Sarah Strikes Again!

On December 30, the very last research day of 2022, our former long-time graduate intern and social media science editor Sarah Finn (now the Archival Projects Librarian at the Milwaukee Public Library) visited Special Collections to do research with some of our rare or scarce natural history publications including these four early-20th-century biological wall charts. As we unrolled the charts onto our tables (a two-person effort), we were so struck by the exquisite presentation of these invertebrates, we just had to share.

The undated, chromolithographic charts, measuring approximately 135 x 130 cm (4.4 x 4.3 ft.), were produced by Austrian zoologist and natural history artist Paul Pfurtscheller (1855-1927). They form part of his Zoölogische Wandplaten series which began in 1902 and included about 70 charts. The first charts in the series were originally published in Vienna by A. Pichler's Witwe & Sohn, and we hold a few of these earliest charts. The charts shown here, however, were printed in Stuttgart by Adam Gatternicht lithographers for The Hague publisher Martinus Nijhoff, and distributed in the U.S. by a variety of firms, including A.J. Nystrom & Co. in Chicago and Clay-Adams Co. in New York.

EXCLUSIVE : Marvel Studios And Disney Television Animation To Keep Collaborating With Future Non-Marvel Studios Related Animated Series.

Back on 2019 Disney TVA announced Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur, it’s first collaboration with Marvel Animation, this collab promised much since after Disney Branded Television made the choice of cease all production on Disney XD Originals, this included Marvel Animation as all their original shows not related to the MCU ended production.

By 2020-2021 Marvel Television ceased operations due Kevin Feige taking over all the future Live Action Television Productions after his promotion at Marvel leaving Marvel Animation on a limbo as well as their currently running productions (M.O.D.O.K, Hit-Monkey,Spidey And His Amazing Friends and Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur) of that period where on a limbo or straight up canceled (Howard Duck and Tigra And Dazzler)

On 2021 Marvel Studios Vice-President noted that the studio was creating its own animation department to develop animated productions set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following What If...?, leaving the future of Marvel Animation at even more limbo, however following the release of Disney Junior’s Spidey And His Amazing Friends it was confirmed that Marvel Animation was absorbed on Marvel Studios as an additional Animation Division for projects unrelated to the MCU.

Today Disney Branded Television Animation CEO promoted Disney Television Animation Executives Douglas Bensimon and Edward Mejia as VP of current series on the PR besides overseeing development on current series such as episodic comedies by Big City Greens and Phineas And Ferb alumnis and Serialized Series for Disney+, Bensimon will oversee also development on future Marvel Animated Projects on Disney TVA who are not related to the MCU trought Disney Channel,Disney Junior and Disney+.

This means that Feige,Marvel and Disney wants to keep introducing less well know modern Marvel characters (Gwenpool, Squirrel Girl,Tigra,Dazzler,Jeff The LandShark,Lockjaw And The Pet Avengers etc..) to new generations without relaying on the MCU.

IT’S THE BEETLES!

Sarah Finn, our long-time graduate intern and former social media science editor (now Archival Projects Librarian at Milwaukee Public Library) was always deeply intrigued by insects, especially beetles. So, in her honor we present these wood-engraved and chromolithographed beetles from our 1885 three-volume edition of J. G Wood’s Animate Creation, adapted to American zoology by the American physician and zoologist Joseph B. Holder and published in New York by Selmar Hess. The publication, a revision of Wood’s original 1853 British publication The Illustrated Natural History, was originally issued in 60 fascicles, with the chromolithographs printed by the noted Boston lithographing firm L. Prang & Company. Many of the images used in these volumes also appeared in other natural history publications in America and Europe, such as Brehms Thierleben.

Our former long-time Senior Graduate Intern Sarah Finn, now the Archival Projects Librarian at the Milwaukee Public Library (MPL), is currently featured in the online journal Fine Books & Collections as part of their series "Bright Young Librarians." The profile covers her time with UWM Special Collections, her work at MPL, her interests in special collections librarianship, her personal collecting interests in natural history publications, and her thesis work on the 19th-century series The Naturalist’s Library (1833-43).

As you can imagine, we are very proud of our former intern and coworker.
