Ice Tribe Seax A simple sidearm made from found materials, it's useful to have while hunting a Fanged Gouti, or raiding a village.

The sword of the day is the seax.
Tumblr media
The seax (pronounced “sax”) was a type of knife used in the early medieval period by Vikings and other Germanic peoples, like the Saxons (indeed, the Saxons may take their name from this knife). The name just means “knife,” but it has come to refer specifically to this type of knife. This example is known as a broken-back seax, characterized by the sharply angled tip.

Knife day #2 -- this goes a lot faster when you know what you’re doing
Once it had reached a neighborly hour for hammering, I beveled the design:
Tumblr media
And man oh MAN, what a difference using good leather makes. Look at that lovely burnishing. 😻😻😻
Experimented with using a seeder stamp to make the background this time:
Tumblr media
It’s interesting; I don’t hate it. Reminds me of frog eggs.
Shaping it around the knife over lost a lot of the detail near the fold though. Next time I’ll make sure the tooled parts stay a little further from the spine:
Tumblr media
I did some manual touchups to the tooling, and finished the shaping:
Tumblr media
Stained it (with Eco-Flo medium brown antiqueing gel, followed by Fiebings dark brown antiqueing paste), gave it a topcoat of resolene:
Tumblr media
With the stain, I actually prefer the seeder to the backgrounding texture I used yesterday. I don’t even think it took any longer to do.
Lay down contact cement on inside edges, wait 15 minutes:
Tumblr media
Press sides together, decide where you’re going to cut off the excess. I had learned yesterday (but forgotten about, and failed to correct for when I was designing the pattern for this one) that the edge needs more allowance around the handle than the blade, in order to have enough room to fit the rivets, so I widened it out a bit:
Tumblr media
Cut off the excess:
Tumblr media
Round & smooth the edges with dremel and sandpaper:
Tumblr media
Stained edges and burnished them with tokonole again, then punched my holes. (And set an eyelet into the top, instead of putting two belt loops):
Tumblr media
Put in the rest of the rivets and BAM, FINISHED.
Tumblr media
and oh my god it is the cutest thing EVER. LOOK AT THIS LITTLE GUY. LOOK HOW PHOTOGENIC HE IS. 😍😍
(I’ll be honest, I’m considering keeping this one for myself instead of selling it.)
So yeah -- sheath all done, and pre-patterning it before molding was a smashing success. I’m looking forward to making more seaxes with knife guy, because I’ve got the sheaths DOWN, my dudes.

Now that it has been awarded, I can finally post it! This seax is a recreation (pic also posted below) and the dimensions ended up exact. The best for my Queen.
The blade is from a billet of Damascus that was gifted to me from Master Ulfgeirr. I wanted her to have her Tyger stripes. The handle is a brass bolster, G10, antler, and flame birch. Inlaid in the handle is the OGR symbol done in opal.

Ronin Katana had their annual scratch and dent sale, so I picked up a very cheap and nice seax. Scratch and dent means I have to clean up a bit of rust and there's some minor cosmetic imperfections, but who fucking cares-- it's a knife, not a glass sculpture.

Continental Broad Seax: Designed by Markland Merchants to be a historically accurate broad seax for the serious Viking reenactor – it has a blade of tempered EN45 high carbon steel which is tempered to a 56-58 HRc hardness.
Danelaw Seax: This robust bladed seax is the so-called broken-back style seax. These seaxes have a sharp angled transition between the back section of the blade and the point. This shape makes the spine appear to be broken like a beast with a broken back which is where this evocative blade style gets its name.

You spend a long time at the shrine marker. Your mind skims like a skittish bird over memories that are and aren't yours, remembering the days when the shrines of the Mountain's Pilgrim were scrubbed-clean stone. How long has it been since you could feel fresh air like this?
Seax warmup. He's having a great time, he has no problems at all (that he will tell Osteon about)!
