Gary Larson's stuff should be way more popular on here IMO. I get that he's mainly known for "Cow Tools" (and rightly so) but the man's a shitposting machine with more bangers than I can count.
I’m back babyyyy - my last post of this got a weirdly large number of likes so here’s season 2, I guess. My streak of finding random historical references in rtte continues apparently:
Returning for the random US history references is this: Astrid’s speech to the auxiliary riders in Team Astrid (2x1) is almost word for word of the Rifleman’s Creed, a WWII speech given my General William H. Rupertus of the U.S. Marine Corps so I guess the streak of US history related facts continue
The Twins hug each other for the first time ever on screen in the whole franchise in Bad Moon Rising (2x4)
In real life both Tuff and Snotlout would have died because of the events of Bad Moon Rising - Tuff from the wolf bite and Snotlout from his several bites one of which was a sea snake which are apparently VERY venomous and almost impossible to cure
Ruffnut’s middle name is Eugene
There are several references to classic movies in this season: the first is the ropes being soaked in nightmare gel in Edge of Disaster (2x9) while the Hunters are climbing up them is a reference to Home Alone when Kevin does this with kerosene
In the same episode Tuff says the line "We've been expecting you” while petting Chicken which is a direct copy of a scene and line in James Bond
In A Time to Skrill Hiccup (2x11) mentions the Dragon Hunters have a new net launcher which are exactly the same design as the one Eret uses in httyd2
(Is it an abomination to put these two in bright yellow and green? Yes. Did I do it anyway because I'm an aussie and wanted to see them in the Matildas colours? YEP.)
luke wrote a song for his oldest brother!! and idk I feel like we hear more about jack as a fandom (maybe he’s more active on socials idk) but wasn’t ben the one who learned the guitar and inspired luke to take it up?? anyway just thinking about the eldest/youngest sibling bond and how you’re not super close in age as kids but you get older and that matters less and you start to realise all the things you have in common and the different perspectives you have on childhood memories and it’s just really special
ugh i had this other 8th year fic i was working on that i loved! they were doing like independent schooling out of grimmauld place bc hogwarts was still too destroyed to go back to and they wanted to get on with their lives and figured their best chance of passing their NEWTs was to study together, so they formed a little school. but it kinda turned out to be more about hermione and i couldn't figure out how to steer it back toward drarry so i stopped working on it.
Very early discussions I've had with one particular person about the voice has been like, she's very deep in archaeology circles and Aboriginal heritage circles and has lots of close connections with indigenous people, and she straight up was going to vote no because the indigenous people she spoke to in the very early days of the campaign were not supportive of it. More recently she's changed to being vague about her voting and I just think like, if the situation is that the indigenous people she originally talked to who were opposed to it have since been informed and now support the voice, she is also allowed to change her position. It doesn't have to be a secret. She's been saying this whole time to get educated and be informed and that's what's happening. She can just be like hey over time the people who i initially spoke with who didn't support it, now do, and in solidarity I'll vote yes with them. Like. It's literally that simple
I've been having brain rot pertaining to Ireland and the pacific siblings. Particularly not historical ones cause hggnnn I need to write something cute anyway; here's some hc on when they most often call her mom/mum
Canada - So, Matthieu calls Molly mom the least often, but when he does it's usually in the middle of nervous breakdowns when he just really needs a hug and someone to tell him it's okay. It's also not uncommon for him to say 'I want my mom' when she's not around and he's having a tough time.
USA - Alfred calls Molly mom the second most (just after Oz) and his are a little more common and off handed; but he probably does it most when she's trying to give him some advice or telling him to do something. Y'know the whining 'but mooommmmmm' usually with the response of 'Alfred Farley Jones don't use that tone with me'
Australia - Jack does it the most often! almost to the point of using Aunty Molly and mum interchangeably. He does it a lot though when he's tired, like when he's just woken up and offhanded 'good morning mum' or when he's fallen asleep on the couch and she wakes him up to tell him to go to bed.
New Zealand - Liam does it way less than Al and Jack but more than Mattie, his is also far less 'on accident'; he calls her mum when aunt doesn't seem like a close enough title. So let's say it his birthday and she gave him a very personal gift, or he's having a time and she offers some life altering advice he'll switch to mum to show her that he does really appreciate it.
survivors of h-1: the usual low-key subnautica horror story (man vs unknown environment), the stressful central position of coordinating with the other groups but otherwise kind of chill, cryptid etho, mild political intrigue, iskall climbs mountains for fun, BDubs gets into his brutalist era via accidental alien possession
survivors of h-2: the minds of mortals were not meant to weather this endless snow and ice. there is no security in any direction for the ice is filled with unknown and ever-shifting tunnels inhabited by creatures who think us nothing more than gnats. but there is a greater threat, within our own bodies, stalking our veins and nerves like those creatures in the ice. and we are just as small there, just as helpless. we are nothing but toys for this land to play with and ruin until we are unrecognizable. the only option is to give ourselves over to instinct and slay that which would slay us first, even if it costs our selves. RED WINTER IS COMING.
survivors of h-3: the depths of the ocean really aren't so different from the depths of space. there's nothing nearby, you can't go outside without very specialized equipment, you feel very small, the usual. the difference is that the scanners pick up life forms instead of asteroids, and when you look out into the black and see points of light, you know you're actually seeing eyes, staring right back at you.
