Headcanon (Contemporary/21st Century AU): How Aemond Targaryen would support you his s/o as you prepare to take the bar exam.

This is a special request from a few friends of mine (and fellow Aemond simps) who will soon be lawyers as they take the first part of the bar exam tomorrow (YOU CAN DO IT GUYS!). This is just a small contribution, but I hope it will boost your morale.

You don't remember how you became a couple. Life as a law student almost seemed like a blur compared to what everyone else is doing with their lives. When everything seemed to mainly revolve around your textbooks, case studies, and legal provisions, you were happy to even be able to do anything outside of it all even just for a little while.

You were in your favorite café on the outer area of the main mall with at least three books on front of you. A textbook, another textbook by a different author who had contrasting opinions, and the huge block of legal provisions with your notes on the margins and almost every available space. Your vertical pencilcase containing pencils, a sharpener, three fountain pens, and two highlighters of contrasting colors. To someone who wasn't in the pursuit of the legal profession this would look messy. But to any other fellow student, this was organized. Your notebook on your lap and your gadgets close by if you needed to quickly search something.

You caught his eye first, looking back you wondered if it was all a mere coincidence but to you back then it was a happy little accident. You both ordered the same drink, you had requested yours to have no sugar or at least the minimal amount as possible. He had accidentally drank it since he ordered the same thing. He offered to give you his as an apology. You accepted initially for the sake of social diplomacy, but that led to him being curious about the study material that was spread out on the table.

At first you were hesitant. He was a stranger for one, and two anyone who wasn't a law student asked questions such as when you would graduate and if you could help them out by giving your legal advice (you begin to prepare the pre-done speech you have in your mind to clarify that anything you would say should not be taken as legal advice and to consult a lawyer just to be certain). To your delighted surprise after the initial introductions (and assuring him that you didn't mind his eyepatch) he genuinely was curious with what you were studying. And this lead to your first talk together, an exchange of phone numbers and contact details before he volunteered to also bring you home since by the time you've realized it was late, it was an hour before the café would close and getting a ride to commute back home was on the more expensive side.

To your surprise he had a driver's license. He explained that with his remaining eye he could still drive and more than surpassed his older brother who had both eyes but had at least one car accident per year. You give him the address that was near enough to your house just outside of your neighborhood. But he wouldn't be able to tell where you actually lived. A safety measure, just in case it turned out he had ill will and was a creep who was better off not knowing your actual house address. It was one thing to give your number and your viber/telegram accounts. It's another for him to know where you lived.

That was the start of a relationship with an intense, passionate, crazy, calculated person. All of these with both the good and the bad aspects. But by the time you've graduated, he was there with your friends and family. Teasing you that he also helped you with studying the law. There was truth in that, since he was in the unique position of being intelligent enough to aid you in your studies yet also being a layperson who was still outside of the legal education system and understood when you needed a break, or when you needed to be pushed when you felt like giving up.

"This is your last challenge. And I have no doubts you will make it."

He tells you the week before you begin your intensive withdrawal from social media to prepare for the bar exam that you will soon endure.

"That means a lot coming from you. You're just as much of a bookworm and serious academic as any of my professors."

"Which is why I say this to you." He leans in close, your noses almost touching.

"If you can't believe in yourself, then believe in my faith in you. You know that I have no problems berating and saying what I think even to the people close to me. I have seen your growth, and how you've overcome many challenges. This is the last one, and I believe you shall prevail."

You both lean in for a kiss, and in it you felt reassured even though you had doubts. In times that count, Aemond was right. This is the last challenge of your journey, and compared to what you had to go through for many years, if he had faith in you, then you can have faith in yourself that you could make it.

I think @heynhay's original idea of Keith & Lance working together at the same firm is best. For both plot reasons but also for my own morale LOL

So everyone works at a fairly large private firm that splits its practice and has some of its associates doing profit-driven law (i.e. corporate or finance) which subsidizes the public interest/service work that the other associates do.

The firm is like "Altea & Daibazaal LLP" or something. Yes I am implying that the firm was started by Alfor and Zarkon. Yes I am implying that Allura and Lotor are nepo babies.

I know I originally said that Keith and Lance were law school rivals but I've changed my mind... (RIP to the law school rivalry dynamics

Instead I'm making it so that Keith and Lance are the same age but Lance has been practicing longer because he went straight into law school after college. Whereas Keith started working after college and got like a Master's degree in Social Work or something before deciding on law school at 26. (I just think Keith is the kind of person who goes to law school later in life.)

Okay onto the specific Klance dynamics... Keith and Lance are both pushing 30 and are also literally lawyers so they are professional and serious about their work... But there is wiggle room for them to still be rivals :p

Lance and Keith are both junior associates at the firm. Lance has seniority because he's been at the firm longer but he's still a year or so away from formally becoming a senior associate.

Lance really, REALLY wants to make partner and he sees Keith as his biggest threat/rival because Keith is Shiro's little brother, and Shiro recently made partner at the firm, so Lance thinks Keith might be a nepo hire. Also some of the senior associates recently left the firm so now Lance is stuck showing Keith the ropes and he's lowkey super bitter about it.

Basically TLDR Lance starts off Not Liking Keith at all for various real or imagined reasons and begins a work rivalry with him. Keith doesn't actually GAF about making partner because he's only planning on working at the firm for a few years to help pay off his student loans, but Lance doesn't know that. However, Keith is a naturally very competitive person, and he also likes having Lance's attention, so Keith immediately goes all in on the rivalry.

Lance, internally: "This Fucking Guy."

Keith, internally: "I am so good at flirting."

The first few months are rough between them. However both are also incredibly productive in their work.

The romcom part of the AU kicks in once the two of them have to start working together on a huge high stakes civil case and they're both like wow.... *twirls hair* he's so competent.............. <3

Anyway misc. things:

TBH I have no idea what kind of law Keith and Lance might private practice... I'm also really torn on what Shiro, Allura, and Hunk would practice hdjsksdhedf

Pidge is hired on a fellowship for either environmental law or data security/privacy law.

Coran does employment law.

Keith went into law school planning on going into public interest/not-for-profit legal aid and swore he would never, ever do corporate law but then he saw his student loans and was like. Hm. Okay maybe some Biglaw is okay. And that's how he ended up at the firm.

Keith:

When Obi-Wan just blinks at him again, mouth slightly open, Anakin huffs as if he’s being difficult on purpose. “I want to stay married to you.” “What?” Anakin has the nerve to roll his eyes as if this isn’t incredibly jarring news. “I mean, I’m assuming you can’t be the divorce lawyer in our divorce, right?” Obi-Wan’s lips thin. “Yes, that would be—” “A conflict of interest, right,” Anakin waves his hand through the air. “And I’m assuming you’re not very interested in one of your coworkers knowing that you fucked me and married me during a drunk night out in Las Vegas.” “I’m much more interested in that than I am in staying married, Mr. Skywalker,” Obi-Wan snaps, even as he realizes how uninterested he is in his coworkers finding out about this. Who would he trust to be tight-lipped about the whole thing? Cody perhaps, but there’s no way Cody wouldn’t tell his brother. And there’s no way his brother wouldn’t tell everyone else. And Vos, his other partner? Absolutely unthinkable. “Don’t call me that,” Anakin replies. His lips tilt up into a grin, as if he’s finding something incredibly entertaining but this current situation. “Too formal for you now? Am I supposed to feel obligated to only call you by your first name now that you’ve had your tongue dow my throat?” Obi-Wan asks in his most withering tone. Anakin’s cheeks light up, as if he isn’t a man who spends half his time in other people’s beds doing much more explicit things. “No,” Anakin says. “Call me by my last name all you want, it’s just that it’s not Skywalker anymore.” He flashes a devastating smile in Obi-Wan’s direction. “It’s Kenobi.”

i hate complicated feelings surrounding chapter six ( aka the introduction to the iconique ravesey hate that i deleted from stress ) because i actually did love it...i just rushed the hell out of it, didn't plan it out very well and it was a mess. it could have been a lot better.

part of why i deleted it was actually because of that ravenstan/kenny phonecall because i felt worried that i revealed too much about how not cool and actually boy-failure-y stan was too early and could have kept the suspense going longer but aaaaaa i just wanted y'all to see how CUTE he was, like??? and how nervous! AAAA!!!

buuut considering the cat has been out of the bag, or rather, the raven has flown the nest for some time now...and it's the beauteous day you were born...i will humbly present you with this b-day present in the form of my incompetent idiot girl ramblings/writings, though, i fear it is not at all as grand the gift of your life is.
