LONGBOARD NIGHTS PT.2 [JANUARY]

"A self-doubting Husk hunter has to face their trauma when the partner they rely on is injured during an infected house breaching"

(original logline that has now change a lil)

I have been working on the script for Longboard Nights for around a month now, maybe a little more. It has definitely been more of a challenge that I'd thought it would be, considering I had already written a 10 page screenplay on LN (Longboard Nights) in Film Production Management a while back, though the ideas are more developed and different now.

I firstly want to mention, before I get into the nitty gritty of writing, that Ben McMorran is a pleasure to work with, I haven't felt such positivity from a director ever! I have never been called King so many times, I love it. He really has a vision for this project, I actually call it his baby sometimes, he nurtures it like a real human baby that needs like food and water and burping (this makes no sense but needed a strong simile to really get the idea across). In addition to Mr Mcmorran, Jack and Beth are producing LN, I have complete faith putting this tough challenge in their hands. Alex is cinematographer and I've already head some of the plans for the visual style of the film, which all sound so experimental and prettttyyyyyy!

Anyways, writing has been a journey. I definitely should have started writing long before I did, I think Ben hinted at starting before Christmas but silly ole me wanted to completely forget about uni until term started again. But got my finger out eventually.

I started with some meetings with Ben about world-building, because I was finding myself lost when trying to begin writing, I didn't have a full understanding of the world. He eventually put together a book on The World of Longboard Nights, so helpful! I have usually had this open whilst writing. Ben also put together things I could watch and read for inspirations, like Arcane and the 4-6 minute shorts the same creators make, which were great because they dealt with character arcs well in such short time, without any story feeling too rushed or sparse. I eventually got Draft 1 finished.

I also sent Draft 1 to Kate to get feedback in writing class, which I've really been enjoying. Kate proposed the, at first, horrific idea to completely change the dynamics of the characters, this meant changing a lot of dialogue and general action in the script. We talked it through and she was definitely right with the idea. To break it down a little... Alex (she/her, protagonist) is an unconfident character, who thinks she needs to fight a Husk to overcome her trauma. Casca (they/them) is a confident and skilled Husk Hunter, who finally brings Alex along on a job after her asking for so long. So, what Kate proposed was switching the character traits, and having Alex more confident and a regular Husk Hunter, and Casca is less into the job and more shy. This means when we have Alex's arc after she freezes up and fails to fight the Husk, resulting in Casca getting injured, it's more surprising and a stronger moment, as we didn't expect her to freeze and she is so confident and trained in combat. Ben was also happy with this change.

Anyways I am a few drafts down now, and will have the final draft completed by Saturday 11th (Bob Marleys birthday). I will do a separate post and more in-depth post about the writing process in terms of story and characters, this is just a vague update :)

I am also doing production design for this project, which I am SO EXCITED to begin planning, I have so many ideas!!!!

It was a chilly September morning when Jango dropped Cody off for his first day of Sophomore year. It was strange to think that a whole year had passed since he first stepped foot here.

His younger brothers Fives and Echo were joining them at high school this year. Jango dumped them by the school gates, his foot not even leaving the peddle before he sped off to drop the rest of the Fetts off at the nearby middle school. Cody hurried to catch up with the younger set of twins as they raced up the school steps. They were far to energetic for a Monday morning, still under the illusion that high school was this magical place where everyone burst into song or were secretly wizards. Cody would almost pity them if they hadn't woken him up an hour early. Further up the stairway, Cody could see people crowding as a couple walked through the entrance hand in hand. He supposed that was one thing all those movies and TV shows did get right about high school. The never ending nosiness of relationship drama. Through the throng of students, Cody made out that one of the hands belonged to Satine Kryze; straight A student, captain of debate team and heir to the Kryze Industries Fortune. She could have been the most popular girl in school if such a trivial thing as popularity had been deemed worthy of her interest. And at her side was- "Hey isn't that Obi-Wan?" Fives piped up. 

Sure enough, the young gentleman currently holding the door open, was indeed Obi-Wan.

"Did you know about this?" Rex asked him. Cody nodded because of course Obi-Wan had told him about the amazingly perfect girl he'd met at summer school. He was his best friend after all. Well after Rex. But Rex is his twin, he has to be his best friend. Like how since Obi-Wan and Quinlan grew up together, they were going to be best friends whether they liked it or not. Obi-Wan is Cody's best friend out of choice and vice versa which Cody felt was the highest honour. "And you're okay with it?" Rex pressed. "Why wouldn't I be?" Cody replied, confused by the odd tone of his brother's voice. Rex just stared at him for a long moment, before shaking his head in silence.  "She's prettttyyyyyy!" Fives teased because he is a little shit and Cody yanks the hook of his backpack like a mother would to her kittens to stop him from running off to purposefully annoy the couple. He reluctantly let go as the school bell rung, grateful at least that Obi-Wan and Satine were out of sight now. Still, something about Five's words got stuck in Cody's head. Because sure he objectively knew that Satine was pretty in a western standards of beauty kind of way with her naturally golden locks, sapphire eyes and rose lips. But he didn't understand why that was enough for someone like Obi-Wan to fall for her. Why any guy would fall for a girl like her. Cody spent homeroom stewing in silence, ignoring Rex's pointed looks. The rest of his morning didn't improve much. He snapped at Quinlan's usual teasing. Got fouled twice in gym. And vented so much at the back of History that even Ventress was giving him concerned looks. By the time fourth period rolled around, he was exhausted both mentally and physically.  The worst part was that he didn't even understand why. Which only made him angrier. Cody was so lost in his own turmoil that he was surprised when Obi-Wan slid into the seat next to him. "Aren't you going to sit with your new girlfriend." Cody gestured to where Satine was chatting to Padme a few desks in front of them. "We're dating Cody, not surgically joined at the hip." Obi-Wan said with that quirk of the corner of his lip. Something about that now familiar sight calmed the unsettled feelings Cody had inside. "Do you not like her?" Obi-Wan asked suddenly, because Obi-Wan was perceptive bastard and it wasn't hard to pick up on Cody's frustration. Cody resisted the urge to sigh. He wanted to admit to Obi-Wan the truth. That there was some part of him deep inside of him that hated her but that would be impossible to tell his best friend because the last thing he ever wanted to do was hurt Obi-Wan’s feelings, especially when he had no rational explanation as to why. "No. I do like her. I think she's beautiful and smart and brilliant. That you'll be brilliant together. I'm happy for you." He told him, because he was. He was happy if Obi-Wan was happy. And that was all that mattered. "I'm just having the first day back from hell." Thankfully, Obi-Wan accepted his answer settling into his seat with a warm smile on his face. "I'd hate to make your day even worse, but you should probably be made aware that Anakin and Fives have over half their classes together." Cody groaned as he banged his head on the table.

#7 Rocketman (2019)

It’s only fitting that a biopic about Elton John is a sequin covered fever dream that is full of melodrama and bangers.

Honestly, I should have written about this after I watched Tommy, but here we are.  It was a completely different viewing experience however, because my note taking died halfway through this film while I just sat and watched.  The plot was kind of squishy and malleable and transitions between fantasy and reality, and it was a journey I wanted to experience unencumbered.

This musical is loosely based on Elton John’s life pre-rehab, and it really dials up every single emotional beat to 11.  The first scene of the movie is Elton, played by Taron Egerton, full costume, crashing an AA meeting.  The leader of the group asks him what he was like as a child, which feels like something a therapist would ask you, not a AA counselor, who, presumably, is trying to guide discussions that involve the entire room?  But it gives the film the excuse to flashback to grade school Elton, dancing around with all of his neighbors in a cul-de-sac.

It was clear from the opening scenes that this movie was made by a crew who put a ton of love into this project.  The colors in the flashbacks are tinged like a colorized black-and-white photo, while adult and child Reggie/Elton are in full-blown technicolor.  The choreography is interesting, and isn’t shot in a way where you can’t see what is going on... I was sold.

We are introduced to his parents, who are both emotionally absent and don’t seem to like each other or their son.  Reggie cultivates his musical talents with encouragement from his grandmother, as they discovered when he was very young he had an extraordinary talent, and the ability to mimic what he hears exactly on the piano.

Sidenote: Someone do a “I Want Love” and “My Immortal” mashup, cause they’re the same song to me.

His parents ultimately divorce after his father discovers his mother is having an affair, and his new stepdad introduces him to rock music.  Reggie starts touring in a backup band to pay the bills and his bandmates encourage him to reinvent himself in order to stand out from the crowd.

The musical numbers in Rocketman are just so flipping cool.  They’re pure fantasy - colorful and over-the-top representations of Elton’s emotional state.

Taking their advice, Reggie decides to change his name to Elton when he pursues a solo record deal.  The label connects him with his lifetime lyricist Bernie Taupin, played by Jamie Bell.

I love Jamie Bell so much.  I fell in love with him as a kid watching Billy Elliot and every time I see him in a movie I get so excited.  I spend the beginning of Snowpiercer screaming for Chris Evans to protect him at all costs.  I was so happy to see Elton and Bernie’s bromance featured so prominently in this film, because I found their working relationship to be the most intriguing part of Elton’s story.  Bernie legitimately writes the lyrics and then Elton just hears the song in his fucking head like he’s a (pinball) wizard or something.  I always get teared up when I hear “Your Song” (probably Moulin Rouge residuals, honestly), but the scene where Elton composes the song is so simple and sweet, just like the sentiment of the song.

After writing a few promising songs, the record company sends Elton and Bernie to America to drum up some interest by playing a few live shows. Elton introduces his new, flashy look, and although he was nervous as fuck, puts on a performance that has the entire crowd off their feet.

I sound like a broken record, but the musical numbers are sooooo prettttyyyyyy please watch them, they are the best ever and worth the price of admission.  My mother was in college when “Crocodile Rock” was released (her name is Suzie), and when she played the song when I was a kid she would tell me stories about how her and her roommate danced to it while laying on their backs and flailing their arms and legs in the air.  That memory has stuck with me and it always brings a smile to my face.

After the show, Elton meets John Reid, a man who he would start a personal and professional relationship with.  He assists with Elton’s glowup and rides his road to stardom before encouraging Elton to sever his ties with his record company so John can act as his manager.  Now achieving an extreme amount of success, Elton searches for acceptance from both of his parents, but fails to receive the emotional validation he needs to move on from the pain of his childhood.  He then realizes that John, of course, is using him for money and breaks Elton’s heart, and instead of firing John and taking back control of his life, Elton attempts suicide in front of a backyard full of people. 

The climax of the movie is the “Rocketman” scene, and hoo boy, it is extraordinary.  It’s the juxtaposition between the lowest moment of his life, and the highest moment of his career set to song.  How they pit-crew style puffed him up and shuffled him on stage beautifully illustrated the machinery-like aspect of the industry.

Bernie tries to convince Elton to take a break and get his head right, but his concerns about Elton’s mental health are consistently dismissed.  It’s only after diving further into his unhealthy coping mechanisms, a failed marriage, Bernie severing ties with him, and a heart attack that Elton struts into AA asking for help.  There’s some really heavy-handed mental reconciliation with the people who have hurt him in his past before Elton checks into rehab and repairs his relationship with Bernie.  The rest of Elton’s impressive career is a footnote to this story.

My only gripe with this movie is the plot is cliché as fuck.  Elton is established as an unreliable narrator almost immediately, so it’s not like we’re meant to believe this is necessarily the full truth, but it does follow the touchstones of every VH1 Behind the Music.  Broken family, rise to fame, falling in love with their manager, being exploited, turning to addiction and spiraling to rock bottom, rehab, and redemption.  I found it curious that his trip to rehab was when the story stopped, until I started watching the press interviews Elton John did for this movie.  He’s been sober for something like 30 years now, and he stressed that the hardest thing he ever did was ask for help.  I feel like, to him, this movie’s purpose is to show that no matter how bad things can get, asking for help can lead to peace, closure, and success, and that’s extremely admirable.  With that knowledge, it’s easy for me to handwave away my annoyance and enjoy the ride.

Elton specifically requested Taron Egerton to be cast after he worked with him on The Kingsman sequel, and asked they record all the songs with Taron singing because he didn’t want the movie to be lip-synced to his voice.  I thought this was a very smart move, and Taron does have the singing chops.  He sounded like Elton without doing an Elton cosplay.  For better or worse, some of the vocals were recorded live because of Taron’s insistence, which he justifies, “I think it’s dangerous in a musical if you start thinking of singing as being something intrinsically different to speech, you’ve got to approach it in the same way.  So you don’t want to film this film that’s filled with dubbed dialogue because it feels disembodied, and it feels disconnected.  It’s the same in a musical.  Characters don’t just sing for the sake of singing in a musical, they sing, because all of a sudden, speech has become insufficient, it no longer does the job required.  It’s a level up in terms of expression.”

We’ve all heard the adage about how musicals work, that characters speak until they have too many emotions they have to sing, and then when that’s too much, they dance - it’s Baby’s First Musical Theory.  But mannnnn, why is it so hard to believe that making your actors sing live over and over and over and over again is sacrificing quality for realism?  Honestly, it’s not adding emotion, because that’s what the music is forrrrrrr god fucking damn ittttttt.  If you get emotional hearing songs on the radio, or watching a music video, I promise, I fucking promise, it’s OK to have your actors prerecord the vocals.

Saying that... I only have one foot on my Sideways soapbox.  Taron isn’t singing opera, he’s singing pop music, so it’s not like there was an unneeded risk to his vocal chords.  Watching these interviews, it is also clear that Dexter Fletcher and Taron Egerton love musicals.  Taron did his research - He references All That Jazz in his interviews as inspiration, and I stan a man who takes his job seriously.  But please, please, pleaseeee stop going to the Tom Hooper School of Realistic Movie Musicals.  Musicals require an inherent suspension of reality, which Rocketman handles beautifully in how it is filmed.  The minute realism is ham-fistedly inserted into a musical, it makes things awkward as fuck.
