Yo! Call me Metaru, Jamie, Tommy, Clem/Clement, Defo/Def, Rea, or Dionne, all are fine. I'm 20, and I use they/them and it/itself pronouns. I do fanart and stuff, mostly for DSMP and TOH. This blog is just c!primeboys (derogatory) and hunter and belos central. - Muse of Rage, Prospit Dreamer
So we all know that Tumblr is US-centric. But to what degree? (and can we skew the results of this poll by posting it at a time where they should be asleep?)
like, there’s a few cases where i kind of get it, like with story legends it’d be a bit weird if, say, the miraidon you had all game or the legendary lillie had with her suddenly changed colour (though obvs I’d still prefer if they were huntable) but gamefreak i swear rolls a fucking dice to decide what’s shiny-locked or not. like it’s not even just legendaries they shiny lock the most arbitrary things. like there’s static corvisquire that are shiny locked but a one time static encounter eldegoss that isn’t for some reason?
I haven’t touched the Pokémon DLC yet, but shiny locking the returning legendaries feels cruel. The legendaries are free to hunt in Sword and Shield’s DLC, so why would they lock them here?
This means 20 new Paldea Pokemon are shiny locked this gen. A 6th of the dex. Feels unnecessary
it’s so funny to me that I’ve run into full odds shinies in fan games twice. like my luck in fan games? astronomical. but it does not follow me to main games alas. i mean hopefully it will I’m hunting for a shiny maschiff bc it looks like Roxy when it evolves and I want a dog that looks like my dog
I love “elite four” as a translation like. obviously the concept of the four heavenly kings so they couldn’t keep it as that without it being confusing and probably conjuring a completely different meaning in young kids heads, so they went with a translation that both gets across the general gist- not all of it bc again the concept isn’t familiar to western audiences especially like six year olds, but enough that you Get what the elite four is the second you hear the name- and also just sounds cool as shit. god I could analyse how much I love the localisation in Pokémon forever. it has flaws but it’s always been consistently high effort and creative when it has to convey ideas that are universally understood in japanese culture but obscure outside of it.but I need to sleep so I’ll stop
like we do have a look at early shinies that prove that they’re not made by an algorithm entirely bc there’s handmade tweaks. but there definitely seems to have been weird rules gamefreak used as they’re usually very similar in colour. i don’t think it was computer generated i just think that they chose the colours based off of the types bc pokemon of similar types tend to have similar colour shifts. i don’t think they were thought about as much bc i don’t think the devs could have anticipated the levels of insanity people go to over shiny Pokémon. like in their original state in beta demos shinies were slightly uncommon like you’d easily find a few it seems originally they were planned as something far less special and even after they decided the 1/8000ish odds, they still didn’t really expect people to go as feral as they did they probably thought it was a cool rare Easter Egg and not like something people would literally devote their life to finding.
on today’s edition of random pokemon facts did you know we were robbed of a pokemon pink version in gen 1. like yellow was meant to have pink as it’s counterpart like red and green/blue and youd have a clefairy instead of a pikachu bc originally clefairy was meant to be a mascot of the franchise. i want a pokemon pink but alas they scrapped the idea.
also like when I say I mostly play old games it’s not bc of, like, an elitist thing, it’s bc new games are way less accessible to me. turn based games and simulators just aren’t the big thing anymore and a lot of the most popular genres are stuff i physically hurt from playing. like, for context, i can play one single round of mario party and then I can’t use my hands properly for hours. the only fast paced game i play is isaac and there’s items in that i can’t fucking use bc the way they alter my controls physically causes me pain. i physically cannot play the games coming out today. they cause me severe pain that makes it impossible for me to do anything afterwards. of course there are exceptions but the time where turn based games were big is gone, and so i can play maybe a few major titles each year if i'm lucky. and even a lot of rpgs now have timing elements which again i physically struggle with! i haven’t beat legends Arceus bc the boss battles and catching Pokémon in it causes me physical pain and that’s like, not even that involved.
so that means the majority of what i can play, physically, without causing intense pain (as in, “comparable to an ear infection”- i'm recovering from one and it wasn’t as painful as some of my worst days!), are either indie titles, small studios in niches like text adventure and simulators, and stuff like Pokemon and sims. i feel sad sometimes when i see people really get into games i can’t play, because there’s just so much cool stuff that is still not worth me harming myself to go through, and i wish I could :(
genuinely if scarlet and violet was able to get a bit more polish they’d easily be the best Pokémon games like. full stop. absolutely Zero debate. the gameplay is refined, the open world is a blast and like, yeah level scaling probably would have been for the best but there’s nothing as genuinely fucking terrifying as accidentally running into a wild level 50 pokemon with your level 20s and the satisfaction when you catch it. seeing Pokémon just like, exist in the world is delightful, the variety is honestly pretty good, the gameplay is, well, it’s Pokémon, it's so addictively fun to play with strategies I find myself grinding just bc it’s a blast to play. the music is the best we got since the GOAT Gen 5 and the storyline is both insanely good and not as handholdy as like sun and moon (though the early game is a bit rough). genuinely it’s such a peak game behind the fact game freak basically released it in beta.
thankfully as someone who generally sticks with old as sin games with way too much ambition for their own good, “nightmare biggest and also the best game you’ll ever play” is exactly my cup of tea, so.
i hope my weirdly popular post about very basic pokemon dev info I genuinely thought everyone already knew has inspired ppl to check out the cutting room floors extensive documentation of the development of pokemon bc there is some hysterical shit there genuinely. the devs named a ton of cries after ultraman monsters bc they’re tokusatsu nerds. that cracks me up for some reason.
something really funny reading through all the leaked info is seeing like correspondence between the localisers and legal for pokemon names bc they not only give an explanation on what the names are meant to mean but also it gives the very funny fact lapras had its name unchanged from the japanese version bc they thought it might be read as “something plus” in english or as “la place” or the place as in a seat and like. i don’t think anyone ended up actually thinking that upon seeing lapras's name but like. very funny reasonings i will name my next lapras THE PLACE (as it is capitalised in the correspondence)
