Is it okay if I ask for a request for a print someone once asked you? Where in the Shepherd of Los Muertos AU where a rival God kidnaps Puss? And Death comes in, sickles slashing to find his cat chained up and gagged in the God’s grip?
Ooo, I like the request! I was never planning on writing something like this for SoLM, but now I suppose I shall!

The last thing Puss remembered was being at a party. Well, to call it a party would be overly generous- it was more of a gala, with subdued music, quiet conversation in which was a nightmarish minefield of things that would offend to venture, and people dressed far too elaborately to do anything.
Puss himself had been dressed in a restrictive black gown, with a high neckline that tucked underneath his red fabric collar, a tight, corset bodice, with a silver sickle shaped brooch, encrusted with diamonds over the left breast. The sleeves had puffed out at the shoulder in a leg of mutton shape, and tapered tight to his arm at his elbow down, having three, black fabric covered, decorative buttons on the outside of his wrist on both arms. The gown had had several layers of tull petticoats, all black, and a hoop skirt to add extra volume, with the outer skirt, like the rest, being black silk, and the bottom hem having the repeating pattern of a wolf chasing a cat. He'd had a circlet on as well, a dreadful thing made of black twisting metal with blood red rubies.
He woke up somewhere very different to where he'd last been.
The tabby awoke groaning, his mouth as dry as sandpaper, and a headache pounding behind his stinging eyes. His arms were being uncomfortably forced over his head, and he could feel cold manacles aorund his wrists, while he was kneeling on cold ground, his knees aching in protest.
Puss smacked his lips, blearily blinking, and looking around. He was in a small cell, with metal bars in front of him, a single, burning sconce on the wall past those bars. It's flickery light barely reached Puss, leaving him in mostly darkness. The cat was now nude as well, he realised, though it was hardly as consequential as it could've been, if he were humanoid. All he wore was the red collar with a silver tag, and, he discovered with a flex of his left paw, his wedding and engagement ring. No doubt because those items could not be stripped from him.
He did not recongise the cell he was in- when Death had locked him in a similar situation before, he'd been in the usual room he was put in for punishment, but this room... it did not even feel as though it were in Limbo, the air missing the strange stillness distinctive of that realm. Besides, he generally had some kind of warning for punishments. The last thing he remembered was stepping away from the 'party' for a moment.
Puss had been kidnapped, he came to the conclusion of. Who would dare kidnap him, he did not know, but he could tell he had been.
And as if on cue, he heard the click of either heels, or hooves, on stone. His ears perked up, and for a brief moment Puss debated feigning unconciousness, before a heavy wooden door scrapped open, and he decided he'd rather ask questions.
Out into view, stepped a small, brown rabbit, wearing heeled sandals, a crisp white toga, and a gold, leaf crown atop her head. The Goddess of Spring, Puss recongised. He'd heard her be called Vers once or twice by her husband, the God of Fertility, but by the way she'd glared at him for that, it was probably best to stick with Spring.
Spring startled upon seeing him, her green eyes widening for a moment, before setting into something cold and hard. "Lesser Lord," she cooly greeted him by his title alone.
"Lady Spring," Puss returned, voice cracking part way through. He refused to feel embarrassed for it, however- it was her fault for letting him get so dehydrated. "I must say, I was not expecting you."
She half-shrugged, as though agreeing with him. "I was not expecting to be put in such a situation this became necessary," Spring replied. Puss raised an eyebrow, prompting her to speak. "I'm sure you understand, this is far from personal-"
"You hate me, Spring, let's not kid ourselves," Puss interrupted with a roll of his eyes. Spring glared at him, pulling a pair of golden gloves from a hidden pocket in her toga, and slowly pulling them on, one by one.
Spring sniffed haughtily, before going on to speak as if uninterrupted, "You husband has crossed me for the last time. I am sick of his... his constant agression! He's taken too many of my fairies for me to let be."
Puss sighed, and rolled his eyes. "Okay. And so why am I involved?" he asked, "I do not do any reaping." The tabby scoffed as Spring, under her breath, mumbled an insult about him 'being lazy'.
"I am using you to hurt him. I'm luring him in to them kill you in front of him," she replied firmly.
Puss waited a beat, expecting her to say something more, but when she didn't, he burst into cackling laughter. Spring's face morphed into one of offence, but Puss paid that no mind, much to engrossed in his own morbid mirth.
"What? Why are you laughing?" Spring demanded harshly, putting her paws on her hips and striking a more threatening pose.
"Are you stupid?" Puss asked her, looking at her with bemusment. Spring's offence turned into apocolyptic rage. "You must be."
Spring grabbed the bars, and threw open the previously seamless door so hard it banged against the stone wall. Puss flinched away at the lound sound, metal ringing in his ears. The rabbit strode into the cell, and Puss pulled himself up a bit, opening his mouth to say something biting, before he was cut off by Spring slapping him across the face, and then grabbing his chin roughly.
"How dare you speak to me like that, you impudent little half-mortal!" Spring yelled, snarling in his face as her claws dug into the soft underside of his chin. His face stung hot where she'd slapped him, and he knew he'd have a nasty bruise there for a while.
Not much appreciating that, he hissed, both as a cat does, and with words right after, "You are incredibly stupid if you think Death is going to leave you alive after this." While Puss was not generally one to threaten people with Death, he wasn't above it either. Then again, was it a threat, or a warning?
Spring scoffed, rolling her eyes. "He will not kill me," she told him smugly, "I am far too important. Lady Fate would have his disgusting dog head on a platter."
Puss acquiesced with a slight incline of his head, though Spring did not allow him to move far, and tightened her hold of his chin in response. "Did you forget what he did to Lighning?" Puss asked her in a deceptively light tone. By the widening of her eyes, she had, in fact, forgotten.
Death had cut off both of Lighning's hands, after the lower god had decided it would be funny to pretend to be Death and attempt to sleep with Puss. Puss had immediately cottoned on that something wasn't right, as Death had never been so genuinely sweet to him, but had somewhat played along out of curiousity. Death had walked in on it, after Lighning had convinced Puss to go to another room with him, and upon seeing Lightning holding Puss against the wall with his paw underneath the tabby's skirts, had attacked and nearly killed the other god.
It had, in all, been a surprisingly funny affair, in which Life had had to step in and drag Death off of Lightning, and Puss played the terrified and tricked husband. The bite of claim on his shoulder had burned for weeks after, as Death kept re-biting it, and was the only reason Puss regretted going along with it all.
Quite suddenly, Spring slapped Puss again, on the other side of his face, and shouted, "Shut up!" at him. Her eyes were a bit wild, and as Puss flexed his jaw, both sides of his face now stinging, she conjured a gold, silk piece of fabric.
Just as Puss opened his mouth to speak, Spring suddenly shoved the fabric into his maw, and deftly tied it tight at the nape of his neck. "Mggh?"
A low, long howl echoed through, interuppting their now onesided conversation, and both the half-mortal and god perked up at the sound, both of them with apprehension on their faces. Spring swore under her breath, and looked back down at him, expectantly. Puss just shrugged.
She released his chin, and scuttled away from him, brushing her paws against her toga as she ran to the cell door. Spring stopped in her tracks as the wooden door out of view scrapped open. For a tense moment, nothing came of it, both Spring and Puss watching the door, though Puss only able to see the general area of the door, with trepadation.
Cautiously, Spring took a few steps back.
And as if on cue, a sharp, mournful, dangerous whistle filled the air, echoing through the small cell, bouncing off the walls and drilling its way deep under goosebump covered flesh. Puss' fur stood on end, his eyes thin slits, as Spring stumbled back, making distance between herself and the door as fast as possible.
"L-Lord Death-!" she squeaked, panic clear on her face and in her voice. Puss couldn't help but feel a bit vindicated at her fear, though it was mostly overwhelmed by his own, as he watched the wolf step into view.
Death had his hood pulled fully up, shadowing his face, save for his long muzzle and glowing red eyes. His two sickles were held drawn at his side, and he twirled them as the song he whistle dwindled to a stop. The silence hung heavy and thick in the air, before being broken by the greater god, in a deep, angry, rumbling voice, saying, "You have something that belongs to me."
"Heh, do I?" Spring asked, her nervous panic growing more evident by the way she shifted from foot-to-foot as though about to run. It would be futile to try, however, and would likely just make it worse. Never a good idea to tempt a pursuit predator into chase, after all.
Death growled, pulling his lips back in a vicious snarl as he advanced. "Yes." Spring yelped, then darted to the side, only to scream in pain as Death lashed out with a sickle, slicing against her middle and chest, sending her toppling to the ground.
But Death paid the whimpering rabbit no more mind, swiftly closing the distance between himself and the cat, who shrunk back fearfully in teh face of him. "Oh, mi gatito," Death cooed, a far-cry from the deadly monster he'd been before, "Look at you..."
His paw brushed along Puss' cheek, the tabby wincing at the slight pressure on the bruise. Death looked at him with confusion, for a moment, before understanding, followed by pure rage, filled his eyes, and he whirled around with a snarl towards Spring...
Only to find her not there, a trail of golden blood leading out the door in her place instead. Death took a single step forward, before huffing, and sheathing his sickles at his waist with a flourish, before truning back to Puss. He grabbed the chains where they pegged to the wall, and roughly ripped them out, sending particules of stone down onto Puss' head. The cat flinched, squeezing his eyes shut to try and prevent any rubble from getting into them.
He meowed, the noise muffled by the gag, as he was suddenly picked up by the wolf, and cradled to his chest. "There we go amor~
Death crooned, eyes soft in the disgusting facsimile of love, one that made Puss' stomach turn with nausea as sickenly sweet fear wafted off him, no doubt like a drug to the god. "All safe and sound now~"
Puss would, in all honestly, prefer to going back to taking his chance with Spring over this.

Fire Emblem Engage Cross-Swap AU
Omigosh, it's happening.
So, Cross-Swap. Also known as "we swapped Firene and Elusia, and Brodia and Solm, among other things".
Let's start with the introductions: the Royals! Here they are all together:

And now, for more individual details under the cut:
Ivy: "Calming Rose"
A reserved, soft-spoken princess of Firene than can often be found in the gardens, a cup of tea in one hand and a novel in the other. Losing her mother the day that her sister was born left her battling anxiety and the fear of abandonment for a large portion of her childhood. However, through trips to visit the sleeping Divine Dragon in Lythos, she could find solace in a friend that would listen to her fears, never judge her, and remain ever by her side. While still plagued by ghosts of the past, time and therapy have allowed her to tame some of her fears, and she endeavors to grow into the image of the unshakeable, ever-benevolent ruler that her people see in her.
As for her retainers, I imagine Zelkov could have been an assassin before going into medicine (friendly reminder that we have Jean in base game from Firene), and Kagetsu... honestly it's still in development, but he could come from the islands where the Divine Paralogues happen.
Hortensia: "Budding Charm"
The second princess of Firene, and while cheerful and sociable at times, she can also appear oddly demure and analytical depending on the situation. While she never had the chance to know her mother personally, many people take every chance to remind her just how much she resembles her. Even with her father stepping up to fight constant battles of comparisons throughout her life, she still finds herself torn between her enjoyment of cute and artsy things and her desire to be recognized as her own person, and struggles with self-acceptance and finding who she is or should be. Dislikes conflicts and arguments, and always doing her best to encourage others to pursue their passions and cheer them up like she tried to do for her sister for so many years.
Goldmary is going to have a FIELD DAY in Firene (she loves chores, for context).
Probably Rosado as well (all those beautiful flowers to paint...) Now as for how they met... to be determined.
Timerra: "Humbling Force"
The crown princess of the Queendom of Bordia and an advocate for diplomacy and change in a stubborn, unchanging country. Used to skip training when she was young to roam the streets and look for people to help, only to be faced with closed doors and a home that consistently found her to be too weak for their liking. Though naturally very strong, she cannot escape the impression left by her "irresponsibility", and remains in the constant loop of trying to prove herself and still never being enough for the court. Hardened and unerringly dutiful on the surface, but she still adores singing, shopping, and exploring the mountainscape on horseback, sometimes sneaking out on fishing and camping trips with her brother and proceeding to scare away the fish with their constant laughter.
Merrin could be a noble who got her way into knighthood by escaping her duties and meeting Timerra one day.
Panette definitely won the tournament to become her retainer. She did so by busting her way out of the streets despite her... parents... for her and her brother's sake.
Fogado: "Magnetic Militant"
The silver tongued, strategic minded prince of Brodia that believes in his sister's ideals more than anyone. Through constant, covert endeavors to train his body, sharpen his tongue, and support his sister, the court was often pleased by his prowess and began to favor him over his sister and flooded the two with constant comparisons. And now, caught between trying to shake off their disappointment in her and keep his hold on the court, he feels lost and can't find where to turn, though getting him to drop his act and admit it is a game all on its own. Still, their bond remains unbreakable, if not growing stronger, with both knowing just how hard the other works and laughing off as much of their troubles as they can manage.
Bunet became a retainer in the same tournament as Panette (yes, he lost against her), as the Sibbies are extremely close age-wise. Perhaps as a way to help his family after his village was raided by bandits? Would make a nice parallel to Saphir.
Pandreo was found and got out of his terrible situation via Panette and the Sibbies. He's grateful for all of them, while his horrendous strength is not helping him in the court.
Alfred: "Snowy Hope"
Elusia's bubbly and ever-optimistic crown prince, and the kingdom's beloved "beacon of light". Chronic illness forced him to spend most of his childhood indoors and away from the harsh weather of the land, leaving him with a weak constitution, but ample time to study and perfect his magic. With his sister's research, a magical "medicine" could be used to improve his quality of life, but never quite curing his illness. Because of this, his family still proposes the Fell Dragon's "miracle" to permanently extend his life, and pushing against this, he chooses to secretly worship the Divine and make the most of the life he has. Dedicated to his country and pure of heart to a fault, one may consistently find him soaring the skies on his pegasus, visiting his people, captivating children with his magic tricks, and rescuing any and all who need help despite the toll it takes on him.
He'd be a Pegasus Mage Knight of sorts, being able to use Lances, Tomes, and Staves upon promotion. Glass Cannon type, keep him far away from archers.
Etie could be a member of the Elusian court! Appointed to Alfred instead of Céline like in base game, but now she can throw hands. And break archers for her liege's sake while at it.
Boucheron... perhaps there could be something like the Village of the Fair Folk, but for hunky people? Either way, snow and forests are not helping if his sense of direction is still horrendous.
Céline: "Icy Guardian"
Described by others as calculating and almost cruel, but rather sentimental and compassionate underneath her icey façade. Though only the half-sister to the crown prince, she lives with the expectation of taking the throne for herself one day and does everything in her power to see that it will never happen. Balancing political ambition, magical research, and physical training with her wyvern has left her with many sleepless nights and contending with far more nightmares. Though she fears the potential outcomes of war, and perhaps developed a slight vendetta against archers, she believes that the Fell Dragon can help her land and family where the Divine could not. Enjoys art and painting, capturing the fleeting moments of the world's beauty and the memories of her brother and friends before they might dull and fade.
I imagine she could work well in a similar class from Zelestia, as in a wyvern rider with access to Swords and Tomes.
Don't have much on Chloé and Louis, while they could have met at the Academy like Hortensia with Rosado and Goldmary in base game.
Mintavia and I joked that Chloé is responsible for 99% of the trinkets in Alfred's hidden Divine shrine. She just picked stuff she found interesting during her flights with the siblings, and he gladly took them.
Diamant: "Sand's Scion"
Solm's steadfast and amicable crown prince and regarded by his people as practically perfect. Incredibly versed in negotiating and diplomacy, which may or may not stem from growing up too quickly and being forced to calm a few heated arguments between his father and the neighboring king of Firene. Though he adores traveling and the stories and banter with his friends that come with it, his father's impulsive travels to fix their bandit issues have left him as the main person to take care of politics and the "King of Solm'' in every way except in title. Still, when he is able to leave, folks say that his laughter can be heard from all across the desert, described by some as the "Racket of Solm".
He met Jade in one of his rare travels, then Amber in another. Jade is still mostly a writer, but also a keeper of precious things (she has been tasked with safekeeping the Emblem Ring once or twice).
Amber loves camels now. He's still as interested in legends, and as clumsy and able to get into trouble as ever, though.
Alcryst: "Desert Shade"
A perceptive, unbelievably friendly young man that, while highly regarded, often has to hide his identity as the second prince of Solm. A comforting presence in the harsh desert, he's always willing to lend an ear to other's issues, but attempting to do the same for him and his own feelings will leave one entirely empty-handed. However, any bandit that has had the misfortune of crossing his path can attest to how quickly that friendly face can drop when danger threatens those around him, especially his family. Constantly roaming the desert with his retainers to both lend a hand to those in need and gathering valuable intel about the entire continent, keeping his homeland safe and preventing threats from setting foot inside their borders. And with his reports come many, many stories and a solid excuse to return home every once in a while and visit with his brother.
Bow Wolf Knight? Bow Wolf Knight. With Daggers, of course.
Citrinne is still his cousin, and nothing in the world could separate them. She doubles as his confidant, and is the most attuned to how he really is under the surface.
Lapis was met after a bandit raid on a village near her home, as she helped with the reconstruction efforts with her strength and ability to make stuff out of scraps. Perhaps one day she will discover more about her liege.
Naturally, more could come as Mint, Luna and I decide on the classes of the Royals that still need to be determined, get more details on the retainers that still need exploring, and as we explore another important swap in the AU. Stay tuned!

AU cohabitation: week 3
dealing with boredom
Some context:
❗ little flashback, but some backstory is that before shit went to hell, they were on pretty good terms. They weren't best friends or anything, but they did like each other to some extent. And then their retainers died and they were corrupted so...yeah
Alcryst used to be little meow meow...and then he became smug little meow meow....Fogado used to be quiet and serious (since Solm was implied to be strict) so obv he never pursued any relationships. And then he became. uh yeah
Currently neither of them are corrupted, however, they still retain their corrupted demeanors because....they don't know how else to act around each other 💀 they're just like "it would be awkward to go back to being nice so I'll keep pretending to be mean" and thus this happens

Pokemon AU ideas:
Firene is known for Grass and Fairy Types
Brodia is known for Steel, Rock, and Fighting Types
Elusia is known for Ice, Ghost, and Dark types
Solm is known for Fire and Ground types.
Lythos is known for Dragon and Psychic (plus most of the legendaries live in Lythos) types.
Diamant: Aegislash, Gallade, Samurott , Sirfetch'd, Gyrados, and Milotic
Diamant doesn’t use Fire types. It is related to his accident with fire magic. His team mostly features blade wielders, except for Gyrados and Milotic. He actually just ended up with them because he enjoys fishing. Magikarp was the first pokemon he ever fished and so he caught it. Honedge and Oshawott were both gifts and his Ralts found him while he was fishing.
Both Milotic and Gyrados are viewed as yet another reason he is a great Prince (and as a strike against Alcryst). He was able to successful raise both Feebas and Magikarp and his Gyrados in particular is well mannered and generally good natured (off the battle field).
Alear: starts with Jirachi and as he travels he gets: Eevee, Smoliv, Riolu, female Snorunt, and Phanpy.
At the start of the game he starts with only his Jirachi. He doesn’t remember how he got it, but Jirachi stays with him and has been his partner for a long time. He finds Eevee in Lythos, Smoliv in Firene, Riolu in Brodia, female Snorunt in Elusia (will become a froslass) and Phanpy in Solm.
Alcryst: Dartrix, Feebas, Kirlia, Doublade, Lucario, befriends a Mightyena,
Feebas was a gift from Diamant, but Alcryst is having issues getting Feebas to become a Milotic. Diamant was trying to help his brother but Alcryst views it as his failure and Feebas is struggling with disappointing Alcryst. Once Alcryst gets A rank with Alear, Diamant, Lapis and Citrinne Feebas will evolve. Doublade and Dartrix were both gifts as well and Kirlia and Lucario found him.
Mightyena is the ‘wolf’ that Alcryst befriends with Alear.
(Bonus but incomplete team:
Bunet has both a lickatung and a lickilicky and yes the three of them just go around licking things)

WGAT FAN EMBLEMS DO YOU HAVE. ARE THEY MAIN VERSE OR XENOLOGUE
I HAVE A LIST. I explained in the other ask i answered uhhh just now (link here) these are technically xenologue by virtue of being AU. Veyle-Alear roleswap that I have insane thoughts about thank you Salem. Once again Berkut & Rinea are the most well baked from a gameplay standpoint but I have other ones....
Quick n dirty AU rundown: Veyle-Alear roleswap! Alear is with Sombron and an alternate set of Four Hounds (Lapis, Kagetsu, Pandreo, Zephia. Salem's blorbos), and Veyle was taken in by Lumera. I also took the liberty of making the younger royals the plot important ones.... teehee
My fan emblems trend antagonist and/or possessed for thematic reasons and because it's fun. HOWEVER I excluded most main antags from the pool because I don't think Emblem Medeus would be very interesting from a character standpoint.
I actually made a list!! So I'd have one from every game (this was also brainstormed with Salem lol). I don't have full knowledge of every FE ever and a lot of FEs I am significantly less insane about than The Usual Suspects (Binding Blade, Awakening, now Engage), so you do notice a lot of bias in what has the most detail, lmao.
Anyway. You get the list.
Archanea: Maria. (100% inspired by fell Maria in heroes, lol. LISTEN IT'D BE SO THEMATIC FOR VEYLE THO. Little girl who just wants her big siblings back. Maria would be Veyle's Marth - her first Emblem, and the one closest to her. I still gotta play the Archanea games but... the potential.)
Valentia: Berkut & Rinea (Firene Emblem. Elaborated on in the other post!!)
Jugdral (Fe4): I am not wise enough just yet.... probably Julius.
Jugdral (Fe5): I don't know <3 Ishtar? Reinhardt? Mareeta? I like the thought of Mareeta from what I know abt her actually.
Elibe (Fe6): IDUNN MY GIRL IDUNN. (She'd be Lumera's Emblem as Sigurd equivalent. Sleeping dragon guided by Sleeping Dragon... I love Idunn... I have Thoughts about her.... okay....)
Elibe (Fe7): Ninian (She's Elusia's Emblem!! I have thoughts about her & Hortensia...)
Magvel: Lyon (this was the one and only pick, really.)
Tellius (Fe9): Black Knight (Salem's suggestion, but it works! God I need to beat Radiant Dawn...)
Tellius (Fe10): My initial suggestion was Pelleas but Sothe is also tempting (god I need to beat Radiant Dawn.... 2!!!)
Ylisse: GRIMA. WHO ELSE. (i'd put him down where Corrin is, as the second Solm emblem. Haha Grima you got trapped in a desert temple again.) (Either that or I swap him with Lucina for funny points)
Fates: Takumi (conquest flavored! he is not doing too hot! He's Brodia's Emblem same reason as Berkut: it would remind him of Nohr and he hates being here. Has a soft spot for Alcryst, though. OF COURSE I gave him to Alcryst.)
Fodlan: Shez. For the funnies. (shez's super form is obviously the engaged look. I'd make them Solm's primary Emblem, because I feel like they and Fogado would be friends. But then Shez goes Revenge Mode and Fogado is like. dude. chill. you're scaring the hoes.)
And that's my full list!! The only ones who have gameplay ideas attached to them so far are Berkut & Rinea, Idunn, Takumi, and Shez, for a perfect gender ratio as I've non-biney'd Shez. Because of course I have.

Something about MC's "I can't do this without you!" at the Emblems is really funny. Big waifufag energy.
Again, another point where I wish the Emblems were original characters. You could actually do something interesting with Alear having some kinda mildly codependent relationship with the Emblems in spite of them not being truly alive if they weren't cool iconic FE characters that need to be objectively good and admirable at all times.
Heck, you could address the unsettling idea of the Emblems not being truly alive in the first place! They identify themselves as Emblem Name, which means even they see themselves as a derivative. Are they trapped in a hell of undeath, watching everyone around them age and die? Do they still feel the human need for interaction? They get used as weapons against their consent-- isn't that an awful existence? Why would they want to become an Emblem in the first place? They're like the cookies from Black Mirror...nightmarish.
Interesting characterization glimmer from Alcryst. His boss convo with his dad has him saying that he wants to be the one to kill dad in order to spare Diamant having to do it. Damn, son
The sad piano music on the retreat chapter is nice.
I don't get why localization did that with the shitenno names...they're supposed to be colors. Mauvier and Griss are recognizably colors, but the girls are weird. Zephia = Sepia, Marni = Maroon (or maybe Marron, the French version).
Fogado feels like the character the fandom wanted Claude to be lmao

Starting to suffer on supports. As of chapter 15, MC doesn't have one B support. They took away support-building on the enemy phase and two-space supporting, which makes it a massive pain in the ass to get support points. I've been doing arena and cafe after every battle, too! Squeezing as many support points as possible outta this, but it still ain't much
Reclassing ends up being kind of an odd beast thanks to how Emblem-dependant it is. Losing your initial batch of Emblems takes away your ability to spread weapon proficiencies around, which hobbles your ability to reclass for several chapters. Compounding that, it's a good while before you can buy Second Seals, and money is very tight. If you have a unit who starts off in a class not suited to their growths (Jean, Clanne) they're kinda just fucked. What's the point of designing a system with so much flexibility only to take away your ability to use it for most of the game? I would have preferred the system be more stripped-down and actually usable.
Goddamn, do I feel the money crunch. Buying gifts? In THIS economy?

So I was really on the fence about Fire Emblem: Engage, but then thought hey, I’ve played six other FE games and enjoyed them all, odds are good I’d enjoy another. This was the CORRECT CHOICE.
Gameplay was great. I spent several days just messing around in regular skirmishes, got carried away, then ended up overlevelled for the main story maps. Story was by turns ridiculously cheesy, predictable, and then punching me square in the heart. Characters are a bunch of fun anime blorbos. Sommie now leads an army of about fifty stray cats and dogs, RIP to anyone with allergies who hopes for an audience with the Divine Dragon.
No, I don’t mind that there’s less deep worldbuilding and grey morality compared to Three Houses, because sometimes I just want to enjoy a colourful fairytale where Good curbstomps Evil and then everyone lives happily ever after. Y’know, to balance out the cynical capitalist hellscape that is real actual life.
Spoilers abound under the cut, also tl;dr, apparently I have a lot to say about this game.
I chose male Alear, because his design bothers me less than the female one (she looks simultaneously more childlike and more sexualised, which uh, is not my cup of tea). He ended up reminding me a lot of Corrin in some ways - sweet and kind, a bit naive, amnesiac getting gaslighted due to past childhood trauma and having a giant evil dragon god as a father, y’know, little things like that.
Honestly, the Chapter 11 battle was less painful than watching his give them back please give them back routine over the Emblem Rings. Honey, they’re the villains, they’re not gonna do that just because you keep asking. But he got it together as the game progressed, and I was incredibly relieved when he said no to being blackmailed over the Queen of Solm’s life. And then we got his double death, which was silly on the part of the writers, but did showcase him being brave and sweet, AND THEN CHAPTER 24. His voice actor did a great job there. My heart was in pieces when he started chanting ‘defect, defect’, like no excuse me you are actually perfect. Even your hairstyle, which we now know is actually plot relevant and not just an Interesting Choice on the designer’s part. And even if you can’t turn into a proper dragon (though it would have been fun if he did that in the early chapters, wouldn’t it? All his allies expect a shining white Lumera clone, and what they get is either a mini Sombron or some type of messed up hybrid, and Alear himself doesn’t know why either. There’s a dramatic start to an AU fic).
I didn’t care about the Emblems, they were just a game mechanic that gave me flashy magical girl transformations, and even the ones I recognised like Corrin and Byleth didn’t stir anything (I actually prefer male Corrin and female Byleth). But I understood why Alear in particular cared about them, at least. The Four Hounds...well, I liked their theme tune, and I’m sure some people are delighted with Griss, that wacky little masochist. They certainly had admirable escape skills, the number of different times they turned up for battle. Or maybe nobody ever explained the concept of taking prisoners to Alear.
Loved Alfred, loved Ivy and both her weirdo retainers. The weapon triangle meant nothing by the end of the game, I could charge Alear or Kagetsu towards a pack of blue enemies or Alfred towards greens, and it didn’t matter because they’d just dodge and laugh. Flower crown boy got the pact ring, because I heard what happens to him otherwise and that is Not Allowed. They’re so sweet and stupid together.
I bought the DLC after completing the main story, because I wanted more maps to play, and then eventually the Xenologue. Congratulations Nintendo, you have wheedled another chunk of money from me and it was well spent.

thinking about how Hortensia and Ivy being half-sisters means it could be possible to do an age swap without doing a role swap, so Ivy is still daughter of the queen (and crown princess) and Hortensia is still the daughter of one of Hyacinth’s mistresses
the queen being extra pissed at all the mistresses cause all their kids are older than Ivy, possibly worried about them inheriting the throne despite her daughter still being crown princess, so she’s extra vicious to all them
the process of Hortensia’s mom getting the queen to like her taking a lot longer than in canon, and maybe that bond only gets solidified when there is a word-of-mouth-type agreement made that in the event of something tragic to Hyacinth before Ivy is of age, Hortensia will only act as her regent
Hortensia’s mother dying when she was ten so that way she’s still twice the age she was when she died, plus that would put Ivy at four at the time which I think gives ample time for all that queen-mistresses drama
Hortensia is still her genius self and skipped a bunch of grades at the academy and graduated from there very early, so since then she’s been engaging in Elusian politics
speaking of the academy, this may need to be a retainer swap too, because I for the life of me CANNOT see Zelkov or Kagetsu attending there; I don’t know why, it’s not like we know much about the academy to begin with
Ivy choosing to worship the Divine Dragon to be rebellious in canon would be ripe with PEAK teenager energy here; and because she is now a teenager, she is also way more cringe about it
Hortensia still being the one to attack at the Brodian border with Lucina, and Ivy still being the one to attack the castle with Leif. maybe some extra shock from Alear & co. at seeing that Hyacinth basically left his fourteen-year-old daughter to die
Hortensia being extra pissed at Alear when she thinks they killed Ivy cause that’s her little sister, she was supposed to protect her and also how DARE you
would it be too far of me to say we get the scene I thought we were gonna get at Destinea Cathedral, when Hortensia walked up to Veyle and flipped her hood off her head, where instead of that, she just slaps/punches her in the face and she hits her so hard that her hood also flies off?
the added utter relief that Hortensia feels in Solm Palace upon learning that Ivy is alive. not sure on how else that scene would go, like what else would change
just realized that a retainer swap would mean that it would be Kagetsu and Zelkov who steal Eirika from the boat, and they don’t have a wyvern, so what are the logistics of their escape? do they just swim to shore?
the two of them only referring to themselves as ‘princess of Elusia’ - cause Hortensia calling herself ‘first princess’ would probably make everyone assume that there’s a crown prince, and Ivy doesn’t wanna call herself ‘crown princess’ cause she doesn’t think she should be just because she’s “legitimate” (or something) - to the point that everyone in the army not from Elusia assumes that Hortensia is the crown princess
and if everyone is assuming that Hortensia is crown princess, then Hortensia would probably have supports with the other older royals and Ivy with the other younger royals. I wanna see Diamant and Hortensia interact SOOO bad (I should make a separate post of my thoughts on that, separate from this lil au). and since Ivy and Alcryst have supports in canon, would Ivy still have supports with Diamant here or would Hortensia still have supports with Alcryst?
after the war, the whole word-of-mouth agreement their mothers made goes into effect: Ivy is crowned queen with Hortensia as her regent. Ivy is all like “alright, first order of business is making it so that worship of the Divine Dragon is allowed here...” (I don’t know it that’s banned in canon so just roll with it) “...and second order of business is abdicating to you, and I’m gonna get the Divine One to sign off on that so everyone just has to accept it”
Hortensia: I’m not sure that’s how these things work. aren’t these the kinds of things you have to wait to do until you no longer have a regent?
Ivy: don’t care, I’m not waiting that long

rambling about the fell xenologue royals bc i can ↓ spoilers for the entire dlc
okay first off im gonna say its a missed opportunity to not give them alternative designs bc then even if someone didnt like the story they could be like well at least i got to see goth alfred or something. im not a character designer nor am i good at fashion but id say firene have a more muted colour pallette, with like navy blues and grey rather than the bright blue of their coat of arms. brodia less flashy. i love the armour of brodia its very cool but doesnt super suit their ideals in this au. ivy in purple and golds contrasted to hortensia in just like. white idk. make her look like a commoner. and solm also less flashy. maybe like mustard yellow colours. idfk. someone can probably do this better than me.
anyway i am firene biased but i really liked the idea of alfred being more of a figurehead whilst céline is actually the one in control. yes this isnt outright said but i think its kinda implied from how alfred seems kinda nervous and depressed and is like "i have no idea how to be a king" whilst céline is like "alfred if you dont approve this invasion im just going to do it myself". even at the end where theyre "redeemed" céline says "i am here to support you, alfred. lets head back so you can rest, hm?" which just seems like our céline right? when alfred was dying she studied and prepared herself to be the new heir in case he passed away and she had to inherit the throne, but after his recovery she instead dedicated herself to supporting him the best she can, as well as focusing herself on taking care of the more unsavoury parts of ruling. but i think from everything we've seen about céline in this world, she's still just taking charge. céline is proud and angry, alfred is unconfident and depressed. and céline loves alfred so much that she's basically controlling him. she's not the opposite of our céline, she's just gone to the extreme.
contrasting this with the relationship of alcryst and diamant. like Alfred and céline, diamant is not confident and alcryst is proud and thinks himself more suited to leading. i dont think its ever said why their personalities are like this (other than rafal like controlling them and stuff) but its my headcanon ever since the trailer came out that perhaps morion died much earlier in this universe, where alcryst was too young to remember. so diamant grew up with one of his biggest fears being true, and i dont imagine bereavement counselling would be too realised in fire emblem universe, so it kinda manifested into extreme anxiety maybe causing the people around him to give up on him becoming a strong king, instead resorting to grooming alcryst to be the way he is. and alcryst seems to be planning to kill diamant and take the throne himself (i think diamant even has fears about this if u fight him with alcryst). alcryst instead of having a inferiority complex has a superiority complex bc everyone in this universe is like "diamant is so useless as a king, you 'd be much more suited alcryst" really showing how your environment can shape you.
for ivy first off i have to say, her and zelkov being besties in the alternate universe is literally so fucking funny. more importantly i've seen some people saying "oh she's like how we all thought she'd be before the game came out!" which i dont really agree with? bc everyone thought she'd a camilla clone right? but i'd argue the most important part of camilla's character is that she loves her siblings and will protect them no matter what which alt ivy is Definitely not doing. this ivy also hates poor people and values her devotion to the fell dragon above all else. like ofc a big part of our ivy is her devotion to the divine dragon, but it's also very important to her character that she prioritises her subjects above all else (i think the givre port chapter highlights this, wanting to hurry to help people who are alive rather than clear the port of the corrupted), but alt ivy is too busy trying to revive sombron and slaughtering the solm army to care about who dies. and hortensia. oh my dear sweet baby girl i fucking CRIED at alt hortensia vs ivy oh my godddddddddssdd. it seems ivy inherited at lot of her mother's beliefs in this universe and hates hortensia and has also killed all of her other half siblings hahaha :'). anyway hortensias abuse from her sister seems to have really impacted her self worth. and i think "parents died much earlier" should also be taken for the elusians as well bc hortensia got a lot of her confidence learning from her mother right? one thing that sorta sucks is hortensia vs. goldmary being like "the three of us wanted to stand out" whilst shes standing there in her fucking silly little clown outfit and decked out pegasus, so once again, alt designs would have really elevated the dlc imo. anyway alt hortensia i am giving u a big hug my baby i love you🫂
and onto solm. okay im sorry but timerra was so lame. they could have really done something cool with her being serious, stoic, and essentially robotic in her rule but its literally just "merrin what are you talking about you hate animals! and im a vegetarian and i hate singing! and panette you hate ghosts!" and like that is the extent of it. they didnt even bother to explain what solm was like in this universe and feels like they just added her into the elusia chapter to be like "look three way battle! just like three houses!!! you guys loved three houses right???" im sorry timerra they did u so dirty :/. fogado on the other hand. ough its so good. so fogado is dead (theyre all dead technically but fogado is dead dead and aware it) and instead of travelling the country to aid timerra he's instead working directly for rafal as assassin, and is implied to hate timerra (he says something like "i always wished i would be the one to kill my sister but i guess i'll to settle for killing her lookalike" in his vs. timerra dialogue). and i dont this this dislike is mutual (alt timerra says she wants to hug fogado in her vs. him dialogue iirc). this fogado seems to be more... bloodthirsty ig and less into the like. sneaky fighting he does in our universe. he mentions in his conversation with bunet that bunet is a brute on the battlefield (alt!bunet neurotypical confirmation where?) and fogado seems really fixated on how bunet looked covered in his own blood. we know that our fogado is actually very scared about the war underneath his friendly persona from his supports with pandreo, but alt fogado seems much more emotionless about it. in fact this might tie into solm in this universe thinking about it, instead of being free they all repress their emotions or something, bc even though alt fogado still talks in a sorta lighthearted candace, if a little more intense sounding and sounds Especially off whilst reminiscing on bunet and pandreo's deaths. his final death quote being "im not scares. ive died twice now... whats one more time?" sure okay buddy i believe you.
thats about it for my thoughts. tbh i wish we got more screentime with these guys. nel and rafal and the winds are great dont get me wrong but i wish they had focused a bit more on the royals and how they are different to how they are in our universe (even tho there are a lot of unique boss convos with them most of the ones I've seen were not super interesting or insightful :/and you definitely cant get all of them in a single playthrough im pretty sure). sorry for the long post ty if u read this far🫶
