Thinking about how, in the Iliad, we have one living mortal son of Zeus proclaimed as "most dearest" to him (that is, Sarpedon), and one dead mortal son of Zeus also proclaimed the most dearest of his sons born to (mortal) women (that is, Dardanos).
Zeus' love for Dardanos is clearly part of his care for Troy and its royal family now.
So, the thing is then, Sarpedon Zeus wishes to save from the fated moment of his death. Obviously, because he is his son. (And like Hera points out, other gods would love the excuse Zeus would give them if he did save Sarpedon, to save their own sons. Ares almost goes against the currently then in effect edict against divine meddling when he finds out one of his sons have been killed.)
But there's one other person Zeus contemplates upending the laws of cosmos for by saving him from his fated moment of death. Hektor, who isn't his son.
Sure, he says it's because Hektor has been so pious in his sacrifices, but is that really enough, at all, to justify upending the laws of cosmos for mortals?
Hektor is, however, related to one of the mortal sons Zeus loved the most. Dardanos. What if Hektor reminds Zeus of Dardanos, and that (plus the sacrifices) is the actual reason he wants to prolong his life?

I can't believe God saw his beloved Sarpedon struck down and it pained his heart but he didn't lift a finger to save him. I hope this doesn't have any implications for the final book of Tamsyn Muir's hit series The Locked Tomb, Alecto the Ninth, projected release date early 2024

Zeus
Zeus was the king of the Olympian gods and the supreme god in Greek religion. Zues is often referred to as the Father, as the god of thunder, and the 'cloud-gatherer'. Zeus controlled the weather and offered signs and omens. Zeus generally dispensed justice, guaranteeing order amongst both the gods and humanity from his seat high on Mt. Olympus.

Hector: You’re my best friend, I would do anything for you.  Sarpedon: I want you to eat 3 meals a day and have a decent sleep schedule.  Hector: Absolutely not.
