❥You were friends with Huntress Wizard first. You were drawn in by her charm. She was real down to Earth. Her love of the wilderness was something you found yourself connecting with, and you’d help her with forest upkeep when you had free time. 

❥There were many moments of thrill, where you’d have to help get rid of invasive species or come across a hostile animals. Even more moments of serenity. It was these moments you found yourself growing fonder of her, a deep affection that’s a bit stronger than just friendly. 

❥When you finally recognized these feelings, they were quickly squashed. You went to find Huntress Wizard, she could be hard to find due to her job, but you always managed. Only…this time you couldn’t help but wish you never found her. She was sitting close to a guy with a white bear hat and blue clothes. Of course you recognized him as the hero of Ooo, Finn.

Huntress Wizard also was more affectionate…in her own way. She’d give you gifts to help you (not an elk heart thankfully). You weren’t sure how to feel at first. Were they just being nice? No, because Huntress Wizard always said what she meant. Still…you weren’t exactly sure what their intentions were. 

❥So one day, you finally get the courage to ask. You all were having a picnic and Finn had offered you some of his food. All your emotions seemed to bubble up when you finally asked “What am I to you two?”

“What do you mean?” Huntress Wizard asked as Finn furrowed his eyebrows. 

“I-you…the way you're treating me…it's almost like…” It was hard for you to finish the sentence.

“We all care about each other a bunch,” Finn shrugged.

“Yeah,” Huntress Wizard nodded. “There doesn’t really need to be a label.”

three. the elevator scene with Piers and Jake arguing. it always makes me laugh, i love that they piss each other off :'D absolute fic fodder too lol. don't have actual pictures of it because it's during gameplay and not a cutscene but it never fails to make me smile so it deserves a spot on the list!

four. okay every single time he calls Chris on his bullshit tbh. I love both that he has the guts to do it and that their dynamic allows it. a honorable mention to when he yells at Chris for pulling "a kamikaze stunt like that". and the second fight after Marco dies. Piers respects Chris so much, which is evident, but he also has such a strong sense of what is right that he's willing to argue and not back down an inch. and I respect that.

(and whoever was the one that put Chris back on the field and in charge needs a swift kick in the balls because wow. but that's not a rant for now :'D)

five. and this breaks my heart but the moment he decides he's not getting into that escape pod. you can see the pain, both physical and emotional, on his face and in his posture, and I think it's such a telling moment of how he's a way better person than I would be lmao. I still wish they hadn't killed him, that Chris had kicked his ass into the pod, but I do love that small moment where he makes his choice.

The Limit Review

Finn and Jake go on a rescue mission to save the hot dog knights. The hot dog knights are severely mentally disabled. They make the Banana Guards look competent. I appreciate the episode immediately giving an explanation for why they don’t just stretch over the labyrinth, no cheating! It’s debatable whether Jake using his stretching to not get lost still counts as cheating though. I love how the hot dog knights got lost just inside the entrance. Did Hot Dog Princess send them to their deaths on purpose?

The maze is a super cool location. I don’t think it quite counts as a dungeon episode, but it still retains a lot of video gamey elements. Some of the mini puzzles feel right out of Zelda. It’s cool seeing all the unique ways Jake’s powers allow them to bypass all the obstacles.

This episode shows how far Jake’s powers can really go. Jake’s abilities have a lot of untapped potential. We usually don’t get to see Jake’s stretching be used so efficiently due to his laziness and desire to have some conflict in his life. So it’s fun getting to see so many creative uses of his mutation. On the other hand, it's painful to watch Jake overexert himself. Jake’s thinned out body and discoloration is not a pretty sight. As powerful as Jake is, he does have a limit. While Warren Ampersand can stretch enough to make a planet, Jake only has half his DNA.

Unlike Finn’s total disregard for Jake’s well being and abuse of his powers in the upcoming “Jake Suit”, Finn is rightfully concerned about how far Jake is pushing himself. The hot dog knights cheer Jake on, which can be forgiven due to their established stupidity. It’s interesting how susceptible Jake is to peer pressure. 

Finn really shouldn’t be poking Jake’s nerp. And for all we know that could be Jake’s stretched out asshole. Jake isn’t killed from the poison of the scorpion, which tracks with “Jake vs Me-Mow” revealing that Jake’s stretching can overcome deadly poison.

We finally see the true limit of Jake’s power as he stretches until he starts dying (Jake death foreshadowing). It was heartbreaking seeing Finn join in the chants for Jake to keep going. It’s a great moment for Finn, as he knows they need to get to the wishes so he can save Jake. The funniest part of the episode are the dumb wishes the hot dog knights make and the ways they all die. Finn and Jake failed their original mission in rescuing them, all of them really ended up dead by this episode’s end!

While you can excuse it with Jake’s exhaustion and being on the verge of death, Jake wishes for a sandwich for the first of many times. I’m not sure if Finn would really wish for the Ancient Psychic Tandem War Elephant over saving Jake, but he listens to his brother. Luckily, it all works out. APTWE getting a wish is a cool solution. The war elephant also has a super rad design. I do wonder if Aquandrius’s wish magic shares any basis with Prismo and Evergreen’s magic.

Adventure Time: Marceline’s vampirism as a metaphor for sexual assault

Spoilers: Adventure Time “Stakes” miniseries (season 7, episodes 6-13)

Okay, I wanna talk about Stakes. For those who don’t know, it’s an 8-episode miniseries in the middle of season 7 that focuses on Marceline. I’m not going to go super deep into the plot details, but the gist is this: Marceline decides she doesn’t want to be a vampire anymore, so Princess Bubblegum cures her and in doing so releases all of the vampires she killed and got her powers from. She then has to kill them each one-by-one with the help of Finn, Jake, PB, and Peppermint Butler. At the end, she faces the Vampire King, the one who originally turned her into a vampire, and he turns her back into a vampire.

As someone who has experienced sexual assault, this series felt like it had such clear parallels to it. Even if it’s not explicitly what the writers intended, it resonated so strongly with me and I wanted to articulate those feelings.

How Marceline became a vampire

The clearest, most direct mirror of sexual assault is how Marceline gets turned into a vampire. In episode 8 (”Vamps About”), we see her fighting the Vampire King; she’s been fighting vampires for a long time, and killing him would finally wipe them out. It seems to be an evenly matched fight until suddenly, the tone shifts; he whispers “You know, Marceline, there's still another way...Another way to save my people.” The reality of what is about to happen sets in - he lunges towards her and bites her. He is physically on top of her, restraining her, as he bites into her neck and pushes himself into the stake she planned to use to kill him. She’s screaming “no,” only making him push farther. Finally, he’s gone: the stake worked, it killed him, but it’s too late. She’s left on the floor, sobbing.

For those who have experienced assault, this is a raw, violent, and violating scene. It immediately brought up memories of my own experiences and brought me to tears. The VK physically asserts control over her; he is violating her space and her boundaries and is clearly violating her physically. He’s pushing down on her so hard that the stake she’s holding eventually kills him, but not before he irrevocably hurts her. And at the end of it, he has changed the course of her life forever: she is now a vampire.

This is a pivotal moment in her life that she cannot go back on. This is clearly a traumatic experience for her and it was inflicted upon her by someone in a violent and cruel way. This is now her trauma to carry.

Marceline’s view on vampirism

At the start of episode 6 (”Marceline the Vampire Queen”), Marceline explains that “some bad things happened to me when I was little. When I became a vampire, I was just a messed-up kid. Now it's 1,000 years later, and I'm still messed up.” As someone with PTSD, this felt like it was lifted from my own thoughts. Trauma does this to you - it freezes you in the moment when the trauma happened. Her being a vampire is a clear physical manifestation of this, but so are her thoughts. She’s been living with this trauma her whole life, unable to escape it because it won’t let her.

For many with PTSD, it feels like that trauma happened yesterday, and I think that’s what Marceline is getting at. This one single moment froze her, physically and mentally, and she wants to be done with it: she says “I don't want to spend eternity like this, with this emptiness.” She wants to heal.

Marceline’s attempt to cure her vampirism

She’s decided she’s ready to heal, so she consults Princess Bubblegum. She goes into a machine that removes all the vampire effluvium (aka vampire juice). It feels too easy almost, right? Unfortunately, that is the case - doing so releases all of the vampires she killed, the Vampire King among them.

Honestly? I can’t blame her for trying. I’ve personally had the thought more times than I could count that I wish I could wake up and be cured, that I could just forget this trauma or make it so it never happened to me. She did what so many people wish they could do and removed the evil bad thing that happened to her so she could finally be healed. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works, and it just brought up new wounds and will bring her back to facing her assaulter.

Marceline’s fights against the vampires

After they were freed, Marceline now has to fight each of these vampires one by one again. While I’m not going to get into the larger significance of each of them (although there are a number of great analyses on their mirrors in tarot and what each represents to Marcy), the order and way each gets tackled is important.

Everyone is out in the woods looking for these vampires, ready to use their new tools as a team. Marceline tells them all to go back to the cabin; she wants to do this alone. After finding their encampment, she easily defeats the Fool by herself, just like she did in the past. However, she is suddenly faced with the VK, her assaulter. Rather than fight, he asks to be friends, claiming he has changed as so many horrible people do. And deep down, Marceline knows this isn’t true: she tells him “it doesn't matter how you pretend to change. You've done enough already to get staked a thousand times over. You're monsters. You'll always be.” To her, he will always be the one who did this to her, and the fact that he wants to be friends is disrespectful and insulting. He just wants to come back and act like it doesn’t matter? Fuck. you.

However, her time with the VK is short, and it’s clear this won’t be their final fight. He informs her that one of the others is moving towards the Ice Kingdom, towards Simon.

She turns her attention to the Empress because she poses the most immediate threat to Simon. She tries to fight her alone but nearly fails until PB show up to help. For those with trauma, this signifies a common desire to heal it alone. The thought process of “I don’t want to burden anyone, I don’t want to make them afraid or view me differently. It’s my trauma, I can handle it alone, I’m strong enough to do this.” But, as we quickly come to see, that’s just not possible. She has to let someone in to help her, and it does help: they’re able to defeat the Empress, together.

As a team they tackle the other vamps until Marceline gets injured. PB takes her back to the Candy Kingdom and Finn and Jake are entrusted with the second-to-last vampire. Marceline has to let go of her control to step back and heal herself, which is an incredible step forward. She entrusts others to help carry this burden, at least for a moment, which is something we haven’t seen yet. But we know this can’t be the end: the Vampire King is still out there.

Marceline vs the Vampire King

Finally, after defeating all the other vampires, Marceline is left to fight the VK. Yet, he doesn’t want to fight - he wants his powers removed too. He throws an epic tantrum that is incredibly disturbing: here is this violent man splashing around acting like a child. I’m not going to delve into the meaning of this here (but this post does an amazing job covering it, imo), but the summary is that he gets his powers removed and we are left with him turning into a docile lion and a bucket of black vampire goo. The bucket gets spilled, releasing a dark lamb-shaped cloud of pure evil. Now, we see the true final enemy.

Surviving

The gang gets ready to fight the evil cloud, but Marceline is noticeably upset. When asked what’s wrong, she responds, “Me. I'm wrong. This—all of this—this is all my fault. Even just fighting the vampires in the first place screwed everything up. Sure screwed me up, anyway. And, geez Louise, trying to fix it—trying to fix me... Just made things a thousand times worse. So why even try, you know? What's the point?” She’s resigning - she has done everything she can to try and make this trauma go away, and all it did was bring her back face to face with her assaulter. Not only that, but now the people she loves most are tangled up in it. So, she won’t fight.

That doesn’t deter everyone else, and as a united front from all kingdoms they launch an attack on this cloud. It’s an incredibly powerful moment of unity, but it doesn’t change Marceline’s mind. Instead, she sits on the rubble of PB’s cabin and sings, when suddenly the Ice King/Simon shows up. He says he won’t be fighting either, and tells her “You and me—we're survivors, right? Like cockroaches or rats. Sure, you could fight and try to save the day, but what if you lose? Then what?"

For those with trauma, this is a powerful sentiment. The idea of “your trauma made you stronger,” is bullshit. I made me stronger; I survived it. Marceline has lived with this trauma for so long, and now, she’s tired of fighting it. I don’t blame her. Yet, the most powerful act she could do is what she’s already done: she survived.

Finally, Marceline changes her mind and goes to fight. After all, everyone else’s efforts have been futile; perhaps she is truly their last hope. Or, perhaps she realizes that she has to be the one to face this. Other people can help in the journey of healing, but ultimately, it is up to her. Finally, she gets to be in control of it.

She charges into the cloud and a mouth opens, right over her heart, and starts consuming the cloud from the inside. She’s winning - she’s defeating it. Right before the last of it is gone, fangs appear and bite her neck.

Everything Stays

So, where are we left? Marceline at home, a vampire once again. Her friends are there with her and have tried to make her space as comfortable as possible. Finn struggles to say what many people close to those with trauma can’t articulate either: he asks, “Are you, uh... Do you feel bad? I don't want to say, like, ‘I'm sorry about who you are’ or anything if you're feeling okay, but I don't know how bad news all of this is... Right?” Marceline basically hasn’t changed in a physical sense since she’s a vampire once again, and it’s difficult to clearly express how that feels. Clearly she’s been brought back and relived her trauma, and Finn senses this, but it’s not clear where she stands on it. She says it’s okay, that she’s gained “more empathy or something” and is “more grown-up.” Her friends say goodbye, and she’s left alone again. She sings, for the second time in the miniseries, “Everything Stays.”

There is no world where her trauma didn’t happen to her. There is no world where she will wake up one day and forget what has happened to her.

But that doesn’t mean she can’t heal. Every day, she survives; every day, she grows; every day, she heals a little bit more than the last.

She faced her trauma, and in her own way, she won. She saw him, the Vampire King, again. She helped her friends, and she allowed her friends to help her.

In little ways

This is a part of her. This is a part of her story. It doesn’t make her weak, it doesn’t make her bad, it just is. Even though she’s a vampire once again, she is changed.

When everything stays

I think I need to talk about Together Again and theories and emotions so here we go

First of all, this episode left me with a very intense feeling I can't quite grasp, but I'll try. One sensation is longing. I'm an athiest, and I don't believe in reincarnation, but for the first time in my life something made me deeply wish I could, because I wish this was what we got in the afterlife. It's perfect.

Second sensation is utter relief. I was sure all 40 minutes that these two would get separated. I thought it was a just ending. I would have let them get away with it. But I was SO glad they didn't. For once I get a happy "ending", the prospect of two people whose souls are so interconnected they won't separate even in different lives. And they deserve it.

So analysis: what really peaked my interest was the structure of this afterlife. I loved it, of course, and it made me think a lot. Adventure Time's universe is one where magic reigns supreme and there is no universal idea of a God(s) as far as I remember. In death, the concept of reincarnation is accepted and known. What I have noticed in the death world was the absence of the concepts of "hell/purgatory/paradise" or anything like that, and the presence instead of the 50 worlds of death.

My theory on this afterlife is that souls aren't judged based on actions in life but rather on their state and peace of mind. The souls in the 50th world weren't necessarly the most good, but they seemed to be the most at peace with their life and death (which I think is really fitting for Jake!). You could also argue that peace of mind and your goodness as a person are two things very much connected.

This explains why he told Finn "you'll be ready for the 50th in no time" and their parents' remarks. Also: their family was in the 37th world which also seemed to be pretty peaceful. In fact, their family seemed very happy to be there. Moreover, the souls in the first death world - the ones swimming in that weird goo - seemed to be agitated.

I also really, really loved the representation of Life. She was beautiful, and I loved her symbolism, building new bodies with clay and literally leaving behind her a trail of life. This brings me to the questions about reincarnation: which souls get reincarnated? The episode seemed to imply that some souls are at peace and remain in the death world, like the guys' parents, and Finn brings Jake down from the 50th because he seemed to understand that those souls don't feel the need to go back to the world. Does every sould choose for itself? Do Life and Death choose who gets reincarnated? Does everyone get reincarnated, eventually?

Now I want to talk about Finn! What a character. I love him immensely and always have and this episode reminded me of that, especially while showing his "purest" form, the earliest, the "good old days." Finn as an old man seems intelligent, very acute, and extremely determined in finding Jake. (Note: kudos to the writing for putting emphasis in the concept that they're not simply "best friends", they're brothers, family. It was a nice touch and very appropriate.) Finn just wants to come back to the person he loves the most, and cries so much because of this. I have seen this boy so many times on the screen of my tv, this hit a deep chord within me, and I love him so much. Anyway, I already had thought - like many - that his tattoo in Obsidian was because Jake died, and it turned out to be right, but this implies that Finn has lived MANY years without Jake. How old was he in Obsidian - 40? 50, max? Considering how old he looked at the time of his death, we can safely assume that at best he spent 30-40 years without Jake, and that just hurts much more when you think about what he says at the end. He did have reasons to live, but deep down he's always wanted to come back to Jake.

Speaking of Jake: kudos to his character too. When he decides to come back to earth with Finn, his reason is "i'm coming back for fun!" I feel that encapsulates his personality so, so well. Overall I loved how faithful these two were to their 2010 selves. Note: I do wish a bit we got to know how and when they both died, but it's ok to fill in the gaps.

Overall, as the classic gal who's nearly 20 and hence grew up with this cartoon, I have so many soft feelings for this episode. I have loved seeing the references to episodes and characters I have seen on repeat, so many times. This felt dedicated to that first version of AT, so full of wonder and so small and happy, and the ending brought me so much peace. Plus: credits to my sister who made me realize the two characters we see in the last episode are, in fact, Finn and Jake reincarnated and the series ending REALLY hits different after this.

Well. Seeing these two not being separated is so peaceful to me. For once, for a bit, I can believe that something has no end, even if it's fictional. I felt something hit me in my chest when I saw the final title card because I could find comfort in the knowledge that this part of my childhood ended with two intertwined souls forever finding themselves again. I'm so, so happy about that.

the first side most people see of jack is the side he wants you to see. a total asshole. it’s not an exaggeration - he’s pretty much infamous for flirting with everyone, dating anyone and as a serial cheater. he’ll actively try to worm his way into your life, and then just when you start to care, he does something to hurt you. he’s strangely persistent, probably helping him to push people even further, until they snap. there is nothing which satisfies him more than managing to wind people up to the extreme, get them to the point where they give up. adopted parents, friends, nobody is immune to this side - he even tries it on the people he genuinely cares about, as if just to see if he’ll still be able to push them away.

the second side, which most people don’t see, is that at heart jack is a kid. he’s the type of person to ask if owls have ears at 3am, or get some childlike joy out of dumb jokes. of course, this is the side nobody but a very small number of people see. and even if you do see it, it never lasts long. he keeps his true personality under wraps even amongst those he does like, and it only slips out if he’s extremely comfortable with you. otherwise, he’ll go straight back to being a sarcastic, flirty piece of shit.

jack and his older half brother finn were born in sheffield, united kingdom, to a single mother. a drug addict, she was notorious among social workers for neglecting her children and as a result jack shuffled between foster homes and his mother’s home during his first ten years of life, with finn, less than four years older than him, being his primary carer even when he was back with his birth family. this cycle finally ended when jack was ten and he was permanently removed from his mother’s care, and placed in the first of a series of foster homes which didn’t last particularly long.

the thing was, jack’s remarkably good at pushing people away when he wants to, and as he got older his talents only increased. running away, wreaking havoc, insulting anyone who tried to get close and anything else he could possibly think of meant that for three years he lasted no longer than eight months in any one place. in fact, he frequently took himself back to live with his birth family until social services came to drag him out again. this lifestyle continued until he was fostered by his now adopted parents, claire and george, at thirteen.

much to jack’s dismay, no matter of hell raising would push these newest set of parents away. in fact, they seemed absolutely set on raising him as Their Son, even as his attempts to get them off his back got more and more extravagant. they removed him from his previous school, transferred him to a fancy private school, put him in therapy and tried their best to help him get through all of the issues developed through his slightly fucked up childhood.

the thing was, jack loves his mother. he still refuses to see her as being in the wrong, no matter what people tell him or what he himself recalls, in his mind he has one mother and that’s his birth mother. so he did not take kindly to attempts by his foster parents to become his “new” family, because in jack’s mind? he already had a family. and even though they were actively encouraging him to continue contact with his brother, he couldn’t help but see them as trying to replace his birth family.

jack’s fifteenth year pretty much became the year when all of these issues finally came to a head. he was adopted legally by his foster parents, who had now been fostering him for two years - which should have been a happy occasion, but for jack represented the final loss, the final betrayal to his birth mother and brother. then shortly after his fifteenth birthday his brother went to prison at eighteen for grievous bodily harm, having glassed another boy after an argument.

of course, it would later be revealed that in actuality the assault had been committed by jack. and that finn was simply covering for him. (they looked alike enough that questions were not raised, it had happened so fast.) but in the eyes of jack’s adopted parents, finn was now a dangerous offender and jack had to be protected from him. so he was then isolated from his brother, his mother had relapsed and his continuous guilt over being adopted played on his mind, culminating in a suicide attempt in march 2017. 

of course, he wasn’t successful, but this was the final straw in the minds of his adopted parents. they felt jack needed a fresh start, away from the people who had defined his life prior to that point. so by his sixteenth birthday, jack had been moved to the united states to be near the family of his adopted mother, and subsequently enrolled in luxor academy. 

where he continued to be a menace :))

although it did appear, for some time, that jack was showing signs of improvement. sure, he was still wreaking havoc at luxor. but at home, he had calmed, even showing signs of affection to his adopted family. until his mother overdosed suddenly and died when jack was eighteen and things started to immediately go straight downhill again.

he can’t help but blame himself, for allowing himself to be moved. for the move being his fault, if he’s being honest. and if the honesty continues, jack’s got a whole lot of other stuff to blame on himself. (see: ruining his brother’s life.) so now he’s just taking shit out on everyone to try and make them a fraction as miserable as him.

Boomlords weird adventure

Chapter 12 A very cold day(warning some of the chapters and concepts might be a bit dark)

Rainbow Dash was still playing with her new blades while Finn reached into his backpack and started wrapping pieces of discarded felt together to make her a makeshift sheath. With everyone settled in on Jake Twilight began to notice before anyone else the air is getting colder as the Green landscape started to disappear."it's getting kind of chilly out here."Twilight complained leaning into Finn and Boomlord who had both already put on comfortable cold clothes. Finn was wearing his classic tan sweater which he had pulled out around the same time the temperature started dropping and boom already was wearing a jacket however he had pulled two sets of gloves out of the satchel handing one over to Twilight."here I got you."Twilight quickly took the glove and put them on rubbing her shoulders.Boom noticed she was still pretty cold and not wanting her to suffer he started to unzip his jacket.Finn eyes widen as he saw Boom do this as he had never actually seen boom take his jacket off for someone. Truth is Boom didn't usually take it off regardless of temperature."here twi try to stay warm."placed the jacket over her which she quickly accepted putting it on. Gave her a nice view of his actual body. He was still on the skinnier side but with notable muscle and wore a dark black T-shirt with a skull on it."won't you get cold."she asked looking slightly concerned."don't worry about me I don't... I don't get affected by weather that much anymore one of the few benefits of my abilities."she gave a shy smile to him that would make Fluttershy proud. Boom then looked over to Dash with Twi focusing on keeping warm. Dash looks perfectly fine despite wearing a sleeveless top and jean shorts. Guess she's spent plenty of time in high altitudes so he doubt the cold would bother her much."you two should get a room."dash seem to be in a teasing mood which Finn proceeded to chuckle at as booms, and Twilights faces begin to redden.

2 the tall cone like ice mountains towered the landscape however Jake paid little attention to them as he could just walk right over them but upon reaching the tallest mountain he stopped getting down low before shrinking back to his smaller size."okay passengers this is where the jake rides stop." Everyone landed in the snow with the exception of rainbow Dash who was flying just above them."okay so we need to go in with a plan."fin spoke to the group."ever since the ice King turned back into Simon a lot of the snow golems who were here as security have gone banaynays so we're in for a fight when we head in."Twilight looked at him her brow narrowing in confusion."are snow golems dangerous."jake looked up at her."normally not but these guys have been weirdly aggressive like Rabid killer slushies."Twilight seem to understand as she nodded."so how do we subdue them?"the three boys looked at each other as they were unsure of how to tell her."you can't really subdue a crazed golem best you can do is destroy them."both the girls were taking abit back by this."well they're not alive right."it was clear that Twilight was getting nervous as she asked this."Golems are constructs given life so yes but you have to understand out here and in many worlds friendship isn't always going to be the answer. I know it might be hard for you and I'm not asking you to hurt anyone I can take care of that and I can also promise no one will be harmed who doesn't deserve it."there was a sudden look on twilights face as she looked into the blank expression boom was giving off clearly not trying to show emotion. Boom reached into his bag and pulled out what appeared to be a small curved weapon. Of course what he had actually pulled out was a desert eagle hand cannon. It's a type of gun for anyone who doesn't know."if it really bothers you, you can stay here but these golems need to be put down especially if they have gone rabid."Twilight looked away holding the jacket he lent her tightly."I think I'll wait outside if this is gonna be as violent as I think you're implying."she looked away from them but then snapped her gaze back at him seeing the brightness in his right gold eye it wasn't a look of anger or intent to harm it was a look of sympathy."that might be for the best Jake you stay with her me and Finn can handle these guys on our own rainbow you're free to come or go if you wish."rainbow dash pulled out her daggers from their sheathes not saying a word. Boom turned to the the mountain knowing what he was going to have to do."let's get this over with."

3 Booms groups perspective) As the group approached the entrance of the ice King's old home burst of cold air erupted from a large crack at the base of the mountain. Several deep growls could be heard from within and the chittering of ice dinging against other ice likely snow golems. Boom held his firearm tight because he stared into the dark blue abyss. It wasn't the first Time Boom had to kill something he had done it countless times before and countless different worlds but never before has he felt such a dread inside of him. It wasn't for the creatures inside in fact he was likely doing them a favor putting them out of their misery since without ice Kings magic whatever he was using to keep them stable is likely long gone. It was for the look that's Twilight had given him. Truth of the matter was he had rathered Twilight not see him as a monster he just hoped that this wouldn't ruin anything between the two of them.'she didn't seem too badly faced All things considered maybe we're still good as long as she doesn't have to witness me do it.' He found himself lost in his thoughts as the three of them descended into the caverns beneath the mountain. They walked for a while but it didn't take to long to reach the lower Chambers All things considered. It was then that they spotted the creatures within. At the top of the chamber two giant snow centipedes loomed over them they're legs were made of solid ice along with their pincers and several holes filled with coal made up their eyes. However they were clearly not normal snow creatures they're clear white snow bodies had darken to a sickly Gray and from between their pincers water dripped out like the foam from a rabbit animal. Finn pulled out a sword the one he had gotten from rattleballs as he prepared himself to defend Rambo dash on the other hand decided to take a more aggressive approach heading straight up at one of the centipedes slashing it on its side with her blades. The creature tried to retaliate by trying to contort and bend its body in order to bite her and it would have if not for the incredible speed of rainbow Dash who quickly dive bombed down to the ground in order to avoid the hit."don't get too aggressive Dash the centipedes are highly unpredictable in this state! There's no telling how their powers have mutated!"rainbow Dash simply rolled her eyes clearly not taking the Giant snowbug seriously. However as as if on cue the second snow centipede sent a barrage of icicles from its liquid maw at rainbow Dash barely found the time to move. Several of the icicles slice and cut up her sides as a bit of red blood dripped from her lower waist and shoulders. However was lucky enough to avoid taking any serious injuries by using her wings to propel her back into a wall. The injured centipede released from the ceiling falling down to the ground right over boom while the second one jump towards Finn. This time however it wasn't facing a newbie as Finn jumped right back at it and right over the icy Jaws onto its head. Finn then proceeded to strike his sword blue right into its head effortlessly shoving the sword through it and causing it to completely collapse into piles of snow as it's ice limbs rolled away. The injured centipede stared down boom roaring in his face before trying it clam its jaws on him. Boom was faster over ducking effortlessly underneath it right into its underbelly. Once he was directly under it he pointed the firearm up and pulled the trigger.*BANG*the middle section of the creature exploded leaving its bottom half in shambles and piles of snow. He then turned to the front of the creature now on its side unable to move. There were whimpers from the poor creature still trying its best to bite that boom."sorry about this."He said in a sorrowful tone. He razed his gun up to the creature's head closed his eyes and all that could be heard throughout the mountain and the kingdom around it was the sound of the firearm going off. Outside Twilight feel a shutter go down her spine as we heard the noise.

Adventure Time Reviewed: Season 1 part 1

As promised, I’m going through the Adventure Time series. I’m going to write brief reviews for each of the eps as I watch them, in groups. 

Slumber Party Panic to Prisoners of Love

S1E01: Slumber Party Panic

This made an outstanding choice for a first episode, even if it wasn’t the intended premiere, because SPP shows you a brief package of what themes the show would keep through its run, rather than just a brief adventure.  It’s really funny that the first appearance of Princess Bubblegum in the series is her raising the dead, it being a big mistake, and her lying to the candy people to protect them and describing them as ignorant, then making a 12 year old keep a royal promise.  This ep shows Finn’s early season character - an amped up, anxious kid who wants to keep everyone happy but sometimes can’t. And it has Jake trying to pry the information from him, because from Jake’s perspective it is out of character for Finn to keep secrets, and he is also messed up after finding Dead Mr Creampuff’s sock with Finn. (Mr Creampuff and Manfried are both in this ep, and they will continue to be the funniest retcons of all time to me)    What was absolutely retconned after this ep was the brokenness of the Gumball Guardians. It’s hilarious that Bubblegum programmed them to go apeshit if someone breaks a promise to her. If only they could have frozen time during the final battle against GOLB. I liked the part in ETDBIDK where you have to answer a maths question while dodging their attacks, even if it went on a bit too long.   The ep also subverts its message. Bubblegum asks Finn if he learned about the consequences of breaking promises, but Finn says that if he breaks promises he can go on AWESOME ADVENTURES and REVERSE DEATH ITSELF, and PB goes whatever, youre too cute to yell at.  

The music in SPP is surreal. Seriously, listen to this ep. The tension it creates when Finn is told to make a royal promise because the zombies will explode, and how the music so naturally swings with the mood of the ep. Excellent score!

As Jake said,“This is messed up, but cute!”  

S1E02: Trouble in Lumpy Space

This is the introduction to LSP and to Lumpy Space. Lumpy space is a beautiful if rather barren environment. I do think more could have been done with it in AT, because there are not many episodes that take place in space.  One design choice I found SUPER COOL in this ep is the sun has a green halo around it. I can’t actually find the sun again, I even looked on the wiki but there are no images, so it must have appeared for a brief instance. But it looked great!  

LSP as a character was always incredibly selfish, but she also has this vibe of being a teenager who dwells far too much on teenager feelings. She NEVER takes anything seriously, unless it’s teen drama. And you can see that in full effect here.  I love LSP. I love how much of an asshole she is, yet she has this sort of charm, because she’s so spiteful but in the teenage idiot kind of way rather than in a genuinely malicious way. It’s like she doesn’t understand right and wrong and is driven by pure instinct. And she’s voiced by Pen Ward! His LSP voice is the best. 

I love Finn and Jake getting lumpified. There is some great voice acting on behalf of Jeremy Shada to pull this off. 

Favourite joke: When Jake talks about how he might get lumpified, and if it happens Finn says he’ll bury him next to the treehouse, but Jake is alarmed and says he just wanted to be accepted, what did Finn think he was going to say? LMAO  

Other good one: “We were drawn back by your directionless fury. Here! PCHOO! Get your girl back!” “Yeah there’s no girl.”  

Finn in this ep is having some issues communicating. He ends up having an outburst at LSP, even though it wasn’t entirely her fault that the smooth posers took away the orb, it was theirs too. Finn was having a bad day. 

I wish Jellybeans Have Power started with PB and SP bouncing on marshmallows like in this episode rather than having tea in her room. That would’ve been a nice callback. 

Anyway, Trouble in Lumpy Space is great. These two eps are really good introductions to the series. 

S1E03: Prisoners of Love

I love the joke with the snow golem’s cat head. There is an immediate callback to the Pilot, with Finn and Jake having fun in the snow. I always liked how fun these scenes looked, they are very very rare later in the series.  There’s even a homage to penguin surfing, but the penguins are surfing on Jake this time.  Finn and Jake act like jerks to the Ice King for like no reason. “Do you know what Ice King means?” “A big nerd!” “Oh, holy cow!”  *fistbump*  

“There’s a big sleepy lava man in our front yard, and he is SO hot.” “Mmmhmm....” “Nonono I take it - I mean, not like SEXY hot--” “No, no you DO mean sexy hot!”  “NO! I mean---”  Oh Adventure Time. Gay jokes on episode 3, and these would continue throughout the show. But as soon as you imply two of your main girl characters are or were in love, suddenly the network hounds onto you like dogs :/ Rebecca Sugar herself said that it’s much more likely you’ll get gay content in if it’s presented as a joke, or Wrong somehow, like Jake and Ice King getting married later in the season. 

“Now now, I brought you a baby! And a PUPPY!” In his twisted way, Ice King thought the princesses would want to have Finn and Jake there. It’s also a good thing Finn and Jake got kidnapped because otherwise they wouldn’t have discovered Ice King locked up a bunch of princesses. 

Ice King himself is a fun character already. He’s not shown as doing outright evil stuff to Finn and Jake for the sake of it. He seems heavily misguided, and idiotic, trying in his weird way to make friends. Then again.... “IceKing - let the girls go! They don’t want to be here.” “Of course they do! I’d have killed them already if they didn’t want to be here! Right ladies?” Ice King I’m increasingly certain the only reason you haven’t been dissected on Bubblegum’s lab table is because of your connection to Marceline, but that is some late series lore. As for the early seasons, wtf dude!  

The flute song Finn plays in this ep is very similar to the one he plays in Lemonhope part 2. The Lemonhope version is more complete. “You broke it when we tried picking the lock to that sad ogre’s heart!” Oh my god that is such an AT line, you can imagine an entire emotional adventure based on that. 

Ice King has a drawing of Bubblegum on his keyboard... 

I love how the princesses are clearly quite traumatized by this affair, having been held for weeks, but the most Ice King did was ask them about their favourite sports, while threatening to kill them if they didnt play the keyboard..... it’s like a parody of a twisted serial killer. AT’s dark humor is my favourite.  

Finn is a hot headed kid. He knows that the Ice King needs some kind of help but doesn’t know where to start. He knows he’s probably too young to understand. But Jake hasn’t got the patience to help.

Time adventure || personal analysis :3

Disclaimer: there are probably some spelling mistakes or word errors because I was just writing whatever was on my mind :3 enjoy!

Where to start. Well, There is a song that I love deeply, it circles around my head almost daily. It’s from my favorite show, Adventure Time. A show that I’ve had the privilege of growing up with. This song is called “Time Adventure”. It’s the main song in the final episode of the series, it is heartwarming, catchy, and emotional if you will, bringing the show together as it has its own timeline, featuring a mushroom war, and the total wipe out of a normal human species. The song is sung by BMO, a small robot that lives with the characters Finn and Jake. Although his physical form may not be so mighty looking, having no weapons or muscle, this small lovable robot serves a strong mental impact, always finds the good in things, facing death fearlessly. He was created by an old man to accompany his child which he didn’t end up having, so BMO was released to find a family of his own facing many ups and downs, experiencing life as it is, and learning the meaning of life. A part of him will always be kept inside my heart, because he reminds me that everything will be okay at the end of the day, no matter how big or small the challenges have been.

The song “time adventure” was sung by BMO to comfort Jake the stretchy dog, who had shrunk down, being caressed in the arms of BMO. Jake has always been Physically strong, and with his best friend/brother Finn, he has always been unstoppable. However, there is a time where his life will eventually come to an end, and in this moment of distress, the two starring death right in its face as a monster was about to end their lives, which spoiler, did not happen, BMO sang this song in order to comfort the frightened Jake, who usually is the one protecting him.

I’ll start off by introducing the first lyric of the song which is, “time is an illusion that helps things make sense”, this lyrics speaks to me on many levels because it shows that time is something man kind made up. Who is to say that time is real? We invented it, but in reality, evolution guided us to wake up when it’s bright outside, and go to sleep once it’s dark out. It’s a never ending cycle, and 24 hours is our way of knowing when the sun rises and sets on our side of the world. Time is our creation. It allows us humans to know when and where to be, and it helps us function in an organized manner, hence, it is an “illusion that helps things make sense”. Before our time on earth, this place that we call our home has been orbiting around the sun longer than we could ever imagine. This planet is older than time, and we we just happen to be apart of its journey.

After the first sentence, the song goes “we are always living in the present tense”. I absolutely love how this song has explained itself. This lyrics shows that even though our creation of time may not be real, we still live inside of it. Time being what we depend on to explain our whole existence. Our age, our lifespan, our schedule, everything we do involves time, but not everything in time has involved us. Milliseconds, seconds, minutes, hours, past, present, future, everything, we have made up, and everything we have ever done revolves around this illusion of time, as we orbit around what we have called, the sun. This song not only make you think about the creation of time, but it makes you think of the creation of absolutely everything. Atoms, moons, solar systems, etc… We have named everything we could possibly name in order for it to make sense to us, and same goes for time. The present, being where we claim to be right now, is now the past, and what I am about to say, is the future. For example, I wrote this in the past, but in what ever way this is being presented, it is in the future. Now when you think of it like that, it makes sense, but without time, we would not be able to comprehend this in the same way as we do with it.

The next part of the song that I would like to address, is “it seems unforgiving when a good thing ends”. This part of the song expresses that even though BMO and Jake’s time on earth was fun, it must come to an end at some point, and BMO explains this in the next line which is, “but you and I will always be back then”. Quite an emotive phrase indeed. It shows that, even though things are coming to an end, the things that they have experienced in the past, are still in the past, they still happened, and at least they had the chance to experience the things that happened. This time of despair does not countermand all the good times they have had. Just because in that moment of terror Jake was not as powerful as he usually is and it seemed as though their friends were in serious danger, it does not mean that they did not try, and that the life they lived was not worthwhile. Their bravery and triumph still happened. Love and happiness still happened. Everything good they have ever done, still happened. This moment of struggle does not define who they are, and as the world collapses around them, this loss does not signify defeat, for they have won more than they have lost. When the push comes to shove, they have done more good to the world than this misfortune will ever live to be. BMO comforts Jake by using the thought of the past, for the possibility of the future is not guaranteed, so the view of the present is blocked, focusing only on the joyful old memories.

The bridge of the song is impactful, with the first line being “if there was some amazing force outside of time to take us back to where we were”. This line sparks a wish that many of have, where we wish to go back in time to experience the laughter and joy we had in the past again. It shows that even though time is an illusion, we still do not have complete control over it. The feeling of wanting to experience happiness again is heavily desired, especially in moments where life is not as euphoric. BMO uses imagery but singing “hang each moment up like pictures on the wall inside a billion tiny frames so that we can see it all”. By singing this, BMO creates a mental image inside the heads of those who connect with the series. It shows that all the times you’ve had are now memories in you mind. I found this very insightful, because it’s seeing life in a new perspective. Seeing the past almost like Polaroids. Life forever changing, capturing every step, allowing you to step back and really look at all the good times you’ve had. Growing and blooming, in your final moments, you have experienced life as it is, and for BMO, it is clear that his journey through time is much bigger than the small picture of the present. He expresses that fear is only a barricading you from happiness. It’s your task to choose which side of that barrier you want to be on, and your mission to find out how to get there. BMO being the positive character he is, shows Jake that the positive moments are much more worthwhile.

The song ends beautifully with the line “you and I will always be best friends”, being another version of “back then”. I especially love this line because it shows that along their journey of life, they have made strong connections with other. Strengthening this bond with unforgettable moments, reminiscing with one another. As best friends, they know that they are not alone as the foundations of their home crumble around them. The depth of their friendship for one another is stronger than the fear of death, leading us back around to the reason why, being because of these memories with so much emotional meaning. Death is inevitable and learning to accept that is a skill. BMO is proven to be strong headed by accepting death, and as he sings, he finds out that singing is the way to kill the beast, defeating Glob and finally saving the day, protecting those who had once protected him.

As time goes on, BMO had found a way to continue making memories with his “best friends” by using his beliefs in a form of art, creating a key point in his own journey, alive. This song makes life surreal and comforting, for the message questions all forms of life, and makes the idea of death less terrifying. My perspective has changed ever sine listening to this song, and I am grateful for that. The idea of life being more important than death gives me something to live for. Creating impact and meeting amazing people. I have learnt that terrible situations do not define you, and the illusion of time will forever continue making sense of the world around us, reminding us of what is important and what makes us happy.

Fanfic Friday 3: Bmo Character spotlight

Woop! It’s Friday again and you know what that means!

Now with Distant Lands coming out in less than a week on June 15th- I think now’s a good time to look at what Bmo fics there are. As there’s probably going to be a whole lot of them in a few weeks. 

For character spotlights I’m going to start off with what I think is the best fanfic currently out there about this character, which will get a detailed review, and then I’ll recommend some other pieces of writing. 

With that imo the best Bmo fic currently out there is: Flowers for Bmo, King of Ooo by Princeofonesingledomain on Ao3

So first off this fic is about something I personally find really interesting: Ooo 1000 years later, the world Shermey and Beth inhabit. That part of the finale was absolutely heart wrenching and the perfect way to end a series about accepting change and letting things grow. Everything in Ooo ultimately stayed just as we left it, everything stayed but it still changed. 

This fic is three chapters long and opens on a strong, well written and enjoyable chapter about Shermey and Beth deciding to visit Bmo. The dialogue between these two is really good and distinctly Adventure Timely, especially in the way sadder aspects are handled. 

Also the jokes are really funny! Which is perfect for a duo at the start of their adventure- Shermey and Beth are at the same point of their story as early seasons Finn and Jake were. And the humor reflects that with jokes I can imagine being in a season 1 or 2 episode. 

Other little tidbits that tie nicely into the show are the little snippets we get of old Ooo - like Beth humming the food chain song as she looks for something to give Bmo, or the duo casually discussing Peppermint Butler who by the way HAS BECOME GUARDIAN OF A NIGHTOSPHERE PORTAL! There’s no boring exposition in the way we get this information, these things are just seamlessly placed in the narrative like references to old Ooo were in the episode Come Along With Me. So this fic feels like a good sequel to that episode from the get go and the second chapter only builds on this.

The second chapter focuses on Bmo and is much more melancholy, starting with Bmo sitting and staring at the clouds, thinking about how the way they change their shapes reminds them of someone? Jack? Jake? Or was it Phil? Which is a really nice example of character based description- the sort I love to see in a fanfic! 

This really draws you into Bmo’s centuries old mind. It’s peaceful, but still playful. Bmo has stayed the same, but also changed. 

This is also reflected in how superbly Bmo is written. Bmo is still charming and childish, they still mess around with their reflection friend football, but there’s an... age to Bmo now. A tiredness, a weariness and sense of loss that wasn’t there before. Which contrasts really well against Shermey and Beth who’s adventure is just beginning. 

In general this fic made me really emotional and is a really good dive into Bmo’s character, it also features a lovely song written by Marceline for Bmo that I can totally imagine being in the show and an absolute gut punch of an ending. 

I say ending in reference to the second chapter because that was originally when the fic was supposed to end, but the author graciously added an epilogue that brings together all the characters mentioned and has Bmo finally find his place in this new world, finally moving on from the past to be the friend to Shermey and Beth, a returned Bonnie and Marcy, a grown up Peppermint Butler and characters yet unmet that he was to Finn and Jake. 

Staying the same, yet changing. 

...You think the author’s done after writing the best Bmo fic I’ve ever read? Nope! Just as things couldn’t get any better, you find out this is part of a series and has not one, but TWO sequels! These are focused on other characters so I’m not going to review them, just list the summaries and encourage you to check them out:

Autumn Leaves -  Caught in a conflict between Sweet P. and a great returning evil, Shermy tumbles down a mountainside and meets someone who seems to know him, even though he's never seen her before. Could this be the Huntress Wizard BMO told him about?

A Grey Winter’s Bloom - How did Marceline get her wrinkles and grey hair? What happened to Simon? A night that starts as an attempted romantic evening for her and Bonnie ends up being more than Marceline ever bargained for. In BMO's house of many memories, Marceline finds Simon's glasses lying on a shelf. They remind her of a time that seems too long past to be real, but too personal to be far from her heart. Shermy, Beth and the others listen to her recount the first time she'd noticed Simon was growing old, and that there was nothing she could do to stop it.

With that another really good Bmo fic is Disk Check Error by Skyeel also on ao3.

-the super good writing of Bmo. Every line feels like it’s said by them. 

This fic is a homage to Bmo’s memory storage, which by now stores some of the addest, happiest, tensest and funniest moments of Ooo’s history. 

The first two memories we see are a cute Bubline fluff piece post “What Was Missing” which is Bmo at their cutest and most baby! The writing of them is in character and each piece of dialogue feels like it was taken from an actual show script. The bubbline in this is also adorable.

The second memory is equally cute- focusing on Bmo making a videogame for Finn as a birthday gift only for the Ice King to show up and for them to sort of.... collaborate? Either way it’s very sweet, Bmo is their usual childish self and the Ice King’s weird personality goes really well with theirs, meaning we get to see a sweet and playful side to Simon just as we do Bmo.

 Meanwhile, the beginning and end of each segment listing Bmo’s memory storage ties them all together. This seemingly related piece of data is revealed to be the size of another memory, which Bmo has had to rip out of their hard drive to make way for new memories. And the third memory- which is actually Bmo’s present 1000 years later deals with just this special data. 

Like in the first fic Bmo 1000 years later is slightly different, older than the Bmo we grew up with, something that this fic makes all the more poignant because we saw Bmo as they used to be right at the start. Bmo has two guests over and tells them a story. 

Now I’m not going to spoil the emotional core of this story but I am going to tell you what I really enjoyed about the final memory. 

It’s very rare for a fanfic to take full advantage of the written word as a medium and this one takes advantage of typographical features (fancy words for stuff in a text that’s visual e.g. font, punctuation etc) in a way that not only tells the story but is emotional. 

All in all, like the first fanfic this one links to the core theme of Adventure Time: that even if things change, from Simon and the Ice King to Marceline throughout the seasons to the land of Ooo itself, what truly matters about these things will always stay the same. Especially when that’s love. 

Some other lil Bmo fics I found enjoyable are:

A Real Boy- 7 very short 2-4 paragraph chapters detailing how Bmo wishes on an artefact Finn and Jake find to be a real boy, and ends up zapped into a parallel reality. 

This has some really cool moments as well as general Bmo cuteness- plus there’s some cannon x OC ship stuff that’s always nice to see. I love fan OCs and think they’re great fun if you can’t tell by my fankid horde. This has a cute ending too. It’s very short and can easily be finished in 10 minutes. 

Bmo’s Greatest Adventure - this one’s a lot longer and I haven’t fully finished it, though from what I’ve read so far it’s pretty nostalgic for early seasons Adventure Time as well as early 2010s Fanfiction. The characters are in character, Bmo is their plucky self and other than that this fic is what it says on the tin so here’s the author summary:

In the land of Ooo, before the Mushroom Wars, there was an ancient yellow computer chip held precious information about all of the secrets about rebuilding & maintain the society that was once e story was told that there will be a great computer mind to help translate and rebuild Ooo, but the chip was hidden away & So BMO's greatest adventure began.

The Treasure of two Robots - I’m a bit hesitant about reccommdending this as it’s written for the Bmo x NEPTR pairing and in it Bmo is referred to with she/her exclusively and just generally gendered as female. 

While Bmo is generally interpreted to be a genderfluid character, this comes off as a little erasing of all the times they’ve used he/him and seems like the writer is trying to avoid writing, y’know, gays. Though Bmo canonnically has no sex and is referred to with a variety of gendered forms throughout the show, including he, she, m’lady and others. None of which Bmo corrects or seems uncomfortable with/has preference for, so we can assume she/her is technically fine.

So as such I can’t fault people for writing Bmo to be leaning femininely in their fics if that’s how they see the character though it does come off as straightwashing of what should be an lgbt pairing - a male and a genderfluid person’s relationship isn’t straight. But like I said, this is just my suspicions based on the year this fic were written in. It could simply be author interpretation. There’s nothing in this fic to suggest Neptr doesn’t also love Bmo when they’re a boy, and that Bmo isn’t genderfluid. 

That said this is a very cute fic featuring human versions of Bmo and NEPTR that shows what NEPTR and Bmo get up to when Finn and Jake aren’t around, and Bmo’s playful nature contrasts well against NEPTR’s more reserved and meek personality so they end up working well together. Bmo encourages NEPTR to get stuck in and enjoy himself while NEPTR acts as a much needed voice of reason. It’s nice to read about Bmo having carefree fun after, y’know 

this. 

So that’s that! I may do another one about Bmo if Distant Lands gives us as many fics as I’m hoping it will... hopefully...

Jake had had a long day at work and was definitely ready to chill out. After having a shower and sitting in his room by himself for a while, he decided to go see if he could find anyone to hang out with. It was boring to be by himself and it would be a lot more fun to have some company. Finn was out, presumably at work, so he decided to go see if the girls were in. Jake grabbed the spare key they had for their apartment and headed across the hall. He let himself in, automatically heading for the lounge area. "Hey Berry, Lopez. Anyone wanna watch a movie?" He asked, picking up the tv remote as he dropped down onto the couch.

Santana was lounging in her bedroom when she heard the door open and close pretty quickly after. Relaxing a little when she heard Jake’s voice boom through the apartment, she got out of Instagram and locked her phone. Exiting her room, she walked into the living room and shook her head when she realized he was already on the couch. “Please, make yourself comfortable. Rachel isn’t home but I’m always down to watch a movie, pick something decent and I’ll get the wine. You’re cool with red, right?”

Jake looked up as Santana appeared, giving her a cheeky grin as she commented on him getting comfortable. He was actually quite pleased that it was Santana who was home and not Rachel. He had nothing against Rachel, she was nice (if a bit intense), but it was Santana who he really got along with. "Yeah red is fine." Jake nodded, turning on the TV and opening up the Netflix app. "What kinda thing are you in the mood for? Comedy? Thriller? Horror? Rom-com?" He asked, starting to flick through the options.

Pouring herself and Jake a glass of wine, she returned to the living room and handed her friend his drink. “Comedy, always.” Santana replied matter of factly as she took a seat beside him on the couch. Making herself comfortable, she crossed her legs and placed a cushion on her lap before taking a sip from her drink. “I’m surprised you’re here watching a movie with me on a Friday night. Don’t you have an innocent victim to wine and dine or something?”

"Thanks." Jake smiled as he took the glass from her, taking a sip of it before turning his attention back to his scrolling. He raised an eyebrow at her question, once again taking his eyes off the TV. "Innocent victim? You make it sound like I'm a serial killer." He laughed.  "But no, I didn't feel like going out tonight. I had a long day at work and it's just so much effort. Y'know? But what about you? You're not out on the prowl tonight?" He asked teasingly.

Smirking into her glass, she took another sip and shrugged her shoulders. “Work was crap today so I really don’t feel like dealing with people who are probably just going to be terrible in bed. My assistant didn’t order the right sample sizes for a photoshoot I’ve spent two months planning with the photographer and it was just a fucking disaster.” Turning her focus back on the TV, she gently hit Jake’s shoulder and pointed to the movie he had randomly landed on. “Let’s just watch a classic. White Chicks is always funny and at least we’ll know it will be good.”

"Fair enough, I get that." Jake nodded. He knew what it was like trying to pick up people in New York and the mixed results it could produce. "Honestly I went home with a girl a few weeks ago who gave the worst blowjob I've ever had, and that's saying something." He laughed. "That sucks about work though, I'm sorry your assistant screwed you over." He added before looking back at the TV as she hit his shoulder. "Sounds good to me." He agreed, happy to stop endlessly scrolling through the choices. Plus it meant they could talk over it without having to worry about missing anything since they'd both seen it before.

Santana scrunched her face up in confusion at Jake's admission. "How can you be bad at giving a blowjob? It's like the easiest thing to do, I certainly don't remember you complaining when I did it." She replied with a grin. "Maybe she was just nervous or something. You're attractive and not exactly small, maybe she didn't know how to handle it?"

"She just had no idea what she was doing." Jake laughed. "Of course I had no complaints, you were good at it." He added with a smile. He had fond memories of his night with Santana and he definitely hadn't had any complaints afterwards. "Like she got it in her mouth, right? And then she just stayed there holding it like that. Didn't move or anything. Just looked up at me with it in her mouth like I was gonna cum just from that." He added, clicking play on the movie before putting the remote on the coffee table.

Unable to stop the loud laugh that escaped her mouth as Jake explained what he meant by bad, Santana shook her head and turned her body so that she was facing her friend better than she had been. “That is the funniest thing I’ve heard all day.” She admitted just as he hit play on the movie. “Poor girl.” Was all she offered up before her focus went to the TV screen.

"Right?!" Jake laughed along with Santana. "So I totally didn't feel like repeating that experience tonight." He chuckled, taking another sip of wine. "At least it gave me a funny story to tell even if it was at the price of mediocre sex." Jake joked as the opening credits started.

“At least you have a mediocre sex story to tell, I don’t even have that.” Santana replied, her eyes still focused on the opening credits. “I haven’t had an orgasm not given to me by myself in just over a month and I’m pretty sure I’m starting to lose it. I’ve just been so busy with work and the idea of finding a match on Tinder even seems like too much effort.”

Jake pulled out his phone and started looking for something. "She put her number in my phone, you can have it if you want." He laughed before opening the contact he'd renamed as "Bad BJ - Do Not Call", holding out his phone for Santana to take. "Then you can have all the mediocre sex and you'll start wishing it was just you getting yourself off again." He teased. "Tinder is garbage." He agreed easily. "So many people on there just ghost you and then the ones that do show up are normally freaks in the bedroom, and not in a good way."

Santana pushed Jake’s phone away and  narrowed her eyes at him. “You’re an idiot.” She said with a laugh before taking a sip from her wine. “My vibrator is pretty great so maybe that will be my thing for the foreseeable future. It will have to do until I can find someone worthy of my time, for a city as big as New York is it sure is difficult to find someone.”

Jake grinned at her, taking his phone back and putting it back in his pocket. "That's probably your best option." He agreed, humming in agreement at her last statement. He turned his attention back to the film as it started to get going. They were halfway through the film when he next spoke, and he'd gotten through a glass and a half of wine which was starting to take effect. He felt relaxed, slightly buzzed and like his filter had been very much removed. He looked over at Santana, unable to stop thinking about their earlier conversation. "You know." He spoke up randomly, now talking over the movie. "If you ever wanted a change from your vibrator, you can always use my dick. Like no strings attached, just sex, just something to get you off with." He offered.

Glancing over when Jake started speaking over the movie, Santana raised an eyebrow up at his suggestion. Even though her first instinct was to laugh and reject his offer, the more she thought about it the more it started to appeal to her. He had been the best person she had slept with in a really long time and getting a chance to do it again certainly wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Finishing the rest of her wine, she leaned forward and placed her empty glass on the coffee table and turned to look back over at her friend. “Casual, no strings attached sex?” She repeated, needing the clarification. “And we stay friends and nothing gets awkward between us? Because if it’s that's the offer, I wouldn’t be against it.”(edited)

Jake should really stop letting his mouth speak before he'd thought things through, but frankly he didn't see an issue with this so far. It was just sex, and it was something they were both good at. If it meant more time in bed having good sex and less time out in the city trying to pick up randoms then it seemed like a win-win. "Yeah." He nodded at her question. He knew Santana didn't want more, she'd made that perfectly clear by running out during the night the first time and then by her attitude towards him when they met again. "No dates, no commitment, no responsibilities. Just sex and a lot less time with your vibrator." He confirmed.

Remaining quiet as Jake promised that this would be casual, she reached in-between them for the remote and turned off the TV. “If we’re doing this, we’re doing it now.” She told him before she moved to straddle his lap. Wrapping her arms around his neck, her eyes locked with his for a few seconds before she dipped her head and pressed her lips against his.

Jake could see what was coming, putting his wine glass on the floor before Santana climbed into his lap. "Fine by me." He agreed quietly. The moment of eye contact between them seemed to last forever, building the tension between them. He leaned in to meet her, wrapping his arms around her waist as he kissed her back.

Santana whimpered against his mouth and she was unable to help the way her hips pressed down against his. Pulling away only when she needed to take a breath, she buried her face into the side of his neck and began pressing kisses to his skin. “Bedroom. Rachel would lose her mind if she ever found out we fucked on the couch.”

Between the time he'd spent thinking about sex with Santana before he even opened his mouth to offer this, and the way she was kissing him, Jake was already half-hard. "Sounds like a challenge to me." He commented playfully. However he would rather be in the bedroom so he gently eased himself off the couch, guiding Santana's legs to grip around his waist so he could carry her from the position they were in. He tightened his own arms around her waist, before standing up from the couch completely. One benefit from his job was definitely being in shape enough to use his muscles for things like this.

Smirking against his neck at his remark, her grip around him tightened when Jake stood up from the couch. Once they were finally in her bedroom, she let him place her down on the bed and within seconds she was taking off her shirt. Tossing it to the floor, she unclasped her bra and smirked as she propped herself up on her elbows. “Condoms are in the bedside table, what are you waiting for?”

Jake knew they'd said no strings and just sex, but it still surprised him just how quickly they'd gone from watching their movie to being here. He smirked at her question, ditching his clothes before joining her on the bed. Once they'd both finished, Jake rolled over, pulling the condom off before tossing it in the trash can by her bed. "So, better than your vibrator?" He asked, a small smirk playing on his lips. If anything the sex had been even better than he remembered it being before.

Covering herself with her blankets once Jake moved off of her, she stared up at the ceiling as she caught her breath and smirked at his comment. “Definitely better than my vibrator, was my blowjob satisfactory?” Turning onto her side, she glanced at the clock that was on the bedside table closest to Jake and she raised an eyebrow when she realized the time. “That was definitely took more time than my vibrator too. For once, you actually had a good idea. Who knew it was even possible?”

"Definitely." Jake nodded, returning her smirk. "I'll be changing your name in my phone to reflect that." He joked, getting up to retrieve his clothes from the floor. If there was one thing he knew about casual sex, it was not to get too clingy about it and that included staying around longer than needed. "I do have good ideas occasionally." He laughed as he pulled his boxers back on. "So do you wanna go finish the movie or shall I just go home?" He asked, happy to leave the ball in her court.

Even though she knew he would potentially bring this up whenever he could, she decided to be honest and direct. "You should go home, my legs still feel like jelly and I wouldn't trust myself to get up out of bed right now. But this was fun, we'll totally be doing this again."

"You're welcome." Jake grinned, throwing a playful wink at her before turning his attention to getting the rest of his clothes on. Once he was fully dressed, he checked he had his phone and stood up to leave. "Alright, I'll see ya later Lopez. Come find me when you want another round." He smiled, giving her one last look before heading out of her room and back to his apartment.

Remy and Emile are friends, best friends in fact, but fate has a couple tricks up her sleeve to tear them apart, only to bring them back again. 

This got longer than expected but theres more to the story after this oh yes indeed so buckle up cause part two is gonna be typed tomorrow when it isnt one in the morning so HERE YA GO @happiness-is-regret

So its seventh grade aka awkward central because puberty and acne and awkwardness and it's just awful all around and theres lil Remy who is NOT confident at all by anyone's standards

His parents argue a lot and he learned staying quiet is the best way not to get involved or yelled at in the crossfire so yeah

And then you got Emilie who kinda knows what's goin on but not really. He wears tie dye shirts and aviator glasses sometimes until he had to get actual frames over the summer but it was no big cause he was used to glasses anyways

But Emilie is wiser than the other kids and thinks cliques are stupid and he just loves cartoons and english okay stop teasing him for being a lil bit awkward okay STOp

But yeah he doesn't get friends easy and he tries to squirm in other friend groups but it doesn't feel right. Until Remy. Who is incredibly shy believe it or not! They have no classes together but somehow Remy mustered the courage to compliment Emilies pink hair and BOOM FRIENDSHIP

They eat lunch together. Some days it's in comfortable silence and other times its complaining about teachers or PE miles or this brat kid who vandalized a bathroom stall

And Remy starts warming up and realizing maybe the whole world isn't against him. Just because his home is a literal war zone doesn't mean being friends with Emile is doomed.

At the end of seventh grade the duos lunchtime friendship is going great! Emile is starting to get into cartoons and their convos are “OMG OKAY SO VOLTRON SEASON 2 IS OUT AND IM SCARED REMY I WANT TO CRY FOR MY SPACE CHILDREN ZARKON CAN YEET HIMSELF OFF A CLIFF AND-” “Woah their Em, slow it down sis”

As Remy gets more comfortable there is more teasing and nicknames and laughing but they dont hug and Emile isn't super affectionate but hugs are a thing for friends right???

One day on a weekend it's pretty bad for Remy at home. His parents are yelling and its loud and his breathings picking up and his eyes are shut and he's crying because is it his fault??? Why can't they stop stop stop STOP!

And he has to get out because he cant take it hearing they two people who he loves most fight with each other when they are supposed to love each other and his little brother Janus is sleeping thank god but he needs OUT right fucking now

So he hops out his window and runs. Two houses down and around the corner there's an open field that should probably have a house or a park but low income neighborhoods be like that sometimes ya know?

He runs in the field but then there's trees and a little path but wheres the end and the sun is setting now so he sits and looks at the sky and cries

Emile likes his peace and quiet. Hes and only child but his house gets cluttered with his parents (DOT AND LARRY FITE ME) and their thespian friends on the weekends especially around showtime and tec week so he walks in the field.

So when he comes across Remy he screeches and cusses and they're both apologizing and it's a mess but wait was Remy crying?!?!

So Emile is concerned and sits him back down and they talk. Remy says his parents are probably going to get a divorce and how they've been fighting and all that and Emile starts to understand why he's so sheltered

Remy's crying again so Emile asks “Hey, You can say no but can i hug you?” And Remy nods so they hug and they melt right into itm and they stay there for a while and watch the sunset.

From then on they are attached to the hip. Nothing can separate them. Emile invites Remy over for dinner and out to see his parents shows at the community theater and its fun! Remy kinda gets to be a kid and he has sas now! He sees its okay to be a bit absurd with Larry and how jokes are fine with Dot.

The boys are in the field again after dinner and Emile is talking about Dot and Larry, and Remy cant help but be envious. They're all so happy and perfect and he’ll never get that. He goes home and the glitter fades and he sleeps with music to drown out the shouting but its still there.

Remy says “I wish my parents were like yours. I wish I had that. It's not fucking fair Em”

Emile says “I wish I knew how to help… but I can't. All I can do is offer you a slice of normal and hope you aren't allergic” To which they both laugh. But the insecurity sticks. Remy wonders if he's just going to mess things up later or if him and Emile stop being friends what will happen

And it haunts him. Its summer and his parents get a divorce, but the yelling in person is replaced with battles in court and over text. He has to go to mediation a couple times and Emile is there the next day with icecream and steven universe

Emile starts to notice things. The way Remy's eyes are filled with fire as he banters with Larry or when he rants about things he's passionate about. The way he runs so fast in field like nothing can catch him not even the wind itself. The way his whole face glows when he laughs or how when it's silent with them and the sky, he closes his eyes and hums a song he doesn't know.

And he realizes he's in love and he's so scared because Remy doesn't need romance he needs stability. His world is crumbling and he needs his best friend. And Emilie hides it and surprises himself. Remy doesn't notice the way Emiles hugs last longer or the way he sighs as he walks away. He doesn't notice the stars. His mind is on other things. Remy doesn't have time to feel the same or explore feelings so he doesn't.

Eighth grade things go as normal. Emile is still hopelessly in love. Some nights he cries and some nights he thinks his feelings are finally gone. Some nights Remy sleeps over and they sneak into his moms room and but on stage makeup.

Emile almost kissed him when Remy made him a Jake and Finn card for his birthday. And it was hella cute and cheesy and had “love u babe” on the inside and “happy birthday, bitch” on it and it was classic.

But yeah he totally wasn't disappointed it wasn't Bubbline on the card what???

But then things just… stopped.

Remy stopped going to the field on weekends. He was busy when Emilie wanted to hang out. Em was worried at first that something was wrong at home and that he was lying until he saw Remy around at school with other kids. He was growing his hair out and had a leather jacket and when Emile said hi Remy smiled tight, nodded, and continued to talk to his new friends.

Then he noticed how they were the kids who liked sports or girls or always laughed loud in the cafeteria. He noticed how Remy's sass grew into straight up ego and how his confidence wasn't just with Emile it was with EVERYONE

People waved to him as he walked by. Everyone was “babe” “hun” “sweetie” and “sister” and Emilie felt less special.

And not Eighth Grade was nearly over and Emilie had lost his best friend to the rest of the world. Yes he was happy that Remy was confident and Yes he was happy he made new friends.

But back when Remy needed him, back when they dazzling smile was meant for him, back when the problems were so big you needed two people not just yourself- Emilie could hang on to Remy

But now that Remy didn't need him, he was left for trash. Emilie was heartbroken. He swore to himself he wouldn't let another boy break his heart to the point where cartoons couldn't even cheer him up. He cried when Ruby and Sapphire got married and when Bubbline kicked ass and he prayed for the day when he would have that.

Summer was torture and he never saw Remy in the field. Little did he know Remy was there, just in the trees or wandering at nights when his mom came home yelling and cussing. Emile thought the pain of the divorce was over when Remy was going to court once every 6 months and to family counseling weekly but did it help? No.

Highschool came and Remy climbed to social ladder. He hid the bags under his eyes with sunglasses and kept his pep and sass with starbucks coffee. Combat boots to make him taller.

And Emilie was still alone until Patton came along with Roman. They sat together and then Logan and Virgil joined. Sloane and Corbin who are juniors swung on by. Kai and Elliot would join them the next year and together they became the theatre troupe.

Emilie felt whole with this diverse group of many passions and interests and he couldn't help but smile more. He didn't feel so alone. But part of him still longed for that old friendship he has lost- but there was enough going on to forget it.

Emilie didn't notice Remy staring at him with his fiery eyes when his own friend group were so loud they didn't pay him mind. Remy started to see how the tie die pink haired boy grew up and moved his children with dignity and didn't take their tomfoolery. He saw how he would catch conflicts and mediate them. He saw his goofiness shine through all his actions. And he started to care for this new Emile, but also remember when it was just the two of them. New thoughts lead Remy to think it was him holding Emile back from this all along.

He began to think Emilie was better off without him dragging him down with his million problems. So he too began to embrace to noise and forget.

Next it was Sophomore year when the universe threw them back at each other...

The 100 6x07 analysis - putting the mind at ease

I absolutely loved this episode, the attention to detail, the explanations, the tone, and pacing. It was definitely my favorite of the season so far. And, climbing the charts to the best of the series but you’d have to work really hard to top a The 100 finale. This season is shaping up to be the best, the stories they’re exploring, the sci-fi content, the unpredictability, everything is top notch. Well done Jason and the writers, are you good friends with Elon Musk?

Ready to take a trip down memory lane, buckle up, it’s a long ride, ready, let’s go! I’m breaking this up into Clarke’s encounters with her ghosts since it takes place solely in her mind. It’s fitting for Clarke to wake up in her prison cell given that she’s literally trapped in her subconscious. Also, if I had to picture the inside of it, I’d see drawings everywhere too.

The safe space - daddy’s arms

To me, it seems like the images and voices she encounters first are those she’s lost except for her child. Finn, Wells, Lexa, and of course her father. When Clarke realizes she’s dead, she’s glad her fight is finally over but regrets not being able to say goodbye. To Madi and mom. I’ve seen some people upset that she didn’t include Bellamy, that’s because she did greet him in a certain way when she apologized and told him he was her family.

Now, the weather is a direct product of her mood. When she encounters Jake, the sun is bright in a place she was once happy. Then, the thunder starts when she gets upset. I would have liked it to be Jake himself letting her in on the heartbeat and the fact that she’s alive but he’s only a figment of her imagination. Meaning it’s the way she would have wanted it too. 

I imagine this scene as the life Clarke pictured living. Content, with her father alive and Madi going to school while she draws and farms.

A.L.I.E to the rescue

Those words make no sense. Funny how she instantly transforms into Wanheda in the presence of the AI. I had some other theories on why Clarke survived and then I watched a Youtube video by the Theorizer before the episode aired which explained this fact and it made complete sense. A.L.I.E saved Clarke.

How does this work? I found an article in Techworld that explains it as follows: “At its most basic form, neural lace is an ultra-thin mesh that can be implanted in the skull, forming a collection of electrodes capable of monitoring brain function. It creates an interface between the brain and the machine.

To insert neural lace, a tiny needle containing the rolled up mesh is placed inside the skull and the mesh is injected. As the mesh leaves the needle it unravels, spanning the brain.”

To remove the neuro mesh from Clarke’s brain, they would have to EMP her. In other words, remove Josephine from the brain, drain the last of the neuro mesh and re-insert the body-snatcher.

Furthermore, I’d like to touch on the subject of there is no joy without pain. Believing this is tragical. Sure, life does include unpleasant bumps and hurdles but joy can certainly exist without pain. A glimpse into her trampled heart.

Then, A.L.I.E tells her the painful memories aren’t present. This boggles me somewhat because like I’ve said her most prominent drawings are those she’s lost. Isn’t that painful enough? Is that why she moved on to Mount Weather and the fighting pit or is there something even more agonizing than those? Something Josephine encounters by herself later?

Encountering the parasite

So, Josephine describes why both minds cannot survive simultaneously. I’m not a neurosurgeon but I gathered that the brain does not have the capacity to maintain both, which will lead to cerebral hemorrhaging and a stroke.  

A power struggle between two badass female characters is always a delight to watch. Clarke Griffin is not someone you wanna mess with, told ya! The hypocrisy in Josie calling Clarke selfish and dumb is amusing. Check the mirror, sweetie.

She’s not stupid in the literal sense, obviously, she only overestimates her own causes and abilities. But the “when I tell you not to think of an elephant, what do you think about” move is smart. Unfortunately for her, our blonde hero is one step ahead.

Unlike the prime princess, who lives in a peaceful castle on a moon, Clarke has fought her fair share of battles and easily kicks ass in a physical fight. Just as she thinks she’s won, the parasite shows up again with the news that she can’t die in the mind space. Dramatic sigh.

On being haunted by Bloodreina

“Even your projections hate you, Clarke.” In episode two we already see that she is her own worst enemy. She hates herself more than anyone for the things she’s had to do. 

1) Letting the bomb drop on TonDC

2) Stealing the bunker while Octavia fought for it

3) Leaving Bellamy to die in the fighting pits

Oh and now we learn why we don’t see Bellamy. He’s the one person she cannot face. In 6x04 she acknowledged leaving him to die is her deepest regret. In 6x01 she tells him he kept her sane during the six years alone. Clearly, she’d rather go up against Bloodreina, a controversial monster, than him. Why is that?

Bellamy has forgiven you, Clarke. Go ahead and forgive yourself.

Mount Weather

The place responsible for creating Wanheda. Now, it’s common knowledge that Clarke blames herself for what happened to Mia and Jasper. But seeing her question the godly decisions to save those she loves is heartbreaking. Yes, she’s made some bad choices in the past but this shows just how remorseful and compassionate Clarke truly is. War made her a monster, though that’s not who she is, at all. At least it led to the realization that she’s still in control of her own mind.

Finn’s death and Jasper’s cage

Sneaky, Clarke. Hiding the memory in one of the places you’ll never wish to revisit. But sadly, Josephine doesn’t mind exploring the place where you had to mercy kill Finn or dig into Jasper.

As if it’s not bad enough that the devil lures her to the last place she’ll want to see, she uses the one self-loathing thing about Clarke to manipulate her into giving up. Amusing how the final turning point is learning that Bellamy’s willing to sacrifice her for saving everyone else. Is it the comprehension that Bellamy no longer cares that causes her surrender or the fact that it’s the only way to save her people? A bit of both I assume.

The lock sequence was awesome - 0100. “You forgot about Bellamy and Raven - 0102. There’s only 6 of the 102 left now if I’m right. Seeing her cry in Lexa’s throne though, was so, so sad. 

They definitely saved the best for last with Monty

I cannot express my gratitude for this unexpected return enough. I’ve had some terrible Monty, Harper and Jasper depression hours over the last week and this made my day. So, Mr. Cockroach Murphy, this is not what Monty would have wanted. Letting them get away with killing innocent people for immortality does not fall within the definition of doing better. 

If only Clarke knew how much Madi needs her right now. She’s trudging on dangerous ground and could use some serious motherly guidance.

Who better to light the way to victory than the man who saved humanity? Six seasons and his death down the line and he’s still picking locks. Hate to be the one to say this, but Raven, Monty is purer than you are. 

Applause for using Josephine’s own tactics against her by controlling her through the no-go-zone.

Crossing the sociopath's threshold

That door looks so much like a blissful suburban family home over Christmas, which I’m sure Josephine had back on earth before her tragedy. Oh, and the library is amazing, I must say. I imagine my own mind looking much the same, I love books.

But in that perfect little head, the most horrific things are hidden. Why are the primes so afraid of dying? Is it only power and narcissism that causes Josephine to resort to oblation?

Clarke learns that she offered the nulls to the trees, hence banning them from their society because they hinder the nightbloodline. But Isaac, Kaylee’s lover, gave them to Gabriel to build an army, instead. I’m certain Clarke will use this info in the future.

Gabriel loved Josephine once, I’m sure we’ll still get to this story but I can’t wait to see the face-off between the two. His last host was already 95 at the time of the memory, meaning now, six years later, he’s 101. Which is why I assume he can only exist within the anomaly where time is altered. And like I’ve said many times before the trio in the woods will turn out to be Sanctum’s saviors.

But we also see the good side of Josephine, the person she once was. PTSD probably morphed her into becoming a sociopath and the mind-drives enhanced the trauma. I feel bad for what happened to her but it does not by any means justify the person she’s become.

Why is she looking to Bellamy when she says, “I know how to kill her once and for all.” Did she see the memory of Clarke telling Roan, “I’ll do anything, I’ll stop fighting. Just, please, don’t kill him?”

Bellamy Blake, you genius

I knew it, I called it. Bellamy was the first to figure out that Josie’s not Clarke and of course the first to deduce that she’s still alive. That was some big soulmate energy right there!!! Thank you for being a big ol’ nerd and paying attention in Earth Skills.

That smile, a stark contrast to the tears that rolled last week. His princess is not gone and he’ll swim the Atlantic to bring her back. He’s gonna reel in everyone’s help on this project but be careful Bell, Josephine does not go down easy.

Just a side note. I appreciate Miller and his standoffishness in this scene since no-one seemed to mourn her last week.

One last thing, I may have been wrong about Abby, she might know something and it’s possible that’s she’s planning on taking Russel’s body for Kane. An eye-for-an-eye?

How does Marceline’s upbringing affect her relationships in Adventure Time?

The above is my current idea for an essay question, however after some difficultly in writing a draft with this in mind, I am considering changing it. We have a group tutorial session next week where we will be able to discuss other questions that have to do with this character and the idea of child psychology - whatever I do change it to I still want to relate it to Marceline’s childhood.

Marceline as a character is supposed to come off as quite the teenager, being ‘cool’ and looked up to by the younger protagonist Finn. Her aesthetic design is meant to come across this way, but behind this are certainly layers of personality and backstory that made her into what she is now. She may have started off as a ‘typical teenager’, but has developed into much more as the show has progressed.

Adventure Time Episode Analysis

Many of Marceline’s relationships are quite rocky, especially at the beginning of the show. She starts off as very antagonistic toward the protagonists in her first appearance, and from that point has either teasing or negative relationships with other characters. These relationships are, however, addressed and developed in a serialised fashion and these relationships become a lot more layered. 

I Remember You - Reveal of Marceline and Ice King’s relationship

This episode starts on the character of Ice King, the supposed villain of the show up to this point, singing to his penguin. He was to write a song to ‘get babes’, so goes to visit Marceline, someone he knows is proficient in this field.

His arrival is unexpected, and when Marceline sees him, all she says is “no”, quietly. She furthers their first interaction with anger, telling the Ice King that she had, on a previous occasion, to “not come around [her]”. She continues to be angry with him, wanting him out of her house, until she sees him struggling with his cables and starts to feel pity for him. When Finn and Jake enter to take him away, she decides to let him stay.

They start off with a song where Ice King talks about princesses and his favourite, Princess Bubblegum. He then gets upset as he lingers on how alone he is. Marceline starts to get uncomfortable at this point. To stop him from destroying her house in his sadness, Marceline tells him to “stop acting like this” and to “stop acting crazy”. He pushes her and instantly regrets it, apologising and getting out of her way”. This leads on to a short song by Marceline where she says things like “I’d like to help you, but I don’t know if I can”, “you know I’m actually glad to see you.” Ice King takes this the wrong way and tries to kiss her, and she tries bringing up his past life. Some of the clippings of newspapers he brought had images of him “before the war”.

Using some notes Simon wrote during the war, they sing a final song focusing on Simon’s sadness at how crazy he’s becoming due to the crown. Marceline gets some insight into what Simon, her parental figure, was feeling during the worst time of his life – slowly losing his memory of her whilst trying to save her.  “Please forgive me for whatever I do when I don’t remember you”.

This episode is the first to show Marceline and Ice King’s relationship in more detail and gives a good overview to it. When Marceline was young, for whatever reason, she was left alone on Earth in the remnants of the Mushroom War. Simon finds her and takes care of her for as long as he can before the effects of the crown drive him to insanity, and at this point, he leaves too. From this we can determine that Marceline was left alone without a caregiver for two stretches of her life where she desperately needed one.

More of their relationship during Marceline’s childhood is explored in the episode “Simon and Marcy”. Here we can see Simon’s drift into madness as he uses the crown to keep them safe. Due to their past, Marceline feels melancholic toward Ice King, wishing that he would remember her as she does him. Later in the show, she gets the chance to talk to Simon again, and they reconcile this issue for the moments they can be together. This happens in the episode “Betty”, where she sacrifices an important thing to her in order to help him fulfil his final wish.

It came from the Nightosphere - Reveal of Marceline’s father

This episode starts with Finn and Marceline singing a song together, where Marceline sings a strange song about her father eating her fries, giving it a very sad tone. “Daddy do you even love me, well I wish you’d show it ‘cause I wouldn’t know it.” In this first scene we can already see some of Marceline’s relationship with her father.

She wants him to care, but she doesn’t seem to want to put in the effort to see him, so Finn does it for her. Hunson Abadeer, Marceline’s father, introduces himself by trying to eat Finn’s soul and has an evil aura to him in general. He then leaves to devour the souls of everyone in Ooo – Marceline seems indifferent to this issue, and instead just wants to get her axe bass back, which her father stole.

Although Marceline is angry with Finn for bringing her father there, they have a light-hearted relationship throughout this episode “Marceline, drop the Finn bomb!”.

Marceline attacks her father to get her bass back, but when he says, “you can’t destroy me”, she stops. “I don’t want to destroy you, look, just stay out of my life!”. She gives up on attacking and talks to Finn and says “I just want my dad to care about me”.

They continue to face Hunson until Finn gets to the point where he gets the axe out of his grip, and Marceline gets it back, and the interactions between her and her father at this victory reflect a teenager / father relationship “in your face dad!” “Give back that axe Marceline! You don’t respect it enough”. They end this exchange by walking away from each other, and Finn tries to keep them together by playing the song Marceline sings at the start of the episode.

“Marceline, do you really feel this way? Of course, I love you.” As they reconcile, Finn finishes his mission by stabbing Hunson to release the souls he’s eaten and sends him back to the Nightosphere. Marceline’s mad at him for embarrassing her, but they end on a friendly note.

From this episode we can gather that Marceline and Hunson’s relationship is complicated but is also familiar, in the way that it’s a teenager and parent relationship. They no longer see eye to eye at all, especially since being separated by different dimensions, and due to a fry eating incident, Marceline feels like her dad no longer cares about her. She would rather pretend he didn’t exist, but still lets her feelings about him eat away at her. Hunson doesn’t seem to notice much tension between them, and while he feels like she doesn’t respect certain family values – such as the axe that was passed down to her – he still loves her and doesn’t see that she questions that. He’s loving but distant.

They interact further in other episodes. We see that in the past it was Simon that looked after Marceline when she was abandoned as a child, and we must question where her father was in the scenario. In a flashback clip in “Marcy & Hunson”, much further on in the show, we see that when Simon had to leave Marceline, he sent Hunson to care for her in his place. In this flashback, he shows no regard for the time that Marceline must have spent alone and acts as if they were already acquainted. In this episode he also shows extreme pride in Marceline’s concert performance but doesn’t realise his boundaries.

Marceline’s relationship with her father is distant. As her only biological family in the show, you would think they would be closer, but there was no attachment to him as a child. He was always just some random guy that popped in and out of her life and didn’t give her the emotional support she needed growing up.

Ketchup - Background to Marceline’s mother

This episode features just Marceline and BMO. It starts off with BMO showing up to Marceline’s house to fight a vampire threat that had already been dealt with, but Marceline finds something else for them to do. She has an old USB that BMO can help her investigate, and whilst it scans, they tell some stories. Animation wise, these are very stylised. BMO’s story has a vert fantastical twist to it, demonstrating their childish attitudes.

Marceline tells a story about her and Princess Bubblegum, and their relationship as best friends, and the recent events in the show.

The USB then reveals its contents, and we see some images, the most important being one of Marceline with her mother. Throughout the show, we don’t get to see much of Marceline’s mother at all, and while she doesn’t reveal anything about their relationship, BMO creates a story with the picture. The story they create suggests that the mother could only be with Marceline for a short time, but she had to leave after a certain period. In response, Marceline says “I think I’ve heard a story like that, a long, long time ago”.

As stated, we don’t see much of Marceline’s mother throughout the show, the most notable other appearance being in “Everything Stays”, where she and a child Marceline are seen in what seems to be a mobile home in the middle of some fields. Marceline’s mum just finishes talking about how she met Hunson and tells Marceline to sleep. She complains that her dreams are too “weird” to sleep, and her mother responds that “something weird might just be something familiar viewed from a different angle, and that’s not scary, right?”

Marceline’s relationship with her maternal mother was short-lived, and while it seemed like she only had her mother there at the time, this area of her childhood seemed okay. But Marceline only has her mother, it seems, which would have created a lot of dependency on her throughout this time. It looks to be before the war started, so before Simon finds her alone, giving some more context as to what must have happened at this time. Marceline’s mother, whether willing or not, was the first person that she cared for to leave her.

What was Missing - Relationship to Princess Bubblegum

This episode is fairly early in the show, with quite a simple scenario – a range of character have something that was very important to them stolen by a ‘door lord’, and they all work together to get it back. In the end, they must perform a song as a band to open the door and get their stuff back. Marceline, being the musician of the group, starts the attempts by singing a song that seems directed at Princess Bubblegum, talking about how she wants to, effectively, kill her.

When PB complains, she grows agitated and says “you don’t like that? Or do you just not like me!”. The song she sings now describes how she’s not perfect enough for PB and hints at an earlier relationship where they ended on bad terms. “I’m just your problem”.

This song ends when Marceline gets very deep into her emotions, and decides to pull back, reverting to more vulgar lyrics that suggest killing PB rather than making up with her.

In the original episode, Marceline goes as far as to spit on PB, causing her to try and leave. Finn pulls everyone back together for one last shot at opening the door, singing a song about their friendship.

When the door does open, it’s revealed that PB’s important item was a band shirt that Marceline had given her a long time ago, something she now wears as pjs.

Up until this point in the show, Marceline and Princess Bubblegum’s relationship was portrayed as teasing and mean, but this episode gave this more context, that something had happened. In future episodes, like “Varmints”, we discover that PB got very busy with creating and managing her candy kingdom, and didn’t have time for Marceline anymore, which is most likely what caused the rift in their relationship. In the series finale “Come along with me”, their relationship is fully reconciled, and they kiss, confirming that they had a romantic relationship in the end.

Marceline spends a lot of the show pushing PB away and not wanting to get too emotionally involved with her again. In the episode “Sky Witch”, she goes to PB for help recovering her childhood toy, but tries to keep it professional – PB was just the only one that could help, that was all.

Stakes (Miniseries) as a whole - Reveal of Marceline’s mother and growing up

In this episode, we get a few flashes into Marceline’s past. We start off with her mother and a young Marceline, who wants to play, but her mother tells her it’s instead nap time. Marceline complains that her dreams are too weird to sleep, and her mother comforts her, saying that “all dreams are weird”, and begins to sing a song:

Let’s go in the garden,you’ll find something waiting Right there where you left it lying upside down When you finally find it, you’ll see that it’s faded The other side is lighter when you turn it around Everything stays, right where you left it  Everything stays, but it still changes Ever so slightly, daily and nightly In little ways, where everything stays

We then move on into the future, where Marceline has lost her mother and now only has Simon. He’s preparing to leave, seeing himself as too dangerous to be near Marceline anymore. Marceline doesn’t want him to go.  We then see a teenage Marceline, hunting vampires. She’s fighting for moral good here, but still has these violent tendencies. 

The same teenage Marceline is then seen meeting humans and being very friendly but not quite fitting in, the people seeing her as an evil vampire. She still seeks their approval though, and wants to help them. This takes some time, and she eventually becomes friends with them after they recognize their connection through music.  She continues to live with these humans to help and protect them from vampires. She wants to rid them of their threats to keep them there, because for whatever reason she can’t go with them.  This accumulates in a fight between her and the vampire king - the humans lose trust for her after this, and she becomes immortal.

Throughout this series of episodes, we see Marceline addressing her vampirism and wanting to be rid of it. She’s seen history repeating itself over and over, and doesn’t want to be around for it anymore - she wants a normal, human lifespan, even if it means eventually perishing.  

“Some bad things happened to me when I was little. When I became a vampire I was a messed up kid. Now it’s a thousand years later and I’m still messed up”

Throughout this mini series, Marceline has multiple dreams addressing her feelings toward the current situation, the first of which shows a distinct wish to not be a vampire anymore, and to separate herself from it. She feels as if this is her identity though, and in the dream her body breaks apart.

In another episode, we see a bit more of Marceline’s past without Simon. As a roughly 10-12 year old child, she had to fend for herself (find herself food, build herself a shelter etc). Other people still didn’t want to interact with her at this time.
