zb1 as boyfriends!!

word count: 2.8k (only ca 350 for each) a/n: requested!! I wrote them in bulletpoint form in an attempt to keep a structure, but I do apologize if it's in-cohesive because my brain is still in finals mode (cries). You guys. Jiwoong is THE boyfriend. He knows all the in's and out's of boyfriending™ at this point. Will not disappoint.

He might fall in love a liiittle before you, but honestly it would be pretty mutual from the beginning. I think he would have to meet someone with the mindset that it would lead to a relationship (probably doesn't go from being friends to dating) so if he meets you and likes you he would make it known :)

Pretends to like dates in the beginning; going out to have nice dinners, going on late night walks in the city, visiting animal cafés, anything that gives you a chance to talk a lot and really get to know each other.

When he knows he's got you he will prefer at-home dates though because going out is a little too much effort and he'd rather just chill on his couch <333 If you still want to go out for dates though he would of course compromise!!!

Speaking of which- he's so good at communicating and making sure you're both happy, in the relationship and otherwise. Kind of loves when you come to him for advice or admit when you're struggling with something because he sees that as a big sign of trust.

"hey I bet you can't get me a bag of chips from the convenience store in 15 minutes" and you speed to the convenience store because you're a fool in love <3

I don't think he is super lovey dovey- he's more about the casual displays of affection. A "hey, you look really nice today" when he can tell you made an extra effort. A packed lunch waiting for you in the fridge when he knows you're going to have a busy day. Of course he lets you know he loves you, just not every second of every day.

In general he is a very chill, low maintenance boyfriend who is secure in your relationship. Is mature enough to communicate and compromise with you whenever you disagree on something (which is very sexy of him 🤌 we love).

Oh you're totally the one who falls in love first. He has insane rizz- like you're going to be crushing on him for a good few months before he develops feelings back.

Once he does though he's allllll yours. Looks at you with full on heart eyes and giggles at everything you say but is cool about it if that makes sense?? Like he acts unaffected and tries to be the cool and sophisticated boyfriend but it's painfully obvious he's totally head-over-heels in love.

He is 1. a busy man, and 2. an introvert, so his favourite type of dates are in calm and not-so busy places where you can just wind down and spend time together, like small cafés or going for long strolls in nature and just talking. He would also love to just stay at home as you both do your own things, just vibing in peace and being productive.

Will nag at you for every little thing but it's out of love. It's always "babe a granola bar isn't a meal 😒" and "I can't believe you never remember to apply sunscreen!!" but it's not to be annoying he just cares about you (and most of the time he's right).

Brings you cut fruits to snack on when you're busy doing something <3

One thing about Zhang Hao is that he IS a great boyfriend, but he will remind you himself through small comments. "Am I not the best boyfriend... Where else could you find a boyfriend like me... You're so lucky to have the handsomest boyfriend...." He loves you so much and he doesn't want you to find another boyfriend so he is pitching himself so you don't go away <3

The most caring boyfriend who will look after you and make you feel so so loved. Life is exhausting sometimes but this relationship is the perfect safe space for the both of you to relax and be unapologetically yourselves.

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion but I think he would fall in love first!! He's a soft boi at heart, when he meets someone he likes he falls hard and FAST. Luckily for him you fall back though because duh he's Sung Hanbin.

COOKING AND BAKING DATES OF COURSE!!!!!! He will seduce you by cooking your favourite homemade dishes and making you the best cup of coffee you've ever had. Also learns how to make bread so he can lure you into being his partner forever and ever 😈

If you were up for it, I think he would love to take you out dancing. He will teach you if you want and are worried about embarrassing yourself, he just wants you to go out and have fun together!! Probably knows all the good spots and will take you out on the occasional Friday night 🕺🕺

We know this man stays busy, so he might not have that much free time to spend with you... That being said you have his undivided attention whenever he does see you. You have something to say?? All other conversations are unimportant. You're going into another room?? He won't follow you around but he IS counting the seconds until you come back.

If you compliment him on pretty much anything he is an emotional wreck the rest of the day. Wuws his praise, especially from you <3333

Kind of his favourite thing to do is to sit down with you after a long week, have some snacks and some nice drinks ready, and you just rant to each other about work/school/people or whatever. Sometimes you just need to complain to someone you confide in, ya know?? And he needs to know who your enemies are because they are his enemies too.

He just likes you a LOT and wants to involve you in all his favourite things. Hanbin loves life and having fun- and he wants you to have fun too!! You are his most beloved person ever and he shows that by making you a part of his life in all the ways he can.

There's not a single alternate universe where a relationship with Matthew wouldn't start as friends to lovers. I'm sorry it just works too well with him. You start falling for each other at around the same time, but he's probably the first one to confess. You're both just two fools extremely in love <3

Absolute date master but it's completely unintentional?? Idk, I think he would plan really cute date like picnics in the park or at-home movie nights with dinner. He just has a knack for dates that make you feel like the main character in a movie.

He has one (1) mission and it is to devastate you all the time. Prepare to receive cute texts for no reason, matching jewellery, and for him to ask to take couple pics that he can use as his phone background 🥲

Will teach you his choreographies. Even if it's only two easy steps. Doesn't matter if you are a dancer or not. His baby will be able to dance to his songs!!!

You know how he wants to be the hot Canadian oppa or whatever? Your partner privilege is that you're the only one allowed to tell him he's cute. Like he loves when you giggle and ruffle his hair and kiss his cheeks but that's only because he loves you. If Gyubin tried that shit on Matthew he would be on the floor in a chokehold. Use this privilege wisely.

When it's just the two of you he literally can't keep his hands off of you. Wraps his arms around you so you have no choice but to lie down on the couch and let him hold you and press kisses all over your face. He just likes his cuddles.

Overall a very loving boyfriend who lives to let you know how special you are. You deserve to be treated like a k-drama main character- so he ends up doing all the cliché, cute and romantic things for you that he never imagined himself enjoying before- but now has a special person to do them with <3

You both start liking each other around the same time. He's a pretty social guy and just very easy to like, so I feel like you would become close pretty fast, and he would confess that he likes you pretty quickly too.

As great as he is to spend time with and talk to- he sucks at the whole dating thing. He does really like you and wants to spend time with you almost always, he just doesn't like the logistics of arranging a date. What do you mean they don't show that movie next Friday?? What do you mean we have to decide where to have dinner?? Please just tell him where you want to go and he will happily go there with you. He just doesn't want to do the whole planning bit.

Sitting together in his bedroom as he strums on his guitar and you do something else.

Very cheesy boyfriend but it's so cute <3 Tooth-rottingly sweet texts and compliments for absolutely no reason, thoughtful birthday gifts, randomly getting you flowers, the works.

He could be the mature, calm, chill boyfriend..... but why would he want to?? Much more fun being your kind of insane boyfriend who acts like the calm and chill boyfriend in front of other people. Like sometimes he has Einstein level thoughts. Sometimes he lies to you that there is a dog behind you just for shits and giggles.

I think he has a pretty high EQ and he would give great comfort and advice if you needed it. Always there for you if you need to rant about your day and that annoying person you don't like, or if you have a problem that he has to help you solve. Empathises really well and never judges you for your honest thoughts.

Taerae really is just a great guy to begin with, but when he's in a relationship with you he is the nicest, most fun and supportive boyfriend . Always willing to go the extra mile for you and make you feel like the most loved person in the world :)

Hmmm.... I mean there's a much bigger chance that you fall in love first than the other way around. That being said: he's absolutely whipped when he does start liking you back. Like. Gyubin would make fun of him because he literally can't focus on anything else when you're around. So in the end you're both fools in love <3

Oh the dates are going to be top tier. Your wish is his command and the budget is LARGE, so pretty much wherever you want to go or whatever you want to do, he will make it happen. But I think he has a soft spot for museums, art galleries, basically anything "cultural". Or just walking around the city at night and seeing what's open.

Wants to engage in your hobbies!! He will ask a million questions about your interests (sports, music, cinema, drawing, whatever you're passionate about) so he can see you nerd out and maybe understand you a little better. He will also be SO SO SO happy if you're willing to engage in his interests and watch his favourite shows with him because THAT is true love <33

Tbh he's not always great at clearly expressing or asking for affection- but the one thing he would actually ask for is head massages. After a long day, he just can't resist the temptation of spacing out while you run your hands through his hair. He is still too embarrassed to ask for it with his words though, so he just gets all quiet and leans his head onto you and hopes you get the hint (you do).

He also wants to share everything. Mostly shirts, hoodies, jackets- sometimes jewellery. Be careful because while this does mean you can borrow his stuff, he will also borrow yours. Hide your shit if there's something you want to keep to yourself.

He is trying to be the cool, sophisticated boyfriend- but he's just a big softie at the end of the day!! He secretly loves all the cute coupley things like fancy dates and matching necklaces, and he loves to surprise you and watch your eyes go all wide in awe. Really just wants to walk around and be in love all day <3

Friends to lovers where you meet through mutual friends and are in the same friend group for a while, silently crushing on each other until one of your other friends gets sick of the tension and tells both of you that you like each other.

Dates are very spontaneous but always fun!! If he has to run errands or go somewhere he will force you to come with him to keep him company. In return he says something to make you laugh approx. every 4 minutes to keep you entertained.

Oh when I say that he is attached to you at the hip... He can't go a full day without talking to you- either by text, on the phone, or face to face. Even when he is with you he HAS to be touching you pretty much all the time- holding your hand and playing with your fingers. If you ask him to tone it down in public he will... Begrudgingly..... Actually physically holding himself back from grabbing your hand.

His one mission every day is to make you laugh at least once. Has a folder of memes saved on his phone that he updates regularly so he can send you something every day.

Prepare to share all your drinks and food for the rest of your life. You got a smoothie?? He's taking the first sip "tO mAkE sUrE iT's nOt pOiSonEd" (you get to try his smoothie too don't worry).

Other than the fact that he needs to be next to you all the time?? He's pretty low maintenance!! Is perfectly fine with spending a whole weekend rotting away in his bedroom, cuddling up to you and scrolling through tiktok as you show each other funny videos that pop up on your fyp's.

In general I see him as being a very fun and loving boyfriend. You are kind of just besties who kiss, ya know? He genuinely likes spending time with you doing whatever- you're the funniest, kindest, best person he knows- and he lets you know by sending "ily" texts at least twice a day and holding your hand everywhere you go <3

Oh he has the world's biggest crush on you for a while before you ask him out (yes you need to ask first he's too scared <3). I'm talking "doodling your name in his notebook with hearts next to it" levels of crush. Loses his mind when you ask him out like YOU LIKE HIM BACK???? Crazy.

A very sweet and polite young man to begin with (lucky you!!), but it's going to be 10x more intense with the person he likes. Prepare yourself to be treated like you saved the world 3 times, ended world poverty, hung the stars in the sky, etc.

He's still pretty young and gets too attached too fast so initially he's very scared to mess things up. Googles 'date ideas' to come up with stuff to do and watches K-dramas to learn how to boyfriend (he has NO idea what he's doing. send help. but it's very cute). With time he becomes more chill though.

Think classic dates in the beginning; watching a movie at the cinema, going to a café, stuff like that. When he gets more comfortable it's more like chilling in his bedroom as you binge watch a netflix show or cuddle and scroll through social media in comfortable silence.

A little dramatic sometimes: he gets super excited over all your small achievements and exaggerates when he tells you how TERRIBLE and AWFUL his day was. Also needs reassurance every once in a while that you really do like him back because he gets in his own head too much. Kind of a drama queen but in the best way.

Wayyy too shy to initiate pretty much ANY type of physical affection so he hopes you will just initiate instead and hold his hand. Ya boy is trying to play it cool but is also a little ~insecure~ so he is in a constant dilemma between holding your hand versus not holding your hand. WHAT IF HE DOESN'T HOLD YOUR HAND AND THEN YOU BREAK UP WITH HIM????? He is distressed 24/7.

Overall- very sweet and shy and confused but he WILL try his best to be the bf you deserve!! He's still working on exactly how to do that but rest assured: he does love you to bits and wants more than anything to make you smile every day 🥲 Best boy.

despite the slow burn lead up to your relationship, i feel like renjun’s confession would be rlly casual like you two would be over at one of your guys’ place watching tv on the couch cuddling and renjun would just drop it like- HUH?!

it could literally be a disney movie in the background and renjun would say “you know, that character is my favourite from that movie” and you would laugh and ask him why

ok. renjun may be a relatively small man but do not underestimate his power/anger like if he found out you were ever mistreated in any way he will fight. like rip to whoever hurts you because jun would roast the heck out of that person (touch them and i’ll destroy you vibe)

your dates will either be aimlessly exploring the city and trying to find the best hotpot spots or food spots in general to just chill nights at your houses just enveloped in peace

you would feel so comfortable around each other, and could feel that the relationship was stable from the start

he seems like the type to communicate problems well and stress the importance of it. even tho it can be hard to communicate sometimes just in case it may hurt the other’s feelings, he makes sure to address the problem on the early stages because he cares and wants to be with you in the long run

he doesn’t seem like he would throw in this much effort for people he thinks isn’t worth his time and energy

the best thing about dating renjun would be that you would feel at home with each other, you guys realise early on that you are each other’s rock, that you can trust each other with your lives and be each other’s driving force to become your best selves

chan would have emo/e-girl vibes, the type of girl whose wardrobe consists of 99% black. lots of silver jewelry. the chunkier kind,, black leather too, and of course her nails would be painted black as well (a little chipped from biting them). pleated skirts, chain belts and oversized sweaters. big platform shoes to make her look taller and fishnet stockings to show off her pretty legs <33 n piercings! a nose & belly button piercing for sure bc of course chan would have the prettiest tummy :)) her preferred hair color would be black (relaxed, not curled) or 2 tone with either black + silver grey or a neon color

leeknow's style would be a mixture of comfortable athleisure and a more preppy clean aesthetic. padded jackets, hoodies, sweatpants and ofc converse :)) minimal jewelry,, if any. probably just some (cat) bracelets. she'd prefer to dye her hair in natural colors like dark brown. in winter she wears soft chunky wool sweaters. she uses very little makeup but she loves her cherry chapstick, and how it makes her lips all sweet and sticky and kissable <33

han would be right at home in leeknow's sweaters :)) sungie loves borrowing her friends' clothes. her style is similar to minho's but with some edgier street vibes thrown in,, like bucket hats and ripped jeans or cargo pants. goes through experimental phases (including a punk phase and dying her hair all colors of the rainbow) but always falls back on her comfy clothes <33 never goes far without her noise canceling headphones

felix likes expensive things,, likes them to be well fitted and neat. she loves soft n cute things too and often mixes aesthetics. a natural blonde <33 knows exactly what flatters her features (makeup, clothes, etc). could be wearing some high end jewelry paired with fluffy knee socks — anything she feels like,, and she looks amazing in it. bright and light colors look best on her but at night she'll turn up wearing a tiny black dress and make everyone do a double take 😵‍💫

seungmin breathes academia vibes! somewhere between light and dark academia, but always looking sharp and pristine. the kind of timeless beauty who knows how to accentuate her features,, with the perfect haircut (somewhere in the middle) and the right amount of makeup to make her beautiful face stand out. she'd wear tortoiseshell rimmed glasses,, a vintage pair she found in a shop downtown. lots of warm brown leather and tweed to finish off her daily look <33

i.n is on top of all the latest trends. she's just so cool 😫 her style is trendy but relaxed,, a city vibe with her oversized jackets and her shoe collection. rocks a bob or a ponytail like no other ! she buys vintage sometimes,, stuff like those 80s adidas jackets, seamlessly mixing them with her modern day sneakers. her style is very laid back but she knows how to dress up n loves a good red lip <33

Today was going to be a big day.

You’ve had this in your vision for a long time now and it couldn’t be refrained from, and even though were excited about it, it was accompanied by an unrecognizable worry.

Human emotions can never be easily caught and understood, you see.

You were sat in the car, paying zero attention to the otherwise lively streets of the city.

It was your city, the place where you were born, raised, and probably conceived, too.

You had missed it all. The the swings in the children's playground, the aroma of the morning bakery on the other block, the back alley of the school that you vandalised, everything.

After a gruelling few years outside, you were back and that was all that mattered in the moment.

“Are you too emotional to talk right now?” Questioned the man seated next to you. Joshua, your boyfriend.

“Shua, Yeah, It’s just, you know.” You failed to put your thoughts into words.

“Is it because you’re too emotional that we’re here or are you afraid that I might screw it all up in front of your parents?” He let out an adorable little giggle.

Four years of being together and this man knew you better than yourself.

His coral black eyes teamed up with comforting and deep aura questioned once again.

Yes. You were afraid, not because Joshua would mess it up but only because it was only natural to feel that way.

He was the first man you were bringing home, he had had innumerous zoom calls and texts with your parents whilst the two of you still being in away, they knew him and approved of him.

Then, what was so special about this day perhaps someone who had to go through it could only understand.

It did not take too long to reach. They say there is no place on earth like home, the vibe welcomed you as you took steps further.

“Trust me, everything will go well. We just have to be ourselves right? They’re parents.” Joshua affirmed.

“I know they'll love you.” You added to his affirmation.

“Of course. More than they love you.” He teased, and his lips turned into a smirk. On normal days, you would hit him playfully.

You shook your head, returning back to the time and place as you now rang the doorbell. Taking few quick breaths to ease your tensed body.

You were greeted by your parents, and you instantly leaped up and went on to engulf them in a hug. Losing track of time you were sure you did not let go of them before a good few minutes.

“Alright, alright! My turn?” Joshua commented so as to ease the emotional environment. He made you laugh, even when you had tears rolling down.

The family now sat in the living room. Your boyfriend was completely engrossed in the chit chats with your family, as they went through your childhood photo albums.

Everybody seemed to accept him at an instant. It felt like it was him who was this family’s child.

“Noooo Y/N, you were so cute as a baby! Look at you in this pumpkin outfit. When is this from?” He kept on commenting while you just sat there, adoring him.

Honestly he was the type that anyone could take home and get approved of. You were lucky to find a man like Joshua, he tolerated your unbearable shower concerts. You thought to yourself.

The gathering soon ended after dinner, and there was more talking and sharing of old family anecdotes. You were the main theme today, though. It felt gratifying.

As the night grew deeper, you found yourself alone with the man, seated on near the same window pane you thought you'd get a highscool proposal from someday.

“Hmm, told you everything would turn out well. You were stressing over nothing” Joshua soothed.

"How could anyone not like you, Shua?” You defended yourself, teasing him.

“Ahhh, really?” He questioned sarcastically. A little roar of laughter now filled the air as he tickled you by the waist.

Well, he was right, everything would go well.

You sat on the park bench, the sun dipping low on the horizon and painting the sky with warm, rosy hues. Beside you, Surya faced you, his rich, freckled skin glowing in the fading light. His wavy black hair framed a face that was charming yet shy, his eyes glancing in your direction but never quite meeting yours.

He was chatting nervously, talking about how much he enjoyed the day, the words spilling out as if he were afraid of the silence. "I really liked the restaurant," he was saying, his voice soft. "Did you like it too?"

You nodded, smiling. "I loved it."

The two of you lapsed into a comfortable silence, the sounds of the city around you a gentle backdrop to your thoughts.

Surya suddenly looked up, his eyes wide. "Do you want more ice cream?" he asked, his voice tinged with anxiety.

You shook your head and reached over, moving with a grace and gentleness that seemed to mesmerise him. You kissed him softly on the cheek, feeling the warmth of his skin against your lips.

He froze, his eyes wide, and then he grinned, tips of his ears turning a dark, dusty pink. His hand came up to touch the spot where your lips had been, a look of wonder in his eyes.

You smiled, feeling a connection that went beyond mere physical attraction. "I've had a wonderful time today, Surya," you said softly.

He looked at you, his eyes searching your face. "Would you... would you like to go on another date?" he stammered, his voice full of hope.

You reached over and took his hand, feeling the nervous tremble in his fingers. "I'd like that very much," you whispered, your heart full of a warmth that had nothing to do with the setting sun.

His face broke into a smile, a smile that was so genuine and joyful that it took your breath away. "Really?" he asked, his voice full of wonder.

"Really," you confirmed, and kissed him again.

Skip and Loafer Episode 2: Fidgeting and Wandering

Where to start, where to start indeed. This second episode is where Skip and Loafer begins to spread its wings. It establishes the friend group in more concrete terms, it injects real high school struggle into both Mitsumi as a character and the friend group at large, and gives hints as to where the story wants to go. With the wonderful direction (all forms: art, main, etc. etc.) and voice acting, even though it's only two episodes in, Skip and Loafer is finding ways to begin to set up shop as a classic RomCom/Slice of Life. Though I guess you're asking what really makes it so good.

So let's start with the pieces that stand out to me the most. Gender identity and sexuality. Mitsumi affectionately calls her aunt Nao-chan, and they have a really fun and cute relationship as they live together in Tokyo. But that doesn't stop other people from souring it. Whether or not it's true (of which I'll refrain from commenting on), some girls on the train mistake Nao-chan to be a man. It's certainly a painful scene, and the direction adds to it a great deal.

Focusing on all the parts that clearly define Nao-chan as a woman, there remains one barely notable feature to their neck that the girls latch onto. Nao-Chan paints her nails, she wears jewelry and makeup, and even has a decidedly feminine hairstyle. But because of one aspect, a pair of girls end up singling out Nao-Chan

In the end though, all it takes is Mitsumi's odd smile to bring Nao-Chan back. It's a really heartwarming moment, and the layouts for all of it are just incredible.

In a similar story we get introduced to a new character today, Kanechika, the president of the drama club. He's going around trying to recruit as many people as possible for his club as they've been having a real hard time with getting girls to sign up for the club. Because of that, we get some really wonderful expectation subversion, and some really powerful commentary without even speaking a word.

A pair of high heels emerges from the hallway, and we can see the band-aids sticking out from them.

But these heels don't belong to a girl, they belong to Kanechika of the drama club.

The importance of this scene is twofold. Firstly, the expectation subversion of Kanechika being a man, even though the heels were shown first. And secondly, the fact that there are band-aids on his feet.

So, the expectation subversion. Skip and Loafer is already leaning heavily into expression of gender and sexuality in very free terms which is wonderful. With Tanechika, we're shown that "feminine" things aren't just relegated to only women wearing them, and that they don't even need to be a part of a more feminine-appearing style. By nature, clothing and other fashion items are gender neutral. Alongside that, Kanechika is provided as a perfect vehicle for displaying the harsh and even cruel style and fashion norms applied to women. Just because of the type of shoes he's wearing, he has to have band-aids on his feet.

It's a really incredible little piece that does almost no talking, but speaks volumes about the approach that the author wants with the story.

Overall, I'd say it's something that's spoken to in the episode in general, and goes on to surpass even gender and sexuality norms and their standards in society. If I were to put a description to it, I'd say it's an episode about the unspoken sides of people, and how it affects them when voiced by others.

Like Mitsumi being forced to be aware of her more shy side, and how she comes from a small town despite wanting to come to Tokyo and take in the big city. Or Shima's piece about his relation to "Kanade". It all represents pieces of the characters that they want to let go of, but those around them won't let them be free of what they might see as a curse that stains their history.

It's a really wonderful extension of that vibe that the first episode gave off. These characters are larger than life, but their emotions, their histories, their fears, it's all so human.

Well, now that that bow has been neatly tied on how outstanding the episode is in terms of story and character progression. How about a quick roundup before some technical stuff?

I really liked that they found a natural way to instill drama and an objective in the story outside of "small town girl making it in the big city". The drama club seems to be the piece that ties it all together, as it allows Mitsumi to push past some of her (sort of) fears and concerns, as well as establish a very important piece to a younger character: freedom and malleability. Mitsumi has it set in her heart to be a government official when she grows up, and you can already see that it stunts her freedom and enjoyment of being a high school student. With that in mind, I'm hopeful to see some exploration of Mitsumi's other sides that she was unable to express in her smaller setting, and that they'll blossom within her new environment.

In the same vein we'll also have Shima, who seems to have been a somewhat popular actor when he was younger. Running away from the spotlight for reasons unknown (though not exactly hard to potentially guess at). Given his affinity for Mitsumi, I'm sure we'll see some wonderful moments with him as he rediscovers his passion for drama, and how he'll be able to push past whatever is blocking him to allow him to enjoy his life to its fullest and take part in the things he's passionate about.

Phew, alright. Technical stuff! I'm a massive fan of directors that are bold enough to take wide shots in series. It removes the viewer from the character more, and gives a far more "outside" look than what some might be used to. But I feel like it puts just the right amount of distance in between to allow people to think somewhat differently about the characters.

As well as that, Deai's use of wide and empty shots helps illustrate how alone some of the characters can end up feeling, though in different ways. We've got a few wide shots of Mitsumi, but in sort of different fashion. The first is all about her isolation from the friend group, so while it expresses the emptiness of the scene, it also has a cramped feel thanks to the environment. Probably not intentional, but it makes it feel more suffocating, especially compared to the other example.

Though I think the icing on the cake is the fact that Mitsumi's friend, Fumi, being outside and in wide open space helps sell that cramped feeling even more.

However, this next shot of Mitsumi is outside, so the feeling (once more, probably unintentional) is of a wider and freer stage. It feels more like Mitsumi's left to think on things on her own than it is that she's isolated herself in the moment. Though her body language speaks to that quite well, as she has a stronger and more upright posture here than in the prior image where she's more sullen and shrunken.

Either way, the acknowledgement of space and scale is very apparent in this episode, and it's really great. It's easy to forget about where the characters are since most series end up zoned in on them, but here we get plenty of space to keep their existences relatively small and within the boundaries of how "big" high school can feel to the average person.

If I were to pick my favorite bits of this use of awareness and scale, it would be the hallway/pavilion scene of Shima and Mitsumi for sure. They use the difference in height between the pair to imply how Mitsumi looks up to Shima, and include some of shots of Shima's back. A bit of a two-in-one, it's callback to how Shima was inspired by Mitsumi on the first day of school and was chasing her, and now we have the inverse as true where Mitsumi is trying to catch up to Shima. Though the sentiment is different between the renditions, the former is Mitsumi going off on her own and Shima chasing after, while the latter is Shima leaving Mitsumi behind while Mitsumi is trying to keep pace with Shima.

There's a world of other stuff out there in the episode, like the flashback pieces and how it frames Mitsumi's approach to friendship and understanding people, or how organic the process of high school friendship and camaraderie is shown to be through indirect interactions, or even how cute and natural Shima and Mitsumi are together as they play the role of sunshine in each other's lives. But I think this is a good place to call it.

Skip and Loafer really is selling itself incredibly well on all fronts already though. P.A Works was probably nobody's (aside from fans of Akiba Maid War) top choice for this adaptation, but they've proven a great deal within such a short period of time. Really incredible work on both ends, and I can't wait for the next episode!

But to you today I bring a special for this time of fell omens: Profiles of thirty-one citizens of the states of Hell, a place most misunderstood in your material plane not for the depths of its horrors but the nature of what those horrors are.

To understand the state of Hell you must understand one fundamental truth: The Devil is a loser.

His best chance at dethroning God was the fall, and it was doomed from the start. He is never going to get a chance like that again.

Heaven considers his place a cosmic backwater, no threat when compared to things like The Machine or Nemesis The Anti-Sun. But he cannot bring himself to understand this, for to do so would shatter further his thirteen faces.

His realm is a cosmic mistake, a wound where generations toil in service of a goal that can never be completed to start a war they cannot win.

It is a place where not just the tortured but the torturers live in misery. Where power crushes love beneath its foot and they say that every demon is a king, but in a way that belies no comprehension of the horror of that statement.

It is, perhaps, more akin to your world than you or I would perhaps care to admit.

Unto this realm they tell you to abandon all hope, ye who enter here, but here I tell you to hold onto your hopes, as tightly as possible. You'll need them to survive here.

SO! I have yet another project, this time it's a simple one, 31 demons over the rest of this Halloween season! Because I made a few and then decided that's what I was going to do!

The vibe of the hell-scene here's meant to make one think of John Martin-type grandiose scenes but combined with the very specific US-based hell-nightmare of a non-walkable city! My version of Hell is generally a lot like this, half great and terrible grandeur, half shitty mundane Bush/Trump-era America vibes. Hopefully the opening text provided that.

Some Musings on Avoiding Empire (OLD ESSAY)

This essay was originally posted on July 14th, 2021.

In this essay, I continue my musings on how a democratic socialist state engages in warfare in support of like-minded allies and partners and peoples across the world without falling into the trap of becoming the same as the empires it wishes to both forsake and combat. I don't pretend to have the answers completely, but I at least try to get the ball rolling.

When I first started writing these essays, the earliest topics that I covered – and the ones that I keep returning to consistently throughout the overall thread of my work – is that a.) war isn’t going anywhere, and b.) it’s something that we need to understand and be prepared for on the left, even under a different system to the one we live under now. To that end, I’ve talked about the circumstances under which it may be necessary for us to go to war.

However – disregarding those who are acting in bad faith or have ulterior motives – there are still many people who have justifiable misgivings about the idea of the United States or any great power or superpower using force, even under a hypothetically more just governing system and even if it is defendable as the right thing to do under specific circumstances. I’ve had a number of conversations with friends on this topic, which has come up sporadically as various events and crises unfold in the world and the topic of outside intervention invariably arise. While I hold a different view, I can understand why some folks may be suspicious of or hesitant to suddenly get behind the idea of a powerful state notionally using its military power for “good” – especially those who live in other countries and have had to live at the whims of U.S. foreign policy or that of other foreign powers. To some, it may simply seem like empire under a different name.

That raises a question that I felt was worth an essay in its own right: in that hypothetical future I try to think about from getting too bummed out with the present, how do you conduct a global foreign and defense policy without being an empire? While I don’t think the idea of a changed-United States or any country using military power in a more just fashion is equivalent to empire in its own right, I feel like the danger of backsliding into imperialistic attitudes is still very much present and a danger. I see how it could be very easy to make a poor decision here, an exception there, and end up doing the same sort of foreign policy that got us where we are today.

After spending some time pondering this, I’ve come up with an extremely non-scientific, purely vibes-based set of principles that – while I make no claims towards being definitive, exhaustive, or foolproof – seem like a good starting point for how to carry out the kinds of concepts I rail on about without just being what we currently have and have had before but in a different guise. Those four principles, which I will go into more detail on each below, include: being selective of allies and partners, respecting countries’ consent, promoting countries’ self-sufficiency, and maintaining a minimal international footprint. Some or all of these may seem obvious to some, but I’ve found in this day and age, I can’t take anything like this for granted. So, let us begin.

1. Being Selective of Allies and Partners

To be a good leftist or socialist or however you label yourself, one almost by definition needs to be a good internationalist. You should care not only about improving the lives of everyone in your own community, city or country, but also about improving the lives of all people, everywhere. Thus, part of this naturally should entail establishing partnerships and forging alliances with countries that are similarly inclined in order to defend one another from hostile forces and to continue to try and improve things the world over (yes I realize this may sound a bit sappy and idealistic as I type this out, especially in the current environment, but I have to believe that something like this is achievable and that life is not endless sorrow and agony).

Note, that the key terms here are finding allies in countries that have similar principles, those principles of course being things like a democratic system of government, freedom of expression, freedom of the press, a legal and judicial system that isn’t draconian and doesn’t grind a bootheel into the neck of its citizens, supporting said citizens from want and deprivation, etc. etc. All that good stuff that we’re into, and that some governments claim they’re about.

When you look back at the history of the United States and other great powers from the past, you’ll find that the track record of finding allies based on these principles is “spotty” if I’m going to be charitable. The Cold War is an excellent example of this. When the United States searched for partners across the globe in its competition against the Soviet Union, its criteria were more about whether or not governments or leaders opposed communism rather than sharing any sort of affinity towards the principles that the United States claimed to value. What this resulted in was the United States supporting or installing regimes that were extremely right-wing or even fascistic purely on the basis of them hating communism (or any form of leftism) and doing everything they could to oppose it – including mass oppression, imprisonment, and murder of their own citizens. From Latin America, to Africa, to the Middle East and the Far East, you’d be hard pressed to find an area where the United States didn’t support a questionable regime in the course of great power politics.

This practice found new life to a different ideological end following the September 11th Attacks and the outbreak of the Global War on Terrorism. This time, the enemy wasn’t communism, but Islamic fundamentalist terrorism. If the United States wasn’t choosy about its allies during the Cold War, it was even less so in finding allies and partners to help it fight al Qaeda and similar groups – some of which were about just as bad as al Qaeda, had a role in its formation, or were even actively supporting them or other similarly minded or aligned groups like the Taliban.

This is a very long-winded way of me saying, in the future, if we want to conduct ourselves justly in the world of international relations, it means thinking critically about who our friends are. This is a problem that not only conservatives and liberals have, but far too many people on the left have when it comes to uncritically supporting unabashedly authoritarian regimes just because they’re aesthetically leftist or just anti-American. If we don’t want to be morally bankrupt to our own beliefs, then we’ll have to take a long, hard look at any country we consider as an ally and about whether aligning ourselves to them is the right thing to do, or something we’re doing purely out of self-interest or for political or ideological street cred.

2. Respecting the Consent of Other Countries

Our being more selective of allies and partners based on our principles and beliefs is only one part of the equation when it comes to working with other countries throughout the world. The flip side to aligning ourselves to countries more in sync with what we believe, is also realizing that countries and their populaces may not always necessarily want to be our ally, even if we think they have much in common with us and we’d like to help them. As with many other things in life, the magic word here is consent. If a country and its people do not consent to accepting help from us, then forcing the issue is simply adopting a paternal or imperialistic attitude.

There may be a myriad of reasons for this. Part of it may be the suspicion and wariness that I spoke of earlier, which may take generations to pass for some – or may potentially never pass for others. But there may be other reasons as well. The reasons matter less though, then what a country – but more importantly, its people – want. At the end of the day, if a government does not want anything to do with us or any other country offering help, and this is a genuine reflection of the will of its people as a whole, then that’s that. Unless they change their mind at some point in the future, any further efforts are simply trying to unjustly impose your will on another country – the very thing we’re supposed to be trying to avoid.

This same sort of logic applies to supporting movements seeking liberation, whether they are trying to establish an independent state for their people, or to overthrow a government that is oppressing them. Even if we have much in common with the principles of a liberation movement and want to help them, if they want nothing to do with us, we really have nothing else we can do other than cheer them on and wish for the best and hope maybe they change their minds. If I’ve found one thing out from being active on the internet as an artist and writer for most of my adult life, it’s that you can’t force people to be you friends. Sometimes, things just don’t ‘click’ from one end, and you just have to accept you’ll never be as close as you’d like things to be. Sometimes people may warm up to you over time or under different circumstances, but the key thing is that’s up to them, not you. In my eyes, the same thing applies to this case.

Now, I feel like there are potentially exceptions here. One big one that comes to mind is when humanitarian intervention comes up, such as intervention to provide aid to a starving populace or to stop the genocide of a group of people by a state – something behind the basis of the United Nations concept of Responsibility to Protect (something that is invoked far too little in my opinion). These are cases where you can strongly argue that its acceptable to intervene without a request for help – or that it is actually necessary to do so in order to prevent further death and destruction. That all being said, I also think if you look back through history, you’ll be very hard pressed to find any situation where a people were being brutally massacred or were starving to death and were flatly refusing any assistance and aid rather than begging any country with the means to do so to save them from being wiped out. But I felt I should bring that one up regardless just for the sake of being intellectually honest on the issue of consent.

We see the repercussions of ignoring the idea of consent across twenty years of Forever War, in particular Afghanistan and Iraq. While the United States may have initially been welcomed as liberators in both countries and both the Taliban in Afghanistan and Ba’athist state in Iraq were objectively terrible regimes, at the end of the day there was no genuine, country-wide mass movements or representatives of said movements requesting that the United States aid them in their liberation. Our invasions of those countries were forced on them from the outside, and that is part of why they were doomed to failure from the start – as most regime changes are.

3. Promoting Self-Sufficiency

Throughout the modern era, great powers have lavished military aid and arms sales upon allies and partners that suited them. Such aid could be made under the claims of ensuring that country’s ability to defend itself or being out of some notion of brotherhood and comradeship. Of course, like so many things, this aid is also about the game of great power politics and serves just as much as an instrument of influence and control as it did as a means of self-defense – if not more. As much great powers have an interest in ensuring certain countries could defend themselves and their regimes, they also had a vested interest – for many reasons – in making sure said countries were dependent upon them in some shape or form for defense.

There are some glaring examples of this seeding of dependence in how the United States provides military aid or sells arms to other countries currently, especially in an age of more complicated and technologically sophisticated weapons. Often the United States provides arms and armaments to an ally or partner without going through the effort of teaching and enabling them how to maintain them. Instead, it will simply employ contractors or even U.S. military personnel to maintain the equipment for the country, meaning that country is dependent upon the U.S. and U.S. companies (who also naturally have a vested interest in continuing to make money from servicing said equipment) for their defense – putting them in a precarious position.

Under a more just system, the intent of such aid prior to a conflict actually breaking out, would be the exact opposite. The primary purpose of our support to a country in bolstering its defense should be to make it self-sufficient as possible in its own defense, so that it will only need outside help under the most dire of circumstances. We should be genuinely trying to help a country stand on its two feet and not be beholden to any outside power for its survival (and this should be the case in general with all things, though obviously I’m focusing on defense and the military here as that is my wheelhouse and the focus of this blog, but felt it needed calling out). This would mean not only providing arms to a country, but also teaching them how to maintain them, helping them build the means to maintain them domestically, or even setting up their own domestic ability to produce weapons and material, and more – if they are able to do so.

The old adage goes that if you love something, set it free. Well, if we truly care about the well-being of an ally, then we should be building them up so that at the end of the day, they either don’t need us at all or only need us when things get really bad. If we treat them well and help them earnestly and in good faith, then even when they don’t need us, they will want to stand alongside us in defense of the same, shared ideas and belief. Likewise, we’ll have made that community of like-minded peoples and governments stronger by increasing the overall ability to defend itself as a whole against hostile, reactionary forces.

4. Maintaining a Minimal Footprint

One of the aspects of U.S. imperial attitudes that is brought up much on the left is the expansive, worldwide U.S. military presence. The United States maintains bases and troops to varying degrees in a wide swath of countries across the globe – around 40% of the world’s countries in 2019. These bases can serve as a point of serious contention even in countries where their presence is more welcome or at least not reviled. Even if they are not significantly or directly affecting the country they are located in, overseas bases are a lightning rod for their role in perpetuating conflict and U.S. imperialism. As a result, what I often have heard on the left is a desire for the United States to vacate all of its overseas military bases and bring all of its troops back home. While I completely understand this desire and empathize with it, I also feel it is unrealistic if in the future we want to be anything other than isolationist and inward looking – something that is incompatible with the very idea of socialism.

Contemporary warfare is a fast-moving endeavor, under which reacting quickly can mean the difference between victory and defeat – as well as how much destruction is visited and how many lives are lost. Even if we wish to spurn being an imperial power, if we want to be in any position to help other countries that come under attack by an aggressor and are unable to defend themselves on their own and request assistance, we need to be able to react swiftly so that our solidarity doesn’t end up coming too late to be of any help to those under attack. Having a military that can rapidly deploy, rather than be permanently or semi-permanently forward-deployed – may actually deter potential conflict better anyway.

Of course, rapid deployment of forces this still means crossing vast distances of time and space to get to wherever an ally may be in danger. So, in my typical wishy-washy, “enlightened centrist leftist” fashion, I advocate there has to be some kind of middle ground. If we want to be of any help to allies and partners but still avoid empire, any overseas military installations we maintain need to be kept to a bare minimum. They need to be limited only to what we think we really need. What we “need” should be based on doing actual analysis and assessment of what our stated national security goals are, who are allies and partners are that we anticipate we may need to come to the aid of, where they are located, and etc. It basically just requires us going through the effort of thinking critically about what we need to do what we think is important and in line with our principles and not just gobbling up bases left and right in order to further our own power, influence, control as an imperial power does.

This can’t account for every instance, of course. There may be a case when we need to come to the aid of a country or group that we did not anticipate. This is just a risk you run when planning for various scenarios of war. You set yourself up to be ready for the most likely cases, and then when the least likely or unexpected ones occur, you make do best you can. In those instances, we may be able to lease bases or request temporary access for the duration of a campaign from a third country along the way to the operational area – packing up and going home ASAP once our (hopefully) very clearly defined objectives have been completed.

With that in mind, we should be viewing these bases as being temporal in general. None of them should be thought of as “permanent.” We should be planning out our needs with the idea that they will change over time. We should be reassessing on a regular basis as to what ones we still need, based on the abilities of our allies and partners, the various threats we face, and so on. Over time, it may make more sense to leave one base and set up shop somewhere else. Not only does it make good strategic sense, but it also aids in avoiding digging in roots and fostering imperial attitudes towards the lands that we’re supposed to be guests in – not overlords of.

At the end of the day, no matter how good of relations you have with a country, over time you’re going to wear out a welcome. That in itself is not a good reason to not have military forces stationed overseas at all, but it is a good reason to make sure we only maintain the bases and troops we really need to honor our principles and commitments – especially in peacetime. Despite our widespread military presence currently, most of the military still is stationed in the United States, so it really wouldn’t be that huge of a change. It would just mean thinking harder about what paths and processes we need to rapidly move it to a conflict zone. Really, a lot of this is about thinking harder in general, not only about what we believe as leftists, but also about practical applications of military force and the challenges that involves. We just need to think.

We Can Try (And We Should)

One of the things I grapple with when I try to think of a more ethical and just use of military power is, no matter how I try to dress it, there are always going to be people that I otherwise express solidarity with that are going to be suspicious of it and opposed to it. Some people may take a very long time to come around to the idea and may only do so in part. Some may never come around to it. Frankly, I’ve come to accept that. As much as I want to try and educate and elaborate on why I think this is the realistic and right thing to do, I know that I can’t convince everyone and that ultimately, I can only do so much to try and convince people and the rest is up to them and is their own choice. That, and I can’t blame people – especially those living overseas who have been more directly affected by imperialism than I ever have – for having these attitudes towards the idea of foreign military intervention.

While that is definitely a little discouraging and demoralizing, I try not to let it get me down too much. God knows there so many traps I can fall into – and still fall into – on a daily basis that can lead to depression, discouragement, and borderline “doomerism” and “black pilled” thought with how the state of the world is and the likelihood for change. But I have to believe in something. I have to believe there can be a better world, and I also have to believe I can somehow use what I know from my professional life to contribute to that.

I strongly believe war isn’t going anywhere even if we do (and I hope we do) affect political change. I think we’re going to want to help people beyond our own borders and that will sometimes require providing military aid or carrying out military action. Doing so runs the risks of falling back into old habits unknowingly. While the ideas I’ve laid out here are by no means a panacea for avoiding that sliding back into imperialism, I feel like its maybe a solid starting point. Even if there are going to be people who will still be justifiably suspicious of trying to use military power throughout the world for any sort of positive ends – and that may create stumbling blocks towards doing so, I still think we owe it to try and be a global force for good in that hypothetical future even if it may be difficult and frustrating at times. Why? Because it’s still the right and necessary thing to do. If there’s one thing we know as lefties, it’s that doing the right thing is sometimes a demoralizing pain in the ass – but that doesn’t make it any less right.

So I was wrong :(

For context, weather is a HUGE shift trigger for me, especially what we typically think of as springtime weather. If its rainy/overcast, temps in the 50s-70s, crisp air, and a strong breeze, it's pretty much guaranteed I'll have at the least a slight mental shift. Now where I live, the weather has been weirdly warm, with temps in the low 40's and nonstop rain, so I've been shifting rather frequently, which meditating on my hearthome.

Whenever think about what my hearthome could be, I'm instantly hit with kin memories of stony hills, dense pine forests, fish-filled wetlands, plunging cliffs into the gray ocean, herds of deer and warrens of rabbits in case I ever wanted red meat, and a constant damp chill in the air. Anytime I'm in nature with a similar vibe to that, its shift city baby.

Being the ecology nerd I am, I almost instantly assumed I lived somewhere along the intersection between a boreal forest (taiga), and tundra, and I was happy with that! I mean it checks all the boxes- cold, the right type of plants, big ol' mountains, sometimes wet, and with fish and large game aplenty! But the one thing I could never get around was how cold it actually got that far north.

I HATE snow. I really cant stand it, and I don't really have any kin memories it. I mean, how does an arctic dragon hate snow? I thought about how I also hate when it gets dark early in the winter, because it messes with my sleep schedule severely. Well, I guess that must mean I hibernate! If I have a diet and lifestyle similar to a brown bear, I probably have torpor like one too!

And I stuck with that thought process for months and months, until today. Like I said, I've been in shift city due to the weather, despite the fact that I almost never have weather-triggered shift when it's colder than 40, or snowy. I don't have any kin memories of either snow OR settling down for hibernation, hell, I don't even have kin memories of midnight sun.

So, after hours of research on the wikipedia page for ecoregions, I came to the conclusion that I'm not from a boreal forest/taiga, but probably a temperate broadleaf and mixed forest, the most similar ecoregion I can find being the Caledon conifer forests and the north Atlantic moist mixed forests.

Basically, where I lived was closest to the sparse, grassy, and mountainous forests, bogs, and moors of Ireland and Scotland!

I'm very happy about finding a new detail about my past life, but unfortunately it means I'm going to have to do a lot more meditation to make up for some of the assumptions I've made about my hibernation, by lifestyle, what foods I ate, and how I lived day-to-day. Despite looking and feeling similar, boreal forests and temperate broadleaf and mixed forests are VASTLY different environments, with vastly different adaptations.

Moral of the story: Don't be afraid to admit you're wrong about a kin memory, or that you interpreted the cause of a shift incorrectly, or any mistake you might have made in your own personal kin journey. It hurts a lot to know this environment I've put so much thought and love into wasn't actually my home, but I'm so much happier being closer to the truth.

okay, so i want to talk a little about eddie munson’s relationship to sex and his sexuality, since i haven’t really addressed it beyond his obvious queerness. tw for SA mention && general nsfw

given the time period, ‘queer’ in the way we use it today wasn’t super commonly used, the reclamation of the word was pretty much in its infancy, and for the most part was still largely used as a slur, so while eddie will crack jokes to those he’s close too and trust about being a queer, it’s not really how he’d self identify his sexuality. he is pansexual, but while pansexual was used in the 80′s wasn’t super commonly used, and more so used within the kink and leather communities. so eddie, if pushed would shrug and tell you he’s gay or whatever, he likes both, doesn’t discriminate, likes to keep his options open --you get the idea. he’s more a vibes over gender type person, but definitely has more crushes on boys.

so what you gotta know is hawkins eddie, and Indianapolis eddie is two very different persona’s, in the city he is much more confident and flirty, and openly queer (in safe spaces), he can put on his persona and be the very best version he wishes he could always, but eddie is a flirt naturally, so while he is more sure of himself in indy, boy will flirt regardless.

most of what he’s learned about sex, has been with the men he met in gay clubs in indianapolisis, he got a fake ID when he was 16, as soon as he could drive and started going into the city, at first it was dive bars and punk scene type venues, and eventually he learned about club 21, and stated to explore the gay scene as a baby queer who had limited experience with men or women. most of his experience were with much older men, who sweet talked him, and took advantage of naivety pushing his limits beyond what he was comfortable with. Almost all of his sexual experiences with older men haven’t been favourable, and the consent has been questionable at best, and down right absent in other cases.

eddie is vers, however given his bad experience in the past, he will say he’s a top, in order to protect himself and avoid getting hurt again, if he’s the one calling the shots it has to go in his favour, right? he does have an interest in kink and BDSM, although he isn’t super well versed on things, since his limited experience comes from older ‘dominant’ tops, and while he has had at least one good experience with a guy who was only 4 years his senior, who taught him all about safe words, and traffic light code, and even taught him some shirbari, which he is super fascinated by.

he is vaguely aware of hanky code, and queer flagging, he knows as much in that wearing it in his back pocket signals to fellow queers he is queer, but not so much in the in depth knowledge that wearing a black one in his left pocket means he’s flagging as an S&M top, however close to the truth that may be, it’s purely coincidental. but when someone points that out to him in indy, he goes along with it, and finds it a little funny since, he’s only really bottomed at this point.

as far as his gender presentation and identity goes, he’s cis-ish, but very much gender non-conforming, metalhead fashion has a lot of cross over with queer fashion and i think that’s super important to take note of, w.a.s.p which, eddie has a pin of so clearly is a fan’s style was very much gender nonconforming, and then you have the lead singer of Judas Priest, Rob Halford, an openly gay man (although closeted at the time in ‘86) who had HUGE influence on metal fashion and pushing the boundaries of gender fuckery in fashion, eddie is absolutely influenced by him, by bowie, by elements of hair metal style and punk too, all of which have an over arching theme of gender nonconformity, so to eddie, call him a boy, a girl, anything in between and he literally wouldn’t give a shit, he’s an any pronouns kinda bitch and i love that for him.

Stockholm Week 8: Quality Family Time

This week was full of rest and exploration. My family came to Stockholm last week and they left on Saturday. For the rest of their stay, we visited many more places that I know and don’t know.

** Some of the top restaurants of this week that I recommend are Noburu (Östermalm) and IPEN (Hornstull)

3/4 Mon: Paradox Museum

I took my family to Katarina Lift, which allowed us to see the whole city view of Stockholm.

We took a little adventure afterward by not taking the same way back but going over the bridge. It turned out to be the same place where I went on the Crime Fiction field trip last Wednesday! I had no idea that these two locations were in such proximity. Monteliusvägen was actually one of the places I was going to take my family, so we toured around the area since we were there already.

The main attraction today was the Paradox Museum. It was near the T-Centralen area. It’s a secret between us but we got lost on the way there… The logo was on top of the subway sign, on the second floor, so we naturally thought that we had to go up; we wandered around in the random buildings and elevators for a little too long. At last, we found out that the museum was located in the subway station.

We FINALLY entered the museum and enjoyed the paradox surrounding us.

3/5 Tue: National Museum

Tuesday's museum was the national museum which has thousands of artworks. We weren’t planning on staying there for more than two hours but ended up leaving after three hours of thorough examination.

While touring the museum, I finally found what type of art I like. I especially like the paintings with a focus on nature, especially flowers and rivers.

I swear I have something with water lilies; I was mesmerized by this painting the moment I saw it. When I read the description afterward, it mentioned Monet’s water lily series, which was my favorite painting back in the National Gallery in London.

When we took a rest at the cafe on the main floor, I lost the sticker (the form of the ticket). I had stuck it on the back of my hand at first but later moved it to my clothes. This was not a good decision as it was gone before I knew it. Throughout fika time, I looked around everywhere but failed to spot it. Thankfully, I found it in the corner when I was about to leave the cafe.

Before leaving the museum, we strolled around the sculpture garden. It was beautiful!

For dinner, we visited Noburu sushi in Östermalm. Everything was affordable and of excellent quality!!! It’s very close to DIS, so I will definitely visit again soon :)

Plus, the miso soup is in the self-serve bar!

3/6 Wed: Royal Palace

Guess what? We went to Gamla Stan again (hehe). But! We went to visit the Royal Palace, not to go on endless walks as usual.

We unfortunately missed the change of guards by a matter of minutes. To remedy(?) the disappointment, we entered the Royal Palace. We looked around the Royal Apartments, the Treasury, and the Tre Kronor Museum with the general ticket.

It was such a sunny day with breezes here and there, so we couldn’t resist going around the streets in Gamla Stan as well. As I predicted, my mom LOVED everything about Gamla Stan (the colors, architecture, shops, etc.).

After shopping at the souvenir shops, I took them to Mariatorgets to let my family experience Stockholm-vibe treasure hunting in second-hand stores. My mom found some gems in Stockholm Stadsmission and I found a cute teddy bear skirt in Myrorna.

3/7 Thu: Public Library + City Hall

I trusted my dad too much. He led us to the National Library, but the actual library we wanted to go to was the Stockholm Public Library.

I instantly realized why it was so famous—the interior was beautiful

The sun was out again! Thus we leisurely walked along the water by the city hall.

I could NOT open my eyes because of the sun

I had been craving gelato for a month (I have all the top gelato places in Stockholm saved in Google Maps) and headed to one nearby. Despite the thirty-minute journey, I failed to find the place. I think that they only open during the summer. I refused to give up and led my family to another gelato place near our apartment, but it was also temporarily closed (this was what I got for trusting Google Maps)... I took it as God’s words and refrained from further events based on luck (i.e. TooGoodToGo). We bought some bread at ICA and returned to our Airbnb.

We only walked around 10,000 steps that day but we were exhausted for some reason. This unfortunately? resulted in a 3-hour nap that made us decide to stay in Airbnb for the rest of the day.

3/8 Fri: T-Centralen

My family’s last shopping opportunity in Stockholm took place in T-Centralen. We went to an Italian restaurant, Carl’s Deli, which was located in a food court. I couldn’t resist the 4.8-star rating and it was indeed worth the wait.

My mom loved COS and ARKIVET, which are two clothing stores with very different atmospheres. It was my first time in Arkivet and I think it had the best quality out of all the second-hand clothes I’ve been to.

After dinner, it was time for me to say goodbye to my family once again.

It was such a relaxing and memorable family vacation!

3/9 Sat: Lectures

I spent the entire day catching up on my online Reactions class. I watched 8+ lectures and worked on the homework for the upcoming week. This resulted in a record number of 214 steps the entire day (compared to the average of 11,000 steps over the last 7 days). My sole route of the day was from my bed to my desk.

3/10 Sun: Essays

I thought the midterm season was over, but I guess not. I have 2 essay midterms this upcoming week, one 4-page essay in the Crime Fiction course and three 2.5-page essays in the TV Film course. Therefore, all my time today was devoted to reviewing outlines and adding final touches to the essays.

When I got sick of writing essays, I cleaned our bathroom, went grocery shopping, and cooked dinner on top of meal prep for tomorrow. Cleaning the entire bathroom was another level of refreshment

This kimchi fried cabbage+rice was the BEST meal I cooked during my chef career in Stockholm!!!
