Surprise Bonus Poll #2

Yes, Shinkansen is a specific train in Japan but the name is used often enough to describe any high speed train so it is on this list

I'll try to get round 2 out by next weekend but I make no promises.

I didn't realise this was a tournament until it was too late but an honourable mention if I may:
Sydney Trains (particularly Tangara era T-sets)!
- to start with, they're bi-level suburban/metro electrical multiple unit trains on a heritage network! You don't see that every day!
- the network is huge! Hundreds of stops, nearly 1000000 metres of tracks. That's almost enough to make it a quarter of the way across Australia and this network is only for Sydney itself
- goes over the harbour bridge so you can sit on the top floor and get incredible views of the harbour and the Sydney Opera house
- look at their weird little flat ends they're so skrunkly
- the seats can flip back to front so you can turn them around to sit with your friends
- was originally a bunch of specialised train sets and then they realised this was already the perfect design and converted all the trains to T sets

That's pretty cool!

Here some BART concept art from 1965–I think it’s striking how much the trains and the stations still look like this today. She’s still got a gorgeous retro-futuristic space age look
BART finally opened in 1972, and recently celebrated her 50 year anniversary
Thank you!

did no one submit the DC metro :( i will offer propaganda for it anyway. the old (series 2000) cars have fun colored seats and carpeted floors. the lines reach out well into the suburbs for lots of access. if you like brutalism you will love some of the stations. and we have the tallest escalator in the western hemisphere at wheaton
Now that you mention it, the DC metro is pretty cool (in my opinion) so it is a bit surprising that nobody submitted it.

Vaporetti, Venice, Italy vs Harbour Bus, Copenhagen, Denmark
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vaporetti: The bus boats are so so fun and I love them. Also no traffic jams on the sea
Harbour Bus: It's a boat bus that operates on the same system as the other public transport in Copenhagen. You can stay inside and look out the huge windows or you can stand outside to feel the fresh breeze. It comes every 30 minutes and has a bunch of stops on the most popular parts of Copenhagen but if you want to travel the entire route, which takes around an hour, it only costs 25 dkk or less than $4. Definitely my favourite way of getting around Copenhagen in the summer!

Deutsche Bahn, Germany vs UC Davis Unitrans Bus System, Davis, California
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deutsche Bahn: It's iconic
Unitrans: Unitrans is ran and operated entirely by UC Davis students. It’s one of the few transit systems in the US that has double decker buses that aren’t tour buses. They have antique London double decker buses as well as newer double decker buses in the fleet. The fleet is 95% powered by alternative fuel sources and they recently started transitioning to electric buses. Undergrads don’t have to pay a fare as long as they have a student ID card. Unitrans is accessible to everyone in the Davis community, not just students. Unitrans always gets me wherever I need to go. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
