this point synonymous to the idea of having multiple paths ahead of you (as we've seen in the anime with Chloe). So that implies Penny has a lot of paths still open for her and that's she changing. Indeed she does a change quite a bit through the story, albeit subtly.
One thing that stood out to me was that three out of her six Pokemon actually correspond to three of the types of the Team Star bases: fire, dark, and fairy. What's more when you look at who runs those bases (Mela, Giacomo and Ortega) you realize that Penny actually calls those three by nicknames (Mellie, Momo, and Ortie) suggesting potential closeness to those three in particular.
It's also notable that her first and last Pokemon, Umbreon and Sylveon evolve by friendship (at night) and high affection (with a fairy type move). It shows that's she's a very caring trainer and most likely a night owl who also likes cute things (which is very confirmed with an entire team off eeveelutions who all happen to know Baby-Doll eyes and Quick attack). She also clearly values friendship which explains how 1/3 of her team is comprised of Pokemon who happen to evolve by actually liking their trainer.
Now onto Penny in the story. We first meet her, ironically being harassed by her own grunts with them none the wiser that the girl they were pushing to join Team Star was their enigmatic leader. This is a major scene as it establishes Penny as a shy girl who struggles to stand up for herself. But also this proves to be a major catalyst for her wanting to disband Team Star. After all, Team Star was meant to protect kids from bullies, but now they were acting like the very people they despised. Now granted as we know in flashbacks from later on in the game there was already heat on Team Star from the school admin so the idea of trying to save her friends by disbanding the team was already on her mind. But feeling the effects of Team Star firsthand (seeing how at least the grunt level, they had lost their way) and seeing the player defeat them gives her the idea of how to dissolve the team.
We learn later that Team Star had created a code that prevented anyone from ordering each other around. Which makes a lot a sense given that Giacomo (the one who helped to create the code) had experienced the negative affects of having the power to order others around. But also it reflects the reality of how in grade school, certain cliques tend to have one person order others around which can be a perfect breeding ground for bullying to start. Since Team Star was founded on the concept of anti-bullying it makes sense that the members would try to avoid any situation where bullying could take place. The fact that Penny respects this code and seeks to use that to get Team Star to disband rather than just outright ordering them or some other method of forcing them shows how much they mean to her and how honorable she is deep down
"Team Star is a group of troublemakers formed by some academy students a while back… They cause headaches for the school and try to bring other students down to their level. And I refuse to sit idly by and let them get away with it!"
This is an interesting line when you look back the Starfall Street Story-line because it initially makes you think that the rumors are right about Team Star, especially after you see them harassing Penny earlier. That they are a bunch of bullies. Perhaps at that moment Penny was feeling a bit (rightfully) upset at how her group had changed since she was gone for those eighteen months. Or perhaps she was really just trying to play up the rumor side in order to get the player to agree. Either way when you see how she talks about Team Star later on it's actually a bit jarring to think about this line early on in the game where she seems to hold the same opinions of Team Star that the rest of the student body and administration do.
One thing to note when we're introduced to Penny as Cassiopeia we noticed a slight change in her dialogue. She sounds far more confident, she's able to talk for longer times than she does when we meet her as the supply rep. It makes sense as a lot of people who are quiet in real life tend to be better able to communicate behind the screen (or in Penny's case, hack your Rotom Phone).
Also, both Cassiopeia's first entrance and "supply rep" Penny both mention hacking upon introducing themselves which is nice foreshadowing to the fact that they are indeed the same person.
When you meet Penny as the supply rep for the first time she thanks you for helping her out back at the stairs to which you can reply that you remember or that you don't. And she says a really sad line if you mention that you don't
"That figures. I never leave an impression on people…"
That really broke my heart. It's unfortunately a common feeling for people who have been bullied. Yeah they're targets they're often made to feel invisible when they are not being made fun of.
As we meet up with Clive we start to see Penny's suspicion of this "student" that wants to join. I know there are people who don't care for Penny and cite that she is a little mean, her early treatment of Clive being one example people point out. To be honest, I personally do not see this as her being mean. Rather's she being rightly cautious about who she let's on. Yes, she wants to bring down Team Star, but she still cares for them and she knows how much of the school dislikes them. She couldn't ascertain if Clive had been one of the bullies' friends who just wanted to seek revenge. This is different from the player who doesn't have the same long term knowledge of them team therefore a little bit more trustworthy. And over time she does truly begin to trust Clive and apologizes for the early wariness
As we go through Operation Starfall, we get some really nice insight into Penny's character both as herself and as Cassiopeia. As we approach each base we get really detailed info on the boss from Cassiopeia which at first with just the knowledge of her hacking skills you could assume this just her getting information from social media. That is until you beat the boss and she sounds like she's mourning their defeat to which she always mentions she's caught up in her thoughts. This shows that there's far more to this story than meets the eye which should be raising your suspicion of Cassiopeia. Indeed Clive even asks the player how much you trust them.
Things really come to ahead by the fourth base the player defeats where we learn this
"…As you know, Team Star was formed by a group of students who were being bullied at school. Shortly after forming the team, these students—none other than the squad bosses themselves—confronted their bullies head on. The outcome was a resounding victory for Team Star… Though you could hardly call it a contest. The bullies didn't even put up a fight. They all bolted from battle the first chance they got. Scared spitless of Team Star, the bullies then dropped out of school, one after another… And Team Star ended up the villains of the story. …But that's neither here nor there. Forget I mentioned it."
This quote not only sheds light on what really happened with Team Star (which was being confirmed anyways by the bosses that have been defeated) but it's also meant to bring into question why is Cassiopeia so determined to bring them down knowing that Team Star weren't the ones in the wrong.
Meanwhile as we continue to meet Penny as the supply rep we notice that Koraidon/Miraidon continues to pop out of it's ball to greet her with an affectionate lick. Something we don't see the dragon do with either Arven or Nemona. Given the suspicion that should be surrounding her by the time we get to the big reveal it makes sense why we see this take place. To let us know that deep down Penny is still a good person based on the dragon showing instant affection to her. That and perhaps the dragon sees itself in Penny as we learn in the Area Zero content that Koraidon/Miraidon itself are also struggling to stand up much like Penny is struggling to stand up to be her authentic self.
When we get to the final reveal in the schoolyard we're treated to this quote
""Heh. This must be quite a shock for you. The big boss… Cassiopeia… They were both me all along. When I saw you make quick work of those Team Star lackeys outside school that time, the idea for Operation Starfall suddenly came to me. My skills let me get hold of as much LP as I want, so I decided to use that to tempt you to helping me out. After the operation started, I kept an eye on you as a member of the "supply unit"… And I had you battle the bosses on my behalf. All for the goal of defeating me and putting an end to Team Star once and for all. But still…there's a part of me that wants Team Star to live on! I can't just roll over and let you win without putting up a fight! This is the final showdown. Are you ready?"
This is another point where people bring up Penny being a bad person because she was manipulative in her own goal. And yes to be fair she was underhanded but it's understandable given her backstory as to why she goes for more indirect confrontation methods. Like this is someone who doesn't like the spotlight and has struggled with confrontation. Plus she's really torn about this whole plot because the Team Star admins are her friends. She even says she doesn't really want to disband them. But she feels she has to in order to save her friends
After all, we see in the flashback once the Operation Star was a success that she tried to get them to disband to avoid further punishment. To which the others decided not to. At that point we see that she ends up taking the blame onto herself to protect her friends. This is why I don't necessarily get why people call her selfish. That's pretty unselfish to take on the blame and be willing to be sent of for a whole 18 months.
"I'm the big boss of Team Star. The name's Cassiopeia—No…Penny!"
This is another major quote that I think is underrated. You can see that she's now fighting between the two identities she holds. Cassiopeia, the enigmatic leader of Team Star and Penny her true self she's not been able to show authentically
"Time to Terastallize! Shine bright like the starry sky and become who you really want to be!"
Again this further supports the idea that after Operation Starfall, she's really wanting to be her most authentic self
The reunion (and truly first meeting) between her and the Team Star Admin is really touching to see. Her finally meeting them face to face, and them forgiving her after what she did. They realized that despite the underhanded method, she was really just trying to look out for them.
After the final showdown we see Penny own up to more of her crimes. Which she didn't have to do, but it shows that deep down she's an honorable person whose done some questionable things. And again this directly contrasts the idea that she's selfish as she could've just not owned up to hacking the LP system. Some people dislike the fact that she seems to get off easy but to be fair she already had been sent away for 18 months previously. And as much as Operation Starfall street was a lesson for Penny, it was also a lesson for Clive/Clavell who was about to straight up expel everyone involve with him learning to be more observant before taking drastic measures.
We meet Penny again in Area Zero and this is where a lot of people kind of find her interactions with Nemona and Arven to be mean-spirited. Now true she is snarky here but you can see it as a way of keeping her guard up which is something many people who have been bullied may do. Not to mention both Nemona and Arven come off strong with Nemona being a little too extroverted and not reading the room and Arven actually starts in on her first by calling her pipsqueak which would actually send her onto the defensive. I think people forget that there are three socially awkward kids meeting for the first time going into an incredibly dangerous and off-limits area. That wasn't going to be just a smooth nice interaction and again Nemona and Arven had some not-so-great moments down there as well.
To her credit Penny actually does apologize to Arven (and Arven does the same) and she has a bit more situation awareness of what was going on with Koraidon/Miraidon when they meet their very aggressive counterpart. She even actually tries to give Arven some words of sympathy once we know the true fate of the professor.
People also give her flak for her calling her father annoying for checking in on her and giving her an embarassing nickname (Pen-Pen). Yes she doesn't have it nearly as bad as Nemona or Arven, but she is a teenager. Most teenagers tend to find their parents annoying. So it's a very realistic remark from her even if she doesn't familial problems on the scale of others.
In the post-game we see her checking up on the former Team Star admins as they work to reintegrate themselves back into academy which acts as one final bit of growth for Penny. She's concerned given the reputation of Team Star and the fact that the admins are like her rather awkward. However her worries a little misplaced as despite their awkwardness, the admins are able to make a name for themselves outside of Team Star. She recognizes this herself and she ultimately stops tailing her friends knowing they'll be alright
Penny isn't perfect, but she's trying her best to change for the better. The narrative acknowledges this and that's why I really appreciate her as a character.

See VINTAGE DRESSES, PERFECTLY CURLED HAIR, AND FRESHLY PAINTED NAILS on the front lawn of #4354? That's CHLOE ASHWORTH, who has called Wisteria Lane their home for TEN YEARS. The THIRTY-THREE year old is originally from CHICAGO, IL and blows their candles out every SEPTEMBER 4TH. This VIRGO said to look like ADDISON TIMLIN and was last spotted COMING OUT OF MADAME KIM'S DAY SPA. The Fairview Herald has labeled the HOUSEWIFE as THE STEPFORD SMILER around town. From a distance they display a KIND, OBSERVANT, AND ORGANIZED demeanor. Look a little closer and you may find a NEUROTIC, SELF-DESTRUCTIVE AND EMOTIONAL person cracking under the surface. Maybe it’s the fact that a dark cloud in the form of SHE IS RELAPSING WITH HER EATING DISORDER AND IS FEELING UNFUFILLED AS A PERSON is hanging over their head. ( admin andi, 25, cst, she/her, none. )
Chloe Ashworth, a young housewife with a penchant for perfection, was born and raised in the heart of Wisteria Lane. From a young age, she was drawn to the idyllic charm of suburban life, dreaming of the day she would have a family of her own to care for. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Ethan, Chloe set out to create the picture-perfect life she had always imagined.
With her classic beauty and effortless grace, Chloe is the epitome of the quintessential housewife. Her blonde hair falls in soft waves around her face, framing her delicate features, while her brown eyes sparkle with intelligence and warmth. She carries herself with poise and confidence, always impeccably dressed and groomed to perfection.
Chloe is a study in contrasts – outwardly poised and polished, yet inwardly struggling to maintain the facade of perfection. Beneath her flawless exterior lies a woman grappling with her own insecurities and doubts, yearning for validation and acceptance. She is fiercely devoted to her family, often putting their needs above her own, but struggles to find her own voice amidst the chaos of suburban life.
As a former marketing executive turned stay-at-home mom, Chloe prides herself on running her household with military precision. From meal planning to budgeting to coordinating schedules, she approaches every task with the same meticulous attention to detail that made her a success in the corporate world.
Chloe’s husband, Ethan, is her rock and constant source of support. A hardworking and devoted husband, Ethan shares Chloe’s desire for a happy and harmonious family life, but their relationship is not without its challenges. Despite their deep love for each other, they often find themselves at odds over parenting styles and priorities.
Chloe met Audre Thompson through the neighborhood book club, where they bonded over their shared love of classic literature. Their friendship seemed idyllic on the surface, but beneath the smiles lurked hidden tensions and secrets.
CHLOE IS CURRENTLY TAKEN AND CLOSED FOR APPLICATIONS.

Hi everyone! With our plot drop being released next weekend, we thought it would be an appropriate time for a fun little task. It isn’t very writing-focused, so we hope you’ll have a good time with this. The task is to post either a graphic or a page that is Social Media inspired! This could be Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter or any other type of page, and that’s all the requirements we’re going to give you guys. If your character, for some reason, wouldn’t have a social media presence, feel free to consider it as kind of an AU. Go wild; be creative. We can’t wait to see what you guys concoct up. Once you’ve finished your graphic or page, post it and tag #doskorogotask001. Below the cut, we have some templates we have found for you if you have the program Photoshop or would like to make a page on your blog. We hope you will enjoy making these, and please feel free to make as many of them as you wish! — Do Skorogo Admins.

G, U, and H for the alphabet ask meme!
G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?
My first OTPs were from back in the day when I was in the Minecraft Story Mode fandom. Like, Jesse/Lukas or Romeo/Herobrine. I dunno which I liked better but they were both rotating in my mind 24/7 back then.
But at the moment it's Spinner/Shigaraki.
H - What is your favorite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)?
Mostly animated stuff. There's some live-action stuff in there but most of the fandoms I've been in are for animated shows or games. (i hope that's what this question refers to. It's a bit confusing)
U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
MHA - Spinner, if that wasn't obvious lol I could go on and on explaining why but it would be easier to look up "Spinner" on my blog and see the long meta-analysis posts about him that I reblogged. He is just relatable I guess (don't look too much into what that says about me lol)
Miraculous Ladybug - Chloe. Yeah, she was and still is annoying, but hey, interesting writing can make you change your mind about a character. Season 2 and 3 (except the finale) was when the writing for her character was at its best.
Minecraft Story Mode (so it will be 3 fandoms starting with M lol) - Romeo the Admin. Cool design, good voice acting. They took an interesting concept for a character and were quite creative with him

Hey Nobody! 👋 Do you do short requests if someone has an interesting prompt? Or do you know any writers that would? I have an idea for some angsty Alya Salt that I can’t get out of my head, but unfortunately I suck at writing. *Where Alya goes to a journalism 101 lecture and they happen to use her interview with Lila as an example of what not to do. “Always check your sources!”*
Alya was excited. She had been looking forward to this web seminar on journalism for weeks now. After all her efforts, she had finally managed to score access to the live lecture being run by Victoria Berger, one of her role models in the field! It had taken quite a bit of effort and she still owed Marinette her soul and a date with Adrien for using her connection to Nadja to get this chance, but it was worth it! It didn’t matter that it was the middle of the day and she should be in class right now. She wasn’t going to miss an opportunity like this.
By the time she had managed to sneak away and get the laptop set up, the lecture had already started. Luckily, she hadn’t missed too much. There was Victoria already at the stand and beginning her lecture for those who were able to attend in person. Lucky! Maybe someday Alya would be able to get there.
She grinned. She could already see it now.
“But there is one thing that can make or break any reporter.”
Alya felt her skin tingle in excitement, pen at the ready to take notes.
“Facts.” The speaker stated, continuing her lecture. “You need to have facts and information that can be verified. It’s a form of science of its own, if you think about it. Much like any scientific experiment, it has to have two things—reliability and validity. Is the information you are trying to share valid—is it true? And is the information reliable—can other people investigating the information come to same conclusion?”
How true! She nodded, jotting the notes. But of course, she knew all this already. That was why she was already so successful.
“These two things are vital, and make all the difference between your work being a legitimate news source such as Le Monde or Le Figaro…or a tabloid like the Ladyblog.”
Alya froze as a tightness started in her throat.
It was an open forum, so viewers were allowed to ask questions. And naturally, one such question came up asking for clarification on this statement about the Ladyblog. Alya felt some relief that it didn’t have to be—that someone else clearly thought highly enough of the blog to question the statement. Because…she did such great work! How could her own idol see her blog as a tabloid?
“Misinformation is actually more dangerous than people not getting information in the first place. Thanks to the Internet, misinformation is much more widespread, and reports such as the Ladyblog can spread false information with widespread consequences before accurate information can be made available.”
Wait—consequences?
“Due to reports from the Ladyblog, there have been at least three separate instances requiring documented increased police presence around the François-Dupont school.”
Wait—police? Alya gasped, feeling her stomach drop at that. But…she hadn’t noticed anything…
“The first, was when the admin of the blog accused one Chloe Bourgeois of being the city’s resident super hero. However, this was disregarding previous and well known footage of the superhero in question rescuing that very victim in the first attack. Something that was widely available, and should have been checked first before making such a claim. Rather than do so, the blogger instead chose to violate boundaries of a private citizen’s for information that was already available.”
But…that had been Chloe. And she had been expelled unfairly over it. The truth had come out in the end anyway, hadn’t it?
“The second was when the blogger made the claim that the hero might be a student at the school. This was based entirely on circumstantial evidence of a book that was obtained during an active crisis. By all counts, the book could’ve belonged to anyone and ladybug might have simply been returning it, and by taking it to use for information rather than try to return it, what the young lady did was legally theft. Perhaps even blackmail.”
That…that was just journalism! She had been seeking the truth. It…wouldn’t have really caused legal trouble, would it?
“Both of these instances involved the blogger violating privacy and ethics in order to find information that at best would be considered circumstantial and far from accurate. In order to get the information she wanted, she jumped to conclusions, went to extreme lengths, and ignored risks not only to the validity of the information she was trying to seek, but the people it could hurt, and even her own life.”
It hadn’t hurt anyone, though! It wasn’t like anything could have happened!
“What if she did find out Ladybug’s identity? People would then know who to accost. This would open up our hero to threats, violence, and harm not only from the very villain she has been attempting to protect us all from, but even criminals and regular civilians looking to gain something from it. She could have been attacked by anyone seeking this Miraculous of hers for themselves, and then not only would a young woman be grievously injured over an avoidable matter, but the city would be down a hero—if not gain another supervillain. There are risks to what we do. Consequences to what information we share. And it’s not just for ourselves. Part of being a reporter is not just knowing when to put out information, it’s knowing when not to.”
A cold feeling of dread climbed up Alya’s spine. She…she hadn’t even considered…
“Which brings us to the third incident, an interview with a student by the name of Lila Rossi. Miss Rossi is the daughter of a diplomat and a frequent traveler. To the blogger’s credit, the interview was made with the student’s permission. But that doesn’t change the fact that the interview consisted almost entirely of lies.”
If she thought her heart was in her stomach before, it had surely dropped to her knees now as she watched how they systematically disproved every single one of Lila’s claims through contradictions in her own story, contradictions when comparing her other stories, and public information that Alya could easily have found had she even tried at any point to look.
And the worst part? After having her site and her work criticized, dissected, and discredited for the world to see, it was hearing that one line. That last thing before she couldn’t take anymore and exited the web seminar, tossing the laptop to the other side of the hall she had been holed up in. That same line she had previously told Marinette when she was still so sure of herself. The one thing she hadn’t done when it came to her stance on that very issue.
“A good journalist always checks their sources.”

up until a little while ago, i was using mobile to look at your blog. when i logged on via laptop, i was pleasantly surprised at how well designed the look and theme of this blog are, bc none of that shows up on mobile! if i may ask, who designed your theme and howd they do it? it seems like you guys dedicate a lot of time (?) to this blog! thank you very much for creating this space and for doing your best to moderate opinions to be civil! you admins are great :)
Hi anon! First of all, thank you so much for the sweet words :o) Time and effort definitely do go into managing this blog, but it’s always worth it to see all the wonderful discussion go on (and occasionally get very kind and encouraging messages like yours ❣️).
The theme we’re using right now was created by Chloe at yong.co.vu / soonjuns.tumblr.com / soonjunthemes.tumblr.com 😊 Credit is given if you scroll down on the main page! Unfortunately, I don’t think the creator is active on Tumblr anymore; all of those accounts look dead, and those are the only sources I have of the original creator. The theme is actually pretty old; in fact, it’s been the blog’s theme even before I became an admin (2014?). It was also an exclusive theme for the blog! I wish I could tell you what witchcraft was used to make this beautiful theme, but I really have no idea, sorry :o(
Though, there have been small changes made to the blog. For example, the main picture of TWICE on the right used to be of another group. Long-time followers probably know what else has changed since! :o)
A part of me would like to try working with a theme creator to create a new theme for this blog, but this layout (along with so many other things about this blog) is honestly so nostalgic for me and probably for a lot of you as well. Even changing parts of the theme took me 3-4 years because I was so attached to the memories of the old blog. I don’t know if we’ll ever change the theme, but it makes me super happy to see that people still enjoy the blog’s theme, even if it’s a little old! 🥰

is that JOHN KRASINSKI? no, that’s REED RICHARDS also known by some as MISTER FANTASTIC but the world thinks he is just a SCIENTIST. if I’m not mistaken HE is THIRTY FIVE and he was NEUTRAL to the hero ban.
OOC INFO:
name/alias: chloe timezone: AWST age: 22 preferred pronouns: she/her
IN CHARACTER:
basic info
full name: reed richards face claim: john krasinski age: thirty five gender & preferred pronouns: cismale, he/him MBTI Type: Architect INTJ-A occupation: scientist aliases (if any): everyone good???? affiliations (if any): the fantastic four
1. Is your character human, mutant, metahuman, alien, inhuman, or other? If other, please elaborate:
Reed I think we are classing him as a meta human because he was given his power from a source like the meta humans were.
2. What are your characters powers/special abilities, if any?:
He a stretchy boiiiiii. He can stretch and extend any part of his body which also is called shape changing / elongation.
3. Please provide three headcanons for your character:
Reed is head over heels for Susan, he would do anything to protect her, including sacrificing himself and probably the whole world
He isn’t good with emotions, like if someone cries around him he will probably run away.
When he asked Sue to marry him he was a bloody wreck. He was nervous as hell and felt like he was going to throw up, he thought she was going to say no and honestly he doesn’t know what he would have done if she did.
4. List four personality traits (two positive and two negative) and explain how they influence your character.
Intelligent: He’s super super smart, majority of the time he is completely driven by his brain and is devoted to his work which causes him to miss out on a lot
Stubborn: When he sets his mind to something it’s almost impossible for him to change it
Protective: He will do anything for the people he loves, namely Sue, Johnny and Ben.
Cold Hearted: Due to his high IQ and lower than normal EQ, he comes across as cold hearted and like he doesn’t care, this makes a lot of people distance themselves from him when in reality he just doesn’t know how to express his emotions.
5. Provide three potential plots you’d like to explore. The admins will do our best to accommodate your plot ideas, but we can’t guarantee all requests.
Sue and Reeds wedding ( yolo it’d be cute )
Reed risking his life to save someone or multiple people ( it would show that he does actually care about others )
Super smart people team up. All the “genius” team up and create something for the city ( no idea what but it’d be sick )
character bio
Growing up Reed was an outcast because of his intelligence, people avoided him because he was smarter than them and he didn’t know how to interact with normal people, so they all thought that he was a freak. The man THRIVED in college and graduated early, pretty much instantly becoming one of the lead scientists in his field.
When he first met Sue it was like love at first sight, he didn’t know what to do and was 100% a stuttering mess around her. Then they all got their powers and he was thrown out of whack and for once in his life didn’t know what to do. Reed threw himself into his work and trying to figure out what the hell happened to them, closing himself off to everyone in the process, except for Susan who just kept pushing herself inside his bubble which is one of the reasons he loves her so much now, because she didn’t leave him.
The fantastic four were created and for a while they were better than ever, Reed and Sue were happy while also trying to plan a wedding, Johnny and Ben were constantly pissing each other off which was normal. Everything changed when the ban came into place. It tore the group apart and while Sue and Johnny left for Star City, Reed stayed in New York with Ben.
It’s been a few months and now Reed has finally made the move to Star City because life without Sue ( and Johnny ) has been crap and Reed 100% got himself into trouble a few times. He hasn't spoken to Sue or Johnny since they left, he tried to but he couldn't find a way to express his feelings about everything, thats what Sue always helped him with and without her he couldn't find the words to say..

Like Oh 2.0 - Video Call
Previous Chapter: Concert Day and Pool Party Word Count: 3,872 Summary: The girls are back in SK, but in Jeju until summer is over and life starts up again. The boys decide to video call to check up on them.
Like Oh 2.0 masterlist
while revising, i was actually debating if i wanted to keep this chapter or just scrap it. then again i thought might as well just keep it as it’s already there and use it for more character and story development. so yeah, happy reading and kthxbai, Admin Lia~
After that day the sisters spent the rest of their summer with family before splitting up and heading off to other parts of the world before meeting up Aunt Julisa in Australia. Melanie and Serena learned about the incident of the pool party and felt uncertain about the whole thing about the behavior of BamBam and Yugyeom. The sisters didn't dwell upon it as it didn't concern them. They hoped everything worked out for the group and maybe Mark's friends would learn to know how to control themselves along with IGOT7s themselves. The sisters left it up to fate as they continued their stay in Australia before returning to Seoul around mid-August.
~~~~~~~
"Jeju here we are!" Melanie cheered once she got out of the car and took in the scenery. "Taesuk, this is seriously amazing!" Taesuk laughed as he got out of the car along with Serena and Chloe in tow. "I'm glad." "I'm still surprised that you two know each other and are dating." Serena remarked as she witnessed her long time and childhood friend and Melanie's recently new friend hug one another while walking. Chloe smirked at her. "You'll get used to it." "What she says." Taesuk agreed with a laugh as he started to unload everything from the car with the help of the others as he continued to talk. "When Yeojin mentioned that she was friends with you, Jyongri noona, I didn't expect you to actually be the sister of Chaewon noona, too."
"It's because of their surname." Chloe stated with a laugh. "I told them to use the same surname." "No." The sisters answered in unison which caused the couple to laugh at their reaction. "Thanks for coming out to Taesuk's home. I didn't want to come alone." Chloe admitted as Taesuk's gasped upon hearing the real reason. "What? You told me that Jyongri noona and Chaewon noona wanted to tag along." Chloe kissed him on the cheek with a sheepish smile to console him. "I'm sorry." Melanie grinned. "Hey, you told me that you'll show me around Jeju when we first met, remember." "I did, didn't I?" Taesuk laughed upon recalling his words as the quartet made their way to the front entrance of Taesuk's home as they were greeted by his parents.
~~~~~~~
Back in Seoul GOT7 were practicing their new routine for their comeback in September and they had just begun their break. "I'll be back in an half an hour." Their choreographer informed while exiting the practice room. "This routine is more hardcore than the others." Youngjae sighed as he lied on the floor. "It fits the song we're doing it for, hyung." Yugyeom stated as he was lying across the other side of Youngjae. "Does anyone want anything to drink before our break's over?" Jinyoung asked looking at his fellow members. Everyone listed off their drinks except one. "BamBam." Jinyoung called the younger male who was too busy on his phone. "BamBam!" "Huh?" BamBam looked at the older male. "Yeah?" "What do you want to drink?" "Uh, iced americano." He answered as Jinyoung took note and left with Youngjae and Jackson to get the drinks and other things.
BamBam was preoccupied by his phone that the other members were curious. "BamBam." Jaebeom called out. "Hmm?" BamBam answered while his eyes were still on his phone's screen. "Why are you so quiet?" "I'm going through Chaewon noona's snapchat story and Jyongri noona's Instagram posts." He smiled a goofy smile, but didn't look at his members. "Did you guys know that Chaewon noona also has a tattoo. It's on her left wrist. I hadn't noticed that all this time." He switched over from Snapchat to Instagram. "And Jyongri noona got another tattoo with her friend. Noona got the sun while her friend got the crescent moon. Something about a matching tattoo." He glanced up to show them the pictures.
"They're in Jeju right now." BamBam explained as the other three glanced in his direction, but the oldest two made no move to actually come closer except Yugyeom. "Who's that?" He took a hold of BamBam's phone to examine the images better. "I wonder who this guy with Chaewon noona is? He's quite handsome standing with noona." He saw the same guy standing with Serena this time around. "Oh, he looks handsome with Jyongri noona, too. I wonder if he's a friend of theirs or one of their boyfriends." He swiped again where it was Taesuk with Chloe kissing in the background where the sisters were taking a self picture. "Never mind. He's with the the other girl. They look very good together, too."
"We shouldn't get distracted." Mark suddenly said as the trio looked over at him, but his face appeared neutral. "We should focus on our comeback." "Yeah, I agree. We should be monitoring our practices." Jaebeom agreed as he walked over to the duo and took a hold of BamBam's mobile device from Yugyeom's grasp. "I'll give this back at the end of practice, BamBam." "What about Yugyeom's phone?" BamBam protested and Jaebeom held his hand out for Yugyeom to give him his device as well. Yugyeom looked up at Jaebeom with a sligtly defiant look, but handed his to the leader. "Are you going to do the same thing for everyone else, too?"
"Yeah." Jaebeom replied without emotion as he made his way to Mark who reluctantly handed over his without saying anything, but his expression wasn't exactly thrilled as Jaebeom also placed his device within the pile and set the four hand phones to the side. "They'll be right here. Out of sight and out of mind until practice is over." He looked at his fellow members with a neutral expression. "I'll take the other three when they return, too. Fair enough?" "Yeah." The younger ones sighed as they stared at one another. "This is so boring." BamBam whined as Yugyeom deeply sighed. "I know. I didn't get the chance to see their tattoos."
~~~~~~~
Night time had fallen as Chloe, Melanie, and Serena were sleeping in the guest room whereas Taesuk was back in his own room. It was respectful for the couple to not share a room as they were not married and didn't want to cause any issues with Taesuk's parents, but that didn't mean Taesuk couldn't video chat with Chloe despite being several feet away. The sisters were okay with it as they did their own thing, but it kind of got personal when Chole would constantly giggle and comment on how cute Taesuk was being. So Melanie plugged in her earbuds and continued where she left off on another one of her Thai dramas while Serena left the room to the living room and do her own thing until she knew enough time has passed before she returned.
While the trio were asleep Melanie's phone rang waking up Serena. She lifted her head and opened her eyes while searching for the source of the sound. Serena spotted Melanie's phone lighting up and knew someone was trying to call her. She looked over at her sister, but the younger woman didn't budge. Serena was about to shake Melanie awake, but the ringing stopped. Serena went back to lying on her side when she heard the phone go off again. She groaned softly as she patted her sister awake. "Mel." The younger woman didn't stir as the mobile device continued to ring. "Lani. Your phone is ringing." Melanie groaned, but didn't wake up.
It stopped ringing a second later and Serena shook her head and tried to go back to sleep. A moment later the phone went off again and Serena decided to check the device herself. She slowly crawled out of bed and went over to where her sister's mobile device was located. Once she picked it up she saw that it was a video call from BamBam. "So late." She gave the phone a suspicious look. "Since when they have each other's contacts?" She dismissed the thought, walked away from the other sleeping figures, and answered the call although it was dark on her end. "It's late." Serena said once she saw the young male idol's face.
"Hello, noona." BamBam greeted. "Hi." "Is Chaewon noona awake?" "No. She's asleep. That's why I answered her phone." "Oh, right. What are you doing?" "Talking to you instead of sleeping." She eyed the idol. "Was there something that you wanted?" The idol laughed a bit nervously as he rubbed the back of his head. "Nothing in particular." "I see. Well, good ni-" "Wait." "Yes?" "Um, well..." BamBam trailed off as Serena let out a sigh as she glanced at the time on the top right corner. "It's four in the morning, Bam. I'm sure you're tired from practice and-" She was interrupted by another person appearing.
"Hi, noona!" Jackson greeted happily as Serena cast him a weak smile. "Hi, Jackson." "What are you doing?" Serena laughed at the question as Jackson frowned. "What's so funny?" "It's nothing. Why aren't you guys practicing or on a break or something?" "We're done with practice for today or tonight. We're just chillin' before going home." "I see. Shouldn't you guys be spending it doing something else instead of video chatting with people who are trying to sleeping?" "Uh, no." The duo answered as Serena rolled her eyes playfully. "Sure. I'ma wake up Chaewon now." Serena walked back to her sister and roughly shook her awake.
Melanie groggily turned to face her sister with half-lidded eyes. "What?" Serena held out the phone. "Call for you." "Who?" "BamBam and Jackson." "Huh?" Melanie slowly rose in an upright position as she rubbed at her face. "Why?" "I dunno, but BamBam face time you." "Face time?" "Yeah, but here." Serena handed the phone over to Melanie when the younger woman had finally woken up from her sleepy state. "Hi boys." She greeted them with a wide smile. "What's up?" The duo began talking while Serena let out a sigh as she knew she wasn't going to get any more sleep if her sister and friends were still talking.
"I'll be in the living room." Serena whispered to her sister while taking a blanket and her mobile device out to the living room and made herself comfortable on one of the sofa. Just as she had closed her eyes she felt her phone buzz before it started ringing. Serena lifted up the device and saw that it was a Skype call from Mark. "Seriously?" She wondered why he was calling her, but answered the call anyways. "Hey." She let out tiredly upon seeing the male idol smiling at her sweetly before slightly frowning. "Did I wake you?" "Technically, no, but I was about to go back to sleep though."
She softly laughed as she rose into an upright position to sit up as she ran a hand through her hair while Mark let out a sheepish laugh. "Yeah, sorry about that. I overheard BamBam chatting with you and then Melanie came on so I figured I'll video chat with you, too." "There's nothing special with talking to me, Mark." She laughed again when Mark joined in before speaking. "I beg to differ, Serena." "Whatever you say, Mark." The older woman than shot the younger man a look. "Why don't you just join Jackson with BamBam on the video chat? It would have been easier." "I could, but that's one too many people all at once" He shrugged indifferently as Serena rolled her eyes. "Okay, yeah, sure, whatever."
She let out a yawn and tried to cover it. "Maybe I should let you go." Mark told her as Serena waved him off. "It's okay. I'm on vacation so I have other days to sleep some more, but maybe I should be the one to let you go instead." "Why?" "Because you're the one that needs to sleep because of your idol schedule." "True, but I'm used to running on a few hours of sleep." "True." The two grew silent after that as both Serena and Mark glanced at one another and then elsewhere. Mark broke the silence a second later. "Um, about my friends, Serena, at the party and the concert-" He began, but Serena interrupted him. "Look, it's fine, Mark. Well, I mean, technically it isn't, but those are your friends and you aren't responsible for them."
She paused before speaking again. "I mean it's not your fault. You don't have to apologize. I can understand that they're your friends, Mark, and not mine or anyone else, but still though people should know how to control themselves." She sighed. "Honestly, don't mind me. You do you." Serena shot him a weak smile as Mark did the same, but the mood was still a bit heavy and Serena wanted to make it light again. "Anyways, that was one ugly Girls Girls Girls dance version." Mark cracked a smile before it became an embarrassed laugh. "So you watched it?" "I did, but not my choice. My sister showed me and I wished I didn't watch it. So embarrassing."
"Well, me and you both." Mark stated while rubbing his face as he was still clearly embarrassed about it. "But hey, at least you can add it with the part of your dark past like the noodle hair you dislike so much." "Please don't." "I actually liked your bird nest though." "Bird nest?" "That's what me and Mel call that hair style." "You liked it?" "Mmhmm. You're actually the only member I think that has had the best hair in each era." "So does that mean you anticipate my teasers whenever we have a comeback?" Mark asked interested as Serena laughed while shaking her head. "No. Not really." Serena missed Mark's sad expression, but he recovered it shortly.
"GOT7's not the only group I follow." Serena explained as Mark leaned closer. "What other groups do you follow?" "Whatever interests me. Like last month NCT 127 debuted and ASTRO had a comeback. This month promotions are with MONSTA X's with Stuck and EXO with LOTTO. Oh an a sub-unit of NINE MUSES A and OH MY GIRL's come back, too. There's a lot that keeps me occupy." "Ah, I see." Mark said flatly as Serena caught his tone of voice with an amused expression. "I'm a multi-fandom fangirl so GOT7's on the list, too." "At which position?" "Now that's a secret." Mark rolled his eyes, but let out a small laugh. "Alright, alright."
The idol noticed Serena yawning again. "Time to let you go, huh?" Serena glanced at the time. "It's your call, Mark." She spoke in-between another yawn. "You're the one that called me." Mark chuckled. "True, but I guess we both need some sleep." "Well, you more than me." "True." "Alright, Mark, good night." "Good night to you, too, Serena." "Sweet dreams and take care." "Sweet dreams, to you, too, Serena." "Thanks, Mark. Night." "Welcome and night again." "Yeah, and good night to you, too." She eyed the idol once he told her goodnight again. "If you're gonna hang up, then I'ma hang up for real." Mark laughed before nodding. "Okay, okay. last one. Good night, Serena." "Good night, Mark." Mark ended the call. "Little brat.".
Meanwhile during Mark and Serena's conversation Melanie continued her conversation with the other two idols. "So what's up, kids?" "Kids? Kids?" BamBam said in disbelief as Melanie chuckled. "Aight then, I'ma hang up." "That's rude." Jackson commented as Melanie eyed him with a wry smile. "It's four in the morning. Some of us usually sleep at this hour." "Oh, well excuse us for wanting to talk with our friends after practice, Chaewon noona." Jackson sarcastically responded as Melanie countered with a laughing scoff. "Psh, yeah right. You have other idol friends and probably other friends before y'all met me and unnie." "Touche."
Melanie stifled a yawn. "Should we let you go back to sleep, noona?" BamBam asked afterwards as Melanie shrugged. "That would be nice, but it's whatever. You guys still didn't tell me what you wanted though? Why did you call so late?" "Well, it's nothing in particular." BamBam stated as Melanie glared at him. "Then I'ma hang up since y'all don't really want anything and just woke me up for your own enjoyment." "Ah, wait, wait." Jackson stopped her as Melanie looked at him while waiting for him to explain. "Did you watch that clip of us?" "Which one? You guys have a lot." "The ugly version of Girls Girls Girls."
The older woman burst into small laughs while nodding. "Yeah, I did. Did you guys have fun doing that?" Both idols shrugged. "Yes and no." "Seriously, though that was unexpected." Melanie said before eyeing both males. "That's all you guys wanted to know if I watched it or what?" "Well, yeah." They answered as Melanie frown. "That's dumb. I don't get why you would care if I watched it or not." "Well, you're an ahgase and so we always care about our fans and we just wanted to check in on y'all." Jackson stated as Melanei shrugged. "I guess and I appreciate te check-in, but y'all need to sleep and rest, too." "I see."
Melanie yawned again as she rubbed her eyes. "Was that all you guys really wanted to ask me about?" "Yeah." "That's really just dumb. My opinion doesn't matter because you guys do you, man." Melanie told them as a small graced her lips. "As your fan and friend I'm gonna still like y'all and think you're a bunch of dorks." "So you do like us?" Jackson grinned as BamBam leaned closer. "But out of us two who do you like more?" Melanie playfully pondered for a bit keeping the boys in suspense as she grinned at them. "Secret." "Aww that's no fun." BamBam pouted as Jackson frowned. "I bet we're not your bias. " Melanie chuckled. "Still a secret."
"Anyways, it's late. I know you guys probably have stuff to do for the rest of the week. Get some sleep." Meanie told them as she stifled a yawn. "OK." "Alright. Well, good night boys." "You, too, noona. Thanks and good night." "You're welcome. Night." "Night." She waved them off as she ended the call first and put her phone down while rubbing her face. Melanie was thinking why they had call her about such an issue as it really didn't concern her. It's not like she was famous or had that much of an impact on their life for them to consider her opinons on them. She sighd and had settled back into bed when her phone rang again.
Melanie stared at Jaebeom's profile video calling her. "Why now when the other two just got done?" She answered anyways. "Hey, JB." She greeted upon seeing the leader's no make-up face. "Hi, noona." He smiled at her a bit sheepishly as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry for calling you so late." Melanie dismissed it. "It's all good. The other kids called, too." "Who?" "BamBam and Jackson. I just got done talking to them a while ago." "Really?" "Yeah. Bam decided to video chat with me." "What did you guys talk about?" "Nothing much really. Just asked about the ugly version of the Girls Girls GIrls clip y'all did recently."
Jaebeo groaned upon Melanie mentioning it. "Oh." "Yeah, but don't ask me. I don't wanna talk about it if you're gonna talk about it, too." "Why not?" He asked giving her a weird look as Melanie shrugged tiredly. "Because it was second hand embarrassment for me and I didn't even appear in the video." "You're lucky." Jaebum told her as silence fell between them and Melanie sat up to run a hand through her hair as her tiredness was beginning to show. "If there's something you wanna say, then just say it." Jaebeom assumed he may have annoyed her. "Sorry." "For what?" Melanie asked tilting her head not aware about the tone she had used earlier.
"You seemed annoyed just now." Jaebeom mentioned cautiously. "That's just my face." She stated as he rolled his eyes. "You're face is never annoying to look at." "I guess." Melanie laughed missing the point of how he had said the comment. "You're face's not that bad either." She admitted as his eyes widened in surprise. "Really?" "Yeah. You're an idol. You guys always have flawless skin." "Oh." Melanie then re-adjusted herself as she stifled a yawn. "Aren't you tired? Shouldn't you be asleep?" "Why? So that you can go back to sleep?" "Yeah that too." She chuckled as Jaebeom smiled. "I should, but I felt like talking to you for a little bit longer."
Melanie scoffed. "Why? I'm not that interesting, JB." "Well, I find you interesting, noona." Jaebeom told her as Melanie shook her head still wondering why he would say that. "If you say so." "By the way, when did you and Taesuk hyung become close?" He asked her a moment later as Melanie thought about his question. "We've been close since the group date." "I didn't know you guys still stayed in touch after that." "Why wouldn't we? He's a cool guy. He reminds me of my brothers back home." "Ah, you mean the guys you mentioned that you grew up with, right?" "Mmhmm. It's just easier to say."
"So why are you in Jeju?" He asked and Melanie was wondering why he was asking her questions about Jeju. "Our friend, Yeojin, is dating Taesuk. She asked us to tag along with them so that it wouldn't be too awkward." "Really? Taesuk hyung hasn't told me anything about him dating anyone." "Because you're busy." "Probably. So, when are you coming back?" "Hmm, dunno. We're just hanging around for now since the other two are free. So maybe just a few days before school starts." "Ah." Melanie tilted her head with a curious expression. "Why do you ask?"
Jaebeom shrugged. "No reason." Melanie noticed that he hasn't been disturbed by the other members since they've been talking. "Where are the others?" Jaebeom looked around him before returning his gaze back onto Melanie. "Around. I lost track once practice was over." He laughed sheepishly as Melanie shook her head. "Must be tough to watch them six kids." "It was easier when I was an only child. I didn't have to worry about anything." Melanie laughed as Jaebeom continued to talk. "Still, it's nice having them around." "It's good having good company with you." "I agree. You're good company, noona." "Thanks. So are you." "I know." "Wow."
Melanie yawned again and Jaebeom noticed. "We should sleep." "You sure?" Melanie asked letting out another yawn and Jaebeom chuckled. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure. Schedules start up again in several hours." "I see. Hopefully I'll be able to fall back to sleep." Jaebeom frowned. "Will you be able to?" "I dunno. I'll find out when the call ends." "Should I sing you a lullaby?" Melanie smiled. "Actually, that sounds nice. Yes, please." Before she knew it she heard Jaebeom singing a song she didn't recognize. Within seconds she fell asleep as he continued to sing while watching her sleeping form. He hung up a few seconds later with a sweet smile.
My Online Communities
It’s no secret that although Facebook is the most popular social networking site with over 2.3 billion active users, and was once the must have social media site, it has kind of become synonymous with middle-aged women over-sharing, re-runs of the same old Tasty videos, and pretty much just ad-central. Though one of the longest standing social networks and clearly the front runner when it comes to longevity and popularity, the site is full of affordances and constraints, with the majority of them, constraints as many argue that Facebook is pretty outdated - but I’m here to argue the opposite. I have more recently become aware of some of the innovative ways people have adapted Facebook’s widespread “popularity” - as let’s face it, it’s hard to find anyone under the age of 50 that doesn’t have their own Facebook account. And though young people may argue that this is a huge constraint (because who wants their nosey Auntie spying on their every move?) the fact that people of all ages, from all walks of life is actually, when it comes to online communities, is a huge affordance.
Facebook is being adapted in really innovative ways to keep up with the times and provide us with communicative tools to achieve things that were never before possible. Pretty deep? Yes. True? Absolutely.
If you think I’m being a bit vague - I’m talking about online communities. Boyd and Ellison (2008) stated that social networking sites are “web based service[s] that allows individuals to... articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system.” As soon as I read this I was reminded that I myself, am a member of three specific “online communities” in particular, each with their own very different purposes.
These groups and the media they share are rich in content, with the ability to react to posts, use polls and of course emojis, restricting the constraint of context and allow users to communicate how they are feeling with almost no ambiguity: this in itself has affordances and constraints - because I don’t think many people would be too pleased with a “sad” or “angry” react on a personal post, or a “haha” react on a sad story - so this can bring problems, but these are in the small minority. These little “reacts” are a great tool to eliminate the constraint of contextualisation and are used in my online communities consistently.
GIRLSMOUTH
Now girls, if you haven’t heard of this one, let me tell you, you’re missing out on some top quality entertainment. In a nutshell, Girlsmouth is a private Facebook group that is strictly girls only. At the time of writing this, the group has 171,146 members, consisting of four admins and six moderators, who monitor the comments of posts they have approved to ensure that there is no selling, promotion, or horrible comments being made. The “founder” of the group, Chloe Todd, describes the group as;
“an empowering support group for women to bring females together rather than bash each other. #girlpower 💁🏼”
Tumblr media
The purpose of the group is for members to post for advice, gain support and build relationships with one another. All women are welcome which means that the posts come from women all over the globe, wealthy or struggling, young and old. An example of a post made today is below, within an hour already 28 people have commented offering advice, regardless of the transaction costs of the “conversation” and of over 170,000 people having the ability to see and judge them on their advice and experiences:
Tumblr media
On the whole, the group is very supportive and many members have actually built real life friendships as a result of coming in contact on the site. It is not uncommon for women to post their struggles - whether that be regarding their health, relationship  or financial struggles, and many will come to their aid, offering support and even in some examples, a place to stay, money to tide them over and offerings of friendship to people at their lowest points.
Tumblr media
After being on the group for a while, you start to recognise names and faces and become familiar with people’s stories and struggles and even become a bit invested in some of the stories - a particular stand-out story to me is a girl that has been in hospital for over 13 months now, who has been sharing her story and the challenges shes faced.
Not all the stories are inspirational and moving, and to be honest, this is what I love most about this online community. When trying to find examples of posts to add it took me over thirty minutes to find at least five acceptable ones for an academic blog: I’m talking posts that didn’t mention polls on sexual encounters, disgusting flat mates and family meltdowns and every swear word in the book. As well as these, random questions about people’s favourite foods and make-up are regular features, but that’s all part of life too and really reiterates the idea that people come to Girlsmouth looking to connect and relate to others. I can guarantee now matter how wild or weird your story or post, there will be a group of women on Girlsmouth ready to relate to you. And that’s what makes Girlsmouth so great at what it does - and a huge source of entertainment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In summary, Girlsmouth is pretty much the best procrastination there is. But aside from that, it reminds us that whilst social media may be full of unattainable goals - whether this be in our appearance, holidays, relationships of financial situations, at the end of the day, we are all just human, and we could all do with a bit of advice and support sometimes - even if it is just about which Diet Coke tastes best (which is obviously full fat instead...)
READING WOMEN WALKING HOME
Tumblr media
The second online community I am part of is a pretty new development, and if you live in Reading (which considering this is a university blog, is all of you) you need to join this group. With 2538 members, including University of Reading security team member Steve, this group was created with the purpose of warning other women about the strange and worrying behaviour of members of the public to ensure we can all stay safe. Unfortunately, there are multiple new posts daily, with women experiencing harassment, break-ins and burglaries on a daily basis.
Some may argue that this group does nothing but scaremonger, possibly stating that ignorance is bliss, as they say - but I couldn’t disagree more. As women it is our duty to stand together in the face of such adversities, and in a world where we are at risk simply from walking home from a lecture in the middle of the day, no precaution is too much. This feeling of support and community is exactly what we need when facing these issues.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, this support group is not just something that is happening at our university. The group was inspired by The Tab newspapers article on another “Women Walking Home” group chat. As well as a page for women to join, there is also a Facebook messenger group chat in which members are encouraged to message if they feel unsafe so another member can ring them on their walk home in another selfless offering of support, between women with weak and strong ties alike. Some may argue that this group isn’t entirely inclusive because it is heavily orientated towards females, but this doesn’t stop the group from being an online community, as these are defined as a tool to enable users to “ articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection” (Boyd and Ellison, 2008) as aforementioned, and typically, males don’t get approached in this way. Males are present on the group as I have mentioned, in the form of the university security team. In fact, them joining the group could be a positive step, so that they are aware of what is going on, but this could also be negative as this could allow the members of the public who are engaging in this behaviour to become aware of the location of users and thus perpetuate the problem. So, in some cases, being inclusive of both genders is not of upmost importance.
This online community and utilisation of social media is a huge affordance of Facebook and social media, showcasing an amazing and innovative way to use the sites to stay safe. It’s also a great example of the constant development of social media and how we can use these advancements in everything we do. Which begs the question, is Facebook really as outdated and boring as everyone says?
LOST AND FOUND PETS IN BRISTOL/SOUTH GLOS
Tumblr media
Finally, a group I have been a member of for a few years now: Lost and Found Pets in Bristol/South Gloucestershire. This group really epitomises the affordances of social media for me. With 30,208 members, this group is responsible for re-uniting thousands of lost, found and stolen pets with their owners, as well as re-homing pets with no where to go. The idea behind it is simple.
Lost an animal? Found an animal?
Simply post a picture, location or description and the tens-of-thousands of members will get to work for you.
Due to the longevity of the group, members and admin have a great relationship with one another, and its a recipe for success. Admin are aware of members and their location so that when an animal or pet goes missing or pops up in their area, someone can be on site ASAP. It really is as simple and effective as that. The admins are so invested in the page that they have been known to recognise pets that have gone missing years prior when their little furry face pops up on their feed - with one cat and owner being re-united after eight years! EIGHT! This group proves that miracles really can, and do, happen.
Never have I lost a pet (thank goodness) but the sheer thought of losing my dogs motivated me to join this group to ensure that if I ever do, I know that 30,000 people in Bristol are aware of it almost instantaneously and can assist in my search, with success. In 2015, 7000 pets were reunited with their owners from the group alone - even pets with no microchip are often re-united purely from the work of this group! If that doesn’t convince you that Facebook can be used for good, I don’t know what can. I think that it is a priceless and hugely innovative way to use social media - gone are the days of soggy “LOST” posters stapled to lamp-posts and trees and loss of reunion hope.
In summary, These communities are characterised by their complex nesting structure but this complexity and structure is what makes these groups so diverse, and so great: the variety of connections made possible by these communities is unparalleled. The media richness and participant framework within these groups, one many times a global level, allows users to be bound together by a common interest, concern or topic and though they may have no personal relationship with other users, referred to as weak ties, this factor doesn’t restrict their capacity to offer advice or engage in conversation, with mavens: who are people with access to things that are beneficial to others, and connectors: people who act as bridges for the facilitation of these things, working together to achieve positivity, costly or not.
These communities are the future of Facebook.
Dunbar’s number, who? We have thousands of online friends now.
Marking the end of the Warrior Run stadium in a unique way NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. — A school district in Northumberland County came up with a unique way to mark the last time their stadium will be used. Warrior Run is getting a new athletic stadium so organizers put together a cow pie event on Saturday. Cows were released at the fifty-yard line. The first cow pie dropped on a grid-line number assigned to a ticket holder won that person $500. In an effort to be pandemic-friendly, the event was live-streamed on social media. “Once we said, we we’re going to try this, everyone’s been so supportive at the school, between our faculty, our staff, our admin, and even the community with buying the tickets,” said Chloe Sees, a substitute teacher for the district. Groundbreaking for the new stadium is set to happen next week. All the money raised at Saturday’s event will go to the Warrior Run High School Faculty Scholarship in Northumberland County.
