I was wondering if you think Alastor would make any dawn-themed dad jokes and puns in your AU, and if he does, what would Dawn and Charlie think of them? I can’t really think of any off the top of my head right now, but I know ‘a brand new dawn’ is a phrase he could maybe use!

Now regarding the art advice!! This one got HELLA long so I'll hide it under a cut for everyone's comfort lmao

I know it sounds shallow and like worthless advice, but a huge huuuuge part of getting better at art is to just... make art! Practice makes perfect - it develops your motor skills, gives you somewhat of a muscle memory for certain basic shapes that are a necessity to have a good feel of for good foundation sketching.

Practice also develops your eye for compositing and for how color theory actually applies in practice, it basically helps you develop a more consistent grasp on art as a whole :D

There are some things I've learned over time that definitely helped speed things up though xD

here's some rough sketches I did just to demonstrate what my rougher drawings can look like - also a little diagram (on the right side of the image) of things I keep in mind for the average proportions of a human body!

I tend to sketch very loosely and try to capture the overall vibe and silhouette/rough shapes first before I even think about adding details - there's a certain flow, squish and stretch to everything that's just much easier for me to get a good feel for when I use quick, loose brush strokes and as few lines as possible to convey a concept.

Repeatedly sketching humanoid characters of various shapes, builds and sizes for years genuinely helped enormously in getting not only faster but also more consistent with it!

I'm fairly well practiced with hands and expressions especially at this point since I like to focus on those in my art often, so those come fairly easily to me as well now!

Something I learned along the way about keeping a certain liveliness to my artworks is that sometimes you have to forego anatomical correctness a bit if you want to fully express specific emotions - if you try too hard to keep everything perfectly proportional and realistic, it can make the outcome look stiffer than you might've aimed for - this is something I actually struggle with in my cleaner artworks :'D The ones I do proper lineart for, since a lot of the flow of the original sketch gets lost in the process haha

As for artists/artstyles that inspire me...

There's @/southpauz for example!

Her artstyle is unbelievably expressive and her eye for compositing and her use of shapes is SUBLIME - it inspired me to let loose more with my expressions, exaggerate features a bit more and to push the way I try to vary facial features :D

Then, back when I had that massive Rise of the TMNT phase, the artstyle of it has actually greatly influenced how I draw today!

It manages to be detailed and highly recognizable despite its deceivingly simple style - it exaggerates shapes and uses it to communicate personalities, emotions and action super effectively and taught me a lot about utilizing those more efficiently myself :D

And last but not least Ishida Sui - the mangaka behind Tokyo Ghoul (which used to be a highschool obsession of mine)

His striking use of colors, textures in abstract, yet symbolically heavy ways and his courage to be rough and expressive rather than looking polished, yet also having such a solid understanding of realism blew me the fuck away as a teen and still does now!!!

His art may have less of an influence on my style today than it used to back then, but I think in my more exagerrated, more horror-esque drawings you can kind of see it still :'D Either way I greatly admire him as both a writer and artist.

I blame it on the brush i'm using for the lineart :] I won't change it tho. They need to be a set. I'm already screw.

Ok, i don't remember the ask exactly but i remember reading that Lonny makes the more aesthetically pleasing inventions, but also the less efective. So i thought "Oh, he likes design! What kind of design does he like?" and i think he would really love interior design, which i think you may have mention already or something in that topic? So, yeah, Lonny might be an interior designer. (He would be one of those people that plays the sims just to make cool houses AND HE WOULD BE SO GOOD AT IT. Also, in the Animal Crossing game he shares with Leo and Dea, Lonny is the one that makes the Island cute and neat.)

In that topic, you also mentioned that he has a folder. So i thought it would have a lot of interior design ideas inside. Also that it gives him peace to look at it. This is not a big HC… more like a HC detail /hj But it helps with his anxiety.

I had this HC that i thought before chap 11 (and after Dea's drawing) of Dea and his thoughts. I thought being Deangelo might be really tiring because of all the thought in his head, but he's stable because he has a filter/system to them, so he consumes a lot of energy but is stable. I wanted to mention it because i think Lonny also consumes a lot of energy for of all the paths and worries he has, but doesn't have a filter for them yet and because of that he's kind of an unstable fusion. It's obviously not cannon because in chap11 Dea was outside for days without problem. But idk, i like to compare them. They are both sometimes overwhelmed by their thoughts but Lonny is worst at dealing with them (When he appeared the first thing he did was having a crisis SO-).

You know? Indigo is a weird color. Some people thinks Indigo is this purple shade (like Lonny uses) and others a bright-dark blue? Google Indigo, the differences between the colors is so wild! These are two completely different tones and yet both are considered indigo… (This is not a HC. This is just me being "indigo is not that shade!" at Lonny and discovering that Indigo is a fucking lie.)

Lonny is the only fusion with Leo who i think uses just He and plural they. He might be super gay tho /J

Aaa thank you! Rendering is not something i consider myself particularly good at and i'm still trying to learn, but here's some things i picked up!

Shapes! Edges! Have a balance between smooth, nicely blended areas and really sharp and shaped areas

So imagine you're doing lineart or a sketch. Places where you would put lines (eg. cheekbones, wrinkles etc) are really good places to have some sharp edges. I like to make things smoother and more blended in places where there's more skin.

Undertones!! I color the entire thing in one color (i looove working with green and blue here, but i also play around with different colors as well) and then i build on from that.

DON'T ZOOM IN TOO MUCH. Focus on the big picture. Zoom out and see if the shapes are visible, if your picture is recognizable and doesn't look muddy. It's nice to have distinct light and shadows.

Block things out first and then do details later on. But you don't have to dwell on them too much, it's up to preference really! I usually find that my art looks really weird if i render too many details

Use references, see how light, shadows and colors interact! References are great i love them 10/10 no notes.

If you're rendering a face, know about the planes of the face. This will really help you out, also ties really nicely with the edges and shapes thing. Another thing i love to do is feel it out myself. I just drag my fingers across my face and try to understand how it works, where the bones are, how the skin "wraps" etc!

Don't use too many brushes, it will just look messy and cluttered and out of place.

These are the ones i can think of rn. Most of these are up to preference really and won't apply to every situation or drawing. But yeah! Just experiment, really! Try new things! Have fun with it as well :D

Listen, can you tell me more about your art process? Because honestly everything from your sketches to the final product is amazing and I'm really curious to know how you go about it.

i am finally neither drunk nor hungover so i can reply to this properly! honestly, never expected an ask like this bc this is like. for the good (tm) artists. i started drawing in february, as well as this blog, and i'm still finding and changing things!

either way, what i strongly advise to think about first is a good idea and a good composition: first more important than last, but a drawing can just be hard to look at if it's not well-organized. for some reason, i like to do triangles with a detail in the center to which attention will be naturally drawn.

once i figure out what i want, i start doing multiple sketches: a very rough one with no reference and very thin repetitive lines, then a better one with references and corrections, and then a finer one, with thick strokes. here, you see the final sketch (still not lineart, though), and this is also where i put a base in the background: i find working with a white bg to be inconvenient, and it does add somewhat of an undertone.

then i do the lineart in thinner and better strokes! i'm still playing with the brushes and customizing them, but here are the ones i use rn in ibis paint:

i later go a layer below lineart and fill in the simple colors. even if i plan on making the light green later or using some interesting shadow colors, right now i imagine the lighting is simple and white. i put on the basic shadows by using the multiply layer and some dull pinks.

as you can see, i also color the lineart later with a clipping tool. frankly, by this point, the drawing looks bad. that's where i use the multiply layer again:

in this case, i added light by coloring some parts of the layer with a lighter contrasting color, but sometimes i just erase parts for really bright lighting in an otherwise dark setting, like in the beanix, kristoph and maya drawings in the first picture.

i add light with a normal layer by color-picking, and sometimes just go over the whole thing with a normal layer as well to correct small imperfections. i only use stuff like blurring and hard light layers for the candles, as i like to keep a certain roughness to the drawing.

uhh, what else is there? i do love doing a spot-the-symbolism moment like, everywhere, especially in the fey clan pieces... but i feel the most important part is painting not an image, but a character. this is why I'm so fond of painting from a live model: you don't capture a singular moment, you compile millions of images into one, this capturing the essence of the person, locking time with paint. that's, of course, not the case here, i just like to talk.

either way, just have fun with it!! duplicate your drawings to experiment, use clipping tools, learn some composition and color / shading basics, make things stand out!!

A little late, but here's some of my works from 2023 ! (only cheated a little for months where i did stuff but forgot to publish it, consider it a sneak peak haha) Happy to see my style continue to evolve in a direction im generally happy with, while also occasionally going out of my comfort zone to try out a bit of painting and push my colors a little bit !

Can't wait to be even more obnoxious about my interests (related : bonus AA/DGS only summary under the cut) and post some weirder fanarts over the next year, despite wanting the concept of cringe dead and buried i have trouble applying that to myself so we'll see <3 happy 2024!

i made some fun AAvsPL crossover stuff this year, and while the DGS brainrot that consumed my whole brain this year was slowly going away i have new friends who are discovering dgs1 rn and bringing me back the spark for it... my multishipper heart is happy i could participate in more events this year, but id love to publish more ryulock than before cause the ratio of sketches i make VS stuff i finish and post for them is insane!!! also need to do my ot3 propaganda maybe so i can get even more niche than i was before !! bonus for the people who read all that : see the Herlock in the June slot ? he was not drawn like an emoji on purpose. that lineart was actually made in 2021 when i was playing through dgs1, and finding how to do his face was my personal nightmare (tbh except ryuu none of the dgs characters came "easy" to me). it took time but as you can see now i found a way ! so dont give up if you dont know how to draw your blorbo in your style, it can rly be a struggle but eventually you'll get there!! just gotta be patient with yourself !! (also looking how other artists draw him can help. thank you random ryulock doujin which had rly cool herlock eyes)

Ahhh, your new update looks so wonderful! The dots-thingy we talked about looks amazing here -- having a lower opacity and/or keeping it for the background really does the trick, as well as adding some spacing between the dots and the characters to make them stand out. And using shades of grey to differentiate elements? Perfect.

aw wow thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!! and yeah i was really trying to sort of take what i attempted in the previous update but make it look a bit better, so i just did a lot of looking at what other tmnt artists have done and also looking at some like tutorials for greyscale comics and i ended up with this!!!

and yeah those panels were actually some of my favorites to draw ksldjhfalkjdshf specifically the first one you attached to the ask i had such a blast with that one

i am trying to like make donnie speak a bit more like big mama but a lot of the time i just forget salkdfjhlkasjdhf or i have a hard time incorporating her speech patterns into his way of talking but im working on making my dialogue better so hopefully i can incorporate that some more!

and i use clip studio paint! for lineart i just have my stabilization on suuuuuuuuperr high or maybe its not super high? idk my stabilitzation is at 20 rn for my lineart brush and i thought it was a lot higher but i also have no reference for how much people use stabilization for their lineart so idk oh and yeah i draw on my laptop! i have a wacom tablet that i hook up to it and i draw that way!

Okay!! So!!! For my sketching process I start with just like. A stick figure. Basically

after I figured out that was something I could do it’s helped me IMMENSELY like it’s insane. It’s really good with helping me map out the scene I want, poses, and proportions and stuff. It’s a great starting point for me ig

and then after I get that down I just. Starting gettin to it I guess. Layin down shit y’know

I use a lot of different colors to help like. Differentiate different parts so it doesn’t just all bleed together when I look at it. Helps get stuff looking less wonky for me ig. Also the way I do sketching is a lot of going back and forth and like shifting around lines and smoothing stuff out via erasing. Generally really intentional and not quick or energetic or whatever. IDK it’s hard to explain

I also do a shit ton of moving bits around and resizing and rotating and all that. That’s like one of my favorite things about doing stuff digital is the fact that you can move stuff around basically effortlessly it’s great. That’s my crutch man

after I get my sketch how I want I usually do the background after, depending on if I’m doing a big background or not. I’ll either do the background between the stick figure phase or the entirety of the sketching phase. Doing the background then helps me from getting tired of the thing I’m working on A LOT like it’s like. A break I guess. Cause I don’t like sketching but I fucking love doing the backgrounds.

and for my backgrounds I have. Absolutely no idea how I do those it’s such a process. I black out when I do them I don’t notice the exact way I do them /silly /j But usually I’ll lay down the base shapes and colors and then do just. So much rendering. Like it’s really just me fucking around with colors and lighting and shading and stuff. That’s also usually when I establish the palette I wanna use for the piece. And I usually do the background in one go.

Then after the background I do lineart, which isn’t that exciting so I don’t got a lotta say about it. Same thing with the base colors, which I do after the lines.

THEN after that’s when it gets fun, which is when I do the rendering. For this it’s just a lot of me fucking around with shading and colors again I do like. Fifty (/j) passes of shading and lighting and just. Colors. I usually start with like a base of cell shading, which I’ll either leave as is or soften the edges with one of my brushes. Depends on the piece. THEN I’ll go in with my airbrush brush and slap on a bunch of the same shading color to like. Add interest I guess. usually I’ll keep my focus where my light source isn’t instead of just doing it all over it IS deliberate. Generally keeps stuff from being as flat as it would be if it was just the cell shading. And I do that for several layers and mess around with opacity and etc

these are kinda some good examples you might be able to see what I mean here

after I get the shading down’s when I fuck around with like. Overlays??? Sorta but not really but I dunno how else to describe it. Basically this is when I start layering on whatever my lighter value is. Usually it’s a bright red or a bright purple. In the spots I didn’t shade as much. This kinda like. Makes stuff more vibrant, cause I find that the shading can make stuff look less saturated in cases. Again idk how to describe it BAHA also that’s just how I like doing my colors 👍

the whole coloring process is hard to explain that’s when I really get Hyper Focused and get into this coloring frenzy so I’m not fully conscious of how I do it /silly

ANYWAY after the colors I’ll usually do the final touches of like, coloring my lines. I’ll airbrush on some bright red and/or purple in spots and then turn the opacity down so it’s not that in your face, but it is there, so my lines aren’t just pure black. Then I’ll lay on some low opacity layers of whatever my shading colors are, like a dark purple, to tie stuff together more. Then I slap on some random noise. Love that shit. And any final final shading rendering stuff and also usually I’ll add a border around the main focus (the character(s), usually) via copying the layer that is that character, putting up a color vector thing or whatever you call it, selecting it with my selector tool, expanding the selection a bit, and then coloring it again. Hard to explain but that’s the gist. And then I’m done!!!

So. Yeah. That’s the Armageddon Art Process I guess :] /silly

design a really weird alien species... this one is always fun because you get to think about why they would have evolved certain traits, their beauty standards, how clothes and accessories would work.. its a lot of fun!!!

design a makeup look for a favourite character. pidgin doll (youtube) has some incredible designs that I really really love, draw a base with lineart of a character you like and go NUTS with whatever coloured pens/pencils/etc you have lying around. also works for digital art obviously!! create the craziest drag look, its super fun.

REDRAW MEMES. its hilarious and you don't have to think much before starting, there's no pose planning involved!! and the outcomes are always fucking fantastic

I believe most fansies have ignored hotshot for far longer than my personal liking. I would like to say that the boy is my son and i love him with all my heart and soul. I will make you consider him. So now consider hotshot who adores flowers. Let me explain.

He loves the smell of them. He loves to look at them. I always like going around saying that hotshot came from a big family with 11 older sisters. Imagine the excitement he has every year when its one of his sister’s or mom’s birthday and he gets to pick out flower bouquets to give them with personal hand written/drawn cards. Over the years, he would take note of all their favorite colors and flowers and preference on boquets. He’d always try to give his father flowers, and it’s not like he didn’t appreciate it, moreso he simply doesn’t like flowers as gifts for himself. Birthday’s however, sometimes require a long time to wait. So hotshot upped his game and tackled valentines and mother’s days and anniversaries (with their personal partners of course)

This hc is very modern au centric btw don’t mind me.

He also loves tattoos and has littered tattoos all across his body. Not to achieve a full body look, but just enough for decoration. And all his tattoos are in fact flowers. One of his favorites is his floral tattoo that wraps around his whole neck, like some sort of wrapped boquet. It was red roses, because as basic as it is he still loves them nonetheless. He kept the coloring simple within the striking black lineart, simply shaded red rose petals and green leaves with the occasional thorns. The thorns are more prominent on the back of his neck. To name a few more of his tattoos, there’s a long drawn dark purple orchid flower slightly wrapping around his right arm from just below his shoulder to his wrist. It’s a stem with multiple orchids and was given enough space between each other to leave out a lot of naked skin. There’s also another design on his stomach a bit to the side which is a knife embezzled in a bush of thorny roses. Let’s be real, as much as he is soft and gentle he’s still tough and craves violence. Then there’s also one on his upper left thigh, daisies, which can arguably be said slowly creeping up to almlst reach his waist (purposely planning out the irony of putting a flower design that symbolizes purity and innocence on his thigh lmaoo yeah i’m not getting into that i’ll let yall’s imagination run its course) His second favorite tattoo has got to be the one on his back. It’s two nearly identical tattoos on either side of the back of his shoulders. It’s a carefully designed tattoo of the Korean national flower, the mugunghwa or the rose of sharon sticking out from their individual branches. It was one of the things he does to keep himself touch with his Korean heritage, seeing that he’s the only sibling that has spent the smallest amount of time growing up in Korea. He’s got a couple more tattoos, mostly floral themed but also a few miscellaneous item designs but this is as much as i can think of rn.

Other than gifting, hotshot also loves receiving flowers. He isn’t shy about his love for flowers, but admittedly only a handful of ppl knows abt it. Bcs let’s be real, no one expects a nearly 6’6 bulky athletic gym body dude to be excited to be given flower boquets. He has been teased a couple of times by the people around him who is considered just an acquaintance (i.e. random classmate or neighbor), but with one death glare at them and they back down. That’s how scary he can be. His friends (spot, albert, and the rest of the brooklyn kids) will gift him regular boquets on the special occasions (i.e. birthdays or graduation). But ike,his beloved boyfriend, has always tries to one up himself from flower boquets. Like yeah he still gives hotshkt regular flower boquets, but if he can help it he will give him the most unique boquet. Some of hotshot’s personal favorites has got to be the hot wheels boquet, the strawberry chocolate covered boquet, the 20 dollar bill boquet, and the assorted sweets and chocolate boquets. (I’ll let yall imagine what each of these look like lolz) but at the end of the day, hotshot loves flowers. Give this man flowers. Now.

If you're a moshang fan and not already following seiraheron then what are you doing !! It's getting harder and harder to choose favorite pieces but if I had to pick the atmosphere in this is so strong and their expressions are so warm I could stare at the details for HOURS

Like every other artist on this list, every tadpole_art piece is INCREDIBLE, but this one holds a special place in my heart with how vibrant and powerful its color story is <3 also it made me cry

C's tetris sqq art is an eternally loved classic but honestly all of their gouache paintings are so magnificent and deliciously textured that I think you should stare at them all for a million hours

Unfortunately I'm not super into cosplay in general just because I don't like attracting attention HAHA but if I was I would absolutely cosplay Ning Yingying bc I think I could pull it off so well

She is also one of my blorbos, and i was so excited to make her design and share her headcanons, so all of them under the cut!

(also I completly forgot about the lines thingy, i think im 100% gona drop it lmao)

She/her. Okay, this is one that im excited to talk about. It's really common to find she/her blues in the fandom, but usually they hc her as a her because "uWU mUZt proTekct sm0l beAN Uwu" or "UWu thE d0ctor of ThE gaAnG" or "uwu SHE LIKES TO COOK" or "uWU sHE doEZN't lIKe t0 fIght" or "uWU She cRIez a L0T" and i hated that, a lot. They seemed as awful reasons to headcanon her as a she, so i never headcanoned her as a her. BUT, then i came across really cool stuff that made me reconsider, and i ended up actually liking this reasons to hc her as a her. The stuff was:

She could be a herbalist witch, and that sounds awsome.

She could be the botanic/scientist of the group, and her friendship with my red would be really cool.

i just think blue is a cool af character, with way more cool stuff than the few talked about in the fandom, and that usually the she/her hcs let out a lot of that, so i want to do it with more dept.

moving on, i think she is closest to green and red. The green one is canon, but green tends to gravitate towards tsc, and i think blue might do the same but with red.

I find her rlly creative, specially since she found a way to fight with potions and plants, but also because of her interests in cooking, and how she experiments with all the potions, trying to find out what x or y thing would do, and how it all works. Same thing with the botanic area, she is curious about how to grow them and well, she got a fucking adiction to the nether wart because of that, so yea.

She is the kind of people who would put almost anything on her mouth if it looks as if it has a cool texture/flavor

She is good at long range combat, i mean, she uses a bow.

I don't think she'd be the doctor of the gaang, maybe she'll be the one to prepare the meds, but tsc is the responsible one, so they get that title.

She and red both dislike fighting hard, and fighting in general unless it's friendly

i really think she has a lot of issues with purple, both her and green, it seems to me that blue has it more internalized than green, who expresses it a lot, but, i think blue hates purple the most.

The apron's got pockets but i fucking forgot to put lineart on them.

She also has a kind of belt for potions

the boots are for the same reason as red, and dirt is rather uncomfortable

i put a star on her face cuz it's cute xd

she cares a lot about the environment as well as red, they just focus on different aspects

when shit goes down, she is usually on red and yellow's side, while tsc and green are the other side

she cares a lot about her loved ones, and she is emotional about is, as well as red. But while red is louder and like, bouncier, about it, blue gets emotional when bad stuff happens.

the uh, blouse? shirt? under the apron it's mostly because of aesthetic honestly, i liked the sleeves and leaving them as part of the apron leaved a weird look, so now she has a shirt but no pants i guess

They all are stick figures, im so not drawing anything more than a stick figure. Not having clothes is NOT WEIRD, they use them because of aesthetic and practicity, they don't have clothes on canon, don't be weird about it please.
