Randomish question but are the servants in the Heth Macoll arena also slaves or did they actively seek employment there? This is a question that’s been bugging me haha
It depends on who you're referring to: it's a mix! Certain people are also there as slaves against their own will; some people are technically enslaved but on the "side" of the arena-masters/captors in that they prefer life as gladiators and would snitch on other gladiators working for rebellion in exchange for personal privileges and freedoms; and some are part of the arena "establishment" willingly and are being paid to be there and help keep it running! Hope that makes sense!

okay like. i didn't know what to pick for the director's cut ask game because skdjbfkjdbgf i wanted smth from penumbra but combing through a nearly 400k fic is to pick 500 words is impossible. so idk i kind of picked a hurt/comfort scene at random (or randomish--i do love hospital scenes hehe) ---
Suddenly a flurry of emotions flooded his eyes. He was looking at her more frantically now as he tentatively caressed her cheek and then lightly ran his hand over her arm. She patiently let him check her over again and again, giving him time to reassure himself that her own injuries were really gone. While she wished he would have more concern for himself after everything he’d gone through, a loving warmth still bloomed in her chest at the affectionate and careful touches he was giving her. When he finally settled on leaving his hand cupping her cheek, she leaned into the nervous touch. She’d missed these small loving gestures from him so much, the feel of his fingertips brushing her skin as though she was the most precious thing. He was looking at her again with so many emotions and thoughts flickering through his eyes.
“Marinette…”
His lip trembled as he was unable to say anything more than her name, but for her that was enough. His eyes became downcast as he struggled with all that had to be going through his mind. She knew she couldn’t even begin to understand all that he was going through and all that he would continue to face from here on, but she was going to stay with him nonetheless.
“I’m okay.” she said softly, “You need to focus on yourself right now. Speaking of, you should really be lying down. You need to rest.”
She felt the tremor that went through him as he answered, “N-No, I...I don’t want to sleep…Please don’t let them make me sleep...”
Marinette observed him for a moment. He was still frightened, his anxiety still eating away at him as he tried to find some reprieve in her embrace. But he was a lot more subdued than the panic he had awoken in.
“It’s okay, they won’t do that as long as you’re not doing anything that’s going to make your injuries worse.” she told him gently, “You just need to try and stay calm, alright? And if you feel yourself panicking then just let me know. Can you do that for me?”
Marinette remained steady as Adrien started to lean on her more heavily. He pressed himself into her as though she were the shelter he needed against some invisible storm. He gave a faint nod, letting her know that he’d understood what she’d asked of him.
His words passed as a quiet whimper from his lips, “Don’t leave me alone. ”
Marinette tenderly brushed his blond hair back from his face, placing a gentle kiss on his forehead as she wrapped both of her arms around him.
“I’m not going anywhere.” she assured, “I promise.”
[Ask Game]
I should write more hospital scenes just for you 🥰
So this is an incredibly raw and emotionally charged scene towards the end of Penumbra. These kids have just gone through hell for each other and they both blame themselves for it. They've learned though, and this is their true starting point for healing - especially for Adrien.
Adrien has taken so much damage at the hands of others - from people who claimed to care for him - that he is absolutely mortified at the thought of hurting Marinette. And he did hurt her. Even if he wasn't in the best state of mind or in control of himself, he still caused her harm.
He is terrified in this moment - of what he's done and what can still happen. He's already made the devastating choice of letting go of his mother and separating himself from his father. But he could still loose Marinette.
Marinette is challenging that fear though. She stays with him and is patient, giving him all the time to reassure himself that she really is there. She's learned to let him lead in these fragile and vulnerable moments because he needs someone to go at his pace. While hse can't fully understand his trauma, she can be understanding and compassionate towards him. She loves him so deeply and shows this in the smallest of ways - by just being close by and listening to his words and paying attention to his cues - but these ways have the deepest meaning for Adrien.
Even in his terrified, broken, vulnerable state, he loves and trusts Marinette enough to let himself just be that. So much so, that he is able to vocally express to her "Don't leave me alone" - something that he has struggled again and again to express because of the abuse and trauma he's lived through.
And Marinette meets his fear with love. She's continually met every side of him with love. She is set on loving him openly and freely, just as he has done for her.
Because loving each other is also loving the broken and messy parts while also helping each other become the best version of themselves.

A little bummed to realize the fun zoo idea I had on Spectacle Island won't really work because everything in the settlement spawns at a randomish point when you leave and come back. Unfortunate. It's still a fun idea, though.

For some lighter personal news, with some randomish images as touchpoints…
My sister had the first baby of our generation a few weeks ago! It was harrowing and wonderful to be there, and I hated having to leave. 7.5 hours is too far for proper auntie involvement!
Just before that in February, I got to go to a national professional conference and used the occasion as permission to buy some cool dresses, pictured here from yesterday styled for breakfast, aka with an apron to keep food off of it.
All the good and scary things have been a lot, so the k-drama I’m watching probably wouldn’t be as intense if I wasn’t a bit extra vulnerable….
But also, while some of the character interiority makes no sense to me in Little Women, the ferocity of love and protectiveness from the older sisters toward their youngest feels so real to me. Now I feel that way as an aunt, too. It’s so scary to care this much about people, and realize it’s all out of your control. Life is wild.

@gluttonous-hoards Okay. Then please consider, for a moment, what the game would be like if it had to render all of that mostly empty space. Where are all the NPCs going to be put for you to interact with? How would they even be able to make sure that everything renders properly? Sure, No Man's Sky did space travel, but it was at the cost of so many of the planets being empty wastes of data and space, that everyone got bored of the game so quickly and started slamming it Sure it sucks not being able to travel between planets, but I'd rather have stuff to be able to interact with on the planet in question, than not.
I'm gonna use later versions of No Man's Sky as an example of how to handle both of these actually. Because I think they actually did a pretty good job. No Man's Sky DOES render all the empty space, and DOES have NPC interactions generated, and DOES put things in space.
Space is rendered, and because the size of space is Fucktacular, they have a speed-boost system on the ships to make it between the planets of a star system, and eventually between stars themselves. Travel between stars is instantaneous, but boosted travel between planets is not, meaning there are opportunities for random encounters, secret explorable areas, asteroid fields to mine materials, and after a certain point your own fleet of trade ships can park and be explored.
No Man's Sky has interactions on both levels of play. Space/air, and land. I am not going to claim they're necessarily FANTASTIC interactions, because that would be disingenuous. But I feel that way about a lot of stuff in Skyrim, too, because that game has also always been janky as hell even with the randomish events being more scripted. Bethesda is not a stranger to making a janky game system with well-presented content, and the complete lack of even an attempt to have playable interplanetary travel in a SPACE GAME is baffling.
An indie team spent at least 3 years doing all of this, even if the actual content wasn't any good at first, and had it available at launch. Bethesda's been building Starfield for at least 5 years with way more resources from selling and reselling Skyrim and can't say the same.

so one of the new techniques i wanna try is this thing this guy Dan Tirels does with transfer paper. he coats the transfer paper with paint and then lightly and/or firmly presses it on the canvas to make randomish shapes, like so:
Tumblr media
and he does it with multiple colors and also uses a wet sponge to blend and blur the colors:
Tumblr media
he also does some other stuff in the video and this photo is not his finished art, but i'm not really interested in the other techniques for now. i'm gonna try to mess around with tracing paper and sponges this week and see what happens
here's the video the stills are from: https://youtu.be/Bt6ElMHzj_0

for the book ask: 3, 12, 16
Thanks Chloe!!!!! 🥰
3. What were your top five books of the year?
sorting the books I've read by rating and this is a randomish selection of anything that got ranked a 4 to 5 out of 5... so they r just books I enjoyed, not necessarily books i got the most out of, if that makes sense? some books i don't love reading but they stick... these i all enjoyed reading a lot not necessarily the "best books"
contact by Carl Sagan (see last ask.... It SLAPPED!!!)
the sparrow by Mary doria Russell (sorry rhu look away. i found it interesting...)
the color purple by Alice walker (my friend described this as quick to read but one that sticks with u for a long time...grows like a seed etc... i do not disagree)
the anthropocene reviewed by john green (ok sorry to everyone who still sort of thinks john green is cringe but my roomies were right when they loved this collection i think like. Good emotional kick and The balance bw observation and emotion and personal reflection rlly worked for me and it's sort of a genre I like anyway a la rebecca solnit etc. Also I enjoy essays)
in the dream house by carmen maria machado (books that you feel consumed by while you read... also included some familiar settings. i generally dislike second person at all but this book overall worked well i think. also her short story the husband stitch is uh. yeah. Stomach turning?)
12. Any books that disappointed you?
Not a massive disappointment since my expectations weren't sky-high but No Country for Old Men by Cormac Mccarthy was deeply underwhelming. I dislike his "Westerns" in general, but that opinion wasn't cemented til I read this. I do like the cadence of how he writes and some of the descriptions but overall it really frustrated me. I read much better novels about violence and about the idea of the "West" or the southwest this year alone. Idk. Just was the worst of Mccarthy to me - misogyny, centrality of an American myth, bleak violence, criminality. Whatever.
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
I've ranted about this like ten million times but Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir is the worst book I've read in several years. It's rare I hate reading a book like I did with that one.
