Ripley Holden is my perfect Northern male fantasy character. Sure, DT is the reason I re-watched it just now, almost 20 years after the first time, and hot damn I’d want him to sweep me off my feet too, and I definitely paid more attention to him this time round. But I realised it was Ripley that has given me my penchant for intimidating Northern characters, which David Morrissey plays so well.
Anyway, what an absolute quality programme from start to finish. Had to keep a note of that for myself.

Unaired pilot. Only 40 minutes. Show wasn't picked up, but it is very good. He decides instead to coach people who want to represent themselves. Lots of DT in very tight suits. American accent. Not MAJOR angst but he does has daddy issues and a panic disorder, so.

Romance, kissing, light hearted, minimal angst. David in a funny outfit. Fake dating trope?

Sequel to Nativity, but you don't need to watch the first one. Primary school teacher Donald Peterson (DT) is forced to take his class to Wales to participate in A Song For Christmas, a festive singing competition. Here he is put against his twin brother, who is a successful composer and with whom he has a strained relationship. Light angst - lots of daddy issues, but generally sweet.

- What We Did On Our Holiday (DOUG MCLEOD)
A family go to Scotland for their grandfather's 70th birthday. Doug (DT) and his wife (Rosamund Pike) are getting a divorce, but are hiding it from the rest of the family. Movie is mostly focused on the kids and their grandad, but David has a few moments, and he's generally present throughout. Funny, slightly shocking at times, family film. No major angst. Character death.

Shakespeare's Richard II. David plays the titular character, the extravagant, heartless and cold King of England, Richard II. He is sick and hiding it. Injury, dizziness, panic attacks, that sort of thing - as well as a heart attack. He has a lot of trauma and daddy issues. Season three touches on topics of rape (warning).

Biopic about RD Liang, a Scottish psychiatrist. Sex, misogyny, mental health topics, some self-harm (done by another character)

There's a scene where Phileas gets flogged (whipped, essentially) quite violently, and it's somewhat graphic. Touches on themes of racism. Phileas is 100% neurodivergent.

los angeles. there was nothing more axel hated that have been born and spend the first years of his life in this place. the kind of place where everyone's got their own script, their own lines rehearsed to perfection. yet, behind the glittering lights and palm trees he found nothing but emptiness, like a soundstage after the cameras stopped rolling. his abhorrence for it burned fiercely within him, especially considering he hailed from the part he despised the most: the affluent enclave.
thankfully, it only lasted ten years. michigan felt like a much better fit for axel. while not perfect, it offered a sense of space where he could disappear for days without bumping into anyone—a habit his parents despised since he often used it as an excuse to escape. but for axel, those moments brought a temporary peace, easing his aversion to so many other things.
axel's teenage years are a sore spot for his parents. a staunch rebel, he defied the constraints imposed by his family's wealth and status. despite being a bright student, he disregarded authority and boundaries at school, landing himself in the vice principal's office for truancy often. unlike typical truants, axel wasn't out indulging in vices; instead, he spent his days in the library reading or dozing off. while his behavior nearly led to expulsion on multiple occasions, daddy's money always managed to secure his place in school.
despite his introverted nature, axel had a natural charm that endeared him to others. he remained puzzled by this, but people were consistently drawn to him, leading to his popularity in high school. this popularity often clashed with his preference for solitude. while his twin brother reveled in hosting weekend parties, axel preferred retreating to his room to play drums or bury himself in a good book.
axel wasn't exactly the life of the party, but when he decided to join in, he had a way of turning the gathering into something memorable.
after graduating, axel found himself torn between the universities that had accepted him. ultimately, he chose to stay in michigan, pursuing a major in comparative literature and a minor in linguistics. however, a year before completing his degree, he quietly left without offering much explanation. he vaguely informed his parents that he intended to embark on a backpacking journey around the world, disappearing from most people's lives for two years. recently returning, he resumed his studies at the university but found himself adrift. that's why, despite the volatile nature of his relationship with aaron, he agreed to join him at his lake house.
growing up with ace as his twin was a mixed bag for axel. on one hand, having a built-in best friend and partner in crime was a source of comfort and joy. yet, ace's deep understanding of him also made axel feel exposed and vulnerable at times. their brotherly relationship was tumultuous, marked by highs of friendship and lows of conflict. currently, their bond was strained due to axel's unexplained departure. oftentimes, axel feels stuck in a perpetual tug-of-war between individuality and unity, never quite sure which side he belonged to.

vuelvo a casa
Desde mi cuarto de Barcelona, cuando no puedo dormir, puedo escuchar las campanadas de la iglesia de la Bonanova. Son las 2 de la mañana, llevo horas en la cama intentando conciliar el sueño y me parece que acabo de escucharlas aquí, en Londres. Sí, las de la Bonanova. Creo que esto ya se acaba.
Hoy mi mesita de noche vuelve a ser el pilón de libros y revistas que cumplían esa misma función hace 4 años, cuando dormí aquí por primera vez. Es curioso como las cosas suelen acabar justo donde empezaron.
Esta mañana he puesto un anuncio online y a la media hora a aparecido un hindi en mi puerta con 25£ en efectivo a cambio de la mesita de noche de bambú que compré con la cuenta de Amazon de mi madre (la cual he usado sin parar durante estos años) a los pocos meses de mudarme aquí. Y menuda bronca cuando se enteró (solo por el extracto de la cuenta). Me dijo que era una tontería ir acumulando bultos y gastando tontamente en cosas de las que me iba a acabar teniendo que deshacer, que serian una carga cuando me fuese. Acabó pareciéndole monísima, hasta le ha dado pena cuando se lo he dicho.
Y aunque ahora el pilón cuenta con bastantes incorporaciones a la plantilla, me hace gracia pensar que esos primeros libros que me traje al principio -de las pocas cosas que consideré indispensables en una maleta con un único billete de ida-, no han cambiado, siguen estando ahí, exactamente igual, intactos. Yo he cambiado. Sin duda. Pero supongo que sigo siendo Holden Caulfield, al menos una vez al año. También tengo algo de Tom Ripley y de todas las excéntricas mujeres misóginas de Highsmith, soy un poco Lolita a veces (y puede que un poco Humbert otras) y aunque muchas veces sigo sintiendo que estoy dentro de una campana de cristal, ahora ya no tanto. Creo que ya estoy preparada para volver.
