I know we haven’t talked in a while but seeing you reblog pjo show content gave me an ‘Aha’ moment. The scene of where Percy tricks Annabeth and pushes her to safety in episode 4 has been bugging me the whole day. It reminded of something but I didn’t know what, but seeing you reblog that specific scene made me realize what it reminded me of. Its Shallura from the second last episode of the first season. Allura throwing Shiro to safety while she got captured. That’s what the scene of Annabeth and Percy reminds me of. The PARALLELS!!! And now i am overwhelmed with feelings.
Oh Shallura - they will have always deserved better </3 And I do always love ships where both halves are basically competing over who can sacrifice themselves for each other
But honestly all I could see watching that scene - from the injury to the reasoning to Annabeth's proposed sacrifice to Percy's panicked little head shake - was Rayla and Callum from The Dragon Prince down to a T. Which is funny, because Rayllum has always very much reminded me of a less mature (at first) form of Shallura anyway, especially in the first few seasons
But yeah the Percabeth switch scene specifically made me think of Rayla and Callum's scene in Season Two in which she's going to possibly die saving/defending a downed dragon from dark magic dissection, and Callum has this panicked little head shake as well
Interspersed with Rayla saying things like "It doesn't matter what happens to me. Live or die, this dragon goes home" because. we love an overly self sacrificial elf girl with white hair (and just to be clear, this dragon is a Total Stranger to her) and Callum drawing her because he's Worried and an Artiste
Before he goes after her and well, takes the blow, shall we say, by uh, permanently corrupting his soul with dark magic
Callum also winds up having a dark predecessor (the way Shiro did with Zarkon) and arcs surrounding agency, and Rayla comes to help him get to safety after he collapses post-spell. Angry at him, but ultimately concerned/worried
Even though TDP is just like. a Really Good fucking tv show for Every Conceivable Reason (plot, characters, development, queer rep, these two) but I do have a fondness for how these two continue to grow in their attempts to out-devotion each other with shit like "I trust her. Unconditionally" and "the best thing I ever had: you"

Do you ever think about how Shiro and Allura's colors - Black and Pink - are both mourning colors from their respective worlds and how of all the Paladins they're probably the two who have suffered and lost the most? And how it's just one more way they parallel each other on top of being co-leaders, and pillars of strength for their team? How they wear colors of sorrow but more than anyone else on the team they're the ones who hide and push away their feelings most?

'My previous otp had a wonderfully supportive dynamic on a show where character’s didn’t Talk to each other, and they didn’t end up together and worse of all, took eight seasons, six of which were terrible, to end up both smiling at each other at the same time' From your recent post about the Rayllum fandom post-s2 - I was just wondering which OTP this was?
Shiro and Allura from Voltron: Legendary Defender. They were co-leaders in season one and two and had some 👀 moments, in addition to him being the only one who could match her dedication and skill level, and like... Her sacrificing herself on a mission to save him; him putting everything on the line to get her back even though he’s the most aware of the danger as a former prisoner. A soft hand hold with him telling her to rest, yelling each other’s names in battle. She wears mourning armour for him. Later on, she carried his soul in her body before reviving and pouring a bit of her energy back into him (the same thing that happened to a married couple earlier in the show in the exact same manner). She used the last thing she has from her mother to build him an arm. He helped her down from a truck with a Pride and Prejudice esque handhold. The audio description when she goes to sacrifice herself at the end of the show (for bullshit reasons) describes her hugging everyone else, but when it comes to Shiro, it says “They embrace.” She’s the only person we ever see him cry over (not even over his ex fiancee)???

Shallura Angst Week - Day 3: Black/Breathe
The source of their pain may be different but they share a similar cure.

All he could do was breathe, a long deep intake; hold and release. He had to calm down, but his usual method didn’t seem to be working.
As his heartrate refused to come down, Shiro gave up on sitting still and got up to pace his room. Moving to the door and back to the opposite end of his small living quarters. According the calculations he was currently running through his mind, the mission to destroy Zarkon’s central command was near. He had felt for sure that he was ready for this, but now the hour was upon him, he felt anxious and perhaps even frightened. A feeling that scared him more.
He couldn’t get the last fight he had with Zarkon out of his head. Fighting on the astral plane was immensely surreal. His movements were sloppy, and he took a beating that felt all too real. Black had saved him, but just before that, Zarkon’s grip on his neck left a haunting presence, he could still feel those clawed fingers scrape the nape of his neck. He brushed his own hand over the offending area and shuddered.
To die in the astral plane, would have meant dying for real. That was something he knew was not prepared for, even with his memory being as blank as it was, he knew a will to survive must have helped him during his captivity. However, to also be known as the ‘Champion’, what horrid things must he have done in process for survival to get such a title?
He felt himself on the verge of panic, as he always felt when his imagination tried to replace his memory. He had to leave this room now, he felt suffocated.

Allura turned in her bed for what felt like the 100th time that night. Her insomnia for the past few days had gotten increasingly worse since the completion of the teleduv. It was now all up to her to power the engine, and while powering the castle came as easy as blinking, the added responsibly to do a job well done had her eyes drying out. She had assured Coran every time he asked that she was ready and prepared. This had to be the fated reason she was put into stasis. Her knowledge of alchemy was limited, but she had learned enough from her father to at least do this.
Her father, the last thing she remembered. Staring into his eyes and seeing orange flames dance in them. She had blinked and 10,000 years passed. Sleep never came easy since then, she would be afraid to wake up and find more years had passed. That she had failed again to rally the force of Voltron and her new impromptu family was turned to ash like her old one. With such thoughts swirling around her head, she felt her lungs struggling for air.

They found each other in the lounge, as it became their custom. Each taking a seat on opposite ends of the large semi-circle sofa. They talked of many things, but never about the things that really brought them to this place. Those thoughts seemed to disappear the moment they were in the other’s presence. They talked about the funny things the other paladins did and said. They exchanged cultures, laughing at the other’s baffled expressions. They talked until they forgot their pains. They talked till they no longer had to force themselves to breathe.

A detail I noticed watching through s6 again.
Here’s Krolia’s reaction when she finds out that Keith’s dad died (and Keith had to go through his death alone):
In the actual animation, her eyes are shaking. She’s sweating, and she looks pretty devastated.
Contrast with Shiro’s reaction when the castleship got hit with its own ray reflected at the end of s2:
His eyes are also shaking here, and you can see sweat on the side of his face. He looks pretty devastated also, and this is even preempted by his shouting “Allura!” right before this scene.
They’re exactly paralleled scenes.
Wait, you say, the other paladins were pretty devastated when the castleship was hit, too. Yeah, they were:

Of all of them, Pidge’s eyes are also shaking, and she had tears in them--she’s the closest one when compared to both Krolia and Shiro’s reactions. Lance’s body most closely resembles Shiro’s, doubling over in grief, but we don’t see any other similar indications between the two.
That, and the fact that Shiro shouts for Allura right before all the rest of the Paladins’ reactions, and then it goes back to Shiro for his reaction, with the shaking eyes and sweat running down his face, all this tells us that this scene we already saw in teh s2 finale? We’re supposed to have that recalled in our minds with the exact same types of scenes for an established couple. When looking at all the reactions between the Paladins and Krolia, Shiro is the only one who truly mirrors her reaction to finding out the man she loved was dead.

Just occurred to me that Allura and Shiro were both pilots pre-Voltron shenanigans; Shiro schooled for it at the Garrison, and Allura, by her own words, has been piloting the castle-ship for half her life, possibly suggesting it may have been an interest or passion of hers rather than a duty or just something she did cuz she could.
Cue me seeing the two of them bonding over their shared love of flying and dreams of exploration (Shiro beyond the Sol system, Allura beyond the far reaches of Altea and its numerous colonies). See them comforting each other as they each remember how the sight of those promising stars was figuratively and literally overtaken by the shadow of the Galran Empire, right before their lives were forever changed. See them helping one another heal and finding that silver lining as they realize that, with Voltron, they’ve managed to live those dreams, after all, even if it’s in a way that’s far more bittersweet than either of them could have imagined. See them rediscovering that lost innocence, that love of the stars without the taint of their traumas.
And then, newly healing, see them sharing their experiences. Shiro may not be able to pilot the castle himself, but Allura can show him what it’s like, how the technique and controls differ between it and piloting a lion. Shiro explains the kinds of vessels he flew in the Garrison and how they work, grinning when Allura comments how primitive they sound. She vows to get Coran to help find them some Altean ship schematics to peruse, and Shiro feels an old, familiar passion (read: nerdism) welling up at the prospect. They bring up the star map on the bridge and Allura shows him old Altean flight paths, drawing them far across the map with a finger. They’re both amused when she indicates Shiro do the same, curious about humanity’s spacefaring history, only to see that history encompassed by a pitiful little line that doesn’t even cross the boundaries of the Sol system. “That is...impressive,” she says, trying for politeness. Her attempt apparently fails as Shiro surprises her with a wide smile.
“You sound a little disappointed, Princess,” he says, one eyebrow lightly arched, a rare tease in his eyes.
“...perhaps a little,” she admits, a touch guiltily. It doesn’t last as Shiro bursts out a laugh, and Allura ultimately gives in to the moment and joins him. And the entire time they’re both thinking and lowkey kind of in awe of the fact that across 10,000 years and millions of lightyears, they’ve found somebody they can connect with in such a way. Literal aliens to one another, and yet here they are, laughing over spacecraft and bonding over a love of the sky.
With time, weeks and months after these conversations begin, Allura and Shiro gradually find their dreams filling with stars again; and for the first time since the loss of her people, since the loss of his past, they don’t get eclipsed by shadows.
