It’s Just Business - one
Werewolf Steve Rodgers x reader series
Warnings for the series: fluffness, Bucky and Sam bickering like five year olds, smutty smut, bad language.
Part two
Tumblr media
“Buck, I can feel her here.” Steve spoke, his figure frozen as his wolf tried clawing his way out. Fighting to find it’s mate.
“The only people here are the servants.” His beta replied patting his shoulder. “She’ll reveal herself soon enough.”
“Dinner is served.” An old man dressed in a penguin suit said poshly dragging out each syllable. Everyone gathered around the table taking their seats.
The woman of the house whispered something to the older looking maid, though to everyone else except her husband, they all heard it as though she shouted it.
“Get my daughter down here.” The maid scurried off and the woman plastered a fake smile upon her face. A few moments of waiting later, a sweet scent of vanilla, old books and rain filled Steve’s nostrils.
I walked into the dining room my hair swaying behind me, my outfit was too revealing for my mother’s taste, I could see it in her eyes when I walked in, but I suppose that’s why I wore it. Just to see her pissed off expression, it gave me a giddy feeling inside. Flashing a smile to the participants of tonight’s show. I couldn’t wait to see how my parent’s had planned to brag today.
“I apologise for being late.” I spoke clearly, sitting down at the end of the table, opposite to my father who gave me a small nod. I returned the gesture. Food was placed in front of me and my stomach lurched at the fancy pancy sustenance.
“Would so kill for a burger.” I grumbled quietly, but a muffled snort had me looking at a brunette. He wore his hair in a low man bun, his blue eyes deep. His black shirt suited the dark demeanour he held. Blinking away from our locked gazes, I tuned into the shrill sound of my mother’s voice as she conversed with their wonderful benefactors.
That’s who this meal was for. My father, the Mayor, had only a small handful of people he trusted his affairs to. The three people sat at this dining table were some of them. They gave my father his protection against politisions that might try and weave their way into his office. The three men lead an organisation that I wanted to stay far away from, one that snuck inside other organisations and gained power from knowing their secrets.
The other two groups of people gave my father his money and his immunity to do whatever he wanted to people and get away with it. It wasn’t that my father was a bad man, he had just done certain things to get where he was now. Certain things that gave him his status as Mayor, that gave him his money, that gave him all the secrets that filled his pockets.
My parent’s invite their benefactors over for dinner frequently but I always avoided them, with the excuse of studying or extra curricular activities. However this one I couldn’t get out of, I didn’t think of an excuse quick enough. Was too tired that day and now I had to munch on leafy soup instead of my usual burger and fries from my favourite diner.
I took the chance to look around at the other two men. One was a man who I’d actually met before, once at my Father’s office. His name was Sam, he was kind and funny. Made the meeting we had to sit through bearable with his jokes and the gift of sharing my sarcastic language. His dark purple shirt made him look some what posh, though the bored look in his eyes could of made me laugh until my stomach hurt.
The third man was absolutely gorgeous. He was the kind of man I wanted. All rugged and lumberjack like. His dirty blonde hair slightly overgrown, but not enough to be able to tie it back like the brunette. His beard had me clenching my legs together at the thought of beard burn on my thighs. Damn. How can someone be so hot? I didn’t know it was physically possible for a shirt to stretch that much. The dark blue material was clinging to his body for dear life, trying desperately not to break as he moved his arm up and down gulping down the green soup.
It seemed he was trying to eat it quickly, almost getting it over and done with. Better than having to endure the rath of my mother for refusing her ‘finest’ chef’s qu’usine. He seemed to noticed me staring at him but ignored it. His eyes were blue, they reminded me of the ocean. There was something reassuring about it.
“Miss Alexandra,” I looked to my left to see Martha my personal maid, “there’s a very important call for you.” She could hardly contain her excitement, too loud that everyone heard what she said. I glanced towards my mother who nodded, instantly I was out of my seat practically jogging to answer the phone.
“Hello?” I spoke, cringing at the eagerness in my tone.
“Miss. Culling?”
“Yes this is she.”
“This is Townsend University calling about your application for a scholarship. We wanted to let you know personally that we are declining your application. We’re very sorry.” The woman sounded as if she could care less.
“Can I ask the reason why?” My lip quivered making me bite down on it hard.
“You simply have too much money Miss. Culling. I’m sure your parents can help you in securing a place here. Other than that we have no other way to help you, I apologise. Have a good evening.” She hung up after spouting her bitter train of thought.
My breath came out shaky matching my unsteady hand as I placed the phone down. Covering my mouth to stop any sobs from escaping.
“Oh my dear.” Martha wrapped her arms around my shoulders stroking a wrinkled hand through my straightened hair. “Maybe you should call your brother. Not the silly whipper snapper but the golden troublemaker.” She chuckled at the thought of the boys she basically raised. She was right.
“Little sister to what do I owe the honour?”
“Townsend University rejected me.” I fought the tears that wanted nothing more but to ruin the mascara I’d put on earlier this evening.
“Oh Alexandra. I’m so sorry. Did they say why?”
“Our parent’s money. Same as the others. How did you do it Bash?” My foot tapped against the hard wood floor waiting impatiently for some kind of way to fix my problem.
“Back when I was completing mother and father’s task, colleges only cared about having someone of title on their campus to get a higher status. Now all they care about is money.” He scoffed.
“I don’t have any other options left. Bash what do I do?” I begged him to tell me.
“Why don’t you come here for a few days? You can relax while I think of a plan. Get you out of that retched house.” I heard him flipping through a book and I knew it was his calendar.
“Are you sure Lara won’t mind?” I inquired after his pregnant wife.
“Never she adores you, you know that. Just get through the evening little sister and I’ll have a car come pick you up.” He hummed through the phone.
“Thankyou brother.” I hung up and took a series of deep breaths. I sighed making my way back inside the room.
“Who was it my dear?” Mother asked with a slight glare that if anyone else saw it, they’d assume it was motherly concern. I was not anyone else.
“Bash called.” I replied sitting down next to the lumberjack who’s eyes burned a whole in my head.
“Oh our eldest son, he is a delight.” My mother chirped.
“Isn’t he just.” I quipped under my breath. I loved my brother dearly but I couldn’t help but be slightly jealous of the affection he gained from both my parents when I had none.
“I’m staying there for a few days before finals start.” I smiled at her. She seemed to think it over for a moment before glancing at my father.
“I think it’s a good idea.” He shrugged and went back to whatever they were talking about before I came back in.
Soon dinner was over, it took far too long for my liking. My father and his benefactors retired to his office for a while. My mother on the phone to one of her stupid friends bitching about something I didn’t care to listen to. I just wanted this evening to be over.
“Miss, your father would like a word.” Omg did he know already? Did he find out I had failed? No! He couldn’t! He promised to stay out of it until the end of the year. Wiping my sweating hands on my jumpsuit, I knocked on the office door and went in.
My Father’s office wasn’t too big or too small. The double doors I stepped through were made from a dark wood like everything else. There were books covering every inch of the right wall and a window on the left one. In the middle was a big desk my stoic parent sat at. The three men scattered around the room. The brunette sat at the windowsill. The blonde stood leaning against the bookshelf. And Sam sat in the left of the two chairs sitting opposite my fathers desk. I took the right and waited expectantly.
“You’re going to stay with Steve here until the end of summer.” He gestured to the blonde from earlier. Steve Rodgers. That was it? That’s all my father had to stay.
“Why?” I wouldn’t usually question my father but something in me pushed to ask. I had a right to know.
“I said you’d be sent somewhere this year for your survival skills and this is it. Anything could happen at any moment. You could be kidnapped or this very house could be held hostage. I have be sure I’m not worrying about you in case that happens. I need to know that I can focus of the business side of it not emotion.” He grunted. As if he had any emotions at all.
“The end of summer...starting when?” My nails dug into my palms, I started to feel so angry. I was eighteen years old for Christ sake and he was sending me away like he did when I was a child to summer camps so he didn’t have to deal with me.
“After you come back from your brother‘s house.” Suddenly I never wanted to come back from Bash’s house.
“But that’s eight months.” I sputtered, this was ridiculous. He was sending me away for almost a year give or take a few months.
“You dare question me in my own home?” He leaned forward on his desk glaring me down. I had glared back before and had faced the consequences. Not this time.
“No father. I’ll start packing the second I’m home.” I lowered my head.
“Good. Now get out.” I didn’t need to be told twice. The moment the door closed behind me I ran to my room pulling a bag out from my closet, packing what I’d need for a few days away and leaving without a goodbye. The car was already waiting for me just as Bash had promised.
“Thank. You. Bash.” I grinned getting inside the black car and telling the driver to step on it. Thoughts plagued my mind while I gazed out the window at the big trees.
Why was I being sent away? Why so long? Why didn’t my parents love me enough to want me to stay? Was it my fathers idea? How the fuck was I going to make a plan to complete my parent’s task if I’m up in the forest? Was it the forest or mountains? Or both?
But the question I didn’t expect my mind to conjure up left me slapping my hand against my head to pushed it away.
Was I going to enjoy living with the big sexy lumberjack called Steve?

What makes the red lionfish (Pterois volitans) such a successful and powerful invader in Atlantic Ocean waters compared to its rather lamblike existence in its native Pacific Ocean?
A new North Carolina State University study examining two native lionfish regions in the Pacific and five invading regions in the Atlantic showed the greatest genetic similarities between lionfish in the region of Taiwan and the Bahamas, suggesting a population near Taiwan was the source of the invading species.
Lionfish were introduced to the Atlantic in the mid-1980s, most likely as the result of a marine ornamental aquarium trade. In the Atlantic, P. volitans acts differently from the native Pacific species. Known to be shadowy and furtive in their native Pacific waters, lionfish—freed from Pacific predators—become voracious predators in the Atlantic, responsible for massive reef fish kills, devastating economically important grouper and snapper. Plus, they rival rabbits in procreation.
"P. volitans has a lot going for it in Atlantic waters," said Martha Burford Reiskind, research assistant professor of applied ecology at NC State and corresponding author of a paper describing the research. "They are found at high densities and in some cases can spawn every four days in the Atlantic; their eggs can travel great distances on ocean currents, exacerbating their spread.

Putting the "East" in Northeast Philly
Tumblr media
Have you heard of Ryerss?
The peculiar museum and library is situated at the top of a hill in Burholme Park. The 19th-century mansion tells the story of the wealthy Waln and Ryerss families, their fascination with the Eastern world, and a scandal that rocked Philadelphia at the time.
In the museum, you will find an eclectic collection of art and treasures from Europe, Asia, India, and Japan. The lending library brings the old in with the new, containing a variety of best sellers, children’s books, periodicals, and popular non-fiction that you can borrow.
The best part? The museum is free to visit! Upon his death, Robert Ryerss deeded the family estate be turned over to the City of Philadelphia to be used as a park, library, and museum, free to the people, forever.
Here are some of the most odd and intriguing things we found at the Ryerss Museum & Library during a recent visit.
Tumblr media
Be Our Guest Meet Snapper, the Ryerss Mascot. This taxidermy American alligator is a calling card stand. Before telephones, when people visited each other, they would present their calling card, similar to today’s business card. The butler would bring it to the owner of the house who would decide whether he would receive the visitor. Although telephones were introduced in the 1870s, the custom calling card prevailed throughout the 19th century.
Tumblr media
Giant Spider Crab
Next up is a giant papier mache oddity. Ryerss Site Director Martha Moffat says the spider crab has been intriguing and intimidating museum visitors for decades.
The Japanese spider crab (Macrocheira kaempferi) is the largest living arthropod; fully grown, it can reach a leg span of almost 13 feet and a weight of up to 44 pounds.
The papier mache version isn’t that large, but it’s still big enough to give visitors a fright! It is thought that Japanese spider crabs have a lifespan of up to 100 years, but the species itself is much older. It is often referred to as a living fossil because its fossils date back 100 million years to the Cretaceous period, when some of the most famous dinosaurs (like Tyrannosaurus rex) lived.
Tumblr media
The Asia Collection This massive– but oddly calming– 11th-century Buddha greets you upon entering the Asian gallery, which was added to the Ryerss Museum by the City in 1921 to make room for the collection. The gallery houses a collection of artifacts gathered from China, India, and Japan that Maryann Reed Ryerss Bawn collected after her husband Robert’s death. This is where the scandal comes in, but you’ll have to visit for yourself to find out!
Temple University Professor Carol Harris-Shapiro recently completed an exciting study of the Asian gallery, where she uncovered some very interesting things about the collection. Not only does the museum house treasures from China, India, and Japanese as originally thought, but also Nepal, Java, Myanmar, Syria, and Tibet! It also covers all kinds of religions including Confucianism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shinto, and Taoism.
In an academic report published by Temple University, Harris-Shapiro calls Ryerss, “a testament to Philadelphia as a nexus of global trade and global interest.”
Tumblr media
Pet Cemetery On your way out, be sure to visit the pet cemetery. Robert Ryerss was one of the founders of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The family loved their pets dearly… so much so that they buried most of them in the front yard! Portraits of their dogs and horses also hang in the library and museum.
Plan a Visit! Ryerss Museum & Library is open Friday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Events First Saturday of every month, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.: Used book sale in the basement Second Saturday of every month, 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m.: Crafts activity for children

My Philosophy on Dog Training
Tumblr media
One Long Island socialite had a three-and-a-half year old Maltese, which she had trained herself. Assured that he was perfectly housebroken, she bought another to keep him company, and then had her entire house redecorated. The final result-with eighteenth-century antiques, oriental rugs, and fine engravings-was so splendid that soon she received a call from the feature editor of a top home-decoration magazine, who wanted to interview her and publish full-color pictures of her decorator's work. The editor and photographer were shown in
and settled themselves on a needlepoint couch. One of her Maltases sauntered into the room. "Do your dogs ever mess up the house?" the editor asked, smiling. "Never," the owner assured her. "I trained them both myself, and this one is perfectly housebroken." With this, the "perfect" Maltese came closer, sniffed, and urinated copiously on the editor's shoe. The interview was quickly terminated. The next morning the chagrined owner called me. Among other things, I explained that a "perfect" dog often regresses when a new dog enters the house. But there are techniques to stop this kind of behavior. I have four dogs-three Maltases (Inches, Sleepy, and Snapper Dan) and a Weimaraner (Plum)-all of whom are totally housebroken. I will not have them lifting a leg in my apartment, which is full of large houseplants, and patchwork leather and suede couches and chairs fashioned entirely by hand, by my wife Jo. In addition to the dogs, I have a parrot, Martha (who won't talk but can bark), and a parakeet, Saturday. I also recently installed an eighty-gallon all-glass saltwater aquarium, with a number of damselfish, angelfish, and tangs. And last but not least, there's my daughter, Stephanie, who is the only one in the house who doesn't listen to me but whom I have to listen to when she practices on her piano or talks for hours on the phone to her friend Mary. Plum, my Weimaraner, is a showpiece for my theories and techniques. He responds to voice, hand, and body commands with absolute precision. When I merely indicate an object with a gesture, he leaps over it with the grace of a gazelle. As a joke, he will steal a specific lady's purse on command. People are fascinated by his ability to bring back the magazines of my choice. I say, "Bring me Time." Plum passes by Newsweek and picks up Time. I floored everyone in the bank one morning by asking the teller for one one dollar bill and one one-hundred dollar bill, then having Plum successfully fetch me the larger denomination. However, my favorite feat is to send Plum out to shop for groceries. Given a basket and sent out the door, Plum makes his way to the proper shelves, tips cans of dog food into the basket, and trots up to the cashier, who, recognizing Plum, charges me for the day'S basketful. Plum races home, careful not to spill, and gets a reward for his good work. All the tricks in this book are ones that my dog has mastered. The training techniques I used to teach him are ones you will soon learn. In some twelve years of working with animals, I have trained approximately eight thousand dogs for individual clients. In addition, I have trained the animal actors for hundreds of movies, TV commercials, and ads. I grew up in Brooklyn, where I was first drafted into dog training when my father brought home a puppy named Tonto. He gave me and my two brothers four weeks to housebreak the dog. The first three weeks we didn't bother to try to train him. Like all too many people, we thought that training takes care of itself. As the four week deadline approached, Tonto was still untrained. The three of us, fearful of having to give the puppy away, set up round-the-clock watches of eight hours each. Tonto would misbehave, be punished, be taken out again and again-and finally shaped up. The next dog I got was after I had left home. I started training him, and almost immediately I noticed a great difference between him and the dogs we had as children. I realized that it's the owner who makes a dog what he is. I soon became so fascinated by this principle that I began devoting all my free time to training the dog and researching the effect that people have on their dogs. I never thought of making a business out of training dogs, I was just fascinated by the whole relationship of dogs and people and wanted to find out as much as I could about the subject. I read as many books as possible, researched every conceivable training method, including military training, police training, hunting, obedience, trick, and anything else you can think of. I spoke and worked with many different trainers. Some I learned from, others learned from me But this just wasn't enough. Nobody could explain the one thing I wanted to know more than anything else-the human element. Nobody's dog is the same as anybody else's. No dog responds in quite the same way as another. Therefore, I started to research dog owners and not just dogs, and in order to do this I had to start working with them. By this point, I had made a fair amount of money in the Seventh .Avenue garment industry-a job I really didn't care for. I left and devoted my time to researching owner/dog dynamics. That was the beginning of my career. Since then, I have made many personal TV and radio appearances across the country and abroad. Whenever I'm on, the questions run pretty much the same from program to program: :'How do you stop a dog from chewing?" 'My dog bit someone. He used to be so gentle. Why did he do that?" "How do you stop a dog from pulling you down the street?" "How% do you stop a dog from relieving himself in the house?" "'that kind of dog will go with ours?" "We would like to mate our dog. Can you set it up?" "Did you train the dog in this commercial? Or that movie?" (When the inevitable leopard-coat question comes up, I simply reiter ate that it should be left on the leopard. T7he only skins we should use are those of animals raised for food.) At home, the questions continue .

Salt Baked Fish
This post is sponsored by Morton Salt, but as usual, all opinions are 100% my own. Thank you for supporting We are not Martha!
You might be surprised to learn how easy it is to make salt baked fish… And the results are an incredibly moist and well-seasoned fish with a gorgeous presentation!
When was the last time you entered the kitchen just a little nervous for your next cooking or baking endeavor? That’s exactly how I felt when I decided to tackle salt baked fish. I had heard about salt baking fish and had seen beautiful photos of salt baked fish, but I had never even thought about doing it for myself.
Until Morton Salt released their new Alexa skill, the Salting Sous Chef, and made it seem so ridiculously easy that I decided to just go for it! My mom came along for the adventure since she had never made salt baked fish either and we spent a wonderful day in the kitchen.
I’ve recently become slightly obsessed with salting my food, but I have a lot to learn in terms of when to add salt to various foods, what kind of salt to use for different foods, etc. Morton’s Salting Sous Chef is here to help uncover all of that! You can either tell the app what you want to cook or just ask it for a salting tip. We keep one of our Echoes right in the kitchen (mainly because I like to have dance parties when I’m cooking) and this is an app I can definitely see myself using on the regular so I can always make sure I’m salting my food correctly. Check out my video tutorial at the end of this post to see exactly how the app works!
But first, let’s talk about fish, baby.
WHY SALT BAKE FISH
You may be wondering why the heck anyone would want to take a whole fish, cover it in salt, and bake it, right? Well besides the fact that it looks really pretty (obvi. quite important), the salt coating helps the heat of the oven cook the delicate fish evenly and gently without added cooking oils. The end result is a super moist fish that’s perfectly seasoned. And no, it’s not overly salty because the fish’s skin adds a layer of protection. This technique is seriously awesome.
BUYING WHOLE FISH
If you’re like me, you’re probably used to going to the grocery store and buying your fish already cut into filets. Working with whole fish can be intimidating if it’s your first time, but you can have the fish monger do most of the work, so it’s not as daunting. Obviously, you’ll first have to make sure your local store sells whole fish, but if not, you can likely call ahead and ask the fish monger to save some for you. I recommend asking them to clean and gut the fish for you, so you don’t have to do it yourself and by the time you bring it home, it’s ready for you to get cooking. This was my first time ever preparing whole fish and I couldn’t get over how beautiful it was.
I got a 1-pound branzino and a 1.5-pound red snapper.
SALT BAKED FISH RECIPE
But before I could do anything, I had to ask Morton’s Salting Sous Chef what I was doing and which kind of salt I should be using for my salt baked fish.
Alexa told me to stuff my fish with herbs, but I decided to add some other fun stuff, too. For the red snapper, I used grapefruit, lime, and mint. And for the branzino, I used onion, lemon, and parsley. Because the fish monger prepared the fish, literally all I had to do was stuff it.
Then I got the salt mixture prepped, which just consists of Morton Coarse Kosher Salt and egg whites. How much salt and how many egg whites you need will obviously depend on the size of your fish and for my just under 3 pounds of fish, I found 6 cups of salt (a 3-lb. box) and 6 egg whites worked well. You’ll want to mix the salt and egg whites together until the texture is like wet sand.
And then it’s time to cover your fish in the salt mixture! I made a salt bed for each fish on a baking sheet and then continued using the mixture to coat each of the fish completely.
And bake at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes, until the salt is starting to turn golden.
Let the fish cool slightly, for about 5 minutes… And then for the fun part! Crack that salt coating off. You can use any kind of mallet for this; I used the kind you’d use for crabs at a crab bake.
How you serve the salt baked fish is totally up to you. I just think it looks so beautiful on the pan like this and if you’re having company, you may want to show it off to them like this. In addition to the taste, one of the big benefits to salt baked fish is how stunning it looks when you chip the salt away.
Of course, it’s slightly awkward to serve a whole fish sitting in a bed of salt on a baking pan to your dinner party and after your guests go “oooh,” they may be like, “OK, so what now??” So after showing it off and letting your guests get some pics for Instagram, you may want to remove the skin and filet it for them.
Guess what? Everything I heard about salt baked fish is true! I’m honestly not sure if I’ve ever had such a moist and well-seasoned piece of fish in my life. It was seriously melt-in-your-mouth perfection.
Who knew a 3 lb. box of kosher salt could make for such a delicious meal? And though I started off thinking this was going to be super complicated and time consuming, it ended up being incredibly easy to prep and bake. But ridiculously impressive, right? Serve it with a simple salad and it makes for the perfect light, but deliciously satisfying meal.
Thanks to the Morton Salting Sous Chef for teaching me how easy salt baked fish is! Not only does it help with specific recipes, but it also offers great tips on all things salt, including what to do if you over-salt your food. You can enable the app for your Alexa devices now!

Course: Entree
Cuisine: American, Eclectic
Keyword: fish, salt
Author: Sues
Ingredients
2-3 lbs. whole fish like red snapper or branzino (either 2 smaller fish or 1 large fish), cleaned and gutted
1/4 grapefruit, sliced into rounds
1/2 lime, sliced into rounds
6-10 mint leaves
1- 3 lb. box Morton Coarse Kosher Salt
6 large egg whites
Instructions
Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.
Stuff fish with grapefruit slices, lime slices, and mint leaves (see recipe notes for alternative stuffing)
In a large bowl, mix together kosher salt and egg whites until mixture resembles wet sand.
Spread about 1 cup of the mixture on the bottom of a large baking sheet to create a "bed" for the fish. Lay the fish on the bed. Use the rest of the salt mixture to completely coat the fish, gently pressing down.
Bake fish for about 30 minutes (or until fish has an internal temperature of about 135 degrees). Remove from oven and let cool slightly, about 5 minutes.
Use a mallet to gently crack the salt coating away from the fish.
Serve fish as is or remove the skin and fillet before serving.
Recipe Notes
Alternative stuffing: 1/4 of a small onion, sliced; 1/2 lemon cut into rounds; and a small bunch of parsley

Having a (minke) whale of a time on the Ribbon Reefs
Underwater encounters with whales are very rare unless you travel to destinations where they gather to feed or breed. But even then these large marine mammals are often very shy and most encounters are very brief. However, there is one member of the whale family that seeks out boats and snorkelers – the wonderful dwarf minke whale.
The dwarf minke whale is the smallest member of the baleen whales, growing to only 8m in length. This species is only found in the Southern Hemisphere, spending the summer months feeding in sub-Antarctic waters and migrating to the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef over winter to breed and give birth.
These small whales are very different to their larger cousins, as when in reef waters they are strangely attracted to stationary boats, often hanging around for hours and even days. This has allowed dive operators, with special swim-with-whale permits, to place snorkelers in the water with these curious mammals for some remarkable encounters.
While dwarf minke whales can be seen almost anywhere on the Great Barrier Reef over winter, they are most frequently seen on the Ribbon Reefs, especially in June and July. During this period the liveaboard boats that operate to these remote reefs can almost guarantee a close encounter with a dwarf minke whale.
One of the boats that operates to this area each week is Spirit of Freedom. I recently joined Spirit of Freedom for a three day Ribbon Reefs trip in late July in the hope of a dwarf minke whale encounter, and can honestly say I had a whale of a time.
After boarding the 37m long vessel in Cairns in the morning, our first day saw us diving off Cairns at Norman Reef. We did two wonderful dives at a site called Troppos, seeing a great variety of reef fish, reef sharks, turtles and stingrays. Overnight we headed north, to the heart of the Ribbon Reefs.
The next morning I woke to find us moored at Steve’s Bommie and the news that a dwarf minke whale was already circling the boat. I was keen to jump straight in, but trip director Lucy Hutchinson said we would do a dive first and then snorkel with the whale. The dive at Steve’s Bommie was sensational, 30m visibility, schooling reef and pelagic fish, plus a great assortment of marine life. I even saw the dwarf minke whale swim by at the edge of the visibility.
After the dive it was minke time. After a briefing about dwarf minke whale procedures – no splashing, no diving, just hang onto the line and the whale will inspect you – the crew fed out a surface line for us to hang onto.
I silently slipped into the water and made my way to the end of the line. After ten minutes and no whale a few people headed in for breakfast, but I stuck it out and was rewarded ten minutes later when the whale finally decided to have a look at me. It was an incredible sight, the 6m long whale silently gliding by. Over the next hour the whale made another nine passes, allowing me to closely observe, photograph and study this majestic mammal.
I was not the only one closely studying this whale as in the water with me was Martha Brians, the senior research officer for the Minke Whale Project. Martha was videoing the whale with a special rig to determine the size of the whale and also record the distinctive patterns and scars that help to identify individual whales. The research project, with assistance from charter boats like Spirit of Freedom, has been on-going for almost 30 years and shedding a little light on these mysterious cetaceans.
All too soon the encountered ended, and it was time for another great dive at Steve’s Bommie. Heading further north we had brilliant dives at Google Gardens and Challenger Bay. Another dwarf minke whale was spotted, but it didn’t come in to play. On some trips two, four or a dozen whales can come in to circle the boat, and often snorkelers exit the water cold and tired before the whales have lost interest.
The next day we dived a dwarf minke whale hotspot, Lighthouse Bommie. This towering pinnacle was a great dive with schools of trevally and snapper, reef sharks, turtles and olive sea snakes. Upon surfacing I learnt that two dwarf minke whales had been spotted. Unfortunately, these whales were a little shy, and after an hour in the water they only came by for one quick look.
Our last two dives were at Dynamite Pass and the famous Cod Hole. Both dives were incredible, but the over-friendly potato cod of Cod Hole were the highlight. With our dives finished we headed to Lizard Island for a barbeque dinner, and the next morning reluctantly flew back to Cairns on a wonderful low-level flight.
The Ribbon Reefs offer spectacular diving at anytime of the year, but this remote area of the Great Barrier Reef is extra special over the winter months when the dwarf minke whales come out to play.

Best Restaurants in Mayfair for Your Dining Pleasure
Mayfair is known as one of the most upmarket areas in London, with its elegant boutiques and art galleries. It’s also home to some of the top restaurants in the capital, ranging from casual all-day eateries to Michelin starred fine dining. We’re sharing the best restaurants in Mayfair, London which are personal favourites. Let us know which ones you’d add to this list in the comments below.
Best Restaurants in Mayfair
Tokimeite is one of the top Japanese restaurants in Mayfair. Located on chic Conduit Street, it’s a memorable dining experience. In Japan, chef Yoshihiro Murata has 3 Michelin starred restaurants, including the three Michelin star Kikunoi in Kyoto. For an authentic taste of Japan, try the omakase menu, meaning that you tell the chef what you like and he’ll surprise you.
Ella Canta is a great choice for Mexican cuisine. Renowned chef Martha Ortiz has come up with a creative menu that’s strong on flavour, in a very glamorous setting within the Intercontinental Hotel Park Lane. Staff are skilled at explaining the dishes and wine list. They’ll also rustle up some delicious cocktails including the signature margaritas. The red snapper is particularly good or if you’re feeling adventurous, try the gold grasshoppers!
Also at the Intercontinental, Theo Randall  is one of the top Italian restaurants in Mayfair. Celebrating 10 years, the dining room has a fresh new look but the quality of the produce remains unchanged. We highly recommend the bottomless bruch, with a huge array of dishes to choose from.
Sketch is a quirky 2 Michelin starred restaurant in Mayfair by French chef Pierre Gagnaire and restaurateur Mazouz. From the Gallery with its artworks by David Shrigley to the Lecture Room and Library with its fine dining menu, the decor is as impressive as the food. Even the pod-shaped toilets are like something out of a scif-fi film.
Flemings Hotel Mayfair do fantastic afternoon tea created by Shaun Rankin in their stylish tea room. There’s a good selection of teas by The East India Company, including the hotel’s own blend. For fine dining, Ormer at Shaun Rankin is popular – we haven’t personally tried it but certainly enjoyed Ormer, Jersey.
Kai Mayfair is a chic restarurant on South Audley Street that is known for its liberated Chinese cooking. It’s held a Michelin star since 2009 for its authentic yet contemporary dishes.
Sexy Fish is an inimitable place to see and be seen, thanks to its striking decor with artworks by Damien Hirst and Frank Gehry. Designed by Martin Brudnizki, this Berkeley Square favourite is always great fun. The food is Asian inspired, with an extensive menu of sashimi, sushi, seafood and meat cooked on a Robata grill.
Nearby on Berkeley Street, Park Chinois is one of the best restaurants in Mayfair for dim sum. Recreating the opulence of the 1930s, they actually have their own in-house theatre company who host live entertainment. Restaurateur Alan Yau knows a thing or two about creating the right ambiance and it’s a very relaxing place. Try the roast duck or book in for afternoon tea with live music.
Iconic Mayfair restaurant The Square recently reopened on Bruton Street. Husband and wife team Clément Leroy and Aya Tamura are now at the helm. The Square is showcasing some of their favourite seasonal ingredients such as crisp red mullet with graffiti aubergine, shiitake and Sarawak pepper,  and salt-baked pineapple with kombu, coconut and salted butter ice cream.
The Dorchester Grill is a perennial favourite on Park Lane, serving seasonal British cuisine in its stylish dining room. Since opening in 1931, it became known for grilled food yet its blue lobster chowder and sweet soufflé menu are also popular. Executive chef Guillaume Katola creates elegant dishes in the restaurant designed by Bruno Moinard. There’s a hand blown Murano glass chandelier and pivoting wall panels to give a different ambiance from day to evening.
Caviar House & Prunier is not only known for its delicious caviar. Its also a great place for smoked salmon of many different kinds and Tsarine Champagne, one of the best we’ve tasted. The Piccadilly flagship store is a haven of calm in bustling Mayfair.
We hope that this list of our favourite restaurants in Mayfair has whetted your appetite! Other top restaurants in Mayfair are Pollen Street Social, Goodmans Mayfair, El Pirata and Browns. Pin this for later if you’ve found it useful or share with friends. What Mayfair restaurants would you add to the list? Which of these dishes appeals to you the most?

Land based Snapper fishing: Snapper are the most highly sought fish, particularly around Port Phillip Bay, among recreational beach and pier fishers. Although land-based snapper fishing isn’t the easiest of tasks, especially when attempting to cast into a 20-knot head wind, they tend to turn up unexpectedly at times and places that surprise many anglers. Every year snapper are caught from piers, jetties, breakwaters, beaches and rock ledges. Mt Martha, Mornington Pier, Mordiallic Pier, Cowes Pier and Beaumaris Bay Jetty are just some of the land based locations. Snapper Tip: Bait and Hook Size: The hook size is dictated by bait size, not the size of the fish you are after!
