I’m not sure when exactly this happened, but I think it’s clear that the aro community really is a community, now.

For the longest time I’ve felt like we were still in stasis, not quite there; a proto-community, yes, but not quite a community. But we have more history now to lean back on, more of each other to talk to and laugh with and cry with and learn from. More people that’ll go forward and make a part of modern aro history. More people that believe us, believe in us, will stand with us if we ask them.

I wouldn’t consider myself an aro elder yet, though each year I’m surprised at how long aromanticism has been a part of my life, how long I’ve been free of doubt or insecurity about my aromanticism, how far we’ve come since I was questioning. Then again, when I was questioning, some of the people I looked up to for guidance were probably close to the age I am now, so I might be there sooner than I think.

And, I’m so so hopeful for all aros, young or old, new or not, because we’ve come so far. Day by day, progress is slow (and yes, it’s unfair, it should be so much faster), but looking back it feels fast. We are our own role models, the people we look up to for guidance. We carve our own path through life, making things up as we go. I used to find that terrifying, because I had no idea what the future would bring. But it’s actually amazing, because I can ignore all these silly “rules” and guidelines about what my life should be, and instead ask, “what do I want my life to be?”

Younger me, you have no idea how awesome your future is gonna be. I’m sorry about the pain and hardship you’ll go through first; it won’t be fair and you shouldn’t have to deal with it. But you’ll make it through, and one day you’ll be me. I can’t wait for you to get here.

I figured out a day or two ago that SSO Ridethrough still exists. The unique domain name just expired, so it's back to using a wordpress url, which is why a bunch of the old links don't work

So if you guys want to see the Old Quest Dialogue (like 2018 and earlier), look for ssoridethrough.wordpress.com (not linking it directly because we all know tumblr can be weird about links). If a link on the site doesn't work trying the search function instead, so far it's worked for me.

to get it out of the way, TRIKARANOS will always be free to read and there will NOT be an early access tier, but I'll probably start talking about patreon more as a way to support it (& also me because I have. bills to pay.)

I'm still writing it, but I've started drawing the first chapter, altho it won't be done until....the end of october, maybe sometime early november. this comic doesn't have a set schedule or release. what it DOES have is it's own blog!

I can't and won't leave tumblr. because there's nowhere else really to post art where it can have engagement besides this site, Twitter, and instagram

and sadly all those avenues don't have artists' best interest in mind. but given that commissions and sharing art on social platforms is my only way of making any income

I'll be glazing and using nightshade on my art (I've also opted out of the scraping thru settings), and I'll still be posting, knowing that there's a risk

it's just saddening it's going in this direction. so I ask ppl to support REAL LIVING artists on here, Twitter (who is also scraping for ai), Instagram, and anywhere else because it feels bleak for us

With the resurgence of people becoming interested in setting up their own websites and platforms, one thing I'd encourage people to look into is something called "static site generators." If you're looking to stand up a really simple site without a lot of dynamic content, this is probably the easiest way to do so.

Static-site generators allow you to automate the development of html pages that are ready to serve. The biggest difference between static sites and dynamic sites is that the latter cobbles together the page your users see by pulling all sorts of data from databases upon request time. In contrast, static sites allow you to serve ready-made html pages, making them much faster, secure, and cheaper to host.

(You do need to know a bit of back-end programming to run some simple commands and setup configuration files, but if you're already dabbling in HTML, CSS, and JS, I'm guessing you're up for the challenge.)

The process of updating your website will be quite different than if you're used to platforms like Wordpress or Weebly. But if you're okay with using markdown editors and syncing your files manually, the amount of control you get back over your own content is totally worth it. There are also a lot of plugins and resources already out there to make the experience much smoother.

Not in a disability blog capacity, no. And for the time being will probably stay that way.

I use this blog as a disability journal so I would need the following things:

Easy to open/get into on my phone and make a post on without a lot of fiddly bits. Does not require desktop or logging in through browser

Primarily text-based, nice if allows the occasional photo but isn't photo-centric

No character limit, but also not necessarily forcing me into longform blogging

Relative amounts of privacy (as in, is not going to ask me for my phone number and full name to join, does not sync my contacts or show me people close to my location despite my location being turned off)

Allows me to look back over my own acct with some sort of coherent tagging/organizational system (big reason I have this journal is due to memory issues)

Allows some sort of pinned post or separate page for various info I want to keep handy

Acct is visible when not logged in (this is going to sound very stupid but I have locked myself out of numerous accounts over the years and have lost not just the acct but also what I posted on there because I couldn't see it while logged out)

This knocks out a LOT of platforms. I've tried quite a lot of sites and would be willing to try more but it's difficult to find one that hits all these.
