"Say no Proof Koch Treatment Remedy for Cancer,” Ottawa Journal. April 7, 1942. Page 12. ---- TORONTO, April 7 - The Ontario Cancer Commission in a report released today by Health Minister Harold J. Kirby, says that a careful review of all evidence presented at this date fails utterly in the opinion of the commission to support the claim made on behalf of the Koch treatment that it is either a remedy or cure for cancer.

The investigation centred on the use of glyoxylide, a substance for which Dr. William Koch, of Detroit, holds the formula. Its use in Ontario had been sponsored by Dr. David H. Arnott, of London.

Since the commission was first formed in 1938 and embarked upon its investigation, Dr. Arnott stopped using the treatment, the report states, because he did not wish to submit samples or formula tor the commission, under Section 6 of the Cancer Remedy Act, continued use of "glyoxylide" would have compelled Dr. Arnott to supply such samples and formula.

At the same time, the London doctor sought to have the commission co-operate with him in application of the Koch treatment, promising hhe would "use his best efforts to have the formula and methods of treatment revealed". The commission declined, however. contending its experts should have permission to use the substance themselves and at the same time have knowledge of the formula.

The investigation for the most part consisted of reviewing case histories and the testimony of certain patients who had been treated with the substance. . A number of witnesses were heard in London while the histories of 20 eases treated in the United States were reviewed.

The commission arranged for Dr. Arnott to treat 10 cases in Ottawa, this treatment occurring under the observation of Dr..R. E. Valin, one of the commissioners. Nine of the patients, with positive biopsies for cancer, died. The other patient, who is now well, did not have cancer.

The report concludes that despite promises of co-operation by Dr. Arnott, the commission has never been able to obtain a sample of the substance in question to proceed with its laboratory investigations. .
