Everyone say thank you Russell T Davies for introducing the wider television watching British public to rimming in 1999 and then heavily implying bisexuality is a natural evolution of current human sexuality in 2005 and then making a show where the entire main cast kisses someone of the same gender in 2006. Doing it like no other

Hello! I was casually scrolling through your blog and saw your answer about your favorite and least favorite things about the characters and now I have a question. What are your favorite things about Gale and Randy? I’m only asking favorite since i feel like the only least favorite thing about those two is how we only get a proof of life from them every few years.
Hello dear sweet anon!
Thank you for your question, I’m not sure I’m the very best person in this fandom to answer it because I know relatively little about Gale and Randy compared with some folks. But, of course, even given my limited knowledge, I do know some things! First and foremost, I actually do love that we know relatively little about them. They are each incredible actors and I am so grateful they brought Justin and Brian alive for us. Would QAF continue to have the hold it does on us if it hadn’t been for Gale and Randy? I don’t think so. So the fact that this fandom, tiny though it is, persists after 20 years is really down to them. Thank you Gale and Randy!
Gale - I know there’s debate about whether straight actors can/should play gay roles. That’s a discussion for another day. In 1999 or 1998, whenever casting was happening, that wasn’t a debate because there were so few gay roles. I love that Gale was so thoughtful about who Brian is and what motivates him and makes him, him. He really brought humanity to the role, which could have been very two dimensional without such care. And for the explicit scenes? I adore that Gale really brought his whole pussy to that part of Brian as well.
Randy - I know a bit more about him since I’ve listened to his podcast. I love that he embraced Justin and advocated for storylines that reflected what he believed to be authentic for the character as a queer man about the same age as Justin (Randy’s a bit older). We have Randy to thank for the topping scene in S2 - thank you Randy! I love that he has a loving family that is non-traditional and as a throuple they are raising a kid. I love that he has a place in the Catskills, it really shakes up the image of a celebrity type when you hear his stories about that house. I love that he is getting his MA in counseling. I hope to run into him professionally one day and have to play it super cool. (Kidding, I hope to never run into him. I live in fear of running into favorite celebrities out in the wild.) IADORE beyond words that his cat is named Latrice Meow.

Erin, I have a question inspired by your latest Shane/Tim fic! It completely blew me away and I know I’m going to keep thinking about them 🖤
Have you ever watched the show Queen as Folk? It was one of my absolute faves growing up, written by Russel T Davis, with Aidan Gillan and a (very) young Charlie hunnam? It’s set in Manchester in 1999 and although it’s a very different story is gives suchhhh vibes of Bloody Kisses that i think you’d really enjoy it?
You might be the like, Al of course I’ve seen QAF or it might absolutely not be your thing.
Much love,
Al
Tumblr media
omg i love you for this 😭
i’ve seen a couple of episodes for the american version of the show but never a whole season/series! i should probably watch some to get some more of those late 90s/early 00s vibes!
thank you so much for the rec!!

qaf rewatch notes to self, s1
episode... wait where am I again? oh yeah, 1x12, "move it or lose it". wait what is this one about? oh wait-- no, this isn't kip yet. this is brian and mikey.
brian running in a clean loft with mikey's pictures still up; an interesting thought: brian uses exercise to escape feelings of anxiety/depression?
michael's determination he's going to be "too happy with david" really feels a loooooot like justin's protestation he's so happy with ethan, eh oh el
cynthia asking brian about what's going on with michael: she really is a good friend in the small way she can be.
also, brian calling ted and ted being like "what the fuck are you doing calling me?" -- as much as brian is desired by all he really only has like. two friends. poor bastard.
oh jeez, I forgot this is emmett's gay crisis :(
mel calling gus "your son and brian's. I just pay the bills". and mel trying to get lindsay to open up and talk, clearly they're not actually all that well-suited, communication wise. lindsay avoids confrontation like the plague unless she can control it, and mel welcomes it. like, they never actually learned to adapt how to talk to each other
awww. ted trying to be a good friend by asking brian about whether he's talked to michael! and brian being actually genuine (though annoyed) when he says "I told you, he's out of my life and i'm out of his. so would you please shut the fuck up about it?"
it's interesting to see how while Brian almost always deflects emotional conversations with the gang with sarcasm... in the moments when they ask him with genuine concern how he is / what's going on / etc., he does (sometimes) respond with genuineness and openness back. He isn't angry at Ted here and it does feel like Ted understands the "please" is genuine.
also randomly, was Brian drinking something with six marachino cherries stuck in a pineapple?! did he actually order a fruit cocktail? he's playing with.... it's a lemon with marachino cherries, not pineapple. What the actual hell
*guiltily skips Michael and David* I definitely remember thinking when I watched this in 1999, that hal sparks tried his best but was really bad at faking gay chemistry. I mean, sure, the actor that played Dr. Dave probably didn't help butthe two of them are just like. nah
randomly: brian's taken down an alley by a rando right here, a more risky late-night hookup than he'd usually take (also more of a troll than he'd usually fuck). guess there's an alley to cruise by woody's? also: this would be an interesting moment for Something To Happen To Brian if you were doing an AU. (also, is that the same alley / corner where justin blew him in 3x10?)
brian drops by the lesbians' and when he asks "besides, when you think about it what do Mikey and I really have in common?" mel immediately pipes up with, "you're lives?" -- implicitly "you dumbass?" Also, both of them sort of feel sorry for Brian when he says "some things are better left broken". HowEVER, they also look like "can you fucking believe this" about him wanting to play scrabble.
(mel also clearly is looking at lindsay when he says "some things are better left broken", as in "are we at the point where we should give up?" spoilers, mel: yes.)
"how many guys hit on you a night?" "give or take, a hundred and twelve-- I don't know!" as much as brian likes his own company he also doesn't really seem to know how to be alone, here.'
(*skips the anti-gay emmett scene* I can't do it, it's too painful)
aww, sunshine!! first appearance of Justin this whole episode and he's bussing tables like a boss.
this tiny scene with Daphne and Justin is astoundingly good. She's sitting at the liberty diner, hanging out with him while he's on shift because he isn't good at making time for her but she is; she calls him conceited but not in a mean way (true facts, daph, true facts). He's all, "I could fuck practically anyone I wanted," and then when she asks, "So why don't you?", pointing out that he might claim to be All That, he's not taking advantage of it..... and boom, Brian walks in, and all she says is, "nevermind, the answer just walked in the door."
It's pretty clear here that Daphne is getting a little tired of Justin's preening-- and I might infer, also a bit tired of Justin's obsession with Brian? I mean, who could blame her, she's probably the one that's had to listen to it for hours and hours on end. *g* However, she still gives Brian a happy smile because she luvs him too.
So let's talk about how Justin says "what, you actually want to know?" when Brian asks how things are... and then his tentative, casual, "everything's fine". Because Justin doesn't believe brian means it and is just. waiting for him to be mean again. and obviously mid-season 1 Justin isn't really put off by Brian's meanness, he doesn't want to encourage it or give him an opening
And then! Justin's confused face at when Brian says "what are you doing tonight", his little excited, optimistic "really?" and Daphne's tiny little smile!
Then! Then justin realizes the truth, it's about Michael. also Daphne! Daphne is the one that says "you should get them to make up because you love Brian". And Brian's "stay the fuck out of it" at Justin's attempted interference is harsher / angrier than he was at Ted (peut etre because he's more concerned about justin getting involved? peut etre because he knows justin is way less likely to listen to him?)
ice cream kisses! justin is so good to him, cheering him up.
oh my god. "[so you pushed him away, and now he hates you]" "doesn't matter, so long as mikey's happy." and then a season later brian does exactly the same thing to justin. I wonder if Justin ever put the pieces together? brian pushed him toward ethan -- a man he thought would be better for him than he was, even if brian knew the relationship wouldn't last. which is exactly what he did with Michael and David.
okay, in my head I'm going to say yes, yes he did eventually put the pieces together-- note to self for the S4 rewrite, have michael point maybe once he learns about the cancer: that brian pushed justin away to prove his love in a way he's only ever done for michael. because he loves justin that much.
People quote that "I'm onto you" and how Justin stopped being able to read brian in S2 because of trauma. [these are random babble thoughts] and I think that's true, but I think equally true is the fact that the bashing removed justin's ability to believe, without evidence, of brian's love/care. he couldn't believe in it, and brian did nothing to reinforce it. so i'm not sure I'd say he "stopped being onto him", so much as that stopped being important. he saw through brian but it wasn't enough, because he'd changed too fundamentally.
*skips emmett* *skips michael and david*
Mel calling Ted to get brian tf out of their house, hahaha. I mean it's sad, and angsty that Lindsay and brian are talking -- randomly, how great is it that brian doesn't knee-jerk take lindsay's side, he points out that it might actually be lindsay's fault, forcing her to be objective and deal with it.
but mostly, lolol Mel being like "just get him the fuck out of our house!" Because in the ideal AU/canon, Mel might not hate Brian... but no matter what she definitely doesn't like him enough to want him around more than occasionally.
Brian: suggests relationship therapy. mel wants to go to relationship therapy! Lindsay wants to avoid everything. Even if Brian were bi/straight, him and lindsay would be a terrible couple
Randomly: I really love Tracey, I wish she was in more of the show. She's a good person and a much better friend to Michael than most of them.
you know, lindsay's "you expect all of my time and devotion"... there's a lot wrapped up in this, a lot about how her and michael are more poly / less devoted than Brian (and Justin), who's heart is settled on only one person.
Justin doing the right thing-- omfg. "he loves you. he'll never admit it but he does." Justin tells Michael this in 1x12 and a season later Michael repeats this VERY SAME LINE to Justin. "he doesn't believe in love." "you're the exception." and then justin tells him what brian did, to try and get him and david back together. Justin does what DEBBIE SHOULD HAVE. jesus, why is the seventeen year old the most emotionally mature?? (I mean, yeah, it's because he had two relatively loving parents who nurtured and protected him. But.)
"your ward tracked me down. insisted that I take it." "yeah well I'll have to punish him severely". note to self: if you ever do a S1 bdsm AU, maybe use this as the first forays into it?
(god, no wait, self, you are not writing a S1 D/s au.)
and now there's david trying, with michael. I wonder, if the actor for Dr Dave wouldn't have been a shit, would Dave become what Ben did become? meh, whatever, Ben works better because he's less controlling.

To the people in Florida who extended the so-called "parental rights" bill into 12th grade:
You all are stupid. Not only is this whole thing racist, antisemitic, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, etc, at any age, but your young people are going to find/create this stuff even with your attempt at suppression. You may as well support them in accepting themselves and others as they grow up.
The smutiest slash fan-fiction I ever read was written by a teenager. I had no clue while reading it, of course. The author's note mentioned they were writing the story in the library between classes. I wrote in a compliment for the story and asked if they were majoring in Literature because it'd be a good fit for them. They responded, saying they were still in high school.
This was in like 2009. Fan-fiction has only gained popularity. It has become especially popular for LGBTQ+ young people, young people living in repressive/unsupportive households overall, and BIPOC young people.
Parents supposedly worried about "our children being exposed to age-inappropriate material" are pushing them into finding ACTUAL age-inappropriate material to educate themselves! If your kid learns about LGBTQ+ people from a kids' book when they're young, they'll know people like that exist, and it's normal. When they're not given resources like that, if they grow up and experience any feelings on the LGBTQ+ spectrum, they may go exploring on actual areas of the internet that are not appropriate for their age! Even if they can't access adult content websites that will be blocked by parental controls, there's plenty of other stuff out there they shouldn't see. I think we can all agree that many stories on AO3, Wattpad, FanFic, and Tumblr are not something a 10-year-old should read. Think about it. Would you have turned on age filters for stories when you were young, or would you have wanted to search through every story possible to find something you could relate to? Kristin Chirico said that she was writing smut slash fanfics at like 12 years old. Some of you would be surprised by how common teens writing those are. Not to mention some fan art out there.
I know more than one guy my age who was educated on safe sex practices by the US version of Queer as Folk as 11 and 12-year-olds. One of them was even out at that age. Granted, it's awesome that the US QAF actually addressed that, seeing as the original ignored it. Still, if you've seen the show, you'll know it should NOT be viewed by a child. The US QAF was slightly problematic even by 1999 standards (very by today's) but was completely revolutionary at the time. I still love it to this day despite its many, many problems. Side note: adults, if you're going to begin the show now, try to find the DVDs. The digital versions changed the music, and the show is borderline unwatchable with royalty-free music when the original soundtrack was so important and great. (I'll try to hook you up with the DVDs/digital versions with original music if I can. Virtually everyone I know believes the show would be rated NC-17 if it were a film, so I won't help you if you're under 17 or will watch the show with someone who is).
I've also seen so many tweets and Tumblr posts from people who wrote their own self-insert fan-fic(s) when they were young/are young people now, because there were no/few or horribly written people of color in the original work. They loved the source material, but it sucked to see themselves not at all or poorly represented, so they fixed those failings in their version(s).
Many places in the US are blocking (or trying to block) history classes from teaching, or banning/editing books that might make young people "feel bad about their racial heritage" (which is code for: don't teach white young people their ancestors enslaved BIPOCs throughout history. Don't tell white young people about the horrific abuse BIPOCs, Jewish, and other marginalized people suffered at the hands of white people then, and how it continues to affect our systems to this day. Don't teach it in case it makes white young people feel a little bad. It doesn't matter that marginalized young people live with this knowledge every day). Whitewashing this history, even more than we already do, will only make your children stupid bigots. That's fine with the people supporting these laws, of course, because they're bigots anyway. Their entire purpose in supporting these laws is to segregate their children from their BIPOC, marginalized, and non-Christian peers. Any knowledge of what marginalized people have gone through in our history, and what they continue to endure because of the unjust systems rich, white, cishet men used as the foundation of this country, may educate their young white people that things need to change to make things actually equitable in the US. That might encourage the young people to enact change that would entail some white, cishet, Christian people to be uncomfortable, and one can't have that! *sarcastic gasp*
In summary, these laws stupid (to put it mildly), and they're doing your children a disservice in every way. Not only that, the laws won't work, and some will actually drive your children into TRULY age-inappropriate content.
I ask these parents: is it worse for your 1st grader to learn about gay penguins who save an abandoned egg and raise it together, or for them to learn about gay people from inauthentic and unsafe explicit gay sex scenes in fan-fics when they're 10? Should your kid learn what being trans/nonbinary is from an educated teacher when they're about to go through puberty and possibly begin to experience gender dysphoria if they're trans, or would you rather them think there's something wrong with them for being trans, they can't talk to anyone, and should unalive themselves because of it? Should you teach your children about the injustices their ancestors perpetrated on the ancestors of some of their peers who just happen to look and/or have been raised differently from them, and how that changes their peers' experience in life, or is it better for your children to lack empathy and be totally unprepared if they seek higher education because actual history was withheld from them?
You all who support these laws are doing young people no favors. Don't let your bigotry that motivates these laws hurt your children. That's the only thing these restrictions are going to accomplish.

Another Gay Movie (2006)
Tumblr media
Director: Todd Stephens
Stars: Michael Carbonaro, Jonah Blechman, Jonathan Chase...
Another Gay Movie is a 2006 American romantic comedy film directed by Todd Stephens. It follows four gay friends, Andy, Jarod, Nico and Griff, who vow upon graduating high school that they will all lose their "anal virginity" before their friend's Labor Day party. The film takes content from the 1999 teen comedy American Pie.
To be honest, I never actually jumped on the hype train for American Pie and similar teen comedies... probably because it was aimed mostly for heterosexual audience, so it wasn't something that spoke to me or something that I could feel familiar with. It didn't feel realistic enough, the jokes were all similar to each other and pretty stereotypical and so on... But with this movie, which feels basically like a gay spin-off of American Pie, it all fell into place for me. I can now understand better why the original movie has such a strong fan base. It's not the sexual jokes that actually matter the most, it's the feeling of youth, vibrancy and life that was so well captured in these teen movies that make it so likeable.
At certain moments I really enjoyed this movie. It was funny, entertaining and cute. Very vibrant and lively atmosphere all throughout it. The actors were good looking, too. The downside for me was that there were many moments where they took the jokes too far for my taste and I think the character of Muffler was too pushy/loud. Had they toned it out a bit, I think it would have been so much better. I've also noticed that, apart from American Pie references, it also has one reference to Queer as Folk, where the movie tries to top QaF in portrayal of sex scenes which QaF was famous for. It's worth noting that this movie was a very bold project for its time, having been released in 2006 and featuring lots of male-on-male nudity.
Apparently, there's a sequel. I think I'll watch it! Never mind the cringey parts, more often than not this was really enjoyable and fun to me. It might seem trashy, but what I liked about it is that it never tries to hide or deny that, and instead just tries its best to be a hot mess and make the viewer have a fun time.
