MCU’s Multiverse of Madness vs. VLD
A friend streamed for me Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness today after hearing that it was similar to Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 8, but if s8 were good? So I’ve watched it, and I have thoughts. There are definite similarities, but I’m not sure these are enjoyable similarities, lol. So I’m just thinking out loud about what in the world I just watched...
(Spoilers for the MCU movie and VLD under the cut):
Unsettling Similarities:
A witch woman goes evil and rejects the sanctity of life because she can’t be a mom to the very children she...*checks notes*...previously rejected maternal obligations over in her own backstory (WandaVision, VLD s6), and then decides at some point off-screen that she just can’t live without them? (Did I miss something about Wanda’s character arc into depravity? I feel whiplashed after watching WandaVision?)
It’s a Dr. Strange movie in title, but he’s not the focus in his own movie. It instead is really Wanda’s story and to some degree a totally new character, a magical teenager named America. Similarly, the all-powerful Voltron mecha takes a pretty major backseat to VLD s8 Honerva, her evil mecha, and Altean magic as the final showdown focus in VLD despite Voltron being the title character of the show.
Both shows intentionally push the limits of their rating. They both have an increased tolerance for showing melty bodies and using specific horror tropes compared to previous setup for these characters...and yet the rating is not increased to reflect that update. (For example, while other MCU PG-13 movies swivel away from showing blood or frightening/focused images of decay, it was surprising that this movie focused on Dr. Strange’s decayed body as a center point of the visuals, a monster’s eye being ripped out in a very bloody way, and Wanda consistently covered in blood from her mass murders, with scenes taking inspo from the 1986 movie Alien, which is rated R. Likewise, while VLD’s earlier seasons were not afraid to show skeletons and a couple jump scares, earlier seasons used visual direction to avoid showing an active character’s state of mutilation in death. Meanwhile, s8 just up and shows a mutilated Lotor body on top of the original, living Haggar being sucked dry of life, Mummy style in a flashback. In addition, s8 capitalizes on monsters hunting the team in classic horror-trope fashions, with later seasons in general pulling content from the ages 16+ Voltron comics and the TV-14 GoLion anime, which were rated higher than the VLD show’s rating of Y7.)
Both shows update certain characters to be women of color (a black Captain Marvel, for example), only to kill them off for shock value specifically in a way that is not supported by the worldbuilding for that character. (For example, Captain Marvel suddenly can’t survive a statue falling on her despite this character being one of the most powerful in the MCU, with god-like abilities and the power of foresight? Did I miss something about this variant version? And Allura is supposed to be dead at the end of s8 despite her own life force being connected to a limitless power source, and despite regenerating the multiverse in an area of space-time where life and death don’t even exist as concepts?) I get that beloved fictional characters die in stories sometimes, but damn. If it doesn’t even make sense for that character on top of not making sense for the story’s surrounding context, why are they being killed off?
The men with the noodle hair (Dr. Strange, Lotor) have their bodies used as zombie puppets during a fight scene. (Which, sure, it serves a purpose in either story, but also that’s just…hm. The concept of possessing a dead body was tolerable in Men in Black (1997), but I don’t feel it works under the circumstances in these other shows. At least to VLD s8’s credit, we didn’t see a decayed Meltor actively moving around for himself or talking.)
Both Dr. Strange and Lotor are heavily criticized for their morally gray tactics used to achieve an end of peace, but then the other characters capitalize off of said tactics or even repeat said tactics themselves or agree later that it was the only way.
There are some generally pointless cameos, in reference to Professor X appearing in the MCU (how is he defeated that easily by Wanda after all the crazy stuff he’s put up with in the X-Men universe?) and Merla in VLD s8 (she goes from being Voltron franchise’s ultimate femme fatale supervillain to a loyal sidekick of the shoehorned supervillain?). Like…why even include them, then?
That said, both shows did have some interesting visual direction. Me and my friend felt Multiverse of Madness might have been more enjoyable to watch if it were in 3D, just based on the type of the shots used to capture action. And VLD in general, while having quality issues, still did some pretty cool stuff from a visual perspective and set an animation quality precedence for future reboots of the franchise.
But overall, I’m not...feeling this Multiverse of Madness as a positive successor for VLD’s concepts? The concept of a multiverse is ubiquitous in the science-fiction genre, with the heartbeat of both MoM and VLD s8′s worldbuilding having been previously explored in Michael Moorcock’s ~1960s stories about a multiverse that can be damaged in attempting to travel it. But both shows here feel ultimately anticlimactic in regards to that very concept (in MoM, America magically and unexplainedly obtains control to fulfill Wanda’s demands without multiverse destruction, while in VLD, Allura pulls a deus ex machina with an unprecedented and logically unsupported magical fix to undo the undo-able damage).
I don’t at all begrudge anyone who enjoyed Multiverse of Madness or VLD; in fact, there were things I did enjoy about both. I’m just very fascinated at how both suffer from trying to squeeze life out of a story that’s been stretched beyond its limits.

⚠️ Voltron S6 Spoiler  ⚠️
Soooo....been a long time I wanted to talk about the amazing and heart breaking moment between Shiro and Keith during this season.
It was honnestly, for me, one of the best moment of this Show, my heart was beating like hell when I saw it for the first time because we got like, big reveal, big emotionnal moment and how the épisode end and all : truly great!
but
after watching it it feel like something was lacking, and this is a feeling I got since the beginning of the show.
For me it was a show about a TEAM , a team that will eventually end up feeling like they are family to each others. And we had a lot of “bonding moment” between the characters.
but theses bonding moment where the whole team was here were most of the times “funny” bonding moments (a the party when pidge want to leave, the Show with the bibobi, the DND game) I hardly remember serious, heartbreacking bonding moment with everyone here to support one character.
but I’m not here to make a detailed critic/analysis of the show, I just wanted to show you guys what, FOR ME, would have been the perfect time to show that this show is about a team that is united even in the hardest of times.
So first, everyone is here when discovering The Facility with all the Shiro’s Clones, they are all in shock when seeing it.
Shiro’s Clone arrive, and then, one hell of a fight begin : The voltron Team VS Shiro.
They all try to call out for him, to reason him, talk to him while trying to block his attacks, all of them trying not to hurt him and understand what is going on.
eventually we arrive at the moment when the facility is falling apart, the team got separated from Shiro and Keith, they have their moment of big emotional talking.
The team manage to rejoin Keith on the platform just before the Facility explode.
Shiro fall at the edge of the platform, unconscious because of the blast, keith throw himself so he can catch him before he fall, but he is to heavy for him and Keith get dragged by Shiro.
Lance and Pidge ,with fast reflexes, got hold on Keith’s legs but they got dragged too, with Shiro and keith...
.. They fall into the void.
But Pidge have her bayard, and use it to throw a Grappling Hook to Hunk who catch it in time and hang on as best as he can.
and Hunk succed, he is using all his strenght to keep his friends, his space family, alive. He is the last thing that keep them from falling and he can feel that he begin to slip. With tears in eyes, he hold on tight, as long as he can, while they try to figure out a possible way of getting out of this mess.
but ultimately, with a pained cry, Hunk get dragged by all of them.
and they fall.
they get closer, so everyone can hold on on Shiro, not letting him go, even if maybe it’s a clone, it’s THEIR Shiro.
While looking at their unconscious friend, all of them have a moment where they remember how Shiro got an important impact on their lives.
Like, lance remember that it’s because he admired Shiro that he tried so hard to join the garrison and go into space.
Pidge remember how, because he was friend with matt, she saw him as a kind of big brother too.
Maybe that Shiro got an important impact on hunk's life too, maybe hunk was going to drop out the garison because he feel like he doesn’t matter, but Shiro, seeing him doubting and sad in his corner, help him feel better, and told him how important an engineer is for a team in space.
of courses Keith remember how Shiro saved him and all the canon things we saw.
And at this very moment, we finally understand how Shiro is the CORE of this team, how important he is for all of them. That he is the link between all theses people. and that’s why he is the Black paladin, the head and heart of Voltron.
phew, it’s a long text message (it was hard to write it because english is not my first language) but I really wanted to share it with you (even if my art to illustrate it was totally rushed and not the best art I made), I wish I was better at comic so I could have show it to you as a comic instead of a badly written text.

THE DND EPISODE WAS SO IMPORTANT FOR SHIRO/ KURON THAN WE THINK AND HERE’S WHY
Tumblr media
IT SHOWED KURON WAS FUCKING HUMAN BEING, THAT IT WASN’T AN ACT, AND THAT HE IS STILL SHIRO, HIMSELF, DESPITE IT ALL. HE WANTED TO SPEND HIS TIME OFF WITH THE TEAM, HE WAS ALREADY PLAYING WITH CORAN PIDGE AND HUNK BEFORE ALLURA AND LANCE DECIDED TO JOIN THEM. (Fun side note: Haggar probably watched the whole DnD session through Kuron)
(WARNING LONG POST, MORE SERIOUS META BELOW THE CUT IN REGARDS TO KURON AND SHIRO ARE SEPARATE CHARACTERS)
Let’s begin, excuse the caps, I am very passionate. It’s start with how the DnD game shows off how Kuron is a well rounded human being and an extension of Shiro’s personality, rather than an act
Tumblr media
yes you did Shiro, you died in real life too sorry buddy
KURON HAD A BLAST MAKING HIS OWN CHARACTER FOR THIS GAME, HIS CHARACTER WAS LITERALLY A SELF INSERT WITH HIS REAL NAME TAKASHI SHIROGANE AND HE CHOSE TO BE A PALADIN
Tumblr media
HE PLAYS AS SOMENE WITH VALUES HE TRULY BELIEVES, HE LOVES BEING HIMSELF AND A PALADIN AND DIDN’T WANT TO CHANGE IT FOR A MOMENT, HE CHOSE IT EVERY TIME, HE HAS NO PROBLEM WITH WHO AND WHAT HE IS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THERE’S NOTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD HE’D RATHER BE JUST HIMSELF
Tumblr media
KURON/SHIRO TRULY SEES HIMSELF AS A SHIELD AND WANTS TO PROTECT OTHERS, WHILE ALSO GETTING A CHANCE TO RELAX AND SHOW JUST HOW DORKY HE IS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
LOVES HIS TEAM AND SPENDING TIME LIKE THIS WITH THEM, THIS IS PROBABLY THE LONGEST TIME HE’S SPENT WITH THEM JUST DOING SOMETHING FUN, DND TAKES H O U R S
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HE WANTS TO KEEP DOING STUFF LIKE THIS WITH THE PALADINS HE HAD SUCH A GREAT TIME, PROBABLY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A VERY LONG TIME
Tumblr media
AND THE TEAM LOVE HIM SO MUCH, SO MUCH THEY PLAY GAMES WITH HIM AND HAVE SO MUCH FUN, CORAN EVEN SUGGESTS HOW TO CONTINUE THE CAMPAIGN AFTER SEEING HOW EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY SHIRO LOVED IT SO MUCH
Tumblr media
I THINK MORE OF THE SHIRO WITHIN KURON CAME OUT WHILE HE WAS UNDER HAGGAR’S CONTROL, HE MAY BE A CLONE BUT HE IS STILL SHIRO AND A HUMAN BEING
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE REGRET IN HIS EYES THE MOMENT KEITH FINALLY BROKE THROUGH, FOLLOWED QUICKLY BY ANGER AND FRUSTRATION BECAUSE HE’S STILL FIGHTING UNDER HAGGER’S CONTROL
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SHIRO/KURON’S VOICE WAVERED AND BROKE WHEN HE TOLD KEITH TO STOP FIGHTING THAT IT DIDN’T MATTER ANYMORE BECAUSE THE OTHERS WERE DEAD BECAUSE OF HIM, HE HONESTLY SOUNDED SO BROKEN BENEATH THE ANGER, YOU CAN’T TELL ME HE WASN’T FILLED WITH SO MUCH GUILT AND REGRET FOR WHAT HE’D DONE
IT WAS AS IF HE WAS TRYING TO SAY TO KEITH “WHAT WAS THE POINT FOR US TO KEEP GOING ON IF EVERYONE ELSE, OUR FAMILY, WAS DEAD BECAUSE I FAILED TO PROTECT THEM AND COULDN’T FIGHT BACK HAGGAR’S CONTROL”
Tumblr media
AND THEN WHEN HE FINALLY BROKE THROUGH AND REALITY CAME CRASHING BACK TO WHAT HE’S DONE HE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT HE’D DONE, HE LOOKS AT KEITH WITH SO MUCH REGRET
Tumblr media
Taking a step back for a moment, I have to wonder how Haggar was able to make a spitting replica of Shiro, INCLUDING HIS MEMORIES, Kuron IS Shiro by all accounts, I believe the DnD episode was supposed to prove he had humanity and essentially the soul of Shiro. What I’m thinking is Haggar’s control exploited parts of Shiro’s own personality, negative parts he keeps DEEP AND HIDDEN AWAY FOR NO ONE TO SEE, because he needs to be a shield and protector for the paladins, his family
Tumblr media
The Paladins were the ones on Kuron’s mind while he was dying because he loves them with all his heart, they are his found family and gave him a reason to smile again when he was so close to death, he traveled across the universe to find them again
Tumblr media
Shiro has always been a fighter, he’s fought against the odds and just wants to be free and protect those he loves, but don’t you think after so much pain and suffering, Shiro never had doubts? What if he couldn’t do it? What if he was really going to die no matter what he did? What if the pain never stopped?
This may have been Shiro’s exeriences, but Kuron had them as well. I believe this is what Haggar exploited, those doubts, which made it so difficult for Kuron to break free, until Keith told him he loved him
Tumblr media
Keith did not treat Kuron like a monster
It was still painful for him to see a version of Shiro like this and being forced to fight him. He still saw Shiro in him, even though he knew while he was fighting him he was a clone, they were surrounded by other clones, it’s not hard to miss
Tumblr media
Keith kept holding on even as they fell
Keith still wanted to save him, because he knew Kuron is Shiro and was worth saving, that he is still a human being with emotions and feelings and memories after everything they had gone through
Tumblr media
He wasn’t going to give up on him on the one person who never gave up on him
Tumblr media
If Kuron was not Shiro and just a pawn, he would not have hesitated when Keith told him he loves him
Tumblr media
Another important thing to remember: the Black Lion and Shiro (since his soul is currently with her) rejected Kuron because they knew he was a fake
Tumblr media
That is until the lives of the Paladins and the rebels/refugees were in danger, the moment Kuron begged the Black Lion to trust him again
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Black and Shiro KNEW Kuron was still Shiro and not just a pawn and took that chance to trust him, the Black Lion did not reject him again because they knew they might still be able to have a chance with him
Tumblr media
Kuron is Shiro, he has always been Shiro, Kuron loves the team and they love him because to them he was no different than Shiro, even Shiro and the Black Lion took that chance to trust him
And even though the real Shiro is back, it still felt like we lost a part of Shiro, Kuron could not survive without Haggar, it would seem, but I would like to think when Shiro woke up, he is in a way a combination of Kuron and Shiro since he’d likely have those memories Kuron experienced
Tumblr media
The Shiro who woke up could be both Shiro and Kuron because of their combined memories
Shiro would remember both of their lives since the moment his physical body died, to the moment Kuron first awoke and “escaped” the galra up to the present. Even though Shiro actively did not experience Kuron’s memories, Shiro would still treat them as his own memories because Kuron behaved just as he would have because they are the same person when it comes down to it. Shiro will have a connection to these memories, almost like it was all a dream while at the same time it was like he still experienced it himself. I also believe Shiro, more than anyone, would understand Kuron was a victim just as much as him, along with all the other Shiro clones that were created and are now destroyed.
I think Shiro would mourn that in a way Kuron is “gone”
Kuron, the one who played DnD with the team and truly felt like there was no need to be anyone else but himself even if they were playing pretend, Kuron, who had done the whole Shiro the Hero persona during the Voltron Show, Kuron, who was so happy to see Matt was alive and hugged him when Matt had tried to go for a handshake, Kuron, who joked with Sam about wanting to punch Iverson for him for strapping him to a table when he returned to Earth, and more painfully, Kuron’s escape and journey across space alone. Shiro would not be aware of Kuron’s memories of the escape until his mind and spirit were transferred into Kuron’s body. It wasn’t until then that Shiro would feel the fear and pain Kuron felt in his final thoughts, thinking he’d die never finding the paladins, their found family, until Keith and the Black Lion finally found him.
It also brings up the matter, why did the Black Lion/Shiro decide to find Kuron while he was on the brink of death? That’s because it wasn’t until Kuron was so close to death and the only thing he could think of were the Paladins that his quintessence truly matched Shiro’s. There was also likely the matter that the Black Lion knew Shiro needed a body if he was ever going to return, they just needed to wait for the right time which was when Allura would gain the ability to be able to transfer Shiro’s life to Kuron. It wasn’t until Kuron had proven himself that Shiro and the Black Lion realized Kuron was a human being and not just Haggar’s puppet and spy.
In conclusion, Shiro and Kuron are opposite sides of the same coin
Shiro and Kuron’s arc was amazing and breathtaking since episodes like the DnD one made you actually CARE about Kuron because we truly got to see into his and Shiro’s personalty, that yes, they’re both firm leaders who have to make difficult decision, but they also know when to take a break and have some fun, like Kuron with DnD or Shiro when he was having a goo fight in space with the paladins before they found Olkaron.
Tumblr media
Though, I wished that for a moment before Shiro woke up that Shiro and Kuron shared a moment together on the astral plane and had a “You’re me and I’m you” moment before merging together to wake up as someone who is both Shiro and Kuron and anyone who is happy Kuron is gone and hating him for 3 fucking seasons should be ashamed, Kuron was still a person and he had tried to resist Haggar several times
Kuron was a living human BEING. HE IS SHIRO.
