Things have changed.
On the afternoon of the 14th of September, at a roughly estimated 14-15 years of age, Lilith was taken to the vet for the last time.
You may wonder why we still have this fundraiser up. It was never about having enough funds to care for her, but rather, paying off the costs for her care that we had already accrued. As I said in the original version of this post before the edit, just because she's gone, it doesn't mean that the debt also disappears. As such, the post will continue to be spread as normal, until all of the debt is cleared.
I will be queuing this to post multiple times a day for the next several days, and will continue to do so so long as it is relevant. I do not particularly care if this bothers anyone; you don't have to look at it if you don't want to. It's easy enough to ignore if you have XKit or whatever; I just ask that you reblog it at least once if you plan on never having to see it again.

Please bear with me as I've never had to make a post like this before.
My best friend is in need of serious financial aid in regards to her gorgeous kitty, Sasha. The whole story can be found on the GoFundMe, but I'll give you a short summary:
Upon a visit to the vet to get what they thought was an injury looked at, they were told it was actually bone cancer. Injuries can sometimes "aggravate" cancers like this, but at the same time, it might be the reason why they caught it when they did, as she wasn't showing any symptoms before this injury.
Due to the insane medical prices in the US, this really is a case of if they can't get the amputation paid for, then they will have to strongly consider putting Sasha down which is devastating in itself but especially when they've had her since she was a kitten & she's 14 now! Funds will either go towards getting the amputation sorted as well as all the aftercare for that, or just to keep her as comfortable as possible for her final weeks with us. It's really sad that any life on Earth can be cut short all because of lack of funds.
Of course, if you're reading this and have no means to help financially then that's okay! But please consider reblogging & sharing around so hopefully we can find some people who are willing/able to help with this.
I'm aware there are A LOT of fake posts for GoFundMe's, especially regarding cats and animals. I'm sure once my friend has printed medical bills she'll be happy to post them on the GoFundMe page as well. But again, I understand the weariness regarding these posts so I totally understand if people aren't comfortable donating, but at this point, she has no choice but to ask for help with this, so please consider reblogging at least!

Very unfortunate news, one of our foxes seems to have sadly contracted mange.
If you are unaware, mange is a skin disease caused by mites burrowing into the skin and laying eggs, and the life cycle repeating. It causes hair loss (which can be seen on the tail, face, and legs), extreme scabbing to the skin (which you can see on the face). In later stages it can cause complete hair loss, abnormal behavior such as lethargy and being active during times they normally wouldn't.
Mange can technically be treated, though it is difficult. The main way is through oral or injectable anti-parasitic drugs. The problem is catching the animal before the disease gets too far along.
It's also important to note:
humans and pets can contract certain types of mange, though it is easily treated with anti-parasitics since you have the subject of the disease with you.
Mange is very contagious, usually through direct contact, but also from something like an animal wandering into the affected animals den. The mites can live off the original host for up to a week, letting them find a new host.
If you suspect an animal has mange call your local wildlife center, or the equivalent to where you live. It's very important to stop the spread before it gets out of hand and affects other species.

This hen is a great example of what a certain species of mite can do to a hen.
Most people would see this hen and think that maybe she was just a rooster's favorite or getting picked on but there are some clues that tell us this is not the case and what might actually be causing the problem.
1- This hen does not live with a rooster or cockerel.
2- This is happening during spring.
2- The hen's feathers look downy and rough, if you look closely the feathers are actually snapped in half.
3- The bald patches are showing redness and scabs
4- No parasite eggs were found.
5- Her head feathers around her comb look much better compared to her other feathers, if she was being bullied or over mated this would be one of the first places she would lose feathers.
6- Her feet are also showing signs of irritation.
So basically, these are all signs of Depluming mites. They are a bit different from other species of mite because it's rare to find them on the skin, and they give live birth, so it can be difficult to identify them as a problem. They burrow into the skin and into the feather shafts, which makes it difficult for the topical application of medication to deal with them as well. Without knowing what they are, they can be incredibly hard to treat, even avoiding showing up in skin scrapes and other tests. The only "nice" thing about these mites is that they can only spread through direct contact (usually infestions start due to contact with wild birds), so it's easy to isolate infested flock members.
The treatment for depluming mites is usually something like Ivermectin given orally along with topical medications (pesticides) and offering dust batheing material that is harmful to the mites such as wood ash mixed with DE. Large outbreaks or treatment resistant infestations should have the help of a chicken savy vet to treat.

Tiny Tim seems more comfortable/in less pain, but his appetite is still lacking
I thought he had a few kibbles last night, but now I think maybe he only sniffed them. I tried to give him wet food and he wouldn't go near it. I put a bit on my finger and let him sniff it, and it made him gag.
Today I busted out the Temptations treats, cuz they're his favorite. He sniffed them, and seemed uninterested - but! He didn't gag. Progress??
The vet said not to panic about him not eating because it's only been one day. If he isn't eating by tomorrow night, then we'll worry. But after class tonight I am planning to (on the vet's suggestion) offer him a little smorgasbord of different foods. We have 4 different flavors of wet food, and maybe I'll steal a bit of Pekoe's urinary health kibble too, so he has more than one dry option. I'll put a little of each thing in different dishes and see if he goes for anything. Worth a shot.
He had his gabapentin dose around noon, and seems to be working on sleeping it off now.
Meanwhile, Leon cannot comprehend what is going on with Tim. This doesn't smell like Tim. Where is Tim? This isn't Tim
And Leon hisses at him and avoids him. He goes in the hallway and yells at the door as if he thinks Tim is actually outside. He even dashed out to the patio when Jon came back from an errand this morning, which is very unlike him.
I hope that as Tiny Tim starts feeling better we'll be able to give him a little bath to remove any remaining vet smell and uh... purulent material, so he'll smell like himself again, and then maybe Leon will come around.
For now I gotta get some studying done because I missed class last night and can't afford to fall any further behind, but Tim is resting only a few feet away and I am keeping an eye on him

Thanks for reading. Here's a pic from the other day when he wasn't sick yet. Manifesting healthy Tim energy with this

A mystery respiratory illness has been spreading across the country recently which affects dogs. It begins with a cough and can progress to pneumonia. The disease does not respond well to antibiotics. It is apparently spread by contact from other canines. It's wise to limit communal contact with other dogs, such as dog parks and shared water bowls. The screenshot is from Today.com. PLEASE frens SHARE this and tell anyone you know who owns a dog!!!

Lilypad gets rabies (my commissions are always open, info in pinned)
sorry 😔
Elaboration below the cut
1 day: Lilypad gets bitten by a raccoon, the wound is clean and uninfected, it doesn't hurt much.
15 days: Lilypad always seems tired, and she's warmer than she ought to be, maybe it's just whitecough? 24 days: Lilypad hasn't been sleeping much, she's starting to see things, she hardly even recognizes her own clanmates anymore. Her fever is worse. Catmint isn't helping... What is this? 36 days: She's foaming at the mouth and aggressive, it's like she doesn't know where she is... RabbitClan's never seen anything like this. They sent someone to ask the barn cats a few days ago but they didn't know either. 36 days: She tried to attack someone, her clanmates tried to stop her but they ended up having to kill her, they hope she's happy in StarClan.

Kilgore gave us quite a scare - he had to have a week-long stay in the hospital due to undiagnosed asthma and subsequent pneumonia. He's back home now and recovering well. We have some photos under the read more because he's sick and there's a few hospital shots, but rest assured he's doing a lot better now:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He had some breathing issues off and on the past two months. The vet couldn't find anything on xrays, ultrasounds, or a blood test. Pain meds cleared up the problem every time, so we figured it was pain. However after the third time with worse symptoms we took him into the emergency vet.
He was in bad shape so tests progressed from least to most invasive. After a few days of testing and cultures it was determined to be pneumonia caused by an underlying asthma problem. Asthma in cats is quite rare, and pneumonia is also quite rare. If your cat has mysterious respiratory issues, ask your vet if you can get a tracheal wash test to determine the issue sooner rather than later! It may be expensive and invasive but it's what finally determined the culprit.
Tumblr media
He turned the corner and started getting better on Thursday. Antibiotics and steroids finally started clearing his lungs and he was back on solid food after days on IV. He started charming the vet techs as well, so we knew our little baby was getting better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's back home with a feeding tube mostly for meds, as he's having no issues with solid foods but he's quite the fussy cat when it comes to meds. A few spots shaved bare from tubes and xrays, but they'll grow back. His sister Zouzou is a little bitter that she has to share the space again but she'll get over it.
It was a tough week but we're so happy to have him back home.

Felt soooo bad for Flan last night, she had managed to get the shed off of the most of her body after we helped with her face, but after an additional 24 hours and two saunas, we had to help out with her toes and such, plus we needed to have a look at her eye and flush it a bit. And on top of it all, she'd apparently bit herself in the tail during shedding, so when we came to get the skin off she started bleeding a little and I absolutely panicked thinking it was our fault (but upon flushing and disinfecting with reptile-safe wound cleaner, we could clearly see the little dotted marks from her tiny teeth) 😩 We're still not sure if we're getting anywhere with her eye, she definitely did get the new shed/cap off herself, but it's almost like it's actually her eyelid that's more affected than the eye now hhhh.
She's really splooting down onto the heat for naps recently (she likes her heat mat a little bit hotter than the others, 32-33°c instead of 31-32°, but the ambient temperature has been going down recently as the weather cools).
Tumblr media
I'm adding a cut here, for long post reasons. More in-depth info about the current situation.
Basically, the next step if we're not able to work it out ourselves, would be to take her in to the vet to put her under to really get in there, but we're not very confident that she would actually survive that. So between digging into info, getting help and advice from an admin from Geckos Unlimited, observing her at home and attempting various treatments (we now know it's not an infection, or the antibiotic drops would've helped, and after seeing the vet apply dye, we know it's not a cut or an ulcer), we are also really desperate to leave her alone as much as possible. It's gotten more difficult for us to get a good look at her eye, because she's caught on, and now closes them whenever she sees us. Obviously yesterday we had to help her out, and flush her eye, so now we wait ~again~ and cross our fingers once more.
All in all, the things we've been doing, include:
Keeping her humid hide moist
Keeping a paper towel sauna with an opening in the tank that she can go in and out voluntarily
Keeping a small dish with moist cotton on the warm side to increase humidity (conveniently, she likes laying her face right on top of it)
Adding vitamin drops with Vitamin A and retinol in her water dish
Gut loading feeders with lots of vegetables and insect food formula
Giving her a full-on sauna every 3-4 days in an (aerated) feeder tub by putting wet paper towel into the tub, closing the lid, and placing it over the heat mat so it steams up with condensation (she goes in for 10-15 minutes)
Keeping a close look on her eye
Note any changes in her condition
Flushing her eye with saline as needed (in attempts to flush away foreign objects and/or eye goop)
If you have any other additional advice or anything (would something like a video of the eye help?), please let us know.
Took her to the vet, they saw the swelling but she wouldn't open her eye after having dye put into it, and it looked a bit 'sticky' so we did a course of antibiotic eye drops. When we came back home, we were able to see her eye properly while the dye was still there, and confirm there were no cuts or marks on it
Adding a rough rock to rub on, in addition to various cork bark
She's mad grumpy lately but I can't blame her!

So, I got ahold of a vet this morning.
A friend of my husbands grandma, so she made time for a phone call.
She says without a physical examination, it sounds like Hera is just old and approaching her last days.
So, still trying to get her into the vet, but if I can’t find a place with an opening, just making her comfortable.

Tiny Tim seems to be getting some of his strength back. Giving him his morning gabapentin was an epic struggle just now. He fought and growled and twisted
The antibiotics must be starting to do their job

This is SO scary frens. Apparently there is a mystery respiratory illness spreading across the country affecting dogs. I just heard about it and have been reading some articles. It seems to be spreading from contact with other dogs so limiting exposure to other canines for a while might be best for your pet. Just Google "mystery canine respiratory illness" to find news regarding this.

Hey guys this fox rescue has been hit hard by the chemical train that derailed in Ohio. It’s really close to the disaster site and the future is going to be rough there for a while so I thought I’d spread this around in case anyone else wanted to help. It also has some wolf dogs and coyotes.
