Country boy in Saitama
The last day trip I did in Japan was a motorcycle/hike trip to Sayama Hills in Tokorozawa, Saitama. I really wanted to get away from the noise of the city, so I tried to find a place that's close, but not crowded. People might know it because of its multiple Totoro forests, but I knew it because it's close to Seibuen, an amusement park with a retro town I was supposed to go to with my friends, but never managed to.
I know the outfit might not be the most interesting for you, but I still wanted to dress up. It still had to be practical enough for motorcycle and hiking (you'll realise the change to sneakers after the two first photos).
Outfit:Pants are Uniqlo, everything else is thrifted.

Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki is known for imbuing his movies with big themes that include the importance of conserving the environment, but he doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks the walk too.
One place he likes to walk the walk — literally and metaphorically — is Sayama Hills in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture. The 81-year-old director, who’s been residing in Tokorozawa for the past 52 years, credits the forested area for the creation of one of his most iconic characters, saying “If we didn’t live in Tokorozawa, Totoro would never have been born.”
The director has such a soft spot for the area that he’s been working hard to preserve it, turning it into “Totoro’s Forest” and even encouraging the local government to get on board with the preservation project. Never one to rest on his laurels, Miyazaki is keen to continue expanding the forest, and to do that, he and the city are now asking the public for help, with a crowdfunding campaign that offers a very special reward for contributors.
The campaign, which is part of the “Kitaakitsu/Kamiyasumatsu District Urban Green Space Conservation Project” currently being run by Tokorozawa City, aims to conserve the “Kaminoyama” green area and the “Akitsu no Mori” green area.
In order to “preserve precious greenery”, one percent of Tokorozawa City’s individual municipal tax revenue has been allocated to purchase the above-mentioned 3.5 hectares of land from landowners, but unfortunately this is not enough to prevent residential land development and the loss of green spaces.
Tokorozawa City is spending 1.8 billion yen (US$12.8 million) on the project, with Miyazaki donating 300 million yen ($2.1 million) of his own money towards the cause. However, the projected costs are estimated to be 2.6 billion yen ($18.5 million), which is where the crowdfunding campaign comes in.
Contributions towards the campaign, which aims to raise a total of 25 million yen, are set at 25,000 yen ($178.04). In return, supporters will receive five reproductions of background art used in the Ghibli movie My Neighbour Totoro.
To help drum up interest for the campaign, Studio Ghibli producer and co-founder Toshio Suzuki wrote this message, published on the campaign page.
“Kaminoyama is where the concept of ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ was born. We ask for your cooperation towards crowdfunding.”
As the birthplace of My Neighbour Totoro, preserving the area is of vital importance to not only the studio but also its fans. While the campaign is limited to people within Japan, as the background art can’t be shipped overseas, there’s been an overwhelming amount of support from local fans, with 86 percent of the funds raised as of this writing and only 36 sets remaining.
Once the campaign reaches its goal, the city will use all the funds raised to purchase land for the urban green space conservation project in the 2023 fiscal year. Preserving and maintaining the green areas in and around Totoro’s Forest is an ongoing project, however, so it’s highly likely that this isn’t the end of the crowdfunding campaigns and Ghibli offers coming our way.
After all, preserving the environment for future generations is a never-ending endeavour befitting Miyazaki, the never-ending man.
Tumblr media
The campaign has reached its initial goal, but there's more than a week left to contribute to the project and give the campaigners more to work with:

Hey Niu~ Do you have any smaller wonders you'd recommend visiting in Japan
Sure!
OSAKA
If you go to Osaka around the end of a month, there's a monthly temple flea market in the Shitennoji temple yard. It's arranged on 21st and 22nd of each month, and regular people are selling there their old stuff, as well as booths selling vintage kimonos, yukatas, haoris etc., ceramics, decorations, lots of antique items, statues etc. Take a subway to Tennoji station, the temple is next it. Read more here!
In Osaka, near Tenma JR railwaystation, is a takoyaki shop owned by an 86 year old lady called Hiroko. She's been making takoyakis for 60 years in that shop. You might have seen this image set of Hiroko giving a piece of her mind about people complaining that her food is too yellow (if not, see it - it's hilarious!) Her shop is called たこ焼き 寛子(ひろこ), Takoyaki Hiroko (Hiroko). The address is 5 Chome-6-3 Tenjinbashi, Kita Ward, Osaka, 530-0041, Japan. If you use subway, get off at Ogimatchi station to get to her store.
If you love toys and anime merch, there are two good spots for these in Osaka; one is the famous Den Den Town and other one is Kiddy Land in Umeda.
You can get to Den Den Town the easiest from Nipponbashi metro station. Just head towards south. You can also walk from Namba to Den Den Town as it's just right the next corner.
Kiddy Land is a bit harder to locate in the gigantic Hankyuu department store (which is like multiple building spreading across the whole Umeda) but you can get there the best from Umeda station. Kiddy Land has lots of toy stores, like Miffy, San-X, and a mixed store of everything cute, and also a Lego store. If you go out from the building from the door next to the Lego store, you can walk a few ten meters to a big Loft-store. It also has some merch, typically San-X and Sanrio and Disney stuff, but on the top floor of the same building there's an anime store. They sell lots of art books, replica swords and also special collectible statues like Japanese deities.
Special mentioning goes to the Namba Daiso (Namba Daiso Nansan-dori). It has 5 floors, all stuff with 100 yens. It's very near Namba metro station, easy to find! If you want to get super fancy and you've got a big budget, the Takashimaya department store is near this Daiso. You can find all kind of food items there, some with ridiculous prices. There's also Daimaru department store in Namba in close proximity - they sell fresh made taiyaki cakes in the bottom floor's food section.
KYOTO
Near Kyoto, you can find a small town of Arashiyama. It is the most well-known for its ancient wooden bridge and bamboo forests. People go just walk around into the bamboo forest. Many movies and TV series has been filmed in that forest. There's a direct train service to Arashiyama from Kyoto. Arashiyama is especially gorgeous at the end of November when the fall has arrived to Kansai area. It's apparently also super pretty during cherry flower season in spring. There are lots of temples in a small area, too, if you want to explore them.
Tumblr media
(Here's the famous bridge).
In Kyoto, there's a design shop of SOU SOU. Now, SOU SOU makes and sells handmade tabi shoes, kimonos, yukatas, string bags, dishware, and wonderful print tabi socks but they also have their own, traditional Japanese café at their Kyoto store called Sou Sou Zaifu. You can get only coffee and matcha tea here - the order is hand made in order in front of you. It's very quiet and idyllic, intimate place. I accidentally went here to find shelter from a rain and it was so lovely. Even the shop itself is worth the visit, if you're interested in fashion and design! Read more here.
Tumblr media
(Sou Sou Zaifu cafe. It seems the same guy is still working here. He was very friendly!)
TOKYO
If you travel in Tokyo, about 45 minutes by train from Tokyo is the city of Saitama. Saitama has a Sayama Hills at Tokorozama, which is also known as The Totoro Forest. Hayao Miyazaki has taken inspiration to Totoro from Sayama Hills. It was hard to find any information of this place in English (and even in Japanese!) in the past, but nowadays there's information in English. Read more here (with a Japanese map)

Heya, I’m EVIL Vivienne Medrano! I saw the TADC parody and rewtweeted it, it’s priceless! totally nailed it😂Anyways, just a quick PSA before heading back to the Sayama hills, I think more content creators should learn to laugh at themselves. I’m aware my show doesn’t appeal to everyone n that’s fine! It’s cringe. It’s not high queer art. My writing is impulsive n it’s not perfect. It’s a goofy passion project I’m making based off the yaoi RP’s I made when I was younger. It is what it is! 💕So that being said, PLEASE don’t harass people if they don’t like my show, or do any weird gatekeeping, it’s never that serious ffff
Thanks for dropping by, Evil Vivienne Medrano! Also, since you're here, please take us back to the good universe with you!

Hidarime Tantei EYE whumplist
Tumblr media
Plot: Tanaka Ainosuke receives a cornea transplant in his impaired left eye from his older brother who mysteriously died. After the operation, Ainosuke starts seeing visions in his left eye. With the help of his high school nurse Hitomi Sayama, Ainosuke starts to investigate his brother's death believing the images he sees are clues to his death.
Tanaka Ainosuke played by Yamada Ryosuke
SP:
Emotional whump: Grieving over brother's death
Kicked from behind, punched in the head by some thugs, falls to the floor, in a daze
Beaten up by classmates, gets kicked while he lays on the floor
Punched by Sensei
Roughened up by Hitman, stomped on his chest. Saved by Sensei
Stumbling down the stairs
Emotional whump: Crying while reminiscing about his brother
Punched by bank robber
held at gunpoint, pistol-whipped and unconscious
Angst; finding out the truth about his brother's death (his brother faked his death)
Held at gunpoint by brother
Ep 01:
Fell off his bicycle and roll down a hill, hitting his head against a fence
Banging his head against the wall in frustration in an attempt to start seeing the visions.
Ep 02:
Beaten up while trying to save his friend from getting kidnapped
Forced by kidnapper to deliver ransom
Shoved against a wall
Witness someone getting shot right in front of him. In shock
Ep 03:
Angst; from the previous episode
Fell off a loading bay, hits his head
Punched in the face
Ep 04:
Nightmares
Fall off bicycle while trying to avoid someone. Hit his head against some metal pole (again)
Get beaten up trying to protect his kohai from crazed concertgoers, unconscious
Wakes up in hospital, in pain
Punched by sensei
Manhandled and pinned down
Threatened by brother
Ep 05:
Manhandled
Runs smack in a door
Ep 06:
Suffers a breakdown
Manhandled to stop him from hurting himself
Shoved to the ground
Collapsed to the ground and crying
Angst; blaming himself for causing the detective's death
Punched in the face
Shaken from deactivating a bomb
Ep 07:
Found unconscious
Wakes up in hospital
His head starts to hurt when he begins to regain some memories from his childhood
Falls down the stair from head hurting too much
Ep 08:
Regain his memory of getting kidnapped as a kid
Experiences head pain and passes out
Emotional whump
Crying and hugging his dead brother (this time for real)
Ainosuke gets hit in the head alot, like at least once an episode. I was wondering when he would get a concussion from all the hitting. Also, Yamada Ryosuke is a really good crier and Yokoyama Yu does really well in evil villain roles.
Saddest scene in my opinion: Ainosuke telling Yumehito (the brother) that he is the only family he has, and Yumehito dying immediately after that. Not sure Yumehito even heard what Ainosuke said.

狭山丘陵・狭山湖外周道路のトレッキング Walk through the Sayama hills (The Forest of Totoro, Studio Ghibli )  , Japan
名前が紛らわしいのですが、東京都側にあるのが村山貯水池 Murayama Reservoir(通称 多摩湖 Tama Lake)です。「村山」は旧地名の「村山郷」だそうです。埼玉県側にあるのが、山口貯水池 Yamaguchi Reservoir(通称 狭山湖 Sayama Lake)です。

Translation Poll
Hello! I would like to once again ask you all’s opinions on the next Character Story translations, because apart from the Akiyama one/s I think all the cards voted on last time have been translated, and I am once more undecided which one to choose next in between RGGO Events esp with classes ending soon ^^; the cards I have so far are:
Haruka (2005) - 2005. Haruka comes to Kamurocho to find her mom, but instead gets roped into helping adults with their problems
Kashiwagi (1988) - 1988. Kashiwagi’s favorite noodle place is at risk of getting landgrabbed so he attempts to save it, only to find out that it was Dojima who ordered the landgrabbing
Kazama (1993) - 1993. Kazama’s favorite son gets kidnapped by the Snake Flower Triad so he goes orders and kicks Kashiwagi and Nishiki’s asses to save him
Kazuki - no year. Stardust is very successful, but because of it Kazuki has a stalker creeping on him. He, Yuya, and some random host work together to track down the stalker
Kiryu (1988) and/or Kiryu (Decisive/Final Fight) - someone has already translated both, but just in case ya’ll want to see it in my format :D
Nishikiyama (1988) - maybe 1988. Nishiki meets Reina for the first time and tries to make a deal with Awano to leave her bar alone
Majima (1988) - 1987-ish. Majima is freshly released from The Hole and is tasked to build up The Grand so he can return to the Tojo Clan
Majima (2006) - 2006. As newly-made civilians, Majima and Nishida make plans for the construction of Kamurocho Hills
Ryuji - 2005. Ryuji learns about the existence of the Dragon of Dojima after the Millenium Tower’s first explosion and craves violence because of it. This one is halfway done before I abandoned it because I got frustrated from all the Kansai sdhfjskds but I am willing to pick it back up again XD
Also, prior to the Minami and 2nd Nishida one yesterday, I never considered the character cards that involved meeting Ichiban in ~2017. But since the 2 turned out actually fun, I am open to requests for those characters if anyone wants them :D The ones I have of non-RGGO exclusive characters include Sayama, Hana, Noa Amon, Nair, Saigo, Komaki, Arase and etc.
Feel free to vote for any in the replies or in the tags! (Also if you don’t want to like get tagged if/when I do the translation of the one you voted on, say so too!)

A discussion on the myth of Totoro
Introduction
Tumblr media
Totoro is a well known Studio Ghibi movie. The plot centres around two young sisters, Satsuki and Mei who had moved to the countryside with their father so that they could stay closer to their ailing mother who was hospitalized. It is also about their relationship with Totoro, a giant mammalian creature who is said to be the guardian spirit of the forest.
Totoro is not a traditional Japanese legend but rather is the brainchild of Miyazaki whose appearance is a mix of a cat, a raccoon and an owl.
However, because of Miyazaki's habit of including hidden meanings in his movies, many viewers have interpreted Totoro as a shinigami (a death God) and have linked the movie to the Sayama incident.
Disclaimer:- Trigger Warning! this blog mentions sensitive topics such as murder and suicide, so if you feel uncomfortable you are free to skip this blog.
The Sayama incident
The Sayama incident took place on May 1 1963, where a sixteen year old girl was kidnapped and later murdered while she was returning from school, the victim also had an elder sister who couldn't get over the grief and had taken her own life in the aftermath, before her (elder sister's) death, it was rumored that she had been hallucinating a cat or a raccoon like creature.
The suspect for the crime was arrested and imprisoned for thirty one years, but no evidence was found against him. He was released in 1994.
Tumblr media
Theories for the statement
The month of May
As mentioned above, the Sayama incident took place on the month of May, the names of the two lead characters are Satsuki and Mei. The word Satsuki refers to the month of May in Japanese while the name of the younger sister Mei sounds like the English word for the month.
Location
The model house of the movie is said to be in Sayama hills, the movie is said to be set in Tokorozawa city which is quite close to the Sayama city, this might be the reason why the film is titled as "My Neighbour Totoro" as both of them are neighbouring towns to each other.
Another evidence which suggests that the location of the movie is in Sayama is this picture, here behind the old lady, there is a box with a label which says "Sayama Tea"
Tumblr media
The third evidence which suggests that the movie took place in the Sayama region is the hospital where the ailing mother was admitted to, the hospital in the movie is known as Shichikoku byourin, the real life counterpart of the hospital Hachikoku byourin is located in the Sayama region.
Tumblr media
Visual hallucinations
Seeing things which do not exist (which is basically having visual hallucinations) is not considered to be a good sign, according to Japanese folklore, having visual hallucinations means that you are very likely to die soon, in the first half of the movie we see both of the sisters seeing Soot spreaders (Susuwatari) when they enter the kitchen and later when they are in the attic of the house, in the movie, they are also the only ones who can see Totoro and the cat bus, although it is said that only children can see such mythical creatures, Kanta (who is also a child character) couldn't see any of them. The sisters being the only ones to see the soot spreaders, Totoro, catbus, etc might indicate that they are soon going to die.
Tumblr media
Walking to the 'death realm'
While Satsuki was searching for Mei, she had found a sandal in a pond, later she walks to the forest and falls into a hole where she requests Totoro to search for her sister. According to the people behind the conspiracy theory, the sandal found floating on the pond symbolises that Mei had drowned, and Satsuki walking into Totoro's burrow is said to symbolise that she took her own life out of grief and walked into the world of the dead. Later, we see both the sisters watching over their ailing mother from a tree outside, which the mother had noticed, this brings us back to the previous point about hallucinations and death.

The Jizo statues
Following up with this theory, Satsuki and Totoro get into the catbus and search for the sister in the world of the 'dead', Mei is finally found weeping beside the Jizo statues, in Japanese Buddhism, Jizo statues represent Jizo Bosatsu a divinity who protects the spirit of unborn children or children who died at a very young age.

The Catbus
The theorists claim that the cat bus is the one way ticket to the world of the dead, which is evident as one of the destination of the catbus read "cemetery/grave".

the lack of shadows
It is usually the dead people who lack shadows, in the last scenes of the movie we see none of the characters have shadows as well.

Theories against the statement
This theory had got so popular that the authorities of Studio Ghibli had to step forward to release a statement in 2007 to debunk the theory. The statement reads:-
"No need to be alarmed. There is absolutely no truth or configuration that Totoros are the Gods of Death or that Mei is dead in My neighbor Totoro." – said Studio Ghibli.
Studio Ghibli had mentioned that because the animators in the end were too lazy so they had forgotten to put shadows and had decided that shadows were unnecessary in the scene.
Miyazaki had mentioned that the two girls are actually based on his friend's daughters.
It is also confirmed that the rumours about the elder sister in the Sayama incident hallucinating raccoon like creatures were wrong.
Sayama Tea is a popular kind of tea in Japan which means that the box behind the old woman might not actually be related to the location of the movie.
The hospital in the movie is located in the Hachikoku area, which is quite far away from the Sayama region, The girls and their father used to go to the hospital by cycling and it's not possible to travel from Sayama to Hachikoku in a cycle.
Conclusion
According to me, I am more leaning against the conspiracy theory, I think if Miyazaki really wanted to connect Totoro with the Sayama incident or basically death in general then I think he might have not dismissed the theory, but he did.
The second reason for me to not believe in the theory has to do more with Kanta. The theory claims that Kanta couldn't see Totoro, but to be fair, as far as I know the movie it rather gives us a vague information about whether Kanta can see Totoro or not, in the early scenes we see Kanta running around, telling Satsuki that she lives in a "haunted house" and his statement gets brushed off by others. But he could have actually been serious about it.
In the last scene, it's not just the two girls lacked shadows, even Kanta didn't have one as well.
The Nanny in the movie mentions that she used to see things like susuwatari, when she was younger. If I see this statement according to the theorists, then the nanny would have been long dead, but this isn't really the case.
