a speech about goncharov i made for my public speaking class!

note: this is not exactly what will be spoken for my class, as i am not reading my speech word-for-word. however, this is an outline of the speech i will be presenting, and i thought y'all might be interested in seeing it.

Introduction:

The purpose of my speech is to inform my audience of the fake movie “Goncharov” and how it has impacted me. My goal is to inform my audience of how the fake movie “Goncharov” came to be and of the value it has. 

By a quick show of hands, how many of you have seen or heard of Goncharov before? [Quick pause as I wait for no hands – or almost no hands – to go up.] Alright. So, Goncharov was a 1973 mafia movie supported by Martin Scorsese, and has been widely regarded as the greatest mafia movie of all time. It’s about the Russian mafia in Naples, Italy, and follows a variety of characters such as Goncharov himself, Katya, who is Goncharov’s wife, Audrei “The Banker” Daddano, and my personal favorite, Joseph “Ice Pick Joe” Morelli, with actors such as Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, and Lynda Carter. So, why have you never heard of this movie before? Well, everything I just told you? It’s all a lie. It’s all made up. Goncharov? Yeah. It never actually existed. 

I remember being part of the Goncharov fandom as it first blew up on Tumblr in late 2022. It was a great source of joy for me and made a significant impact on Tumblr’s culture. I am going to show my audience how Goncharov came to be, the creativity is spawned, and briefly reflect on how the website it originated on was vital for its growth. 

So, what is Goncharov, and what is going on here?

Origins:

Goncharov was a fake movie created by Tumblr in late 2022. 

Sometime prior to August 22nd, 2020, Tumblr user ZootyCoon posted a photograph of knockoff boots they had bought that advertised a non-existent movie, Goncharov, on them, claiming that Goncharov was “the greatest mafia movie of all time.” In response, on August 22nd, 2020, another Tumblr user, AbandonedAmbition, commented “This idiot hasn’t seen Goncharov”, which was then added to the post itself by Tumblr user LoserMo. 

While ZootyCoon’s original post did receive some attention, it wasn’t until November 18th, 2022 that Goncharov truly hit it off as a cultural phenomenon, thanks to Tumblr user Beelzeebub, who posted a fan-made poster for Goncharov, receiving almost 20,000 likes and over 15,000 reblogs in three days. 

Fandom:

As it turns out, you don't actually need a piece of media to be real in order for a fandom to form around it.

Countless fanworks were created for Goncharov, including fanart, fanfiction, music, scene analysis and analysis of motifs, gif sets, memes, and so much more. As mentioned in a YouTube video by YouTuber ColeyDoesThings, there was even a time where Goncharov had more fanfiction on a popular fanfiction website than James Cameran’s Avatar, the highest grossing movie of all time. 

So much lore was being created for Goncharov in such a short amount of time that efforts had to be made to record it all. Multiple individuals attempted to create a “master copy” of Goncharov’s lore, including what is now a 48-page Google doc that includes a plot summary, brief descriptions of various scenes, and links and sources to various contributors. 

But Goncharov could not be contained just to Tumblr. Various media outlets, such as The New York Times, The Guardian, Forbes, and The Washington Post all posted articles about Goncharov, an internet phenomenon.

But, why? Why this fake movie, and why on Tumblr of all places? 

As a social media site, Tumblr has an incredibly weird culture. There are no public follower counts, no verification for users, and a whole array of weird social rules. But one thing that really makes Tumblr special is the interaction between large and small blogs alike. Because anyone can and is encouraged to create their own content and add to others’ content, something like Goncharov could very quickly become a “yes, and” game among Tumblr’s users. 

Tumblr is also very much a “fandom” site. Fanart, fanfiction, and other fanworks dominate the website, and Goncharov in its heyday was no exception. Interactions between fans and fan creators is what really causes fandoms to grow and survive, so it makes sense that Goncharov thrived the way it did considering how easy it was to find fellow fans. With no pressure to reveal your “true” self, there’s a lot less pressure when you share what you’ve created. 

Conclusion:

So, what can we learn here?

The fake movie “Goncharov” was unintentionally created by a tag on a pair of off-brand boots but didn’t truly become popular until Beelzebub’s poster. Fandom quickly grew around it, creating countless fanworks, but Tumblr’s unique culture as a social media site is what truly allowed it to thrive. 

There is joy and creativity in unusual places. Whether or not you believe Goncharov to be a waste of time, the popularity of a fake movie says something about the human fascination with stories. Thank you.

** i need to be utterly and completely serious for a second, while this is a real character i will be playing (not a joke), this movie is fake!! this movie is basically tumblr folklore and has sparked the conversation of what is ‘real media’ when there is an accepted storyline, lore, characters, quotes, a SOUNDTRACK, and ‘leaked scripts’, what does it matter that the actual movie isn’t tangible media. the fandom is. also considering it has almost more works on ao3 than avatar !!!! i will absolutely open that debate of what is a real media or not. BUT with that said, i will be tagging anything with sofia in it as ‘unreality’ just to help with anyone who this may bother, considering the source material (or lack there of.) but pls understand i am so deadass serious about how much i love sofia and goncharov (1973). **

unfortunately, once you become comfortable with a lifestyle, it does have a way of constantly dragging you back in. so, despite wanting to be out of it, sofia has found herself back inside the crime ring within the city. it’s different to the mafia scene in 70s italy, but she is finding her footing none the less.

where has your character been pulled from in their fandom

i’ll be pulling her from the end of the ‘movie’, when she is seen taking katya’s boat from the harbor, smuggling paolo out as they both escape naples and the chaos that she found herself wrapped up in. driving the boat into the night is how she found herself here, suddenly no longer in italy and finding herself here in modern day dc.

nope!! she’s still herself, no memory alterations!!

okay so , like i said in the disclaimer , sofia is from a fake movie created by tumblr users and literally is the resurgence of the idea of passing on stories just from word of mouth and nothing more, how so many folklore stories were originally told. the fact that the tumblr user base has come together to create folklore and just like banded together to create this fandom out of literally nothing is the funniest thing ive ever seen and also genuinely so inspiring that there is so much freedom in this kind of fandom!!!! but !!! lemme explain a little about goncharov and sofia’s part in it. (in case you cannot tell i am hyperfixating and a special interest has been unlocked, i am unstoppable now. fueled by a fake mafia movie from the 70s)

SO basically : the setting - alternate reality1970s naples italy, we are following a russian mafia crew who is attempting to create a footing in the italian mob scene. the soviet union had fallen in the 70s in the movie, so the main characters had left russia to escape the political unrest. but, we have our main players here - goncharov (robert de niro) , mario ambrosini (al pacino), andrey (he’s in love with goncharov), katya (goncharov’s wife, sofia’s soulmate), sofia (loml, mario’s implied sister, katya’s soulmate, queen, wants goncharov out of the picture), ice pick joe (henchman, best character in this movie). 

“overrun with homoeroticism”

i unfortunately do not know all the lore of goncharov, mario and andrey as well as i know katya and sofia and i should not be held accountable for that. i saw to women who deserved better and deserved to be in love and what else was i supposed to do?

sofia grew up in an orphanage, raised by nuns in russia. this is where she met katya originally. said orphanage burned down when they were teenagers, and sofia saved katya from the flames.

she had a difficult life after that, found her way to crime not long after escaping the fire, because it was easier to fall in with the mafia lifestyle than continue to live on the streets. 

she does have a prosthetic leg after an accident in her youth.

she’s good at what she does! but she doesn’t like doing it! she wants a different life! she wants to be more than just a pretty face with a gun!

smokes a lot. will light your cigarette for you, but for the price of one kiss unless you’re katya. and then, it’s whatever you want, whenever you want. 

sofia wants katya to leave the mafia world with her, she wants to give her the life she deserves outside of all of this. she knows she is loyal to her husband so she won’t, but man does she wish katya would choose her in the end. 

there’s an entire scene of them at a fruit stand where katya mistakes a pomegranate for an apple, and it sparks a conversation about the symbolism between apples and pomegranates and the biblical implications of the two fruits. sofia explains the whole ‘descent into the underworld’ and it fuels a lot of katya’s actions as she falls deeper into the mafia world. 

also !!!! sofia accidentally spills wine on katya’s white dress and she really looks at this woman and goes “you look better in red” , im in love. IT ALSO FORESHADOWS KATYA’S EVENTUAL DEATH WHERE HER DRESS TURNS RED WITH BLOOD. AND HER SHIFT FROM THE WIFE TO THE FEMME FATALE. JUST SO GOOD. the symbolism scorsese can create *chef’s kiss*

the other major scene sofia has is the boat scene, where katya gets shot and falls over the edge. it almost destroyed sofia thinking she lost her when she barely even had her yet. it’s a big reason for sofia wanting to get katya away from all of this, knowing that goncharov will only bring about her sun’s end. 

in the end , she just loves katya and wants the best for her, but she can never have her, and when she loses her, she’s lost her entire world. and so she tries to escape italy, before any ghosts can catch up with her. leaving in katya’s boat , she takes off into the night as end credits roll over her escape. which is where we find ourselves now. 

life in dc :

sofia has only just arrived but she is having a time and a half trying to adjust to being in america , let alone being in a completely new time. 

she is going to be doing what she can to blend in. 

she is nothing if not resourceful and adaptable. and while it won’t be easy, she does everything with confidence that it’s hard to tell otherwise. 

will be finding a footing in the crime scene here in the city, and unfortunately is very good at her job, despite not wanting to be in this life anymore. it’s what she knows, and it’ll be easier to be comfortable for now. 

gives the best advice, even if you don’t think it is at the time. 

big mysterious older sister vibes for those she allows close to her

is closed off, but willing to make exceptions if people try

has a way too nice penthouse for someone who refuses to explain where they get their money from

Oscar Cram Session 2024 - Watching the Academy Awards Best Picture Nominees

In 2023, there was a unique opportunity brought about by the Streaming Wars and viewing opportunities post-pandemic to be able to watch most of the Best Picture nominees for the Oscars. Last year, I viewed and reviewed 8 of the 10 nominees due to their availability on streaming services. I later saw Avatar: The Way of Water as the 9th nominee I viewed - without going into a review, I rate it a 7/10. Solid entertaining flick. I have yet to watch The Fabelmans.

For this year, there were less of them available to stream - 6 of the 10 Best Picture nominess are out on streaming right now. While there are less, I still took the opportunity to watch the ones that were available. Two of the nominees I actually got to see in the theaters - Barbie and Oppenheimer. I have participated in the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon last summer. I viewed the rest on streaming. For the ones that aren't out on streaming yet, I'll hit those up later. Here are the nominees for the Academy Award for Best Picture: American Fiction (Theaters/VOD) Anatomy of a Fall (Theaters/VOD) Barbie (Max) The Holdovers (Peacock) Killers of the Flower Moon (Apple TV+) Maestro (Netflix) Oppenheimer (Peacock) Past Lives (Paramount+/Showtime) Poor Things (Theaters/VOD) The Zone of Interest (Theaters/VOD)

I'll now review each one that I viewed, listed in alphabetical order. SPOILER ALERT, I will be lightly spoiling plot details of each of those movies.

Barbie (Max)

the Meat Life Rating - 8/10

Barbie was the highest grossing movie of 2023 at $636 million domestic and nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. It was a phenomenon at the box office. Directed by indie darling Greta Gerwig and cowritten by Gerwig and her husband Noah Baumbach, Barbie is a witty interpretation of the world famous doll. Margot Robbie as a producer and as the film's title star brings this doll to life as a story of a woman trying to discover herself in the real world and the Barbie world. It is very much in the vein of many of Gerwig's work as a director and actor (if you liked Barbie, I recommend Lady Bird and Frances Ha - both very similar in many respects). It is goofy and fun while also being very introspective into how modern women have to navigate the world today. And Ryan Gosling really steals the movie in his hilarious portrayal of Ken. Ignore the conservative backlash, this movie has a good message to young girls and women and is fun.

The Holdovers (Peacock)

the Meat Life Rating - 8/10

A new Christmas classic? I think so! The Holdovers has us look at Paul Giamatti as a cranky teacher tasked to watching over kids at a prep school that have to stay over the Christmas break. Great performances from Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa. It is funny and dramatic. A look at a man looking back at past regrets and a student looking at his unknown future. The ending will tug at the heartstrings. Also love the old school vibe with the older era logos and music in the opening credits as well as the altered picture quality - really gives an older movie feel. Very much enjoyable, just felt weird because I watched this after the Christmas season.

Killers of the Flower Moon (Apple TV+)

the Meat Life Rating - 7.5/10

I want to say this upfront: this is not fun to watch. And that's kind of the point of the movie because it is an uncomfortable subject - looking at a string of murders of members of the Osage tribe in Oklahoma in the 1920s. You very much feel all three and a half hours of this film. This is probably not in Scorsese's top 10 films, but it is done very well and is a great look at the Osage community during that era. Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro propel the story and Lily Gladstone's performance was exceptional. There has been a sort of Native American surge of content in entertainment in recent years with this film, FX/Hulu's Reservation Dogs (excellent show), and Disney+/Marvel's Echo. I would recommend checking all those out.

Maestro (Netflix)

the Meat Life Rating - 7/10

This is the first of a pair of bio-pics on this nominee list. In this modern era of film, it is challenging putting together a compelling biography that shares the story of the real person as is also entertaining. Bradley Cooper plays dual roles of directing Maestro and playing Leonard Bernstein in the movie. There are artistic choices that I respect like the 4:3 aspect ratio for the earlier eras depicted in the film, the black and white in the first third and technicolor in the middle third of the film. Carey Mulligan's performance as Felicia Montealegre carries the film. It's a bit unfair to compare, but I feel 2022's Tar was a slightly better film. There are some really strong scenes in Maestro though, and all the music scenes are great with a good sound system.

Oppenheimer (Peacock)

the Meat Life Rating - 9/10

This is the favorite right now to win the Oscar for Best Picture. Oppenheimer is the second bio-pic on this nominees list. The favorite to win Best Picture, Oppenheimer was a surprise box office behemoth grossing $329 million domestic and nearly $1 billion worldwide. Definitely benefitted from the Barbenheimer phenomenon over the summer, particularly because this film is Rated R. I will probably visit the Christopher Nolan filmography soon, but Oppenheimer is definitely toward the top of the list. This film has got a huge ensemble cast. I think the film benefits from the strength of the performances of that ensemble. That being said, it is nice to see Cillian Murphy shine portraying the title character/person over the course of decades shown in the film. Nolan expertly paces this film, so you actually don't really feel the 3 hour run time. Oppenheimer is kind of split into three parts - a J. Robert Oppenheimer origin story, the assemble the team and execute of the Manhattan Project during World War II, and a court drama in Robert Downey Jr's Lewis Strauss Cabinet appointment hearing. Great film!

Past Lives (Paramount+/Showtime)

the Meat Life Rating - 8.5/10

Past Lives is probably my favorite of the bunch that I watched. It is a look at a couple who grew up together in South Korea as teenage friends who get separated and reunite in person 24 years later in New York. It is a great story about immigrating, love, and longing and the Korean concept of "in-yun." It is a fairly unconventional take on a romantic film. When my brother described this film to me before I saw it, he said to prepare for a lot of crying. Most of the way through the film I was fine, but then that final scene gets you. You also get great scenic shots of New York City in the final third of the film. This is the director Celine Song's first feature film, and what a great debut it is. Big time performance for Greta Lee in the lead character Nora.

Those are the Oscar Best Picture nominees I have viewed. I think my next couple of entries will be movie based as well, ranking the Christopher Nolan filmography and a look at Dune Part 2 (once I get to see it).

Todd Phillips's Joker is an unpleasant and occasionally clumsily made movie held together by Joaquin Phoenix's Oscar-winning characterization of the psychotic Arthur Fleck, who becomes at least one of the avatars of the Batman comics character called the Joker. But whatever its defects, Joker also seems to be very much a film for 2019 -- the age of pandemic and civil unrest and societal division, abetted by corrupt and ineffective leadership. It's an ugly film about ugly attitudes, and although it strives to build a psychological explanation for Arthur Fleck's transformation into murderous, anarchic loner, the explanation is pat and clichéd. Phoenix is a great film actor, but to my mind he's much better in movies that call for humanity rather than monstrosity, like Spike Jonze's Her (2013) or James Gray's underrated We Own the Night (2007). Arthur Fleck is an Oscar-milking role, with grotesque body transformation and a plethora of overstated moments. Phillips's film calls for none of the dark humor that Heath Ledger gave his Joker in The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008) or the entertaining flamboyance of Jack Nicholson's version of the character in Tim Burton's Batman (1989). Philips has modeled Arthur Fleck in part on two characters from Martin Scorsese's movies, Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver (1976) and Rupert Pupkin in The King of Comedy (1982), and cheekily cast the man who played both, Robert De Niro, in his film. De Niro gives Phoenix someone his equal to play against, but echoing better movies is never a good idea. Zazie Beetz, a fine actress, is wasted in her role as the neighbor on whom Arthur develops an unsavory attraction, and Phillips muddles the revelation that their scenes together are mostly in Arthur's imagination. The denouement of the film is predictably cataclysmic, but Phillips flubs his ending scene of Arthur confined to the Arkham mental hospital by suggesting rather confusingly that he escapes -- presumably to set up a sequel -- and following it with Frank Sinatra's version of Steven Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns," a wistful song meant to be ironic in this context but really only thuddingly obvious, like much of the rest of the film.
