4 years ago I performed a one-man show titled Frozen Borders. It was my way of honoring the people, especially the children, who had been locked up in cages at the US southern border, and calling attention to their plight. It was also my first time undertaking a solo creative endeavor of this magnitude. The set was designed by the incredible Margie McDonald (thank you for the inspiration), but the rest was on my shoulders. It was terrifying and invigorating. Other than the teary reading I gave at my grad school commencement back in July, it's been some time since I touched a stage. And since my move to NYC, my writing and voice and creativity haven't received much energy. But this event popping up on my timeline is a powerful reminder that there's a lot I can do with those tools beyond social media posts. But why do we limit our descriptors by the borders of a country that wasn’t even white to begin with? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Let’s ask ourselves the following questions: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❓Why does American culture require you put it first? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❓Why does American culture often require we exclude others entirely? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❓What is to be gained by an emphasis on “minority?” Could it possibly make it easier for us to never question how resources are distributed or what the rules are because “minorities” are a small part of the population anyway, and therefore...don’t matter as much? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❓What things are subtly communicated to all people when we measure everything against whiteness? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❓If you are white, how does the word “minority” subtly reinforce power and superiority? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❓If you are a person of color, how might redefining your position in the world empower you? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Systems and cultures of white supremacy win when marginalized people operate from a seat of powerlessness and a space of scarcity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It benefits from our competition among one another. From us fighting for scraps while they feast in the other room. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I stopped using the word minority a long time ago. And when I’m being specific, I use specific terms. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I say Black when I mean Black, and I use a capital B. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I say BIPOC when I mean all of us but I am specifying those across the globe who tend toward the worst treatment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But no matter what term I use, I am ALWAYS properly positioning us in our power. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There is nothing minor about us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m not here to give you the answers.
