by MonocerosRex
T, 44k, Wangxian
Summary: “Hello?” She answered, expecting a telemarketer. “Hello,” a polite voice replied. “Is this the residence of Wei Ying?” Jiang Yanli’s her grip on the receiver tightened. “It is,” she replied calmly, waving at Wei Ying to get his phone out. “This is his sister. May I ask who is calling?” “I suspect you know the answer to that,” the man said. His voice, though smooth and pleasant, sounded tired. “Lan Zhan?” She guessed, turning to see Wei Ying staring at her instead of calling the police. She tried to urge him with her expression. “No,” the man replied. “I am afraid my younger brother is in no position to make phone calls, or perform illegal spellwork for that matter.” He didn’t just sound tired, she realised. He sounded… heartbroken. “He has been in a coma for some time, and the doctors do not believe he will last the night.” After his brother's core is destroyed—a fatal injury—Lan Huan seeks out Lan Zhan's soulmate. Wei Ying agrees to share his spiritual energy with this beautiful stranger over the course of several weeks in order to save his life. They don't stay strangers for long.
Kay's comments: A wonderful modern AU with a nice flavour of magical realism and soulmates. After Lan Zhan's core gets damaged, Lan Huan makes use of a forbidden ritual to find his soulmate - the only one who can heal him. Luckily, Wei Wuxian doesn't press charges and instead immediately takes the next flight to save Lan Zhan's life. They fall in love. Lots of domestic fluff in this story and only minor angst.
Excerpt: Wei Ying eyed his brother for another moment before shrugging to himself. He turned back to Lan Zhan, his smile reappearing. "I'm really here for you!" Whatever Lan Zhan had expected him to say, it had not been that. "For me?" "Yeah! What are you supposed to do when a handsome prince falls into a cursed sleep?" Wei Ying laughed, eyes glittering. "Bring his true love to kiss him awake, of course!" The man pointed to himself with both thumbs. The man's meaning struck Lan Zhan in the gut. He turned to his brother in horror, only to find him looking back, chin high. Lan Zhan's eyes widened in shocked anger. "It was the only way to save you, little brother."
modern setting, modern with magic, magical realism, set in australia, pov wei wuxian, pov lan wangji, soulmates, musician lan wangji, scientist wei wuxian, strangers to lovers, getting together, getting to know each other, good sibling lan xichen, good sibling jiang yanli, bad parent lan qiren, hurt/comfort, angst with a happy ending, angst and hurt/comfort, hospitals, hurt lan wangji, recovery, sharing a bed, hair washing, marriage proposal, sibling bonding

Ava Paige was a particular woman, Mary came to realise. She never switched up her order, always arrived at the exact same time, and looked exactly how she wanted to: perfect. She didn’t change, and that was Mary’s type of woman; someone who would stay in the box she had set for them. At least, that was what Mary had thought, before Ava Paige had to go and ruin it all.

using both fahrenheit and celsius to determine temperature is wild because you’ll be thinking in one measurement unit and someone will say some alarming number and then you calm down when you realize they meant they’re baking their recipe at 350° fahrenheit

it’s like the artful dodger (2023) was MADE for tumblr. thomas brodie-sangster and flowy bloody sleeves. delightfully gory victorian surgery. period romance that is way hotter than it should be. period costuming that is FOR ONCE not referred to as ‘stifling’ or ‘torture’ by the spunky lady lead (this one’s for the historical dress community). anti-authoritarian. crime shenaniganry. young upstart tempted to their old ways. banger guy-ritchie-sherlock-holmes -2009-esque soundtrack. lovely lighting direction. what more could you possibly want.

I think what attracts people to humans are space orcs stories is not the inherent idea that humans are evolutionarily aberrant in the universe. Rather, it is the solution to the existential crisis of what if we are not alone in the universe. If we are alone in the universe, we are unique and able to make our mark on the universe unhindered.
But if we are not alone, if there are countless other species, each identically unique, what is there to set humanity apart? How do we make the universe remember us after we have gone extinct. If all species are exactly like us, have things that make them unique and memorable, each grew up on a deathworld, each views themselves as a space orc, each has attributes about them but are multifaceted species, what difference does the existence of humanity make on the universe? Earth having evolved life will matter for the surrounding star systems and any individuals that come in contact with earthlings, but in a million years, will anyone care? Will we make a mark upon the universe, do anything to make the cosmos take notice of us?
And so in a universe of space orcs, what is it that humanity can do to separate ourselves? Space orc is not a prophecy, it is a promise to the stars. The only fear we have is not that we are not alone, it is that we are not unique.

FYI just want people to know that the abbreviation of Omegaverse with and without the slashes is a very real world derogatory slur that has been hurled towards Indigenous Aboriginal Australians for centuries. I obviously understand not everyone is fully aware of Australia's history of institutionalized racism, genocide of traditional land owners and the stolen generation etc., but seeing the Omegaverse abbreviation everywhere is genuinely frustrating especially when people are ignorant to the actual serious implications of the word when put into a different cultural context.
EDIT: it should be noted that is also frustrating that people outside of Australia don't really know much about it's racist history (which is no fault of their own, hell even my education on Australian history back in primary school was abysmal and never mentioned the countless genocides the English settlers caused on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people during colonization), but that's a whole other wider conversation - and even then you should be looking for Indigenous Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander Voices if you want learn about Australia's history.
