oh man I just read this new book called shark heart about a newly married man who is recently diagnosed with a condition where he’s beginning to turn into a shark and he then has to navigate his relationship with his wife as he goes through these changes. I so naively expected something fun silly and weird since it’s a more surreal premise, but instead I got hit with such a huge emotional gut punch that I don’t think I’ll recover from

Do you know how much my heart just got ripped apart by Emily Habeck's "Shark Heart"? I was expecting a silly shark romance story but what I got was a heartcrushing meditation on love and humanity versus personhood and moving on after tragedy. I CRIED THROUGH A GOOD THIRD OF IT. Gods, what a fantastic book.

The Storygraph wrap-up is an incredible feature, and the mood tracker might be my favorite part. What was bringing me down in October? I only read three books that month: Emily Habeck's Shark Heart, which was phenomenal and everyone should read it; Christopher Logue's War Music, which I've read before and will reread again; and Britney Spears's memoir, which was heartbreaking at times. But like Britney, we will rise again in 2024. What's on your reading list? Join me on The Storygraph, it is much more chill than Goodreads.

This was…such a trip. A poetic and beautiful trip, but still a trip! A newly married man who is slowly turning into a shark? The story is as bizarre as the concept, but it was so beautifully written. I’ve never read anything like it before.
I felt like this book was a float down a lazy river. It wasn’t the fastest paced, but it was enjoyable and the scenery was beautiful if abstract.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Have you read Shark Heart by Emily Habeck? If so, what did you think?

Hot take, I really don’t think we should assign human morals onto animals and call them bad or evil. Fishblr has internalised this idea really well with sharks, and I think that’s good! Sharks don’t deserve all the fearmongering they suffer from in media. But… can we please remember to extend this to other animals too? Even to intelligent animals like dolphins (most commonly bottlenose dolphins) and orcas. It seems to be a counter to pop culture’s tendency to show dolphins as complete angels when they partake in some messed up things, but like…. Dolphins are still animals? They may be able to recognize themselves in mirrors and they may have language and culture and know how to use tools but their intelligence is still on the level of a human child (and how empathetic are those!!??). I see people talk about how evil dolphins are but I never see people talking about other animals the same way, like, why aren’t sea otters and their “evilness” the topic of discussion? :/

Fun fact: Hammerhead sharks are exceptional at playing hide-and-sea-k. 🙈🏃
A hammerhead’s eyes are located at the extreme ends of its very wide head — giving it a fintastic field of vision. They can see above, below, and even behind them! 👀
If that wasn’t enough of an advantage, they also have special electroreceptors (called ampullae of Lorenzini) that can sense weak electrical fields created by the muscular movements of prey — even one as invisible as the beating heart of an animal hidden in the sand.
Next time you’re playing a game of hide and seek, manifest your inner hammerhead shark to win!

next time you make baseless claims about how scary sharks are, look at a salmon shark.
