Here’s Why Everyone Is Talking About A Pirate Drama That Ended In 2017

Black Sails has been described as Game of Thrones with pirates

If Black Sails kicked off in 2020 instead of 2014, it certainly would have thrown fuel on the raging fire that was TikTok’s sea shanty obsession. The reality is that this TV series aired on Starz from 2014 for four seasons, coming to a close in 2017. So why is everyone talking about it now, a decade after it began?

Black Sails is coming to Netflix very soon, triggering its fans to emerge from the woodwork and promote the show online. ‘I am SO excited for people who’ll be watching this show for the first time,’ one user wrote, with many others recommending the series to fans of Game of Thrones. With House of the Dragon still a few months away, here’s why you should tune into Black Sails this month.

What Is Black Sails About?

Black Sails transports us back to 1715 – aka the Golden Age of Piracy. Set in New Providence, an island in the Bahamas, we meet the feared Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) who brings a new younger crew member into the fold (‘Long’ John Silver, played by Luke Arnold) as his crew continues to fight for survival and negotiate their space on the island.

Is Black Sails Based On A Book?

Black Sails was written as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Treasure Island (1883).

Is It Based On A True Story?

While Black Sails isn’t based on a true story, it does trace real events. The first season focuses on the hunt for the Spanish treasure galleon Urca de Lima, a real ship that sank in 1715 near Fort Pierce in Florida (where it still lies). Season two traces the fallout of Urca de Lima’s treasure being stranded in Florida, strictly guarded by Spanish soldiers while pirates prowl the shores. The subsequent third and fourth seasons then look at the war for the control of New Providence between the pirates and the British Empire – a la Pirates of the Caribbean.

Likewise, some of the characters are based on real people. Real pirates fictionalised in the show include:

Anne Bonny (Clara Paget)

Benjamin Hornigold (Hakeem Kae-Kazim)

Jack Rackham (Toby Schmitz)

Charles Vane (Zach McGowan)

Meanwhile, Captain Woodes Rogers (Luke Roberts) – who represents the British Empire in seasons three and four – is based on a real English sea captain and slave trader, and subsequently the first Royal Governor of the Bahamas.

Was Captain Flint A Real Pirate?

Captain Flint is a fictional character who was first created by Robert Louis Stevenson in Treasure Island. He has since appeared in multiple works of fiction, including A. D. Howden Smith’s Porto Bello Gold (1924), John Drake’s Flint and Silver (2008), Pieces of Eight (2009) and Skull and Bones (2010), and J. M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy (1904).

Where Was Black Sails Filmed?

Black Sails was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, mainly inside at Cape Town Film Studio. Because the real city is so different today than it was in the 1700s, Nassau – the capital of the Bahamas, located on New Providence island – was built from scratch in a studio over a period of four months, as were two large water tanks to house the series’ two ships. Some scenes were filmed outside in and around Cape Town when new terrain was required, but most of the series was filmed on set.

Below is my ranking of the Season One episodes of the adventure series, "AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS". Based on Jules Verne's 1973 novel and created by Ashley Pharoah and Caleb Ranson, the series stars David Tennant, Ibrahim Koma and Leonie Benesch:

"AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS" SEASON ONE (2021) EPISODES RANKING

1. (1.03) "Episode 1.3" - Stuck on Yemen's west coast, gentleman traveler Phineas Fogg decides on a dangerous desert crossing with his valet Jean Passepartout, leaving news reporter and traveling companion Abigail Fortescue aka Fix in a place where even a fellow Englishwoman proves hostile. Lindsay Duncan and Faical Elkihel guest starred.

2. 1.05) "Episode 1.5" - Passepartout's knowledge of the Hong Kong colony proves useful when Fogg's finances are blocked by his London bank and Scotland Yard. Abigail's latest article threatens to humiliate Phileas at a party held in his honor at the Govenor's estate. Victoria Smurfit, Patrick Kennedy and Thomas Chaanhing guest starred.

3. (1.04) "Episode 1.4" - The traveling trio are stranded at a village in British India, where a wedding is about to take place and the groom, a deserter from the British Army has been arrested. Shivaani Ghai, Kiroshan Naidoo and Charlie Hamblett guest starred.

4. (1.07) "Episode 1.7" - While Fogg and his companions travel through the Rockies in a chartered stagecoah, he unwillingly lets famous lawman Bass Reeves and the latter's prisoner share the stagecoach, unaware the captive's cronies are in hot pursuit. John Light and Gary Beadle guest starred.

5. (1.08) "Episode 1.8" - In the season finale, Fogg's reunion with an old love, deadly dockside danger and red tape in New York City might spell failure for Fogg's "around the world" bet. Dolly Wells guest starred.

6. (1.01) "Episode 1.1" - In the series opener, Fogg is goaded by corrupt fellow Reform Club member Nyle Bellamy into a bet that he can circle the globe in just 80 days, despite never having been abroad before. He is accompanied by Passepartout and Abigail, who wants to record his journey. Their first major stop is Paris, where Fogg inadvertently foils an assassination attempt on the President of France, Adolphe Thiers, by rebels led by Passepartout's brother. Loic Djani, Richard Wilson and Masali Baduza guest starred.

7. (1.02) "Episode 1.2" - Fogg's self-respect is threatened by ridicule from Italian industrialist and widower Niccolo Moretti during a train journey to Brindisi, Italy; worrying Abigail and Passepartout before a disaster strikes. Giovanni Scifoni guest starred.

8. (1.06) "Episode 1.6" - Thanks to Bellamy's henchman Thomas Kneedling; Fogg, Abigail and Passepartout find themselves stranded on a desert island in the East China Sea. With the clock ticking, the trio must learn to forgive and work together to escape the island and resume their journey.

Trick or trivia

Happy Halloween! I do enjoy trivia of many types, but one of my favorite genres is what I call the Berenstein Timeline: unmade shows and movies, versions of classic movies where studios and producers made different decisions, some better, some much worse. All of these are real projects that were, on some level, considered (there are some recurring names)

"Heat Vision & Jack", a 90s pastiche of 70s-80s action shows starring Jack Black as an astronaut on the run from the law and Owen Wilson as his talking motorcycle

"Jurassic Park" directed by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp as Alan Grant, Jim Carrey as Ian Malcolm, and Vincent Price as John Hammond

the 90s "Batman" directed by Ivan Reitman; Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy were going to star but couldn't decide which of them would be Batman and which would be Robin

Back in the 1970s the American network was getting good numbers showing heavily-edited reruns of "Monty Python's Flying Circus", so they tried to sell the Pythons on the next logical step: an animated Saturday morning cartoon

"Edward Scissorhands" still directed by Burton but starring Tom Cruise or maybe Michael Jackson

"Return of the Jedi" directed by David Lynch; Harrison Ford was considering not coming back for the third movie and so when he came out of the carbonite there was a chance he would have been Christopher Walken

Guillermo del Toro's "At the Mountains of Madness". Also "the Hobbit" and lots of other things, he seems to have a lot of unmade projects

the 2010s "Star Trek" movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, where the edgy reboot crew visits the Gangster Planet from that one stupid episode of the original series

Everybody knows about the unmade "Superman Lives" starring Nicolas Cage in the title role, but did you know it was going to be directed by Tim Burton and include Christopher Walken as Brainiac, who would have been a green head on spider legs

Harold Ramis didn't particularly want to act on camera, so when they were casting "Ghostbusters" Egon could have been Christopher Walken, Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Goldblum, or John Lithgow. Supposedly the movie was originally intended to be a relatively serious exploration of Dan Akroyd's very real interest in paranormal investigation, although this clashes a bit with the fact that Peter Venkman was originally going to be played by John Belushi and Winston Zeddmore was written for Eddie Murphy who backed out when the character's backstory and most of his lines were cut

March 2024 Escher Girls Update and Patreon Thank You!

Hi everybody!

It's a new month, so it's time for a site update and to thank our awesome Patreon subscribers!

First, I've restored more posts that were broken in the move from Tumblr due to being animated gifs or posts/users being deleted/leaving Tumblr before the export, etc... I also reformat all the posts to be easier to read and add image descriptions to all the images. This month, one of the posts I restored was this great breakdown and redraw by LessTitsNAss of the Superman vol. 3 #9 cover featuring Anguish/Masochist punching Superman while in a boobs and butt pose. At the time the preview of the cover came out, the character was named Masochist, but I believe she was renamed to Anguish when the comic was actually published, hence why some of the posts still refer to her as Masochist. I put a combined image of the redraw and breakdown as the image for this post, but if you want to see larger versions of each part, go check out the post!

And I'm continuing to work my way through the Tumblr inbox backlog so old submissions might be showing up. Due to the way Tumblr piles up everything in descending order of newest first, a lot of the older stuff got buried since I get a lot of submissions, and it takes a while for me to get to it. I'm really sorry if it's taken this long for your submission to show up.

I've also been continuing to appeal mistakenly flagged posts by Tumblr's algorithm which can't tell the difference between stuff like a solid coloured body suit and actual nudity (it flagged Johnny Storm as being naked, for instance because he was on fire). The algorithmic flagging, sudden rule changes, and other controversies, are the reason I host Escher Girls independently as well as cross-posting on Tumblr because then there's an archive of the posts that aren't affected by posts being flagged or removed on Tumblr or if Tumblr goes down or something.

And it's also why I really appreciate everybody who supposed us on Patreon and Ko-Fi. <3 It helps me pay for server costs, upgrades, domain hosting, and other things that help to keep the site going. :)

Happy New Year everybody!

It's now January so it's time for a monthly update and to thank all our wonderful Patreon subscribers. :3 Since it's a new year, rather than thank only the Patreon subscribers for December, I'm going to thank anybody who subscribed in 2023 including those who donated on Ko-Fi. :)

For the update, this month I was fixing up the Jade Warriors and Psylocke tag, specifically, this Psylocke post from the early days of EG where she's technically fighting ninjas, and three of the most infamous Jade Warriors posts: the "rain" post, the "drying off" post, and the "females" post. The "drying off" and "females" posts also have two of the best redraw/re-scripts submitted to this blog, which I also restored and wanted to share with everybody because they're really great. The "drying off" redraw was done by @ghostgreen, and the "females" redraw was done by Eliza. I included both and the originals in this post because I think people who haven't seen them before might be interested to. :)

I mentioned this last month, but if you use Disqus, you should have noticed that the reactions have been changed to be less generic, and I've included a "thanks, I hate it!" option because it was requested.

Anyway, now I want to get to thanking everybody who helped support Escher Girls in 2023, whether through Patreon or Ko-Fi. :)

I know it's repetitive, but it's true, I really appreciate your support so much. because without it I wouldn't be able to keep the site independently hosted, unaffected by Tumblr's ever-changing policies and automated flagging system. We're also better able to make upgrades and maintain the site and fix stuff when it breaks, like fixing the submission form last month. And it just means a lot to me to know that people think Escher Girls is a project worth supporting and keeping online as an archive. :)
