BURN RITUAL Brings Gloomy Autumn Vibes to ‘Grave Watcher’

Gritty low end vibes and warm, burly guitar tone greets our senses as "Becoming The Beast" begins. It's the first track off of 'Grave Watcher' (2023) by San Antonio's BURN RITUAL. The guitar tone is fuzzy, but not too dirty or distorted, just smooth, hazy sailing along the river Styx. Subtly reverberating overhead are the clean, haunting vocals.
Multi-instrumentalist and producer Jake W. Lewis is the mastermind behind this record, which includes a synthesizer in this stoner-doom vision. We featured sounds from Burn Ritual before the pandemic with 'Blood of the Raven' (2018, Cursed Monk Records) -- review here. This is their third full-length, released November 10th, 2023 on vinyl, compact disc, and digital formats.
"Waiting For The Sun" is another effective number, and would appeal to fans of Electric Wizard, Moon Coven, and Alastor. "Embrace The Flames" conjures Saint Vitus vibes, but feels much darker (maybe it's the surreal sounds of the synth backed against some spooky stair-stepping from the bass). The insects buzzing and chirping was a good atmospheric touch to end the track on.
"Grave Watcher" continues the record's dismal ambience and the guitar tone here (and the way it's captured) felt just right to these ears. The song's main riff was going through my head long after listening. Plus it's got one of those singable choruses straight out of '70s and '80s doom.

"Black Veil" may be my favorite of the album and has something in common with Windhand in its wailing sadness and ghostly vocals echoing into the void sky. The central guitar riff and solo opt for a less bombastic tone than, say Cough, but it has a similar headbanging sway.
"Demons" is a truly nightmarish song that confronts our senses with ultra-low bellowing bass notes and voices, voices all around. There are some weird but effective vocal harmonies and the guitar tone is lusty and dank. Add in the cymbals and this one feels like trying to drive on the freeway during an evening downpour.
"When The Darkness Comes" eases us into the album's closing moments with a slow fade-in, organ tone, and a killer riff that has a certain narcotic eeriness about it. If this song doesn't accompany the dead, waking and walking, I'll be disappointed. Jake's vocal approach has a sinister character, similar to Green Lung's Tom Templar. The guitar solo was an unexpected bonus, and I was hoping it would go on a bit longer. All-in-all, a bad-ass listen for fans of the stoner-doom genre.

Like- how devoted Damian was to Tim and would follow his every word as if it was an order. Tim tells him to pluck a flower from his grave and kiss every petal that falls and Damian decides to live until Tim dies only THEN can he die (as if he was even planning to die. Tim would be so lonely, and Tim's been so lonely his whole life. Who wouldn't deny death if Tim asked? Pink perfect lips puckered out, soft sad eyes looking up at Damian with such emotions, so many emotions and none he can name properly-- "Don't die. Don't die before me, please?" And death himself would have to carry Damian down the river styx if he wants him to stay permanently dead before Tim dies)
Timothy looked so pathetic before Damian loved him and now Tim was so healthy, a soft glow to his body and a shine in his smile that was never there before Damian. It's like Timothy was made for Damian, born for Damian, all for Damian. Timothy is his thing, his object, his love, his art.
Meanwhile, Tim just... doesn't love him back. He soaks up the love and attention like a dry sponge, sucking clean and dry but Damian's attention was a river full of splashing water and it'd be so easy for Tim to lose himself in the current, lose himself in the way Damian cares. Carelessly, Tim floats in his affection, he's safe because Tim knows that Damian hates anything bad happening to his belongings. Normally people would be terrified of their kind of love. Damian, ever the 'alpha' man, will always want to command his partner, will always want to order his partner, make decisions, and Tim, pliant for love, will listen. A good doll to play with until you get bored and tired.
Tim telling Damian to jump, damian just decides how high to jump. Damian is the servant to Tim's master, and all Tim has to do is speak and Damian will follow

but still THIS!!!!😭 toxic relationships, to me, are infinitely more interesting than regular wholesome love. like it's nice occasionally but this dependence-obsession relationship that is so clearly unhealthy but WORKS for them is so fascinating to see!!!!
dynamics where if it was anyone but them it wouldn't work are so GOOD! tim is desperate enough and needy enough to cling onto this idea of "love" that damian has, this devotion that would scare or terrify anyone else but it's the only way that damian knows how to love. even though tim doesn't love him it doesn't matter. damian thinks he does and that's all that matters and besides, tim's not even really sure if he knows what real, true, selfless love IS.
he knows it's not what he has for damian because what tim feels isn't selfless. selfless love would be telling damian he doesn't feel the same, it would be admitting to him that what he feels isn't reciprocated so he shouldn't waste his time with tim and go out to find someone worthy. tim doesn't want that. tim wants to be selfish. he likes how damian wants to be around him, wants to do everything he says. he likes that. he likes being one of damian's 'things'. he knows damian won't leave him or abandon him not so long as tim continues to ride the waves of his love.
maybe it's sick and maybe people look at them with a concern or try to individually pull them aside and say 'this isn't right, this isn't what you should be doing/how you should be treating him' but all those words fall on deaf ears.
because it works for them. that's all it comes down to.

welp. shouldn’t surprise anyone but here i am, once again, opening the flood gates for interactions with all of my greek mythology muses like a clown. i will be defaulting them to a sgg’s hades verse, but i do have modern verses for them as well. please specify whomst you’d like and preferably for who!

aristaeus ( summary here ) .
hades — boon: deals with offensive attacks with wind ( bleeding from slices of air / pushback ) / able to dispel ranged attacks. keepsake: slab of honeycomb. duo: artemis, dionysus, demeter, athena, hermes. conversation: mentions of the seasons on the surface world, talk of herbology, hunting, distillery, weaving, agriculture, horticulture, etc., fun facts about those he’s related to, etc. ( he’s a chatty one ).
modern — aristaeus settles on an expanse of land to cultivate and help flourish, ever content with the doings of nature. basically, a farmer.
charon ( summary here ) .
hades — ‘charon is the boatman of the river styx, responsible for ferrying deceased souls across the river and into the underworld. in greek mythology, he required a single obol - placed into the mouth before burial - as payment for his services, or else the soul in question would be left to wander the banks of the styx for a hundred years.’
modern — in modern times, it’s rumored that he extended / changed modes of transportation. from the river of styx to the street of the surface world – charon now guides the newly deceased in a taxicab. bonus: instead of an oar, charon’ preferred weapon is the detachable steering wheel of his vehicle.
circe .
hades — boons: deals with the transmutation of enemies into swine or offers a temporary animal companion ( lion or wolf depending on stage ). keepsake: satchel of mandrake, peony, snowdrop, yarrow, poppy, and rue. duo: hermes. conversation: mentions of her distaste of athena, musings of old heros ( odysseus, daedalus, patroclus, achilles, etc. ), fleeting recognition of hermes, understanding of zagreus’ attempts to escape.
modern — tba but along the lines of the rumored ‘witch of the woods’ vibes.
daedalus ( summary here ) .
hades — ‘a master artisan who, upon his death, was hand-selected by hades to design the house of hades and the various rooms of tartarus in exchange for a place in elysium. every time one of his tasks are finished he discards his current tools, which zagreus may find to alter their infernal arms for the duration of a run.’
modern — a niche was found within architecture, art, and invention. it sapped away just about all his time from dawn to dusk as there was always something else to create or advance. for better or for worse, where or what his creations were used for was out of his hands. aka, modern architecture man.
orpheus .
hades — ‘orpheus is a legendary musician. during his life, he lost his wife and muse eurydice and ventured to the underworld to plea for her return. although he was ultimately unable to bring her back to life, he charmed hades with his music such that after his death, hades employed orpheus as his court musician.’
modern — singer / songwriter, there’s an unmistakable sadness this talented musician carries.
patroclus ( summary here ) .
hades — kept in elysian fields, patroclus spends his eternal days speaking to the polished pots, lush greens, and babbling river of lethe.
modern / crime — ex-military and riddled with past trauma, patroclus falls into the line of crime ( more in summary ).
modern — still ex-military and riddled with past trauma, patroclus never fell into the line of crime. instead, he cashed in all of his efforts to adapt to society, fought tooth and nail to reap the progress he's now achieved as a well liked physical therapist for amputees.
phobetor ( summary here ) .
hades — boon: deals with paralyzing or driving away enemies as zagreus embodies their worst fear for a few seconds. keepsake: scales of a serpent. duo: none. conversation: mentions of hypnos, nyx, chaos & other primordial gods / what the speaker fears the most.
modern — known under a different alias within the art world, phobetor oftentimes illustrates those from his visits. the shapes he had once taken, potency of how tumultuous the experience was – all shaped by masterful hands. The extent of his projects have ranged from galleries to book covers to albums and more.

I am flattered you based Demon!Sundown from jel's Akio and my Triads of the Damned. Since Free Bird is a Twin, I guess Queen and River Styx perhaps when Successors snag em. In turn, The Eagle is snatched by Atgas for being "an inferior copy" maybe. Thanks for the OC fun facts meme!
Well now that you mention it, what with The Free Bird's trial being "Trial of Rhythm", I think a bonus boss/Minigame against a corrupted Eagle & demon backup would make sense. Perhaps a trick is you can only use each attack only once... And...

Genshin Impact x Hades Crossover
TBD with Murata and the Tsaritsa, but I thought it's far enough along to at least make a start on this.
Traveler (either Kong or Ying by choice) as protag, going through the stages to get answers about their sibling.
Decided to combine or split the character roles.
House of Hades/Mondstadt: Starting area, get teleported back every time you 'die' in a run. Shops, currency exchange, quest bulletin board, get your own house? to decorate and show off collections and accomplishments. Should be very pretty. Maybe a fake sky?
Characters in this area:
Xiao and Ganyu as Thanatos and Hypnos, generally hang around and offer gossip (or ". . ." I suppose in Xiao's case). Both occasionally show up in your runs to offer help, Xiao offers you a challenge the same as Thanatos, Ganyu offers a complete heal. Each can only appear once per run, although they may not appear at all.
Katheryne as Hades, hanging around always doing paperwork. She makes commentary on your run, like Hypnos except much more obviously sarcastic. She also gives out challenges/bounties and you can purchase decorative upgrades from her. (I originally was going to put Jean here, for the paperwork, but Katheryne seems to make more sense.)
Noelle as Dusa, mostly just commentary and can increase relationship values here.
Diluc as Achilles, offers combat advice as you try out new weapons and boons. Maybe also offers to spar with you for practice? Unlike Skelly, he fights back though.
Dori as the Wretched Broker, exchanging artifacts for currency or vice-versa. She also takes the place of Charon during the runs, offering items, boons and artifacts in return for currency, either in person or at shops. Maybe an extra boss if you steal from her, but not THE bonus boss.
Skirk as Nyx, more commentary, maybe the one who advances the plot?

Tartarus/Liyue: First hostile area, shown mostly underground, as opposed to Mondstadt. Mostly dark with gold accents, very luxurious looking (as opposed to Tartarus appearance of a prison).
Dainsleif is the merchant in this area, implied to be sneaking around for unknown reasons and should drop hints in conversation on how to advance the plot.
The boss for this area is an Abyss Lector, either one or a combination of Enjou, Egill and Agnarr. Enjou would be the only one who really talks and is friendly to the Traveler. None of them show up in Mondstadt.

Asphodel/Fontaine?: Definitely full of rivers, maybe frozen over. Elegant in appearance, lots of fountains.
The merchant is Faruzan. She's in a comfortable, luxurious palace with lots of resources, but implied to be stuck only in the palace and ironically without the items/artifacts she needs to get out. While normal items can be purchased with the regular currency, advancing the relationship with her would involve bringing her artifacts so she can build something that would allow her to escape.
The boss for the area would be the All-Devouring Narwhal.

Elysium/Sumeru: Rooms should alternate between jungle and desert decorations. (I really wanted to do Mondstadt here instead, but I decided it worked better as the starting area.)
Kaeya is the merchant in the area. He's a lot more snarky than Patroclus but maybe some hints of depression still. Advancing both his and Diluc's friendship points means helping them rebuild their relationship, usually by passing messages back and forth to each other. (Personally, I'd like the idea that you can make choices to tilt the relationship to be either romantic or familial, but we know that developers would never go for it.)
La Signora and Childe are the bosses, with La Signora being the Theseus expy and Childe as Asterius. NB: while La Signora shows both Pyro and Cryo abilities and Childe Electro and Hydro, they can only summon the Tsaritsa for an aid attack. Maybe stick a relationship path with Childe, maybe advancing by doing certain challenges?

Temple of Styx/Greece: Not sure what to put here. It would either be Khain'rieh or Celestia, neither of which have been seen yet.
Cerberus would be Durin, except instead of finding a Fetid Sack, you'd pick up a Mondstadt souvenir instead.
The final boss is the Traveler's sibling. Each time you defeat him or her you get a chance to ask one of three questions. But not all questions advance the plot and if you choose the wrong one, well you just have to go again. Not sure what causes the Traveler to return to the beginning each time.

His return to the house starts as it always does. Phantom pain from the blow to the head that killed him echoed as he shook the blood like water from his hair. Shaking his head like that probably wasn't the brightest idea, but it was the fastest way to get the water off him. It also served to startle Hypnos awake, an added bonus.
The god of sleep brought a pleasant enthusiasm to the house. A bright flicker in the cold loneliness of the House. It was something Zagreus gravitated to, or so he liked to believe. It certainly wasn't because Hypnos was the only stalling point between he and Achilles. It was twenty-one steps from the water's edge to Hypnos.
"So a Lout got you again huh?" Hypnos clicked his tongue in amusement, "Have you considered running them into a wall?"
"I have not." He lied. Hypnos enjoyed giving advice, and Zag wasn't going to be the one to tell him it was largely useless, not when it seemed to make the god happy that he was helping.
"Better luck next time." He chirped before beginning to doze off again.
Fifteen steps were between him and Achilles, and each time he wound up back at the house they were the longest fifteen steps he had ever taken.
He took a breath and composed himself as best he could. This used to be the part of dying he looked forward to the most. Telling Achilles of the things he had seen, what he'd been able to do. Now, it was an echo of old habits, something Zagreus didn't have the strength to change. They would both suffer less if Zag could gather the strength to walk the fifty steps past his father's desk to his own room.
But Achilles, for all the pain their closeness caused, was the closest thing to rest Zagreus had ever come by. A moment of reprieve between being a disappointment and lord of something he had never known, and fighting for his right to be near his mother.
Because in that moment, although it was painful to them both, they could pretend things were the same as before. That Achilles heart wasn't painfully out of reach, and that Zagreus's wasn't broken by the fact.
Thirty-six steps from the River Styx to Achilles, and this was the first day, or night, Zagreus didn't take them. He looked at Achilles from where he stood beside Hypnos, and then turned for his room.
Those turned out to be the most painful steps he had taken in his life.

My take on Ch6 part 2
I wasn’t that much active on my account when the part 1 came on August but now I just want to do some posts about it because this chapter is lit. Like straight up hell fire at this point 🔥
Well there will be spoilers after the cut since I’ll be talking about some scenes and things I really liked. Now let’s go
Man, I haven’t been this excited over the plot of a twst chapter since Octavinelle’s (I’d come to conclusion that’s my fave among all... but will Ignihyde take their place in the future? I legit don’t know).
The lore behind Idia’s family and STYX itself have a pretty good amount of content in the time being and I certainly want to know much more. Especially Idia’s parents being like “due to unknown reasons, let’s left the control of a powerful organization in our son’s hands since we’ll be testing his friends”~ (well, Idia kinda stopped the staff from killing Rook, Epel and Yuu so... ok, weird parents, you have this one)
Also, in the beginning, Idia just assuming some sort of posture and saying “Did you forgot who I am? I am the boss here” like the god of the underworld he could be... I felt like that one vine where’s the guy sees a girl smoking while standing and goes “... wow” THAT’S ME RN
I love those parts in story where I can’t even choose a side because everyone is being so amazing (and I hate when it this happens but, like, everyone is shitty instead). I mean, STYX having a powerpoint and a special documentary was sending me and when I thought it wasn’t enough, the boys just spent one hour reading every word of the contract (half bc it’s a important document, half just to spite Idia to death) and I love it
Jack making a little appearance was also great! I love my wolf boy~ and he said good and motivational things to Epel just so he wouldn’t be so sad for all that happened and that’s a good friendship right here. I love their dynamic, so cute
Epel and Rook’s scenes are awesome on their own. I’m loving every minute of screen time they’re getting, from Epel slipping to his country accent and angrily yelling “ROOOOOK-SAAAN” in the middle of the sky to Rook saluting STYX drone with a “BONJOUUR Je souis LE CHASSER DE L’AMOUR” (and Ortho imitating him OMG- )
My two Pomefiore boys are so loud. Like, such a iconic duo
The simulation tests were also interesting. They split the five overblot boys between “the female villains” (Queen of Hearts, Ursula and Evil Queen) and “the male villains” (Scar, Jafar) and they reacted to the test very differently. Props to Leona for recognizing the sim the minute fake!Ruggie stepped on and Jamil kinda followed along
Idia and Ortho lowkey planning a whole game based on the test results (bruh). And little angst time when Idia said the others will pass by the Lethe River to forget everything so it’s not worth to starting any relationship with them anyway... like, wow, that’s such a sad way of thinking. Can’t wait to see who hurt my flame boys... it may explain a lot
And the Isle’s entrance where Epel, Rook and Yuu are right now kinda of reminded me of that one city Hercules saved from Hydra (... Themis? shit I don’t remember). The scenery is beautiful, simply beautiful. The Greek myths references, the tech aesthetic, Idia’s clothes that make him look like a Imperial officer from Star Wars...
It’s funny to say it right now after some Ignihyde content but Idia is not my number one favorite (it’s actually Jack but I didn’t thought of doing anything special for his birthday at the time, certainly I will do next year!) but Idia is one of my favorites. I was thinking about doing a post about it someday...
Well, the point is: I’m loving Ignihyde’s chapter so far, the plot is getting very interesting even though the movie’s references aren’t being exactly easy to locate (just like the other chapters tho). Just give me more Epel and Idia content to fangirl about it.
I don’t know if Ace and Deuce will wake up in time to join Jack in the rescue squad 2 (idk even if they can) but it would be a good bonus.

The Most Powerful Demigod...
is not Percy Jackson (in my opinion)
But you know what Percy Jackson is? The most accomplished demigod. There hasn’t been a demigod in a long while that has accomplished just about everything that he has. Now, some people just translate this into automatic most powerful demigod. I disagree.
Let’s think of Percy’s powers. First, he has the powers to breathe underwater, communicate with sea creatures and horse-like creatures, water manipulate (hydrokinesis), make storms/hurricanes, and help other people breathe underwater. These are some pretty impressive powers, and it’s speculated by many that he can blood bend. No wonder the gods wanted Percy to become a god.
Now, these are all of his big/main accomplishments. He slashed a furry and slayed a Minotaur with zero training, surveyed a jump and monster fight on the arch, and killed Medusa and beat Ares in a fight with minimal training. These are his FIRST YEAR accomplishments. In Sea of Monsters, he defeated a Colchis bull, he escapes Circe’s island, he escaped Polyphemus with the Golden Fleece, and outsmarted Luke. Percy slays the Nemean Lion, and holds the weight of the world. In Battle of the Labyrinth, he kills Geryon and escapes his ranch, he blows up Mount St. Helens and releases Typhon, and helps defeat an army that marched on CHB. He slows down Kronos’s army, bathes in the River Styx, escapes Hades’s palace(and fights and army), leads the Battle of Manhattan, blows up a bridge, makes mini hurricanes, fights Kronos’s army, and is offered godhood. THAT’S JUST IN THE FIRST SERIES. He then goes on and defeats a giant or two, survive Tartarus, and slay some more giants. The list goes on forever, but that’s not the point.
HE HAD HELP. Okay, there’s nothing wrong with having help, but we’re looking at the MOST POWERFUL demigod, not a powerful group of demigods. Of course, his powers he can do by himself so, those are bonus points. Also, fighting and beating all these monsters do give him plenty of points as well. But, let’s rule out which fights he didn’t have help with, and that he pretty much did by himself. I’ll count the furry, Minotaur (2), Ares, weight of the world, kills Geryon, blows up Mount St. Helens, bathes in the Styx, and defeats Hades army. Now, I’m not gonna lie, that’s a lot. He’s done that (and more) by himself. Teamwork makes the dreamwork, but that’s impressive.
Let me get this point across, I KNOW PERCY IS A POWERFUL DEMIGOD. HE’S A CHILD OF THE BIG THREE, AND HAS MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS, POWERS, AND FIGHTING SKILLS. But I don’t think having a lot of accomplishments makes you the best. I know that sounds weird. Like isn’t someone with the most awards typically the best. Yes and no. Think about track meets. You don’t have to be the best and win the race to get a ribbon. You just have to be in GROUP of the best to get a ribbon. Percy is someone who gets like second or third place in a track race. He’s still good enough, but he’s not the MOST/BEST.
All I did was praise Percy this post, but just wait until the real battle begins:) That’s when you’ll see some real competition.
