TRICK OR TREAT!!
!!!!!!!! MY FIRST TRICK OR TREATER!!!! HELLO!!!! :D
Tumblr media
This is 약과(Yakgwa), a traditional Korean snack!
약(yak) means 'medicine', and 과(gwa) means 'biscuit' or 'snack'. So the name Yakgwa means "medicinal snack". This is because Yakgwa needs a lot of honey and oil to make, which were rare & even considered to be medicine back in the days.
To make it, you sift flour with a sieve and add a little salt and pepper, sesame oil/perilla oil, ginger juice, honey, and a bit of alcohol to make the dough. (The alcohol disappears after you cook it, of course.) Then you oil the Yakgwa Board(the stamp for the flower design), fill the prints with dough, poke some holes in it, and fry it! After that, you leave it to steep in 조청(jo-chung, grain syrup). This takes a while, but the end result is worth it. :)
I'm not quite sure how to describe the flavor, but I'd say Yakgwa kind of tastes like churros?? Churros, but instead of crunchy it's soft and slightly sticky, like the churros is steeped in honey.
....
(I have no idea how to wrap this post up.)
WELP, THAT'S YAKGWA!!!! 😀
Haha😅, happy Halloween!!!! 🎃💖🎃💖🎃💖🎃💖

TRICK OR TREAT!!!
Ghost! Here here, have one of my absolute favorite cookies!
Tumblr media
Polvorones, specifically these tri colored ones, were an absolute staple growing up. Whenever my mom would take me to the panaderia (a Mexican bakery), we always had to get these among some other classics. Years later, me and my brother still fight over who gets the sugary cookie 'cause my mom always forgets to bring extra

This is my dog Blade (Named after Technoblade, yes<3) and he was my best friend. He recently came to visit us from the afterlife and played with his siblings at home, had his favorite meal and made us company for a day. Let me tell you about día de los muertos or day of the death.
TLDR: One of many versions of the myth of day of the death, what it often means and why it's cool.
ALSO! I'm (unfortunately) not a historian. I just got mexica/aztec history, mythology and cosmovision as special interests of mine since my senior year or highschool so most of my knowledge is for classes, asking my teachers, studying for exams and researching on my own. There's a lot of myths and legends about this beautiful tradition and this is just the one I know, so if you're interested, please feel free to be curious and do the same!
Back when the Aztecs were the biggest empire in America, whenever a person died by natural causes, it was said their souls were going to travel to the Mictlán (Nahuatl for place of the death), which is similar to hell but not as such as Hell, since Mictlán is the death new home, rather than a punishment. And it too has 9 different levels with 9 different tests by the god mictlantecuhtli and his wife mictecacíhuatl (god and goddess of the place of the death, respectively) for the souls to reach eternal rest.
(This is the place where most people would go, but there's, if I remember correctly, around 3, maybe 4 afterlife places souls would go, but that's a ramble for another time.)
The very entrance of the Mictlán is a river that souls need to cross in order to get in. Here, xoloitzcuintles (xolotl means monster/weird thing and itzcuintle means dog, so literally translating it means weird dog or dog monster. As a fun fact, axolotl literally translates to water monster since it has -xolotl) would help them to get across, but only and ONLY IF souls, when alive, were kind to animals. Thus Aztecas having xoloitzcuintles as lower deities.
But the 9 trials were tough, and mictlantecuhtli didn't know what to do to motivate souls to get through all of them. So then he allowed for them to go back to the world two days a year. November 1st is the day for the children to go visit their parents and siblings. November 2nd is the adult's turn to go visit their families. Aztecs were pleased by this and started making their favorite dishes to help them recharge<3
Apparently, it was the people around 2019 who decided that it was pets' turn to come and visit us October 27th, and we all embraced it. A lot of people's first experience with grief was with pets, and I think they deserve the same treatment. Like with humans, a candle is lit to light their way home along with cempasuchil flowers to trace their path. They're all welcomed with their favorite meals, water, and in some cases toys or their favorite things when they were alive.
As a kid I never had a reason to celebrate día de muertos, but now I do. And rather than that being sad, I took the opportunities to reflect about life, death, afterlife and memories. As long as we remember them, they won't ever die. They'll always live with us, in our hearts and the happy memories we shared with them. Grief is the price to pay for loving in life, and I think every second of pain I've ever experienced, was worth the smiles my loved ones drew in my face when they could.
I encourage anyone of any nationality who feels curiosity to research and put together an ofrenda, share memories about your loved ones and remember how happy you were. Tysm for reading<3

Happy Halloween!
I'm going to be putting an aero bar in your bag, and one of the mint ones cause I like them.
Tumblr media
They're made with milk chocolate, and lots of bubbles whipped into the chocolate, and you can just sort of let them rest on your tongue and feel all the bubbles pop as they melt. A candy with patience.

Welcome! Happy Halloween! I'm going to take advantage of the fact that this is digital and I can give out HOMEMADE TREATS and here, have a butter tart.
Tumblr media
Canadian treat, they're mostly made with butter and sugar, and they can have inclusions of pecans (basically a mini pecan pie) or raisins (contentious) but they are also good with just carmely sugar goop. You can make them with maple sugar/maple syrup or just brown sugar, and they are GREAT study food if you buy a 12-pack of them at the grocery store for when it starts to get dark and grim outside (so like now).

곶감(pronounced got-gam, dried persimmon)!!
곶감 is a traditional snack, and it's most notably used for 제사(jesa). 제사 is a ritual for honoring ancestors, usually done on the day of the ancestor's passing or on 추석(Chuseok, basically Korean Thanksgiving).
To make 곶감, we peel unripe persimmons and hang them up to dry. After they're about one-thirds dry, we put them in a sealed box for the rest of their drying. The white powder you see in the picture above is glucose/fructose, it forms naturally during the process!
Since persimmons are harvested in autumn, 곶감 has been a popular winter snack for ages. Especially since, in folklore, 곶감 was believed to ward off tigers! (Apparently, tigers actually do hate 곶감, since dry food isn't fresh, and therefore perceived as bad. Plus, tigers can't taste sweetness, so to tigers, 곶감 is just extremely old fruit.)
곶감 tastes like, well, dried persimmons! The powder on the outside kind of feels like a sugar coating, so there's that too. It's very sweet, and it's healthy as well, since 곶감 doesn't really need any sort of processing except drying.
Happy Halloween🎃👻💕 Here are a few Korean songs I like, as a lil extra!

Hiii :D For you I have the prickly pear cactus, also known as tunas where I'm from
Tumblr media
I honestly have no idea if you can find these in the US, the only reason my family is able to get them is because we live in a border city, and my mom's old coworker is willing to travel to get them for us (my family is too afraid to travel because said bordering city is extremely dangerous)
The flavor is sweet, but also kinda bland, similar to that of a melon. It's one of my favorite fruits, but I don't get to eat it much due to it not being readily available in the US
