Thoughts on Ron and Hermione as a ship?
thank you very much for the ask, @thesilverstarling!
i’ll state my position straight away: book ron and hermione are the best of the canon couples.
they will have a long and extremely happy marriage made rich by great and stalwart love, lust, fun, and faithfulness, rather than held together by duty and couples’ therapy like so many readers and authors (including jkr, who seems to have decided to spend the years since the conclusion of the series failing to understand anything about her own characters) tend to think.
i will state another position straight away: lest i seem like i’m just a fan with blinkers on, i think this even though hermione is, by far, my least favourite member of the trio. if she were real i would detest her, and i dislike how she is treated by the narrative as always justified in her negative characteristics. i like fanon hermione - perfect and preternaturally good - even less.
as a result, i think that it’s ridiculous that jkr has said that she thought ron needed to ‘become worthy’ of hermione. they belong together as equals - which is what they’re set up in the narrative as being from the off - and i hate seeing that undermined.
because ronald weasley? he’s an icon. and he doesn’t get anywhere near the respect he deserves in fandom.
there are multiple reasons for this - ron’s narrative purpose is to be the everyman sidekick, and so he is able to be less special than harry or hermione (the helper-figure); the amount of aristocracy wank in this fandom means that the weasleys’ ordinariness is less appealing to writers than making harry have twenty different lordships and call himself hadrian; the narrative interrogates ron’s flaws - especially his capacity for jealousy - much more intensively than it interrogates either hermione’s (cruel, inflexible, meddling) or harry’s (reckless, self-absorbed, judgemental) - but one i feel is particularly significant is that ron is such a british character that many of his traits are not understood as intended by non-british readers.
in particular - as is outlined in this excellent meta by @whinlatter - ron’s sense of humour isn’t indicative of immaturity or a lack of seriousness, but is, in fact, evidence that he’s the most emotionally aware of the trio.
ron is shown throughout the series to understand how both harry and hermione need to have their emotions approached - and i think there is no piece of writing which says this better than crocodile heart by @floreatcastellumposts:
That was what she liked most about Ron, she thought vaguely. He was very good at being suitably outraged on your behalf. For Harry, for her, for Neville. That sort of thing mattered, when you were hurt or embarrassed or wronged in some way. You needed to have someone else on your side, to be as emotional as you felt, maybe even more so, so that you might feel a bit more normal. It was very decent of him, and she was not sure he realised he did it.
ron’s inherent emotional awareness is an enormous source of comfort to other people. he does the work which isn’t flashy or special - he makes tea and tells jokes and is just there - but which is needed in healthy human relationships far more frequently than a willingness to fight to the death for the other person.
[as an aside, this normality - even though i think it is assumed rather than justified by the text - is also what ginny provides for harry. if you believe that hinny are a good couple but romione aren’t… i can’t help you.]
but let’s look at some specific reasons why ron and hermione belong together:
their communication styles mesh perfectly. ron is the only person hermione knows who feeds her love of being challenged and debated, and who is able to engage in this way of communicating without becoming irate when she refuses to back down. ron is good at picking his battles, but he’s also good at recognising that hermione’s tendency to argue isn’t intended to be confrontational a lot of the time - it’s just the way she works through feelings and problems. he’s far more easy-going about her tendency to nag, interrupt, try to provoke arguments, or speak condescendingly than he’s given credit for - and hermione evidently respects this, since when he does tell her not to push a situation (above all, when she’s trying to needle harry into talking about sirius), she listens to him.
that ron and hermione’s tendency to bicker is taken by fans to be a bad thing is because it’s something harry - from whose perspective the narrative is written - doesn’t understand. harry is extremely conflict-avoidant - he tends to take being pushed on views and opinions he has to be insulting; and he has a tendency to assume that he is right which is just as profound as hermione’s. he and ginny communicate not by debating, but by ginny having no time for his rigidity and refusing to indulge it - but ron and hermione bickering about everything is not a negative thing within their specific emotional dynamic.
[as another aside, this glaring chasm in communication styles is why harry and hermione would be a disaster as a couple.]
they each provide validation the other needs. it’s clear - reading between the lines - that hermione is a tremendously lonely person. the friendlessness of her initial few weeks at hogwarts seems to be a continuation of her experience as a child, and - outside of ron and harry - that friendlessness endures through her schooldays. i’m always struck, for example, by the fact that, when she falls out with ron in prisoner of azkaban, she has no-one else to spend time with, and that this is only avoided in half-blood prince because harry decides not to freeze her out. i don’t think her friendship with ginny is anywhere near as close as fanon seems to imply (ginny has no interest in being nagged either), nor do i think that she’s anywhere near as close to neville (not least because she is so condescending to him) as she’s often written to be.
and this loneliness seems to stretch beyond hogwarts. the absence of hermione’s parents’ from the narrative is - in a doylist sense - clearly just a device to maximise time with the trio all together, but the watsonian reading is that she doesn’t have a particularly good relationship with them. hermione’s obviously upper-middle-class background - the name! the skiing! the holidays in the south of france! - can be presumed, i think, to come with a series of expectations from her parents which she feels constantly that she’s not entirely meeting, particularly expectations attached to academic success.
[for example, the grangers - were she a muggle child - would undoubtedly have ambitions for her to attend an elite university and then go into a prestigious career. tertiary education of the type that they’re familiar with doesn’t seem to exist in the wizarding world - most careers seem to be taught by apprenticeship - and this, alongside all the other divides between the magical and muggle worlds which contribute to the distance between them, would be one very obvious area in which she felt the need to prove herself to them.]
ron, too, has quite a difficult relationship with his position in the family - voldemort’s locket is not wrong to point out that he seems to receive considerably less of his mother’s emotional attention than ginny or the rest of his brothers - and he too is constrained by expectations which he doesn’t know how to explain he has no interest in - above all, molly’s desire for her sons to achieve top grades and go into the ministry.
he also suffers while at hogwarts from being ‘harry potter’s best friend’, something which harry never appreciates. but hermione does. she recognises ron’s jealousy and never allows harry to minimise it (and she and ron are very much aligned on having no respect for harry’s saviour and martyr complexes). she appreciates ron’s strengths - above all his kindness and his sense of humour - and makes him feel as though he’s achieved things with them. and ron does the same for her; he is hugely observant when it comes to her, and he challenges and defends her.
the two of them clearly spend a lot of time together one-on-one while harry’s involved in his various shenanigans (including outside of school - hermione has often arrived at the burrow days or even weeks before harry, and they seem to write to each other frequently when apart). they do this within a relationship which is fundamentally equal. one issue with hinny is that, post-war, harry is going to have to get used to seeing ginny as a peer, rather than as someone he has to protect. but ron and hermione never have that issue - equality is baked into their relationship from the off.
because, to be quite frank, fandom overstates the role that jealousy plays in their relationship. it’s true that ron certainly doesn’t acquit himself brilliantly when it comes to hermione’s relationship with viktor krum (it’s because he’s bi and doesn’t know it yet), and a tendency to externalise his insecurity into trying to make others also feel insecure is one of his primary negative traits (hermione does this too, via her patented lofty voice when she’s trying to condescend to people). but this is often taken as the initial red flag for how the relationship would crash and burn, and ron’s toxic jealousy is often used in fan-fiction as the trigger for emotional and physical violence towards hermione which, frequently, seems to drive her into the arms of either draco malfoy or severus snape… who are, of course, the first people we think of when we hear the words ‘not prone to jealousy’...
but i think it’s important to point out several things in defence of ron’s jealousy over krum. firstly, hermione evidently regards his jealousy as ridiculous - she’s upset by it, yes, but her upset must be understood as being caused by the fact that she wanted him to ask her out. she doesn’t think he’s being possessive, she thinks he’s being stupid. secondly, hermione is equally as jealous over ron’s crush on fleur delacour and relationship with lavender brown. she behaves just as cruelly when it comes to lavender as ron does when it comes to krum - and the narrative only treats her actions as more sympathetic or justified both because harry dislikes lavender too, and because, by that point in the series, jkr has dispensed with any inclination to ever criticise her.
but, outside of this teenage pettiness, ron is never jealous of hermione over things which matter. he is never jealous of her intelligence or competence or ambition or success (indeed, he defends her constantly from attacks designed to undermine her in these areas). for someone who struggles with being overshadowed by harry, he is never upset at being overshadowed by her. he is clearly going to be happy to support her in any of the career ambitions she can be written as having post-war.
and, on this point, i think it’s worth interrogating why so many readers still seem to feel uncomfortable with the idea of ron and hermione having a dynamic where she is the more ‘powerful’ one. [it’s always a bit trite to say ‘but what if the genders were reversed?’, but actually that’s not irrelevant here]. if hermione ends up taking the ministry by storm and ron becomes a stay-at-home father or has a job which is just to pay the bills, what, precisely, is wrong with that? why, precisely, should hermione regard ron making that choice for himself as a negative thing? hermione so often seems to leave ron in fan-fiction because of a lack of ambition - something which seems to be particularly common in dramione - but, in canon, she is shown to not particularly care if ron and harry do the bare minimum when it comes to studying etc. she nags them to do their work so they don’t get in trouble. she doesn’t nag them to do it to the same standard that she would.
and, actually, i think that ron being less ambitious than hermione is something which is key to how well they work. because ron provides not only emotional support, but emotional clarity.
hermione is shown throughout canon to - just as harry does - have a tendency to become obsessive to the detriment of her own health. she is also often - as harry is - emotionally or intellectually inflexible, and finds it hard to move on when what she feels or believes is proven to be wrong. both she and harry are micro-thinkers, who lean towards knee-jerk assumptions and stubborn convictions (and, indeed, hermione has a remarkably hagrid-ish tendency towards blind loyalty).
ron is none of these things. ron is a big-picture thinker (it’s why he’s so good at chess). he’s a pragmatist. he’s the least righteous of the three. he understands that faith and loyalty are choices, and that sometimes these choices will lead to outcomes which are bad or hard. he is the one of the three most willing to own up to having made mistakes. he is the one least likely to act on gut instinct (and, therefore, the hardest to fool - i think it’s worth emphasising that he clocks that tom riddle is tricking harry immediately, the only one of the trio to do so). he understands that things are a marathon, not a sprint. he is the least obsessive.
and these traits contribute to aspects of his character which are underappreciated. ron worries about hermione making herself ill during exams, or when she is using the time-turner, and makes an effort to get her to set healthy boundaries and redirect her anxiety. ron stands on a broken leg in front of sirius or goes into the forest to fight aragog not out of righteousness, but out of choice. ron takes over the burden of preparing buckbeak’s defence when it is clear that hermione is approaching burnout. ron is completely right that harry hasn’t done any long-term planning for the horcrux hunt, and his anger does force harry to tighten up after he leaves the trio. ron has a clear head in the middle of battle. ron makes harry and hermione laugh. ron is unafraid of human emotion. ron arrests harry’s tendency to brood over the little things by looking at the bigger picture. ron will always come back.
ron is bringing his politician wife regular cups of tea and making sure she doesn’t work all night. he is helping his lawyer wife to feel less upset over losing one case by reminding her that she’s won ten others. he is noticing stress creeping in and whirling her off for a dirty weekend, or even just a takeaway on the sofa. he is teaching his daughter to be proud of her ambition and his son to treat women as equals and both of his children that all you can do when you fuck up is apologise and try to do better. he is making hermione smile on the worst days of her life. he is helping her strategise her long-term goals when she gets stuck on the short-term ones. he is telling her straight when she needs to get it together. he is seeing a misogynistic head of department call hermione a ‘silly little girl’ and choosing to tell him exactly what he thinks of that.
ron is the ultimate wife guy. hermione is a very, very lucky lady.

what is your favorite romione fics and what are the ones you’ve written you like the most 👀👀👀👀👀 finding fics on archive have been impossible and a girl is desperate 🌞
Oooh chileeee *rolls up sleeves*
Okay, so I'm listing my all-time favorites below (mostly on FFN since it's been YEARS since I've been plugged into this fandom).
As for my stuff *buries head* this ridiculous ass fic that I wrote when I was FOURTEEN is my main claim to fame (it's trash but also still kinda slaps?). BUT I'VE BEEN WORKING ON A TON OF NEW STUFF. I have six fics coming out this month through the @romione-trope-fest (btw the best active Romione writers are participating in that fest, so you should definitely follow it if you haven't been already! Here's the AO3 collection for the fest.).
ALSO I saw that you are a Renaissance fan. I have one that's 50% done called "Virgo's Groove" and it takes place in the seventh book when Lupin announces Teddy's birth. I can share a snippet tomorrow if you'd like 🙂
Okay enough self promo lol. On to my recs!
Seven Simple Years by HalfASlug (FFN): Best Romione missing moments series ever. I think HalfASlug has the best Ron voice. Everything she's ever written for Romione is worth reading.
Moments by Armaysha (FFN): Another missing moments (I'm a sucker for those) that I feel kind of mixed about, even though it's still one of my favs. The writer has a different take on Romione than most of the fandom. It generally works IMO, but some of the choices she made I really didn't understand. But what she did well, she did really, really well.
I Must Not Tell Lies by TMBlue (FFN): I think this is the best one-shot of Romione's first fuck. TMBlue is GREAT at writing Ron and she's like the queen of Romione smut.
Six Foot of Ginger Idiot by Pinky Brown (FFN): This classic is HBP from Ron's perspective. Pinky Brown is another iconic Ron writer. You can't go wrong with anything she's written, but Biscuits (her missing moments series starting in Book 1) starts dragging in the last few chapters IMO.
Australia by MsBinns (FFN): Post-war series, arguably the greatest Romione fic of all time. To be totally honest, I didn't finish it because it does kind of drag. But I'm always meaning to get back into it. Just know that it's heavy.
Love Me Forever by Aloemilk (AO3/FFN): I JUST read this and I can't stop thinking about it. It's a post-war series that has a great mix of angst, trauma, and fluff (lighter than Australia). The slow burn from Romione's first kiss to a full-fledged adult relationship is perfect and the smut is SO GOOD. Reminds me of the time I stumbled upon porn that made me ugly cry (in a good way?)
Not single fics but thesecondself and realmer06 (both on FFN, although realmer06's next gen stuff is also on AO3) are my favorite one-shot writers.

Friends
I imagine hinny and romione living right next door to each other and spending as much time in each others houses as they do their own. So basically what I’m trying to say is they’re exactly like friends (the show) I mean they even have the iconic sibling duo and the best friend falling for the little sister…

heyyy after 10+ years of literally not thinking of HP at all I’ve accidentally reactivated my romione heart… I found you and you read fic! so I thought I’d shoot my shot on what I’m looking for specifically- just good, devastating post-battle fic, the “we’re both traumatized, but I love you so desperately” type of fic- I’ve found (refound) some of the more iconic longer fics, but wondering what’s new out there in the last few years?
i… i reactivated your romione heart? shut up i’m going to cry omg??? i am trying my BESTEST to find this but i also have two of these in my drafts… no clue when they’ll be finished… do you want a one-hot, a few chapters, or a longggg multi-chap? i can tell you rn mine will only be one-shots because i cannot carry a plot oops ! hopefully these should occupy you for a moment while i find more one-shots and/or finish writing my own (you people need to write more angsty post-war one shots please i beg).
waking up by @hillnerd, 15/? chapters, nearly 170k words, also an australia fic but it is unfinished and i personally haven’t read all of it yet but if hillnerd wrote it, i’m sure it’s great.
what winning looks like series by chanel19, there’s four works in here and they’re all multi-chapter and insanely long, combined 405k words, i haven’t read anything except the first one but i trust that the rest is just as good i promise i’d never rec something that i had any doubts about
waves by sm_jl, one-shot, 1.4k words, listen the first part has the angst you asked for and the second part has the post-war you asked for !!!, i’ll never make a rec list without a shell cottage fic and i am soooooo not sorry about that

Hi, You mentioned you liked the Tent scene in the DH movie which is very rare for Romione fans and book fans… and so I’m curious if there’s other things you like from the films? I would love to know
me fighting for my life in hinny/romione jail after saying i really like the tent scene
Tumblr media
Ok just in defence of the tent scene, which I love for so many reasons in a film series I broadly feel ambivalent about... I love that how plays with the idea of the characters just being kids getting a moment to piss about in a tent with the radio on, while the war rages around them (the song is O Children for a reason, and the fact that the train imagery runs throughout the lyrics... chef's kiss). I think it's a thoughtful twist on that line from DH about them being "three teenagers in a tent whose only achievement was not, yet, to be dead", playing with the teenageness of it all. I also really like how it steps out of being a HP film and plays both with a change of pace but also different forms of media - like, if you're converting something from one form to another (in this case, from a book to a film), you can and should think about what you can do in movies that you can't do in books, and music is so important in that. And I actually really love at the end where movie!Harry and Hermione look at each other and something seems to hang in the balance - I think it works as a bit of a wink and a nod to the audience expectations, but I love that they both turn away from it, because to the two characters there’s nothing of that between them, just deep love and ease with another person that they treasure and are grateful for. And then the song ends, and it’s back to the worry, three minutes of forgetting and back to the hours and hours of waiting and worrying. And although I don't really think of the movie characters as the characters, I do think it works as a way to render a dynamic in book!Harry and Hermione’s relationship by DH, which does have this intimacy, tenderness, and these gorgeous little twinge moments of physical affection:
She hesitated, but recognised the dismissal. She picked up the book and then walked back past him into the tent, but as she did so, she brushed the top of his head lightly with her hand. He closed his eyes at her touch, and hated himself for wishing that what she said was true: that Dumbledore had really cared.
Overall, though, I really don't love the films. I absolutely enjoy rewatching them with friends as a nostalgic relic of my childhood, yes I will re-enact the PS/SS chess scene on request, but I don't think as a series they're very strong, either as an adaptation or as a standalone body of work. My favourite film is probably GoF, because I think it just gets the vibe right: it nails the series shift that happens in book four, in that it delivers boarding school caper vibes immaculately, but then also really nails the political/courtroom scenes (the Barty Crouch Jr trial scene holds up as iconic, oh my god!) and the truly terrifying graveyard scene and the tragedy/agony of the aftermath. But in general I don't think the films are hugely well done, and I think giving David Yates films five through eight was a huge mistake (the man just turns the lights down to show that everything is getting dark and miserable, and directs weak, mannered performances from his actors in scenes that are poorly cut and edited. I will die on this hill). If JKR weren't set to make bank that she's going to pump into toxic TERF lobbying in Scottish/UK politics I'd be excited for the HBO series. Since the films were made we've seen how long-form series television can really be a wonderful medium for delivering quality adaptations and is where some of the most exciting new IP has been coming out of for the past few years, so there's such rich creative energy in that space that could deliver a really quality adaptation. But she is... so I am not!
Other things I like from the films that aren't in the books, after a lot of thought lol:
Burning the Burrow scene — it happened in the wrong film (the Burrow probably was attacked during DH, after Ron is revealed to be travelling with Harry at Malfoy Manor), but I think it’s extremely atmospheric, really chilling and beautiful (the reeds! the water! obsessed) Also it’s basically the best/most bearable Hinny moment in the wasteland of film Hinny........ but I digress
The crackling radio scenes from DH 1 (borrowed these heavily for inspo for Beasts, I love them so much)

If the HP show goes right, then we might see the tide turn on romione hate. I think they might become really iconic now. I'm hoping they add all the sweet moments or even some moments not from books !
Its possible. If the actors who will play Ron and Hermione have good chemistry and the show indeed stays faithful to the books then Romione hate will go down that's for sure.
I agree with you. They should add some headcanon scenes that aren't in books as well. That's compensation for how they portrayed Romione in films.

For Fandoms, what about Harry Potter?
Omg hey! Thanks for playing! Yessss, I am so glad someone asked for this.
The first character I first fell in love with:  Hermione! God, what a queen. A true legend and icon. I still love her to this day and she was 100% a big role model for me growing up.
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:  Dobby. I really didn't like him when he was first introduced, but when I reread the books the second time (so I was probably around 12), I LOVED him. 2nd place goes to Narcissa Malfoy.
The character everyone else loves that I don’t:  This is where I lose all my friends. Ginny. I reeeeeally don't like her, at all. She's lowkey a pick me, and I just don't vibe with that energy.
The character I love that everyone else hates:  Snape. I am basic.
The character I used to love but don’t any longer: James... sorry.
The character I would totally smooch:  Remus... I KNOW, YOU WEREN'T EXPECTING THAT I BET. Or maybe you were, who knows lol.
The character I’d want to be like:  Probably Minerva because she's fucking badass.
The character I’d slap:  Umbridge.
A pairing that I love: Dramione for ever.
A pairing that I despise: Romione. I know, I know. And yes, I ship Harmony before Romione. I really don't think Ron and Hermione work well together.
Ask game!

Top 5 Ron moments please? 😊👨‍🦰 And if I may add/go overboard: top 5 moments Peter was a badass/competent villain (but it went unnoticed) please ? 🐀
Oh you big meanie! >:) First I get Harry now I get Ron and Peter, y’all love picking my fave cuties, don’t you?😂😂
Aight let’s get to work:
Favourite Ron moments:
1. Ron and Hermione’s first kiss (+ Ron worrying about the House-elves 🥺)
"Hang on a moment!" said Ron sharply. "We've forgotten someone!"
"Who?" asked Hermione.
"The house-elves, they'll all be down in the kitchen, won't they?"
"You mean we ought to get them fighting?" asked Harry.
"No," said Ron seriously. "I mean we should tell them to get out. We don't want any more Dobbies, do we? We can't order them to die for us—”
There was a clatter as the basilisk fangs cascaded out of Hermione's arms. Running at Ron, she flung them around his neck and kissed him full on the mouth. Ron threw away the fangs and broomstick he was holding and responded with such enthusiasm that he lifted Hermione off her feet.
Romione has my heart.❤️❤️ Also, the fact that he swept Hermione off her feet both metaphorically and literally?? Such a gentlemen.
2. Ron’s bravest moment.
"No, Harry!" Hermione gasped in a petrified whisper; Ron, however, spoke to Black.
"If you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too!" he said fiercely, though the effort of standing upright was draining him of still more color, and he swayed slightly as he spoke.
MY PRECIOUS ANGEL 😭❤️❤️
Go fuck yourself, Movie!Hermione. THAT QUOTE BELONGS TO RONALD BILLIUS WEASLEY.
The fact that he stood up to whom he thought was an insane, dangerous mass-murderer who also managed to break out of a demon prison, on a mauled, broken leg and then proceeded to wrestle said mass-murderer to the ground, just to protect his best friend.
If you look up true friendship in the dictionary you’ll find a picture of Ron and Harry. (Source: trust me bro)
3. Standing up to Snape while also being fucking hilarious.
"Let us ask Potter how we would tell the difference between an Inferius and a ghost."
The whole class looked around at Harry, who hastily tried to recall what Dumbledore had told him the night they had gone to visit Slughorn. "Er—well—ghosts are transparent—," he said.
"Oh, very good," interrupted Snape, his lip curling. "Yes, it is easy to see that nearly six years of magical education have not been wasted on you, Potter. 'Ghosts are transparent.'"
Pansy Parkinson let out a high-pitched giggle. Several other people were smirking. Harry took a deep breath and continued calmly, though his insides were boiling, "Yeah, ghosts are transparent, but Inferi are dead bodies, aren't they? So they'd be solid—"
"A five-year-old could have told us as much," sneered Snape. "The Inferius is a corpse that had been reanimated by a Dark wizard's spells. It is not alive, it is merely used like a puppet to do the wizard’s bidding. A ghost, as I trust that you are all aware by now, is the imprint of a departed soul left upon the earth, and of course, as Potter so wisely tells us, transparent."
"Well, what Harry said it the most useful if we're trying to tell them apart!", said Ron. "When we come face-to-face with one down a dark alley, we’re going to be having a look to see if it's solid, aren't we, we're not going to be asking, 'Excuse me, are you the imprint of a departed soul?'"
He’s so witty I love him. And yes, to answer what’s going through your head right now; this was an intentional way for me to squeeze in Snape’s iconic sarcasm in this answer.
4. Him joking about Percy not being able to take a joke.
"Don't let Percy hear you saying that," Hermione said, smiling slightly.
"Yeah, well, Percy wouldn't want to work for anyone with a sense of humour, would he?" said Ron, now starting on a chocolate eclair. "Percy wouldn't recognise a joke if it danced naked in front of him wearing Dobby's tea cozy."
Lmfaoo, why’d he have to do Percy like that? XD
5. Roasting Kreacher.
"Who's Kreacher?"
"The house-elf who lives here," said Ron. "Nutter. Never met one like him."
"He is not a nutter," said Hermione.
"His life's ambition is to have his head cut off and stuck up on a plaque like his mother," said Ron. "Is that normal, Hermione?
I died laughing every time I read this. I can’t with him 😭
6. Him defending Hermione from Snape (and yes I’m adding another moment cause Ronald’s an amazing friend)
"That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger," said Snape coolly. "Five more points from Gryffindor for being an insufferable know-it-all."
Hermione went very red, put down her hand, and stared at the floor with her eyes full of tears. It was a mark of how much the class loathed Snape that they were all glaring at him, because every one of them had called Hermione a know-it-all at least once, and Ron, who told Hermione she was a know-it-all at least twice a week, said loudly, "You asked us a question and she knows the answer! Why ask if you don't want to be told?"
Now, onto the Peter moments:
1. The Rebirth of Lord Voldemort
It is ready. Master."
"Now . . . " said the cold voice.
Wormtail pulled open the robes on the ground, revealing what was inside them, and Harry let out a yell that was strangled in the wad of material blocking his mouth.
[…]
The thing seemed almost helpless; it raised its thin arms, put them around Wormtail's neck, and Wormtail lifted it. As he did so, his hood fell back, and Harry saw the look of revulsion on Wormtail's weak, pale face in the firelight as he carried the creature to the rim of the cauldron.
[…]
And then Wormtail lowered the creature into the cauldron; there was a hiss, and it vanished below the surface; Harry heard its frail body hit the bottom with a soft thud.
[…]
Wormtail was speaking. His voice shook; he seemed frightened beyond his wits. He raised his wand, closed his eyes, and spoke to the night.
"Bone of the father, unknowingly given, you will renew your son!"
The surface of the grave at Harry's feet cracked. Horrified, Harry watched as a fine trickle of dust rose into the air at Wormtail's command and fell softly into the cauldron. The diamond surface of the water broke and hissed; it sent sparks in all directions and turned a vivid, poisonous-looking blue.
And now Wormtail was whimpering. He pulled a long, thin, shining silver dagger from inside his cloak. His voice broke into petrified sobs.
"Flesh — of the servant — w-willingly given — you will — revive — your master. "
He stretched his right hand out in front of him - the hand with the missing finger. He gripped the dagger very tightly in his left hand and swung it upward.
Harry realised what Wormtail was about to do a second before it happened — he closed his eyes as tightly as he could, but he could not block the scream that pierced the night, that went through Harry as though he had been stabbed with the dagger too. He heard something fall to the ground, heard Wormtail's anguished panting, then a sickening splash, as something was dropped into the cauldron. Harry couldn't stand to look . . . but the potion had turned a burning red; the light of it shone through Harry's closed eyelids. . . .
Wormtail was gasping and moaning with agony. Not until Harry felt Wormtail's anguished breath on his face did he realise that Wormtail was right in front of him.
"B-blood of the enemy . . . forcibly taken .. . you will. . . resurrect your foe."
Harry could do nothing to prevent it, he was tied too tightly. . . Squinting down, struggling hopelessly at the ropes binding him, he saw the shining silver dagger shaking in Wormtail's remaining hand. He felt its point penetrate the crook of his right arm and blood seeping down the sleeve of his torn robes. Wormtail, still panting with pain, rumbled in his pocket for a glass vial and held it to Harry's cut, so that a dribble of blood fell into it.
He staggered back to the cauldron with Harry’s blood. He poured it inside. The liquid within turned, instantly, a blinding white. Wormtail, his job done, dropped to his knees beside the cauldron, then slumped sideways and lay on the ground, cradling the bleeding stump of his arm, gasping and sobbing.
Despite his whimpering (😏), that scene always came off as so chilling and badass. Never fails to sends shivers down my spine. But, badass or not, you can’t deny he was very much a competent villain in this scene. He single-handedly (he sure was single-handed XD) resurrected Lord Voldemort.
2. Peter’s ingenious frame-up.
"He's got a toe missing," said Black.
"Of course," Lupin breathed. "So simple. . . so brilliant. . . he cut it off himself?"
"Just before he transformed," said Black. "When I cornered him, he yelled for the whole street to hear that I'd betrayed Lily and James. Then, before I could curse him, he blew apart the street with the wand behind his back, killed everyone within twenty feet of himself -- and sped down into the sewer with the other rats. . . . "
"Didn't you ever hear, Ron?" said Lupin. "The biggest bit of Peter they found was his finger."
[…]
"Harry," said Lupin hurriedly, "don't you see? All this time we've thought Sirius betrayed your parents, and Peter tracked him down -- but it was the other way around, don't you see? Peter betrayed your mother and father -- Sirius tracked Peter down --"
"THAT'S NOT TRUE!" Harry yelled. "HE WAS THEIR SECRET-KEEPER! HE SAID SO BEFORE YOU TURNED UP. HE SAID HE KILLED THEM!"
[…]
"I persuaded Lily and James to change to Peter at the last moment, persuaded them to use him as Secret-Keeper instead of me. . . I'm to blame, I know it. . . The night they died, I'd arranged to check on Peter, make sure he was still safe, but when I arrived at his hiding place, he'd gone. Yet there was no sign of a struggle. It didn't feel right. I was scared. I set out for your parents' house straight away. And when I saw their house, destroyed, and their bodies. . . I realised what Peter must've done. . . what I'd done. . . . "
Tbh Peter’s plan was so brilliant. He literally had every single person fooled for over a decade. Like holy shit dude.
3. Peter knowing his worth.
"I found you," said Wormtail, and there was definitely a sulky edge to his voice now. "I was the one who found you. I brought you Bertha Jorkins."
HELL YEAH YOU DID! Baldy Voldy should be more grateful. Like excuse me?? He literally went looking for you, managed to find you and brought you someone from the Ministry, and later resurrected you. And he still claims Peter isn’t useful, smh.
This doesn’t really count as a badass moment, but it certainly shows how useful he is as a villain.
4. McGonagall talking about him
"Hero-worshipped Black and Potter," said Professor McGonagall. "Never quite in their league, talent-wise. I was often rather sharp with him. You can imagine how I – how I regret that now . . ." She sounded as though she had a sudden head cold.
Not a badass moment, and one would think this was an irrelevant moment that doesn’t hold much water. But it very certainly does. It shows how Peter pretended to be a snivelling coward who had a man-crush on both of his “superior” friends, thus painting himself as someone who would never have the gall to betray/murder anyone, especially not his friends whom he “admired.”
Think about it. You would never think the whimpering, not-so-talented-in-terms-of-magic coward who fangirled over his friends would ever manage to betray them, get them murdered without hesitation, frame another one of his friends and sending him to a dangerous secure prison surrounded by soul-sucking creatures by killing 13 muggles in an explosion, cutting off his finger and faking his death in the process.
It was all a big, brilliant set-up, showing how excellent of a manipulator Peter was.
I could only list 4 Peter moments, so I’m sorry about that.😅
Thank you for your insanely-hard-to-answer-but-very-fun-to-write ask!😂 Have a lovely day!❤️

@hprecfest | week one
Tumblr media
day one | a favourite fic under 5k
a dream of winter by Delphi (1.4k words) summary: Three glimpses into the life of Kendra Dumbledore. (An interpretation of the ambiguous description of the character in Deathly Hallows.)
One of my favourite things fanfiction is capable of is correcting canon -- not just in no-one-dies fix-it fics, but by taking clumsy exposition at its word and expanding on it. This fic takes the odd description of Kendra Dumbledore in DH and breathes life into her as a Mohawk woman living on Godric's Hollow.
day two | a comfort fic
the secret diary of hugo granger-weasley, aged thirteen and a half by @floreatcastellumposts summary: Rose says that I am an oblivious moron, but would an oblivious moron have such a deep and sensitive diary? I don't think so. No one knows how I suffer in this ridiculous family. Written for SIYE's The Burrow Secret Challenge 2016, and inspired by Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole.
A particularly great comfort read for this time of year: Hugo, who Flo characterizes perfectly as an awkward, oblivious, serious teenager with a diary, tries to get to the bottom of a mystery at the centre of a busy Weasley Christmas.
day three | a podfic
the last enemy by @shootwithintenttokill @chdarling's Marauder's series is already one I recommend to everyone (even non-fanfic reading HP fans) and @shootwithintenttokill's undertaking of turning it into a podfic is so impressive. New chapters are slotted into my regular podcast listening routine and they're an excellent way to re-read TLE and pick up on all the wonderful foreshadowing in CH's fic.
day four | a fic with art
no amount of therapy can help by The_wig_is_a_metaphor summary: The entire internet is aware of occultist youtuber Lord Voldemort's infatuation with niche content creator JustHarry. The entire internet is baffled.
This is a Muggle HarryMort Youtube AU told epistolary-style with screenshots, comments, text threads, and it's the funniest thing I've ever read. Every single icon and screenshot is a joke and I still find new things to laugh at on every reread. As a bonus, this fic inspired one of my very favourite confused-bi!Ron-Romione Muggle AUs, HOW TO BUILD WATER WHEEL by doshu
day five | a non-ao3 fic
not as a last resort by Arabella summary: Hermione and Ron, a snowstorm, and Hagrid's cabin. Takes place during fifth year. This story was written prior to the release of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."
Now only available on a wayback machine capture of sugarquill.net, one of my first favourite fics and my introduction to the "only one bed trope"! This fic surprisingly holds up, despite being written before half the series' worth of characterization. Some things make me laugh looking back (like the fanfic writers' steadfast belief that the yule ball would be an annual event) but overall it's just as sweet and romantic as the first time I read it when I was 14.
day six | an unreliable narrator fic
the disappointments of cormac mclaggen by morgs_writes(orphan_account) summary: Cormac McLaggen has a hard life, made even worse when Ron Weasley starts stealing everything Cormac desires.
Oh Cormac, HUGE BOY, one of my problematic faves, thinks he's the one who holds all the power when it comes to the Slug Club holiday party. 🙄
day seven | a canon compliant fic
the mountain tomb by @nought-shall-go-ill summary: A man and a woman meet at the base of a mountain. With no memories, they don’t know each other, they don’t know their past, they don’t even know their own names. All they know is that they have a difficult journey ahead that they must take together — one that they fear could destroy them in the process.
Since I read a lot of canon-compliant fic I wanted to choose something for this rec that really pushes the boundaries of what that can mean. This fic is misty and ambiguous and fantastical (even for fanfic of a fantasy series) and so worth reading.

Would you ever consider writing Ron/Hermione? Like, as the main ship of the fic?
thank you very much for the ask, anon - and you've definitely brought up something i have been thinking about myself...
obviously, i'm on the record as a paid-up romione defender, and i certainly think that the two of them deserve a far greater fandom presence as a couple than they currently have. i've never vibed with any of the usual non-ron partnerships hermione tends to end up in [although i am much more amenable to ron in other ships - i love a bit of ronarry and i love a bit of dron] and i do share romione fans' exasperation with the way romione-as-a-couple are treated in a lot of fandom discourse, whether because of the impact of the films or because they get in the way of other popular pairings.
and i've definitely thought about some vague plot outlines for romione-centric fics. i'd like to see a version of half-blood prince from hermione's perspective, because her scheming how to get at ron [the mclaggen plan makes me howl every time] is iconic, and i'm obsessed with the potential from so many of the romione missing moments we get hints of in canon, especially the evenings ron and hermione spend alone in gryffindor tower while harry's off on his schemes [and especially the bit in deathly hallows when they fall asleep in grimmauld place holding hands]. i think there's great potential for a big post-war romione epic too - not least because i think ron would be excellent at guiding hermione through the relationship she'd have to rebuild with her parents once she restored their memories.
my issue is that, to be quite honest, i have to be in a certain mood to want to write hermione - and i find it quite difficult to write dialogue etc. for her which doesn't just sound insufferable. while ron has always been my ride-or-die, she's a character i've never vibed with [i have a very low tolerance in real life for all of her most... striking traits] from the very first time i read the books. she's fine as a background character in one year in every ten [the wip I'm writing in which she currently appears] because she's perfect for the genre: it's a murder mystery and she's a lawyer, so her turning up to be pedantic about things is exactly what i want. but i'm not sure i've got the writing chops yet to produce something which centred her which would do her justice as a fully-rounded character - with her good qualities [which i do recognise there are many of! especially her unbelievable loyalty!] given just as much space as her more negative ones - and i don't think it would be enjoyable or fair for anyone for me to write some dogshit in which hermione's just a shrew.
but, you know, never say never... i enjoy reading romione, i enjoy writing female characters as real people, i enjoy anything in which ron features... who knows what the future holds.
[i can promise you won't catch me writing dramione though.]
