Hi Lock~ I wanted to ask you abt how you got into literature, and how you’d maybe recommend someone else to start? I want to expand on my reading (and also you’ve hyped up Dostoevsky sooo much I’m hooked but I KNOW I’m not at that lvl yet haha) but there’s so many different sources and stuff idrk where to start. I have seen your list of recommendations and other people’s lists as well but Im never sure if they’re a good place if someone is just starting into literature; I’ve been really interested in Picture of Dorian Gray, Jane Eyre and Frankenstein right now, do you think they’d be okay? Did you look at books you knew you’d be into? Or did you try out smth new entirely? Also did you look at any sources online that you could recommend? I know I’ve asked a lot so you of course don’t have to answer them, but please let me know what you think!!

I also wanted to ask, as someone who’s read many classics in literature, in your opinion, how would you define literature? And what do you think makes a book a classic?

hello anon!!! there are so many interesting questions here, i'll try answering them to the best of my abilities!!!!

(how i got into literature)

i'd been neglecting published works for most of my life because i just preferred fanfic way more. it wasn't until a bit into 2021 that i saw this Discourse Causing Post that 'you can't grow as an author if you don't read published works,' or something among those lines. i thought this was really interesting because i'd never given it much thought. around that point, even though writing was a hobby, i felt really motivated to improve. i normally spent no more than a day or two on a story before moving onto the next. which is fine, because fanfic writing is a hobby, but i felt i'd be capable of more if i put in the extra time and effort.

so basically i got into it because i wanted to write my silly little yandere fics better jdfklgjsdg

(recommendations for getting into literature)

i focused on the genre i thought i'd be the most interested in: horror. then i branched out from there. i looked up what people considered must-reads for the genre because i figured that'd be a good place to start. if you know what sort of genres you like, doing some research into its most prevalent/foundational works isn't a bad idea. that's the approach i took. authors throughout the centuries influence and inspire one another, i wanted to be able to map those connections out. this also helps give some context to older books with references that'd be loss on a modern audience.

(how i went about looking into books to see if i wanted to read them)

i research everything like my life's on the line, so i do look into books before i read them. i go for a synopsis that doesn't include spoilers and consider if that's a story i'd get invested in. if not, i'll read some reviews for fresh perspectives. if i'm still kinda meh by then, the book gets passed on.

(defining literature/classics)

UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH literary theory is not my field of expertise ... i'd personally define literature as any written work such as fiction and nonfiction. it can encompass so many things that defining it feels tricky. as for how i'd define a classic, all art is subjective or whatever, but there are stories that just have the It factor. whether that is their cultural impact, or works that are pillars to the genre(s) they were written in. you can see the ripples that it made after its publication.

finally, as for the books you listed (jane eyre, the picture of dorian gray, and frankenstein), i'd highly recommend them!!! all of them are apart of the gothic genre, which is one of my favorites. they've all stood the test of time for good reason.

“I don’t think I need all of that.” His hesitance was clear in his voice as he looked at the pile of clothing Y/N had him pick out. She had sat diligently on her phone, looking every time he came out to give an honest opinion on each piece.

It was a fantasy world for him. He hadn’t ever gotten to shop like this, let alone at a luxury store. Now with this new arrangement, Y/N had insisted on taking him shopping to show him a taste of what he could be having now and because she wanted him to have good clothing to wear to events and such with her. A double whammy, in her book.

The slight look of panic when he realized she was actually planning on buying all of the things she had nodded at was utterly adorable. Her walk over to him had him blinking fast, mentally trying to calculate how much this would cost her but was interrupted by a manicured hand running down his chest.

“Do you like the clothes, Harry?” She murmured, gesturing to the pile with her head. The flush on his cheeks made her smile, toying with the collar of his vintage band tee he had worn out with her today.

“Of course I do. I’m thankful for everything you’ve been doing for me. I just… I don’t want to be greedy.” His voice came out quiet, a little embarrassed. It melted her immediately, a look of concern flashing on her normally calculated poker face. Harry hadn’t asked for much at all. She had stated to take care of his student loan payments and paid off his car. Filled his fridge with groceries. Those things weren’t even a tiny chip in one of her accounts, but to him it was a big deal.

“Sweetheart…” she crooned, using her nail to trace the sharpness of his jaw. “You aren’t being greedy. Not at all. I took you out to shop. I want to buy you pretty things. I have to have you look your best at my side, don’t I? When you come to the country club or my brunch meetings, you represent me. As much as I do adore the vintage look… sometimes you need a more polished one. It just so happens that you love this brand too.” Her even tone calmed him down. This woman seemed to have that touch, that ability with him.

“I make a lot of money, Harry. More than a lot of people can comprehend. You are a worthy person to invest in. Okay? You deserve this, you deserve nice things and someone to treat you well. If you had the means, I’m sure you’d take care of people too. I don’t have many worthy people to take care of, and none of them are doing me favors the way you are.” A saucy grin lit up her face which had his face blushing. They hadn’t done too much at this point but… enough for him to know that their chemistry was off the charts.

“It’s worth it to me to spoil the man who is already making my life so much easier. And far more interesting. I’ve never been more relaxed.” It was true. The mouth she had experienced this morning had been heavenly and she had no plans on letting that tongue go anywhere. “So let’s ring these up and go to the next store. I love the Chelsea boots, but taping the hole in your toe won’t be allowed at the club. They have character but… I’m sure you want something that won’t let the rain in.”

Harry was unused to treatment like this. Never liking to rely on someone but also liking the idea at the same time. He had been working hard his whole life and now someone saw potential in him. Worth. Helping him with being able to focus on his career, though he hadn’t quite quit his one serving job yet- he just thoroughly couldn’t believe he had gotten lucky like this.

“Thank you.” He said quietly, taking her hand and pressing his cheek into it. “I will make sure you know how thankful I am in any way you want. M’just adjusting. It isn’t every day a beautiful woman spoils you.” That got a chuckle from her, thumbing over his stubbly cheek.

“It will be your every day now.”

she had a space where she was posting and creating content that she knew she could rely on to keep her away from spoilers. someone came into the space and ruined that for her. i’m sure if that happened to someone you really liked/was friends with, you’d be mad too? this transcends age lmao

i also dont think you realise how exciting it is to read a book for the first time. to have the thrill of not knowing what’s going to happen. especially a book like lotf, which was written to be consumed like that. many of us had it spoiled to us because of schooling or just a negative environment. why would you wish that for anyone else? why would you try and ruin what got ruined for you for others?

i just don’t understand and i’d honestly love for you to help me get there: what is the benefit in spoiling a book that someone is genuinely excited about reading? what is so fun about that? i thought it was so much more entertaining to engage with alana while she was reading. it was like reading for the first time with her, and i will defend ANY new readers the way i defended her

i think we forget a lot of the time that there’s people behind our screens. people who… in this case, had genuine feelings about not having the book spoiled to them. you really should learn to treat people like people as opposed to just a username or a blog on your device. i think it’ll be a good lesson for you

hello!

so. this is long which is why there is a cut. i feel i ought to foreworn you that i read the entire players handbook cover to cover the summer i turned 11 because i was lonely and autistic. i memorized it (mostly. little rusty on some of the magic rules but whatever). /not sarcastic so! this is EXTREMELY LONG.

first up! your basics:

dungeons and dragons is a tabletop roleplaying game first created in 1974 by gary gygax. that's not so important. what is important is this: it is currently in its fifth edition (shorthanded as 5e). that is the one i know the most about and it is personally the one i think is the easiest to play, but thats my own preference. my biology teacher thinks 5e is bloody stupid and he plays the second edition (2e), which i find much harder and more limiting.

There are three core rulebooks, and a number of supplementary books.

The most important of those three (and the only one you need to know, really, unless you're the one running the game) is called The Player's Handbook (PHB). It contains the rules for building a character and playing them.

Because it will run you upwards of $50USD per copy, here is a pdf of it on archive dot org.

The other two is the Monster Manuel (MM) (a book of all the monsters in the game) and the Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) (a book of how to run a game, but you don't need it as a player). They are here and here.

There are a number of d&d youtubers who have tutorial videos on this type of thing. my favorite is Ginny Di, but there are literally dozens out there.

BASIC TERMS

A Character sheet is the thing you have all the information about your character recorded on. It comes in several variations, but this is a free form fillable pdf version, and this is a free printable (both from the wizards of the coast (wotc) website, but the second is hosted on archive.org) (wotc are the company that owns the copyright to the game).

A class is the vocation of the character. its what they do with themselves, but its not necessarily a job.

A race is the character's species. this is also called their species, but in offical material you'll see it called their race.

A background is how their past shaped the character.

A backstory is that past.

Ability scores are the abilities of the character, they are determined with dice rolls. There are six of them, and many years ago someone explained them with tomatoes and that's still the easiest way to explain them in my opinion. You figure them out by rolling 4d6 and adding up the three highest numbers, for a total of 6 times.

The d20 is the most important; its what you'll use to roll ability checks and saving throws and etc.

If you don't have your own physical dice (they are advalible online, at barnes & nobles, and at your local gaming store, but many people don't have a local gaming store (me)), you can roll them on many websites. My preferred one is this one, but any work. Google has its own built in, too.

MAKING A CHARACTER

So. You have your dice, now what?

Now you make a character sheet! there are many videos online explaining how to do this (there is a lovely one here and here), but i'm going to explain it here how I generally do it.

Step 0- OPTIONAL:

Take your character sheet, and come up with an idea. Who do you want to play? A gay disaster who can shapeshift? a hobbit? a chaotic ginger with too many cats and a habit of making deals with eldritch powers? You can be whatever the hell you want. alternatively, you can look at the options in the PHB first, and go from there.

Step 1- Pick a race/species.

There are well over 30 of these, and I'm not listing them all. But the ones advaliable in the player's handbook are as follows:

Dwarf. Your sterotypical mining, axe wielding, beared fantasy dwarf. ex: Gimli, in Lord of the Rings

Elf. Traditionally depicted as tall, graceful, and living in the woods. Generally have pointed ears. ex. Legolas in Lord of the Rings.

Halfling. Literally just renamed hobbits, so they don't get sued. Known for being short and excellent cooks. ex. Frodo, Sam, Merry, & Pippin from Lord of the Rings. (I can't seperate them, it feels wrong)

Human. We all know what humans are. Generally viewed as very adaptable species in d&d! also in real life. ex. Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Dragonborn. A bipedal species descended from dragons. They're cool as shit. ex. I literally cannot think of one i'm sorry.

Gnome. Known for being very tinkery, small, and causing mischief. Also, for some reason, for being in gardens. ex. Pike Trickfoot from Critical Role.

Half-elf. Half elf, half something else! They generally have a lot of angst, but not always. Sometimes people say they combine the best of both worlds (elf and human), and sometimes people say they have it really shitty. ex. Keyleth from critical role.

Half-Orc. half orc, half something else! I dunno really how to describe them. ex. Fjord Lavorre from Critical Role

Tiefling. A humanoid species with horns and a tail, and often brightly colored skin. Extremely Gender in my opinion.

Step 2- Pick a class.

There are 12 core classes, and one more added in a later book. I'll go over all 13!

ARTIFICER. A magical tinkerer. A bit like leo valdez in pjo? Their core stat is intelligence. In my opinion they're very complicated for a first character ever, but do what you want its your game i do not care.

BARBARIAN. If you want to wear no armor, have an axe (or other weapon), and charge into battle shouting, this is the class for you! its fun and decently simple for first time players, in my opinion. Core stat is Strength (and constitution).

BARD. Someoe who uses the magic of creation to do shit. Also known for seducing anything that moves, but that's optional. Core stat is charisma. Seems simple at first, but they have a lot of spells to manage at later levels, but they're not too hard. The main guy in the d&d movie is one.

CLERIC. They're healers and warriors. Generally have got some sort of divine magic, but don't necessarily have to. Semi-difficult? I haven't ever played one, so I don't know how easy it would be for a first character ever. Main stat is wisdom.

DRUID. Person who turns into animals and respects the enviroment. Basically, the lorax, but less orange and with more turning into animals (druid lovers out there i am sorry for saying y'all are the lorax please don't come after me with pitchforks). they're okay for a first character but they can be a little confusing. Main stats are wisdom (and constitution).

FIGHTER. Someone who fights things. The most basic of the d&d classes, and one of the simplest for first time players, probably, but I haven't ever played one so who knows. Main stats are strength or dexterity.

MONK. Person who punches people a lot. Like Aang from avatar: the last airbender. Main stats are dexterity and wisdom. They seem simple, but one of the mechanics is slightly confusing, but they're still really simple.

PALADIN. Your tradition knight. A guy (gender neutral) in plate armor with a horse and loyalty issues. I love playing paladins so much, they're great. Personally I think they're a little confusing. Main stats are Strength & Charisma.

RANGER. Someone who wanders through the forest and fights things, like strider (but not like aragorn) from lotr. Core stats are wisdom and strength. My first ever character was an elf ranger named Thia Nailo. She was awesome. Rangers can also have pet panthers and shit, and sometimes small dragons (not tiny dragons, though. Like horse sized dragons).

ROGUE. A thief. My second ever character, and the first one who I played for any significant length of time (thia's campaign died out) was a half-elf rogue named Enna Helder-Kromlin. Rogues are a really good class for first time players, I feel like. Core stat is dexterity.

SORCERER. Someone born with magic. Main stat is charisma. They can be a little complicated.

WARLOCK. Someone who made a deal with some sort of higher power (eldritch being, god(s), etc) for magic. they make bad decisions for a living and its awesome. my favorite ever character was an elf warlock named Mara. Her patron lived in a shield and she had a wisdom of 5 but a charisma of 20. Core stat is charisma.

WIZARD. Gandalf. Someone who studied magic and learned it that way. Main stat is intelligence. They can get really complicated, really fast, but they're still a viable option for your first time.

Step 3- Backstory

There are other things to do, but its late and i'm tired. What you need to do from here is figure out what your character's life was like before now. Or, if you dont want to, then get a vibe for their personality or something.

NOW WHAT?

When you have a character, your DM (Dungeon master, the person running the game, the ''narrator'') will give you scenario, and you roleplay your way through it.

Literally anything can happen. It's d&d. the rules are suggestions, not actual rules. Make it what you want it to be!!!!

Gender and pref: I’m a he/she and choose how I present myself based on the setting bc I’m not that open with ppl (yeah, I think it’s important to express yourself but realistically that won’t get me far in certain settings in my country); no gender pref but I’m not too fond of some writing choices when it comes to women in Viv’s works, depends on a character though

Style: kinda rockstar gf vibe? Sometimes softer colours too

Personality, hobbies: I’m social and extroverted. Usually that leaves me as a leader of whatever group I’m in. I have a little bit of a hater in me, but I don’t show it if ppl don’t encourage it. I do like when it’s being enabled though. It’s not convenient when you’re in a position where ppl ask you for opinions and actually follow your guide, yk, if I manage an event I’m not going to go around shit talking everything. It feels nice to have someone who does that though, makes it easier to join in and not feel like a jerk (or at least be jerks together I guess??). I write my own songs and am in a band as a backup vocal. Kinda proud that it’s my band but I need to get better until I step up as anything more. I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I like to tease ppl if given the opportunity. Others say I’m flirty. Bold with it at that. I’m ambitious too. Kind of a big thing but I have npd (if you want to look it up without reading scientific papers, go on tumblr, bc the rest of the internet is filled with ‘demonic narcissism’ bullshit) and it influences the way I am. I care lots about my image and don’t have a ton of empathy. I don’t go kicking puppies, but it’s noticeable how I lack in this department. Sometimes people say I’m ’too nice to have it’ cause i do well with kids and do all the youth group volunteering. Also, I do some martial arts and other sports. Kinda sceptical of romance at this point cause I had lots of it and I don’t mix well with a lot of people, but maybe I could do something serious for once if I had the right person. I try to be responsible and respectful but I have no issue finding my place at a wild party or something. I'm pretty chill in general, but I can be soft-er if I want, like with children or if the few ppl I actually am close with (I've got many friend groups but I struggle to make meaningful connections) need me. Usually I just stay my highly analytical, laid back self and say my silly little comments every once in a while. Heard I’m pretty funny if I want to be. My love language is acts of service. I like small things and I do them a lot. I can do words too, but I don't care for them in return. Like, you can be an asshole (up to a limit, I know my worth) and it’s cool with me if I see you have your ways of caring like putting on a song I like in the car

Likes and dislikes: love movies like Fight Club (my fav), American Psycho and Donnie Darko; hate sharks, they freak me out; my fav book is The Catcher in the Rye; hate it when people push me to open up and be emotional; love music and unironically had a few guys play songs AT me and I actually like that too, tho I get why ppl clown on that

My type: I like people who are more negative than me and aren't afraid to shittalk everything. Just saying whatever, not caring if they offend ppl (up to a point, some issues aren’t debatable ik). Don't really care for morality (to a certain point, again) if you're charismatic and fun to be around, I’m along for the ride and happy to support whatever you get yourself into. I think I would get along with someone who had a little npd too, I like to be able to relate to my partner a bit. If they work somewhat similarly, I don't have to struggle with understanding some stuff, bc I already know how to manage an ego or grandiose behavior. As for looks. Idk, I don’t have a set type. I think maybe ppl that are bigger than me? I’m pretty athletic so it’s not hard, but I guess that’s been a pattern? Also, I do enough of leading as is so in relationships I don’t mind watching from the side and supporting whatever my partner is doing

you're the first anon! And DAMN YES

I ship it!

What made you ship it? Reading The Killing Joke at the ripe old age of eight. My mother thought comics were for kids and bought me a big ass "essential Batman stories" book, which started out with The Killing Joke and it rewired my brain I guess (my Batman experience up to that point had been random episodes of Batman Beyond).

What are your favorite things about the ship? I reckon I'm going to go on a bit of a tangent here. Sorry Anon I don't suppose this was the answer you were hoping for, but I am unable to contain myself :> So being that this is my first DC ship (and it might even be my first ship PERIOD), I'm more of a "I nostalgically ship it from afar" than an active, fanfiction-reader/writer kind of fan, but surely my enjoyment has always been rooted in the fact that it's a villain/hero situation where they're two sides of the same coin, at the point where they can't exist without one another. I ship Batman with 50% of his rogue gallery tbh, and unless it's just 'cause it looks hot, it tends to be about how Bruce tries to see the human side of these people (sometimes because he's known them since before they were rogues), how he extends a helping hand when he can, how he refuses to kill them because there has to be a way to rehabilitate them (and sometimes there is, and it's just the tragic nature of these stories which prevents the "rogues" from getting their own form of happy ending). This happens with the Joker too, and the most memorable occasion in which this happens is after Joker tortured and crippled Barbara (someone Bruce is supposed to love and care for), beside what he also does to Jim Gordon (also someone Bruce is supposed to be friends with). Joker himself tells Batman more or less "I hurt a defenseless girl, I terrorized an old man, what are you waiting for just beat the shit out of me" to which BRUCE SAYS NO. He says no because "you're just like me except you had one bad day too many, and I know you can get better, and I want to help you". We all know how The Killing Joke ends, with the proverbial joke and them laughing like maniacs about it (I have the panels always around so yall can experience them with me)

And the image of them laughing together is forever seared into my brain, especially because even if this guy did whatever the hell he did (and will keep doing it), Bruce replied with empathy and compassion. A monster, the irredeemable one who's never going to stop before anything because he's not even human, at this point he's the embodiment of everything wrong there can be in a person - he just got smothered with compassion and it almost worked. The "joke" (two madmen escape the loony bin, etc) is Joker's way to say "I'm sorry I really want to take your hand but I can't, I just can't do it", and Bruce understands this and for a brief moment of six panels it's just two friends laughing together. And that part of me which will always see itself in the ugly, irredeemable, rejected monster was and will always be so profoundly fulfilled by this.

Of course I am also not immune to the whole "you need me, you love me and you can't live without me" thing to which Batman reacts by kicking and screaming that it's not true, but which is indeed true and in every story in which Joker actually dies, Bruce cannot for the love of him cope one single day without him. This post puts it briefly but beautifully, go give it a look if you're rabid a fan of the dynamic such as I am.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? Liking this ship (and Joker in general) is unpopular in and of itself lol, but I guess I can say that my unpopular preference is that as much as I ship them, I don't see sex involved in any part of their relationship which is more based off of beating the shit out of each other (or laughing about a dumbass joke in a stormy night in an abandoned amusement park), and being unable to let the other go when the chance presents itself. I see sex as essentially unnecessary in their dynamic, but it's also true that I don't really peruse Batjokes content beside the occasional fanart, so the sex part might have just not clicked with me yet.

tolkien: tough one. honestly, i feel like due to the nature of the fandom most people have defensible readings of most characters, even if they're not my own? to the extent tht people get characters wrong it's mostly by not thinking abt them very much! I'm inclined to pick Galadriel, though, bc she's also in LotR and so you get LotR fans thinking they can speak to first or second age galadriel, and then u get silm fans overcorrecting and ignoring third age galadriel entirely, and ofc there's the various Sexist Archetypes she gets shoved into by virtue of Being A Woman. actually a Lot of the women in tolkien are characters ppl get wrong a lot. elwing! míriel! indis! idril! lúthien! niënor! haleth! And So On Forever And Ever. this is again mostly due to Simply Not Thinking About Them Very Much tho

wktd: tbh the fandom gets the wktd girls pretty solidly. no real notes here. benefits from being a small fandom for a game with Three characters all of whose issues are pretty spelled out for you & constitute the central plot.

glowfic: im gonna be honest i do not feel confident to speak for other ppl's characters and state what ppl get right/wrong..! like idk man maybe im the one getting them wrong. ppl mostly dont like... write fic or make headcanons for each others glowfic in a way where the author isnt involved in having opinions about it? so if someone was mischaracterizing a glowfic character idk how i would know rly

hannibal: all of them @_@ no one understands this show like i do and it's a perpetual frustration... im gonna throw out abigail as my answer tho bc she sooooo often gets reduced to like, part of the murder family, which ignores soooooo much of her storyline and how much she did not (uncomplicatedly) want that. her relationship with will is So So Complicated but ultimately she likes freddie more than she likes will in some ways! and at least back when i was in the fandom ... ppl dont get that or just treat it as like, a flaw or misunderstanding to be corrected.

tma: ooooo this is a tough one. honestly the fandom was big enough that it's hard for me to say No One in the fandom got characters & in a lot of cases there was the question of like, does the fandom not understand X or do i just not seek out very many fics abt X... e.g. i havent read any tma fic that got georgie very well but also i havent read any georgie-centric tma fic! kind of a skill issue on My part rly!

mcelroy + polygon content: oh this is a trip down memory lane. everyone writes taako very few people write taako well. i'm not a taako fan and instead had Cares About Less Popular Characters disease but i did feel for taako enjoyers for this. i didnt really read polygon rpf so i can't speak to that side of things.

poetry and short stories: i don't think there are rly characters Everyone In The Fandom gets wrong for this tbh. like thats just not rly a coherent thing

the untamed/mdzs: SONG LAN...... i am not even a big song lan fan im a xuexiao stan first and foremost. but good lord. man has like 2 character traits and the ppl writing fic for him cant even remember those! also lwj but with the disclaimer that i have a very specific read of novel!lwj that just doesnt rly apply to untamed!lwj. which most people are writing for. i guess this is also true of song lan but i have more of a sense of "if you care a lot about song lan you should do your due diligence in hunting for scraps of characterization" whereas caring about untamed!lwj and not reading the book is like. yeah okay fair enough. to me.

tgcf: ooooh. hard one. my immediate instinct is mu qing bc i follow the tag and have to read way too much mu qing slander but i have in fact read good mu qing fic.... might stand by that anyway tho. the tgcf tag is like 50% mu qing slander by volume and it makes me sad. mu qing get behind me bby i'll protect u ;-;

dream SMP: hahaha. ha. what character DOESN'T dsmp fandom get wrong. it gets tommy wrong it gets techno wrong it gets phil wrong it gets puffy and niki and hannah wrong it gets dream wrong it gets purpled wrong it gets quackity wrong it gets sam wrong it gets schlatt wrong it gets karl wrong it gets george wrong it gets wilbur wrong it gets LITERALLY EVERYONE wrong. constantly. the only times it doesn't get someone wrong is when it's forgotten that they exist at all (this is about the eggpire but it's also about eryn and fundy and jack manifold and i'm sure many many others i'm not currently remembering). im giving the prize for Getting It Wrong to phil, though. i don't even LIKE phil. but everyone who writes him gets him wrong. they are just writing Generic Bad Dad or Generic Good Dad. he's got traits! i promise!

ok actually since this one's my current special interest i'll go a bit more in depth. tommy's rude & annoying & a fighter, he very very rarely has the sort of fawn response ppl write. techno is funny but he's got emotions and he is usually acting based on those emotions; if you're writing him in s1 he's less based than you think and if you're writing him in s3 he's more based than you think. phil has traits other than being a dad and also if you can't accurately identify which characters he is and is not a dad to then you don't get to write him. puffy, niki, and hannah all have traits other than being women; no, "therapist", "girlboss", and "mom friend" don't count. purpled is not particularly a Manipulated Minor TM, he's an amoral mercenary, he's kinda fucked up by isolation but he's more like punz than he is like tommy or tubbo. none of quackity, sam, and dream are one-dimensional characters whose only trait is Sadistic Abuser but also if you write them without acknowledging that they're sadistic abusers (with the exception of writing about early dsmp/before The Horrors) then you're doing it wrong. same goes for schlatt but with the addition of "he should not under literally any circumstances talk like he's got a tumblr". karl's more of a bitch than that. so's george. wilbur is more of an asshole and less of a creep than that. i could go on literally forever the dsmp fandom gets every single character wrong & it is my burden to be right about all of them u_u

I have read basically all your answers and o-sahiba's answers in reblog they were amazing,i would like to ask one question please feel free to ignore if you don't feel like answering this, but there's something wierd happening to me and it's just something i don't understand, since the end of 2021 wherever I go I see Paris not that real one but like in pics, name, or Eiffel tower figure,key chain like i everywhere it's weird but idk how to explain but even if I ignore it still came from somewhere in front of me and I tried to ignore it and I told my mother about this and last month she was out shopping with her friend and they were talking about me and suddenly she saw Eiffel tower figure in this shop they just enter and when she came back she told me that this happen and we just laugh abt it because she didn't trusted me first and I m telling you just spend and hour with me and you will see either this name (Paris) ,or the Eiffel tower figure or picture or something related to it will come in front of you and I will keep showing itself as long as you will stay with me, so many instances like that happen wherever I go something related to this came in front of me and it's not making any sense to me and I decide to forget about everything and i thought let's study so i open my ncert read the first three page and guess what I see again Paris in chemistry book. Wow, that’s really something and a lot of Paris in it. I don’t think I can make any logical meaning out of all that you’ve experienced. Everything happening with you may just be a coincidence because I don’t think every other person who meets you will go through the same. You can try reading some complete non relevant books or go somewhere else with someone else and break the chain.

If it still continues then I would love to know what what happened and if it ends then too I would like to know what you did after which the chain of Paris ended. It’s weird but very fascinating.

Ah. I think I'm going to be very disappointing, because Guardian is one of the very few fandoms I don't have any obvious bones to pick with. Most of my 'ooof he would not say that' moments come from the person clearly being a drama-only fan and me basing my opinions on the book.

...That said there ARE common opinions that irritate me, one being Zhao Yunlan depicted as this easy player type. Yes, he's horny, but once he's dating someone that's all focused on his partner. The book is pretty clear on this one: he may not be great at keeping a serious relationship but he does want one, and he's very loyal.

13. worst blorboficiation

I'd say Shen Wei, but then again, that's mostly on the drama. It not so much sanded off his edges as attacked him with an industrial cheese grater and several hecto-litres of bleach.

Hmm... I'm drawing a blank on this one. Other fandoms usually have much more specific things that drive me up the wall (like the weird amount of cheating fics in the TGCF fandom or the watery modern AUs in Les Mis) but I couldn't really pinpoint anything like that.

hello matthew!! :D this ask isnt related to the little game u made unfortunately but id like to ask for some advice from someone who probably has to read a lot for school!!

i finished reading a classic of literature recently, jane austens persuasion. having repeated myself many times today, it was a very good thought provoking book. except that i didnt really realise that until i read the introduction of the book where they discuss her techniques and how she handles the themes!! argh.. in fact while i was readin the whole thing i didnt even really know what to feel! i knew about the instances of titular persuasion but i wasnt even really sure what they were saying with nuance...

since im so troubled by my lack of sensitivity and find no help elsewhere on the interwebs, as someone who i find can parse the complex muddled text of enstars with clarity, what should i do to become a more sensitive reader! or rather how do u read matthew?

hi lab! im a lil honored that u hold me in such high regard bc honestly, i dont always feel that my literary analysis skills are up to par! though i think thats an opinion shared by many but i often end up in the same position as you and even my professors say the same thing where they have to reread books before they start to really delve into analysis. its p normal, honestly. a lot of themes in literature are largely opinionated so some people pick up patterns faster than others and sometimes two readings can conflict with one another. it happens! one reading may be more clearly supported by evidence within the text but analyzing literature usually takes a lot of practice more than anything, but sometimes going back to the basics rlly helps and focusing on which critical theory may be applicable. could you maybe analyze the text through a character? perhaps the psychoanalytic theory may help! are gender roles present within the text? maybe looking at it through a feminist critical lens may give you a good ledge to start off. theres also formalism, post-colonialist, Marxist theory, eco-criticism, etc... the world is your oyster and having trouble with analyzing a text is normal! we're not all-knowing and sometimes it helps to look at what other people have to say will help you most of all.

also i asked my friend @cupidneos who is insanely smart for her advice since i bet that she would have something to say (also shes also a jane austen fan) and this is what she said:

i do wanna say that you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself since Persuasion is easily one of her hardest texts to really extend and make sense of so it’s no fault of your own … literature that uses free indirect discourse to hint towards our knowledge of character tends to be harder to understand bc of how limited that info can be! that being said, not being able to place our finger on something until it’s highlighted is completely okay! that’s what the introduction is there for; to help you out. there’s no set list of criteria to being a “more sensitive reader” since the phenomenon of reading itself is so mercurial. with practice i’m so certain that u will get a better sense of where to look for those literary themes. and don’t sell urself short in doing so either! if u find a passage important, pursue it!!! doesn’t matter what everyone else says abt it hehe

completely changing my stance on spoilers (hyperbole) because fundamentally i’m not a person that is bothered by spoilers in appropriate contexts i think & there are many flavors of spoilers that are imo permissible (respecting ofc that some ppl hate them im talking about receiving spoilers) & i think the text should stand on its own. but there are situations where people are so cavalier about deeply relevant reveals/twists/whatever, that are quite… disrespectful to the work.

like say you have this narrative where you spend the whole time thinking one thing but then something happens where it’s revealed the information you’ve been getting the whole time is wrong in some way and now that you know it, you can never go back, but having that change in perspective *and* having that initial reading (or whatever) experience was quintessential to the themes/narrative/etc (especially themes in this case). like i don’t think that should be spoiled (unless someone is like. asking. or you’re having a specific public conversation abt it and they like overhear or something but can leave. like that sucks but it’s also like. what can you do) and the act of spoiling those things just misses? doesn’t care? for the mechanical aspect of the reveal & what it does retroactively, practically, and for any future readings.

and like i get it i’m sure i’ve spoiled things like this for people by accident bc it’s not like i ever tag spoilers for stuff when im ranting to the void about whatever on here. but the specific context for this situation was advertising a book in a comments section of a post not about the book. and the recommendation itself was based on this super important reveal and it just so happened to be a book that i am in the middle of so it sucks

and i think most people are good about acknowledging/recognizing these moments. i say often “i’m not bothered by spoilers” but im also used to hearing (and saying) “i get it but this spoiler greatly impacts your experience. it’s relevant that you already have opinions on something before you learn more” or something along those lines. it’s just when it occurs to me, it always happens to be something i’m super invested in and would’ve thought was like the best twist ever ever

(this was my fatal mistake)#and then i go later to open my phone and someone is like ‘oh yeah i was shocked when that happened. here is the specific line btw’ and bc #i’m in the middle of the book i have enough context to understand exactly what’s going to happen #like that’s my fault for not closing out the app but like how could i know and it’s like i’m mad but at who #and it is a situation where commenting ‘spoilers for book’ would be the same as saying the spoiler itself so really i just shouldn’t have #read the comments. but am i supposed to just not do anything for as long as it takes me to read the book?? that’s completely impractical #which is why i’m so cavalier about spoilers overall bc i think the text should stand on its own even when stuff like this accidentally #happens. but if the text relies on the mechanic of ignorance and later reveal i think that’s impressive not bad #AGHHHH it’s complicated and i’m mad…#this is how i feel about the ******** remake too. taking out the reveal (paraphrasing) is… ruining the #narrative is too hardcore but is what i think #see i almost did it myself :(#and yk what it’s also about **************

I don’t post everything abt my life—nor do many people—especially not about my trauma or counselling I’m doing. However I do go to counselling and talk to a medical professional about how best to approach life (an unbiased, professional opinion from a therapist/counsellor is something everyone would benefit from imo, both for past, present, and future stresses they’re dealing with).

I’m not sure what specifically you’re referring to that I need to get help for, but I’m going to take a guess (judging by other anon hate I’ve gotten) that it’s due to age gap ships or shipcest!

For each of those, I tag it all so that it can be blacklisted, and I openly ask that people tell me if they need something tagged. That’s my part in the censorship process, from there it’s other people’s responsibilities to tailor their own internet experiences.

Also, I want to reiterate that the taboo or angsty things I write are entirely fictional. Fiction is used in many ways, and sometimes it’s used to illicit feelings or emotions by portraying things that are dangerous. Slasher movies, murder mysteries, A Series of Unfortunate Events, even Harry Potter, they have things that should NEVER happen in real life. But fortunately those characters are fiction, and they can be put through the wringer while the real existing people who read that fiction can explore the situation and the resulting emotions in a safe place, where they can close the book whenever they want.

Okay, this is a bit of rambling, but I figured I’d respond to this ask with some genuine thoughts.

tldr: fiction isn’t reality, fiction =/= wanting to do something irl, tailor your internet experience, dark fiction allows someone to explore ‘negative’ emotions in a safe place where no real person is the target.

What shook Ainosuke the most was the gossip that he and Tadashi looked closer than before. To the maids' eyes they looked like a married couple. This was preposterous of course! He and Tadashi dont even talk abt the things that matter. All they talk about is work.

"And the way Kikuchi-san looks at the master! Ah! Ainosuke-sama looks at him the same way. Maybe it's mutual." Ainosuke heard one of the maids say one time when he eavesdropped on their gossip. This emboldened him somehow.

When they were about to go home from a party meeting, Ainosuke didn't waste any time, he immediately proposed to Tadashi.

"Puppy, why don't we go out?"

Tadashi flashed him a dumbfounded look in the front view mirror.

"Excuse me Ainosuke-sama,"

"I mean, let's date."

"What?"

"Date me. Don't you want to try?"

"But you wont gain anything from dating me."

"I don't need to gain anything."

"But things will remain the same and I don't think I suit you. I am a man."

Things will change for sure."

"I don't mind if this is just a temporary thing."

Tadashi was overwhelmed. He tried to reason out, saying how bland their relationship would be since Tadashi is a boring person etc etc.

"You're wrong. It won't be boring. You're going to love me, and I'll love you even more." Tadashi couldn't refuse anymore so they dated seriously. And then they lived happy ever after.

Ainosuke, conflicted with his burgeoning feelings for Tadashi tried to do date while still being f buddies with Tadashi. When he was about to do it with the woman he bailed out and went back to Tadashi.
