Hahaha I remember the first time I found out he was actually around his 30s when I was still following the old anime series for Rurouni Kenshin back in the 90s. I was really surprised. And Kaoru is 17 I believe around this time.
But maaan... This brings back so many fond memories. I'm so happy they remade this anime. This was one of my childhood faves and Kenshin was one of my anime crushes back then ☺️
I MISSED HIS "ORO" MOMENTS ❤️

I hope they don't animate Rurouni Kenshin's Remembrance arc and Twilight's childhood at the same time.
I don't think my heart could take both sad pasts at around the same time.
(most likely not since Remembrance arc would be animated after the Kyoto arc and Kyoto arc is maybe next year so that would make the Jinchu arc/Remembrance arc most likely to be animated the year after while Twilight's childhood is not too far after the Cruise arc and Cruise arc is being animated this year so maybe we get Twilight's childhood animated next year?)

Talking about Rurouni Kenshin 2023
I'm going to write a lot and I might have a bit of spoiler!!!
As a fan of Rurouni Kenshin from 1996, and now that a new adaptation came out this year I wanted to give a little opinion of my own, focusing on the comparisons I've seen of the current animated version with the 96 version.
However, I think that in order to see and enjoy both adaptations it is necessary to clarify several points, and the first of them is the intention behind each adaptation and which points can be compared and which others cannot.
Clearly, both adaptations have been made under different directions, by different companies and different times, aimed at different target audiences. And this can be clearly reflected from the first chapters aired to date (at the time of writing this review). Actually, I don't want to talk in depth about Jin-e Udo's arc yet, since in anime 2023 the battle between them and several of the arcs that are still to be broadcasted have not been released yet, but I think episode 6- Kurogasa, serves to illustrate how the current adaptation seeks to move away from its 96 counterpart despite being the chapters with less changes from each other.
To begin with, the contextualization and presentation of characters...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While in both the manga and the anime 2023, we are given a little contextualization of the situation. We are not introduced to Mr. Tani, the person Kenshin must protect at the request of one of the policemen, he is a rather arrogant man who currently holds a political office so he has enough money at his disposal to hire many men to protect them against the threat of an assassin. Although, at the beginning he refuses with arrogance, when Kenshin reminds him how he protected him during the Bakumatsu, Mr. Tani's expression changes radically, adding that all his bodyguards are useless since Sanosuke himself has crushed them in previous times.
Much of this context is omitted in the 1996 version, and it is only pointed out that Kenshin has to go to protect Lord Tani, in the face of Kurogasa's threat.
Also the presentation of Jin-e are very different proposals. In the original version, it is done from the viewer's point of view. We can see Jin-e ruthlessly murdering the guards until he appears in the room. In that way, we are introduced how this is a ruthless killer who makes his way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While in the 2023 version (and in the manga) it is left to the expectation. Neither Sano nor Kenshin see Jin-e killing directly, they only see the bodies he has left in his path until he makes a surprising presence in the room just when he attacks one of the bodyguards and that is when we see him kill the bodyguards.
Here we see how the approach of both anime is very different. While the original version, seeks to focus more on the killer Kenshin will face and the combat, to convey to the viewer the intimidating feeling of a new enemy. The current version, focuses more on setting the context and showing us the relationship Kenshin has had in the past during the battles. Each chapter shows us key pieces of what Kenshin was like during his Hitokiri era, as well as how those who participated in the war relate to the current government and Meji era.
In Rurouni Kenshin the social and political context is one of the bases of its story, as it is directly inspired by real events. While the character of Lord Tani is irrelevant in many ways. It serves to expose once again that many of those who participated in the war took positions of importance in politics and economics, becoming arrogant people who use power to their convenience. Something Kenshin is against.
Now, really my point is not to talk about which version is better or worse....or if the current version is better for being faithful to the manga or if it is a bad adaptation for not being the same as the 90's version.
But to understand that the original version was never intended to be 100% faithful to the manga, but rather an interpretation using the manga as a guide. The fundamental elements of the manga are respected and maintained, at the same time subtle and continuous changes are made that change the story. I understand that many of these changes are not really important but substantially give a very different interpretation at the narrative level. While this adaptation seeks to be faithful to the manga, following almost in its entirety the events that the original format raised.
The remake is not a remastering of the '96 anime, but rather an adaptation completely detached from its predecessor to stick only to the manga. And this can be reflected in all the number of decisions that the direction has had, from not using the original voice cast, the change in the drawing style, not using the (iconic) soundtrack of the original, not remastering the ending and opening version. Evidently, the current version aims to capture a more current audience, proposing a version that is more attached to modernity. The goal in itself is not to appeal to nostalgia to please the established fandom, but to capture a new one that may or may not have seen the original. And that's why I think many people don't like the differences between the two adaptations.
In my opinion, I don't see anything wrong with the adaptations being different. In fact, I think to a certain extent it's good that they don't play it safe by copying what the '96 anime achieved.
However, despite how faithful the Remake is to the manga, I consider that it has several points to be solved that makes it subtract points.
For starters, several of the comedy scenes that ARE in the manga are omitted. (There are scenes that are adapted while others are omitted) Which, well… I understand the desire to stick to a serious tone and rhythm, I don't pretend that they add comic scenes that are not necessary. But the comedy in the manga was not randomly placed, but emphasized the dynamic between the characters and gave more contrast to Kenshin's personality which is sweet, relaxed and somewhat silly, contrary to his Battousai personality. Subtle details like Kenshin ready to unsheathe the sword, but seeing Kaoru they end up cutting their finger, I think details that make the difference.
Not to mention that really the OST is unremarkable. It's not bad, but it doesn't usually stand out with the scene. I can understand not recycling the previous one, but a new one could be proposed to go with a better scene.
Most importantly, do not raise new technical resources:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just like the OST, I really don't think that making a carbon copy of the '96 work is the best thing to do. But it would be great if, while not using the same techniques, they at least come up with some new ones.
In '96, the change of color, the use of negative, slow motion, worked to make the dramatic scenes stand out. The drama was intended to be more impactful and contrasting with the comedy and serenity of the rest of the scene. While in the current version (2023), we can see Kenshin's face very well drawn, his anger as Battousai is clearly seen, but there is a lack of ambience that envelops us in the tragic atmosphere as Kaoru's kidnapping. Although these are just details, I hope that for future fights they will focus on giving more emphasis to the combats and manage to transmit the epicness of this work.
Finally, I think that the 1996 adaptation is an incredible work that unfortunately was not completed, and really as a fan of the original anime and manga I think it is worth giving a chance to the remake that shows a lot of potential. The voice cast seems very good (I personally like the new voice of Kenshin) and the animation is quite fluid, and I like the drawing style, however, it has some considerable details to be polished. Although at the moment there are very few chapters broadcasted, there is still a long way to go to see the best fights. The point of comparing is in a constructive way to see those details that can or could have been better in both adaptations, without detracting from the achievements that each one has. Since both stand out in very different ways.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
tagged by @usereddie
How many works do you have on ao3?
14.
What's your total ao3 word count?
102,977
What fandoms do you write for?
911 and once, a lifetime ago, The Raven Cycle.
Top five fics by kudos:
making love to the flashes
maybe love won't let you down
my hearts a secret (tell me you'll keep it)
all i know since yesterday
things you don't say reach me somehow anyway
Do you respond to comments?
i do some of the time! I usually will respond to longer comments if I have something to say.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
it's some things fall when they're meant to fall, but i'm incapable of writing angsty endings so now that fic has two more chapters to come and will (spoilers) end happily.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
they all have pretty happy endings so it's hard to pick the happiEST ending but maybe things you don't say because that's the only fic I can think of that ends on an actual "I love you."
Do you get hate on fics?
no thankfully! I think i got one semi-rude comment on my first smut fic but that's about it.
Do you write smut?
i sure do.
Craziest crossover:
I don't write crossovers!
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that I'm aware of.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
not that I know of!
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
no but I still think about The Ultimatum AU that @colonoscopys and I plotted together in a brief bout of reality TV induced insanity.
All time favorite ship?
it WAS Stucky and they will always hold a very special and sacred place in my heart but honestly...........it's Buddie.
What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I am full of deranged optimism and truly believe i WILL someday finish all my WIPs :)
right now roommates fic is the one that haunts me the most.
What are your writing strengths?
dialogue, characterization, writing about people pining, moving between different tones (silly, heartfelt, horny, angsty, etc)
What are your writing weaknesses?
writing any kind of scene that's not just two people talking to each other LMAO.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
I never write it myself because I only speak one language (😭) but it's cool to see in other fics when it makes sense for the story!
First fandom you wrote in?
Rurouni Kenshin 😊 I was 12.
Favorite fic you've written?
It's a tie between maybe love won't let you down and making love to the flashes. These also happen to be my most popular fics and I feel like it's because you can tell how much fun I had writing them (although two very different kinds of fun).

Before Sannan had a route, my heart went to Hijikata. I still think the latter has the most interesting and complete of routes (not only is he the "canonical" in anime, he outlives many of the other Shinsengumi in history, being alive all the way up to the end of the Boshin War.)
Tumblr media
Conversely, Sannan, or Yamagami Keisuke, is the first of the Shinsengumi core members to die in history. He's also considered to be among the most principled of the lot, if a little uptight compared to the rural stock most of the other members come from.
(As an aside: I have an interest in feudal Japanese history that goes beyond my love for Hakuouki, my primary interest being in the Sengoku or Warring States period. But I do credit the otome game for getting me truly interested in the period between the Black Ships / Commodore Perry's arrival and the start of the Meiji Restoration. So my fansploding over Sannan will definitely be interspersed with thoughts of the historic events, people, and places Hakuoki is based on.)
My knowledge of the historical Sannan is why I always side-eyed at the idea that he's just a purely evil and unlikable character in the game. I know it can depend a LOT on the route you play, but...
[I guess it is spoiler time now, specifically for Sannan and Heisuke routes]
...pretty much every character in the game has at least *some* basis in known history, albeit highly romanticized (duh). So it makes way more sense to me for Sannan's cold, calculating, and ruthless attitude to be only one part of his truth, and for his deep love and loyalty to the Shinsengumi (and Chizuru!!) to feature strongly in his motivations under the surface.
I also love that while he's terribly antagonistic in Heisuke's route, he actually subverts this in his own route by *pretending* to kill him to sell his strategy to get closer to Yukimura Kodo.
I won't entirely absolve Sannan because he does do some abjectly awful things, even in his route. Honestly, that's true of the historical Shinsengumi as a whole, which is why their reputation can range from the villainous (see: Rurouni Kenshin, minus Harada of course--he's a good boy in all media afaik) to the heroic but ultimately tragic (see: the NHK Shinsengumi! taiga drama, which generally paints them in a positive light, but does not shy from portraying when their members make questionable decisions.) I get why he thought he had to keep Chizuru in the dark about his plans, but I do think he could have trusted her more to hold up her end of things if they worked together.
Honestly, I think Sannan's depression (as someone quite familiar with that particular psychological condition, I can say with confidence he definitely suffered it, especially when triggered by feeling worthless) makes it hard for him to accept that someone could love him enough to follow him boldly into his schemes while trusting he will not fall completely. The game makes it clear that Chizuru's love is a deciding factor when it comes to him taking a less heinous path toward finding a true purpose in life. She ensures his despair and desperation do not swallow him whole, both due to the chance for redemption she represents for him, and because her blood makes it possible for him to do more for longer without losing his sanity to the Ochimizu.
On the other hand, the dark, twisted side of him that leads him to decide that forcing a kiss on Sen to turn her into a demon rasetsu is a good idea (for example) is still part of who he is. That is something much harder to accept. He can be deliberately cruel, if only to keep people at arms length so he can keep wallowing in his pain, and he can be terrible at considering the human factor in the schemes within schemes he plots. At his worst, he discards emotions and morality as a hindrance to his goals, and that's just not a good way to handle things. He should not be given a free pass to be abusive, no matter if it is due to his fragile self-esteem, his fear of letting people too close, or his tendency to hyperfocus on the endgame.
I think all of us have the potential to rise or fall depending on our circumstances--our genetics, where we were born, how our parents/guardians raised us, important people in our lives, life-altering events that befall us. As a multiply marginalized person, I drew the short straw in many ways, but I am extremely fortunate to have a supportive spouse who knows me like no one else, whom I can trust with my life. Genuine love from a worthy life partner can truly be transformative if you are fortunate to find it. It's not the only way to reach a state of greater happiness and stability, but it is *A* way, and I choose to believe it works wonderfully for Sannan and Chizuru.
Maybe it's cliche to say he just needs love. Haha. But he definitely needs help avoiding the pitfall of devaluing himself and others so much that the kinder, gentler parts of his nature are smothered.

I do wanna circle back to a big root, Oda's history as a Rurouni Kenshin assistant is a huge thing to keep in mind with Kiku's role in all this. She's such a huge, blatant callback to both the iconic protagonist and Oda's own contribution. But an evolution of both. Really one of the coolest things about Kiku. A much more mature trans narrative than Kamatari who wasn't bad to begin with, and for Himura...to me the big one is that Kiku's not a stupid pacifist. It's one of the things I love about her and a fun nudge with being so ladylike; it's not some grandiose oath she always keeps. Kiku's just by nature sweet & gentle but practical. She'll use the minimum necessary force.
The other one to me though is this. I'll try to keep it vague enough it's not a huge Kenshin spoiler because I don't want to delve too deep about the reasons anyways. The point is that a core part of Himura Kenshin's emotional journey involves this "Fallen Village." Much like Okobore Town, these lawless slums aren't uncommon, they're drawing from history, but this is not some minor moment and it's echoed in how Kiku's story begins. The difference in tone is the key here:
Tumblr media
For Kenshin, it's his lowest point. The fallen village is depressing, save for its Yasu-type geezer. Locking his sword away and just sitting there, Himura completely loses himself in visions of hell and self loathing. Kiku? She puts her sword aside because she didn't really need it. Okobore is one of the places we see her at her happiest. That's her story structure, it's a bad place but liberating. You're an adult now, it benefits you to just blend in as a normal girl for a while, and you're enjoying it. Not avoiding duty, she snaps to it the second it's time, but your time in the slums feels more like a bright spot.
It's a cool contrast. Kenshin lost himself in the slums, Kiku found herself in the same environment. A flower thriving in the desolation.

About a Manwha I read titled "Kill me Now"
BEWARE OF ANGST: THIS MANWHA HAS A PROBLEMATIC RELATIONSHIP, LOTS OF VIOLENCE, ABUSE, CRIME, AND SHITLOADS OF TRAUMA. READ IT AND THIS BLOG AT YOUR OWN RISK
Tumblr media
So, I was reading this manhwa called "Kill me Now" after discovering it last year. I wanted some nice smut and angst mixed with some gangsta bullshit so, I ended up invested in it 😂.
But what caught my eye the most was the relationship between the two female leads and the main couple Haegu and Mian. It reminded me of one of my favorite animes, Rurouni Kenshin.
Spoilers, ho!
Haegu (black hair), like Kenshin, is a skilled and ruthless killer who had to become cruel at a young age, 15 years old, to be exact. They end up becoming more human after loving a person whose loved one they killed, with Haegu growing to care for Mian when she killed the latter's father and Kenshin falling in love with Tomoe when he killed Tomoe's husband, Akira.
Mian (blonde hair), like Tomoe, falls in love with Haegu, like Tomoe falls for Kenshin. Despite Haegu and Kenshin killing their respective loved ones, with Haegu killing Mian's father and Kenshin killing Akira, Mian and Tomoe still fall for them. Mian and Tomoe also grapple with the guilt in their hearts for falling in love with the person who killed those they care for.
All in all, it's a cool manhwa. It's coming to a close now and I want to see a fitting endgame for Haegu and Mian. At best, I hope they at least find a way to care for each other in a healthy way. At worst, I feel their relationship will end tragically. I actually personally feel it's going to end tragically because I heard somewhere that cosmos, the creator, said it will end like a Greek tragedy or something. I dunno, but the buildup and vibe gives me that.

I feel like there’s a palpable tension here when Twilight in disguise as Minister Brantz seeing Yuri Briar doing his job as Secret State Police not so much because Twilight works for WISE and Yuri works for his mortal enemy but because Yuri loves his sister Yor so much and Twilight is falling in love with her so much whether or not he wants to or not. And as much as Twilight lacks the self-awareness, I think he does know on the surface level that he did just barge into Yor and Yuri’s family without permission. I feel like because Twilight didn’t even consult Yuri about courting his sister, Yuri is always going to be a threat to his potential genuine relationship with Yor, not as a member of Secret State Service but as her brother. It’s something he can’t really blame Yuri for because Yuri and Yor had to look after each other after their parents died, and that’s something he’s always going to be jealous of.
Like Twilight cherishes someone that he unknowingly took from Yuri who Yuri also cherishes so much as well. He knows he can’t appease that anger. He took a big piece of pie without permission and he doesn’t want to give it back.
What’s worse is that Twilight believes that Yor’s support for him is only conditional to their fake family agreement.

Temos também a volta de Shy, que pretendemos trazer agora semanalmente, e Episode Nagi, que dá um trabalho do cacete, mas vamos estar nos empenhando pra colocar em dia o quanto antes.

Honestly? I am quite conflicted.
Spoilers for One Piece in general.
First of all this is my own opinion, if you disagree with me is ok and I don't intent to make your opinion less valid than mine; I am just working my own thoughts.
For me is a solid 7/10; which is way more than what I was expecting to be honest. The show is not perfect by all means but it really shows how much the cast and everyone involves loves the source material and tried their best to create something unique that still respects the source material.
No, it didn't break the curse of live actions neither is the best live action of an anime ever created. That title is still held by the Rurouni Kenshin movies that I hope people ignore rightfully because of the awful crimes of the mangaka and not because of ignorance; but still, the live action is a good example that shows is possible to make something good of an anime even the anime is wanky.
When it lands? the live action is pretty good; but what I failed to understand how to explain, because is not miss or fail but changed in a way I am not sure it works properly really affects the narrative.
Those changes really affected the layers of stories and characterization Oda should be praised for.
I am almost convinced Jacob is the best actor to play Usopp, but they butchered my boy so much I don't even know how to feel about him. He was so out of what Usopp is that like someone mentioned in another post, if you deleted Usopp from the Syrup village episodes nothing really changed.
His decision of leaving is something super important for his growth and at the end Luffy and Zoro inviting him shows the connection they got.
In here, he was almost forced to live, keeping his interest just to stay with Kaya.
Same goes with Nojiko and Genzo not knowing Nami's plan. Even so, they basically destroyed the meaning of Genzo in Nami's life.
Some changes doesn't make sense if you think to much about the manga or anime but it fits in the world, like Garp been in Roger's execution, been interest of catching Luffy(when he showed up on post enies lobby just because Coby and Helmeppo wanted to see Luffy) and his blatant obsession over the world government.
None of that really fits Garp at all, and I was honestly doubting this decision(even more when we focus so much in the marines this early on the story) until we learned at the end that he just don't want Luffy to end like Roger.
Is a way to pay homage to Garp's respect to Roger even if they were enemies. At the end I was like oh okay this kinda works, but during the majority of the episodes I was super lost with this.
There's another thing that I am completely aware is just my own opinion is that something I really appreciate Oda for doing that we don't see that much in other shonen stories is that Oda takes the time to show the people from the locations the arcs happened being involved in some way.
Genzo and Nojiko risking their lives to keep Luffy safe until he gets free. The Usopp pirates risking their lives even if they are just kids, freaking Chu Chu and the major of that village willing to risk their lives even if they are not strong.
This is amazing because is not just our group of heroes solving everyone's else problems, but it shows that even doing the minimum helps and their effort is important to it(is not until Desrossa that we have a person like this have a major fight but still the meaning matters).
I don't know, things like Nami's emotions when she breaks was perfect and kudos to Emily Rudd for an amazing performance, but in my opinion Nami wasn't part of the Arlong Park walk because she was gonna be part of the enies lobby walk. It shows her character growth to be the one that was helped to be the one that is gonna help at the end. So changing that was gonna have to be a significant part of her character that needs to work very well, and the live action did it for her just walk around, stand to Arlong and run away. I feel it was missing something.
But like I was said, Nami's breakdown was down perfect and I really love little moments like the barrel sequence when they show them as kids too.
Either way, I hope they get a second season.
