What if Mike gets Vecna'd and Vecna makes him see Will getting Vecna'd (Will is not really getting Vecna'd) and Mike tries to save fake Will by talking to him (apologizing/confessing his love/sharing memories like in the shed) but it doesn't work, and Mike has to watch fake Will get his bones snapped and crumple to the ground, and then Vecna is in Mike's head saying, "He didn't believe you. Why would he? You ignored him. You hurt him, again and again. You killed him. You did this, Michael." And Mike is just cradling Will's (fake) lifeless body and sobbing into his chest. And then he starts begging for Vecna to just take him too. And then fake Will's body morphs into Vecna and starts doing his creepy hand face thing ya know? And Mike's not even fighting it because he's so confused and still thinks Will really just died.

And meanwhile the real Will is actually watching Mike get Vecna'd for real. Mike starts floating in the air, and Will is losing his shit. He's sobbing and babbling and he basically repeats the van monolgue (not exactly word for word but close) but this time he does say I instead of El.

(I was gonna kill Mike here cuz I'm in a mood rn but I wrote a happy ending instead🙄)

So Mike hears Will's speech. And it works. Mike falls to the ground (bones and eyeballs still in tact) and Will catches him.

And Will is holding Mike's face and sobbing with relief, and Mike is confused because moments ago it was him cradling Will, and Will was gone. So Mike weakly puts a hand on Will's face and asks, "You're okay?" like he can't even believe it. And Will starts laughing tearfully and asks, "You're asking if I'm okay?" And Mike shakes his head in confusion and says, "He made me see-- It was you, I lost you. I really lost you. I keep losing you. It's my fault, I know it is. I-"

And Will touches their foreheads together and says, "You didn't lose me. You never did. You're never going to lose me."

Mike kisses him. Will kisses back, and Mike reaches up to brush away Will's tears without breaking the kiss. And after they finally pull away, they hold each other, for a long time. And then Will says, "I love you," and Mike responds, "I love you too. I-- God that doesn't even feel like enough to describe how I feel about you."

Happily ever after blah blah I'm bored of that happy stuff I'm in an angsty mood rn. But anyway think about it, the shots switching between Will "getting Vecna'd" and Mike getting Vecna'd and maybe we can't tell at first which is real or if they're both real?? That would be cool I think.

have you ever considered that vecna can, and probably will, target them both and the rest of the entire crew? why do you ship byler if you don't think there are signs mike is queer? if you hate mike so much you're so angry at people theorising about a compelling story that involves him, just say so

Nowhere did I suggest I hate Mike. I hate the way people have been characterizing him lately and basically give him the same story as Will. This is something that's been bothering me for months and I only said something because I thought I finally found someone who understood where I was coming from. It's so invalidating to Will's character and disingenuous to Mike's to make their stories basically exactly the same.

Saying Mike's aware of his sexuality, realized his feelings for Will between s3 and s4, struggles with wondering if Will will accept him is WILL'S STORY. And I'm getting so sick of seeing it every single time I browse my tl.

It feels like everyone's so caught up in Mike liking Will they lose sight of everything else about him. Mike's struggles are so different from Will's, and that's a good thing. I wouldn't want them to be the same. I want them to be queer in their own way and have their own thoughts/feeling about their sexuality. I don't want Mike's story to be Will's and I can't understand why everyone else seems like they do.

Mike went his whole life fully believing he was straight. And I don't see any solid evidence proving otherwise. Mike's struggle is coming to accept that he isn't who he thought he was. He's been avoiding and fighting his feelings for a long time now. His story is about how fighting who you are will only make you unhappy, and even though it's an incredibly scary thing to do, accepting your true feelings will ultimately make you happier.

Mike and Will's stories are different because they have different morals. While Mike's is more focused on self-acceptance after being in denial, Will's leans more toward self-love after being abused for his whole life. Will has to fight how much he's internalized everything people have said about him. Will has already had to face the people who hate him for who he is. Mike hasn't experienced homophobic bullying. He doesn't have nearly the same level of internalized homophobia as Will.

And that's what irks me the most is when people will try and say Mike's story revolves around internalized homophobia and that Vecna is going to target him despite the fact there's no clear foreshadowing and no apparent reason for Vecna to do so. I feel like I'm always just seeing the same stuff and no one is branching off to say "hey, maybe Mike won't be targeted and will instead have a more detailed and personal arc about him coming to accept himself and his feelings" instead of "Vecna's gonna torment him with Will" which is literally exactly what they've been foreshadowing will happen to Will.

Making their stories the same just makes it feel like there's a "certain way" to be queer when that's just not true. I want Mike's story to be very different from Will's. I want Mike and Will to have unique struggles. I want two different stories being told to represent how there is no one way to be queer.

Why is that so hard for people to understand?

Byler is endgame, trust me.

It’s the way Mike had lost Will before. In s1 when Will vanished, and then when Mike thought that he was dead. So he had felt the pain that brings losing him. But also he had lost El before, in s1 when she sacrificed herself. So he also knows that pain.

In s2 Mike was so worried about Will, so he spent all season next to him. Also, we have a scene of Mike seeing El and Will leave. It seemed that his expression of worry it’s only for El, but he’s also scared of losing Will again.

in s3 he “lost” El and Will when he fought with them. At the end El and Will move away, and we have another scene where Mike is looking at them driving away. He looks back to Will’s house. We know that he is feeling like he is losing them again.

in s4 we know that Mike felt like he had lost Will, and also that he was scared of losing El. And Will also felt like he was losing Mike slowly. Probably El was feeling similar too, because he never said that he loves her, so in some way she had the impression that she was losing him.

But also Mike had said explicitly that he is scared of losing El in these three seasons, but he hadn’t said out loud that he is also scared of losing Will, but we can infer that this is also true for his actions and his dialogue.

Also Will saying: “It’s because she’s scared of losing you, like you’re scared of losing her.” Will was using El to project his feelings, and even if he thought his last line only applies to Mike’s feelings towards El, It’s not far-fetched to think that this also applies to them. They’re both scared of losing the other.

My point is the clear proof that Mike loves El it’s this fear of losing her, and it’s not subtext he said it out loud. But he also is scared of losing Will, so maybe it hinted that he loves him too (but this is still subtext)

Plus Mike saying to Will “Hawkins is not the same without you.” and to El “I don’t know how to live without you.” He is saying the same thing but in different words.

So I don’t know if Mike had realized his feelings towards Will yet, but we probably we’ll see more of that in s5.

And I think it’s probably that they (byler) end up together for the parallels and some hints in the film language, but also because of the narrative, it seems that Mike and El don’t work together. And even if Mike loves her, we know another conflict between them is that he views her as a superhero, and El’s arc is about accepting herself as a whole, not as a monster nor a superhero either. Another reason, Mike wants to feel needed, but maybe that’s not the kind of love that El wants.

And also will said “It’s just, she’s so different from other people, and when you’re different sometimes you feel like a mistake. But you make her feel like she’s not a mistake at all. Like she’s better for being different.” That’s how Will feels, but I don’t think this can apply to El, because in their fight El told Mike that he doesn’t know what is being different and that he made her feels like she was a monster.

So... to me s4 confirmed us that Will is in love with Mike, hinted us that Mike reciprocate his feelings (i feel like i lost you. it’s not the same without you), and yes even if there’s love between El and Mike, they don’t work together.

it's been talked about before but it really was an odd writing decision to not have Mike with El when she was brought to the Nina base. Like Dr. Owens was part of that project and in S2 he let Mike in the Hawkins Lab with Will even though he wasn't family so it's not like there hasn't been precedent.

For a MiIeven storyline, it would have made more sense to have Mike come with El to the base so she could have emotional support as she relives traumatic memories in the tank. And narratively, there would have been a lot more opportunities to show Mike's seeming insecurity about El not needing him anymore. Plus, Brenner's betrayal could have included holding Mike hostage for even more drama romance points.

This wouldn't even have impacted the role left to Will/Jonathan/Argyle because they still could have traveled to get Mike and El back.. If the storyline was written to have Mike and El together, we wouldn't have needed to see Will have his Sad Gay Kid Emmy Bait moment in the van to prop up Mike and El's relationship because Mike and El could have fixed their relationship on their own.

I don't want to say that this was on purpose to give opportunities for Byler (the subtext confession, and Mike's monologue as a response to this coded confession) because Idk if I trust the writers that much after not even getting a scene with Will explicitly talking about his feelings for Mike. But if they're still playing the extremely slow burn game, the narrative decisions were to keep Mike and El apart while keeping Mike and Will together, to have Mike's monologue contradict S1 events, to have El and Mike not even talk about his ILY after the fact, to have Will confess in code to Mike, to have Mike's monologue as a direct response to this coded confession, to have Will (for the first time) lie to Mike about the painting, and to have this be a lie that can be easily debunked the first chance Mike talks to El about it.

Like, listen. S5 is going to need a goddamn miracle to satisfyingly make up for the sea of subtext (and no actual text) and events that S4 left us with wrt Byler. I'm not holding my breath for the follow-through, but I did once believe they would only make things explicit in the text during S5. And S4 has given enough material for that to happen.

even though the weird ass side hug from mike wheeler at the start of s4 hurt my hEART, i would like to point out that it was as a huge win for byler

if you watch that scene through the lens of mike = heterosexual, it genuinely makes no sense. here is this “straight” guy reuniting with his childhood best friend after not seeing him for a YEAR and he… awkwardly side-steps his hug? seems immediately put out and annoyed? shows no sign of excitement or joy at all?? and he genuinely looks as if he is intentionally putting on a mask of indifference and slight annoyance during their interaction

and consider that will has literally not done anything wrong at that point - my boy has barely said a word. his response to seeing mike is perfectly reasonable for a friend! and from straight-mike’s perspective, there should be no reason to immediately seem uncomfortable and hostile

as a viewer the first time around, it seems like mike must have some beef with will about something that happened before this interaction, and so it’s easy to write this away as something that will be explained later, since we the viewers are obviously missing a piece of the puzzle

except

IT DOESNT GET EXPLAINED

sure will and mike argue about will “moping and ruining the day” (👀 okay mike) but there is no explicit further discussion or explanation as to why mike acted this way before will did literally anything

it makes no sense.

unless… you watch this scene through the lens of mike being queer

if mike is queer and had feelings for will in the past, this year apart has probably caused him to super repress those feelings and try to forget about them

thus, reuniting with will is probably really scary for mike as he obviously doesn’t want to have or confront those feelings due to his good ol’ ✨internalized homophobia✨

and so instead he goes into no homo damage control mode and becomes I Am Definitely StraightTM mike wheeler, completely overplaying heterosexuality by avoiding physical affection and attempting to not show any interest whatsoever in will

however, ofc most real straight people don’t act like this when reuniting w their best friend (i feel like even if mike were a super dude bro he would at least like do the high-five-smack-back-straight-dude-thing with will or show some sort of mild excitement) and so mikes behavior comes across really strange (and really 💅) to the audience

conclusion: we see you mike 👀

someone pointed out that will was the one, not mike, that tried to take off El's shock collar and that got me thinking. I don't think this necessarily makes Mike a bad person or anything but for someone who's supposedly in love with El to the point of obsession(according to some of the audience, and this isn't healthy behavior at all btw) it's so weird that he's just strangely ignorant when it comes to her struggles even when she vocalizes them to him in a straight forward fashion. Ex; El literally tells him that she feels like he only loves her for her powers after he calls her incredible and a superhero and then during his infamous monologue he proceeds to only talk about her powers and how incredible she is (even though right before he said "I love you with or without your powers"???) And again, I don't think this makes him a bad person, in fact I think this makes sense for Mike and El. They're only 15 and they've been in this relationship since they were 12(?). Of course their communication is going to be dogshit; this plus the fact that their whole relationship is built on trauma(which famously makes for superrrrrr healthy relationships), El is seemingly the only one who ever wants to acknowledge any problems they have, and Mike's hero idolization/savior complex, it just makes it 10x worse. Idk if any of that makes sense and I don't think this is a super groundbreaking take or anything but that's basically summarizes my problems w their relationship.

If you ever doubt of Byler being endgame remember that:

- crazy together scene was written even before season 1 was released

- El was supposed to d1e in that season

- byler has been paralleled multiple times with canon healthy couples, while milev3n has been paralelled to unhappy couples.

- asking Will to be his friend was the best thing Mike has ever done. he chose it. it was not just dumb luck.

- Will's first word to Mike was "yes", while El's first word to Mike was "no".

- They've been music and color coded throughout the whole series.

this is still relevant since Blue and Yellow code had been brought up again after s4v2 was released.

all the character's official playlists were deleted from spotify except for Mike and Will's ones respectively.

- Hawkins is not the same for Mike without Will.

- Mike and Will's friendship had always received a diferent treatment in the series, like something apart, something else.

- Mike's room/basement walls are full of Will's art.

- Mike always prioritized Will before anyone. He always apologized to Will first, he always made sure Will was okay first.

- s5 is going to include many season 2 ideas and follow season 1 dynamic. we all know what that means.

- Byler had even been developed in a deeper way in official COMICS AND VIDEOGAMES.

- Mike called Will a lot of times while he was in California, even when nobody called back.

- Mike cannot have a strong relationship with Will and El at the same time, curiously, it's always one or the other. The difference is that, one of them is not as healthy as it should be, even when they're -in a good moment-

- I've mentioned a lot of Mike's stuff about his feelings for Will when the one who's supposed to be canonically in love is Will lmao. There's like literally a ton of proof that Mike is in love with Will and... barely any of Will being in love with Mike.

- no words just this scene

- Mike wouldn't have said ILY to El if Will didn't impulse him to.

- Mike actually loves Will's feelings, his needing and his fear of losing him. Mike was impulsed by those feelings, his whole monologue/confession was just a response to them.

- Official sources in social media like Netflix posted/commented many byler hints after season 4 was released. (and they also post some stuff shitting on milev3n, it's just interesting..🤨)

- Byler followed so many romantic tropes since season 3: interrumptions, miscommunication, uncertainty, denial, love triangles, etc. They wouldn't have done this much for a friendship.

plus: they wouldn't have spent so much money in those scenes and scenery for nothing.

- season 3 finale. 4 pics one word: realization.

- mike & el are NOT in good terms at the end of s4. or at least, not romantically, while Mike & Will finally got as close as how they were before.

- finn & noah had to do a CHEMISTRY TEST for stranger things, something that they didn't had to do with Caleb or Gaten.

Funniest mileven arguments to why byler won’t be endgame

I’m sorry if there’s any grammar errors or mistakes, I wrote this angrily at 2 am when I couldn’t sleep.

1. “Its the 80’s”- as if there isn’t any movies that have happy queer endings that were made/set in the 80’s, yall are just lazy and don’t want to actually do any research.

2. “It’s a Netflix original”- ok? And? Like we literally get a new mlm/queer show on Netflix every year, byler is a mlm relationship which Netflix has a lot of, young royals, heartstopper??? Are you guys ok?

3. “Cuz it’s too popular” - we already have over two queer confirmed characters in stranger things, the show that’s about fighting forced conformity ?? The show that focuses on nerds, losers and people that don’t ‘fit in’ ? And y’all find it so hard to see ur two main characters being gay? Read the room respectfully.

4. “It’s one sided” - if it was one sided they would make Mike tell Will he doesn’t like him in s3 and give Will a new love interest in s4 (it has been confirmed that there will be no new characters in s5 and that the producers want every character to have their ‘perfect ending’) Will believed he was a mistake and thought he wouldn’t fall in love, because he is queer so he most definitely will have a queer love interest and it will be Mike.

5. “Mike is in love with el”- is he tho? He never actually said he loved her to her face without the world and her life depending on it, he’s been pressured to say it twice and when she told him she loves him back the man didn’t look happy but conflicted.

6. “Mileven endgame” - it’s really not, the amount of symbolism that points to their downfall (such as everyone calling them the ‘star crossed lovers’ which are basically lovers deemed to fail, and more) is HUGE, they have too many familial parallels it’s insane, why parallel the it couple with family themes and relationships? Another problem I have with this it’s the fact that it’s very rare for the first ‘original’ pairings to stay together till the end of the show (like with Bob and Joyce or Steve and Nancy)

7. “Byler wouldn’t make sense to the plot”- watch the show again, just because somethings more subtle, doesn’t mean it’s not there, y’all will always say that about queer relationships but whenever u guys see a straight relationship in these subtle moments you jump into conclusions that they might end up together, it’s called being a hypocrite.

8. “Mike isn’t gay” - it’s what he’s been telling himself too, the guy was obviously made fun of and called slurs like Will, everyone already thought and knew their relationship was ‘special’ and everyone suspected something, that’s why Mikes own dad was surprised and said “our son, with a girl?” Also your so called straight Mike has a room filled with pictures and posters of buff men, he’s never shown any interest in girls or women (except el who’s been said, looked like a boy in s1) not to mention the first song on his official Spotify playlist being “small town boy” (yk the song about a young gay man running away from his homophobic small town??).

9. Mikes love confession- if u call that a love confession I wouldn’t wanna date u brother, he was pushed to say ily by Will, the same Will that was in the frame of Mike lying when he said that his life “started” when he found El in the woods, which was obviously a lie because Mike called El a weapon and said he’ll “send her back to pennhurst or wherever she comes from” after they found her, also if the love confession was honest why would El be still upset with Mike and not talk to him after??

10. “El wasn’t upset at Mike but was sad about Max” - me when I’m in denial, she wasn’t sad about Max until she found the coke bottle underneath her bed, then we get the flashbacks of her and Max having fun in s3, she wasn’t thinking abt Max before that, its called common sense and logical thinking skills.

11. “There would be no time for byler to develop in s5” - it might seem crazy what I’m about to say, they were literally childhood best friends and it’s been confirmed that Will had a crush on Mike since s1, they literally started to build their romantic relationship MORE in s4, with all the ‘[emotional, tender music playing]’ and parallels between byler and jancy, also even if they haven’t started to build their relationship up in a romantic way in s4, y’all remember how in less than a season Jonathan and Nancy slept together or how Max and Lucas got together in a spawn of a season (mind u they met in the same season). Byler knows each other since little kids and always had potential y’all are just in denial.

12. “Why make Mike queer” - why not? Do y’all actually believe that one of the main characters plot line is just about getting with the girl at the end? Even if it was (which lets be so fr now) why would Mike get with El from the first season (they kissed in s1 and basically u can count that as they’re together wtv) if that was his main goal as a character? Well written shows have something called a “character development” which the producers of st love apparently, so why make Mike just a bland character that just gets with the main girl character, and why have El date the first guy she ever met, I just think it would be very shallow.

That’s all, this was written in a silly way cuz it’s basically me talking to myself, it’s okay if u ship mileven I just really don’t like disrespectful fans that yell at bylers and call the ship disgusting, I don’t care about what who ships as long as we all just have fun and not yell at each other 🫶🏻

omfg my new favorite thing ramen noodles are saying is that we’re misogynistic towards el bc we’re “saying that a woman can’t be badass and independent while also in a relationship”

ummm no i would love it if el had a significant other and i’m kinda sad there prob won’t be time for it s5. there is nothing i want more for my girl el hopper than to see her dating someone who treats her like max does—affirming, respecting her individuality, ardent and affectionate.

i’m gonna take off my byler goggles for this one just to prove a point.

i don’t want el to date mike wheeler bc:

1. she didn’t know what a friend was when she met mike. be serious

2. she thought he would be “like her brother” and he had to explain to her that she wouldn’t be his sister bc he liked her (lol that felt so gross to type out)

3. i adore mike but he was honestly a major dick in rink o mania—he hadn’t seen her in 185 days but mostly paid attention to how will was acting; knows she has a background of trauma but still didn’t do much to defend her from her bullies; and even knowing el’s trauma background & knowing that angela was an aggressive bully, he judged the shit out of el for attacking angela and didn’t even give her a chance to explain herself as to why it happened. he then exposed her for it in front of joyce for no reason like that was so unnecessary. like bro this was your first day seeing her in months please get your act together >:(

4. he invalidated her whole experience of being bullied: “you can’t let these mouthbreathers ruin you—ruin us!” huh???? this isn’t about u my brother in christ?? and el didn’t “let” anyone do anything she was a victim of bullying?

5. he couldn’t say “i love you” to her when she was crying and practically begging him to, and also, he can’t even write it and we still have yet to see him write it. it would’ve been cute to see a gift at the end from mike to el or a little note that said “love, mike” but nah, i bet you a million dollars this guy still cannot write it.

a couple months ago I still lurked on sttwt and under one byler tweet there was this guy who asked why people think that will and mike are going to end up together, like it was a genuine question. and in his replies there was this byler shipper who for some reason started talking about hearts in finn's eyes in the van scene (not even finn's enamoured expression but like literal hearts made out of reflection of light 😭) I believe a lot of people from broader fandom think that bylers are delusional partly because a lot of bylers themselves don't understand why byler is going to be endgame and they talk about little details instead of talking about the storyline/writing/etc.

YESSS ive talked about this before but there’s this huge problem with bylers (especially on twt) not really having a full grasp on the narrative and that’s why they’re always losing confidence because it’s exactly as you said, they hold on to minute tiny details rather than the writing itself 😭 like its fine to look for proof in background details but i wish people stopped using them as their main points of evidence yk? it also feels silly to try convincing people with them cause some of them only make sense in the context of being deep into byler lore. instead of doing that i think its better to just explain why byler narratively makes sense, like the way the painting plot will play out in s5 or how will’s feelings for mike were developed in the same season as mike struggling to say ily to el. sorry but people are most likely not going to immediately believe us if we just talk about, lets say, closet imagery, but if we bring up how specific narrative/writing choices only make sense if they point to byler endgame then people might be more open to its possibility.

i hate twitter and the fandom there gets harder to interact with as time goes on. i want to respect peoples interpretation of the show and characters bc we really wont know who is correct or not until s5 comes out. but damn ... you get people over there upset for saying 'yknow ... maybe byler will not be this super cute heartstopper romance bc yknow ... apocalypse, IH, evil villain, stress levels up the roof, HORROR'

if you do believe that, thats ok but i urge you to visit the stuff that the duffers draw inspo from to be prepared bc like ... some people there are going to be legitimately traumatized by the storyline.

ultimately st is a happy story and it is going to end well, i do believe that. but before that happens, its gonna be hard.

the painting reveal, sure, theres a chance that the duffers go for a more tame scene with that. maybe its more tender and mike is going to be nice to will and maybe i am the one who is wrong and its not like how im perceiving its going to be.

but maybe im right when i say that "yeah thats the moment we're gonna see how bad mike's IH actually is ..." which means a fight and a really bad one at that.

maybe in s4 his reaction would've been far more positive but in s5 ...? with the end of the world, him saying ily to el bc of the painting, feeling responsible for her but defeated at the same time, the gates of hell opened, hellfire club being blamed, witch hunt ensuing, eddie dying, worried about wills safety, thinking romance with will atp will put both of them in danger but wanting to pursue it, etc etc ... i have a hard time picturing mike being all happy and giddy off the bat. its going to take him a bit to process it in a healthy way especially with how he's kept his feelings and trauma bottled up all this time.

Maybe will forced mike to confess to him so now he can move on from him. It’s kinda sad but maybe in season 5 he will find a love interest that loves him back! Also why continuing to ship Byler if Mike doesn’t give a shit about will it doesn’t make sense. It’s better if Will moves on.

I totally respect this view but... Personally I don't see it that way at all.

I don't think Will was saying his confession as a way to move on, and I definitely don't think we got the promised "understanding and acceptance" that would be necessary for him to move on.

I also don't think during Mileven ILY scene that Will was thinking about his own feelings or trying to get closure -- he was wholly in the moment just doing what he thought would help save his sister and help his best friend. Because Will is canonically super selfless, especially when it comes to his own feelings ("I deserved it." / "You don't have to say anything." / etc).

The thing is, they practically wrote in the fact that Will won't get over Mike any time soon. [I] need you, Mike. And [I] always will. They canonized Will's "crush" on Mike and brought it to the forefront of season 4 for a reason, and the emphasis shows it's more than a crush, it's deeper than that. He cares about Mike--and Eleven--so much that he will put their feelings and their relationship ahead of his own.

In the words of Eddie Munson, that's as much of a sign of unambiguous true love as these eyes have ever seen.

Personally? I won't stop shipping Byler until Will stops loving Mike. If s5 starts with a time skip and Will is over Mike, if Will gets a love interest, I will happily ship Will with whatever happiness he wants. But for now?

I'll keep these lights on 'til the day I die if I think there's even a chance that Canon Byler is still out there.
