Help me out here: Why is there so much Ian Flynn hate going around lately? I thought everyone loved that he was contributing to the games. Now suddenly they aren't. I guess that's par for the course for this series but I don't get it. He isn't perfect but I like what he's done. Am I a weirdo?
Ian Flynn has always had a lot of fans, but any creator putting their work out there is going to have detractors as well. That's just the nature of being an artist. To some extent, it's no big deal. He's not a perfect writer. Nobody is! I consider myself a fan of his work, but I've criticized plenty of individual writing decisions from him on here.
But Ian doesn't just have critics. He has his own obsessive hatedom. And the specific nature of Ian's hatedom is... interesting.
A decade ago, Ian was only the guy writing for Archie Sonic, meaning any debates over his work were quarantined within that tiny niche of the larger Sonic fandom. Only people who kept up with the comics month to month had any real reason to have an opinion on the guy, which means we're talking about merely thousands of fans as opposed to millions.
Within that group, he had some haters. You had the people who were mad about story changes made during his run, particularly things like ancillary characters getting killed off (although over the years we've learned that most of those were editorial mandates from Mike Pellerito). You had the people mad that Ian didn't push their favorite ship, with feuding SonAmy and Sonally fans claiming that he was CLEARLY biased towards one or the other. You had the people who just really, really liked one of the previous writers way more - usually Penders, as hard as that may be to believe today. That sort of thing. Pretty normal comic fandom type stuff. Again, it comes with the territory.
Unfortunately, many of those haters only got worse over time, morphing into reactionaries who constantly try to incite Comicsgate type culture war bullshit.
There are people still mad at Ian for making Sally bi and pairing her with Nicole instead of Sonic in the later Archie comics. There have been elaborate MS Paint red string conspiracy boards explaining how people like Ian and Jon Gray have apparently been destroying the franchise from the inside for years by Making Sonic Woke. (Jon gets dragged into this because people are still mad about him drawing The Slap 20 years later. Yes, really!!) There was an unhinged change.org petition trying to get Ian fired, specifically from people who were mad that the Freedom Fighters aren't in the IDW comics. There was even a very sad little fan campaign from these people trying to get Sega to move the Sonic comic license away from IDW and over to Udon, because they thought Udon would bring Sally and Bunnie back and also make them sexy again. There's a lot of this.
(Unfortunately, Penders has also exacerbated this by gossiping about Ian on Twitter and giving these fans ammo, but that's a whole 'nother discussion.)
The thing is, for years, people who only played the games or watched the cartoons had no reason to pay attention to any of this. Now, though, Ian isn't just writing for some weird spinoff comics that only the super nerds read. Now he's writing comics that are canon to the games, and ALSO some of the games themselves, and ALSO consulting on other tie-in media like Sonic Prime, and ALSO writing the official Sonic encyclopedia, and ALSO serving as part of the new Sonic Lore Team at Sega. And on top of all this, he's got an increasingly popular podcast where he fields questions about his work on all of these things, which serves as one of the fandom's main windows into creative decisions being made behind the scenes.
As a fan of Ian's work, it's been really cool to see him rise in prominence. But the dark side of this is that his obsessive haters from the Archie days now have WAY more of a potential audience of their own. Now, every Sonic fan has to have an opinion on Ian. What this frequently means is that you'll have the Comicsgate types taking things Ian writes or says out of context, attempting to get more of the general fandom to yell at the guy.
Unfortunately, there are a wide variety of Sonic fans who take the bait:
You've got hardcore fans who disliked basically any recent piece of Sonic media and are looking for someone to blame.
You've got the people who are concerned about the sanctity of Sonic's canon, who shoot the messenger any time Ian mentions a new retcon from Sonic Team on the podcast - or any time he even mentions the THOUGHT of changing anything about the canon, as we saw recently with the Sol Dimension nonsense.
You've got people who romanticize some sort of mythical artistic vision that Sega of Japan supposedly has (or had) for the franchise. To many of these fans, American contributors like Ian just don't "get" the heart of the series and are trying to turn Sonic into something different. (This "heart of the series" tends to be some mix of Japanese instruction manual lore, the cinematics from Sonic CD, the OVA, and/or the games written by Shiro Maekawa, depending on what Sonic media the fan in question grew up with.)
You've got fans of specific characters or ships who pin the blame for how their faves are depicted entirely on Ian - most vocally fans of Shadow, even though the root problem is that Sonic Team hasn't known what to do with Shadow since 2006. At best this stops at regular old criticism, but at its worst this devolves into claims that Ian has an agenda against certain characters.
You've got fans annoyed by a perceived over-emphasis on comic-original characters in the IDW comics, ignoring the obvious facts that these characters exist because the game cast is so tightly controlled by Sega, and also, you know, that people just like the IDW characters and want more stories about them.
You've got a LOT of discourse over IDW's Sonic being a hero who tries to give his enemies second chances, as if half of Sonic's closest friends aren't already former villains and rivals. Honestly this is very transparently just reheated Steven Universe discourse lmao
You'll also see people who just think they could do Ian's job better. They can't believe that THIS GUY is the American fan working on all these Sonic projects, when clearly THEY understand the characters and lore and themes SO much better than this charlatan.
All it takes is for someone in one of these categories to be unhappy about some recent piece of Sonic media, and for them to come across an out of context quote or comic panel that rubs them the wrong way, and suddenly the leftist Zoomer Sonic fans will join the latest dogpile on Ian alongside the reactionary Comicsgate types who are mad at him for Making Sonic Woke.
In general, when fandoms get upset, they tend to want a scapegoat. A person or two to point a finger at and go "THAT's who ruined the thing I love!" This tends to be based less on reality and more on which contributors are the most visible online. You'll sometimes see teenage and adult fans of children's cartoons single out a storyboarder who's particularly vocal on Twitter, blame them for every story decision they don't like, and harass them off the platform out of a sense of retribution for their favorite ship or whatever. Failing that, fans might choose to blame every nitpick, down to individual lines of dialogue and frames of animation, on a showrunner, just because that's the name they associate with the show. And unfortunately, when it comes to Sonic, Ian is now arguably the most prolific and outspoken contributor on the English speaking internet, and therefore a common scapegoat.
Some of the things I've seen Ian blamed for are truly wild. A lot of people have claimed for YEARS that he's just lying about the existence of creative guidelines and restrictions from Sega - or, as fans call them, The Mandates - even though they're just an inherent aspect of working on a licensed property. Others claim that The Mandates are real, but somehow Ian's fault. A vocal minority of fans have convinced themselves that Ian is the sole reason the Freedom Fighters don't exist in the IDW comics, even though Ian says he's been pushing to bring them back since day one.
Sometimes you'll see people say he ruined shit he didn't even work on. A few weeks ago on Twitter I saw someone claim that Ian had written a rejected script for Sonic Forces in which Tails died. I could not find a source for this for the life of me. As far as I can tell, the rumor seems to have been born from an alleged leaked script for Forces with margin notes from Aaron Webber that criticized the way Tails was written, and also an old tweet where Aaron joked that Tails would die in an upcoming episode of Sonic Mania Adventures. These merged into "Aaron Webber criticized a draft of the Forces script in which Tails died." How'd Ian get dragged into this? Who fucking knows!
It's all just a big game of telephone. All it takes is some asshole to make something up about Ian on Twitter or YouTube or a DeviantArt journal or some forum, and at least a couple people will believe it, and then it gets repeated as fact. Again, this used to be contained by the niche nature of the Archie Sonic fandom, but now there are WAY more people who are receptive to this shit.
It's just sad to me that Ian tries to be so open and honest about his work, to try to explain the rationale for certain things, to keep fans looped in on the direction the franchise is headed, and this just gives the Flynnspiracy types more quotes to take out of context and try to paint him as the devil. If it sounds like I'm being overly defensive and dismissing his critics, man... some of the things I've seen people say directly to him are just unbelievable. People will send paragraphs-long angry screeds in to his podcast that completely tear him apart, and he has to sit there and be like "Well, that's your opinion, and you're entitled to it." People literally pay for special guest interview episodes where they just rapid fire complaints about his writing at him directly to his face. I don't know how he does it. I would snap.
All of this over Sonic the fucking Hedgehog of all things.
I don't know how to wrap this up. Engaging with fandoms online is very tiring, which is why I tend not to do it. Things like this are too common. I guess, just... remember that making art collaboratively is a complicated thing. The people involved are generally trying their best given the circumstances, but they're only human. They make mistakes. But please treat them like humans. Criticism and dogpiling are not the same thing.

Tomorrow X Together and the growing pains of youth
Often cited as the poster boys of 4th generation K-Pop, Tomorrow X Together tell Amy Albinson about coming of age and stepping into their individual spotlights with 5th EP The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION.
Since their debut in March 2019, the five members of Tomorrow X Together have been riding out a stratospheric ascent. Comprised of Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun and Huening Kai, the group have claimed two Top 5s in the Billboard 200 and their growing global fanbase, affectionately named ‘Moments of Alwaysness’ (or MOA for short), are in the millions.
To youngest member Huening Kai, TXT’s music is the sound of youth. “It’s the sound of our generation,” he explains simply. “Whatever we’re thinking or feeling at that particular stage in our lives, that is the TOMORROW X TOGETHER sound no matter what.” It’s an ample description for a band that are hard to pigeonhole but seem to pride emotional honesty above all else. Across three studio albums and now five EPs, they’ve explored a multitude of genres, incorporating everything from pop and rock to rap and hip-hop in their sonic curation.
From the bass-heavy, creeping alt-pop of "Devil By The Window" to the saccharine daze of Sugar Rush Ride, the group are resolute in interweaving each member's taste into a cohesive five track output on their latest record. Nodding to the record’s centrepiece “Happy Fools” as a prime example, Huening Kai continues “it’s a combination of all our lyrics sung along to Yeonjun’s melody. I’d say this [track] is another good representation of our sound.”
Unlike many K-pop groups of their generation, the members don’t have defined roles in the band – all more than capable singers, rappers and dancers. As they launched into promotional activities for the new record, the quintet’s first teaser – a 6 minute-long dance retelling of J.M. Barrie’s classic tale Peter Pan – hinted at the darker undercurrents that accompany a coming of age. With this uneasy period as a backdrop, the group explain they are ready to reclaim their own identities as individuals. “We’ve talked about friendships and first experiences with love and heartbreak,” TXT’s Beomgyu admits, “we just happen to be at that stage where we’re looking to find ourselves, our names, as individual youths.” Now entering their fifth year as a band, oldest member Soobin smiles, “I think the five of us would agree that we’ve grown a lot and that we’re well into finding ourselves and establishing the band’s identity and colour. I’d like to say that our newest EP reflects that.”
On drawing on the story of Peter Pan for inspiration, Yeonjun suggests “Neverland happened to be a great thematic fit because it’s a place that appears carefree and wonderful at first glance, but the prospect of never growing up to fulfil your potentials can be terrifying. You have to decide to leave at some point, hence the EP’s final track ‘Farewell, Neverland’.” As a unit, their reflection feels honest and unabashedly open, with Taehyun admitting, “as much as we’d like to say we can hustle on forever and grow non-stop, it’s tough. On some days, you feel like you’ve hit a wall and on others, you don’t know if you’re walking forward or back. This EP came from those days."
Tracing daydreams as they resolve into a nightmarish world, the concept was carefully chosen to highlight both the good and bad elements of youth. “I think the beauty of this EP is that it has both brighter and darker moods,” starts Yeonjun, “our fans have been sharing with us a lot of positive feedback, so we’ve been very happy about that. We’re always eager to try new things; new sounds, new looks, new styles. The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION was a chance for us to portray something dreamy, bright, dark, and sexy at the same time and I’d like to give our members a pat on the back for pulling it off.” In agreement, Taehyun pipes in, “I hope people will take time and listen to all five tracks of our new EP in order. Each track has its own story, but they all flow together as one big tale of growth. It’s a different experience listening to it that way.”
Having all gained a new perspective on the world during their time in the band, they’ve admittedly noticed changes in themselves. “We’ve worked with so many different genres in the past four years. I think we definitely expanded our musical scope,” offers Taehyun, “we’re able to pull off more sounds and styles. It doesn’t take as long when recording in the studio and we’re also faster at learning choreo.” Beomgyu agrees, adding “our teamwork has improved. Each of us knows what others are thinking now. We really understand one another.”
As a cohesive unit, the boys journeyed overseas together last year on their first ever international tour. “We went across thirteen cities and wrapped it up with a performance at Lollapalooza. Being on stage is really a whole new experience. We still haven’t found the right words to describe it,” explains Beomgyu. “It’s very thrilling and it feels like everybody in the venue is really connecting. It feels incredible to see people jump up and down, and sing along to our lyrics, which is very impressive considering that most of our lyrics are in Korean. We feel very thankful for that. We can’t appreciate more just how much love our MOA are showing our music.”

Favorite 2022 Korean Album Releases
khamat — hunjiya
this album is sonically so so beautiful! the r&b-pop hybrid is trendy (which can be a strength and a weakness) but this album has amazing build up that i cannot ignore. the narrative of zillennial’s blustery self-assuredness with the tracks all in capital letters - ending with last month’s rent in lowercase as the dawning realization of adulthood and growing out of friends and your childhood home. yeah...i’ll drink to that. the best engineered album of the year.
neap paradise — shin hae gyeong
one of my faveeee rock releases of the year. the arrangement of this album is so pleasing as you delve longer and longer in its psychedelic soundscape. it’s also a little reminiscent of korean indie sounds in the early 2010s which mayhaps colored my bias to this album. in addition, there are sooo many individual hooks across this album: when the guitar solo ripssss in Vandalism? the toy laugh at the end of Kaleidoscope? the descending chords in My Chronos? *chefs kiss*
piece of space — kaiavant
this album is soooo sexy...like how can you make marimba in the opening track sound alluring? she did it though! speaking about a shattered, unstable relationship, this alt-r&b is splendidly built and shows so much potential for kaiavant. the track woo hoo (feat. kid milli) is a star. if you’re a fan of bibi’s sound, do check her out!
evergray — jiwoo
his previous album ‘esprit’ got him on my to watch list and he delivered this year!! moody, introspective, and downbeat, this album is wonderful for those searching for a slow night and jiwoo’s voice perfectly emulates the toxicity of lust, love, and breakups. like a dark curtain of rain, it ensconced you in the melodrama if you let it.
nameless things — xeuda
decided to check this album since it was co-produced by cacophony and it didn’t disappoint! if you decide to listen to this album in one sitting, it’s so artful at how it slowly unravels from being defensive in sharing to you the true nature of its artist (her anxiety) and slowly opens up to a crescendo of a frenzy and ends like a grey cast in the aftermath of a storm.
life goes on — orange flavored cigarettes
might be a ~vibey entry to the list but the funk production flares (the underwater effect in kontrast, the reverb in that’s all i want) makes it distinct against its similar bands. this was in constant rotation for the summer for the slow summer nights with its ambient vocals. highly rec check out their other 2022 singles, especially noah.
a.k.a YAYA — yaya kim
this is an insaneeeee album from start to finish. with 33 tracks (yes that’s right!!!!), this album is indulgent, effusive, and operatic in its splendor. it’s magnificent, dark, and seductive which completely matches yaya kim’s husky voice. a concept album for a noir film that doesn’t exist, if you will. from the opening track, it asks you to let down your apprehension and enjoy the velvet-textured, wonderfully performed ride to its completion.

i do love me some experimental albums and this album introduced me to the delightful name of the genre ‘folktronica’. while it’s more ambient than what i prefer, i’ve had this album on replay to able to parse something new with each listen. it’s soooo funky, fresh, and pleasant and it’s production is very evocative of a charming indie pixel game. Green Screen is my fave track of the year.
ㅠㅠ — gonggonggoo009
when this album starts, it does not let up! it’s 40 mins long album and uses it expeditiously and excellently. the tracks are delightfully groovy at times, addictive in a few, and GOES HARD that you will not fatigued by the end of the runtime. and i know the man has become persona non grata (for good, good reasons) but it will be remiss not to mention the influence of kanye’s my beautiful dark twisted fantasy in this album’s production (the tracks monster, walk and polar bear are pretty obvious - and no, it’s not just because of the autotune). however, as the album goes on it does evolve to take on more of kendrick’s work (concentration is the best track imo). fave khh album of the year, don’t miss out.

You find yourself grocery shopping and all of a sudden a french gentleman with a rapier approaches and throws one of his glove at you. "Have at thee"
As you look around you, a crowd of eager onlookers have completely surrounded you two in ring made of peoples.
What do you do in this situation?
I smirk. He smirks back.
"Pierre." I say. "It's been a long time."
He adjusts his cap with the tip of his sword looking very elegant and french as he does so. This, of course, is Pierre Le Franchgais, the legendary Eiffel Swordsman and one of the 27 Great Sword Lords of Europe. As one of the Great Sword Lords of North America, I am of course unable to decline his challenge, and I raise my arms to the sky, and begin the sacred chant to summon my own sword.
"Ihre Übersetzungssoftware ist nicht korrekt installiert!" I intone, as black rainclouds begin gathering within the grocery store itself, and rain begins to fall, drenching the fresh produce. "Bitte kontaktieren Sie so schnell wie möglich einen Techniker."
In my hand, in a flash of black lightning appears the magical zweihander known as The Owl-Killing Sword, so called for its ability to slay an owl, even if the owl is at rest or sleeping. It is a blade black as the night itself, as tall as I am, and covered in glowing blue runes from a forgotten tongue once spoken by the Headbanger Giants of Nebulous-13.
"The battle is joined." I say to Pierre.
"Hon hon hon." He responds.
We step forward toward each other at almost the exact same moment, a beautifully synchronized dance of singular super-sonic motion---so super-sonic one might mistake either of us for hedgehogs at a glance---and as we pass by each other, one of us cuts the other.
For a moment, no one is sure who has cut whom, but in a single midnight-black flash of thunder, and with the sound of a clap of lightning, a massive split opens on Pierre's chest. He coughs up a glob of a deep red substance. Not blood, of course, as a true Frenchman, his bodily fluids are 100% pure wine.
"Sacre bleu." He chokes out. "You have come far from our last bat-tel in the War of le Sun Lords."
I grin. It's cocky and I know it is, but when you've bested a swordsman who challenged you in a single stroke and he doesn't know that you've been fucking his wife on the regular for 3 years, it's hard not to be. Still, better to let the man die with dignity.
"You've improved too, Pierre. Don't be hard on yourself."
The crowd begins to hoot and holler at my display of vast basedness and humility, but then, Pierre grins again.
"Indeed, mademoiselle….I have!"
Suddenly, the gushing wound running up the length of his chest explodes into four nimble tentacles of pure elemental wine-energy.
"Mon dieu!" I exclaim, for there is no other response to such an overwhelming display of Frenchness.
Thinking fast, I parry the first of the wine-tentacles, but a second lashes me on the shoulder as I deflect the third and fourth with my body, diving in front of an innocent bystander who happens to be an almost ontologically sexy older woman. I grin through the pain and she swoons in gratitude.
Turning back to Pierre, I regard him with disgust. "So, you too have sold your soul to Marshall Macron and his Vested Order. What did he offer you? Just this paltry command of wineblood? Did he promise you a share of France once he's fully conquered it? WHAT DROVE YOU DOWN THIS DARK PATH, PIERRE?"
"MON CHERIE....IT WAS YOU!" He points, accusingly, in my direction, both with his finger and with one of the wine-tentacles. "I know that you have slept with Bella-Marie all these years! I know that my child is not my own! What else would drive a man to such depths? You think I care for Monsieur Macron? NON! I care only for your HEAD, on a SILVER PLATTER!"
With fury, he wraps one of his wine-tentacles around his rapier, and wildly hurls it at me. I deflect only barely by invoking my Pennsylvania Dutch Golden Finch Technique---drawing a hex sign in the air to repel the blade---but this leaves him an opening to lunge at me with all four tentacles.
He has me pinned down! I'm on the ropes! But of course, fury is its own weakness, and I invoke the Ancient Southeast Pennsylvania High School Self-Defense Stance, and knee him in the balls, which causes him to reel back in pain.
This opening is enough. I invoke my ancestors; the great Keenich Amos Amos, the witchy swordmistress Lady Iron-fig, and call out to the spirits of the Headbanger Giants of Nebulos-13. I throw my sword; it impales Pierre through the throat and vintage Brunello floods the produce section, mixing with the thund'rous rain. Disgusting; he wasn't even honorable enough to replace his blood with a French wine.
As Pierre lay defeated, many beautiful women in the crowd including but not limited to the one I saved earlier swoon over me. I have defeated one foe, but know many more battles lay ahead....

Sure Sonic and co may use it as another thing to tease him for as they already do for him being old but he should totally embrace it and let that gray hair keep growing instead of plucking them out or whatever he's doing to them because at his age he must be right now lol
Would love to see him with a more aged face with wrinkles and crow's feet too. He's aged like the finest wine and has been living a very crazy eventful life of being a brilliant evil genius and he's still going strong, it would emphasize that very admirable quality of his 🥰

OMG FINALLY!!! ROSEROUGE GIRL TIME YESSSSSS let's analyze this possibility:
1. There's post i made exclusively about this two being best girlfriends and how sad it was that they don't have enough screen time together despite being the first females brought to the games and how Amy is mostly seen with Cream or Blaze despite this 2 having a hard time making appearances due to one being a little kid who lives with her mom and the other a busy princess from other dimension so... To me Rouge has more time to be with Amy.
2. I'm so hyped to see Rouge as a part of the team, i suppose is similar to Sticks case in Sonic boom needing a Second fighter female and it make sense since even though she has her own team, team dark is very exclusive to themselves and lonely wolves when it comes to Shadow and Omega and unlike them Rouge was always friendly and Social with the others in a lot of occasions (and very flirty and naughty with knuckles too cof cof) and she probably is the one who has and can get more information about Eggman.
3. Did you noticed this? I have another post very popular talking about how Amy and Knuckles are pretty much siblings and also Amy is just as a power character as Knuckles and then you can see when the 5 are posing ready to fight that knuckles and Amy are next to each other as the power characters while rouge and Tails are above them as flying characters while Sonic is the speed character. So let's agree Amy is powerful! Here unlike in Sonic X she isn't a nuisance and is taken seriously in battle as much as Rouge!! THIS IS MARVELOUS.
4. Let's agree please that Amy's little dress modification is... Rather dumb and unnecessary like is exactly the same but without the back exposed? Dude what's the matter with showing skin? Is just a pink back! 🙄🙄 It feels like they did the change because they had to change something? Those extra white rings on her shoulders that are like her white collar are tacky it doesn't suits her 🤷 but it's really a little change that could go unnoticed so is ok but her cyborg look is hideous! What's up with that eye? Also, what happened to her?? Is her whole flesh body destroyed???😱😱😱
About Rouge... I'm happy with the suit and design but after reading two different opinions i have to say something, because: one was calling us, the people who doesn't like her boobs are noticeable smaller weirdos because "rouge is more than her body" yeah sure smartass I'm also more than just my nice ass, should I flatten my butt cheeks then? 🙄🙄🙄 That leads me to the other comment about someone who is also happy with the design but hates that they reduced her boobs because she also has big boobs and Rouge make her feel confident about them... This is important! This trend about characters not allowed to have big boobs because of whatever prude reasons is so annoying! Some females have big boobs! Get over it! Stop erasing them! Also little kids usually have moms, grandmas, big sisters and aunts and female teachers and I'm sure at least one or two of them have big boobs are you going to ask them to get a reduction or cover themselves up because of the kids? Like the most of them didn't suck their mom's boobs as the first thing they did right after being born 🙄🙄. Seriously! Anyway despite her breast being flattened and covered up to her neck they managed to keep her sexy aura and style so we really Should be thankful because it could have been worse.
5. I hope really really hope there's Knouge and Sonamy in this new show because I need it for mental health reasons 😂😂😂😂, but for real i need more flirty banter!! Knuckles and rouge were a treat in Sonic X and the sonamy in Sonic boom was delightful! Can we get both pretty please??🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

I feel like the fact that the Librarian is an inherently silly figure is what could lead to an upset here. that's fair however, i haven't seen any proshipper sincerely argue that you can't be grossed out or disgusted by fictional content, just that "gross" fiction should be allowed to exist.
additionally, if you're reading an incredibly fucked up fanfiction on ao3, it's probably going to be tagged with e.g. underage, whereas if you pick up stephen king's It you're not going to be warned that it has an underage sex scene -- but antis only go after that first thing, because they want a target they can hit more than anything else
Unfortunately, I have, which is why I say "use common sense, people" because like. I'm not mad when people don't like reading or watching disturbing content! It's disturbing content! It's meant to disturb! The discomfort is the point!
Also that really depends on how you engage with IT- certain book lists and libraries WILL actually point these potential triggers out, but it's a matter of knowing beforehand. You're right, the book itself doesn't have a tag section on the back pointing out the triggers. However it's a horror book, and it's about kids, and it's written during a time where horror was often combined with sexy, so knowing these things tells me there's probably a sex scene or two in here and it probably involves the kids and it's a King book so it's probably weird and fucked up because he likes to write weird fucked up things when he's writing horror. Again, common sense.
However I did make that same point with the series I'm currently reading. No one goes after these books despite having some fairly triggering content but they sure do love going after someone who joking draws Sonic banging Pikachu.
I read a dark fantasy novel I actually had no idea was dark fantasy until I started reading it, and it opens with rape scene after rape scene and detailed domestic abuse and miscarriage and eventually the torture and immolation and demon sacrifice of an autistic minor was where I went "okay that's enough". It wasn't marked properly and I didn't know, I thought it was just a book about dragons. I'll never go back to that series, but it's pretty popular and I've seen it on other dark fantasy rec lists. At the time I was really disgusted and upset, and as said I still won't try reading it again as an adult (I found it when I was in middle school), but if other people are able to get through the discomfort for the story then fine I guess. I do think books should be better marked to prevent this from happening to other kids.

grits teeth. the issue isn’t adults making mature content for kids media there’s nothing wrong about someone drawing a sexy eda clawthorne or writing a horror pokemon fic inherently the issue is that the modern internet is a horrible hellscape that doesn’t allow separate communities for adults and kids very well and it all kind of gets lumped together as Content and it means when you search for the Content you get innocent sonic art next to Rogue the Bat getting railed and that’s not good for ANYONE. if people were able to have their own communities where they could write smut and not have to worry about their work being shoved in the face of random eight year olds under the whole CONTENT? YOU LIKED THIS SO YOU MUST LIKE THIS UWU guise then like, it might be weird but it’s like. fine. no one is being hurt inherently by having a fic written where there’s dark themes or sexual themes or whatever. there can be issues if it’s written bad or whatever but the issue with mature content of kids media isn’t that it exists it’s that it’s hard to keep it away from people it should be kept away from!

Hulder — Verses in Oath (20 Buck Spin)

There’s an interesting semi-cosmopolitan quality to Verses in Oath, Hulder’s second LP and first release for Pittsburgh-based label 20 Buck Spin (NB, when this reviewer remembers the label’s locale, he always flashes on the moment in Videodrome, when Harlan tells Max where the titular, explicitly violent, deeply unpleasant S&M television signal emanates from: “Pittsburgh.” No so cosmopolitan. But we digress). There are tones and textures attributable to the Norwegian kvlt canon, the equally legendary late-90s Greek scene, even some moments that recall more recent melodic USBM acts, like Ludicra — see the vocals and vibe of the opening minutes of “Hearken the End.” Is Hulder attempting grand synthesis, or is she just playing to established listenerships?
For an artist so early in her career, the project of reducing black metal to some designable set of common properties might seem like hubris. But there has always been significant skill (and a sharp sense for PR) in Hulder’s approach to carving a space out for herself in black metal’s overcrowded field. Some early promo images leaned into her conventional good looks and long blonde hair; there were spike-studded leather bras and some exposed midriff action. One can’t blame her. In black metal’s sometimes misogynist Guyville, sexiness can be cover or weapon. And when a more coherent musical profile seemed to clarify on Godslastering: Hyms of a Forlorn Peasantry (2021), dueling imagos of Hulder as waify farmgirl and as baleful, witchy demon sought to complement the music’s focus on the rural cultures of the European Dark Ages.
Verses in Oath is a more assured record, less invested in an overt thematics of Medieval forest and field, more interested in musical drama. The record’s second side is particularly effective. Check out the raging thump and boil of “Vessel of Suffering” and the sharp interplay between steely riffage and synthy mournfulness of “Cast into the Well of Remembrance.” Ultimately, though, any synthesis effected by the record seems more like an accumulation of safe bets. None of these songs wishes to move black metal forward into any sort of unfamiliar configuration — and for many, many fans of the genre, that’s just fine. Hulder’s PR smarts may be at work: She likely still has dues to pay in Guyville (an especially hidebound place among the black metal dudes) in order to score more Decibel covers and make her way to an even bigger label.
Those things are said without any particular stink on them. It’s never been easy to make it as a professional musician, to say nothing of doing that as a woman. In music’s currently confused conjuncture — economic and cultural — it must be really hard. One can’t blame Hulder for consolidating her chops and cred. But one can also hope that she’ll move her prodigious talents into more forbidding sonic terrain, sometime soon.
