Fic-to-Art #39: Gladiator's ELEVENTH Anniversary! (+ BONUS: Fic-to-Art #36...)
And here we are! March 26th arrived and I did not forget about it, but I paid for my ambitious madness with my wrist and forearm. Somehow, I finished my intended pieces on time, but I do not advise that you ever try to make 9 artworks in 3 days. No, sir. Bad life decisions, that's what that was... but this fic, as anyone knows, moves me to do things I never thought possible, starting with writing the fic itself!
It's really crazy every time it hits me that I've been doing this for as long as I have. It's been a complicated, chaotic journey, with its many ups and downs, but ultimately, it has been our journey. For some people, this is just one more fic in the pile: for me, it's been the best adventure of my life so far. Everyone who has ever been touched by Gladiator, who has ever cherished this story, who's looking forward to the big conclusion, who wants to see how the chaotic war is going to end... you're all part of this crazy adventure along with me, and I can only thank you for joining me.
This year, I had no time to make as big a project as I usually go for. Thus, I did a sort of free-for-all edition of Fic-to-Art over at Patreon and challenged myself to draw as many scenes as I could, out of their suggestions. I even sprinkled in a few scenes I impulsively wanted to draw because I loved writing them or because I look forward to writing them... and this is the result!
In order, the scenes are as follow:
Sokka combing Azula's hair, a common occurrence throughout the story.
Azula watching over a convalescing Sokka in the Chase of Jeong Jeong arc.
The outcome of Sokka's final battle in the Superior Gladiator League, namely a moment where Sokka and Azula more or less gave away their relationship's true nature to the public by raising their hands towards each other...
And now, spoiler territory! Some were by my choice, some by Patreon requests:
An important moment shortly after Sokka and Azula reunite.
Azula confronting her father, with a LOT of backup.
Xin Long's long-awaited freedom.

And the big final one is ACTUALLY Fic-to-Art #36 but hahaha woops I didn't post it here on time because it was super hard to finish since I had a LOT of things going on... but here it is now! :'D it's a glimpse VERY far into the future of this fic's timeline!
Alright, that should be enough talking and explaining. Some things are vague, some things aren't, but ultimately I really hope you guys will be looking forward to the scenes you haven't seen yet, and to Gladiator's eventual outcome.
So now... with all this being said and done, I'm gonna go take a trip down memory lane and watch my Tenth Anniversary video once more! Feel free to do the same thing if you'd like to commemorate the fic, I think it's a good way to experience Gladiator all over again, hahaha.

Azula swallowed hard: her grip on the doorframe grew more unsteady yet, and Rui Shi gritted his teeth as he raised a hand to her disorderly hair.

"I'd… I'd rather stay with you. I'd rather help you, see to it that you can move forward," he said, softly, cupping her face delicately. Azula's trembling only worsened despite he served as a source of stability… what he always had represented for her, in his own way.
But as the man she had come to rely on as a brother held her in his arms, the Princess's certainty that this was the right way forward only surged and strengthened. She had already torn her heart asunder for good when she had said goodbye to the man she loved… saying goodbye to valuable friends, who deserved better than death, better than the lives of renegades she was condemning them to, would sting as a heap of salt poured on her painfully open wound.
This is a very beautiful scene. I was so focused on Azula and Sokka's seperation, on their pain that I faded out my favorite characters, the guards totally. This was just as painful as Sokka going... though I still haven't read that moment... one day... one day for sure
Azula and Rui Shi's relationship is just perfect. He is a true friend and a true brother, never betraying her or leaving her side. Best OC ever!!

Drama Gossip: The Spirealm (致命游戏)

It started off peculiarly; first, his domestic cat refused to let him cuddle it. Lin Qiushi soon found that a sense of disharmony and incongruity began to pervade everything around him. Then, one odd day, he pushed open a door, and he discovered that the hallway he was familiar with turned into a boundless corridor. At both ends of this corridor were twelve, identical iron gates. Thus, the story began.

Action, Adventure, Augmented Reality? Sign Me Up!
I do not consume everything that has the 'entering a virtual game with real life consequences' plot-line but when I do, I more or less will enjoy them. The Spirealm is exactly that plot-line and after just finishing 19th Floor (another Chinese drama with similar concept), I was expecting more and hoping for lesser disappointment.
This drama did not disappoint at all. Lets first talk about the roles and the cast. Brilliant job on the casting, everybody pulled off their role so wonderfully, it felt like they were made for their roles. As for the characters these actors portrayed, wow. I haven't been obsessed with a fictional Chinese character in such a long time but Ruan Lan Zhu is so easy to be obsessed with. The writing was brilliant because I very quickly grew attached to the main people and when shit hit the fan, yeah, I felt everything as if I was a part of them.
Spoilers going on from here so if you haven't watched the show, go and watch it now, please?
As I was saying, I was so attached to some of the characters, I really, wow... Say Li Dong Yuan first. I actually already was spoiled with his death, I even knew which door was going to cause his death yet when it happened, I physically gasped. Then his farewell scene came about and goodness gracious, Xiao Zhuang's reaction was absolutely heart-wrenching. It really did not help that right before getting stabbed, the door Dong Yuan went through for Ling Ling was one of the most entertaining and comedic doors.
After that Zao Zao's death? She was already trying her best in the real world, she tried her best in the spirealm. She gave one of the best speeches ever. Yet that chandelier... I never hated chandeliers as much as I do now.
That's the thing about The Spirealm. This show has plenty of heartbreaking scenes but at the same time, it has a bunch of hilarious scenes too. You really can go from laughing one second and then depressed the next. Exactly like when Cheng Yi Xie sacrificed himself for his brother? One second I was laughing at Lan Zhu begging for Ling Ling's forgiveness and suddenly I was pissed but before I could even get real mad, I was hit with a broken heart. This may sound like a complain but the roller coaster of emotions made this drama ten times more interesting than other dramas.
Moving on to the game or doors or levels (however you want to call them). I really, really enjoy shows with this concept but many a times, the stakes just aren't high enough. Not The Spirealm though. I mean, look at Dong Yuan, Zao Zao and Yi Xie. They are part of the main leads and that world did not go easy on them. As much as I hate that they died, I really appreciated the high stakes in this drama. It made watching the show so much more worth it.
Anyhow, despite thoroughly enjoying this drama, I have so many questions. First things first, did I miss the significance of the necklace Lan Zhu gave Ling Ling during the first door?
Also (this is not that important by the way), when the time comes, the players have no choice but through the door. We've watched Ling Ling enter his doors plenty a time. Now tell me how did Wu Qi survive?
I may be someone who loves an ambiguous ending but if the theory that everything was not real is in fact real, I hate it. Yet, everything being a part of Ling Ling's dream or "hallucination" does make sense, as much as I hate it. Remember where Ling Ling walked into upon completing the first door? He entered the door in the middle of the road and exited it into his house? The discrepancies started right from the beginning. Which (if I did not miss anything) might explain the lack of significance behind the necklace. It will also explain why Ling Ling's time between each door is never long yet Wu Qi's not worried about his next door when he witnessed Dong Yuan's death? Or that Chen Fei's advancement is so much slower than Ling Ling. Furthermore, I'm supposed to believe the crew learnt about a mysterious man who helped Xiong Qi reunite with Xiao Ke in the spirealm and they did not investigate more?
I really do hate the everything was not real theory but I also cannot deny it's the most reasonable one. There was another theory I chanced upon on Douyin a while back and have since forgotten most of the information. However, I like that theory a lot even though it was quite farfetched. Long story short, the user theorised that after Lan Zhu walked into the portal and cleaned the program, Ling Ling woke up and regained consciousness after being hit, right? That's not reality but the 12th door and the door god for this last door is Lan Zhu. That was all I remember but the user did provide explanations and timestamps for their theory and upon reading it, it did make sense too. Therefore, if I ever come across that video again, I will link it here.
In the meantime, let's wallow in the conclusion of The Spirealm. It was a quick and short ride but an extremely memorable one.

the thing about the queer media tournament that really gets me is that last i checked there wasn't a single mxtx work on it. like not even the untamed made it in and don't get me wrong the og mo dao zu shi books are huge but cql is def more popular among tumblr circles. idk it just really rubs me the wrong way how every single piece of western media that ppl have ever gotten a lil bit aggressive abt shipping with is there and then for east asian media there's utena and madoka magica and the handmaiden and last i checked that was pretty much it. and then for the rest of the world there's next to/nothing but idk enough to really make judgements there.

This is a fantasy historical drama that is quite unique in its storyline with its tale of different takes of ‘supernatural’ beings. I enjoyed it immensely even though it may have have a bit of plot holes here and there it does not take you away from the overall storytelling. I kind of think of it as a detective, romance, mystery, slash comedy drama. The main leads have a ton of chemistry together which makes it even more enjoyable with a brilliant all around cast. My only gripe is the lead up to the ending of the cliche overall mystery (it was a obvious who the villain was from the start) I just wish it was not so rushed at the last few episodes. It just felt like everything was thrown together. Nonetheless this is still for me a high recommendation and a hidden gem.

Fic-to-Art #22: "She's going to get me killed, and then fired. And then killed some more."
This month, I dared ask my Patrons to choose a specific quote they liked from my story. Some prompts were emotional, most were very nostalgic... and this one was the winner xD
I can't presume to know with any certainty if this is Rui Shi's most iconic line, but it's definitely one that made enough of an impression on people to vote on it above the other prompts! It's not the first time I draw something based on this scene, I actually did it for this project back in the very fourth entry, also because people voted for it xD I admit, it's a very fun scene to revisit. I really love these two, and having good excuses to draw them more often is 100% fine by me.
Much as it was the last time, I've removed Rui Shi's helmet because he's way funnier this way xD I usually let him look more dignified in art, but what can I say? This is one of the few times when he had a very unforeseen emotional reaction to something, and I had to do my best to depict it to the best of my ability.

I failed… because I needed you far more than I needed safety and peace.
I will come to you. I will see you again. I will set you free, even if you don't want me to do that. I will meet Hotaru, too. I will hold the two of you, and I'll never let go of you again, come what may. The world won't get in the way again. I know it won't.
So, here are my favorite lines from Sokka's letter to Azula. To read to full letter, you need to visit Chapter 345. I liked so many parts of the letter, but it would be too many edits. So I decided to share the ones I liked the most.
I would never fight you, not in this way. I would never let anyone bring you harm, either.
I hold your necklace every night
Every day spent recovering, waiting, preparing my next move, is a day I grieve over how badly I need to be near you again. To think we've as good as spent a whole year apart, Azula… the very concept is unthinkable. I could barely survive a day without you. You mocked me for it many times, didn't you? Even when you didn't, you would tell me I needed to learn to live without you, or so… turns out I haven't, believe it or not, even after a year. I can't shake off this anxiety. I can't shake off the fear of failure. I can't put aside my dread that I won't ever see you again.
… you have a place in the Southern Water Tribe, should you want it. There's so much I should be able to share, but I'll run out of parchment at this rate. Believe it or not, you've become the Tribe's hero in many ways.
I was terrified that you'd be alone, but if she's there, that's at least one small respite,
Her mother is safe, by the way. So is her fiancé. Him and his friends stand with me now. I know that might come as no relief for you… but it might be good for you to know they escaped the Fire Nation's reach. Maybe we'll fulfill our old promise still, huh? Maybe we'll be able to share another meal, the four of us, once again. Guess we might be more than four people by the time we can meet again… but you know what I mean, right? Of course you do.
Hell, this stupid parchment should be longer. They told me it was the biggest one they had. I don't buy it. This is frustrating. Everything is without you. I wish you could answer, but I know that's impossible. I settle for believing, for hoping, that you'll be able to read this letter and know that I'm still thinking of you, across every single day of this miserable life without you. I won't ever stop longing for you. My energy resonates with yours still. I feel you deep inside me, underneath my skin, in my heart and soul. I don't know if you feel me the same way… but I can only hope so. I can only hope that I'll see you in my dreams again. That soon, those dreams will become reality once I hold you in my arms again. The one hope that keeps me afloat, amid all this darkness, is that I'll be returning to your light one day.
I love you. I'll always love you. Don't forget that, no matter what comes next.

Tsukasa and Rui are known collectively amongst their classmates as "Oddball 1-2 Finish" (in the JP, KR, and TW servers. The English localisation calls them "Weirdo Wombo Combo"). Due to this, they are frequently asociated with the numbers 1, 2 and any combination or variation of the two (12, 21, etc), both individually and as a duo.
In terms of cover songs, there's Telecaster B-Boy, where they sing the counting part at the beginning. Tsukasa says the number 1, and Rui says the number 2. Tsukasa is Oddball 1, and Rui is Oddball 2.
There's also a lyric in Oki ni Mesu mama sung by Tsukasa, that goes "Waiting for the "1, 2..." signal, holding hands with you is an act of courage for me". Whilst the lyric itself is entirely coincidental, having Tsukasa sing it was very likely intentional. The cover supposedly represents the growth in trust between Tsukasa and Rui, so with that context in mind, one could view the lyric as a reference to Tsukasa reaching out his hand to Rui at the end of the main story, a significant step in the development of their mutual trust.
There's also a few instances of staff releasing content for them on the 21st of a month. Examples include the Fixer 2DMV, which released on September 21st 2023, and their 2022 Summer Memorial illustration releasing on the 21st of August that year. This was also the 12th illustration in that series.
Coincidentally (or maybe not), A Story Where You Are the Star released on the 22nd of November 2023, or 11/22, and featured them both as 4* cards on the accompanying gacha. The event was announced the day prior, on the 21st again.
Rui's 3rd Anniversary Countdown illustration depicted their pillow fight from A Once-In-A-Lifetime Pandemonium!?, an event focused on their relationship, and was released 12 days before the anniversary.
The OST that plays during their Romeo and Juliet rehearsal in KAMIKOU FESTIVAL!, Ma・Ai no Theme ~True Love Song~, was later reused in A Song of Vows for You, Dressed in Pure White and released on the 2nd OST Album alongside the other music from that event. However, instead of being listed with the other tracks from that event on the album, it's listed as track 12.
Them being in class 3-C is a pun based on their status as Oddball 1-2. C is pronounced as "shi" in Japanese, which is the same as how the Japanese word for four is pronounced. Tsukasa and Rui being in class 3-C makes 1 2 3 4. Additionally, 1+2=3, and if you apply A=1, B-2, so on, then this also applies to A (Tsukasa's original class) + B (Rui's original class) =C.
There's also various smaller references, such as the full combo for KING on expert being 1002, Tsukasa growing 1cm and Rui growing 2cm at the 3rd anniversary, as well as Tsukasa telling Rui in the main story that he'll put 12000% into any role Rui gives him. The 12000% quote was also referenced in the 2DMV for their Dappou Rock cover.
