For a while after I got out of Uni I made it my mission to build up a collection of arthouse cinematic mainstays to compensate for a childhood spent absorbing commercial gunk in a household of philistines. Lots of French directors, lots of '70s nu-cinema, that sort of thing. Goncharov inevitably found its way into that list by default but my reaction to Andrey's seven-minute breakdown over Katya's joyless one-night fling with his beloved was of a piece with the rest of the films I'd dumped my savings on, which was "I can see why this is a classic, but I'd honestly find sticking my head in a wood-chipper more entertaining."
