3. which muse would be the best parent?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mmm, it's a tie between Somi, and Aizawa. They both have a background in dealing with children, Somi has raised quite a few and Aizawa has been teaching for nearly as long as he's been a hero, so they both know how to care for children. But Somi takes the win because she's just mom.

Skin-Deep chapter 12
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: The one where you fall for Seungcheol amongst all the protests and insecurities. The one where you don't know that he's fallen for you too.
a/n: Enjoy! :)
Ensconced in a velvet armchair, you sat surrounded by your friends who were howling with laughter.
“They said what?” Yunjin said in between tears, clutching her stomach from the pain of laughing too hard.
“I cannot FATHOM anyone saying that to you,” Shuhua cried, wiping the tears from her eyes, trying her best not to smudge her mascara.
“God, what is up with her ceiling?” Somi laughed, imagining a bunch of naked people on the ceiling, “New money people, I can never understand.”
“Talk about bad taste, who the fuck puts stained glass in their dining room?” Jihyo added, sipping on her tea.
You had just finished relaying the drama from the past month to your friends whilst jewellery shopping at your favourite store. The five of you sat facing one another with a bucket load of jewellery spread out on a coffee table in the middle. The shop assistants constantly bringing out all of their best jewellery for each of you to inspect.
“You should have slapped her!” Shuhua commented, mimicking a slapping motion in the air. “I know I would have! Insulting my bestie like that.”
Shuhua was your most outspoken friend. Her father was renowned as the Grocery King of Taiwan, owning almost all of the supermarkets and groceries store in the country. She always made sure to send out boxes of the best fruits and vegetables to her best friends. Their mothers appreciating the present more than any of their daughters.
“And his father! ‘You need a right girl by your side’.” Jihyo mimicked, “Go back to the 70s, old man! No one wants you here!”
Jihyo, who was extremely appaled by backwards thinking, was the daughter of the Gold Kingdom. Her family held monopoly over the trade of gold globally. Jihyo was regularly decked out in gold, but she didn’t mind shopping for other sorts of jewellery.
“How does your son’s choice of girlfriend affect your company’s survivability?” Somi said, rolling her eyes, “does he know nothing about business?”
Somi, your ever business savvy friend, had just returned from completing her MBA. This was to prepare her to inherit her mother’s massive cosmetics empire. In fact all the makeup on your face right now was a gift from Somi.
“I literally just looked up their company while you were talking. They’re worth what? 20 bil?” Yunjin turned her phone to show you a report. “And they’re so bloody arrogant!”
Yunjin, who was more interested in people’s net worths, hailed from a family who ran the world's most successful banking co-operation. This grants her access to all the secretive reports of various companies and high net worth individuals around the world.
Where Seungcheol had Joshua and Jeonghan, you had Shuhua, Jihyo, Somi and Yunjin.
The five of you had been friends since you were children, your parents all knew each other so naturally you grew up together. Majority of your youth was spent flying all over the world for shopping trips and holidays together. The only reason you separated was because you wanted to experience life without your parent’s money for once. You’d regularly keep up with them while you were at uni but it wasn’t the same as seeing them face to face. You missed the support your girlfriends gave you after being surrounded by boys for months.
“Guys, it’s honestly fine.” You said, holding your hand up to the light, inspecting the massive diamond around your finger. “I’ve left and I’m not looking back. That part of my life is over.”
“Which part of your life is over?” A voice sounded from behind you.
“Vernon!” Your friends chorused.
Your brother, waltzed up to the table. Giving each one of your friends a wave.
“Oh, you’re here early.” You said, placing the ring back on the table. Large stones attracted unwanted attention, not your taste.
“Yea, we should probably leave now, you know how mom and dad get when we’re late.” Vernon said, motioning to the door.
You sent your friend’s an apologetic smile, “Sorry guys, let’s continue another day?”
A wave of goodbyes came from your friends as you and your brother left the shop, his Mclaren Senna parked at the main doors.
Once you were comfortably seated in the car, you began running through your activities for the night.
“After dinner, are we going over to Gyu’s place?” You said, your freshly manicured nails tapping against your phone.
“Yea, it’s just going to be the few of us I think.” Vernon answered, driving carefully around a crowd who was snapping photos of his car.
“How long do you think dinner with mom and dad will be?” You questioned, still replying to messages on your phone.
“Probably like 2 hours tops? We might be a lil’ late to Gyu’s place.” Vernon replied, “Gosh, sis, your nails are giving me a headache.”
You turn to your brother with an evil grin. You reached your hand out and grabbed his arm, digging your nails into his skin.
Vernon yelped. “HEY! I’m driving!”
“That’s what you get for being annoying,” You say with a smirk before continuing to tap on your phone.
Vernon’s eye twitched the entire ride home.
Tumblr media
You hopped out of the car and skipped up the steps of the front porch. Vernon trailing behind you with hands in his pockets.
“Young sir, young madam.” The maid had come out to greet the two of you, bowing as you passed her. “Dinner is ready.”
“Thanks!” You called out over your shoulder and made your way to the dining room.
This bungalow was your parent’s most recent acquisition. It had gone on the market quite recently, some Duke who had fallen from grace was looking to make a pretty penny so he sold it to your mom. She had been eyeing the property for awhile now, claiming that she thought about you immediately when she saw the massive walk-in closet in the main bedroom. It was added to the list of properties you were set to inherit when you were older.
In the dining room, your parents sat next to each other at a sensibly sized round table.
“Hi mommy,” You say as you gave her a side hug. Your mother gave you a kiss on your cheek before continuing to read her magazine.
“Hi daddy,” Doing the same to your father who was immersed in his newspaper.
“Mom, dad.” Vernon greeted with a nod.
“Oh finally the two of you are back, we’ve been waiting forever.” Your mother said, putting away her magazine as she peered at her children from the top of her reading glasses.
“Your mom’s just hangry.” Your dad flashed you a mischievous smile, ignoring his wife’s warning glare.
The maid entered with a trolley of food, proceeding to lay it out on the lazy susan. You much prefer these sort of meals than all those pretentious fine dining restaurants. Food was meant to be simple and identifiable, some people clearly did not understand that.
Dinner was filled with idle chatter, you father was talking about the new venture he was thinking of in Thailand while your mom updated her children on the coming events they had to attend.
“Aunty and Uncle Yoon are coming to town to visit.” Your mother announced. “I expect both of you to make yourselves available.”
“Sure mom,” you and Vernon chorused.
“I think they’re bringing their son eh?” Your dad said in between mouthfuls of rice. “Maybe you two could show him around.”
And that is how you found yourself face to face with the one and only Yoon Jeonghan.
“Y/N my dear!” Mrs Yoon gushed, holding your hands, “Every time we see you, you get prettier and prettier!”
“This is Jeonghan, my son. I don’t think the three of you have met.” Mr Yoon said, gesturing to Jeonghan who was currently giving you a shit-eating grin.
“Y/n!” Jeonghan cried, giving you a hug.
“Hannie!” You quickly returned his hug, you weren’t expecting to see Jeonghan at all. “This is my brother, Vernon.”
Vernon politely shook Jeonghan’s hand, exchanging quick greetings.
“Oh? Have you met y/n?” Mrs Yoon asked her son.
“Yes, we met at uni.” Jeonghan said, giving his mom a reassuring smile.
“Ok, we’ll leave you kids alone now!” Your mom said, giving your arm a squeeze.
“Unless you guys want to sit through a meeting with us?” Your dad offered.
The three of your faces contorted into a look of disgust.
“I think we’ll pass.” Vernon said, scrunching up his face.
Jeonghan waited until his parents disappeared from the room before giving you an excited look.
“So this is where you were the whole time!” He chirped. “I thought you had been kidnapped when you fell off the face of the earth like that.”
Vernon narrowed his eyes at Jeonghan, “Is this the guy you were telling me about?”
You shook your head, “No, this is his friend.”
“Ah,” Vernon crossed his arms, giving Jeonghan a disapproving look. “Guilty by association.”
Jeonghan chuckled nervously, “I promise I’m harmless.”
Vernon continued to eye the older man suspiciously.
“I’m sorry for disappearing like that, Hannie.” You sighed. “Trust me if I had it my way I would have said good bye first.”
“Hey, it’s fine.” Jeonghan waved a hand, dismissing your apology. “If that happened to me, I would leave too.”
“Did you guys hear about what happened?” You asked, wondering if Seungcheol was the type to gossip.
“Not in the way you’re thinking.” Jeonghan quickly replied, as if reading your mind. "Shua had to pay some people to find out.”
“Oh,” You paused, “Why didn’t you just ask Seungcheol?”
“I-,” Jeonghan paused, glancing wearily in the direction of your parents. “Let’s not talk about it here. There’s a lot I need to update you on.”
Tumblr media
The three of you found yourselves having tea at the Mariott. You had called up Mingyu beforehand, who insisted on coming as well, to secure a table.
“Mingyu’s on his way?” Jeonghan said, excited that he finally got to see his friends in their natural habitat.
“Yup, there he is now.” Your eyes darted to your best friend who jogged into the restaurant.
“Have you started?” Mingyu said breathlessly, “Tell me you guys haven’t started.”
“No, bro, sit down.” Vernon gestured to the chair before making a face. “You’re sweaty as fuck.”
“Gym.” Mingyu replied still clad in gym clothes, he wiped the sweat off his forehead before sitting down.
“Alright, now that we’re all here,” Jeonghan began, leaning forward, “you should know, Cheol hasn’t been himself these days.”
He recounted all the events that happened, starting from the day you and Seungcheol broke up and all the way to them confronting him at his apartment.
You didn’t know how to feel. Part of you was happy that Seungcheol was just as upset as you, part of you was sad because you knew things between you and him would never go back to normal. Was he considering getting back together with you? Did you want to get back together with him?
“It’s great he’s suffering and all. But that doesn’t give him the right to be an asshole.” Mingyu voiced out. His eyed the table of sweets in front of him as if he was strategising for war.
“Why didn’t he talk to y/n first before disappearing and breaking up with her?” Mingyu continued with a look of contempt.
“Because he’s an idiot.” Jeonghan replied, in between mouthfuls of pastries. “Not an excuse, I know.”
“I think you two should have a proper conversation,” Vernon sipped on his tea.
“Well obviously not you,” He gestured to his sister, “I mean like he should have a conversation with you.”
“Yeah, well.” You shrugged, “I want to talk to him, but he’s clearly intent on keeping me out of his life so-”
“When we told him about well, you.” Jeonghan gestured to you and his surroundings, “He looked really relieved.”
You placed a Madeleine into your mouth and looked out the window, lost in thought. In the background you could hear Mingyu arguing with Vernon and Jeonghan.
Mingyu rolled his eyes, “Honestly, I don’t trust Seungcheol on this. If you ask him to choose between y/n and his family, who would he choose? My money is on his family.”
“Actually, I think it would be y/n.” Jeonghan said with conviction. “You should have seen him. It was like armageddon had arrived on the choi family home.”
“I don’t know the guy, but I think he would choose you, sis.” Vernon said, nodding vigorously.
a/n2: I'm actually quite unsatisfied with quality of my writing. but i hope you all enjoyed it all the same.

06 ⸺ LISA'S BIRTHDAY
warnings: minor manipulation, language, mentions of alcohol, toxic behavior
word count: 1.8k
part of the series: LOGICAL
Tumblr media
lisa’s birthday party was supposed to be something worth smiling about. however, a permanent frown seemed to be etched onto Y/N’s face from the moment they arrived.
the bass boosted and the young point guard swirled the red solo cup in her hand, watching as her girlfriend stood in a circle with chaeyoung and a few of the other girls from the volleyball team. lisa’s arm was wrapped around the blonde’s shoulders in a lazy fashion, laughing at whatever comment chaeyoung just made.
the vibrant lights that adorned the party venue cast shifting shadows across her face as she observed the scene before her. her eyes, usually filled with a sparkle, now held a glint of hurt and confusion.
lisa had been the center of Y/N's world for what felt like an eternity.
ever since they were paired up on the first day of training freshman year, lisa was the only thing she could focus on.
the way she talked, the way she walked, the way she breathed next to her in bed when she slept, and even the way she smelled after a shower.
lisa was not just her life, she was everything in her life as well.
from morning practices to late night lifting sessions, Y/N was always around her girlfriend. it was a different dynamic having her cousin on the same team as her girlfriend, and with her mom as the coach. but Y/N found it somehow endearing, finding comfort in the fact that she got to share the well loved sport in her family with the love of her life.
when they were on the court, lisa’s attention was always on Y/N. every pass and play consisted of the two working together and being each other’s right hands. there wasn’t a single win in YGU’s books that was done without the efforts of the two girls.
however, once they were off the court, it was a different story.
chaeyoung was the reason Y/N felt like she was third wheeling in her own relationship.
park chaeyoung, with her blonde hair and effortless beauty, had effortlessly woven herself into lisa's life after they met in different classes they had together.
from the sidelines, Y/N had watched their friendship blossom over the years. at first, it was endearing—a friendship between two athletes, something that seemed innocent enough. but as time passed, Y/N couldn't help but notice the subtle shifts in dynamics whenever chaeyoung was around.
her girlfriend was an entirely different person around the volleyball player.
lisa's laughter would ring a little louder, her smiles a touch brighter when in the blonde’s company. they shared inside jokes, lingering gazes, and an inexplicable closeness that left Y/N feeling like an outsider in her own relationship.
while Y/N had never caught the two in any compromising situations, the unease had settled in her mind like an unwelcome guest. the innocent interactions between them often stirred a whirlwind of doubt and insecurity within Y/N.
she found herself second-guessing every conversation, dissecting every smile exchanged between her girlfriend and the blonde.
to be frank, it was driving Y/N insane.
there were numerous fights about it, both somi and yena being witnesses to the hours of yelling and shouting. lisa always insisted nothing was going on, but Y/N could not believe that.
not entirely, at least.
it wasn't jealousy, not entirely. it was the lingering fear of losing the person who meant the world to her.
the young girl’s heart ached with the weight of uncertainty, the constant worry that perhaps lisa's connection with chaeyoung ran deeper than mere friendship, even if her girlfriend would never admit it.
the point guard was drawn out of her thoughts when yena took a seat next to her on the couch, sighing dramatically as she pulled her roommate in for a side hug.
“what’s that look for?” yena asked over the music, already knowing the answer was standing 10 feet away.
the brunette forced a smile, trying to mask the tumult of emotions raging within her. “nothing really. just enjoying the party,” she replied, the words tasting bitter in her mouth as she tried to feign enthusiasm.
her roommate arched an eyebrow, her gaze piercing through the facade Y/N was desperately trying to uphold. she never understood why she still tried to hide the obvious from her.
 “yeah right,” she retorted knowingly. “i can practically see the storm clouds hovering over your head from here.”
sighing softly, Y/N leaned in closer to yena, her voice barely audible above the music. “it's lisa and chaeyoung,” she confessed, her words laced with a mixture of frustration and vulnerability.
yena's expression softened, understanding dawning in her eyes as she cast a glance towards the duo engaged in conversation across the room. “ah, those two,” she remarked, her tone tinged with empathy. “they've been inseparable lately.”
“it's driving me crazy,” Y/N confessed, her voice filled with a hint of resignation. “i feel like i'm constantly second to her. it's not like lisa can’t have friends, but this just feels different.”
yena nodded in understanding, her hand offering a comforting squeeze to Y/N's shoulder. “have you talked to the demon about how you're feeling?” yena asked gently, her concern still evident even in her sarcastic tone.
“yes, and it ends the same way every time.” the point guard huffed, taking an angry sip from her drink before grimacing at the taste.
the girl next to her chuckled before taking the cup from her hand and setting it on the nearby table. “okay, enough of that.” yena’s figure stood up, dragging the other girl with her.
she was determined to take matters into her own hands. “alright, time for operation confrontation,” she announced with faux enthusiasm, her smirk betraying her playful intent.
before the other girl could protest or comprehend what her roommate meant, yena grabbed her hand and pulled her up from the couch. without giving Y/N a chance to object, yena guided her through the crowd, weaving through dancing bodies until they reached where lisa and chaeyoung stood engaged in conversation.
lisa's eyes met Y/N's for a brief moment, but before any meaningful exchange could happen, yena intervened with calculated boldness.
 “yo lisa, happy birthday!” she shouted, her tone laced with faux enthusiasm. she knew lisa was drunk enough to not comprehend the difference.
lisa blinked in surprise, momentarily taken aback by yena's sudden interruption. “uh, thank you,” she replied, glancing at Y/N with a hint of confusion before her gaze shifted back to chaeyoung. whenever yena ever spoke to her, it was usually in the form of cursing and throwing things.
Y/N felt a pang of disappointment as her girlfriend’s attention drifted back to chaeyoung after a brief acknowledgement. the ache in her chest deepened as she watched chaeyoung subtly steer lisa's focus away from the brewing conversation by fixing the jacket her girlfriend was wearing.
it made her want to drag lisa out of her own birthday party and wisk her away to some foreign country with no other people except the two of them. perhaps an island, or even somewhere like greenland.
despite the disappointment, Y/N felt a mix of emotions swirling within her—a sense of frustration, hurt, and a growing annoyance at chaeyoung's deliberate interference. she couldn't shake off the feeling that chaeyoung's actions were intentionally undermining any chance of communication between lisa and herself.
the point guard shifted and forced a genuine smile on her lips as she leaned into her girlfriend’s chest, inhaling her familiar cologne. lisa didn’t take her focus off of the blonde in front of her, nodding along to whatever it was she was saying while gently nudging Y/N off of her.
Y/N's heart sank as lisa's attention remained fixated on the other woman, despite Y/N's attempt to seek comfort in her girlfriend's embrace.
trying to hide her disappointment, Y/N straightened herself, feigning a nonchalant demeanor. she masked her inner turmoil behind the mask of a casual smile, though the ache within her intensified with each passing moment.
“don’t do that while i’m talking, babe.” lisa chuckled, eyes still on chaeyoung before sparing a quick glance at her girlfriend.
the blonde girl chuckled along with lisa before raising an eyebrow, quickly eyeing Y/N up and down. “is that your girlfriend?”
the basketball player hummed in response, gently patting Y/N’s cheek in a dismissive manner. “yup.”
Y/N didn’t know how to describe the look park chaeyoung gave her. it wasn’t malice, annoyance, or jealousy. chaeyoung's gaze held a peculiar mix of indifference and subtle dismissal. it wasn't a direct confrontation or a harsh glance; it was a cold, distant demeanor that seemed to cut through Y/N's attempt to engage.
her silence spoke volumes, a silent assertion of dominance or perhaps an intentional act to disregard Y/N's presence.
as the interaction continued, Y/N felt a knot form in her stomach, a rising sense of frustration at being sidelined and dismissed. she struggled to comprehend the volleyball player’s behavior—was it a deliberate attempt to assert her influence over lisa, or was it merely an innocent display of friendship that inadvertently left Y/N feeling excluded?
despite the confusion and the subtle discomfort, Y/N tried to maintain a composed facade. she attempted to brush off the blonde’s disregard, but the weight of her actions lingered heavily in the air.
lisa, caught in the middle of the exchange, seemed oblivious to the present tension. “i think you two could be close friends. the three of us can hang out soon.” the basketball star stated casually, taking a swig of her drink before glancing back at chaeyoung. “we’ll be off next weekend i think. depends if we have to watch film.”
however, chaeyoung's response was a simple, nonchalant shrug. “dunno, i’m pretty busy. anyway let’s go get punch, i heard it’s drowning in vodka.”
without another word, she reached for lisa's hand, gently tugging her away from Y/N's side. the blonde's actions were subtle yet definitive, a clear message that their conversation was over and that she had claimed lisa's attention.
as lisa followed chaeyoung's lead, Y/N stood there, feeling a mixture of frustration, hurt, and a growing sense of realization. the manner in which chaeyoung effortlessly redirected lisa's attention away from Y/N highlighted the undeniable hold she had over her girlfriend.
it was becoming increasingly evident that chaeyoung's influence over her girlfriend was something that was clearly never going to change.
yena rolled her eyes as she swung an arm around her roommate’s shoulder, ignoring the urge to suddenly kick lisa in the back of the head. she never understood how Y/N puts up with the basketball star, but she didn’t bother breaking her brain to think about it.
all she did know was that lisa never deserved Y/N, not even once.
“come on, let’s go find yuqi. we can go get ice cream.”

waking up late was bad enough. missing your bus was another thing. it was raining. and i mean it was RAINING. no umbrella could save you from this weather. somi was out of town today so you couldnt even ask her for a ride. and your mom has already gone off to work so you dont really have a choice but to wait for the next bus… which arrives in 20 minutes.
“fucking great” you mumble. you already know that your mom’s gonna be pissed at you for being late even after she woke you up 3 times before going to work and getting scolded is the last thing you want today.
fast footsteps could he heard from your right. as if someones running. but youre too busy going through your bag to make sure you have everything you need. suddenly a bracelet is thrown into your backpack. its a very pretty bracelet. it had light blue glass beads with a pretty flower gem in the middle.
“omg im so sorr-“ the voice pauses which causes you to look up at the owner of the voice but once you do, you kinda regret it.
“yn?! good morning!” it was that beomgyu kid who texted u on twitter. hes also the kid you bumped into like yesterday.
“sorry about the bracelet… and yesterday when i bumped into you”
so he remembers…
“i… um…”
and then your legs start taking off as you run back to your house. you could hear beomgyu yelling your name but you dont bother to turn around. this is really embarrassing but youd rather run back home and risk getting yelled at by your mother than stand awkwardly with beomgyu.
crazy morning.

His Future Empress (2)
~ Warnings : Contains ANGST (?) content, cringe ending 💀, grammar error
~ Part 1 here
|| crown prince!euijoo x fem!oc ||
The atmosphere around Euijoo was really tense. Especially his mother's sharp gaze which caught him red-handed with Eunji. Of course it's tense, his mother certainly knows that Euijoo slept with his older sister's lady-in-waiting. However, Euijoo remained calm, he even tried to be patient when his mother cursed Eunji harshly in front of him.
Jiho could only massage his temples when he found out that his son had a mistress among the court ladies. Meanwhile, Hajoon? She didn't look at all shocked when her mother told her that her trusted lady had slept with her brother.
Hwara said insulting words to Eunji without thinking about her feelings. When insulted like that by her Empress, Eunji just looked down and cried, she couldn't defend herself, because it was impossible for her to fight the wife of an emperor.
"You will be sent to your parents!" When Hwara said that, Euijoo immediately glared at her mother. "No, she's not going anywhere, Mama!" Euijoo held Eunji's arm tightly, she glared at her mother which made Hwara even more angry. "You lost your sanity because of this lowly girl, Euijoo?! Mom chose the best girl to be your companion, but you ended up picking up trash?!" Hwara shouted at her son, Euijoo, who initially tried to be patient, immediately lost his patience because his mother really couldn't be kept quiet any longer.
"But your choice is not my type! Somi is just a burden if she marries me!"-Euijoo
"Burden you say?! What about this girl?! She will also be a burden to all governments and this country! What will society say if you marry your own sister's lower class lady!"-Hwara
"The public has full trust in me, I'm sure they will respect my choice! Because they know, their crown prince always has the best things for them. Including choosing the empress for them!" Euijoo stood in front of her mother with a flat face and straight posture. He actually challenged his own mother. "And you should be worried about people's trust in you, mama. What about when they find out that the girl he chose for her son was the wrong choice? Maybe they think you're trash for throwing her son into a crocodile hole," Euijoo's words now made his father immediately furious. "EUIJOO! WATCH YOUR TALK TO YOUR OWN MOTHER!" Jiho immediately grabbed Euijoo's pajama collar roughly. "Your mother knows what's best for you, so you should do what she says! And yes, your mistress should be sent to her parents so as not to spread this damn scandal!" Jiho immediately pushed Euijoo hard.
"Papa, I have authority over Eunji, she is my lady-in-waiting, not your mother's lady-in-waiting or your-"
"I am the Emperor here, Hajoon! And you, don't you dare interfere!" Jiho immediately cut off his daughter's words. Making Hajoon also secretly angry.
"The decision has been made, Eunji will be sent to her parents and she will not be allowed to set foot in this palace!"-Jiho
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hajoon hugged Eunji tightly when Eunji was about to leave to return to her parents' house. Eunji will be taken by one of the royal drivers on Hajoon's orders. "I'm sorry, Highness. I'm really sorry for making this mess," Eunji cried while holding Hajoon's hand. Hajoon smiled faintly then rubbed his hands. "No need to apologize, your and Euijoo's love is not wrong, everything will be fine. Don't worry, Euijoo will fight for you," Hajoon's words made Eunji shake her head. ""I'd better really stay away from the crown prince, I don't want this problem to always—"
"You won't stay away from me, Eunji. The future Emperor will not be far from his future Empress," Eunji's speech was interrupted by Euijoo who arrived. Evidence of crying was on Euijoo's cheeks, he was also just as stressed because of the pressure from his parents. "I will get you back today, I will not let anyone take you away from me. You were born to be my empress, not to be part of the lower class anymore," Euijoo kissed Eunji's forehead for a long time. He wouldn't let his girl get away.
No matter what, Euijoo will not give him the title of crown princess or even empress when he ascends the throne to become Emperor if his wife is not Eunji. He only wants Eunji, not other girls.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Euijoo's engagement ceremony went quite smoothly and was only attended by Euijoo and Somi's immediate family. Somi smiled happily because her status had really risen one level, and one more step she would become the wife of a crown prince.
"Don't get into trouble, Euijoo! Approach your fiancé and talk to her," Euijoo, who heard her mother whisper sharply to her, just grinned. "Don't make me angry or I could do something that will make this dynasty's reputation explode, Mama," Euijoo turned to threaten her mother. He really hated his mother's selfish behavior and didn't think about his feelings. Even though Hwara wasn't like this before.
"Stop threatening me, Euijoo. You—"
"You keep me away from my girl! It's not wrong for me to threaten you again!" Euijoo shouted again at his mother, making everyone look at him. Euijoo, who was really on the verge of anger, immediately threw the glass in his hand, making everyone there scream.
"Why? You don't like me threatening you?! You made me like this, Mama!" Euijoo snapped harshly. "You set me up with a spoiled girl who isn't even ready to be a crown princess! I don't want Somi! I want Eunji! My Eunji!" Hearing another girl's name, Somi furrowed her eyebrows, she approached Euijoo and Hwara. "Who is Eunji? Majesty, who is Eunji?" Somi shook Hwara's arm lightly, making Hwara panic at her. "Somi, baby-"
"Eunji? She is my future wife, Somi. I've been with her before compared to you, she should be the one here, not you!" Euijoo interrupted her mother's words as she wanted to calm Somi. Somi and her parents were immediately shocked when they heard this.
"Majesty, what is the meaning of all this?!" Somi's mother immediately lunged at Hwara which made Hwara even more overwhelmed.
"Eunji and I have been in contact for a long time, even in my own bed. That girl who will be with me, becomes my empress," Jiho, who was also panicking, was about to give his son a punch, but Euijoo dodged first. "Punching me is useless, Papa. You won't win, if you still want Somi to be my wife, fine. Her and I will get married, but the consequence is that I can make Eunji my concubine. She will conceive and give birth to my offspring, while Somi will only be my wife by status, but I will not touch her. And papa, don't you want to abolish the concubine system? But what if I resurrect that thing," Euijoo's threat succeeded in making his core family members glare, including his grandmother, the queen mother. She didn't want her grandson to be unfaithful to his wife.
"And let me marry Eunji or not at all, Papa," This threat was a threat that the imperial family was quite afraid of. If a crown prince does not marry at all, it could cause sharp controversy among the public. Some aspects could be weakened.
Somi, who didn't accept this, immediately uttered insulting words at Eunji like a courtier, which made Euijoo even more disgusted with the girl. "Shut your mouth or I'll throw you out of here, Somi!" Euijoo stood in front of Somi and his eyes flashed with anger, and Somi had no fear. "I really didn't expect the crown prince, who has a good image in society, to be this bastard. Even has a mistress who I'm sure you picked up from the trash," Hearing this, Euijoo was about to physically attack Somi before his sister pushed him hard before he hurt Somi.
"Come on Euijoo, get out of here!" Hajoon immediately dragged Euijoo to calm her down, because if he was in that room, Euijoo's 'air' could get hotter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Euijoo's scandal about him having a mistress immediately became a public riot in South Korea. Many of them immediately gave bitter judgment to Euijoo and did not expect Euijoo to act this low. However, quite a few also defended Euijoo that this was all just the work of the Somi family who wanted to undermine the dignity of the Empire.
Everything changed when Euijoo immediately provided clarification openly in various media. He told what happened without further ado.After the clarification went perfectly, Somi's family also received a judgment equivalent to what Euijoo experienced. Not a few of them also don't like Somi, especially her behavior which goes too far in giving false things about the Imperial family.
Hwara and Jiho were really still angry at Euijoo, and didn't even want to talk to her, and Euijoo didn't mind that. His main focus now is how he can marry Eunji. His threat to his parents was enough to make his parents surrender.
Now he actually invites Eunji to meet her grandmother, the queen mother. Eunji was initially afraid because the Queen Mother's temperament looked strict, but when the Queen Mother smiled at her, Eunji immediately smiled back. Why did Euijoo take Eunji to her grandmother? The answer is, it was her grandmother who wanted to meet Eunji in person.
"I approve of you," The queen mother's words succeeded in making Eunji choke on her tea. The queen mother just chuckled seeing that. "Don't worry, I will convince the emperor and empress that you are the right girl for Euijoo. Gradually, they will love you like their own daughter, my son and daughter-in-law are good people, they are still emotional now," The Queen Mother said softly to Eunji. The Queen Mother just wants things to get better. She didn't want her grandson to lose his love like she had experienced before, when her husband cheated on her by having many mistresses. This is indeed different from the case, but if Eunji is separated from Euijoo it is the same as Euijoo losing her true love.
In the end, Eunji was the one who remained the winner. The winner in Euijoo's heart who she will one day accompany to become an Emperor.
ch. xlviii - she's no longer with us
soulmate!yunho × reader
fated and marked, soulmates are supposed to be your destiny. you are connected to him by his heart and him to yours. but despite the cosmic or even divine intervention, you felt that he is not wholly yours. why is destiny so cruel to you?
To say that it was a bad morning was an understatement. The road to Ilsan was closed off due to an accident with a truck. The truck toppled over and blocked off the whole road and so he was forced to spend the night in his car at a rest area nearby.
It was as if the universe was punishing him for meeting Somi. He actually unserdtood why the universe would punish him but to put him in a tougher position with his soulmate was just cruel. All through the night, he thought of ways to make things up to you. He wanted to call you and apologize but his phone had completely died and he didn't have any way to charge it until he got to the bnb.
As soon as he woke up, he immediately drove to Ilsan.
Yunho arrived at the bnb at exactly 8.22 am, dishelved and looking rather frantic. The front desk was occupied by a kid. And by kid, it's literally a child with a Nintendo Switch in his hands, glaring at the screen of his console with his tongue stuck out, similar to an angry puppy.
Not knowing which room you got into, Yunho can't just go in and look into each room. So he rung the bell at the front desk to get anyone's attention.
The first rung, no one came from the back nor did the kid lifted his gaze from his game.
The second rung, he managed to get a scrunch of the nose from the kid.
The third which consecutively followed by the fourth, fifth, and sixth, finally managed to get someone's attention.
"Kyungmin!" A lady called as she rushed behind the front desk, "Why'd you just sit there? You could've helped with the guest!" She scolded. The boy paused his game and stared at his mom with a pout on his face, "I'm sorry, but hyung said I'm not supposed to interact with strangers," he then turn his head towards Yunho and squinted at him dramatically, "That guy could take me away and take my stomach to sell in the Black Market," he concluded.
The lady simply rolled her eyes and smacked the little boy lightly on the arm, "Don't be ridiculous! And you're being rude to our customer! Which one of your hyungs said that to you?" His mom asked. Before Kyungmin could answer, Yunho had interrupted them, "I'm sorry to cut in, but can I please ask for help?" Yunho asked sheepishly. Realizing this, the lady ushered the little boy to play in the back as she turned a charming, homey smile on her face. "I'm sorry for that, what can I help you with?" She asked with an obviously set up customer service voice. Yunho actually was amazed at how quick she can change her expressions and tone.
"I- I was supposed to arrive here yesterday evening following ny girlfriend who arrived here earlier, but there was an issue on the road. My phone died so I can't ask my girlfriend anything, I think she is still sleeping and I don't wanna wake her. Can you help me find our room?" He asked. The lady chuckled and opened a medium sized book with leather hardcover, "Not to worry dearie, I can just check her name here," she said reassuringly which made Yunho sighe in relief. "Now what's the name of the reservation?" She asked as she scanned the book, "I'm not sure but it should either be under Jung Yunho or (y/n),"
The lady's finger on the page stopped moving as her head shot up to stare at Yunho in disbelief. "(y/n) you said? And... Yunho?" She asked again, seemingly surprised. Yunho was equally, if not more, surprised that she seemed to know him. He simply nodded slowly, "yes, (y/n) is my girlfriend and I'm Jung Yunho,"
For the second time that day, Yunho saw how quick the lady could change her expression in milliseconds. Her kind eyes turned into a glare and at that moment, Yunho believed that the ground could simply split open and swallow him whole. It seemed for a while that she hesitated to give him any help, but she sighed and dropped a key on the counter in front of him, "Room 494, first floor," she simply said. Yunho took the keys but simply dumbly stared at it. The lady sighed in exasperation and pointed at the numbers printed, "1F494, got it?" she stated so bluntly.
Scared that he'd piss her off, Yunho bowed at her and scurried off with his luggage. Even as he walked away, he could hear her muttering or maybe cursing at him. He had no idea what he could've done for her to hate him that much, but he had a sneaking suspicion that it might have something to do with you.
When he entered the room, he could understand why you wanted to go the bnb in the first place. The room was beyond comfy and the scenery was just breathtaking. He felt serenity wash over him within the few minutes he roamed around the room.
But the feeling didn't last as long as he scanned the room, looking over the items that you had put on the tables and also your opened luggage. He then shifted his gaze to the bed that is slightly wrinkled, indicating that it's been laid on but not slept in. He wondered where you might be, why you're not in bed at such an early time.
After dropping his luggage next to yours, he went to plop down on the bed. How much he wished he had slept on the bed instead of on the stiff backseat of his car.
Yunho decided to text send you a text message, asking about your whereabouts. Several text messages to be exact. he had hoped you would answer as soon as possible, but there was no immediate answer. He thought that you might just be out walking around town, getting breakfast while resenting his absence. So he decided to take a quick shower, clean himself from the night in his car. It felt disgusting and not even the hot shower can wash off the guilt.
Thinking that he should wait for you, Yunho decided to just stay in the room. He didn't want to leave the room for any reason, he even ordered food to his room, delivered by the same lady from the front desk. The times when he opened the door of his room to check on your arrival or to get the food, he'd see the little boy lurking around the corner before dashing off somewhere else. Why was that boy so interested in him?
After hours spent in his room, Yunho felt his patience running thin. He knew he had messed up yet again, but to give him the silent treatment and decided that he wasn't worth any chance of redemption. So he became slightly pissed. The texts he sent began to show how impatient he is.
Finally, at 4.13 pm he decided to seek an answer of his own. The lady at the front desk was the first person he thought of.
Luckily, the lady and the little boy were there, sitting all happy and content. That was until he showed up. A scowl immediately appeared on the lady's face even before Yunho had the chance to say anything. "Excuse me, I-" "You want to ask where your girlfriend is," the lady stated, cutting Yunho off. Yunho's eyes widened in surprise, not expecting her to immediately tell him that she knows your whereabouts.
"You know where she is?" he asked again, making sure. The little boy tugged on his mom's shirt, "Mom, does this ahjussi know (y/n) noona?" he asked. Yunho's left eye twitched when he heard the word 'ahjussi', but that wasn't what he wanted to focus on at that moment. The lady waved a hand to the boy, wordlessly telling him to not interfere. "Weird isn't it that a bnb owner knows where your girlfriend is but not you?" she asked back snidely.
Ignoring her snideness, he decided that knowing your whereabouts is more important. "Can you please tell me where she is? Please?" Yunho pled.
Though not knowing him, she knew that he's going to be relentless. So she exhaled sharply to show her disdain, propped her hands on the desk, and stared at him dead in the eyes.
"She's no longer with us," she blurted out.
While earlier he felt like the ground could open and swallow him, at that moment, Yunho felt as if a block of ice had been thrown on his face.
"W-what ?" he asked again, thinking he was mistaken.
The lady leaned in close to his face and repeated slowly, "She is no longer with us," she said.
Before any more interaction could happen, Yunho had bolted away to his room in disbelief.
He knew he had to make a plan. But what? What can he do after hearing that you're no longer with them?
WHEN MARK WAS 16, he was truly, madly, deeply in love with you.
It was a problem that he hated, one that he knew he wouldn’t be able to figure out. And, trust him, he knew there were only two solutions to the problem: tell you or drive a stake in the exact middle of your relationship. Neither of them were options he liked, so he just dealt with the aching in his heart, the pain caused by how much he wanted to love you openly, and stayed a normal, average friend.
He didn’t think you’d be the one to drive the stake, but at least you had done him a favor. Originally, even after you’d started dating Minhee, he had no plans of unfriending you.
Mark hated to say it, but not having you around was a blessing in disguise for him. There was no more cringing at love songs, no more lying awake at night in case you’d text him, no more feeling insecure every time you talked to anyone who wasn’t him. He surrounded himself with his other friends, with Renjun and Donghyuck, and moved on—it was blissful.
There was no stress. No heartache. Just happiness.
Maybe Mark should’ve remembered that when you texted him seven months ago, saying that you felt like your friendship with him ended too unexpectedly.
How could he have predicted this, though? For god’s sake, when he received that text, you two hadn’t talked in nearly three years. He was in university now, moved on from past grievances and outdated feelings, and, when you had sent that text, he hadn’t felt anywhere near how he used to. Hell, he viewed it as his first time rekindling with an old friend, something his mom did with high school friends all the time.
Maybe he was stupid for thinking it was okay. Maybe he was an idiot. Maybe the real issue was that he let his emotions fester for two years, ignoring them until he didn’t need to see you every single day of his life. Maybe he should’ve faced this before you weren’t in a three-year-long relationship and he had no choice but to keep things to himself, lest he wants to make you feel bad or become a homewrecker.
Now, Mark was back at step one—awake in the early hours of the morning, waiting for a possible nightmare text, or any text, from you. It was grating, and he wasn’t sure why he was going through this for the second time. You were across the country from him; while you were in Quebec, he was in Vancouver, and more likely to text you once you’d woken up for the day at this point.
This was awful. He didn’t know why he was doing this. He wanted nothing more than to be peacefully asleep, to wake up refreshed for his morning class without a care in the world. Instead, he revolved around you, waiting for the day he might just have the chance to do what he should’ve done before.
-
Something you liked to do with Mark was what you called quasi-café dates (how much did you want him dead?), where you and he sat in your respective cafés across the country from each other, talking to each other on the phone. According to your claims, you brought a little tripod to hold your phone up, so he could see you better.
He’d never tell you that, after you said that, you went out and bought the same thing. Besides, you seemed to believe him when he said he just stacked up a bunch of his useless textbooks.
When you first started doing these café dates, you’d offhandedly mentioned that Minhee said no every time you asked, each time with a different excuse than before. “He’s got classes when I don’t, and every time I’m here he’s stuck in a lecture,” you claimed, and Mark could see straight through the smile you kept on your face. “It’s okay, though. Everything is going very well between us—we call every morning and night, and we send each other letters. It’s nice.”
It seemed as though every time Minhee did something wrong, there was something good to make up for it—Mark hated that. Mark hated him, for no good reason at all, and couldn’t stand seeing you lament over his absence every time you talked to him.
Nevertheless, he would treasure these café dates with you for as long as he could.
“So, how’s the music going?” you asked, stirring a cube of sugar into your tea. The sound of the spoon hitting the sides of the cup overtook whatever you were saying, and Mark cursed the phone microphone for focusing on the wrong noise. “I mean, you were helping Chenle with something, right? A school thing.”
“Oh, yeah, yeah.” Mark nodded, scratching the back of his neck. “Um, it’s an end-of-the-year thing, so he’s turned it in. We are just waiting for the grade.”
“I hope it goes well,” you offered, taking a sip of the tea. “Speaking of the end of the year, are you heading back to Ontario for the summer? I’d love to have tea with you, like, in person—it’d be nicer than this.”
Mark’s heart went up to his throat, and a wave of giddiness poured over his body. He could’ve died, right then and there; it was so painfully platonic, and, yet, he was so painfully entranced.
“Yeah, I’ll—I’ll be back. Uh, yeah, we can have tea, so long as you’re not too busy with Minhee,” he smiled, mentally cursing himself for phrasing it like that. Sure, he was still a little hurt by you leaving him in the dust all those years ago, but he hadn’t meant to say it so passive-aggressively.
You, on the other hand, weren’t too phased by his hostility.
“Oh, speaking of him!” a smile bloomed on your face, and Mark’s heart beat once more. “I told him that I was staying in Quebec, so I’m gonna surprise him. I don’t know if you’re friends with him, or know anybody who is, so don’t tell anyone I’m coming home. ‘Kay?”
Mark was almost flattered that you thought he was friends with Minhee. When you first started dating him, Minhee hated his guts. To Minhee, Mark assumed, he was the enemy—the boy who’d occupied your attention up until the moment he asked you out.
Minhee had never told Mark to stay away or to back off, rather he was sly in the way he dragged you away from him. So, Mark told all his friends about it, and they began to hate Minhee too. If any of them knew anything about him, Mark would be shocked.
“Yeah, no problem. Secret’s safe with me.”
“Anyway, do you remember that coffeehouse we always went to in our freshman year? We should go back there, for old times’ sake…”
You kept talking, kept going on and on about all the good times you had oh-so-long ago, but Mark couldn’t bring himself to listen. He just focused on your face, made up of pixels and dim light, separated from him by a screen, and wondered why he was so stupid.
“So, how is your relationship with Minhee? I’m was never really around for it.”
You and Minhee were approaching three years, you said. You wonder how you got so lucky with him; he can be a bit fickle sometimes, but he never hurt you in a way he couldn’t make it up. He apologized when he was in the wrong, he memorized your restaurant orders, he got you whatever gift reminded him of you, he’s basically your other half. You think you’re gonna marry him, one day, leaving Mark behind to writhe over what he might’ve lost over his stupid fear of losing you completely (you didn’t say the second part aloud, but it was implied).
“I’m glad. It’s not common to find the one in high school. Good for you, [First].”
He could attest to that, through and through.
-
“Dude,” Renjun said, swiping the White Claw from Mark’s hand with ease. Drunkenly, Mark reached out for it, but Jeno—who’d appeared out of nowhere—slapped his hand away and put a glass of water in front of him. “You’re going to give yourself alcohol poisoning. Lay off.”
Chenle let out a shriek as Jaemin picked him up, bringing him over to the lit-up pool and dropping him in. Jeno slid into the chair across from Mark at the previously unoccupied table, crossing his arms over his chest. Renjun pulled up another chair, joining Jeno in giving Mark disapproving stares.
“When did Jaemin and Chenle get so close?” Mark slurred, pointing at the two. In his drunken stupor, Mark imagined Jaemin and Chenle as you and him, even if you were just friends, having a good time together with Minhee nowhere in sight.
The thought made Mark’s head hurt.
“They started gaming together a lot over the past year, but that doesn’t matter,” Jeno replied, pushing the glass of water closer to him. “What’s up with you right now, man? You’re so…off.”
“I started talking with [First] again.”
“Seriously?” Renjun asked, seeming a bit appalled. After all they’d been through, all the healing they had to force upon Mark in the early stages of their friendship, it was hard to imagine him ever going back to you. Plus, he’d seemed fully, irrevocably over it by the time he graduated. Yet, here he was, back at square one, in a worse place than before. “Isn’t…you know what, never mind. Why?”
“What do you mean by ‘why?’”
“He means you were happier without her around,” Jeno commented, nodding with satisfaction as Mark took a huge swig of the water. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, [First] really is a sweetheart, but she shredded you to pieces. You were like, I don’t know, like an unpeeled, rotten banana by the time your friendship was over.”
“I couldn’t just ignore her. She reached out, and, well, I thought it—I thought it would be okay.” Mark was getting choked up,  something he’d never do sober, but both of them were well acquainted with the sad, drunken version of him (which was just normal Mark with a hint of uncontrollable crying). “I thought I was over it. She was across the country. How was I supposed to know she was just as terrible over the phone?”
“It’s not too late to start ignoring her,” Renjun suggested, raising his brows. “You’re busy with us this summer. Blow her off until she stops asking because she’s too busy planning her wedding with Minhee. It’s as good as over for the second time. Huh?”
“Can’t.”
Mark let his head drop onto the table with a thud, unable to get rid of the headache Chenle’s screech had given him. He was getting tired.
“Why not?”
“We’re getting coffee in two days. She gets back tonight and gives Minhee a big surprise tomorrow.”
“Cancel on her, then?” Jeno said as if it was that easy.
“No. I’ll go and then stop talking to her. Yeah. That’s simple enough.”
Renjun said something else, but he was getting hard to hear. Mark would just go to sleep, wake up with a bad hangover and the urge to throw up all over Chenle’s house. He’d go through the motions, feel like somebody was stabbing his heart with a burning sword, and then stay up all night until he physically couldn’t keep himself awake.
It was easy. It was routine. He could do it well.
So, he’d be dead to the world right now.
-
Mark wanted to throw his phone against the wall. It jerked him awake with a start, the sound of an obnoxious, default ringtone ringing throughout the room. Jeno, from across the room, let out an angry groan, throwing a pillow perfectly in Mark’s direction.
It was easy enough to shut it off, but it wasn’t easy enough to push himself off the floor. The moment he got to his feet, a wave of pain assaulted his head, nearly knocking him back over. He needed to find Advil, or any hangover medicine Chenle’s parents have—they told him they bought some, in case things got too wild in their words, but he couldn’t remember where they said it was.
Jeno was sprawled out along the couch, and Jaemin had been lying on the floor next to Mark and the fireplace. Chenle and Jisung were asleep on the table, cuddling into each other like a couple (if Mark wasn’t dying, he’d snap a picture). Renjun and Haechan were likely upstairs in the guest rooms they were offered the night before and were not going to make an appearance until someone came to them.
Mark stumbled into the kitchen, wincing at how much brighter it was in there. Chenle lived in one of those stereotypical rich kid houses, so there were windows everywhere. No matter where he looked, Mark was met with morning sunlight.
Looking at the oven clock, Mark groaned when he realized it was noon. It wasn’t morning sunlight, it was the blazing, unbearable, summer afternoon sun. Then, Mark realized it was noon.
He ripped his phone from his pocket, squinting as he tried to make out his notifications. Most of them were from university friends or various apps, Twitter and Instagram, but there were a special few from you—three, two-hour-old texts and a missed call from three minutes ago.
“Wish me luck!!” the first one read, along with a few random emojis you were accustomed to sending.
“Ahh, I’m so nervous. Are you not awake yet?”
Mark was amused by how correctly you texted him. He’d never get used to the capitalization and proper punctuation.
“Oh, I forgot you and your friends were having your reunion, lol. I bet it was fun!! Drink lots of water today, and I’ll call later!!”
Mark assumed that the missed call was intended to be you explaining how things were going, but he was too busy trying to wake up to answer. Without thinking, he hurried to press the call button, putting the phone up to his ear giddily. His hangover turned into nervousness, and then a bit of fear.
One ring. Two rings. You probably weren’t going to pick up, Mark reasoned. Three rings and Mark decided he’d probably missed his chance. Four rings. He’d let it run, just in case you were far away from your phone—
“Hello?”
That was not your voice. It was an unfamiliar man’s voice, certainly not Minhee’s. There was shouting in the background, from more voices Mark didn’t recognize.
“Hello? Who is this?”
“Oh, this is Keeho. You’re Mark Lee, right?” the man on the other side of the phone asked. “Well, duh, that was a stupid question. How are you?”
“Um, I’m fine. Is there a reason [First] didn’t pick up?”
“Oh, yeah, haha. Well,” Keeho started, but he was cut off by more yelling. “I’ll be right out! Mark finally called, all right? The store can wait!”
“Is everything okay?”
“No, everything’s terrible. [First] isn’t dead, so don’t shit yourself, but, uh…how do I say this?”
Mark stayed quiet, waiting anxiously for Keeho to continue talking. He went silent for a moment as if he was contemplating how to break whatever news he needed to.
“Well, I guess I’ll simply come out with it. Minhee was cheating on her,” Keeho said, and Mark could’ve punched himself over the hope that began pooling in his stomach. How much of an asshole was he, to be happy she’d been cheated on? “She’s, uh, pretty inconsolable, so your coffee date is canceled. But, if you want to come by and join the damage control team, that’d be helpful.”
“You’re kidding.”
“Nope. Are you coming by? I can explain it then.”
“I can come over, just give me a minute. Is she just at her parents’ house?”
“She’s staying with me, so I’ll just text the address. We’ll be back from the store in about, hm, an hour, so don’t come any earlier.”
Keeho didn’t wait to hang up, and the effects of Mark’s hangover were almost completely gone in a second. He was practically tripping over himself to get his shit together, picking up random items he’d sprawled around the house.
“Where the hell are you headed?” Jeno asked groggily, barely gaining Mark’s attention from the question.
“Minhee cheated,” Mark replied, zipping up his backpack and looking at his phone. Sure enough, he’d been sent an address, one that was about thirty minutes away.
“Wait,” Jeno said, pushing himself up from the couch. His walking was unsteady, no doubt the effects of last night, but he didn’t cease. “You realize you’re signing yourself off right now? If you go, Mark, there’s no coming back.”
“Then, consider me signed,” Mark replied, slinging the backpack over his shoulder and walking towards the entryway. Jeno followed, forcing Mark to give him a better answer than that. “I’ll finally be able to do what I should’ve done three years ago, and the first step towards that is helping her get over him. Okay? I need to do this.”
Jeno bit his lip, leaning against the wall. Mark looked back at him one last time, unconsciously seeking out some sort of validation (or lack thereof) from his friend. Jeno stared back, and an uncomfortable silence fell between the two, signaling all Mark needed to know about this.
“You’re on your own,” Jeno said, putting his hands into the pockets of his sweatpants. “If this goes spiraling, we won’t spend every second of the day picking up the pieces again, Mark.”
“I know,” he responded, and, with that, he was out the door, car keys in hand and a passive ache in his heart.
-
Keeho was a good-looking guy. His eyes lit up when he saw Mark carrying a tray of coffee, simple iced Americanos that he scraped up from a nearby coffee shop, along with a fruit pastry they’d been selling. “You’re a lifesaver,” Keeho praised, instantly moving to help take everything inside. His apartment was eerily silent, with two girls sitting on the couch, one fast asleep and the other scrolling on her phone.
“She fell asleep from, well, crying too hard,” Keeho explained, kicking the door shut behind him with the flat of his foot. “Seriously, she’s never cried that hard, like, ever. I was beginning to think she didn’t have tear ducts.”
“Dude, be nice,” one of the girls said, the one Mark could recognize—Jeon Somi, one of your club friends from high school.
“I am being nice. We’re cousins. I could be a lot meaner. Coffee?”
Somi pushed herself off the couch, and Mark felt a hefty weight fall off his shoulders. Keeho was your cousin, nobody that could potentially ruin his plans of confess-and-get-rejected-without-guilt. It was especially comforting that, should Mark play his cards right, Keeho would become an ally to his cause.
“So, uh, what happened?”
“Oh, right. So, I’m sure she told you about her surprise,” Keeho hummed, taking a sip of the coffee. “Well, we drive up, and she tells us to stay outside just in case things go ‘poorly.’ I mean, she practically predicted it, but that’s beside the point. We’re waiting for her to send a text, about twenty minutes pass, and she’s calmly walking back out.”
“Like, calmly,” Somi emphasized, taking one of the coffees for herself as well. Mark was glad he decided to get four instead of three; he had the perfect amount for everyone. “So, she gets in the passenger seat, and we all kinda sat there and didn’t say anything.”
“And then,” Keeho continued, taking the rest of the coffees from the drink tray so he could throw it away. “She says, like, super nonchalantly, ‘He’s been cheating on me the whole time.’ Obviously we were shocked because Minhee was goddamn possessive, really terribly, yet he’s cheating? So we asked her to elaborate, and she just kind of shrugged.
“By this point, you could tell she was near tears, but she kept talking like things were completely normal. Then, she said, ‘The reason the long distance was going so smoothly was because he was hooking up with girls on the side.’ She goes on to explain that he tried to say it wasn’t his fault, that the girl had drugged him, but the girl got super pissed and told her everything, beginning to end, and then she just left. Now we’re here.”
Mark was a bit appalled. Cheating was the worst possible outcome, and Mark wanted to say he expected it, but Keeho was right when he said Minhee was possessive. How could he end up cheating when he hated any man, including innocent Mark, getting anywhere near you? It seemed unbelievable.
“We’re taking shifts now and hoping recovery doesn’t take the whole summer. This was a big breakup, though, so we aren’t hopeful. But, earlier, [First] was babbling on and on about how Minhee’d known her longer than any of her friends and how he made her drop all of her other longtime friends, but you’re here now, so maybe things will speed up,” Somi said. “You can take the next shift, yeah? And Keeho and I will keep searching for the strawberry shortcake ice cream she loves so dearly.”
“I don’t mind, but, uh, your friend on the couch…”
“She won’t care. Ryujin probably won’t wake up until we’re back, anyway.” Keeho waved off Mark’s worries with ease, nodding his head towards a hallway next to the kitchen. “She’s in there. There’s a couch, and we have tissues stocked up in the bathroom. Our first goal is to get her to stop crying every second of the day, so focus on that accordingly. We’ll be out. I have your number from [First]’s phone; I’ll text when we are headed back.”
“Sounds good.” Mark nodded, turning his attention towards a door that was slightly cracked. If he had to guess, that was your door, and you were in there, red-faced and fast asleep, wishing for someone to put you out of your misery. Mark had been there.
He peeked through the crack in the door, flinching as the front door opened and slammed closed. You laid unmoving on your side, facing the wall opposite the door, breathing soundly. Mark took that as a sign that he could comfortably walk inside, unafraid of you blowing up at him in your sorry state. The TV was on, with some random variety show playing quietly, deliberately put on to be background noise.
Mark rounded the bed quietly, finally coming face to face with you. You looked peaceful, with no nightmares or unhappiness plaguing whatever dreams you were having. Your face was, indeed, red, and there was still evidence of tears lingering on your cheeks, mostly in the form of poorly removed mascara. Not able to imagine that being comfortable, Mark approached the bathroom, which was attached to the bedroom with a small doorway.
He was sure you had to have some sort of makeup remover in there, especially if this was your temporary home for the summer. Sure enough, there was a container of makeup wipes on the counter, and Mark vaguely remembered Chenle going on a rant about how makeup wipes were awful for your skin. Nevertheless, he picked it up, opening the bag without making any noise as best he could.
“How many do you usually need?” he whispered to himself, deciding two was the magic number. He crept back out into the room, making barely any noise as he crouched down next to you. And, as gently as he could, Mark began scrubbing the makeup off your face, wiping at the apples of your cheeks and barely brushing against your eyelids.
He felt at peace. Even when you were sad, distraught, and angry, Mark felt as though you were the most gorgeous person he had ever seen; from your hair to even your hands, there was nothing about you that wasn’t beautiful. You were, quite possibly, the most precious person in his life, even if you weren’t more than good friends.
With one slightly-too-firm swipe, your eyes shot open, and you seemed a bit delirious. Mark smiled at you, retracting his hand and placing it on his knee. “Good morning,” he whispered, watching as you became reacquainted with your surroundings. True to Keeho’s word, you instantly began to tear up, which made Mark panic a bit.
“No, don’t cry,” he whispered, frowning. “Do you need anything? Water?”
You shook your head, pushing yourself up from your laying-down position. Mark sat on the edge of the bed next to you, waiting for you to say something—anything—with any indication of what he should do next. “I feel bad,” you sniffled, wiping away the tears falling down your face. “We were supposed to get coffee and be happy, but now you’re here watching me fall apart over wasting three years of my life.”
“No, it wasn’t wasted.” Mark shook his head, grabbing your hands and holding them tightly. “You loved him, [First], and I’m sure he loved you too. While it was happening, it was good, and then he messed up. He’s the one who wasted three years, not you. Never you.”
While it hurt to admit, Mark knew how madly in love with Minhee you were. He couldn’t imagine how you felt, believing that all those years spent loving him were a waste, because, when his friends were helping him get over you, they always assured him that loving somebody was never useless.
“How, though? I could’ve been meeting new people and loving them as much as I loved him,” you argued. “I let him tell me who to talk to and who not to talk to, I let him drag me away from my friends, from you, with the full belief that I would be with him forever. Look where that got me, Mark. Walking in on him and the girl he told me I didn’t have to worry about.”
“But look where I am right now?” he responded, squeezing your hands. You looked at him with those big, tear-filled eyes, and Mark found it difficult to ignore the pain he was feeling in his heart. He hated seeing you so sad. “I’m in front of you, even after he told you to stay away. And I’m sure if you reach out to anyone else, try to recreate any relationship he stole from you, they’ll gladly reciprocate. This is not the end of the world, so don’t let yourself feel that way.”
You stared at him, hiccuping every few seconds. Tears flowed down your face like crystal rivers, dripping onto the blankets every couple of seconds. Then, finally, you spoke. “Are you sure?”
“Of course I am. You are more than him.”
-
Mark was beginning to believe Jeno was right.
Maybe he was impatient, maybe he didn’t understand the gravity of the situation, of your relationship with Minhee, but things were going nowhere. Every little thing that reminded you of him sent you into a spiral, and, while you barely cried anymore, you still sulked and shut yourself off. It was excruciating.
Slowly, Mark was realizing it wasn’t easy to help someone get over a breakup when you were in love with them. In fact, it made things unbearably difficult, to the point where he was beginning to dread it. What once was hope became pure pain, and what once was determination became despair.
He didn’t understand why you couldn’t see what was right in front of you, why you couldn’t see him right in front of you. He was tempted to explode, to ask you if Minhee would’ve done the same for you as he was doing. Why wouldn’t you look at him the way he wanted you to? Why can’t you see how he feels?
Mark was going insane, and he didn’t know how to deal with it.
Now, he was on his way to have coffee with you, as you’d insisted. You constantly talked about how guilty you felt for blowing him off, no matter how much he said he didn’t mind and that he understood why you had. Two weeks later, you’d decided that today was the day you finally had a real-life, in-person coffee date.
Somehow, though, Keeho had managed to stop him beforehand.
“I just wanted to talk to you,” Keeho said, motioning for Mark to step into the alleyway next to the café. He assumed Keeho had dropped you off and discreetly waited for him to arrive with the intent of speaking to him as he was now. “About [First].”
“What about her?” Mark responded although he knew what Keeho was going to say. He leaned against the wall of the café, glancing down at the ground before looking back up at Mark.
“You’re in love with her, aren’t you.”
Mark kept quiet, waiting for Keeho to continue.
“Look, man, you don’t have to keep doing this,” he continued, chewing on the inside of his cheek. “I’m sure this is as awful for you as it is for Somi, Ryujin, and I, if not worse. She…she won’t be ready for another relationship for a while, and, as much as you’re nice, I don’t want you to be her boyfriend because she trauma-bonded with you. That’s about as good as a rebound.”
Mark contemplated Keeho’s words, halfway shocked that he wasn’t hurt by the sentiment. He just felt numb.
“I’m not planning on dating her,” Mark finally said. “Not until I know she’s forgotten him, at the very least. I’m not an idiot, and I know my worth. I’m only doing this to help her, okay? I don’t intend on trapping her in a relationship because she’s hurt and clinging onto any semblance of comfort.”
Keeho nodded, letting out a small sigh. “Then I’d rather you distance yourself for a bit. You can hang out with her and stuff, but I ask that you remove yourself from the breakup-damage-control team promptly.”
Mark knew that Keeho probably wasn’t explaining the entire story and that this meant you were probably on your way to using him as a rebound. But, for some reason, he, once again, didn’t care. Even if he was still in love with you, even if he would do anything to call himself yours, he understood how things would end up if he wasn’t careful.
“No, I get it. I’ll just let her know that my friends want to see me around more often and that I think she’s doing better,” Mark nodded, ignoring the slight discomfort he was feeling. “Thanks for talking to me. I appreciate it.”
“No problem,” Keeho said, pushing off against the wall. “If it’s any consolation, I think you’re a good match for her. Better than Minhee, at least.”
“Yeah, thanks, man. I’ll see you later.”
“See you.”
Both Mark and Keeho emerged from the alleyway, walking away from each other without saying another word. Mark didn’t know how he felt, and he didn’t think he ever would. Would he be able to wait? Would he move on? He didn’t know.
You were sitting directly across from the doors, two coffee cups on the table, with one filled to the brim and one half empty. You perked up at the sound of the door opening, a wide smile blooming on your face when you saw him. It made his throat close up and his heart tighten, and Mark was sure he could wait for you for however long he needed to. However long it took for you to forget Minhee. However long it took for you to realize he was right there all along.
“Hi!” you chirped, pushing the cup of coffee closer to the edge of the table as Mark slid into the booth. “How are you?”
For now, he would play friend and pretend like he never felt any differently. Pretend he didn’t want to love you openly, unapologetically, in front of everyone who would tolerate it.
“I’m good, how are you?”
Mark would wait however long you needed to get over your heartbreak and be with him.
