Additional information ––– – Smoking Habit: Occasionally Drugs: Not often Alcohol: Socially
RP Hooks ––– – A Mother's Guidance Alfred, though young still, is an accomplished swordsman.  Having trained for many years under the tutelage of his mother Wilmina, the art of fencing is not entirely based on luck.  A warrior's blood runs thick in his veins as he still goes through the drills every morning along with the routines from his youth.  After his mother's accident and upon the brother's leave-taking she bequeathed her own blade to him.  The rapier is from her own domain of Richemulot and was used during days as a 'ratcatcher'.  Basic in most parts with a swept hilt, the true power comes from the inlaid of silver along the fuller.  A beautiful and ancient weapon, it's Alfred's pride and responsibility to bring the same honor she carried with it.
A Father's Gift The ability to wander the Mists is a special gift and skill, that Gregor Klaudin felt was all the more necessary to share with his sons.  Janus took to it like a fish to water, but Alfred seemed to struggle as he tried his best to guide his steps through their treacherous means.  With enough concentration, the ways become more clearer but nothing like his kin who seem to see the clinging fog as a dangerous friend.  For Alfred, the Mists that cloud the domains are always a danger.  Time and patience as his grandfather would say, are what he needs.
A Family Business For what Alfred may lack in the power of the mysticism, he has never shied away from learning all he can about the darkness that creeps the edge of the peripheral.  Books line the wagon he shares with is brother, some mere fairy tales or mythology while others darker and bearing marks to be only uttered in bright of day.  His 'uncle' may have begun the spark of the need to hunt those that would prey on the innocent but it was his mother's tale that helped seal what he had to do.  Her sword was not meant to be shaken at brigands and drunks, it was meant to deal with those dark powers.  Combined with Wilmina's training and Eld's knowledge, Alfred has gained enough skill and wisdom to be a powerful force in dealing with those that would go bump in the night.
A Brothers Journey The Brothers Klaudin have recently broken off from their family and struck off on their own into the domains of the universe.  Their wagon loaded with the strange and exotic of other worlds, the pair have hit the misty trails in search of fortune and glory.  As much Alfred would like to rely on the trade aspect of their journey, he can't help but note how much influence and income they gather thanks to Janus's own skills.  But for all the song and dance might line their pockets, there were always jealous boyfriends or angry fathers or just a drunk who thinks he can get away with being rude.  Thus where the muscle that is Alfred earns his keep in protecting his brother and their assets.

OoC tumblr (https://acrowamongsparrows.tumblr.com/) Discord ( Mogwai Kraken#7988)
IC It was only a few from the wagon seat to the ground, but the splash that rose from the mud and water was enough to coat up to to his knees.  Alfred didn't mind though.
"You got this?" Janus asked calmly from the other seat, his hand already beginning to edge for the crossbow beneath the seat.
The mustachioed swordsman would only grunt as he let the rain water from above spill about the wide brim of his hat.  His left hand reaching up to smooth his mustache as he moved forward with quick steps down the road.  The four men ahead did not move.
"That's far enough," said one of the middle men.  Alfred stopped.  "Good boy."
The four men were dressed for the rain, much like Alfred with heavy cloaks and hoods compared to his own cape and hat.  The glint of the steel in hand was an advantage they thought they had.  Three swords and a crossbow.  It wasn't great odds.
One of the middle man stepped ahead of his three compatriots, the far left keeping his crossbow trained beyond him on Janus at the wagon.  "Yer money or your life."
A frown was hidden behind the thick mustache as he tilted his head at the gauche phrase.  A gentle turn of his cloak would reveal Alfred's one hand resting on the pommel of his sword.  Being a man of few words, the duelist would gently respond in kind.  "No."
"No?  Well I'll give it to ya, mate," the middle one laughed as his friends snickered as well.  "Ya got ba-"
The middle man never got a chance to finish his snide remark as thick knife lay buried deep at the base of his throat. Shock and alarm was etched on his face as his own fingers wet nerveless and he dropped his sword into the mud.  His eyes stared at the blade in his chest before had time to look up as the the shining point brought darkness quickly to his left eye.
Alfred grabbed hold of the man's cloak as he easily yanked his rapier from the man's skull and heard the cries of anger from the bandits.  No discipline or skill for sure as he felt a thunk of the crossbow bolt in the body he held.  He needed to move faster.
Teeth gritted he would lift the body and carry it as a shield from any other shots before throwing it with a yell at the bow.  There was little time as the body landed somewhere near the shooter before the other two men rushed Alfred.
Two on one was never easy but hardly impossible.  Just needed to separate them as Alfred turned his body sideways to engage the faster of the men.  The short sword was slashed wide and wild, angry at the death of their 'face' as Alfred bounced back before bearing the riposte.  The sword point easily delved through the old cloak and cloth to find flesh.  A gurgled cry and slump as the bandit fell over clutching his chest where the sword had likely pierced a lung.  Disappoint ached in Alfred as he should have been a little more to the left on his thrust.
No time to lament his lack of aim as the third bandit reached him, this one a bit wiser as he thrust with his own sword.  A strong parry followed by a riposte was Alfred's easiest response as the steel clacked.  The bandit was quick to as he back up, using his own thicker blade to batter the thin rapier away.  There was a tack of resistance, but Alfred was far better trained and at home with this deadly work.
A quick series of back and forth with steel was unworthy of noting before Alfred ducked down for a quick thrust at his opponent's knee.  The sharp point once again did it's duty as it slipped through the cap causing the would be robber to pitch forward with a scream.  His blade dropping to the mud while he grabbed his bleeding leg, the bandit had little time to worry over it before a slash of the rapier took his eyes.  The screaming continued as he fell back clutching at his face beckoning death to come hither.
A bounce forward ended the screams with another thrust to the chest of the dying man.  Alfred turned to his final assailant.
Fortunatly he already lay still on the ground, a large bolt protruding from his chest as his legs quivered in the mud. Snorting Alfred turned back to the cart, finding the seat empty by Janus only a few feet away with the unloaded weapon in hand. "I told you to stay at the wagon."
Janus shrugged softly before resting the crossbow on a shoulder.  "Maybe, but four on one is not great odds for you brother."
Snorting Alfred would wiped his sword clean on the dead man's cloak and sheathed it with practiced ease.  "Well you are here, let us move them off the road.  I'll check these two, check the others."
"All in a days work," Janus would smile as he stalked over to the two Alfred had taken just before.  Alfred did not smile as he fetched his knife from the 'face'.

A Jace Herondale short story
The rain was softly hitting the window of the busstop as the black sky finaly breaks lose. Jace takes a step back to avoid the rain the wind blows into the busshelter. If there is something Jace hates more than rain, it’s waiting. “If Alec would just hurry up.” Jace mumbles irritated. Bus 213 towards city centre stops in front of him. The doors open, but Jace doesn’t seem to want to get in. The bus driver backs up the bus a bit so he can look at Jace. “What are you waiting for?” The man asks to Jace´s annoyance. He should have made himself invisible to the mundane. He was going to but he forgot in his hurry. “Get in!” “No, thanks.” Jace tells him nonchalantly. “This is the last bus of tonight, young man. Are you sure you want to be out here in this wheater?” The man points up at the sky as if Jace couldn’t grasp that he was talking about the threathening clouds above them. “Do you watch the news?” The man asks to Jace’s surprise. “A boy from your age found dead not more than 500 meters from here. Not a single drop of blood left in his body. And his heart. His heart was ripped out.”
"I don't see anyting," says Jace. A blonde strand of his thick hair falls before his eyes, but he is too focused to wipe it away. "If you hadn't be flirting with that girl, we wouldn't have lost him!" Alec says obviously irritated. With his trusted bow and quiver with arrows on his back, he follows Jace further into the dark alley. "I wasn't flirting." Jace´s sword gives a soft glow in the darkness. "My invisibility rune was activated, but still she could see me." Alec frowns, but doesn't say anything. "Yes, exactly!" Jace exclaims without turning around he knew what his brothers reaction had been."Still," say Alec, "We're on a mission, so focus on it!" Of course, Alec had to be the serious leader. Everthing according to protocol. At the end of the alley is a light. The light clearly illuminates a shadow. "Izzy!" Jace and Alec run towards their sister to see why she is on her knees. "He's dead." Isabelle's voice is soft. Jace can now see she is kneeling next to a boy of their age. A werewolf. "Looks like the vamps and the wolfs are at war once again," says Alec. "We have to get his body out of here." "I'm not touching him. Just wait until the conclave has handeled this." Jace crosses his arms across his chest. "That is protocol, right?" Before Alec can argue, they hear sirens. The policecar stops right in front of the far side of the alley. Thanks to their runes the cops can't see them. "Shit," Jace curses. This was not good at all.
Jace looks at the busdriver with a certain coldness in his eyes that would even scare Dwanye Johnson. "Oh, I know." The man's face drains from all blood and turns an ashy white. Fast he closes the doors and drives away. Jace laughs. The mundane are so easy to scare.

Baylor Johnson returns for the (mercifully) final chapter of the Billy Owens saga. Marvel as Billy stoically mumbles confusing dialogue, thrill at the other kids doing the exact same thing, and grow annoyed as all of the adults also do that. Rowdy Roddy Piper tries his hardest and tries our patience in 2010’s Billy Owens and the Secret of the Runes!   YOUR HOSTS   Wright Sulek (Screener Squad, Digital Noise, Highly… Read More »Trash in the Can: Billy Owens and the Secret of the Runes read more on One of Us

THE LOST CITY (2022)
Starring Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Brad Pitt, Patti Harrison, Oscar Nuñez, Raymond Lee, Adam Nee, Bowen Yang, Joan Pringle, Thomas Forbes-Johnson, Héctor Aníbal, Katherine Montes,     Danny Radhames Vasquez Castillo and Marcos Sánchez.
Screenplay by Oren Uziel and Dana Fox and Adam Nee & Aaron Nee.
Directed by Adam Nee & Aaron Nee.
Distributed by Paramount Pictures. 112 minutes. Rated PG-13.
There is no real point in trying to review The Lost City.
The Lost City is kind of cheesy, very silly, and at the same time it is often a lot of fun. And you know what? That’s okay. Not everything has to be a masterpiece. There is a place in the world for light, frivolous entertainment, and that for sure is exactly what this film is.
The Lost City is romantic comedy and a parody of romance novels and adventure films. It features two old pros in the leads that could play these roles in their sleep. It also features a good-natured cameo by an A-list star. There is some stunning scenery, flashy wardrobe choices, a lot of gratuitous explosions and a will-they-or-won’t they relationship.
If you’ve seen a single romantic comedy, you know where all of this is going, but that doesn’t mean that it is not worth the trip.
The film stars Sandra Bullock – in her uptight mode – as Loretta, a popular romance novelist whose heart has been broken by the death of her ex-husband a few years earlier. She had a terrible time writing her latest book because of this – in fact, she basically gave up on it without a real ending – and she is resisting her agent’s attempt to bring her on a book tour.
Also appearing on the tour is Alan, the model who has adorned all of her book covers – a slightly dumb himbo in a Fabio wig who has a bit of a crush on her. Channing Tatum has been playing this type of role – the handsome-but-dumb dude with a good heart – pretty often in the last decade or so, and in fairness to him, he is good at putting a little flesh on the stereotype.
As I said, there is nothing really new here, but Bullock and particularly Tatum throws themselves so gamely into the characters, and they are so effortlessly charming, that you can’t help but fall under the film’s spell.
The Lost City is loosely reminiscent of the 1980s adventure comedy Romancing the Stone with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. It throws a woman who has becomes spoiled with her leisurely life into an adventure she is not ready for – and has no real reason to really be there – and through the experience she regains her mojo.
Brad Pitt shows up for a bit in a good-natured parody of himself. Daniel Radcliffe continues flexing his comic muscles as the evil millionaire who kidnaps the author in the vain assumption that because she writes about finding lost treasures that she can actually track them down for real.
Also fun are Da'Vine Joy Randolph (from Only Murders in the Building) as the brassy agent and Patti Harrison as a completely tone-deaf social media specialist.
Large swaths of the story and characterization don’t exactly make sense. Alan goes from dumb to kinda smart way too quickly, as does Loretta go from icy to rather warm. It’s a huge stretch that she could be the only person in the world who can decipher some ancient runes. And how exactly does her agent just run across them in some strange river in the middle of a rain forest?
However, you’re not watching The Lost City for logic or sense. You’re watching for fun, some laughs and a little bit of romance. Mission accomplished.

Use the ones you like, and ignore the ones you don’t or don’t do it for ya. Thank you!
KEEP THE SUGGESTIONS COMING SO I CAN ADD THEM AND IT GROWS IN SIZE!

The Altar :
Tumblr media
Merry Meet, my Witches. 💙
To me, one of the most crucial things a practicing witch should have is an altar or a sacred space. It’s a safe space that you have set aside specifically for your practice & your craft. It’s a place where you feel most in-tune with yourself & your magic. This could be the top of your dresser, a few shelves on the bookcase, or even the dining room hutch; the possibilities are seriously endless.
As I’ve said a few times before, there is no right or a wrong way to do this. Setting up this space for yourself should be a reflection of you & what you feel. Your space can be as elaborate, or as simple as you want it to be.
Now, with that being said, below is a list of things that you might want to include in your own space!
Altar Cloth :
Black or Purple are the typical colors used, but choose a cloth that resonates with you!
A Window :
While this is not at all necessary, setting up your space near a window allows you to more easily connect with the elements! Opening up the window to allow a cool breeze to flow through you space could do wonders.
Candles :
Because no space is complete without them! Use them for spell work, or during a ritual, or you can simply burn them to enhance the ambiance of your space.
Cleansing Tool :
This could be a sage bundle, palo santo, or incense. Hell, use all three! Use these as a way to help cleanse your space of any negative energy.
Crystals:
The options will be never-ending! But choosing crystals such as Amethyst & Clear Quartz to assist in raising the vibration of your space & bringing in those good energies can elevate your practice!
Divination Tool :
Tarot or Oracle decks are usually the popular choice, but you could use a pendulum or runes as well
Elemental Representations :
Air (East) - Bell, Feather, Butterflies, Incense, Sage, Windchimes
Earth (North) - Crystals, Salt, Herbs/Flowers, Dirt, or even Wood
Water (West) - Seashells, Chalice, Water Bowl
Fire (South) - Candle, Athame, Sun
Essential Oils :
Oils have a ton of magical uses as well as practical uses! Anoint your candles, assist in your meditation, even use them to massage your body.
Herbs :
Just like essential oils, plants & herbs can be used in so many ways! You could burn them, or infuse them into your tea, or you could even decorate your space with dried or fresh flowers you are drawn to.
God/Goddess :
Working or worshiping with the divine is not required for your practice! However, should you choose to incorporate this, you can use printed photos, statutes, oracle cards, or any other creative representation of them. An offering bowl is also a recommended item to place near their representations.
Remember, this space is sacred to you, and you alone! If you have special possessions that hold a specific meaning to you, place it on your altar! Photographs, trinkets, mementos... use it! It may not make sense to others as to why it’s there, but these items aren’t there for anyone else.
Create your magic.
Blessed Be. 🌙

Book Review #3 | Ghosts of the Shadow Market (part 1)
 By C. Clare, M. Johnson, K. Link, S. Brennan, and R. Wasserman
[Beware! This review contains spoilers, so read at your own peril.]
Tumblr media
“The Shadow Market is a meeting point for faeries, werewolves, warlocks and vampires. There the Downworlders buy and sell magical objects, make dark bargains, and whisper secrets they do not want the Nephilim to know. Through two centuries, however, there has been a frequent visitor to the Shadow Market from the City of Bones, the very heart of the Shadowhunters. As a Silent Brother, Brother Zachariah is sworn keeper of the laws and lore of the Nephilim. But once he was a Shadowhunter called Jem Carstairs, and his love, then and always, is the warlock Tessa Gray. Follow Brother Zachariah and see, against the backdrop of the Shadow Market’s dark dealings and festive celebrations, Anna Lightwood’s first romance, Matthew Fairchild’s great sin and Tessa Gray plunged into a world war. Valentine Morgenstern buys a soul at the Market and a young Jace Wayland’s soul finds safe harbor. In the Market is hidden a lost heir and a beloved ghost, and no one can save you once you have traded away your heart. Not even Brother Zachariah.”
[Official synopsis of the book.]
After something like three hundred and eighty-four years, we finally get the Jem Carstairs content we desperately needed since the end of TID. Because a life without Brother Snack-ariah is no life at all, am I right?
Tumblr media
The book consists of ten short stories and follows the adventures of Brother Zackariah, our beloved Jem, searching through the shadow market in order to find some information about the Lost Herondale.
Set in 1901, the first two stories (“Cast Long Shadows”, and “Every Exquisite Thing”) are an introduction of the upcoming The Last Hours trilogy, whose first book (Chain of Gold) is coming out on March 2020.
Just eight more months until its release. We can do it, guys. It’s not like we are doing our waiting… Twelve years of it… In Azkaban. By comparison, March 2020… that’s like tomorrow.
Anyway, the co-protagonist of Cast Long Shadows is Matthew Fairchild, Charlotte and Henry’s second born. Matthew’s interests include his parabatai James, fashion, Oscar Wilde quotes, and being adorable 24/7.
The faerie woman looked almost sad. “You come of a brutal people, sweet child.”
“Not me,” said Matthew. “I believe in art and beauty.”
“You might be pitiless one day, for all that.”
“No, never” Matthew insisted. “I don’t care for the Shadowhunter customs at all. I like Downworlder ways much more.”
It’s been a few years since our Scooby gang was expelled from the Shadowhunters Academy, and now Matthew and James are parabatai. I’ve always loved their relationship, especially at the beginning when they were still rivals, and I can’t wait to read more about them.
“Bless you, my Herondales,” said Matthew grandly, scrambling up from the floor and making Lucie his bow. “I come upon an urgent errand. Tell me – be honest! – what do you think of my waistcoat?”
Lucie dimpled. “Devastating.”
“What Lucie said,” James agreed peacefully.
“Not fantastic?” Matthew asked. “Not positively stunning?”
“I suppose I am stunned,” said James. “But am I positively stunned?”
The Last Hours is going to shatter our hearts. I already know it. You already know it. Everybody already knows it. Which is why I keep asking myself, why am I still reading Cassandra’s books even though each time they seem to inexorably destroy what is left of my soul? Give me a call when you find out the answer.
Tumblr media
All right, I never thought The Last Hours was going to be sugar, spice and everything nice, but this is way too much. How am I supposed to live knowing that Matthew is hurting and that there is nothing I can do about it?
I hated reading this novel. I really did hate it. Because Matthew is young and naïve and innocent and so unselfish and sensitive, and yet he was exploited and manipulated by a psycho Downworlder who wanted to hurt the Shadowhunters. His only fault was giving too much credit to the insecurity that he always tried to hide behind an overconfident façade, and this endangered his mother and killed his unborn sister.
Instead of telling the truth, he decides to keep it a secret from everyone, even from his parabatai, since he feels so ashamed of himself and thinks that there cannot be forgiveness for what he has done. So from now on, something in Matthew changes, and he will never be the same.
In the second novella, Every Exquisite Thing, the co-protagonist is Anna, Cecily and Gabriel Lightwoorm’s eldest daughter. Chapeau to the artist for making such a beautiful drawing of her! She’s perfect... and she also looks like Ruby Rose, doesn’t she?
We stan a queen.
Tumblr media
Beside stealing her brother’s clothes, she enjoys getting weird (see: voluptuous) glances from other women while walking down the streets. I mean, even Brother Six-pack-ariah states that she looks a lot like her uncle Will, which is something that could give her the power to turn freaking rocks on.
Although Anna was definitely born in the wrong period, she’s still lucky enough to have a supportive family that loves her no matter what.
Anna thought of all the pain of the day again – the wound that had ripped her chest open and exposed her heart. But now it was as if her mother had drawn a rune over it and closed it. The scar was there, but she was whole.
It was like being Marked all over again, defining who she was. This was Anna Lightwood.
When I read this novella for the first time, I was on a plane, so I was like Elsa from Frozen. Conceal, don’t feeeel, don’t let them knowwwwww.
Little did I know that something even more heart-breaking was coming... and it answers to the name of Learn about Loss. Which was the moment when the Elsa in me was like well, now they knooowwwwww.
Let it gooooo, let it goooooo.
Can’t hold it back anymooooooreeeee.
Tumblr media
In Learn about loss, we follow Brother Mlml-ariah back to the United States, where he and Sister Emilia (a James Carstairs stan) are investigating some weird activities regarding adamas. They end up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where a Mysterious Merchants’ Bazar is promising the inhabitants of the city whatever they most desire.
We all know that in the shadow world there is no such thing as coincidences, so the one who is stealing the adamas is the one behind this market... and he is also of the Greater Demons, Belial, who happens to know something important about the Lost Herondale.
“I might know a cure,” Belial said. “Yes, I think I know a sure cure. You could be who you once were. You could be Jem again. Or.”
Brother Zachariah said, Or?
Belial’s long tongue flickered out, as if he was tasting the air and found it delicious. “Or I could tell you a thing you don’t know. There are Herondales, not the ones you know, but of the same blood as your parabatai.”
It could be a great dilemma. Getting rid of a curse that ended your life and becoming a Shadowhunters again – or remaining a Silent Brother just to help out the two people you love the most? But what could be a great dilemma to most... means nothing to Brother Zachariah, who, even as a Silent Brother, is devoted to his loved ones more than ever.
The Carstairs owe a life debt to the Herondales.
which is a deeper and stronger way to say «I love you».
At the end of the novella, Sister Emilia makes a deal with Belial, who promises her to give Brother Zachariah some extra time with his dying parabatai in form of a vision.
In the vision, Will and Jem are young again, and it’s the period before their parabatai ceremony. They find themselves in Shangai, which is the place where Jem was born... a place they never got to visit. For once in a long time, even though for a short moment, Jem is himself again and gets to be with his other half before Will passes away.
I love the way Cassandra Clare describes the bond between parabatai. It is so intimate yet it makes you feel part of something bigger just by reading about it.
There was a lightness in Jem’s chest that he realized, finally, was joy. He saw that joy mirrored in his parabatai’s face. The face of the one you love is the best mirror of all. It shows you your own happines and your own pain and it helps you bear both, because to bear alone is to be overwhelmed by the flood.
We had been waiting for this moment since The infernal devices... and it’s more than perfect.
I think I speak for everyone when I say that we could never thank Cassandra enough for this reunion. Unless she decided to write a new series about them...
Anyway, this is where the first part of my review ends. I hope you guys enjoyed it; in this case, let me know! On the contrary, let me know too!
Ave atque vale,
my brothers and sisters

Pretender Reads A Little Hatred, Part I, Chapter One
It's time. Goes without saying spoilers ahead for the entirety of The First Law works beyond the keep reading. Read at your own risk.
PART I
"The age is running mad after innovation;
and all the business of the world
is to be done in a new way.”
—Dr Johnson
No joke? This quotes gave me chills as a declaration of authorial intent. I have a slightly more optimistic view of The First Law’s world, but even I knew the first trilogy’s intent was, beyond commenting on how much Abercrombie dug Lord of the Rings so much that he wrote a trilogy to show his... appreciation, to show that, as much as people want to change, they are helpless to actually commit by their pasts, being pieces and pawns to the old ways and grudges of Bayaz and Khalul’s “great” war of two old assholes fighting over grudges kept alive solely two great powers butting heads over wrongs long past.
That human nature is fundamentally unchanging.
But, at the same time? Abercrombie’s throwing down a gauntlet with this quote. With the new flavor of fantasy he’s promising, the new generation of characters he has to usher in to spearhead that new age, he has to change. He cannot rehash the old stories. Cannot repeat the old patterns. Cannot force the old systems continuing to work, having grown rusty and creaky with age. History has to move forward. Meaning he has to pave the path to new ways. The question is, new way in what manner? New ways as in a social progress, positive change, a better world? Or new ways as in Bayaz changing from magic to money, and from spells to cannons, in order to assert the same small-minded ideal of might makes right with different tools?
It’s a new age of madness, but with human nature being what it is? Abercrombie has shown that a little hatred goes a long way to lead us to stepping upon old roads left behind our parents, who they themselves trod on by their predecessors.
Chapter Title: Blessings and Curses Point-of-View: Rikke
“Rikke.”
She prised one eye open. A slit of stabbing, sickening brightness.
“Come back.”
She pushed the spit-wet dowel out of her mouth with her tongue and croaked the one word she could think of. “Fuck.”
Now isn’t that just a typical Abercrombie sentiment. Actually, what I want to focus on is how this opening is lean compared to The Blade Itself:
Logen plunged through the trees, bare feet slipping and sliding on the wet earth, the slush, the wet pine needles, breath rasping in his chest, blood thumping in his head. He stumbled and sprawled onto his side, nearly cut his chest open with his own axe, lay there panting, peering through the shadowy forest.
—The Blade Itself, The End
From Blessings and Curses, we already see a much apparent crispness of voice, short paragraphs broken apart, an unusual situation of a girl opening one eye and having to come back (come back from what?) There’s a surreal quality that Logen’s opening, as much as I like it as an introduction to The Blade Itself, can’t beat beyond the chapter title. Yet, to remind us it’s Abercrombie, someone has to say fuck. Because of course.
“There’s my girl!” Isern squatted beside her, necklace of runes and finger bones dangling, grinning that twisted grin that showed the hole in her teeth and offering no help at all.
HOLY FUCK IT’S CRUMMOCK’S SHIN-KICKER AAAAAAAAAAAH!!!
“I saw folk falling from a high tower. Dozens of ’em.” She winced at the thought of them hitting the ground. “I saw folk hanged. Rows of ’em.” Her gut cramped at the memory of swinging bodies, dangling feet. “I saw … a battle, maybe? Below a red hill.”
Isern sniffed. “This is the North. Takes no magic to see a battle coming. What else?”
“I saw Uffrith burning.” Rikke could almost smell the smoke still. She pressed her hand to her left eye. Felt hot. Burning hot.
“What else?”
“I saw a wolf eat the sun. Then a lion ate the wolf. Then a lamb ate the lion. Then an owl ate the lamb.”
“Must’ve been a real monster of an owl.”
“Or a tiny little lamb, I guess? What does it mean?”
So, full disclosure here: I did read the A Little Hatred blurb before reading, so I already knew we were getting something like this... but holy shit, we’re seriously getting a prophet? I’m going to talk my precise thoughts on this later, in full first impressions of Rikke as a character, but man, I usually hate prophecies and prophets, but with Abercrombie? Dude’s earned enough credit (specifically, everything to do with Grom-gil-Gorm’s prophecy in the Shattered Sea series) at my trust bank to get me to care. And I love how Rikke can still feel the sensory details of her visions, the costs of magic. Magic.
Also, am I a terrible person for, seeing the eats in the prophecy, immediately thinking Eaters? I probably am.
I’ll hold off on dissecting the prophecy at the chapter’s end.
"Well, I can unveil two secrets right away.” Rikke groaned as she pushed herself up onto one elbow. “My head hurts and I shat myself.”
"That second one’s no secret, anyone with a nose is party to it.”
"Shitty Rikke, they’ll call me." She wrinkled her nose as she shifted. “And not for the first time.”
"Your problem is in caring what they call you.”
There’s definitely a very winning formula with how Rikke and Isern’s dynamic works: the young, soft-hearted naif butting and bouncing heads against the more world-weary, a touch twisted, experienced warrior. Rikke complains about how much the world will react to her, Isern tells her to suck it up because Rikke doesn’t have to care at all.
Also, not going to lie: part of why I love Rikke is that she shits herself during her visions and fits. It undercuts the mystique of magic with the unpleasant consequences, grounded in reality.
Isern tapped under her left eye. “You say cursed with fits, I say blessed with the Long Eye.”
So. First off, fun fact:
Crummock spun one of the wooden signs on his necklace round and around. “I can’t see her letting Bethod lose, and herself along with him, can you? A witch as clever as that one? There’s all kinds of magic she could mix. All kinds of blessings and curses. All kinds of ways that bitch could tilt the outcome, as though the chances weren’t tilted enough already.”
—Last Argument of Kings, Leaves on the Water
History echoes, doesn’t it? Another i-Phail, another user of the Long Eye, and a discussion about the blessings and curses of magic. The players are different, but the sentiments are similar enough to ripple from the past to the present.
Now, my first reaction to reading this part of the blurb was: WHOA WHOA WHOA, Caurib’s Long Eye from The First Law trilogy? OH MY GOD!!!!! Just more connective tissue to link this book from its past, the earliest roots of Abercrombie’s world-building, when he was still tinkering with what he wanted (long eye isn’t even capitalized in The First Law’s mention of it). It’s a nice reference for us long-time readers and a magical power for the new readers.
Mind you, all I’m thinking is: was Caurib, every time she was decked out and being impossibly beautiful in the way Abercrombie wrote her... was she actually having fits and headaches and shitting for her visions? Because, wow, I can only imagine how frustrated she must’ve been having to make public appearances. I can just imagine her wishing everyone would fuck off so she could have headaches and shit in peace. Already makes me like Caurib a lot more now.
“Huh.” Rikke rolled onto her knees and her stomach kept on rolling and tickled her throat with sick. By the dead, she felt sore and squeezed out. Twice the pain of a night at the ale cup and none of the sweet memories. “Doesn’t feel like much of a blessing to me,” she muttered, once she’d risked a little burp and fought her guts to a draw.
I really do appreciate how much Abercrombie grounds and mixes a curse into magical “blessings.” I was really skeptical of putting in some last trace of magic in anyone, but Rikke’s right in it not being a blessing, and considering magic is on its last legs, there’s no way Bayaz won’t meet her later and clutch his monstrous hands on her Long Eye, teaching her finesse in exchange for getting to aim where it goes towards.
Another tool. Another weapon to kill his enemies.
"Might have to rope you in future, make sure you don’t crack your nut and end up a drooler like my brother Brait. At least he can keep his shit in, mind you.”
HOW MANY SONS DID CRUMMOCK HAVE. THE FUCK!? I can’t even find a Brait anywhere except The Heroes and that was clearly not him. For one, he didn’t drool!
“My head still aches so bad I can feel it in my teeth.” Rikke wanted to shout but knew it’d hurt too much, so she had to whine it soft instead. “I need no more small discomforts.”
“Life is small discomforts, girl! They’re how you know you are alive.”
Another part of why I like Rikke so much is that, as a character starting out, she whines. A decent amount. She’s admittedly got some good reason to do so, but as the narrative points out and Isern especially, at least living means you get to whine about it and too much of it will only enable more discomfort, make the pain bigger. There’s intentional room to grow for Rikke and the fact that Abercrombie lets her be a bit of a whiner at the risk of alienating readers is a writer’s courage I always try to emulate.
Character development’s has to start somewhere.
“Guess not. Just, in the songs, it’s a thing witches and magi and deep-wise folk used to see into the fog of what comes. Not a thing that makes idiots fall down and shit themselves.”
“In case you never noticed, bards have a habit of dressing things up. There is a fine living, d’you see, in songs about deep-wise witches, but in shitty idiots, less.”
Snrrrrrk. I got to love how Abercrombie shades lesser and classic fantasies. He does so well with it.
“And proving you have the Long Eye is no simple matter. You cannot force it open. You must coax it.” And Isern tickled Rikke under the chin and made her jerk away. “Take it up to the sacred places where the old stones stand so the moon might shine full upon it. But it’ll see what it sees when it chooses, even so.”
Huh. Crummock made it clear that there was something special about the moon during his time in Last Argument of Kings. I assumed it was solely just him thinking the moon’s love made men more violent and strong, but did he think it could influence magic? Given his more singular focus on violence and his clear Bloody-Nine murderboner fanboying, I think Crummock was a lot more close-minded about how the moon can affect things. Isern’s a lot more flexible, by comparison.
(Also, are those sacred places that fortress Logen and Crummock and the rest had their last stand in the High Places? Crummock did say it was well loved of the moon...)
“War?”
“It’s when a fight gets so big almost no one comes out of it well.”
“I know what it bloody is.” Rikke had a spot of fear growing at the nape of her neck which she couldn’t shrug off however much she wriggled her shoulders. “But there’s been peace in the North all my lifetime.”
“My da used to say times of peace are when the wise prepare for violence.”
“Your da was mad as a bootful of dung.”
“And what does your da say? Few men so sane as the Dogman.”
Rikke wriggled her shoulders one more time, but nothing helped. “He says hope for the best and prepare for the worst.”
Isern’s first line is true, but also makes me think of all the Northmen who came into war, looking for glory and a Name, and came out dead or unable to stop killing, their bloody footsteps followed by fellow warriors with same dreams of glory and a Name, just younger. War chews up men and spits them out, dead or alive, no one living coming out without trauma and/or a score of dead friends.
Also, Dogman’s daughter, huh! Good on him for managing to raise a decent child in the Circle of the World, even if she has her share of flaws. Rikke certainly reminds me of a softer, more whinier Dogman, yet still decent.
Rikke blinked at her. ‘You can’t have been ten years old.’
‘Old enough to kill a man.’
‘What?’
‘Used to carry my da’s hammer, ’cause the smallest should take the heaviest load, but that day he was fighting with the hammer so I had his spear. This very one.’ Its butt tapped the rhythm of their walking on the path. ‘My da knocked a man down, and he was trying to get up, and I stabbed him right up the arse.’
‘With that spear?’ Rikke had come to think of it as just a stick Isern carried. A stick that happened to have a deerskin cover over one end. She didn’t like thinking there was a blade under there. Especially not one that had been up some poor bastard’s arse.
I love Abercrombie’s humor, especially given how actually rather depressing Isern’s age of killing was. It always serves to give levity to some heavy stuff in the story, preventing the darkness from choking most people whole. It’s the “poor bastard” part of that last line that brings the smile and laughter out.
“Girl, you have a ring through your nose.”
“I am aware.” And Rikke stuck her tongue out and touched the tip to it. “It keeps me tethered.”
Hey, you want to know another part of why I really like Rikke? Nose rings are fucking cool. Gives her a distinct appearance and fashion.
Now if only other prophets had nose rings instead of cloaks and vague portents, I wouldn’t find them so bloody boring.
“You’ve a wolf on your shield,” she said.
“Stour Nightfall’s mark,” growled the big man, with a hint of pride, and Rikke saw he had a wolf on his shield, too, though his was scuffed almost back to the wood.
(Looks at his book) Well, shit! The cover’s actually relevant. I was eyeing the UK cover better, but now that this US/Can one has meaning, I can accept it.
Also, Stour Nightfall is the coolest fucking name. Can’t wait to meet him!
“Nightfall’s the greatest warrior since the Bloody-Nine!” piped up the young one. “He’s going to take back Angland and drive the Union out o’ the North!”
(Arches an eyebrow) I don’t take issue with taking back Angland, there’s some valid enough history with Casamir that I don’t blame the North for it, but how did what I theorized to be Calder’s son become such a beef-cake? But really? Greatest warrior since the Bloody-Nine? I can’t help but think him a cut-price Bloody-Nine now.
“The Union?” And Rikke looked down at the wolf’s head badly daubed on his badly made shield. "A wolf ate the sun,” she whispered.
Thank you, Rikke, I studied English lit in high school. I can do my own analysis of symbolism and visions.
Rikke’s arrow stuck into his back, just under his shoulder blade.
Her turn to say, “Oh,” not sure whether she’d meant to let go the string or not.
A flash of metal and the old man’s head jolted, the blade of Isern’s spear catching him in the throat. He dropped his own spear, grabbed for her with clumsy fingers.
“Shush.” Isern slapped his hand away and ripped the blade free in a black gout.
The inexperienced child and hardened warrior dynamic continues with Rikke accidentally, not knowing if she meant to or not, dooming a boy to death and Isern, experienced hand at the black business, aims for the kill and gives her enemies no ground to gain leverage upon her. But, ultimately...
“You killed ’em.” Rikke felt all hot. There were some red speckles on her hand. The big one was lying on his face, shirt soaked dark.
“You killed this one,” said Isern. The lad knelt there, making these squeaky little gasps as he tried to reach around his back to the arrow shaft, though what he’d do if he got his fingertips to it, Rikke had no idea.
... no one’s hands in this world remain clean for too long.
“Then killing ’em was all o’ the one choices we had, eh? Your problem is you’re all heart.” And she stabbed Rikke in the tit with one bony finger.
“Ow!” Rikke took a step away, holding her arms across her chest. “That hurts, you know!”
“You’re all heart all over, so you feel every sting and buffet. You must make of your heart a stone.” And Isern thumped her ribs with a fist, the finger bones around her neck rattling. “Ruthlessness is a quality much loved o’ the moon.” As if to prove the point, she bent down and heaved the dead lad into the bushes. “A leader must be hard, so others don’t have to be.”
First off, I stabbed my own chest with my own finger just now to see how much it hurt. I can only imagine the increased discomfort with doing it to breasts.
Second off, to give my first impressions of Rikke... well, it’s funny. I once talked to a great friend of mine who we love to talk tropes and stories and fiction about and I told him I generally don’t gravitate to the rougher shit-talking tomboy and the prophet character tropes. To be quite frank, the former bores me on general lack of craft (everyone seems to think the trope itself constitutes a strong personality!) and the latter is just dry plot exposition on two legs generally, full of billowing cloaks and being fuck-useless 99% of the story.
Rikke might have been love at first sight for a few reasons.
The consequences of prophecy. I keep nailing this point, but I do for a reason: I have rarely seen a prophet actually endure physical ailments for their magical gifts, and the headaches, the fits, the burning hot eye, and the shitting? It helps ground Rikke’s struggles in less abstract details so we can sympathize better. We might not have had visions, but we’ve had headaches, hot eyes and shat before.
She’s got a personality! She’s rough, she gives as good verbally as she gets, but she’s also kind and not someone who goes for violence as a first resort. But, at the same time, she’s definitely got her flaws. She’s a whiner. There’s a touch of naivety and inexperience that shows when she talks how times were different when Dogman was fighting and Isern shuts that illusion down, there’s even a softness in her with how she said they should’ve given Stour’s thugs a chance.
Her partnership dynamic with Isern is really winning, allowing more of her personality to bounce off of Isern while having some sass of her own to snap back at Isern, allowing her to have a personality to bounce off of. It allows for development of both characters in a way that Abercrombie’s first attempt at having an early traveling pair in Malacus Quai and Logen can never match, given all the personality leaping off the screen.
The tonal difference. Rikke is a really decent kid dropped into the Circle of the World. In any other series, my eyes would glaze over in boredom. In here? There’s so much misery and depressing reality that happens in the Circle of the World, that it looks like it’ll be a treat to see how she’ll interacts with the older, hardened generation of characters and how much decency might touch upon them. And that only makes Isern’s advice to her all the more interesting. Because her being all heart is hardly Bayaz’s ideal tool and I get the sense that her turning her heart into stone won’t be a smooth ride.
The nose ring. I’m sorry if it makes me shallow, but that’s a cool design choice and love the tethered justification.
The morning mist was long faded and she could see all the way across the patchwork of new-planted fields to Uffrith, wedged in against the grey sea behind its grey wall. Where her father’s old hall stood with the scraggy garden out the back. Safe, boring Uffrith, where she’d been born and raised. Only it was burning, just the way she’d seen it, and a great column of dark smoke rolled up and smudged the sky, drifting out over the restless sea.
(winces) Well, that’s one part of the prophecy dealt with.
Isern wandered from the trees with her spear across her shoulders and a great smile across her face. ‘You know what this means?’
‘War?’ whispered Rikke, horrified.
“Aye, that.” Isern waved it away like it was a trifle. “But more to the matter, I was right!” And she clapped Rikke on the shoulder so hard she near knocked her down. “You do have the Long Eye!”
Hah! Somehow, Isern, I think she won’t take the blessing of that statement and only see the curse of it.
So! Theory-crafting on the prophecy itself!
The only tower I know of in the North was in the High Places, and given Isern’s with Rikke, I can imagine that’s certainly plausible. Either that or somewhere in the Union, given its towers, especially the Tower of Chains?
The battle below a red hill will be one of our battle set-pieces. Definitely something like the Casualties chapter in The Heroes.
Uffrith already burnt, but it was the first thing to happen, so the people hanged from towers and the red hill battle are yet to happen.
“I saw a wolf eat the sun” Stour taking down the Union.
“Then a lion ate the wolf” Leo taking down Stour, which I’d normally take as a sign I shouldn’t get invested because I already know the outcome... but given Grom-gil-Gorm’s prophecy twist, I think there’s plenty of ways this could easily turn twisted, especially with Black Calder about.
“Then a lamb ate the lion” I heard a decent amount of people say they thought it’d be straight-up Lamb and, man, NO. The point of Red Country is that, deep down, Lamb was only pretending to be a lamb and was really a wolf in lambswool. Someone who genuinely is worthless... Orso, from the blurb, seems to fit the bill, given that Leo’s been hoping for help there.
“Then an owl ate the lamb.” Bayaz with Orso. Owls are symbolized as knowledge and Bayaz’s being the First of the Magi, feels right for that... and given that Orso is part of the royal family and how Bayaz “ate” Jezal, I can’t say him repeating it with Orso is implausible. My only worry is, how will this be new from Bayaz and Jezal’s deal?
