At Alibris, we love not only books, but also independent bookstores and booksellers. Each independent bookstore – whether a general neighborhood book shop, a specialty bookseller, or a rare book dealer – has its unique personality, and we take pride in supporting these small businesses that share our love for books.
Many independent bookstores are currently in grave danger due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. That is why Alibris has made a donation to the Save Indie Bookstores campaign. We’re a community of booksellers and book lovers and we need to look out for and care for each other, now more than ever. If you are able, please consider making a donation or sharing information about the #SaveIndieBookstores campaign. You can find more info on the campaign, including how to spread the word, on their website, https://www.saveindiebookstores.com.

Hey Clue Crew and other book lovers!
During quarantine, many of us have more free time than we otherwise would. Even if you're working from home, are considered an essential worker, or are still doing online school, hopefully you have some free time to breathe, relax, and gather yourself (while quarantining and social distancing, of course).
But what can you do when you're stuck inside? Read, of course!
If you wanna read your favorite childhood book, your favorite series, an obscure novel, or any other number of books or magazines, you can go straight to the internet to get them. But you don't have to go through big online retailers like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or even Ebay, where workers may be treated poorly or products might be overpriced.
There are plenty of smaller websites you can go through to buy a physical copy of your favorite work while supporting local bookshops!
Your local bookstore
Of course, the first place you should look to support your local bookstore is at the bookstore itself! They may not be considered essential, and the physical store itself may be closed, but you can still buy books from many of them. So if there are any local bookstores that you want to support, go on their website or shoot them an email and see if they’re shipping books or allowing for curbside pickups! Supporting your independent bookstore directly is the absolute best way to show them your appreciation and to keep them afloat during this time, and after.
Bookshop/Indiebound
Bookshop is an online book retailer with national (United States) shipping, that is hoping to extend their shipping to international readers as well (starting with Canada—but there is no known date for international shipping as of yet).
They just started up in early 2020, so they’re fairly new, but they have already raised over $575,000 (as of April 13th) for local bookstores! To add onto that, 10% of non-bookstore sales through Bookshop go to participating American Bookseller Association (ABA) independent bookstores, and 25% of every ABA bookstore sale through the website goes to that bookstore. On top of that, every emailed receipt will have local ABA bookstores listed.
*Indiebound now sends you to Bookshop to buy the books, but it still lets you know about independent bookstores near you.
Libro
If you are not the biggest fan of actually reading but you like audiobooks, support Libro! They are an online audiobook seller, and an alternative to Audible.
If you live in the United States or Canada, you can get a membership and pay $14.99 a month (only 5 cents more than through Audible). With that membership, you’ll get one free book per month, and 30% off additional books each month. OR if you don’t listen to books often enough to want to spend $14.99 per month, you can create a free account and buy books whenever you want. (Keep in mind, though, that audiobooks can be kind of pricey, but they can also be super worth it!)
When you buy books through Libro, you get to choose a local bookstore, and they’ll split the profits with that independent bookstore of your choice!
BINC/Save Indie Bookstores
If you have 50 unread books on your bookshelf and you swear to yourself that you aren’t going to buy anymore books until you’ve finished reading the ones you already have, we all know you’re lying. We’ve all been there. But on the off chance that you actually have the self-discipline to stick to that promise, and you’re interested in helping indie bookstores, go to BINC’s website and make a donation!
BINC (Book Industry Charitable Foundation) helps bookstore and comic book store employees by giving them emergency assistance and scholarships. At the moment, they are doing more than just that, though. They are also making it easier for you to donate to a bookseller and to donate to help an indie bookstore (with Save Indie Bookstores).
Save Indie Bookstores has also started the hashtag #SaveIndieBookstores. Use that hashtag; tag BINC, ABA, and your local bookshop; and say why your local indie bookstore is important to you. It gets other people to know that bookstore’s name, and hopefully it’ll make your friends and followers want to support local bookstores!
Half Price Books
If you don’t have any nearby independent bookstores, you can also look at Half Price Books. Not only do they have stores in 18 states, but they also have an online store, with national (United States) and international (outside of United States) shipping!
Beyond just that, they donate a million+ books every year to organizations (charities, nonprofit organizations, and schools), they try to be as green as possible, if you are a teacher or a librarian you can get 10% off books in-store (unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be applicable right now), and they do a lot to encourage children and teens to read!
Better World Books
Better World Books is an online book retailer with national (United States) and international (outside of United States) shipping!
By supporting them, you may not be supporting a local bookstore, but you are still helping some amazing causes.
They have donated over 26 million books, raised over $28 million dollars for literacy and libraries, and have reused/recycled over 320 million books. They have a grant program that “funds literacy, educational nonprofits, and libraries for special projects,” and every time a customer buys a book, they donate a book to someone in need. On top of that, when you order something from their website, for only a few cents more, you can have your shipping “carbon balanced” as to help alleviate the carbon footprint!
The more you know
Now that you know how to support your local bookstores and your community, you can find a new book (or an old one) while doing just that.
I hope everyone is staying safe at this time, social distancing, only going out for essential reasons, and being compassionate to everyone. Remember to support your local bookstores, but also to support other small, independent, local, or family owned businesses during this time (and always). Know that you are not alone, and that we will get through this together. Stay safe.🖤

James Patterson is donating $500,000 to independent bookstores endangered by coronavirus
In an effort to keep struggling bookstores afloat, author James Patterson is offering some relief in the form of a hefty sum of money.
The bestselling writer of “Along Came a Spider” and “NYPD Red” announced on Thursday a personal donation of $500,000 to help save independent bookstores across the country. Many have been forced to shut their doors indefinitely or drastically change their business models to comply with measures imposed to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Patterson also partnered with Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon and her platform, Reese’s Book Club, the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc) and the American Booksellers Assn. to promote the #SaveIndieBookstores campaign, which will run through April 30. Binc will then distribute the funds raised to eligible independent bookstores.
